#linuxcnc Calendar

12:29 AM XXCoder: interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx7F7bj8YII
12:41 AM XXCoder: basic pid setup with solar to keep room vented when hot
01:19 AM Deejay: moin
03:41 AM travis_farmer[m4: Morning ☕️
04:29 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:36 AM Tom_L: morning
06:24 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:25 AM JT-Cave: the deer are in the driveway eating breakfast... she better hurry
08:59 AM travis_farmer[m4: there, $28 worth of trash taken to the landfill, and i am exhausted... and still have to go to a family gathering a little before noon (deep fried turkey)
09:52 AM roycroft: i'm heading off in a bit to move an rv that isn't running for a friend
09:53 AM roycroft: it will be the first real work i'll do with my hitch-mounted winch
10:07 AM roycroft: there's a human-caused wildfire near the country fair site
10:10 AM roycroft: it's 15% contained already (it started last night), and it's far enough away that i don't think our land is in danger
10:16 AM Deejay: re
11:48 AM mrec: https://streamable.com/0n5e5h I like that camera quality even my commercial one wasn't close to that
11:48 AM mrec: my commercial pnp machine*
12:23 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (322KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/XPoClQQVHSdaMQLhASUiImJP/20230722_122222.jpg >
12:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: do you ever get any robot caused wildfires near you or puffs of smoke caused by EV's?
01:22 PM Tom_L: JT[m], new kid on the block :)
01:44 PM srk_ is now known as srk
01:45 PM roycroft: to my knowledge, no
01:45 PM roycroft: a lot of our fires are caused by lightning, though
01:45 PM roycroft: especially in central oregon
01:46 PM roycroft: but most of our fires are caused by poorly-tended campfires or cigarette butts
01:46 PM roycroft: debian 12.1 has just been released
01:46 PM roycroft: so it's time to start upgrading to debian 12
01:46 PM * roycroft avoids x.0 releases whenever possible
02:12 PM Tom_L: how do you tell if it's 12 or 12.1?
02:12 PM Tom_L: i've been running bookworm for a while now
02:13 PM roycroft: cat /etc/debian_version
02:14 PM roycroft: so i moved the rv this morning
02:14 PM roycroft: my winch setup worked perfectly
02:14 PM roycroft: i figured it would, but this was my first heavy move with it
02:32 PM Tom_L: 12.1
03:06 PM XXCoder: gonna love autocaptions
03:06 PM XXCoder: blondihack is now bloody hacks
03:06 PM XXCoder: its usually fine but it wasnt this time
03:36 PM travis_farmer[m4: back from my family gathering... ate plenty of fried turkey, and a massive burger.
03:38 PM JT[m]: Tom_L from an upgrade?
03:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: anyone else see the looooooong Oppenheimer movie? It certainly kills and afternoon or evening.
03:50 PM roycroft: i've not seen it yet, but i'd like to
03:51 PM roycroft: if it's really long, i'll pick a day when the temperature is in the upper 37s and go spend a few refreshing hours sitting in the cinema
03:51 PM roycroft: upper 30s, rather
03:52 PM roycroft: i'm going to go test and figure out the wiring for my new pickup mirrors now, and then decide whether it's too hot to install them or not
03:52 PM * roycroft suspects it may well be too hot for that
03:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they do a good job of showing how poorly he was treated after the ware was over
03:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ware/war
03:53 PM roycroft: i have to pull some wires for them - they are heated, and have running lights and indicator lights, which my current mirrors do not
03:53 PM XXCoder: hey as long as metal dont anneal themselves in room temperate ;)
03:54 PM roycroft: well he was useful during the war
03:54 PM roycroft: but then he was just a german jew
03:54 PM roycroft: and a mccarthy target
03:55 PM roycroft: he was never a communist, but he did not denounce communists, at least not sufficiently enough for mccarthy
03:55 PM roycroft: anyway
03:55 PM XXCoder: the red fear era
03:56 PM roycroft: given the choice between the oppenheimer film and the barbie film, i'd pick the former
04:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://imgur.com/t/barbie/qEieWCU
04:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: both were first dropped on Japan
04:08 PM Loetmichel: same here, roycroft.
04:37 PM Tom_L: JT[m], yes
04:40 PM roycroft: i need an illuminated 12v switch for my pickup, and the place where i used to get such things locally went out of business
04:40 PM roycroft: which of the national auto parts chains will have the best quality?
04:41 PM roycroft: i tend to avoid those places whenever possible, but i am thinking napa might be best, and autozone second best
04:41 PM roycroft: with oreilly and the like being the kmarts of auto parts
04:42 PM Tom_L: probably napa
04:43 PM Tom_L: maybe O'Reily 2nd
04:43 PM roycroft: i usually get things like this from mouser, when i have the time to wait
04:43 PM Tom_L: either may not have what you're after though
04:43 PM Loetmichel: [23:39] <roycroft> which of the national auto parts chains will have the best quality? <- probably the advertisements. :)
04:44 PM roycroft: an rv outfitter might have a better variety of switches
04:44 PM roycroft: i decided it's not too hot to install the mirrors
04:45 PM roycroft: but i may change my mind mid-job
04:45 PM roycroft: for now, i need to go on a parts run
04:48 PM solarwind: I just made water cooled vise jaws out of aluminum for welding
04:48 PM solarwind: _super_ happy with it
04:49 PM solarwind: holds smaller parts for welding so the part doesn't get hot, also makes for a cool surface to rest my hand on
04:50 PM solarwind: worse for the part in terms of stresses and warping of course, but makes for much less oxide formation. Very good for TIG brazing where you don't want the rest of the part ahead of you to oxidize as it heats up
04:52 PM solarwind: really good for thin wall cast aluminum parts that would otherwise cave in while welding unless you packed them with sand or something
07:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: cool
08:06 PM solarwind: Why do hex cap screws have those vertical ridges cut into them? https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61QiPa9GDLL._AC_SX679_.jpg
08:07 PM solarwind: Is that intended to be knurling for better hand grip?
09:09 PM roycroft: yes, so you can hand tighten them before using the hex key
09:10 PM roycroft: i got my mirrors installed, but while i bench tested all the features, i did not wire up the extra features today - i could not find all the parts i needed to do that properly
09:10 PM roycroft: and i don't have to remove the mirrors to finish the wiring
09:11 PM roycroft: i went on a drive to see how they performed, especially checking to see if they vibrated at freeway spees
09:11 PM roycroft: speeds
09:11 PM roycroft: and they do not
09:11 PM roycroft: and i discovered an undocumented feature - there is ZERO blind spot to the sides of the vehicle
09:11 PM roycroft: not only are the main mirrors huge, the fisheye mirrors are also huge
09:12 PM roycroft: i didn't even telescope them out like i would with a trailer, and my field of view is way better than with the stock mirrors
09:12 PM roycroft: i should have done this on day one when i bought the pickup
09:22 PM XXCoder: already done with trailer mods, in least the framework and wheels?
09:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I say screw the French and start pronouncing all the silent K's, nurling will be become Kuh-nurling
09:37 PM roycroft: no, not at all, xxcoder
09:38 PM roycroft: i need to get the new tires mounted and put back on the trailer so i can measure for the fenders before i can do anything else
09:38 PM roycroft: and that's going to take a couple weeks
09:38 PM roycroft: i don't expect the trailer to be done until next spring
09:38 PM XXCoder: oh what was you testing?
09:38 PM roycroft: the new mirrors for my pickup
09:38 PM XXCoder: ahh
09:39 PM roycroft: they're power adjust like the old ones, but they are also heated, and have running lights and indicator lights
09:39 PM roycroft: and no wiring diagram, so i had to figure out which wire did what
09:41 PM XXCoder: thats fancy :) and hopefully not hacked
10:03 PM roycroft: the heaters are my main interest, so they'll work in the winter
10:03 PM roycroft: but the indicator and running lights are nice - they give greater visibility
10:04 PM roycroft: and i'm all about giving people fewer excuses to crash into me
10:12 PM XXCoder: good idea
