04:32 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:39 AM Tom_itx: morning
04:52 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
04:52 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i'm wondering if any of the rpi bullseye os are 32 bit
04:52 AM Tom_L: they say they are on the site but you install and do uname and it shows 64
04:52 AM Tom_L: and i can't get buster to work because of that dependency
04:52 AM Tom_L: i tried ~4 different versions of buster that claimed to be 32bit but all returned arm64 or something similar
04:54 AM Tom_L: if you can remember how ssh works with github, i've seem to forgot...
04:54 AM Tom_L: i had some notes but something isn't working right
04:55 AM Tom_L: the 64bit on bookworm is installed and ready to push
04:56 AM JT-Cave: I don't see your fork of mesact maybe all the renaming forked something up
06:00 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
06:01 AM CloudEvil: :)
06:31 AM solarwind: https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/e6-series-1000w-ac-servo-motor-kit-3000rpm-3-18nm-17-bit-encoder-ip65-e6-rs1000h2a2-m17s
06:31 AM solarwind: These are now my go-to servos for like... everything
06:31 AM solarwind: I'm going to build a large format CNC router for plywood and such
06:32 AM solarwind: And the X and Y axis is getting these. 1kW is overkill, yes, but it also reduces the inertia ratio
06:35 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i renamed mine mesact1 and mesact on my git
06:39 AM JT-Cave: did it work?
06:39 AM JT-Cave: I renamed mesact 1.x.x to mesact1 and mesact2 to mesact
06:41 AM Tom_L: the links look ok
06:41 AM Tom_L: and that part works
06:41 AM Tom_L: i just can't connect git gui via ssh
06:41 AM Tom_L: keeps asking for a username & password insted of looking at the key
06:42 AM JT-Cave: might be a permissions issue with the key let me find my notes
06:42 AM Tom_L: i did the chmod stuff
06:42 AM Tom_L: and copied it from the main pc to the rpi
06:43 AM Tom_L: and the key is on the rpi and matches the key on github afik
06:43 AM JT-Cave: ls -adl1 .ssh
06:43 AM JT-Cave: ls -l1 .ssh
06:44 AM JT-Cave: what do they show
06:44 AM Tom_L: don't have those on atm
06:44 AM Tom_L: on the pi or pc?
06:44 AM JT-Cave: pi
06:46 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:46 AM Tom_dev: rw------- 1 tom tom 566 Jul 27 20:29 authorized_keys
06:47 AM JT-Cave: ls -l1 .ssh

06:47 AM JT-Cave: -rw------- 1 john john 364 Jul 20 06:06 known_hosts
06:49 AM JT-Cave: I'm cloning to the rpi now]
06:53 AM JT-Cave: running mesact on the pi it's 800x640 instead of the 800x600...
06:54 AM Tom_L: yeah i can install and run it
06:55 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:55 AM Tom_shop: also for some reason i'm not able to copy the .deb etc from the tom directory to the mesact2 one
06:55 AM Tom_shop: dunno what's up there
06:59 AM Tom_L: why do the debs build in the user directory instead of mesact?
06:59 AM Tom_L: each build i have to move them before running git gui
07:00 AM JT-Cave: because I was told to put /debian in the root directory of the repo
07:00 AM Tom_L: ok
07:01 AM Tom_L: no clue why i'm unable to move them
07:01 AM Tom_L: i checked permissions etc
07:02 AM JT-Cave: I always clone like this git clone git@github.com:jethornton/mesact.git github/mesact
07:03 AM JT-Cave: that way the debs go into the github directory
07:03 AM Tom_shop: i'll try that
07:04 AM Tom_shop: denies due to access rights
07:04 AM Tom_shop: the ssh is still broke
07:08 AM JT-Cave: are you sure you have the correct ssh key in your repo?
07:08 AM Tom_L: pretty sure
07:11 AM JT-Cave: afaik the only things that will keep you from doing git push is ssh permissions and the wrong key in the repo
07:11 AM Tom_L: ok now they look different
07:14 AM JT-Cave: lol I can't even find my ssh key in github
07:15 AM Tom_L: under the user settings
07:15 AM travis_farmer[m4: i just use GitKraken... in windoze. IIRC it doesn't connect right under Linux for some reason...
07:15 AM Tom_L: i added the key and still no go. it may take a few
07:15 AM rmu: Tom_L what do you mean with "i'm not able to copy..." -- are you unable because you don't know the command, can't type anything on that computer, the command (which one?) finishes without copying, or is there an error message?
07:16 AM Tom_L: rmu it's a permissions thing
07:16 AM Tom_L: not sure, i've never had that happen
07:16 AM travis_farmer[m4: sudo?
07:16 AM Tom_L: the files are user rights not root
07:16 AM travis_farmer[m4: Hmm...
07:18 AM travis_farmer[m4: sounds like the .ssh folder may have the wrong rights... possibly
07:18 AM rmu: i could probably help you but "it's a permissions thing" isn't helpful information
07:19 AM JT-Cave: I tried gitkraken but it's just too gaudy for me git gui is fast and clean
07:19 AM JT-Cave: in any case time to start my chicken day
07:21 AM Tom_L: yep
07:21 AM Tom_L: gotta go here too
07:22 AM Tom_L: added the key and it said 'ok' but it doesn't show it
07:29 AM Tom_L: i think i'll delete all the keys and start fresh
07:59 AM Loetmichel: *Snicker* Always funny when the "all business" comapny reps from the customer get riled up about the "Hippie" in the teams meeting... "Sorry, i am the head design engineer for that project. I dont have a dress code. Cope with it" (although i phrased it a bit more polite)... :D -> http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=18128&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
08:06 AM JT-Cave: but hippie's have long hair... I think
08:06 AM Loetmichel: I do have long hair
08:06 AM Loetmichel: about to the shoulder blades atm
08:06 AM Loetmichel: but in a pony tail
08:07 AM Loetmichel: so its not visible in the pic
08:08 AM Loetmichel: the customers (all in suit and necktie) were making good natured fun about my shirt.
08:09 AM Loetmichel: so i shot back. Similarily good natured though
08:14 AM Loetmichel: The shirt says "Careful you must be, one dark side the sausage already has!" btw. :)
08:19 AM JT-Cave: lol a play on star wars... I get it now
08:38 AM Loetmichel: Wurst-> sausage
08:39 AM JT-Shop_: yep I knew that
08:39 AM JT-Shop_ is now known as JT-Shop
08:42 AM JT-Shop: I also know not to order a pepperoni pizza in the Frankfort airport if you want meat on it
08:46 AM Loetmichel: yeah, you'll get something overflowing with jalapenos. ;)
08:47 AM JT-Shop: yup, but finger pointing will span all language barriers
08:59 AM randy: Loetmichel: my customers always get the "native"/"legacy" look ;) and of course they use my nickname.
09:01 AM randy: and they love btw my sheldon cooper shirts. like "knock knock knock penny!..." or "bazinga"
09:05 AM Loetmichel: randy: well, my boss wasnt amused about that one: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=16369&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
09:05 AM Loetmichel: "Criticism acknowledged. Ignore engine started."
09:06 AM randy: hehehe
09:07 AM randy: well, the only thing i would criticize: no esd safe foot wear :p
09:07 AM Loetmichel: true
09:07 AM randy: but hey ... ignore engine started :p
09:08 AM Loetmichel: indeed :)
09:08 AM randy: "hoch die haenge, wochenende!".
09:08 AM randy: scnr.
09:08 AM Loetmichel: Ignore process started would probably have been the better translation
09:09 AM randy: part/part... its like a state machine ;)
09:09 AM Loetmichel: [16:07] <randy> "hoch die haenge, wochenende!". "Hände" ... that said: still 2 hours to go ;)
09:10 AM randy: tsts. streber.
10:35 AM JT-Shop: nap time
10:44 AM Tom_L: wow already?
11:27 AM Tom_L: maybe i have the keys working now
11:31 AM Tom_L: ok JT-Shop, JT-Cave see if PR #5 is ok
11:31 AM Tom_L: then find me a 32bit bullseye iso :)
11:34 AM roycroft: just take a 64 bit iso and cut it in half
11:34 AM Tom_L: then it would just hobble along on one foot
11:35 AM Tom_L: buster won't work
11:35 AM Tom_L: the python3-pyqt5 package isn't up to date enough
11:35 AM JT-Shop: odd I have 32 bit down in the cave and it works fine
11:35 AM JT-Shop: let me see if I can find it
11:36 AM Tom_L: well where the heck did you find it? i tried 4 yesterday
11:36 AM JT-Shop: it's been on the Rpi for a while now
11:37 AM Tom_L: ok at least rpi bookworm is working now
11:37 AM Tom_L: you should update the build date :)
11:38 AM JT-Shop: yup
11:38 AM JT-Shop: none of the raspbian show if they are 32 or 64 bit in the name :(
11:38 AM JT-Shop: I have some spare micro sd cards I'll test with in the morning
11:39 AM Tom_L: when i ssh the keys over to the rpi it put them in another filename and git really didn't like that
11:39 AM JT-Shop: I'll go look in the cave to see if the 32 bit os is on that pc
11:39 AM Tom_L: so i tennishoe net them over instead
11:39 AM JT-Shop: weird
11:39 AM Tom_L: then chmod the files/directory
11:40 AM JT-Shop: it put them in a different directory?
11:40 AM Tom_L: no but it put them in a different filename
11:40 AM Tom_L: so i just copied them over instead
11:40 AM Tom_L: started off with a fresh key on the main pc and went from there
11:41 AM JT-Shop: ssh-copy-id john@192.168.1.66
11:41 AM Tom_L: tried that
11:41 AM JT-Shop: did you do that from the pc
11:41 AM Tom_L: uh huh
11:41 AM JT-Shop: except your name and ip
11:41 AM Tom_L: oh... damn
11:41 AM Tom_L: :)
11:41 AM JT-Shop: weird
11:41 AM Tom_L: yeah it worked like that before
11:42 AM Tom_L: i kept notes from last time
11:42 AM Tom_L: i'm gonna upload the amd64 one just to see if it works ok
11:46 AM Tom_L: #6 is the amd64 deb
11:46 AM Tom_L: and that works ok now
11:50 AM JT-Shop: merged
11:50 AM Tom_L: i normally won't push that one
11:52 AM Tom_L: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/
11:52 AM Tom_L: the first 2 there say 32 but they're not
11:53 AM JT-Cave: just looked down here and I don't have any rpi os downloaded here
11:53 AM JT-Cave: fixing to head out in a bit
11:53 AM Tom_L: ok
11:54 AM Tom_L: either that or find an update for python3-pyqt5 for buster
11:54 AM JT-Cave: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/#raspberry-pi-os-32-bit
11:54 AM JT-Cave: you tried those?
11:55 AM Tom_L: that looks like the same page i linked
11:55 AM Tom_L: different addy
11:55 AM JT-Cave: I have 11.7 on my rpi whatever the silly name is for that
11:55 AM Tom_L: bullseye
11:55 AM Tom_L: bookworm is 12
11:56 AM Tom_L: both pages show the same kernel etc
11:57 AM JT-Cave: ok so buster is 10
11:58 AM JT-Cave: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/#raspberry-pi-os-legacy
11:58 AM JT-Cave: I'll try buster in the am
11:58 AM Tom_L: yes
11:58 AM Tom_L: best of luck
11:58 AM Tom_L: :)
11:58 AM JT-Cave: I have a collection of micro sd cards now lol
11:59 AM Tom_L: it will get to the end build the deb and crash when you try to install the deb
11:59 AM JT-Cave: anyhow fixing to head out for the afternoon and not sitting outside
11:59 AM Tom_L: have fun
11:59 AM JT-Cave: mesact deb?
12:00 PM Tom_L: yes
12:00 PM Tom_L: don't put too much effort in installing everything until you get that far
12:00 PM JT-Cave: ok, maybe move up to 11?
12:00 PM Tom_L: 11 would be great if you could find a 32bit version
12:01 PM Tom_L: seems buster (10) was the cutoff for it
12:01 PM JT-Cave: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/#raspberry-pi-os-32-bit
12:01 PM JT-Cave: those claim to be 32 bit
12:01 PM JT-Cave: bye
12:01 PM Tom_L: claim but try uname
12:01 PM Tom_L: see what you get
12:01 PM Tom_L: won't be arm7
12:04 PM Tom_L: i found an older one i had i'm gonna try
12:51 PM kenny-gun[m] is now known as kennygun0[m]
01:14 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
02:14 PM JT[m]: Did it work
02:33 PM Tom_L: gonna try it here in a bit
02:38 PM JT[m]: Ok
02:39 PM Tom_L: yay
02:39 PM Tom_L: this one is arm7
02:39 PM Tom_L: gonna do the updates and installs stuff now
02:41 PM JT[m]: Ok
02:41 PM Tom_L: i could post it if you want a copy
02:41 PM JT[m]: That an image you had?
02:41 PM Tom_L: yes
02:42 PM Tom_L: unless you already have one
02:43 PM JT[m]: I have 11.7 IIRC
02:48 PM Tom_L: you get your spoiler mounted?
03:02 PM JT[m]: Still gathering parts and info
03:06 PM Tom_L: how do you show the os version number?
03:06 PM Rab: lsb_release -a
03:07 PM Tom_L: cool
03:07 PM Tom_L: i think we have a winner here
03:07 PM Rab: -d is more concise.
03:07 PM Tom_L: close enough
03:08 PM JT[m]: /etc/debian_version
03:09 PM Tom_L: 11.4
03:10 PM Tom_L: arm7l
03:10 PM Tom_L: you should make a note that your tool won't run on buster
03:14 PM JT[m]: Ok I need to check that out
03:14 PM JT[m]: Buster is ??
03:16 PM roycroft: old
03:16 PM roycroft: debian 10, to be more precise
03:23 PM Tom_L: yup
03:25 PM Tom_L: JT[m], is your page for all that git stuff on the menu on your site?
03:25 PM Tom_L: i failed to note all that stuff
03:25 PM Tom_L: and that installer...
03:25 PM Tom_L: gdebi.. that's it
03:26 PM Tom_L: oh, debhelper
03:35 PM roycroft: gdebi sounds like something quagmire would say
03:35 PM Tom_L: gee debbie
03:36 PM Tom_L: ok now where was i
03:36 PM Tom_L: multi tasking here
03:42 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:56 PM Tom_L: ok JT[m] PR #7 is awaiting yer expertice
03:56 PM Tom_L: built on arm7 tested and pushed
03:58 PM Tom_L: memory test: figure out how to do it but don't write it down for next time
04:03 PM perry_j1987: i wish i had a friend with better cam software than I
04:03 PM perry_j1987: lol
04:03 PM perry_j1987: i'd swing over with a 6 pack of beer right about now
04:07 PM Tom_L: for what?
04:07 PM perry_j1987: im trying to make some gcode for a compression screw
04:07 PM perry_j1987: feed screw
04:07 PM Tom_L: threads?
04:07 PM perry_j1987: ya
04:08 PM Tom_L: why?
04:08 PM perry_j1987: with a taper down to a different stage etc
04:08 PM Tom_L: you said mill... that sounds like a lathe part
04:08 PM perry_j1987: it ends at a fixed point
04:09 PM Tom_L: got an img?
04:09 PM Tom_L: png jpeg jpg....
04:09 PM Tom_L: i doubt i could do it but i'm curious
04:09 PM Tom_L: well i probably could..
04:10 PM perry_j1987: https://ibb.co/mJ0m57J
04:10 PM perry_j1987: the best i can think to do now I can do a wraped tool path around the biggest step of the screw and get the full thread profile
04:11 PM Tom_L: wtf
04:11 PM perry_j1987: then i could work on a python script to post process the gcode to adjust the z for that tapered part down to the lower cylinder
04:11 PM Tom_L: that looks like an extruder part for a glue gun
04:11 PM perry_j1987: im making a small injection molding machine
04:11 PM perry_j1987: out of spare parts
04:11 PM Tom_L: that's what i was getting at
04:12 PM Tom_L: you know you can do a spiral with a taper
04:12 PM Tom_L: helix
04:12 PM perry_j1987: what do you mean
04:12 PM Tom_L: not sure how that would do on an A axis
04:12 PM Tom_L: oh i'm just thinking out loud as usual
04:13 PM Tom_L: what diameter is the bar?
04:13 PM perry_j1987: 5/8
04:13 PM Tom_L: still think that's a good lathe part
04:14 PM perry_j1987: i could modify the end so it just fades out instead of hard stop
04:14 PM Tom_L: it would probably have to
04:18 PM Tom_L: did you wrap that as a profile?
04:19 PM Tom_L: hmm
04:20 PM perry_j1987: cant wrap on cone just cylinders
04:20 PM perry_j1987: im not sure how to setup gcode to try this on the lathe yet either
04:21 PM Tom_L: treat it as a tapered thread on a lathe
04:22 PM Tom_L: i dunno, there are a few ways to get there
04:23 PM Tom_L: your initial idea about the A axis might be the simplest
04:24 PM Tom_L: synchronous motion with A & X
04:24 PM perry_j1987: then i could use a ball mill and such
04:24 PM Tom_L: your taper wouldn't be perfectly flat though due to the tool itself
04:24 PM Tom_L: more of a step
04:24 PM Tom_L: but for that it may not matter
04:25 PM Tom_L: i'd start with a flat endmill to get it close
04:25 PM perry_j1987: that would probably only help it "mix" the plastic better
04:25 PM Tom_L: or a bull nose
04:25 PM perry_j1987: aye
04:25 PM Tom_L: how wide is the thread?
04:25 PM perry_j1987: about 4mm
04:25 PM Tom_L: .125ish
04:26 PM perry_j1987: think it'd fit .14in
04:27 PM Tom_L: stainless?
04:27 PM perry_j1987: ya
04:27 PM Tom_L: figures
04:28 PM Tom_L: is there a taper then a flat bar where the part line is in the middle?
04:28 PM Tom_L: as well as the big end
04:29 PM Tom_L: 2 flat bars with a taper between
04:29 PM perry_j1987: ya
04:29 PM teophanea[m] is now known as teophanea0[m]
04:29 PM Tom_L: that's what i see anyway
04:29 PM perry_j1987: ive had my eye on this too https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832797229026.html
04:29 PM Tom_L: is your time worth that?
04:30 PM perry_j1987: part of this was a puzzle to see if i could figure out the cam heh
04:30 PM perry_j1987: no idea what the dimensions of that thing really is either
04:31 PM Tom_L: true
04:32 PM perry_j1987: i'd be fine with a straight taper from end to end too
04:35 PM Tom_L: my cad will do a wrapped rotary but it's kinda clunky
04:38 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvDBfJQT2Ec
04:39 PM Tom_L: skip to 2 min or you'll be bored. i was just setting up the rotary and wasn't tuned right
04:39 PM Tom_L: you want something similar to that
04:40 PM Tom_L: that was just some random test
04:40 PM Tom_L: it pauses at each quadrant for some reason
04:42 PM perry_j1987: i wonder why that is
04:42 PM Tom_L: the reason the first part is slow is it was ipm i think instead of degrees or some such thing that i had off a bit
04:43 PM Tom_L: no idea
04:44 PM Rab: perry_j1987, I wonder if this assembly wouldn't be easier to manufacture if you tapered the bore rather than the screw.
04:45 PM Rab: Make a straight screw, make a matching tap, and tap a tapered bore.
04:46 PM perry_j1987: this rabbit hole is looking off limits unless i pay for some high priced fancy cams lol
04:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/Rotary_test.txt
04:47 PM Tom_L: i think that's the file in the yt
04:47 PM Tom_L: fwiw
04:50 PM Tom_L: i dunno if my cad cam would wrap that screw it's pretty old stuff
04:51 PM Tom_L: it would certainly be a bit tricky
04:53 PM perry_j1987: think i found a solution
04:54 PM perry_j1987: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804356402331.html
04:54 PM perry_j1987: 25 bucks
04:55 PM Tom_L: is it long enough?
04:56 PM perry_j1987: pretty similar
04:56 PM perry_j1987: this entire machine is about 12in long 300mm heh
04:56 PM perry_j1987: just a little toy injection mold machine to play/learn with
04:57 PM Tom_L: i wish i could still get to kenneth maxon's site. he build an injection molding machine
04:57 PM Tom_L: maybe in archives...
04:57 PM Tom_L: pretty interesting stuff
05:00 PM roycroft: there was a small injection molding machine on cl here recently
05:01 PM roycroft: i was slightly tempted to get it, but i decided i had enough going on already without taking on a new project right now
05:05 PM perry_j1987: maybe i'll just make a piston style one heh
05:07 PM Tom_L: maybe simpler
05:08 PM roycroft: https://eugene.craigslist.org/tls/7630025654.html
05:09 PM roycroft: it's cheap enougn
05:09 PM roycroft: enough
05:09 PM roycroft: i don't have any way to make molds at this point
05:09 PM roycroft: nor do i need anything that's injection molded at the moment

05:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 3d print the molds
05:11 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold11.jpg
05:12 PM Tom_L: alum pour
05:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: for small parts that machine is way faster than CNC glue gun
05:13 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/Mold_Rev2/P1_2.jpg
05:13 PM Tom_L: rev2
05:14 PM Tom_L: he made a bunch of parts from those
05:26 PM XXCoder: yeah theres few youtube channels that use 3d printed mold, or use postive mold for sand casting
05:27 PM Tom_L: just need enough parts to offset the mold cost
05:28 PM Tom_L: roycroft, i bet that guy works in aircraft
05:28 PM Tom_L: that box of pellets was an aircraft extruded part
05:37 PM * zincboy_ca_on[m] uploaded an image: (857KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/gVxNCQJsKuOYvQwVmliBZIKI/IMG_1738.jpg >
05:37 PM zincboy_ca_on[m]: Decided to rebuild the spindle on my mill. The bearings have been making noise for a while and I checked the drawbar tension and it was only 500lbs! When I pulled the disc spring stack I found this:
05:38 PM Tom_L: jeebus
05:38 PM skunkworks8841[m: Those belvel washers I think failed.
05:38 PM skunkworks8841[m: 😉
05:38 PM zincboy_ca_on[m]: 30 out of 120 of the springs were shattered. I guess I should have expected that given the machine is 35 years old 🙂
05:39 PM Tom_L: can you still get them?
05:39 PM zincboy_ca_on[m]: Yes, they are a standard 35.5mm OD, 18.3mm ID, 2mm thick. Ordered a new set from McMaster and they should be here Tuesday.
05:41 PM Tom_L: any of that make it thru the bearings?
05:42 PM zincboy_ca_on[m]: No, the drawbar spring stack is inside the spindle. Nothing can get out luckily. I should have bought the drawbar force gauge ages ago.
06:28 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, still here?
06:30 PM _unreal_: does anyone have experience in designing blowers?
06:30 PM _unreal_: fans?
06:30 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, i did a wrapped rotary test to see if it was possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDjm1SZRlUQ
06:30 PM Tom_L: i don't think the final code would reset each rotation
06:31 PM _unreal_: I'm trying to design a blower to replace the original. 3d printing. I'm just trying to design something that produces the highest flow and static presure possible. with a lower RPM motor
07:06 PM Tom_L: i should set that up and see what it does
07:09 PM big_kevin420[m]: I bought some of the 8mm years ago on banggood, it was a very daunting task to make one, this is 100% easiere
07:15 PM big_kevin420[m]: probably dont get the 8mm one though. most pellets appear to be larger than the flights on the feed portion of the screw
08:10 PM perry_j1987: Tom_L wrapped cylinder not on a cone though?
08:43 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, my first attempt :)
08:44 PM Tom_L: i think with my cad it would be alot more difficult because of the way you define the path
08:44 PM Tom_L: mind you that cad cam is ~35+ yrs old
08:45 PM Tom_L: 1996 ... 27 to be precise
08:45 PM Tom_L: i have a dos version of it as well so that dates back even further
08:48 PM roycroft: are you talking about a particular application?
08:48 PM roycroft: because cam goes back to the 1940s
08:49 PM roycroft: and work on a cad/cam package started in the late '50s/early '60s
08:56 PM Tom_L: yes, the one i own
08:57 PM Tom_L: nowdays everybody want's 5 or more axis
08:57 PM roycroft: 2-1/2 is plenty for me at the moment
08:59 PM Tom_L: i'd never tried the A axis part of it but i was under the assumption that it was just an indexer so i was pleasantly surprised when i was able to do a rotary wrap with it
08:59 PM Tom_L: the original documentation i had with it indicated indexer only
09:03 PM perry_j1987: freeCAD needs to get their cam going full swing haha
09:05 PM Tom_L: that's only about the 2nd time i've messed with the rotary stuff
09:05 PM Tom_L: i'd have to play with it some more
09:05 PM Tom_L: same way with the lathe package.. used it maybe twice
09:28 PM roycroft: debian 12 is really kicking my arse
09:28 PM roycroft: and it's a bad time for that
09:28 PM Tom_L: why?
09:29 PM roycroft: my backup software broke
09:29 PM roycroft: and it took me a long time to come up with a work-around
09:29 PM roycroft: now my mariadb backup script is broken
09:29 PM roycroft: and i haven't found an acceptable work-around yet
09:29 PM roycroft: i can't push it into production if i don't have reliable, robust, automated backups
09:30 PM roycroft: and since most of what we do is database-driven, i can't just do system backups of the databases - i need to do proper database backps, with locking tables
09:30 PM roycroft: backing up the raw files on a live system guarantees corrupt backups - i know that all too well
09:32 PM roycroft: i got all this sorted years ago, when we first started switching to debian, and it's worked flawlessly for all those years until debain 12 came out
09:32 PM * roycroft may go back and reinstall the new vps with debian 11 while he continues to sort out the debian 12 issues
10:07 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, wrapping a cone isn't possible with my cad
10:07 PM Tom_L: not enough rotary axis support
10:08 PM perry_j1987: ya the big bucks for that kind of math apparently
10:08 PM Tom_L: it's just too old
10:08 PM perry_j1987: well even modern fusion 360 it's a 1600 dollar a year extension to do that kind of cam heh
10:08 PM Tom_L: the newer versions support it but i'm not about to upgrade
10:09 PM perry_j1987: i played with chatGPT 4 a bit and it look like i can make a python script that will take the gcode that i AM able to output from fusion 360 for the basic screw pitch and apply a gradual step of z moves along its length
10:10 PM perry_j1987: but i did also find a compression screw on aliexpress for 25 bucks too heh
10:13 PM Tom_L: looks like the new version doesn't even support it that well
10:20 PM perry_j1987: fusion 360 does not turn tapered threads either in my cursory glance for the lathe side
10:20 PM Tom_L: i'd have to play with my lathe package to see
10:21 PM Tom_L: it's just a basic lathe package
10:29 PM perry_j1987: have you played with chatGPT yet
10:29 PM Tom_L: no
10:29 PM perry_j1987: its pretty cool for this kind of stuff
10:29 PM perry_j1987: it knows everything about linuxCNC
10:29 PM perry_j1987: had it write me some subroutines for probing few weeks ago that i've been using heh
10:30 PM Tom_L: this will do a tapered thread it appears
10:31 PM Tom_L: asks for a taper angle
10:51 PM XXCoder: oh newe tom video. rare.
10:53 PM Tom_L: nothing major
10:54 PM XXCoder: yeah. still rare tho lol
10:59 PM perry_j1987: tom's going to start trying to up the competition for this old tony
11:24 PM Lcvette[m]: pcw--home: does the 7i76e have a high speed opto input that can catch the z pulse from a dedicated drive output for the index?
11:24 PM * Lcvette[m] uploaded an image: (424KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/GXwxcRSAbTnqbhdVYlkSRNEd/image.png >
11:25 PM Lcvette[m]: this has the OCZ output option and im trying to determine if it is something i can use a gpio or if they need to be something special to catch the narrow pulse, or possible use another option?
11:40 PM pcw--home: You could just use the normal differential (OZ+,OZ-) signals
11:47 PM mrec: https://snipboard.io/LRhadJ.jpg DIY PNP 0402 :-)
11:47 PM mrec: I'm still calibrating on the go, it's using my own software.
