01:09 AM travis_farmer: Morning :coffee:
01:44 AM randy: morning
01:46 AM Deejay: moin
04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
04:28 AM Tom_L: nice T-storm just moved thru 72°F
04:29 AM travis_farmer: 62F/74F 100%rh
04:33 AM Loetmichel_: Hmm, someone here that can help me calculate a slight CAD problem?
04:34 AM Loetmichel_: <. has to make an 1mm sheet metal plate with a "z" fold at the ends of 1mm height and the 1mm step is 45°. Any idea how much excess material i should design in to meet the specified lengh after bending?
04:34 AM Loetmichel_: i intend to make a simple die to form the Z. Its only Aluminium
05:07 AM JT-Cave1: morning
05:16 AM rmu: Loetmichel_: how thick is your material?
05:27 AM Loetmichel_: 1mm alu
05:28 AM Loetmichel_: i already solved it. I'll just elongate it 0,41mm to cover the "diagonal" of the 1mm step and hope the K factor is 0.5 . Should fit.
05:28 AM Loetmichel_: I will tell when its done
05:28 AM Loetmichel_: @ rmu
06:10 AM JT-Cave1: rooster just crowed
06:17 AM travis-farmer: Mmmm, Jimmey Dean Meat Lovers Breakfast Bowl :-)
06:21 AM rmu: Loetmichel_: is that even possible? 1mm thick sheet metal bent to a Z with 45° and 1mm length of / seems kinda impossible
06:22 AM travis-farmer is now known as travis_farmer
06:22 AM Loetmichel_: rmu: [13:21] <Loetmichel_> Hmm... $me is just making a die for the press out of PLA to form those IO-shields. I am really curious if that will work. :)
06:23 AM Loetmichel_: and its not 1mm length of the / its 1mm HEIGHT difference. aka: the "ears" on the side are screwed in, the middle part is flush with the rest of the hole
06:32 AM rmu: Loetmichel_: nevermind I probably misunderstood
07:00 AM JT-Cave1: https://radar.weather.gov/station/KPAH/standard
07:00 AM JT-Cave1: weird rain formations
07:01 AM travis_farmer: looks like water drops in a puddle...
08:31 AM JT-Cave1: looks different now
09:13 AM skunkwor1s is now known as skunkworks
09:13 AM skunkworks: hey - that still works
09:24 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:28 AM JT-Shop: getting noisy here
09:42 AM * JT-Shop drills some holes in the C8
10:29 AM skunkworks: Needs to be lighter?
10:40 AM JT-Shop: installing a Z51 spoiler
10:40 AM skunkworks: Nice!
10:40 AM JT-Shop: looked nakid back there without it
10:43 AM JT-Shop: had to pull the bumper off to install it
10:43 AM skunkworks: Yikes.. How was it? lots of plastic fasteners and clips?
10:44 AM JT-Shop: lot of screws, the mud guards have 4 clips each but the rest are screws
10:45 AM Deejay: re
10:45 AM JT-Shop: the worst was the two 10mm nuts that hold the rear top to the quarter panel... no room to work
10:46 AM roycroft: speaking of which, my pickup does not have mud flaps, and i'm pretty sure it sits high enough that they're required in oregon
10:46 AM roycroft: that's something i recently had to add to my list of things to investigate and fix, when i found out that we have a requirement for mud flaps
10:48 AM * roycroft wonders why he can migrate websites to a new host across the internet quickly, but when using the same tools to migrate from localhost to localhost he gets network timeouts
10:51 AM JT-Shop: https://imagebin.ca/v/7WIFAK6nu8ZB
10:51 AM JT-Shop: https://imagebin.ca/v/7WIFLFccTyHl
10:54 AM Scopeuk: that is a front valance and a whole a front valance should go in
10:54 AM Scopeuk: s/whole/hole
10:55 AM JT-Shop: https://imagebin.ca/v/7WIGV3qq03wT
11:14 AM JT-Shop: nap time
11:15 AM Tom_L: barely had it and you're already tearing it up!
11:22 AM JT-Shop: at least I have 4k miles on it, a chap on the forum just took his apart with less than 100 miles on the clock
11:22 AM JT-Shop: it does look a whole lot better
11:22 AM JT-Shop: now for some quality napping
11:24 AM roycroft: you have 4k miles on your new car already?
11:24 AM * roycroft bought his pickup well before jt got his car, and has put less than 1000 miles on it
11:28 AM Tom_L: you should get out more often
11:55 AM roycroft: perhaps i should
12:07 PM Unterhausen: my car has 13k miles on it. Bought it just before the pandemic hit
12:09 PM roycroft: i was putting about 12k miles/year on my prius in the before times
12:09 PM roycroft: now it's more like 6k/year
12:09 PM roycroft: not commuting to work any more is really nice
12:15 PM JT-Shop: yup we love going places in the C8 and doesn't take much to get it out
12:16 PM JT-Shop: it's 2 months old
12:17 PM Unterhausen: wow, time flies so fast. Next you know the C8's going to be going off to college
12:20 PM roycroft: so it will be hanging out with loose women and playing beer pong with busch light
12:21 PM Unterhausen: There is finally something I want to buy at harbor freight, I have a 25% off coupon, but it's out of stock
12:21 PM * JT-Shop goes to put the fun screws and nuts back in the terribly tight place
12:57 PM Unterhausen: if you have a giant bandsaw blade that's folded, do you just throw it off the deck to unfold it?
01:00 PM Unterhausen: apparently there's a proper method, who knew?
01:00 PM JT-Shop: some do, some use a board, I just unfold it
01:01 PM JT-Shop: what I have a problem with is folding it up if there are more than 3 coils
01:09 PM travis_farmer: here i sit at home... all alone... with no money left in credit (or not much anyway). so no impulse spending. some may see this as a good thing, but i am bored out of my mind, shopping for something i will never be able to afford... yet not so bored that i could take a nap. :-(
01:15 PM Unterhausen: travis, are you in Maine?
01:15 PM travis_farmer: yes
01:15 PM Unterhausen: weather looked bad there yesterday
01:16 PM travis_farmer: yeah, washed out many roads
01:16 PM Unterhausen: I'm glad we just got the outer part of that storm, it was bad enough
01:17 PM Unterhausen: our internet has been pretty awful
01:17 PM travis_farmer: lucky. some places here are completely cut off, with roads out, and some have lost power as well
01:20 PM travis_farmer: my internet is fine. well, as fine as Cable internet can be ;-)
01:20 PM Unterhausen: it's been consistently bad, I am starting to wonder if they put a tap on it again
01:21 PM Unterhausen: I suppose I should go check the modem to see if it's showing signs of that
01:21 PM travis_farmer: why would they put a tap? you downloading something illegal? ;-)
01:22 PM Unterhausen: our wiring wasn't good, putting noise back on their network
01:22 PM Unterhausen: but I fixed that, I think
01:23 PM JT-Shop: was going to wash the wheels while they were off but didn't feel like taking a shower at the same time
01:23 PM JT-Shop: maybe with some flip flops and in my birthday suit...
01:23 PM Unterhausen: you could wear a swimsuit, just sayin
01:23 PM travis_farmer: you need a shower JT, i can tell from here... ;-) (kidding)
01:23 PM JT-Shop: no one would see...
01:24 PM JT-Shop: https://radar.weather.gov/station/kpah/standard
01:25 PM Unterhausen: I woke up this morning at 4:30 and my neighbor was on his back porch. It looked suspiciously like he was peeing. Not saying I haven't done the same when one of our dogs was old and needed to go out every day at 4am
01:25 PM JT-Shop: can't see my neighbors even in winter when the leaves are off the trees
01:26 PM travis_farmer: sounds like a dream, JT. :-)
01:27 PM Unterhausen: we used to have trees that blocked the view, but they are hemlocks, and all the lower branches have died off due to the bugs
01:28 PM Unterhausen: I'm going to let bill gates have his way with my computer, see ya
01:28 PM travis_farmer: i am in town. if my window shades are not down, i can't even change my undershorts without the neighbors getting a show...
01:39 PM Unterhausen: gentleman farmer, in town farm?
01:40 PM travis_farmer: i don't have a farm
01:41 PM Unterhausen: I had a grandfather that was a farmer without a farm.
01:42 PM Unterhausen: I have wondered if some of his problems had to do with the quakers splitting into two groups
01:54 PM Unterhausen: one of my Indian friends didn't know what a covered wagon was
01:55 PM Unterhausen: disambiguating: Desi
01:58 PM roycroft: maui is really burning up
01:59 PM roycroft: we don't hear about wildfires in hawaii much
02:08 PM Unterhausen: I saw that. Fire is in town
02:08 PM travis_farmer: there, just put my old Dell PowerEdge 1950 up for sale on FB Marketplace... $150, though i may not even get that from it...
02:09 PM Unterhausen: I have a dell desktop I should sell
02:10 PM Unterhausen: afraid to put it on marketplace though
02:10 PM travis_farmer: yeah, a lot of scams on marketplace to filter through
02:22 PM Unterhausen: I want to use steel studs to hang drywall from the ceiling. Not quite resilient channel, but close
02:23 PM Unterhausen: nobody does it, so I must be missing something
02:24 PM roycroft: i never worked on commercial buildings when i was doing construction work, and at the time, pretty much 100% of residential builds used wood studs, so i don't know what the deal is
02:25 PM roycroft: i wonder of metal ceiling studs would tend to sag, though
02:25 PM roycroft: s/of/if/
02:26 PM JT-Shop: I've been on many jobs with metal stud walls and I've never seen any that "hang" from the ceiling they all were nailed to the concrete floor
02:26 PM Unterhausen: resilient steel channel is big in high-end residential now. THat's why it costs way too much to buy any
02:27 PM Unterhausen: the channel isn't so bad, but the hangers are about $10 apiece and you need lots of them
02:27 PM roycroft: we have a lot of wood here in my part of the world
02:27 PM roycroft: although it's burning up pretty fast these days
02:28 PM Unterhausen: 2x3 is the perfect depth to fur out this ceiling, which is what steel studs are
02:28 PM Unterhausen: we have a lot of wood around here, bugs are eating it all
02:28 PM Unterhausen: we are on the edge of the embargoed forests
02:29 PM roycroft: i just had an hour-long phone conversation with our new site manager about the emerald ash borer
02:29 PM roycroft: we hope it's not here yet
02:29 PM Unterhausen: I wish I had used steel when I redid the walls in the basement. Fighting with wood 2x4 was painful
02:29 PM roycroft: but we know it's near
02:30 PM roycroft: 3-5 years by wind, but an hour and a half by car
02:30 PM roycroft: and eab loves to hitchhike
02:30 PM Unterhausen: yeah, it's a problem
02:30 PM Unterhausen: people help them a lot
02:31 PM Unterhausen: seems like the sawmills west of here are mostly gone
02:31 PM roycroft: in washington county, the only county in oregon where eab has been confirmed, there's a $10k fine for transporting firewood or live edge wood
02:31 PM roycroft: we're not going to contain it
02:31 PM roycroft: but we may be able to slow it down
02:43 PM Unterhausen: in the areas around here, you can't transport wood, periodt
02:43 PM Unterhausen: maybe it's working, hasn't gotten to here yet
02:46 PM Unterhausen: can't import firewood into PA
02:47 PM XXCoder: live edge = bark?
02:48 PM Unterhausen: can be debarked
02:48 PM Unterhausen: I think, unless the term is being used loosely
02:48 PM XXCoder: ranging from bark to parts just under bark I guess?
02:59 PM Unterhausen: the wood I see being transported has all been debarked. Too many bugs probably
03:02 PM roycroft: what is really needed is a ban on non-milled, non-kiln-dried lumber
03:03 PM roycroft: but it's pretty much impossible to determine at a glance whether a board has been kiln-dried or air-dried
03:03 PM roycroft: as far as the washington county ban, i think they're looking for bark
03:04 PM roycroft: if it's been debarked and infected, one can tell pretty easily, though
03:04 PM roycroft: if it has bark it's very difficult to tell
03:05 PM roycroft: but regardless of how it's being enforced, the $10k fine shows that they're serious about containment
03:17 PM CloudEvil: $10K per how much?
03:26 PM roycroft: any violation
03:26 PM roycroft: one stick of wood
03:26 PM CloudEvil: That's rather low if it's a log trailer.
03:27 PM roycroft: i don't live in washington county
03:27 PM roycroft: and i don't know if it's $10k per stick of wood or no
03:27 PM roycroft: t
03:39 PM CloudEvil: ah
03:40 PM CloudEvil: Infecious diseases are nasty hard to eradicate shit
03:40 PM JT-Cave1: well I was going out to the shop but the deer family is in the driveway
03:40 PM Tom_L: that doe might kick yer arse
03:40 PM JT-Cave1: yup
03:41 PM roycroft: almost all the ash trees in oregon are going to die
03:41 PM roycroft: it's a matter of when, not if
03:41 PM roycroft: at the fair, we're working on establishing a nursery to grow non-ash replacement trees
03:41 PM CloudEvil: In principle drone and similar control measures could help. But it's a massive effort.
03:42 PM roycroft: and are considering pre-emptive logging of ash trees before they are infected, and replacing them with our nursery stock
03:42 PM roycroft: when eab infects a tree it dies within a year, two years max, and the tree is extremely dangerous as soon as it dies
03:42 PM roycroft: it becomes brittle and can fall donw
03:42 PM roycroft: also, the lumber is unusable, even as firewood, after it dies
03:42 PM roycroft: all we can do is chip it
03:43 PM XXCoder: wouldnt chipping it make it worse y spreading?
03:43 PM roycroft: if we pre-emptively log live trees before they're infected we can harvest the lumber
03:43 PM roycroft: chips have to be <2.5cm
03:43 PM roycroft: otherwise yes, it will still spread
03:43 PM XXCoder: so no bug and eggs live though if small
03:43 PM Tom_L: not to exceed
03:44 PM roycroft: the lavae will never make it to adulthood
03:44 PM Tom_L: https://secure.sos.state.or.us/oard/viewSingleRule.action?ruleVrsnRsn=158467
03:44 PM roycroft: so the reproduction cycle stops
03:44 PM roycroft: yes, not to exceed
03:45 PM roycroft: but the forestry department are being pretty militant about it
03:46 PM roycroft: https://www.lawn-tek.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/EAB-before-after-1024x418.jpg
03:48 PM XXCoder: its blended so perfectly it looks like one image
03:48 PM XXCoder: but yeah damage looks bad ouch
03:48 PM roycroft: it's pretty much 100% fatal
03:48 PM roycroft: if you have an ash tree and the eab shows up, you have a dead ash tree
03:49 PM roycroft: there is a biologically-derived innoculant that will save many of the trees if it's applied before infestation
03:49 PM XXCoder: how long do it last?
03:50 PM roycroft: it's expensive - averaging around $125/tree - must be applied every two years or so, and is about 50% effective
03:50 PM roycroft: it is injected into the tree - it's not sprayed or poured on the ground
03:50 PM XXCoder: not too bad really
03:50 PM roycroft: not too bad if you're a home owner with one ash tree
03:50 PM roycroft: we have thousands, probably tens of thousands, of ash trees on the fair propery
03:51 PM roycroft: even our designated heritage trees - the specimens we really want to save - are going to be in the hundreds by the time we're finished with our tree inventory
03:51 PM roycroft: so we're talking tens of thousands of dollars per year
03:51 PM XXCoder: ouch
03:52 PM roycroft: our land is over 500 acres, and we may be acquiring more soon
03:52 PM roycroft: but if we let the trees die, it can cost $1000 or more per tree to remove
03:53 PM roycroft: and as i said, there is zero commercial value for an infected tree
03:53 PM XXCoder: too bad theres no post-infection treatment
03:53 PM roycroft: if we cut them live, pre-infection, we can make a little money
03:53 PM roycroft: but once infected they are totally worthless, and extremely dangerous
03:55 PM XXCoder: yeah better do that than just go it go on longer, lose value AND more chances of infecting others
03:56 PM roycroft: we have three eab trap trees on our land now
03:57 PM roycroft: we're the only place in oregon with traps other than the portland metro area
03:58 PM Tom_L: how does that work?
04:01 PM roycroft: a tree is girdled, which will distress it and then kill it
04:02 PM roycroft: the eab is attracted to stressed trees, so if it is present, it will infect the trap trees
04:02 PM roycroft: at the end of the season the trap trees are felled and inspected
04:03 PM roycroft: the eab infects the upper part of the tree, so the trees cannot be inspected from the ground
04:06 PM roycroft: we're going to be doing some drone mapping of the trees as well
04:07 PM roycroft: since the eab distresses the trees, there will be changes in the canopy after infection
04:07 PM roycroft: we'll be flying drones over the property periodically and comparing photos of the canopy to identify infected trees
04:08 PM roycroft: also, late in the infection, shortly before the tree dies, it attracts woodpeckers, so we can tell by increased woodpecker activity when trees are infected
04:15 PM JT-Shop: hmm
04:22 PM CloudEvil: We have the technology! We can upgrade them! Carbide-tipped woodpeckers.
04:23 PM roycroft: beak-tipped woodpeckers seem to do a pretty effective job
04:23 PM * roycroft can't imagine having to repeatedly smash his teeth into a tree in order to eat dinner
04:42 PM Unterhausen: people are setting up beaglebones every day, why is it such a mystery?
04:52 PM skunkworks: Unterhausen: they are? Who? I only hear it on the mailing list..
04:52 PM skunkworks: ;)
04:53 PM Unterhausen: pocketnc for one
04:53 PM Unterhausen: there were a batch of beaglebones at the meetup
04:55 PM skunkworks: scraping the bottom of the parts barrel...
04:55 PM skunkworks: https://electronicsam.com/images/emco/PXL_20230809_214801051.MP.jpg
04:55 PM Unterhausen: was that literally at the bottom of a barrel?
04:56 PM Unterhausen: I have some radio shack parts in my stash, not sure about any archer parts
04:56 PM skunkworks: bottom of the drawer.. Have some nixi tubes to from radiosack..
04:56 PM skunkworks: too
04:56 PM Unterhausen: they sold nixie tubes?
04:57 PM Unterhausen: I have some test equipment with nixie tubes, can't throw them away because of that
04:57 PM skunkworks: the radio shack by us would have a mystery box for like $20 dollars.. it was full of random stuff like that. Dad always bought them..
04:57 PM skunkworks: I am now afraid to open it.. Might be worth something.. lol
04:58 PM skunkworks: I guess I do have some similar mosfets coming tomorrow.. I just couldn't wait.
04:58 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, what's the lead time to get one of those now?
04:58 PM Tom_L: :)
04:59 PM skunkworks: Um somewere between tomorrow and never..
05:00 PM Unterhausen: I forgot they had their own numbering
05:01 PM skunkworks: They sold just enough parts that I was able to actually do things when I was a kid.
05:01 PM Unterhausen: I thought you could run lcnc on beaglebone, but they have the driver for the coprocessor
05:02 PM skunkworks: They had dry transfer sheets for making circuit boards. It was awesome!
05:02 PM Unterhausen: I bought one of the mystery boxes. They had a surplus store in columbus that was far better than any of their stores
05:02 PM Unterhausen: I might still have some of the transfer sheets
05:02 PM skunkworks: I might too.. But I would probably never make one like that again..
05:03 PM Unterhausen: I am pretty sure I have a stencil for laying out circuits with ink
05:03 PM skunkworks: I started out using finger nail polish..
05:03 PM Unterhausen: it's nice how easy it is to have them made
05:03 PM skunkworks: right.
05:03 PM Unterhausen: I have some hand-made circuit boars still lying around
05:04 PM skunkworks: I started milling them - which was slightly better than having to deal with acid and easier to do double sided..
05:04 PM Unterhausen: I need to purge my junkpile
05:04 PM skunkworks: but I only made a handfull
05:05 PM Unterhausen: I have the router from a pcboard router. 4 lead brushless motor. Never did figure out how to drive it
05:05 PM Unterhausen: they sell drivers for motors like that on amazon for cheap, dunno if they would work
05:06 PM skunkworks: I had a hermes? engraver that i was going to do circuit boards with - but I sold it
05:09 PM CaptHindsight: still no bridge and the logs are down
05:15 PM XXCoder: roycroft: interesting indeed. nice to have tech to make it easier eh
05:27 PM roycroft: we had a mail server for years and years whose hosthame was hermes
05:27 PM roycroft: it was apt
05:27 PM roycroft: as it is for an engraver company
05:33 PM skunkworks: Unterhausen: My scewed memory is that the beagle bone black was pretty underpowered to run an os.. It did have the pru's that made it almost vialble..
05:34 PM skunkworks: So most of the applications I saw running the beagle bone was 3d printers - with some sort of gui that ran on something else..
05:37 PM XXCoder: roy do site employ drone operators or do you guys do it yourselves?
07:33 PM Unterhausen: problem with the beagleboard is that the video is underpowered. Processing is fine
08:03 PM skunkworks: sure
08:18 PM skunkworks: although - it seems like a rpi4 + mesa would be a better solution..
08:22 PM skunkworks: (well - a normal pc would probably be the best..)
08:35 PM roycroft: since when have pcs been normal?
08:42 PM skunkworks: since they run mircosoft programs?
08:44 PM roycroft: robbie robertson has left the building :(
08:55 PM XXCoder: did you see my question earlier?
09:06 PM roycroft: if you're talking to me, no
09:07 PM XXCoder: oh well question is this
09:07 PM XXCoder: roy do site employ drone operators or do you guys do it yourselves?
09:07 PM roycroft: we've done some testing ourselves
09:07 PM roycroft: i'm not sure if we'll hire professional drone operators with high end drones or not
09:07 PM roycroft: we're still in the early stages of that work
09:08 PM XXCoder: interesting. considering the cost it might be worth it to employ one to check a section in some form of scheduling.
09:09 PM XXCoder: nah those bugs is nasty :(
09:54 PM roycroft: we're quite a few conversations away from having a good plan
09:54 PM XXCoder: yeah best to plan stuff down
10:25 PM roycroft: i left my laser enclosure base outside for a bit this afternoon while i was working in my fab shop and it warped in the sun
10:25 PM XXCoder: ouch
10:25 PM roycroft: i brought it back inside the shop, and it seems to be flattening out again
10:25 PM roycroft: but i'm not sure if it will flatten completely
10:25 PM XXCoder: humidity difference?
10:25 PM roycroft: heat
10:25 PM roycroft: it was in the direct sun, which is my fault
10:26 PM roycroft: the machine does not sit directly on the base, so it's not going to make it unusuable
10:26 PM roycroft: but i'd rather the base were flat
10:29 PM XXCoder: hopefully it'll be fine
10:30 PM roycroft: it will
10:31 PM roycroft: and if it dosn't relax enough on its own i have things i can do to get it flat agin
10:40 PM XXCoder: nice
11:05 PM roycroft: i think it will flatten out enough
