02:27 AM Loetmichel_: ouch. climbed out of the tub this morning, walked on the polished hardwood, slipped, did an involuntary split. Now my left knee and all my left toes hurt really bad. :( (the knee from the impact, the toes from overbending) Sometimes I am REALLY dumb :(
02:38 AM XXCoder: ow
02:38 AM Loetmichel_: indeed
02:38 AM Loetmichel_: working the clutch in the car on the way to work wasnt fun at all.
02:45 AM Deejay: moin
04:05 AM Tom_L: morning
04:06 AM travis_farmer: Morning
04:27 AM travis_farmer: well, i gave up on my own IRC server... nobody used it, and i couldn't configure ops correctly... :-(
04:44 AM JT-Cave1: morning
07:33 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:37 AM JT-Cave: 7i96s spindle is driving me nuts... just don't know what to do
07:49 AM JT-Cave: if hm2_7i96s.0.pwmgen.00.scale is set to 2000 does it limit the spindle speed no matter what the S word is set to?
07:50 AM travis_farmer: i think so, but not sure. maybe just ask in the program what the spindle max is?
07:51 AM JT-Cave: I'm trying to figure out how to set spindle min and max in the configuration files...
07:54 AM JT-Cave: oh well off to start my chicken day
07:54 AM travis_farmer: enjoy ;-)
08:38 AM JT-Cave: hmm Peter is not here...
08:57 AM Loetmichel: Btw: aftermath of my slipup this morning. And that bruise is coming from the inside. Doesn't quite FEEL broken though. -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=18137&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
09:32 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:40 AM Unterhausen: Today's a wrap folks, Loetmichel hurt himself
09:50 AM Loetmichel: Unterhausen: do you host a betting pool on me?
09:52 AM Unterhausen: no betting pool. Would have to be time-based.
09:57 AM rmu: girlfriend dropped a butter knife on her big toe, exactly edge-on on the "eponychium", the edge separating skin/toe. looks way worse, went through all kinds of funny colors from bright blue to dark blue green brown and now it is about to disapper 3-4 weeks after the incident.
10:26 AM roycroft: that sounds painful but colorful
10:36 AM travis_farmer: worst i have done is i shot a 16p air nail through my finger. wish i still had the picture, as it was years ago...
10:40 AM travis_farmer: i hate when i order something from "US Stock", and then get the tracking number... from China :-(
10:51 AM Unterhausen: They are keeping the ones in their U.S. stock for later
10:52 AM Unterhausen: was that ebay?
10:52 AM rmu: the US stock is the stock earmarked for US.
10:52 AM travis_farmer: yes, ebay
10:57 AM roycroft: china owns the us now - haven't you heard?
10:57 AM travis_farmer: :-(
11:02 AM roycroft: someone should start compiling a list of crazy extreme right wing untruths like that
11:02 AM roycroft: a list of crazy extreme left wing untruths would be useful too, but it would be a much smaller list
11:04 AM rmu: probably easier to make a list of facts
11:05 AM roycroft: the problem is that extremists on both sides conflate facts and "alternative facts"
11:05 AM roycroft: but yeah
11:14 AM skunkworks: But - what about the aliens?
11:29 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
11:30 AM Tom_L: rmu, the list would be much much shorter
11:31 AM Tom_L: skunkworks, they _are_ out there
11:33 AM Tom_L: just wait for James Webb's replacement and we'll see their beady little eye
11:34 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, any luck on the spindle stuff?
12:01 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, my pwmgen scale is set to 5600 which is also the max rpm
12:02 PM Tom_L: using a similar analog channel
12:20 PM JT-Cave: Tom_L, the 7i96s seems simple enough with the only spindle setting is scale (max rpm) if you're not doing a bi-directional spindle
12:21 PM Tom_L: mine is bidirectional but with a direction pin
12:21 PM JT-Cave: the rest would just be outputs for on/off and/or fwd/rev I "think"
12:21 PM JT-Cave: which card
12:21 PM Tom_L: umm 7i90 / 7i47s
12:22 PM Tom_L: but the 7i47s has the same analog circuit
12:22 PM JT-Cave: if using an output as direction then the spindle output is abs I "think"
12:22 PM Tom_L: and i dunno why but my max error is 200 and i can't set it that high in mesact
12:22 PM Tom_L: (if it works don't fix it...)
12:23 PM JT-Cave: some cards have 4 different PWM modes, PWM, PDM, UP/DOWN and something else iirc
12:23 PM Tom_L: i think it is abs as well
12:23 PM Tom_L: right
12:23 PM Tom_L: some settings you have i'm not using
12:24 PM Tom_L: max accel is set with the vfd
12:24 PM Tom_L: deadband etc
12:24 PM JT-Cave: gotta make a little shelf for down here to put power supplies on so I can hook it all up and measure the output
12:25 PM Tom_L: i _was_ gonna hook up the 7i96s and play but i feel a nap coming on
12:25 PM Tom_L: at least measure voltages etc
12:26 PM Tom_L: with no feedback the spindle would ramp to max pretty quicdk
12:26 PM Tom_L: quick
12:26 PM JT-Cave: hmm now I see why I need to use a PID with spindle, you can set max output among other things
12:26 PM Tom_L: it's a good idea
12:27 PM Tom_L: pid gave me alot better control of the bottom end rpm for sure
12:28 PM Tom_L: did peter suggest 20000 Hz for a pwm frequency?
12:28 PM JT-Cave: need to cobble up a small bookshelf
12:28 PM Tom_L: mine is 5k and again i'm not sure why
12:28 PM JT-Cave: iirc the man page said that's default
12:28 PM Tom_L: i use those rails on the wall so i can adjust the height
12:29 PM JT-Cave: hmm I have some of those and the shelf standards
12:29 PM JT-Cave: good idea
12:29 PM JT-Cave: nothing on the wall down here except itch so studs are easy to find lol
12:29 PM Tom_L: with different width melamine shelves and hangars
12:30 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/scope/scope1.jpg
12:30 PM Tom_L: it's changed but you can kinda see them there
12:31 PM travis_farmer: now i see how Tom_L does small soldering... ;-)
12:36 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/USBTiny_Mkii/batch1.jpg
12:37 PM Tom_L: i did ~200 of those that way before i build the toaster oven
12:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/reflow/cooking.JPG
12:39 PM travis_farmer: nice! i am surprised PCW doesn't outsource to you ;-)
12:40 PM Tom_L: he has his outsourced
12:40 PM travis_farmer: i know ;-)
12:41 PM Tom_L: and also has alot bigger operation
12:41 PM travis_farmer: yeah, he would have to, to keep up with demand
12:43 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you're not reading in the spindle stuff yet are you?
12:59 PM JT-Cave: reading in?
01:00 PM Tom_L: saving it to the hal file
01:01 PM Tom_L: i just entered my spindle settings and built but they weren't there yet
01:03 PM JT-Cave: I've not pushed the spindle stuff yet
01:03 PM Tom_L: ok
01:05 PM JT-Cave: gotta finger out what's broken on my chicken camera link... my guess is the cat is broken
01:12 PM roycroft: you use a cat as your network administrator?
01:12 PM roycroft: and you trust the cat to keep the chicken cam working?
01:13 PM * roycroft would suspect sabotage on the part of the cat so that any cat-chicken shenanigans would not be recorded
01:19 PM JT-Shop: well the cat is not good for much else, he's getting old and lazy
01:20 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/vehicles/c8/spoiler/
01:29 PM JT-Cave: well time to make a new cat cable
01:30 PM robotustra: let's cat do it's own cable
01:39 PM JT-Shop: well that would be the same as waiting to win the lottery
01:45 PM skunkworks: JT-Shop: awesome looking! Are you happy with it?
01:49 PM JT-Shop: yes, I'm super happy with it... drove 4k miles in 2 months in it
01:50 PM JT-Shop: it's so much better than the C5 it's surreal
01:52 PM * JT-Shop goes to run a new cat cable in the coop and run
01:54 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
02:37 PM Unterhausen: I got the led ring light I ordered on ebay by mistake. Fortunately it does fit my bridgeport
02:38 PM XXCoder: nice
02:38 PM Unterhausen: The mistake was I didn't check to see if it fit my bridgeport before ordering
02:44 PM roycroft: lights are good
02:45 PM JT-Cave: special place to put it?
02:58 PM * JT-Shop wonders if he should paint the replacement tray for the roll around seat or just leave it natural
03:07 PM Unterhausen: it's a ring light to go around the spindle. Most of the pre-built ones are for stereo microscopes, so too small for a bp spindle
03:08 PM JT-Shop: ah I know what you mean, I have one on my stereo microscope
03:08 PM Unterhausen: this is just the light, so I have to 3d print a mount
03:08 PM roycroft: i just got some more bright led work lights
03:09 PM roycroft: i'm trying to up my welding game, and one of my biggest problems is that i can't see what i'm welding
03:09 PM roycroft: my beads sometimes go all over the place
03:09 PM roycroft: a local welding shop worker suggested i use bright led lights behind and to the sides of the work, and turn off the overhead lights (which cause glare inside my welding helmet)
03:09 PM roycroft: so i'm working on that setup
03:14 PM JT-Shop: I wear stronger reading glasses when I weld so I can see up close
03:19 PM travis_farmer: sounds dangerous... i wear a welding helmet ;-)
03:23 PM roycroft: my welding helmet has a magnifying lens on the inside
03:23 PM roycroft: but i still can't see because it's too dark
03:24 PM roycroft: allegedly, shining the bright leds on the work will illuminate it enough that i'll be able to see it even while actively welding
03:24 PM JT-Shop: the magnifying lens never worked well for me they just seemed out of focus
03:24 PM JT-Shop: is it an auto darkening helmet?
03:24 PM roycroft: mine works fine, but you have to get one that is at the focal length you need
03:24 PM roycroft: yes, it is
03:25 PM roycroft: it's a very nice helmet - top of the line (at the time) jackson
03:25 PM roycroft: i spent more time researching welding helmets than welders when i bought my tig machine
03:29 PM roycroft: it's an older version of this: https://www.airgas.com/p/SEL46159
03:32 PM roycroft: actually, looking at the jackson website, i think it's that exact model
03:36 PM roycroft: no - it looks identical, but mine's the older version
03:37 PM Tom_L: are some of the auto darkening lenses faster than others?
03:37 PM JT-Cave: yes
03:38 PM Tom_L: haven't had my welder out in a while
03:38 PM Tom_L: i bet the tanks may have even expired
03:42 PM Tom_L: what # lens do you guys use? like 11 or 12?
03:42 PM Tom_L: i don't even remember if the auto darkening are measured that way
03:45 PM Tom_L: looks like they are
03:45 PM roycroft: i use 10 for mig
03:45 PM JT-Cave: I'd have to look and see
03:46 PM roycroft: i should use 11, especially if i start doing high current welding with the new machine
03:46 PM Tom_L: i was thinking mine was a 12 but i'd have to look too
03:46 PM roycroft: mine is settable from 9 to 12
03:46 PM roycroft: if i get my lighting sorted out so i can actually see, i'll chagne from 10 t0 11
03:47 PM Tom_L: i have some of the old glass i keep to watch an eclipse
03:47 PM Tom_L: double them up
03:49 PM roycroft: my helmet can also be set from 5-8 for torch welding/cutting
03:49 PM JT-Cave: I'm not sure if I still have any glass lenses but I still have a hand held I think
03:49 PM Tom_L: both my helmets are old but then.. so am i
03:49 PM roycroft: and it has a grinding mode where it doesn't darken at all, but i'd rather use a face shield while grinding - it's a lot cheaper than a welding helmet
03:50 PM roycroft: the old flux core/mig machine that i'm selling came with a hand-held shield
03:50 PM JT-Cave: mine has modes for grinding, burning and welding and each is settable IIRC
03:50 PM roycroft: i still have it, and i used it to watch the eclipse a few years ago
03:50 PM Tom_L: i hate using flux core..
03:50 PM Tom_L: spatters too much
03:50 PM roycroft: but hand held doesn't work well for welding, imo
03:50 PM roycroft: i like both hands to guide the torch
03:51 PM roycroft: when i bought that machine, like 25 years ago, it was flux core only
03:51 PM JT-Cave: works well for eclipse watching
03:51 PM roycroft: and i used it that way for a couple months, then i got the mig upgrade kit
03:51 PM roycroft: and i haven't done flux core since
03:52 PM roycroft: yeah, the hand-held shield was great for eclipse watching, especially since the last eclipse was in the middle of august
03:52 PM roycroft: i wouldn't want to be wearing a welding helmet outdoors that time of year
03:53 PM Tom_L: well with all the chaps & leathers it would be about the same temp :)
03:53 PM JT-Cave: I'm thinking about the next eclipse...
03:53 PM roycroft: i don't think there will be one with totality in my part of the world for a long time
03:53 PM Tom_L: ok, later... i'm voluntold i'm going to the store :)
03:53 PM JT-Cave: ok
03:54 PM * JT-Cave waits for the unicorn to finish eating
03:54 PM roycroft: the april '24 eclipse will be total in the central us, but not here
03:55 PM Tom_L: cool maybe i'll see it
03:55 PM roycroft: there won't be a total eclipse here again until after 2030
03:55 PM roycroft: april 8 of next year
03:55 PM roycroft: put it on your calendar :)
03:55 PM Tom_L: you'll have to remind me again...
03:56 PM roycroft: https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEplot/SEplot2001/SE2024Apr08T.GIF
03:58 PM Unterhausen: totality over Travis' house
03:59 PM Unterhausen: Travis's farm
03:59 PM roycroft: there won't be another total eclipse here this century
03:59 PM Unterhausen: how do you make the possessive for Travis?
04:00 PM roycroft: even the last one wasn't a total eclipse here - i had to drive north an hour to get to the zone of totality
04:00 PM roycroft: travis'
04:00 PM Unterhausen: Did we properly memorialize Robbie Robertson?
04:00 PM * roycroft did
04:00 PM Unterhausen: just want to make sure. The Sugar Man also passed
04:01 PM roycroft: but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph1GU1qQ1zQ
04:01 PM roycroft: but there
04:01 PM roycroft: everyone should watch that video
04:03 PM Unterhausen: Totality in places I wouldn't normally want to travel, but maybe I should
04:04 PM Unterhausen: Not sure Maine is where you want to be in early April
04:08 PM travis_farmer: Maine in early April is wet & frozen, with mud everywhere
04:09 PM Unterhausen: how about western NY?
04:09 PM travis_farmer: i think they get lake effect
04:09 PM Unterhausen: is Maine at least sunny at that time of year?
04:09 PM travis_farmer: sometimes
04:09 PM roycroft: "maine" is a fairly large area to generalize about that way
04:10 PM travis_farmer: in early April? the whole state is mud ;-)
04:10 PM travis_farmer: except portland... but we don't claim portland ;-)
04:11 PM roycroft: the first eclipse i remember was in '63
04:11 PM Unterhausen: well, if there isn't going to be any sun, I don't want any clouds covering that up
04:11 PM roycroft: i lived far away from totality, and i was a wee lad, so i could not drive to it
04:11 PM Unterhausen: all of Maine was under a rainstorm the other day, so it's not that big
04:12 PM roycroft: but i remember we got cardboard boxes, put pin holes in one side, and taped a sheet of white paper on the inside opposite the pinhole, and watched the eclipse that way
04:12 PM Unterhausen: how old are you?
04:12 PM travis_farmer: pin-hole cameras! i remember those!
04:12 PM roycroft: older than dirt :)
04:12 PM travis_farmer: LOL
04:12 PM Unterhausen: younger than me, I recall
04:12 PM roycroft: older than the space age
04:13 PM roycroft: younger than the nuclear age
04:13 PM XXCoder: dirt constantly regenerate so most of humanity is older than dirt ;)
04:13 PM Unterhausen: first monkey died in space in 1949, you aren't that old
04:14 PM * travis_farmer is only 43...
04:14 PM Unterhausen: I looked up equal area projection map of u.s. USGS says which one they use and don't post an example of it
04:15 PM Unterhausen: usual projection makes Maine look bigger
04:16 PM roycroft: the space age is generally considered to have begun with sputnik
04:16 PM travis_farmer: maine is 35,385 miĀ² large
04:17 PM Unterhausen: that's the space race
04:17 PM roycroft: maine is tiny
04:17 PM roycroft: 1/3 the size of oregon
04:17 PM travis_farmer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_area has it rank 39
04:18 PM Unterhausen: oregon is so big as you travel east you go back 50 years in time
04:19 PM roycroft: more like you travel south and you go back 100 years in time
04:20 PM Unterhausen: as soon as you hit the Idaho border
04:21 PM roycroft: or the douglas county line
04:22 PM roycroft: southern oregon is more idahoan than parts of idaho
04:23 PM Unterhausen: were the people on a trip in a school bus get harassed as antifa in southern or eastern oregon?
04:23 PM roycroft: one county in southern oregon voted a few years ago to abolish its sheriff's department
04:24 PM roycroft: and then they complained when it would take two hours for the state police to show up when there was an issue
04:24 PM roycroft: i think that was in southern oregon, but i barely recall the incident
04:24 PM roycroft: eastern oregonians tend to be very conservative, but in a live and let live way
04:25 PM roycroft: southern oregonians tend to be very maga
04:25 PM * travis_farmer hates maga...
04:27 PM roycroft: when the bundys took over the wildlife refuge in eastern oregon the townspeople and the sheriff wanted them to leave
04:27 PM travis_farmer: i mean, maybe it used to stand for something, but now it is just a propaganda hate group
04:27 PM roycroft: the ranchers whom they came to "protect" told them to leave
04:27 PM roycroft: nobody wanted them there
04:27 PM roycroft: they invaded from idaho, btw
04:28 PM XXCoder: roy yeah they even cut up wire fences and owner got angry on that also
04:28 PM roycroft: yes
04:28 PM XXCoder: the invaders cost so much more money on grazing fees than rest of them together
04:28 PM XXCoder: geez I wonder why theyre protesting grazing fees.
04:29 PM roycroft: and they got off scot-free, because some maga person managed to get on the jury
04:30 PM travis_farmer: ?!?!?! IRC has private messages?
04:32 PM roycroft: yes, it always has
04:32 PM travis_farmer: i just got "privatly" blasted for my political views, by "Anonymous"...
04:33 PM CloudEvil: You can turn off unregiustered private messages
04:33 PM XXCoder: erm I meant owed not cost earlier
04:33 PM travis_farmer: how?
04:34 PM travis_farmer: using Hexchat
04:36 PM XXCoder: setting somewhere, to accept only from registered or block all
04:37 PM XXCoder: never used it but it should exist in settings.
04:38 PM JT-Shop: I don't see any settings like that
04:39 PM travis_farmer: nor i
04:39 PM roycroft: being anti-maga is not a political view
04:39 PM roycroft: it's an anti-meanness/anti-hate view
04:39 PM roycroft: maga != conservative/republican
04:40 PM XXCoder: wait a min, it may be *server* setting not client
04:40 PM * roycroft will shut up now, and await his private chastisement
04:41 PM XXCoder: https://libera.chat/guides/usermodes
04:42 PM XXCoder: user mode R blocks unregistered users private messages
04:43 PM travis_farmer: ok, set
04:44 PM JT-Shop: how do you set that?
04:45 PM Tom_L: /chanserv option setting
04:45 PM travis_farmer: you type /mode JT-Shop +R
04:45 PM Tom_L: that or /nickserv xx xx
04:46 PM Tom_L: round one done, off for round two
04:46 PM JT-Shop: ah thanks
04:46 PM Tom_L: i hardly ever get pm'd by anon
04:47 PM Tom_L: and i don't ignore join/part since i'm op
04:47 PM Tom_L: never have
04:47 PM JT-Shop: I do
04:47 PM * travis_farmer wishes he was an op :-( ;-)
04:47 PM Tom_L: give you an idea how long someone has been there
04:47 PM JT-Shop: hmm camera works, cat checks out ok but when I plug the camera in it does not work...
04:48 PM * JT-Shop goes to try another port on the switch
04:48 PM XXCoder: I have norepeat script for hexchat to filter out repetive join and leaves
04:48 PM Tom_L: cable length?
04:48 PM Tom_L: shouldn't be..
04:48 PM JT-Shop: worked for a few years then quit
04:48 PM JT-Shop: 40- 50'
04:48 PM JT-Shop: if that long
04:49 PM Tom_L: i've got a hard line running to the shop
04:49 PM Tom_L: never had an issue there
04:49 PM travis_farmer: i have longer run than that on my cameras
04:49 PM Tom_L: wifi repeater & switch on the end
04:50 PM travis_farmer: my shop is a wireless PTP bridge though...
04:50 PM Tom_L: i turned an old crap router into a wifi repeater
04:52 PM JT-Shop: everything is hard wired here except the pellet stove and the laptops
04:53 PM Unterhaus_: I need a script to ghost myself when the internet goes down for 15 seconds
04:54 PM JT-Shop: I think I'll go replace the thingy on the end of the cat
04:54 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:54 PM travis_farmer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F3749S1/ that's what i use between the house and shop
04:56 PM travis_farmer: yay! my new-to-me server just shipped :-)
04:59 PM roycroft: most folks have the thingy on the end of their cat cut off to prevent excessive breeding
05:00 PM travis_farmer: lol
05:00 PM XXCoder: ethernet across power cable is a thing, if youre wondering
05:00 PM XXCoder: we use one, across extension cable to garage
05:02 PM Unterhausen: my experience with powerline ethernet is poor. I think I went through 3 different systems and they all failed after no more than 6 months
05:02 PM Unterhausen: super convenient though
05:03 PM XXCoder: interesting. ours is still going strong
05:06 PM Unterhausen: I just lacked the motivation to see if I could get them working again
05:06 PM Unterhausen: also could be a problem with our wiring
05:07 PM JT-Shop: hmm I guess I'll replace the thingy at the other end of the cat and see if that fixes it
05:09 PM Unterhausen: swap the wire end for end, that will fix it
05:10 PM roycroft: poe works fine if the cable is terminated well on both ends, is of sufficient size, if the switch can provide enough current for the poe device, and if the cable run is short enough to not suffer excessive current loss
05:11 PM roycroft: that's a number of ifs, though
05:11 PM XXCoder: not talking about poe but its inverse
05:11 PM Unterhausen: isn't cat6 supposed to use bigger wire?
05:11 PM roycroft: yes
05:11 PM roycroft: and i would recommend it for any poe installation
05:11 PM roycroft: but you still have the other variables
05:11 PM Unterhausen: that's good, because I bought cat 6 for my mesa smart serial boards based on that idea
05:12 PM * roycroft has decided to go take pics of his wiring harness in the rear of his pickup to see if he can make any sense of the butchery carried out by a previous owner
05:12 PM Unterhausen: I have a poe switch, but I don't remember why
05:13 PM roycroft: everything works except the reverse and license plate lights, but the cabling is a huge mess
05:13 PM roycroft: my truck has the factory tow package, which includes a jack for a trailer hookup
05:13 PM XXCoder: I guess you would have to trace all wires
05:13 PM Unterhausen: look for lumps in the bundle
05:14 PM roycroft: but the trailer hookup is spliced partially into the main wiring harness, and the tail light wires have been cut and spliced into the trailer hookup jack
05:14 PM roycroft: yeah, i'll trace things out, once i get a sense of what was done
05:14 PM Unterhausen: nobody knows how to make splices, even volkswagon. There was a splice on my daughter's car that caused no end of troubles
05:14 PM roycroft: there was a fifth wheel hitch in the bed, and there's a trailer hookup jack in the bed for it
05:14 PM roycroft: but the towing packages wiring is supposed to be set up for that
05:15 PM roycroft: i want to get rid of all the splices
05:15 PM Unterhausen: I probably should have set up my prius for lights when I was installing the hitch rack, but wanted to avoid wiring while on my back looking at the bottom of the car
05:15 PM roycroft: but there's the other problem - ford use proprietary (motorcraft) connectors for all their wiring, and i'm having a really hard time finding motorcraft connectors so i can build my own harnesses
05:16 PM Unterhausen: now I'm wondering if my leatherman is in there
05:16 PM roycroft: i want to just plug into the factory harness
05:16 PM roycroft: but i may have to resort to splicing into the factory harness, which is something i loathe doing
05:16 PM roycroft: anyway, time for some pics
05:20 PM Unterhausen: curt makes a kit with connectors for my car. $75, more than I want to spend, but it does include an isolator box
05:22 PM Unterhausen: amazing how many hitch accessories there are
05:25 PM JT-Shop: hmm the camera works in the garage but not connected to the switch in the coop...
05:31 PM roycroft: practically every wire has been cut, crimped with a barrel connector, and electrical taped
05:39 PM * Tom_L wonders if JT-Shop used type A on one end and type B on the other :)
05:39 PM * Tom_L also wonders why there is a need for two types
05:40 PM JT-Shop: cat cable tested good, used a patch cord to plug the camera into the switch and nada
05:40 PM Tom_L: does the switch blink?
05:41 PM JT-Shop: didn't look it's facing down... I'll take the switch off the mount tomorrow and look some more
05:41 PM JT-Shop: might need a new 8 port gigabit poe switch for the coop
05:41 PM Tom_L: green is good, yellow fair, none bad :)
05:42 PM Tom_L: the new modem has green & blue
05:42 PM Tom_L: green is still a connection but not as fast as blue
05:43 PM JT-Shop: most of mine have 2 leds for speed
05:46 PM Unterhausen: the chickens deserve nothing less than 2.5ghz
05:46 PM roycroft: because the chickens need gigabit ethernet so they can netflix and chill?
05:47 PM Unterhausen: I think they probably need many tv's like buffalo wild wings
05:47 PM Unterhausen: insensitive?
05:53 PM roycroft: i think they're more into foghorn leghorn
05:54 PM roycroft: and super chicken
05:54 PM JT-Shop: lol, he was my favorite rooster until I met my neighbors rooster Rooster Cogburn
06:00 PM Tom_L: maybe they deserve fiber
06:01 PM * JT-Shop deserves fiber
06:01 PM Tom_L: iirc it's not that far from you is it?
06:01 PM JT-Shop: 1.6 miles to unconnected fiber
06:02 PM XXCoder: jt https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/27d11314-22b1-4d66-8f5a-5e5e09009ace_1.8f5a118563b355b4e063c31c1265be50.jpeg
06:02 PM Unterhausen: there's fiber no more than 500 feet from our house. Might as well be 500 miles
06:03 PM Unterhausen: verizon used to say they were going to run it down our street, now they offer us cellular internet
06:03 PM Unterhausen: I want my easment back if they aren't going to use it
06:07 PM Tom_L: you sound like my friend that woke up one morning to a big hole being dug in his front lawn for a large sewage lift station for the new neighborhood they're putting in next to him
06:07 PM Tom_L: they were digging on the wrong propterty
06:07 PM XXCoder: ouch lol
06:11 PM JT-Shop: night
06:11 PM XXCoder: have good night
07:06 PM Unterhausen: I'm making something to store my planes and I'm wondering if I need 2 stanley 7 planes
07:07 PM Unterhausen: I also have a miller falls 22, which is the same size but it has been ground square
07:08 PM skunkworks: lol - I read that as air planes.. Boy - that took a couple seconds to figure out...
07:10 PM Unterhausen: I've found it's really hard to get rid of airplaines
07:10 PM Unterhausen: airplanes
07:10 PM Unterhausen: faa trying to kill model aviation dead
07:11 PM skunkworks: Fiber.. what a scam.. I had the local fiber company quote for running some fiber runs in our factory.. It came back around $35K I bought a fiber splicer for $1k - couple rolls of fiber for $1K and pigtails and boxes for another $1k or so.. The fiber splicer is pretty freaking amazing.. No suprises - have not had to do anything since we installed all the runs.
07:13 PM skunkworks: https://youtu.be/ypBunFtrOrE
07:55 PM Unterhausen: I was working on fiber at one time. The owner of the company had some good ideas and some totally pointless ideas
07:55 PM Unterhausen: of course, I was working on the totally pointless ideas
07:56 PM Unterhausen: checks cashed though
08:05 PM Unterhausen: one of the pointless things I worked on was a fiber cleaver
08:22 PM skunkworks: the cleaver came with the splicer.. we will never wear it out..
09:23 PM roycroft: i used to have an easy bake oven fiber terminator
09:23 PM roycroft: back in the days when i was doing internal stuff with multimode fiber
09:23 PM roycroft: and we could tolerate 3db loss at a termination
09:24 PM roycroft: fusion splicers have come way down in price - back then the started at about $45k
10:13 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:53 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
10:54 PM solarwind: roycroft did you figure out what that thing in your trailer wheel assembly is?
11:18 PM roycroft: yeah, it's an old style magnetic brake
11:18 PM XXCoder: how do it work?
11:18 PM roycroft: i still haven't determined whether i can reasonably repair it or not
11:19 PM roycroft: but parts are not available
11:20 PM roycroft: the ring on the axle side generates a magnetic field which attracts the ring on the hub side
11:20 PM roycroft: there's a tab on the bottom of the hub ring, and when it is attracted to the axe ring while the trailer is moving there is resistance, which causes the tab to press against the brake shoes
11:21 PM roycroft: and engage them
11:32 PM XXCoder: so its braking constantly? not quite understand that
11:35 PM roycroft: no
11:35 PM roycroft: it's an electromagnet
11:35 PM roycroft: so it only brakes when you feed power to the magnet
11:36 PM roycroft: you install a trailer brake controller in the towing vehicle
11:36 PM roycroft: that controller is connected to the brake pedal switch
11:36 PM XXCoder: ahh I see
11:36 PM XXCoder: interesting. I wonder if its better
11:36 PM XXCoder: probably much less wear
11:37 PM roycroft: no, the magnet part is just to engage the brakes
11:37 PM roycroft: it uses standard brake shoes and drums
11:37 PM XXCoder: ahh ok
11:37 PM roycroft: the tab on the magnet pressed the brake shoes when the magnet is on
11:37 PM XXCoder: normal uses pressure and soleoid(?) correct?
11:37 PM roycroft: so it's an electro-mechanical brake system
11:37 PM roycroft: a hydraulic piston
11:38 PM XXCoder: ok
