01:12 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
01:38 AM Deejay: moin
04:26 AM Tom_L: morning
04:38 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:57 AM Tom_L: 106-108F here today
06:17 AM JT-Cave: damn
06:18 AM JT-Cave: 60°F to 88°F here today but the heat comes tomorrow
06:19 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed... time to let the chickens out
06:25 AM * JT-Cave goes to get a 7i78
06:31 AM JT-Cave: wow just sold a 50 pin card
06:54 AM JT-Cave: time for a bike ride
06:55 AM JT-Cave: sort out the 7i92t 7i78 later
07:29 AM skunkworks: I have 2 machines running the 50 pin cards..
07:29 AM skunkworks: One has been running for 10 years or more
07:32 AM skunkworks: it 'just works' tm.. (well - currently has a blown hydraulic hose)
08:28 AM Tom_L: encoder code works
08:28 AM Tom_L: saves and restores value
08:38 AM Tom_L: PR #17 up
08:48 AM zyp: https://bin.jvnv.net/file/X3IYe.png what's going on with the step in rotor-angle?
08:48 AM zyp: https://paste.jvnv.net/view/rLBbL
08:51 AM Tom_L: wiring all good?
08:52 AM zyp: it's not a wiring issue, the rawcounts input to the bldc block looks sane
09:12 AM Tom_L: zyp, don't have a 'real' scope to see the signal?
09:12 AM Tom_L: just to eliminate things
09:13 AM Tom_L: never heard of issues with halscope but there could be
09:15 AM zyp: there's no signal to see, rawcounts is coming from a digital fanuc encoder decoded by a custom fpga block and sent over ethernet
09:18 AM zyp: I've got an old fanuc robot arm from 1995 or so, and I've made a custom drop in replacement for the main control board: https://bin.jvnv.net/file/WpVlV.jpg
09:22 AM zyp: I'm not really intending to use the bldc block long term, but it's a quick way to test until I've got a full motor control loop on the fpga itself
09:23 AM zyp: it's just that it doesn't handle wraparound correctly, so the step in rotor-angle turns into a transient in the phase-angle and results in noise when it's running: https://bin.jvnv.net/file/EXWSY.mp4
09:34 AM Tom_L: that's kinda cool. what are you gonna do with the arm?
09:35 AM zyp: first of all I'm gonna get it running :)
09:35 AM zyp: and then I'm probably gonna try putting a plasma cutter on it
09:37 AM zyp: the control hardware I'm building is ethernet based and chainable like ethercat, so the idea is to make it easy to swap tools
09:38 AM zyp: just give each tool its own controller so all I have to do is mount it on the arm and plug it in
09:46 AM JT-Cave: my chnc is running with a 5i20 and 7i33 and 7i37 daughter cards IIRC
09:48 AM Tom_L: made it up the hill and back ehh?
09:50 AM Tom_L: mine are 50 pin cards. i think a couple io are bad but it still works good
09:50 AM JT-Cave: went to wolf creek to ride 6 miles after jury rigging the bike carrier
09:50 AM Tom_L: haven't had mine out in ages. so long the tires are dry rotted
09:50 AM JT-Cave: after leaving the bolt, wrench and lock on my bumper yesterday
09:51 AM Tom_L: woops
09:51 AM JT-Cave: the lock never fell off but the rest dit
09:51 AM * JT-Cave goes to clean chicken shit
10:02 AM zyp: so, I think I found the cause of my issue: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/commit/1e2ac52bcfe71898fbd4449f370a7f015d7c1c8f
10:03 AM zyp: the bldc block expects rawcounts to use the full s32 range and thus only handles s32 overflow correctly, and my encoder is an absolute 10-bit value
10:04 AM zyp: so lagcomped_counts ends up being something like 0 + ((0 - 1020) / 2) for one cycle
10:13 AM roycroft: hurricane hilary's forecast storm track shows that it may push some rain up here
10:13 AM roycroft: that would end our summer drought rather early
10:14 AM roycroft: it would be tuesday by the time it got here
10:15 AM roycroft: and we don't have rain in the forecast yet
11:18 AM roycroft: it's mostly gone from here, but the forecast for vancouver bc is for smoke arriving soon from the fires in the okanagan
11:18 AM roycroft: that means noreasterly winds, which will bring that smoke down here eventually
11:19 AM roycroft: although the forecast shows norwesterly winds today, turning to northern winds, and then westerly later next week, so maybe we'll be spared that smoke
11:21 AM JT-Shop: nap time
11:30 AM Unterhaus_: so far I have successfully avoided mowing the lawn today
11:41 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
11:41 AM Unterhausen: I got a piece of wood that's the perfect size for one of my projects yesterday at habitat. I'm hoping it's maple, otherwise I just bought a rough 2x4 for too much money
11:41 AM Unterhausen: even though it was half off
11:43 AM CloudEvil: So 2x2 then?
01:36 PM _unreal_: just got an old radioshack sound dB sensor device for $2
01:36 PM _unreal_: I dont have any real uses for it, but I'm sure it will be nice to have on hand at some point
01:46 PM _unreal_: also just discovered my dashcam mount has a designed failure. easy to fix but WTF just the same
01:47 PM _unreal_: so whats new
01:50 PM Tom_L: 108°F currently
01:51 PM JT-Shop: 83°F
01:52 PM pcw-home: 68
01:55 PM Tom_L: i'll take some of that pacific breese
01:55 PM JT-Shop: wow pcw-home is back
01:56 PM travis_farmer: 71F
02:00 PM pcw-home: Yeah, even when its hot here we usually get a sea breeze in the evening
02:01 PM JT-Shop: hmm my 1VM Splitter is in Olive Branch MS... they could have just dropped it off as they went by
02:05 PM roycroft: you should have had ups deliver it
02:06 PM roycroft: they would be happy to just toss it off the truck as they drove by
02:07 PM JT-Cave: ups is pretty good here, this is coming fedex
02:08 PM roycroft: oh
02:08 PM roycroft: fedex don't toss it off the truck as they drive by
02:08 PM roycroft: they toss it in a ravine
02:09 PM JT-Cave: maybe in oregon they do
02:09 PM XXCoder: roy or into recycling bin thats set out to be picked up
02:10 PM XXCoder: I read someone who had that happen, proof of delivery was picture of inside recycle bin
02:10 PM XXCoder: when he come in, it was empty
02:12 PM pcw-home: JT-Shop at long long last we have 7I95Ts
02:13 PM JT-Shop: awesome
02:14 PM JT-Shop: hows the 7i73 coming along
02:15 PM pcw-home: Being built, but our assy has had problems (lost a key employee)
02:15 PM pcw-home: seems to be recovering though
02:15 PM roycroft: hilary is weakening as it approaches baja, as expected, but it's moving much faster
02:15 PM roycroft: still tracking to head up into nevada and then peter out
02:16 PM pcw-home: wish we could get some of that rainfall...
02:16 PM pcw-home: we probably wont have a drop till November
02:17 PM CloudEvil: Flash flood area has if anything gone up a bit
02:17 PM CloudEvil: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_ep4+shtml/174308.shtml?ero#contents
02:17 PM XXCoder: https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-109.59,23.44,2417
02:22 PM roycroft: i hope we get some soon
02:22 PM roycroft: but i don't expect it, unless hilary veers to the west a bit
02:26 PM roycroft: it's shifted east, though
02:26 PM roycroft: eugene was in the "slight" risk zone yesterday
02:26 PM roycroft: today we're in the clear
02:27 PM XXCoder: I wonder if west ones will become common
02:27 PM roycroft: but the "high" zone in southern/southeastern california has increased, for sure
02:28 PM roycroft: there are always eastern pacific hurricanes
02:28 PM roycroft: but they've never come up this far north before
02:28 PM roycroft: i suspect we'll see more of them
02:45 PM Tom_L: 109°F
03:07 PM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWyuYmZsDfE watch with CC on
03:09 PM XXCoder: ok thanks roy
03:10 PM * roycroft is heading off to the teddy bears picnic shortly
03:11 PM roycroft: it's the annual picnic at the fair site for staff/crew/volunteers
03:11 PM roycroft: and my favorite eugene band of all time - the sugar beets - will be playing at main stage
03:11 PM roycroft: they haven't performed publicly in several years, so it should be really nice seeing them
03:40 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, nice
03:41 PM JT-Shop: trying to figure out how to screen capture the install process but all the different popup windows is making it hard
03:54 PM Tom_L: video screen capture then pull from that? dunno
03:54 PM JT-Shop: yup I think I'll have to capture the whole screen
03:59 PM JT-Shop: I would really like the first video on how to install it or use it from the command line "I think"
04:12 PM Tom_L: i think if they're looking for the tool they would know how to install a deb
04:12 PM Tom_L: or just put that on the website
06:57 PM solarwind: Any safety risk of mist spraying water at a bench grinder wheel?
06:58 PM solarwind: That is, a constant spray of water to keep the workpiece cool while I grind it
06:59 PM solarwind: Big M35 lathe tools take forever to grind and get hot to hold and dunking in water is annoying
07:05 PM robotustra: George Carlin about safety risks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIATrtvtZHk
07:06 PM XXCoder: lol
07:07 PM robotustra: unfortunately there is no lecture about safety risk of mist spraying
