01:26 AM Deejay: moin
02:46 AM travis_farmer: Morning :-)
04:38 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:35 AM travis_farmer: 59F/79F @ 87%rh
05:44 AM JT-Cave: 76°F
06:20 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:56 AM travis_farmer: well that was fast... a new (to me) replacement server i got (on credit :-( unfortunately) was shipped on the 10th, from Georgia, and is out for delivery today!
06:58 AM CloudEvil: yay
07:03 AM travis_farmer: Hmmm, sorta came across like thinly veiled contempt...
07:05 AM CloudEvil: I am not awake enough for complex emotions.

09:26 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/mesact2/mesact2_error1.png
09:26 AM Tom_L: after today's pull
09:27 AM Tom_L: opening a 2.0.1 config
11:05 AM roycroft: for the first time ever, eweb, our public water and electric utility, have issued a notice that they will be pro-actively cutting power to areas at high risk for wildfires
11:06 AM roycroft: this came right before another large fire broke out just to the southeast of here
11:42 AM travis_farmer: well that was odd... went to McDonald's for lunch... ordered 2 bacon double cheeseburgers, 10-piece nuggets, and a Big Mac. got home, and had 2 bacon double cheeseburgers, and 2 10-piece nuggets. went back, and they gave us a whole order, plus the food we had already... so we ended up with a 30-piece chicken nuggets, with only 2 sauces, a big mac, and 4 bacon double cheeseburgers... if we had some homeless people around here, we could have fed
11:42 AM travis_farmer: them the extras, but instead it had to go in the fridge...
01:43 PM roycroft: mouser just blocked me from their website because i have an ad blocker
01:43 PM * roycroft is not impressed
01:43 PM travis_farmer: how rude
01:43 PM XXCoder: weird. I dont remember mouser ever using ads
01:45 PM roycroft: they don't
01:45 PM roycroft: but i think their search tool looks like ads
01:46 PM XXCoder: interesting. I tested mouser with ublock orgin seems ok
01:49 PM Tom_L: you can add an allowance for them
01:57 PM roycroft: i found what i'm looking for at digi-key
01:57 PM roycroft: that was easier
02:17 PM roycroft: i'm not sure if i should be building a hauling/recovery vehicle at all - i live in a different universe than the folks who do that kind of stuff
02:18 PM roycroft: for example, while looking for upfitter switches for the ancillary lights i'll be installing, when i see switches for rear lights the symbol on the switch is almost universally a middle finger
02:19 PM roycroft: and i find "zombie light" switches and "sasquatch light" switches and similar stuff
02:20 PM * roycroft is just looking for switches with labels saying what they do
02:21 PM roycroft: i do have a laser engraver, and wonder if it would be hard to make my own
02:22 PM XXCoder: crude gonna crude
02:23 PM travis_farmer: maybe thin clear plastic, paint the back with black paint, and laser engrave the paint off where needed
02:24 PM roycroft: that's how they're made, travis_farmer
02:25 PM roycroft: actually white platic actuators with a black matte coating
02:25 PM roycroft: if i burn off the coating with the laser it should work ok
02:25 PM travis_farmer: maybe, just a thought ;-)
02:25 PM roycroft: i'm looking at carling switch bodies and actuators, because they're pretty universal in off-road and marine environments
02:26 PM roycroft: most of the brands that are not carling are carling-compatible
02:26 PM roycroft: https://www.carlingtech.com/sites/default/files/documents/V-Series_Details_%26_COS_111213.pdf
02:26 PM travis_farmer: what about old toggles, with the aircraft covers?
02:26 PM roycroft: i can get actuators that are blank
02:26 PM roycroft: i want them illuminated
02:26 PM travis_farmer: ahh, ok
02:26 PM roycroft: so that i can see at night what switch i'm about to engage
02:27 PM roycroft: if i hit the rear spotlight switch accidently when i intend to hit a front switch, and someone is behind me, then that middle finger switch cover would be apt
02:27 PM travis_farmer: lol
02:27 PM roycroft: my intent is to never give another motorist the middle finger
02:28 PM Tom_L: aww where's the fun in that?
02:28 PM travis_farmer: lol
02:28 PM * roycroft does not own a maga hat
02:28 PM roycroft: like i said, i live in a different universe
02:29 PM Tom_L: it's like saying 'goodmorning' on the road...
02:29 PM roycroft: the switch bodies i'm looking at have a dependent and an independent led
02:29 PM roycroft: i will tie the independent ones into the instrument panel lights, so they will be on whenever the headlights are on and will be dimmable
02:30 PM roycroft: the independent ones will turn on when the switch is engaged
02:30 PM roycroft: so i want appropriate symbols/text in front of the independent lamps
02:38 PM travis_farmer: funkenjaeger, over on Discord is having trouble compiling LinuxCNC from source for RIP. anybody availible to pop over and help him?
02:39 PM roycroft: my main concern about laser etching the actuators is that they are curved, and i'm not sure how much focus i would lose etching on the curves
02:39 PM roycroft: a 3d laser would be most approprate for that
02:56 PM Tom_L: travis_farmer, there are readme's in the source
02:56 PM Tom_L: read them
02:58 PM Tom_L: what os?
02:58 PM travis_farmer: not me that needs it. he is getting compile errors https://paste.centos.org/view/8814cc15
03:00 PM travis_farmer: ...waiting on responce from asking him what OS
03:01 PM * Tom_L goes for a nap
03:56 PM XXCoder: interesting artian makes video
03:57 PM XXCoder: never heard "tip" on just using a bolt, grind grooves into it, then just use it as tap lol. no wonder as I only wtach mostly decent machinist videos
03:57 PM XXCoder: but it seems interesting for use for wood only
03:59 PM travis_farmer: sounds more like a thread chaser
04:00 PM XXCoder: nah its crap tip really. guy shows problems with it
04:00 PM XXCoder: hes making actual tap
04:01 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/6qXinc7Ob5I if curious
04:02 PM roycroft: i've seen folks use a bolt as a tap for soft materials beore
04:02 PM roycroft: before
04:03 PM roycroft: i've personally never done it though
04:03 PM roycroft: but i have a fairly complete set of taps and dies, so i don't need to
04:06 PM XXCoder: nice. seems hes making one because order out would take 2 weeks, and $50 because its special tap size or something
04:06 PM XXCoder: 20mm and thread is 1mm
04:14 PM Tom_L: i've done the bolt one before
04:17 PM Tom_L: one thing i've never done for lack of need to though is measure threads with the wire gages. i've always had other means to do so
04:22 PM Tom_L: i'm sure he spent more than the $50 making the tap though
04:22 PM XXCoder: time wise certainly
04:25 PM Tom_L: different process but these are one of a kind threads as well: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Brass_cup/Brass_Cups5.jpg
04:25 PM XXCoder: interesting
04:26 PM Tom_L: just to see if i could
04:26 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Brass_cup/Brass_bar2.jpg
04:27 PM XXCoder: it can be small pillbox
04:27 PM Tom_L: started out like that
04:27 PM XXCoder: fir emergacy
04:27 PM Tom_L: yeah or to hide something
04:27 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Brass_cup/Brass_Cups8.jpg
04:30 PM XXCoder: nice
04:30 PM XXCoder: cant see any seam
04:31 PM Tom_L: also a custom thread: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/extinguisher_nut/Pressure_test_cap3.jpg
04:32 PM Tom_L: but i had my bud make me a test plug for it since he has all the measuring equipment to do so
04:32 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/extinguisher_nut/Test_plug2.jpg
04:32 PM Tom_L: i'm sure you've seen thsoe
04:34 PM XXCoder: some of it yeah
04:34 PM XXCoder: its nice reminder still
04:35 PM Tom_L: i would have just single pointed that guy's thread
04:35 PM roycroft: that would be the most straightforward thing to do
04:36 PM roycroft: but the youtube video might not get as many clicks as the tap making one
04:36 PM Tom_L: he never did really show the need for it
04:36 PM Tom_L: looked like a scrap piece of alum to me
04:36 PM Tom_L: no sound so dunno what he said about it
04:36 PM XXCoder: project may be contract so cant show actual part
04:36 PM roycroft: the part being made is irrelevant when one's primary purpose is clicks
04:38 PM Tom_L: yep, mine only got like 200 views :)
04:38 PM Tom_L: i could care less about that
04:40 PM roycroft: my overall point is that the purpose of making the video might have been to demonstrate the technique, not to thread the part
04:41 PM * roycroft needs to go back out into the heat for a while :(
04:41 PM XXCoder: my videos is random because its to show someone something
04:43 PM skunkworks: XXCoder: this one is better... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo7SwanH50I
04:43 PM XXCoder: I remember that one
04:43 PM XXCoder: been a while lol
04:44 PM Tom_L: and _he_ had a purpose for it
04:57 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:57 PM JT-Shop: nice day after a crappy rainy morning
04:58 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, did you see my earlier message?
04:58 PM JT-Shop: don't think so
04:58 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/mesact2/mesact2_error1.png
04:58 PM Tom_L: opening a 2.0.1 config
04:59 PM Tom_L: after the latest pull this morning
05:00 PM JT-Shop: ok, thanks
05:00 PM Tom_L: had plans to build but didn't
05:01 PM XXCoder: fun blonihack today
05:02 PM JT-Shop: hmm wonder how that cut/paste got there???
05:02 PM Tom_L: huh?
05:02 PM JT-Shop: weird for sure... must have been in a hurry and pasted in the wrong file
05:02 PM Tom_L: ...wasn't me :)
05:03 PM JT-Shop: line 195 in openini.py lol that's code for building the ini file
05:04 PM XXCoder: code paste means check it twice ;)
05:04 PM * Tom_L boots the linux box
05:05 PM Tom_L: oh, those 5 lines shouldn't be there?
05:08 PM JT-Shop: I can't even find when I put that in there
05:08 PM Tom_L: i noticed a minor message type in there somewhere too
05:09 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:09 PM Tom_L: line 55 has that
05:09 PM JT-Shop: iniContents.append is only used in updateini.py and buildini.py
05:10 PM JT-Shop: hmm peter is still mia
05:10 PM JT-Shop: line 55 in which file?
05:10 PM Tom_dev: openini.py
05:10 PM Tom_dev: he ini file was is not created....
05:10 PM JT-Shop: The ini file was is not created ?
05:11 PM Tom_dev: take out the 'is'
05:11 PM JT-Shop: was it or is it lol
05:11 PM Tom_dev: i think
05:11 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:14 PM * JT-Shop goes to check the mail
05:23 PM roycroft: oh geeze
05:24 PM roycroft: the forecast high for tomorrow was 34; it's just been revised to 40
05:24 PM roycroft: and for monday it was 40 and is now 43
05:25 PM roycroft: 44 is the highest temperature ever recorded here, and that was just a couple years ago
05:26 PM roycroft: meanwhile there was an intense hail storm in minnesota yesterday
05:27 PM XXCoder: ugh dunno wjy joe always exports video in bad settings
05:27 PM XXCoder: too low fps and bandwidth
05:28 PM JT-Shop: we had to drive through some heavy rain this morning
05:28 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, I still can't find when that code was added to openini.py, it's only executed if you have mdi commands but I'll fix that in a bit
05:28 PM roycroft: probably some of the same stuff that caused the hail up north of you
05:29 PM roycroft: i have a *lot* to do tomorrow, much of it outdoors
05:29 PM roycroft: but also a lot of pulling camping gear down from the attic
05:29 PM roycroft: and i have a meeting that will last much of the morning, so i won't be able to go into the attic until almost noon
05:30 PM roycroft: but it will be worth it so i can get in my car and drive to the coast before the temperature hits 43
05:31 PM roycroft: my air-conditioned car, i should say
05:34 PM JT-Shop: pull it down tonight when it's cooler...
05:36 PM roycroft: i may
05:37 PM roycroft: although it takes until the wee hours of the morning for my house to start cooling off this time of year
05:37 PM roycroft: the attic may be the same
05:37 PM roycroft: i may just get up really early tomorrow and do it before my meeting
05:38 PM roycroft: that makes more sense, but i'm on vacation, and getting up early on a sunday morning doesn't sound very vacationy to me
05:38 PM XXCoder: drive during cold night
05:39 PM roycroft: the drive doesn't bother me
05:39 PM roycroft: i'll only be on the road for a bit over an hour before the temperature goes down
05:39 PM roycroft: and my car has ac
05:39 PM roycroft: the drive will be very comfortable
05:40 PM roycroft: it's the getting ready and packing part that will be difficult
05:40 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, odd for sure. lemme know and i'll pull & test again
05:41 PM Tom_L: having some once a year cake atm
05:45 PM JT-Cave: ok I fixed the weird copy and paste code and the typo
05:46 PM JT-Cave: see if it builds(new file) all mdi commands and updates and opens them if you get time
05:47 PM JT-Cave: nice temps on the way
05:48 PM JT-Cave: Tuesday high 77°F... looks like a lumberjacking day
05:49 PM JT-Cave: makes me wonder if that code is in the old mesact
05:49 PM Tom_L: i'll take a look
05:50 PM JT-Cave: ok
05:55 PM Tom_L: looks better
05:55 PM JT-Cave: thanks
05:56 PM Tom_L: that stuff on line 16ish of main.hal is gone now too
05:56 PM Tom_L: forgot what it was but something with pwmgen
05:57 PM JT-Cave: yup some stuff when I was working on the 7i96s that later was used later on
05:57 PM Tom_L: you might add a line above the spindle stuff in the hal file
05:57 PM Tom_L: like the other sections
05:57 PM Tom_L: all runs together there
05:57 PM JT-Cave: hmm it's not there?
05:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:58 PM Tom_dev: net joint.3.output => hm2_[MESA](BOARD).0.stepgen.03.velocity-cmd
05:58 PM Tom_dev: # Spindle PID Setup
05:58 PM Tom_dev: setp pid.s.Pgain [SPINDLE_0](P)
05:58 PM Tom_dev: setp pid.s.error-previous-target true
05:58 PM Tom_dev: # Spindle PWM Setup
05:58 PM Tom_dev: setp hm2_[MESA](BOARD).0.pwmgen.03.output-type [SPINDLE_0](PWM_TYPE)
05:58 PM Tom_L: 2 places
05:59 PM Tom_L: just for readability
05:59 PM JT-Cave: ah it's missing a \n
06:02 PM Tom_L: mdi_command is nice
06:03 PM Tom_L: that should be enough.. especially for a noob building one
06:03 PM JT-Cave: is it fully functioning now?
06:03 PM Tom_L: it saved and reloaded it
06:03 PM JT-Cave: cool
06:04 PM Tom_L: don't worry, i'll find something for you to do tomorrow :)
06:04 PM JT-Cave: ok thanks
06:04 PM Tom_L: ok it didn't save the min max rpm on the spindle
06:04 PM JT-Cave: ok
06:04 PM Tom_L: or it didn't read it
06:05 PM Tom_L: lemme see
06:05 PM JT-Cave: I need to work on that more
06:05 PM Tom_L: where's that stored?
06:05 PM JT-Cave: it would go in the spindle section of the ini
06:06 PM Tom_L: yeah i don't see an entry for those in the ini
06:06 PM Tom_L: no MIN_ MAX_
06:06 PM Tom_L: i see MAX_OUTPUT
06:06 PM JT-Cave: I left the hatch open today and a lot of people came by to look at the C8
06:06 PM Tom_L: cool
06:06 PM JT-Cave: ok I need to finish that
06:07 PM Tom_L: sounds like you had a fun day
06:07 PM JT-Cave: I let one young boy sit in it he was grinning from ear to ear
06:07 PM Tom_L: i bet
06:07 PM JT-Cave: pretty cool day, we've never been to that festival before
06:08 PM Tom_L: was that the local vette club you found recently?
06:09 PM Tom_L: Max_Acceleration is also greyed out
06:09 PM JT-Cave: yeah we convoyed up to St Gen where the festival was and got to park on a tree covered hill overlooking the start of the vendors
06:09 PM JT-Cave: on the tool?
06:10 PM Tom_L: yeah, spindle section
06:10 PM Tom_L: i know you're not done...
06:10 PM JT-Cave: ah yep that only applies to some boards
06:10 PM Tom_L: my vfd takes care of that on mine
06:10 PM JT-Cave: 7i76 and 7i77 have that option IIRC
06:11 PM Tom_L: ok
06:11 PM JT-Cave: and if you use a stepgen that's a valid option
06:11 PM Tom_L: add a x.xx precision to the pid section
06:12 PM JT-Cave: I didn't get that far this morning
06:12 PM Tom_L: k
06:14 PM Tom_L: i wonder what percentage of ppl using spindle use a near component for at speed
06:14 PM Tom_L: and if it would be worth it to add that there
06:14 PM JT-Cave: if you have encoder feedback yes
06:14 PM Tom_L: right now it's just set to true
06:14 PM JT-Cave: on my to do list :)
06:14 PM Tom_L: ok
06:16 PM Tom_L: she just read me: 'we made a vow in our marriage to never go to bed angry... we've been up since last sunday'
06:16 PM JT-Cave: lol
06:16 PM Tom_L: made me chuckle
06:17 PM JT-Cave: I told my wife to be I don't argue she said me neither and we never have in 34 years or so
06:18 PM Tom_L: seems harder to find that nowdays
06:19 PM JT-Cave: any way time to relax on the couch with a fat cat in my lap... see you in the morning
06:19 PM Tom_L: later.
07:09 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: doesnt single point need cnc to be used?
07:10 PM XXCoder: dont think artian makes has any cnc
07:25 PM Tom_L: yes
07:25 PM Tom_L: you can single point on a lathe without cnc
07:27 PM XXCoder: I guess depends on how large part is but ok
07:27 PM skunkworks: I am absolutly out of computer power cords here..
07:27 PM skunkworks: how does that happen
07:27 PM Tom_L: are you eating them?
07:28 PM Tom_L: i have a pile but not sure where
07:28 PM XXCoder: pc cord noodles
07:28 PM skunkworks: I have a rather large box of them at work..
07:28 PM skunkworks: but - that is at work
07:28 PM Tom_L: i remember all the keyboards with coiled cords..
07:28 PM Tom_L: what a mess to untangle
07:31 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, what chip are you using to get 10v from the parport?
07:31 PM Tom_L: no sound here
07:31 PM skunkworks: uh - it is a random dual opamp - let me look
07:32 PM Tom_L: the parport has 5v out? not 12.. right?
07:33 PM skunkworks: correct - I am using a +/-12v supply. THe printer port is just outputing pwm+dir
07:33 PM Tom_L: i had some charge pump chip i was using to get 12? i think for my avr programmers
07:33 PM skunkworks: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/beginners/pwm-dir-to-10v-signal/
07:34 PM skunkworks: the second post has the circuit I stole.. Just switching the high pass to low pass..
07:34 PM skunkworks: (I think that was a mistake on the posters part)
07:34 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/USBTiny_Mkii/12v_TPI_Prog_top.jpg
07:34 PM Tom_L: yeah 12v
07:35 PM Tom_L: low current but it works
07:35 PM skunkworks: Right - this is pretty low current supply - I bought from digikey
07:35 PM Tom_L: i think they were used for eeprom programming or something similar
07:36 PM Tom_L: i forget now
07:36 PM skunkworks: Peter gave me some circuit boards for doing this - but I Haven't gotten all the parts yet.. I am sure his works better :)
07:36 PM skunkworks: all surface mount
07:37 PM skunkworks: this is a tl082 op amp
07:37 PM Tom_L: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX662ACSA/948142
07:37 PM skunkworks: had to use my phone to read it...
07:38 PM Tom_L: 30ma
07:39 PM skunkworks: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cui-inc/PQDE6W-Q48-D12-T/8568993?s=N4IgTCBcDaIA4EcAmBTAbAdwLQICwA4skBGMLAFxAF0BfIA
07:39 PM Tom_L: that's nice
07:40 PM skunkworks: I didn't want to try to come up with one..
07:40 PM skunkworks: I was using 2 wall warts for inital testing..
07:40 PM skunkworks: lol
08:11 PM roycroft: i found out that the place where i used to get biodiesel now sell r99, and i needed to go to that part of town anyway, so i stopped by and topped off my pickup
08:12 PM roycroft: r99 is $4.19, while the cheapest b20 or straight diesel is $4.79
08:12 PM roycroft: and soon i'll be running almost pure biofuel again
08:12 PM roycroft: so yay
08:13 PM skunkworks: does the exhaust smell like french fries?
08:13 PM skunkworks: ;)
08:14 PM roycroft: not so far
08:14 PM roycroft: and i've never run r99 before so i'm not sure it will
08:14 PM roycroft: b99 smells slightly of french fries
08:14 PM roycroft: which, while not a particularly pleasant odor, is much better than petrodiesel
08:14 PM * roycroft hates the smell of diesel
08:14 PM XXCoder: whats r99 made from?
08:15 PM roycroft: the same as biodiesel - veggie oil (new and used) and animal fat
08:15 PM skunkworks: Guy at works hates it too.. I guess it doesn't really bother me
08:15 PM XXCoder: ok
08:15 PM roycroft: it's just refined differently
08:15 PM XXCoder: I guess for better use as diesel fuel
08:17 PM roycroft: biodiesel is made by reacting it with methanol as a catalyst
08:17 PM roycroft: that creates long ester chains
08:17 PM roycroft: and water, which is not great
08:17 PM roycroft: renewable diesel is made by reacting with hydrogen
08:18 PM roycroft: r99 has a cetane rating of 70, which is really high
08:18 PM roycroft: it also doesn't gel when it gets cold
08:18 PM roycroft: it's actually better than #1 petrodiesel in that respect
08:19 PM roycroft: and, like biodiesel, it has significantly higher lubricity than petrodiesel, which is good for engines
08:19 PM XXCoder: not bad really
08:20 PM roycroft: it has essentially the same energy density as petrodiesel, so my fuel economy will not change due to that, unlike biodiesel, which has lower energy density
08:20 PM roycroft: but the increased lubricity will cause it to burn easier and cleaner, so i expect i'll actually get even better fuel economy than with petrodiesel
08:20 PM roycroft: that's the case with biodiesel - in spite of its lower energy density i got better fuel economy with it vs. petrodiesel
08:21 PM roycroft: this was back when i had my rabbit, and later, my new beetle
08:21 PM roycroft: i've been burning b20 since i got my pickup
08:22 PM roycroft: the cloud point (where the first solid crystals form) of biodiesel is 20c
08:23 PM roycroft: with petrodiesel it's -5c, and with renewable diesel it's -10c
08:25 PM XXCoder: interesting indeed. so its all around improvement
08:26 PM roycroft: yeah, it's pretty good stuff
08:26 PM roycroft: but most importantly it has a much much lower carbon footprint than petrodiesel
08:26 PM roycroft: it's almost carbon neutral
08:27 PM XXCoder: not bad. as long as processes is mostly closed loop
08:36 PM roycroft: i'll see how it works out - this is the first time i've used it and topping off was only about 1/3 of a tank, so i'm effectively running r33 at the moment
08:36 PM roycroft: but the rest of the fuel is b20, so it's more like b12/r33/p53
08:36 PM XXCoder: yeah. changing I would try to go to near empty first but your timing wasnt there for that so well
08:36 PM roycroft: er, p55
08:36 PM roycroft: it needs to add up to 100% :)
08:37 PM roycroft: actually, when trying a new fuel it's best to blend like this at first
08:37 PM roycroft: in case anything goes wonky
08:37 PM roycroft: not that that's likely with a diesel engine
08:37 PM XXCoder: hmm is it for diesel or any fuel car in general?
08:37 PM roycroft: adolf diesel ran straight peanut oil in his first engine
08:37 PM roycroft: i would blend at first with a gasoline engine as well
08:38 PM roycroft: but it's not as big an issue there, i think, because ethanol is the only thing that the fuel is blended with
08:38 PM roycroft: and if your vehicle is not rated for e85 you really should not use anything more than e10
08:39 PM roycroft: if it's rated e85 you probably don't need to bother blending at first - you can just go with e85
08:39 PM XXCoder: cars is fairly rarely sensive to gas, I still remember that time I told my sister not to refuel at acro because my car dont like it
08:39 PM roycroft: but it doesn't hurt if you don't want to run your tank empty first
08:39 PM XXCoder: gas went down really fast so I called my sister out. yup it was at acro
08:40 PM roycroft: yeah, unless there's water in the gas the brand you use doesn't make much of a difference
08:40 PM roycroft: it's just how much ethanol is in it, and it's either e10 or e85
08:40 PM XXCoder: it was upper midrange for 1980s. quite fancy for its era lol
08:40 PM XXCoder: that car got totaled n 2013
08:40 PM roycroft: but with diesel, there are three types of diesel fuel now, and several ways of making both biodiesel and renewable diesel
08:40 PM roycroft: so there is more variation in the fuel
08:41 PM roycroft: plus, petrodiesel is available in #1 (winter) and #2 (summer)
08:41 PM roycroft: #1 having a lower gel point than #2, of course
08:42 PM XXCoder: interesting. glad I dont use dieasel lol
08:44 PM roycroft: in this part of the world one can almost run #2 year-round
08:44 PM roycroft: but in minnesota they'll switch to #1 in september
08:45 PM XXCoder: or as soon as they can make iceballs just by throwing cupful of water
08:45 PM XXCoder: ;)
08:45 PM roycroft: yeah, september :)
08:45 PM XXCoder: dec is when snowmen get out, because its too cold
08:45 PM roycroft: i was camping in north dakota in mid-august one year and there was frost one night
08:47 PM XXCoder: ouch heh
08:47 PM XXCoder: july-aug is hottest months here
08:50 PM roycroft: i am pondering driving my pickup on my camping trip
08:50 PM roycroft: it gets much worse fuel economy, and it's not very maneuverable, but being able to just toss all my stuff in the bed and take off is really appealing
08:51 PM roycroft: with the prius i have to put a roof rack on top of the car, and it's like a game of tetris fitting everying in the back seat, the trunk and the roof rack
08:52 PM roycroft: if i can pack and unpack in 10 minutes instead of an hour, that might be worth the slight extra expense in fuel
08:52 PM roycroft: and since i'm burning renewable diesel now, i'm not going to worry so much about my carbon footprint
08:55 PM * roycroft is also not going very far
08:56 PM roycroft: although as hot as it's going to be on monday, i might take the long long way there - driving straight to the coast as fast as i can
08:57 PM XXCoder: speed for me depends on definition lol
08:57 PM XXCoder: if inlet sea is ocean, then its really short drive for me
08:57 PM XXCoder: but if not, its more than hour west
09:02 PM roycroft: yeah, you can almost walk to the sound
09:02 PM roycroft: but i'm talking about where it gets a lot cooler
09:02 PM roycroft: and that means the ocean, not the sound or any other inlet
09:03 PM roycroft: the ac doesn't work too well in my pickup right now
09:03 PM roycroft: the vacuum pump is not working, so while i can run the ac, the cold air only comes out the defrost vents
09:03 PM roycroft: fords use vacuum to route air for the hvac system, and they default to defrost
09:04 PM roycroft: diesel engines don't produce vacuum like gasoline ones do, so they require a separate vacuum pump
09:04 PM roycroft: replacing mine is on my list, but i don't have it right now
09:04 PM roycroft: so if i drive the pickup i don't have good ac, and i'll want to be in the coastal air as quickly as possible
09:14 PM XXCoder: aw
09:15 PM XXCoder: bring a big block of ice with you
09:16 PM roycroft: there will be plenty of ice in the cooler
09:16 PM roycroft: i'll be ok
09:17 PM roycroft: i'll be leaving mid-day, before the peak temp of the day
09:17 PM roycroft: and i'm about 45 minutes from cool air
09:17 PM roycroft: er, cooler air
09:17 PM roycroft: the coast will be having a heat wave too
09:28 PM XXCoder: lol ok
