04:45 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:01 AM travis_farmer[m4: Hmm, i think the bridge is dropping posts again...
05:02 AM travis_farmer[m4: matrix --> discord bridge is REALLY dropping, as in i think it died ;)
05:18 AM travis_farmer: 54F/72F @ 96%rh (in case it got lost in the bridge...)
05:34 AM CloudEvil: It did not
06:03 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
06:08 AM JT-Cave: well I managed to open the doors to the coops without spooking the deer
07:12 AM Lcvette[m]: <zincboy_ca_on[m]> "I think you would use the IDX+/..." <- zincboy_ca_on: the IDX+/IDX- on TB3 is for spindle i thought?
07:23 AM mrec: does anyone have experience with cutting sheet metal with a plasma cutter?
07:24 AM mrec: I think cutting something like 0.8 - 1mm
07:29 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:42 AM JT-Cave: by hand and cnc
07:42 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
07:50 AM rmu: mrec: cutting sheet metal is probably the number one use-case for a plasma cutter.
07:52 AM mrec: rmu: do you know would 0.8 - 1mm work fine with it?
07:52 AM rmu: IME aluminium, stainless steel and steel in range 0,6-2mm cuts really nice even with cheap plasma cutters, no experience with thicker stuff
07:53 AM mrec: okay maybe I should build a small machine for my purpose
08:08 AM JT-Shop: I've cut as small as 24 gauge and up to 1/2" on my plasma cutter
08:28 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
08:58 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
09:22 AM roycroft: self-serve fueling will soon be legal throughout oregon
09:22 AM roycroft: another victim of covid-19 :(
09:28 AM Scopeuk: attended fuelling sounds so weird to me, in the uk self serve has been the norm since some point in the 70's? certainly before I was born
09:28 AM Scopeuk: there is one down the road from me with has and attendant, its rather quaint
09:30 AM * travis_farmer[m4 uploaded an image: (321KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/BSvYeDATPoEKcJwBjTcqtkES/364178645_779381817522643_8875400958326823446_n.jpg >
09:30 AM travis_farmer[m4: found this long-exposure night picture of my town... very nice indeed, i think :-)
09:37 AM CloudEvil: :)
09:42 AM JT[m]: Lcvette there's a C7 behind me in the car wash
09:42 AM Lcvette[m]: 😄
09:42 AM Lcvette[m]: drag race!
09:46 AM Lcvette[m]: run away
09:46 AM Lcvette[m]: lol
09:46 AM Lcvette[m]: tell him your other car is a C8 and see if he rolls his eyes
09:47 AM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (284KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/OXICpeCknOvRRLudbnoobMjV/20230731_094512.jpg >
09:47 AM Scopeuk: or a C5 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinclair_C5
09:49 AM Lcvette[m]: 😄
09:50 AM JT[m]: Lol
10:23 AM rmu: my C8 looked like that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurovans#/media/File:Citro%C3%ABn_C8_front.jpg
10:29 AM JT-Shop: that would go through the car wash no problem
10:39 AM Rab: Never heard of the Sinclair C5, but it strikes me as way ahead of its time.
10:58 AM Scopeuk: Rab in some ways yes, it does have some major drawbacks though. partially through the tech of the time and partially that Clive Sinclair was involved so cost optimised was the main criteria
10:59 AM Scopeuk: it has a binary throttle, the motors nicely have over heating protection, but riding up hill will cause an over heat
10:59 AM Scopeuk: and based on the battery tech of the time range is pathetic
10:59 AM Scopeuk: the concept is very cool though
11:08 AM Rab: Scopeuk, binary throttle sounds awful. I didn't expect much range from a single 12V lead-acid battery. Way ahead of its time though, there are a lot of similar vehicles on the market now. It would be interesting to retrofit one with li-ion packs.
11:35 AM Scopeuk: someone decided they were worth money in the last couple of years so I imagine there is a lot of restomod stuff now happening
11:45 AM travis_farmer[m4: And the thunder rolls... :-)
11:58 AM * travis_farmer[m4 uploaded an image: (1164KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/qGNrjQjATEARsqkANnCQHTvj/Screenshot%202023-07-31%20at%2012-54-50%20Radar.png >
12:04 PM Unterhausen: air conditioning repairman supposed to be here at noon, +/- an hour. No call no show so far
12:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Unterhausen: AC all out or just can't keep up during the day?
12:10 PM Unterhausen: one of the indoor units of the minisplit won't stay on. Blink code doesn't seem to mean anything
12:10 PM Unterhausen: It's the indoor unit that cools my study, so it's important to me
12:13 PM Rab: Units in my system do that when they're set to conflicting modes with the remote. E.g. if the system is cooling and one inadvertently gets set to e.g. heat pump or dehumidify.
12:14 PM Chris-D: Hi! I have installed LinuxCNC 2.8.4 under Linux Mint in a Virtual Box and want to test a 7i76e card. The card has IP address 10.0.0.80, my PC 10.0.0.2. In the VB I can ping the 7i76 and also use mesaflash for reading/writing its config. But when using halrun and try loadrt hm2_eth ... (after loadrt hostmot2) I cannot connect to the card. Of course
12:14 PM Chris-D: it is no good idea to use a VM but it's only for tests (blinking the status leds etc.) - first question: is it possible to use the 7i76 in a VM?
12:16 PM Rab: Unterhausen, you could try power-cycling the whole system (my Daikin setup powers all the wall units from the condenser, which has a 240VAC breaker). Then turn all the indoor units back on with the same remote.
12:17 PM travis_farmer[m4: i think i would stay away from a VM to run LinuxCNC, myself. not sure about others opinions...
12:20 PM Unterhausen: vm seems like it's asking for trouble, particularly i/o. Speaking from a state of ignorance, I doubt they would be happy opening a port for your vm no using standard methods
12:21 PM Unterhausen: Rab, never thought of using the same remote. We have different kinds of indoor units that use a different remote
12:21 PM Unterhausen: This is a recurring issue and I would like to know what's going on
12:23 PM Chris-D: Yeah, I know - it's only for a few tasts with the new card. The later system will run on an ITX board - without a VM of course ;-) So the reason for the errors could be the VM? Ok, it seems that I have to setup a small mainboard with linuxcnc
12:25 PM travis_farmer[m4: i can't see a VM working well with real-time, and the network is funky, compared to a direct connection
12:25 PM roycroft: if one is using a smart motion control board a vm may be feasible
12:25 PM roycroft: but i would not recommend it
12:26 PM JT-Shop: VM is not going to work, you might setup a dual boot but remember you need a real time kernel for lcnc to work
12:26 PM Unterhausen: I hae the generic version of the stewmac guitar repair vise, and the bore for the back jaw is crooked
12:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Unterhausen: yeah it's frustrating with multiple indoor units sometimes, they keep the processing power to a minimum and often don't have an error code for conflicting settings between units. I'd recceomend not having them in automatic mode to heat or cool, this can put the system in a conflict.
12:26 PM Rab: Unterhausen, ahh, all of mine use the same remote. But it's IR, and operates in a rather strange way where it resends the complete configuration state on every button press. So if you use e.g. the living room remote to change the temp in the bedroom, that unit assumes all settings from the living room.
12:27 PM Unterhausen: I'm pretty sure they are all set to cool
12:27 PM Unterhausen: Check again
12:27 PM Rab: It is a joy to deal with when small children get ahold of the remotes and carry them through the house, wreaking carnage.
12:27 PM roycroft: unterhausen: is it perhaps supposed to be crooked?
12:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: half the questions are about regulations vs tech, so beware
12:29 PM Chris-D: JT-Shop - yeah, I know. I use a 5i525 and some parallel port solutions for years but this is my first ethernet card :-)
12:31 PM Unterhausen: roycroft, I don't think it's supposed to be crooked, the fixed jaw tilts back as a result
12:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Unterhausen: were all the indoor units installed at about the same time?
12:33 PM Unterhausen: my daughter had her unit set to 70 and off
12:33 PM Unterhausen: it's a new system
12:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I've also seen issues when they are the same brand but different model years
12:34 PM Unterhausen: I got 3 fancy units and 2 plain ones, the one that acts up is one of the plain ones
12:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: of course
12:35 PM Unterhausen: install workmanship wasn't great, I figure that explains the problem
12:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had some Midea units that had 240VAC that ran from the compressor to the indoor units blower motor, the 240VAC also carried the data from the indoor units to the compressor
12:39 PM Rab: I believe mine operates in the same way.
12:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the IR remotes were simplex to the indoor units, you'd make a setting on one unit and then when you went to another room with the same remote the indoor unit(new) in that room would be out of sync, so you'd have to set it two or three times for the new unit to be set at what you want
12:41 PM Rab: It could be worth checking the voltage at the indoor unit. If it's 120-0-120, a bad connection on one leg could result in partial but confused operation.
12:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no neutrals on most indoor units
12:44 PM Rab: Hmm, mine have neutral.
12:45 PM Rab: Or, at least, 14-3 used for something.
12:48 PM Unterhausen: repairman incoming. Probably shouldn't start disassembling the unit rn
12:48 PM Unterhausen: going to ask him if the outdoor unit should be level
12:48 PM Unterhausen: or maybe I should offer to let him use my Starrett 12" machinist level first
12:49 PM Unterhausen: I think about leveling it every time I'm on that side of the house
12:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's mostly about drainage
12:50 PM Unterhausen: RIP Peewee Herman
12:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oof
12:50 PM Rab: "The customer gave me a level to use, and then I dropped it, and then he freaked out on me, lol"
12:50 PM Unterhausen: yeah, I would take an eyeball level
12:51 PM Unterhausen: It might not be possible to get it level with the Starrett, too difficult to keep the bubble in the lines
12:53 PM Unterhausen: sort of embarrassing to overpay for a system and then they can't get the most obvious things right. I'm sure it's supposed to be level
12:55 PM Rab: Could it have settled?
12:56 PM Unterhausen: it settled very quickly
01:06 PM Unterhausen: but the dirt there was pretty compacted because I stole the topsoil for my garden
01:24 PM Unterhausen: I opened up the attic door for him and a batch of boxes rained down on me
01:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Home Alone - The Interhousen
01:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: heh Unter
02:12 PM Unterhausen: well, it had a switch that wasn't set correctly
02:13 PM Unterhausen: And they couldn't level it, so I'm going to
03:06 PM Unterhausen: they wanted to sell me a whole house surge protector. If they actually had electricians, their price wouldn't be too out of line
03:06 PM Unterhausen: but they don't have any electricians
03:06 PM Unterhausen: there is no such thing as a licensed electrician in Pennsylvania
03:07 PM Tom_L: no faith ehh
03:08 PM Unterhausen: I keep meaning to clean up their wiring from the install. If I had some inspected work it wouldn't pass because of what they did
03:09 PM Tom_L: inspectors don't check it?
03:09 PM Tom_L: i did alot of my own and it all passed
03:09 PM Unterhausen: they don't pull permits, none of the hvac companies around here do
03:09 PM Tom_L: yeah well, they're supposed to
03:10 PM Unterhausen: I know, but the inspectors around here are too busy with high rises nowadays
03:10 PM Tom_L: they just don't wanna pay for a licensed electrician to do it
03:10 PM Unterhausen: you can't get a license from pennsylvania
03:10 PM Unterhausen: is there a national license? I don't think so
03:10 PM Tom_L: no i think it's state by state
03:11 PM Tom_L: alot of them around here are licensed in several states
03:11 PM Tom_L: when it storms they can move around
03:11 PM Unterhausen: it's weird that pa is like that, it's a big deal elsewhere
03:11 PM JT-Shop: no nothing needed here
03:12 PM Tom_L: you're rural
03:12 PM JT-Shop: Arkansas has a state inspection and license for electrical work
03:12 PM JT-Shop: very
03:12 PM Tom_L: :)
03:13 PM Unterhausen: I'm a little surprised that none of our neighbors ratted us out
03:13 PM Tom_L: when i did my basement the HVAC inspector was a lady in a dress and high heels and asked me several questions about if it was ok to do it
03:14 PM Unterhausen: code enforcement might feel compelled to come out and look in that case
03:14 PM Tom_L: Unterhausen, no tellin what they're up to...
03:14 PM Unterhausen: I have heard they can be picky if you pull a permit
03:15 PM Unterhausen: I want to put a mr. cool in the basement
03:15 PM Tom_L: i still have _some_ knob & tube
03:15 PM Unterhausen: it's not bad unless it's been modified
03:16 PM Unterhausen: the knob and tube in my mom's house had been modified quite a bit
03:16 PM Unterhausen: I just looked the other way
03:16 PM Unterhausen: house sold with it, so not my problem
03:16 PM Tom_L: most has been updated to current standards all but the upstairs lights
03:17 PM Unterhausen: I think that's mostly what it was in that house, just in the attic
03:17 PM Tom_L: when i moved in the fuse box was those screw in type
03:17 PM Tom_L: light socket
03:18 PM Unterhausen: I wanted to replace it, but I had to cut my losses, wasted 2 years of weekends on that house
03:18 PM Unterhausen: driving 6 hours each way
03:19 PM Unterhausen: all because my mother didn't have a will
03:20 PM Tom_L: roycroft, add Pee-wee Herman to your list of not here anymore
03:23 PM Tom_L: wow, it's way past naptime
03:23 PM Unterhausen: now roycroft has me doubting my woodworking vise problems
03:25 PM DaViruz: solarwind: acetylene-oxygen. and eys it's pretty expensice, hence why i was trying with TIG
03:25 PM roycroft: pee wee has fallen off his last bike?
03:25 PM * roycroft wonders if he meant to do that
03:29 PM Unterhausen: I might need a translator https://youtu.be/vp2U3lqLHlo
03:29 PM roycroft: so i went to the allegedly most reputable trailer supply outfitter in town today at lunch
03:29 PM roycroft: they told me that the brake system on my trailer hasn't been made in decades, and that parts are unavailable for it
03:30 PM roycroft: i believed that, but then they told me that i would not be able to replace the hubs with modern hubs - that i would need an entire new axle
03:30 PM roycroft: and quoted me $1k for the axle alone, without hubs or suspension
03:30 PM roycroft: i can get an axle for my trailer for $250
03:30 PM roycroft: and i can get replacement hubs to fit it
03:31 PM roycroft: the axle i have
03:31 PM roycroft: so don't know what to think of the trailer supply place
03:46 PM * JT-Shop is trying to think of a clever way to make a cork board with glass doors
03:46 PM JT-Shop: they are just trying to get your money :)
03:56 PM Unterhausen: that kind of thing would really destroy my faith in a business
03:57 PM Unterhausen: I got some nonsense from the local welding supply along the same lines, but they also have been quite helpful
04:17 PM Unterhausen: mystery of the moment: where is the code reader for my daughter's car
04:18 PM roycroft: i have a decent code reader, but my pickup wants a ford-specific one, and my code reader only reads a handful of the ford codes
04:19 PM roycroft: it appears that ford have adopted the microsoft playbook, and taken standards and "improved" upon them in a proprietary manner
04:41 PM Unterhausen: just about all of them have proprietary codes. Usually available online
04:41 PM Unterhausen: that's why I have to find this particular code reader though, it has a volkswagon decoder
04:43 PM roycroft: i bought a code reader for my new beetle
04:43 PM roycroft: with the ford, it's not just the code numbers that's the problem
04:43 PM roycroft: entire subsystems cannot be read at all
04:44 PM JT-Shop: my neighbor has to use a special one for his vw
04:44 PM roycroft: with the one for my vw i could at least read all the codes, even though some were not documented
04:44 PM roycroft: i was able to find the undocumented ones online
04:45 PM roycroft: but when i plug my fancier newer one into the truck, it just fails when trying to read most things
04:45 PM Tom_L: i try to deal with companies that have been around at least as long as i have
04:46 PM Tom_L: it's getting to be a harder chore
04:47 PM Tom_L: instead of some snot nosed kid working the counter
04:47 PM roycroft: ford have been around even longer than i have :)
04:48 PM Tom_L: went to visit my local electric motor shop today
04:48 PM Tom_L: made the rest of the day fairly pleasant
04:49 PM roycroft: there's some free software that works with fords called forscan
04:49 PM roycroft: it requires an obd link cable and a laptop
04:49 PM roycroft: and only runs on windows, but that's ok
04:49 PM Tom_L: obd I i presume
04:49 PM roycroft: i should probably get that cable and download the software
04:49 PM Tom_L: OBDII is pretty common i think
04:49 PM roycroft: it says obdlink ex
04:49 PM roycroft: whatever that means
04:50 PM Tom_L: https://repairpal.com/obd-ii-code-chart
04:50 PM Unterhausen: there is all kinds of canbus messages that aren't obdII
04:50 PM roycroft: there's a paid version of the software that lets one set things, and do transmission tuning
04:50 PM Tom_L: i forget when but all cars in the us use II now
04:50 PM Unterhausen: need a canbus analyzer to read the codes
04:51 PM Tom_L: was standardized
04:51 PM roycroft: but the free version does most things, and one can get a free 2 month trial of the extended version
04:51 PM Unterhausen: they meet the standard and then go their own way
04:51 PM roycroft: there's an odb 2 cable that works with that software as well
04:51 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094Z7PBLS
04:52 PM Tom_L: https://forscan.org/home.html
04:52 PM roycroft: that one is pretty cheap
04:52 PM Tom_L: android version too
04:52 PM roycroft: i should just get it
04:52 PM roycroft: yes, and ios as well
04:52 PM * roycroft wonders what his amazon bill is so far this month
04:52 PM Tom_L: is Mazda imported by ford?
04:52 PM Tom_L: odd to toss that one in the mix
04:53 PM roycroft: oh, cool
04:53 PM roycroft: the bill is $0 - i just paid it
04:53 PM roycroft: that makes a $35 cable easy
04:53 PM Unterhaus_: I got the obdlink mx, but it wasn't $140 when I bought it https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JFRFJG6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
04:54 PM Unterhaus_: mystery deepens, scanner wasn't in the file cabinet
04:56 PM roycroft: my scanners are in the "diagnostic tools" drawer in my mechanic's tool cart
04:56 PM Unterhaus_: good idear
04:57 PM roycroft: i am the only person who ever touches my tools
04:57 PM roycroft: it's the only way i can keep track of them
04:57 PM roycroft: and even then i find things go missing sometimes
04:57 PM roycroft: that's due to my brain going missing sometimes, i'm sure
04:57 PM Unterhaus_: me too, sadly that means I am the one who loses them
04:58 PM roycroft: those apple air tags don't seem such a bad idea at times
04:58 PM roycroft: although i would go broke buying air tags for all my tools
05:00 PM skunkworks: my scanner is in my trunk.. But it only works for that car - and it requires the laptop that is currently at work..
05:02 PM Unterhaus_: I found the instructions for it, so close
05:02 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
05:03 PM roycroft: hopefully my mbp will work with that cable and software
05:03 PM roycroft: i'll run windows 10 in a vm
05:23 PM JT-Shop: didn't take too long to write the program for the double chucker plc
05:24 PM Unterhausen: weirdly, it turns out that I have a diagnostics tools drawer in my garage toolbox. Who knew?
05:24 PM Tom_L: you should have
05:24 PM Unterhausen: I was hoping someone else remembered
05:25 PM Unterhausen: last place I would have thought to look
05:25 PM Tom_L: realized a new switch wasn't gonna be quite enough on the lift pump once i pulled it out and realized it had been there for 30 yrs
05:26 PM Tom_L: the cast was pretty pitted and the handle to lift it was rusted to the case
05:26 PM roycroft: any device that's old enough to drink legally is usualy going to require more repair/maintenance than originally thought
05:26 PM Tom_L: i had spare parts but i was missing a seal
05:27 PM Unterhausen: app even is installed on my phone, crazy
05:27 PM Tom_L: i kept a set of the spares but did get a new pump from the motor guys today
05:27 PM Tom_L: they've gone up a bit since i got the first one
05:33 PM JT-Shop: pump for your basement?
05:33 PM Tom_L: yeah
05:34 PM Tom_L: decided to go out yesterday
05:34 PM Tom_L: intermitten so i kinda knew it was the switch but the housing was really too far gone even though the motor still ran
05:35 PM Tom_L: iirc this would have been the 3rd switch
05:35 PM Tom_L: the rubber boot around the switch arm starts leaking then shorts the switch
05:37 PM Tom_L: i just googled how long they last and it replied around 5 yrs :)
05:37 PM Tom_L: i think i just raised the bar a little
05:38 PM XXCoder: ugh server issues suck lol
05:40 PM JT-Shop: sounds like you got your money worth out out of it
05:40 PM XXCoder: lol
05:41 PM perry_j1987: flange on ballscrew nuts are hardened arent they?
05:42 PM Unterhausen: system too lean, intake manifold leak
05:49 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i probably could have fixed it once more but decided it was time
05:59 PM Unterhausen: I already bought the part that's probably causing the problem
05:59 PM Unterhausen: pcv valve
06:03 PM Unterhausen: in true volkswagon tradition, you have to buy the entire valve cover
06:04 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:23 PM Tom_L: mmm 104F for tomorrow
06:23 PM Tom_L: 101F today
06:24 PM Tom_L: 102
07:22 PM roycroft: you folks really need to get on with converting to si units
07:22 PM roycroft: it's only 29 here today, which is way btter than 101 or 102 or 104
07:23 PM XXCoder: ice
07:25 PM Unterhausen: I'm sticking with rankin
07:25 PM Unterhausen: rankine
07:25 PM XXCoder: ill go with absolute k
07:26 PM XXCoder: its just 298k here
07:51 PM roycroft: i think we should resurrect the newton scale
07:51 PM roycroft: on that scale, 0 is freezing, body temperature is 12, and water boils at 34
07:52 PM XXCoder: eh dunno the lower zero to boiling temp number is set to, the less gradient there is
08:53 PM Unterhausen: kelvin is okay if you don't like accuracy, but a rankine degree is more betterer
08:54 PM Unterhausen: oh, it's 298 out there, that's nothing, it's 536 here
09:01 PM Unterhausen: make sure your torque wrench is set to inch pounds and not foot pounds. Oops
09:21 PM Unterhausen: finally time to reset the codes and go for a test drive
09:31 PM roycroft: so i've taken on a new adventure
09:32 PM roycroft: i'm happy with most of my welding gear - gtaw, smaw, oaw, and aaw - but my gmaw welder is my oldest welding machine, and it's a small, 120vac unit that i bought about 25 years ago
09:33 PM roycroft: it's needed upgrading, and now that i'm doing this trailer work i decided it's time to get something more capable
09:33 PM roycroft: i ended up buying one from harbor freight
09:34 PM roycroft: even five years ago i'd never have considered getting one from there, but they're selling much better quality gear now
09:34 PM roycroft: the first one was defective, though - the jack on the chassis for the control cable had a mangled pin
09:34 PM roycroft: i just got a replacement, and it seems to be ok, although i've not welded anything with it yet
09:35 PM roycroft: i don't weld all that often, so getting a blue or red machine doesn't make sense for me
