12:51 AM Deejay: moin
02:12 AM travis_farmer[m4: Morning ☕️
02:41 AM * solarwind replaces all of Deejay and travis_farmer[m4 and CaptHindsight[m] 's machining metal stock with mangalloy
02:52 AM DaveMecha[m] is now known as dave_mecha0[m]
02:52 AM * travis_farmer[m4 has no machining metal stock, as his machine is a woodworking machine ;-)

05:46 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
08:58 AM travis_farmer[m4: 80F @ 83%rh... doesn't mother nature know i have stuff to do in my shop, and i can't handle muggy weather? one of these days i will be able to afford a portable A/C for in the shop. and just to be clear, the 80F is outside temp, and is much hotter inside the shop from the very little insulation, if any in some places.

10:06 AM * JT-Shop heads to Patti's 1880
11:36 AM solarwind: travis_farmer[m4 I'm just starting to modify my portable ACs for water cooling. The single hose units are completely useless, they will not cool any given room because of the negative pressure they create.
11:36 AM solarwind: You either have to convert them into a dual hose unit, or a heavier modification: water cool the condenser
11:37 AM solarwind: I have 9 of them in my workshop, but only use one like CaptHindsight[m] does and have it follow me around, just blowing cold air at me
11:37 AM solarwind: travis_farmer[m4 if there is anyone else in the area, they will hate you because it'll make it much hotter for them, especially if they're in the path of the exhaust
11:44 AM jpa-: if they are not in the path of exhaust, it's not likely that a portable AC with maybe 1kW thermal power makes any difference in outside temperatures
11:54 AM solarwind: Oh believe me, it does
11:54 AM solarwind: I have a 3,300 sq·ft industrial unit and if you put it in the middle of the space, the exhaust side of the room is slightly warmer than the other side
11:55 AM solarwind: not a lot, but it definitely is
11:55 AM solarwind: jpa- also, 1kW "compressor power" is roughly "1 ton" of cooling power. The rule of thumb is thermal power is ~3-4x the compressor power
11:56 AM jpa-: ah, so not exhausting outside but just out the room :)
11:56 AM solarwind: yeah
11:56 AM jpa-: yeah, i can see it making a big difference in an enclosed space
11:56 AM solarwind: but even if you have these shitty single hose AC exhausting outside, they NEVER cool the room
11:56 AM solarwind: the negative pressure pulls in outside air
11:56 AM jpa-: yeah, i agree they need the mod
11:57 AM solarwind: They don't include the bracket and mount for the second hose, I don't know why
11:57 AM solarwind: there's clearly enough space for it so you have to end up using hot glue and cardboard to make your own second hose mount
11:57 AM solarwind: But since our tap water right now is very cold and the prices are $0.04/1000L, I'm going to go the water cooling route and forget the hoses altogether
11:58 AM solarwind: There are in fact portable ACs intentionally designed to operate like this - just draw in cold water from the faucet and spit it out into the drain with no recirculation
11:59 AM solarwind: But I already have 9 of these portable units and they're 1.5kW compressor power rated, so time for a water cooling mod
12:30 PM solarwind: On another note, I'm very tempted to build continuous pressure lubrication for my bridgeport mill
12:30 PM solarwind: Now that it's converted to hybrid manual/CNC
12:32 PM solarwind: I should be able to continuously pump way oil, filter it through multiple progressively finer filter stages designed for hydraulic variable piston pumps
12:33 PM solarwind: That should keep a really nice high pressure film of oil between all the sliding parts
12:37 PM travis_farmer[m4: Hmmm, just caught the conversation about portable A/Cs. good info, so i will have to figure out how to make a window unit work...
12:43 PM solarwind: travis_farmer[m4 well what's there to figure out? Just stick it in a hole in the wall and plug it in. They're extremely efficient and very effective.
12:45 PM travis_farmer[m4: it isn't as easy as you think, current shop is a camper with 1" thick walls, and aluminum siding. it would be a major retrofit to build a section of wall so it could support an A/C
12:45 PM solarwind: shop is a _camper_?
12:46 PM solarwind: please share pics
12:46 PM travis_farmer[m4: i may just wait for new shop to be finished
12:46 PM solarwind: I don't know how I'd fit _any_ of my tools other than the hand tools inside a camper
12:46 PM solarwind: like everything in here weighs a minimum of 1/2 ton

12:47 PM solarwind: That is impressive
12:47 PM solarwind: what are the dimensions on that router?
12:48 PM travis_farmer[m4: i think about 5-foot by 6-foot (48" X 48" working area)
12:48 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: A couple of angle brackets would work fine to support the AC in the window. You obviously couldn't move the trailer like that but it would work fine just sitting there. The window AC units aren't that heavy.
12:48 PM solarwind: travis_farmer[m4 yeah a couple of 2x4 lumber is all you need to support the AC
12:49 PM solarwind: like you can set the whole thing up in a couple of hours tops
12:49 PM travis_farmer[m4: zincboy_ca_on: the windows don't open to fit a A/C
12:49 PM solarwind: travis_farmer[m4 also, did you build that router yourself?
12:49 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Anything opens with a sawzall 🙂
12:49 PM solarwind: was just about to say that haha
12:49 PM travis_farmer[m4: ... ...true
12:50 PM solarwind: I'm in the process of building a large format router to machine full sheets of plywood
12:50 PM travis_farmer[m4: no, i bought the machine itself used
12:50 PM solarwind: nice
12:51 PM travis_farmer[m4: my current shop wouldn't fit a 4-foot by 8-foot router table ;-)
12:51 PM travis_farmer[m4: new shop would though...
12:51 PM solarwind: are you building the workshop yourself?
02:15 PM travis_farmer[m4: awful quiet in here... can almost hear crickets... ;-)

03:39 PM travis_farmer[m4: big storm about to hit
03:48 PM dyntaos: I'm having an issue getting my machine running. Its running on a Pi4 which I duplicated the SD byte for byte from another working machine. My config (INI & HAL) are based on the other machine albeit they are not identical. I am getting errors about shared memory issues. I have hit a bit of a wall here. Here is my execution output:
03:48 PM dyntaos: https://pastebin.com/JmZfyhRL  Can anyone throw any suggestions at me?
03:49 PM Tom_L: how much memory does it have?
03:49 PM Tom_L: works best with 8
03:52 PM dyntaos: Its a Pi4 so I would have expected 4 or 8 but `free-h` reports 2. That being said, I have 1.2Gb available and the other machine seems to be fine. Ill go check if that has the same amount of memoruy
03:53 PM travis_farmer[m4: i have a Rpi4 (CM4) that is only 1GB
03:59 PM dyntaos: I grabbed the Pi4 from the other machine and I am booting it and will check its memory and see if it can run this machine
04:00 PM dyntaos: It is a 2GB as well
04:02 PM dyntaos: I get the same error on both Pis (same SD card).
04:05 PM dyntaos: While I watched htop while running linuxcnc I only got to about 560M of 1.76G. I don't think its a memory issue
04:09 PM Tom_L: 2 is hardly enough
04:28 PM Unterhaus_: the older lcnc sd card image for Pi4 doesn't work on newer Pi's
04:29 PM Unterhaus_: I'm not sure if that image is still up on the website
04:29 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:30 PM Unterhausen: forget exactly what I did when I ran into this problem, but I think I got a debian image from the forum
04:31 PM Unterhausen: sorry, reading comprehension problems, this doesn't apply
07:31 PM CAKESLOB: allenstown wasnt too bad
07:31 PM CAKESLOB: Unterhausen , i should have lstened to that billy joel song, it didnt get a bunch of jokes because of it
07:32 PM CAKESLOB: but yeah, looks like you are getting all the smoke down there lol
