02:44 AM XXCoder: crazy https://youtu.be/-S6IMTOuLYQ
02:44 AM XXCoder: removing nut from $20,000 part
02:44 AM XXCoder: seizured nut
02:44 AM XXCoder: I bet I cant afford the nut on it
04:03 AM travis_farmer[m4: Morning ☕️
04:10 AM travis_farmer[m4: 50F with a high of 83F
04:35 AM Tom_L: morning
04:52 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:20 AM JT-Cave: monring
05:32 AM Deejay_ is now known as Deejay
05:32 AM Deejay: re
05:39 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
06:38 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
07:03 AM JT-Cave: hmm reboot does not fix it
07:04 AM Tom_L: bad switch?
07:05 AM JT-Cave: not sure, the lights blink...
07:05 AM XXCoder: stepper or something loose?
07:05 AM XXCoder: or it passed wire bend limit and internally broke
07:19 AM JT-Cave: that's funny right there I don't care who you are
07:19 AM XXCoder: ?
07:20 AM JT-Cave: this morning when I went to open the outer doors of the coops I reached in coop deux to turn off the fans and it's the second switch so I felt for it and turned it off
07:20 AM JT-Cave: turns out I turned off the breaker for the rpi and the switch
07:22 AM XXCoder: wrong switch?
07:30 AM JT-Cave: not even the light switch but a breaker
07:30 AM XXCoder: oh thats fun
07:31 AM XXCoder: in least you didnt reach for emf bomb switch below that ;)
07:39 AM JT-Cave: that one is stuck off by chicken shit
07:41 AM XXCoder: lol
07:53 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
08:26 AM JT-Cave: https://github.com/jethornton/mesact/issues/114
10:20 AM * travis_farmer[m4 uploaded an image: (5726KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/QERZvaTRGcxlhvGMBEGJGKPu/20230623_110412.jpg >
10:20 AM travis_farmer[m4: just now, in focus, a little faster feed, but still blurry
10:21 AM travis_farmer[m4: i think i need to get the air hooked u to it... blow away the smoke...
10:22 AM travis_farmer[m4: up, not "u"
10:25 AM JT-Shop: air assist?
10:25 AM travis_farmer[m4: yeah, i have to get the air-assist hooked up
10:26 AM JT-Shop: that makes a huge difference in quality
10:26 AM JT-Shop: no if I could just remember to turn it on...
10:27 AM travis_farmer[m4: ok, good to know. i am waiting on money to order a inline flow regulator to cut the air pressure down to 10psi or so for the air assist to work
10:28 AM JT-Shop: using shop air?
10:28 AM travis_farmer[m4: yes
10:28 AM roycroft: jt-shop: you can create a "notes" layer on your engraving files that is non-printable, and you can add a reminder note to turn the air assist on to that
10:29 AM JT-Shop: you could just reduce the flow with a needle valve if you have one
10:29 AM JT-Shop: roycroft, thanks
10:29 AM travis_farmer[m4: that's what i need to buy, JT
10:29 AM JT-Shop: you could also plug a fitting with a set screw and drill a small hole in it
10:30 AM JT-Shop: same thing but free
10:30 AM travis_farmer[m4: Hmmm, interesting idea...
10:30 AM * JT-Shop goes to work on the chicken dirt rock separator
10:31 AM JT-Shop: I've used that for leak testers in the past
10:31 AM roycroft: i took my countertop out of the clamps this morning
10:31 AM roycroft: it's almost flat on the bottom - it's bowed up about 1mm in the middle
10:31 AM JT-Shop: how did it come out?
10:31 AM roycroft: so it should be easy to get dead flat
10:31 AM JT-Shop: nice
10:31 AM roycroft: i'm going to a concert this evening, and likely won't be able to set up the router sled again today, but i might squeeze that in
10:32 AM roycroft: i can get it flattened and sanded and some finish on it this weekend for sure
10:32 AM roycroft: i guess i should find out if daphne wants me to stain it or not
10:32 AM roycroft: everything at our booth is dark and weathered
10:33 AM roycroft: light birch would be a big contrast to that
10:34 AM roycroft: she gave me those slabs four years ago
10:34 AM roycroft: they took a really long time to stop moving so i could do this
11:37 AM CaptHindsight[m]: that crushed can CEO is the kind of people I keep running into
11:37 AM CaptHindsight[m]: don't want to pay, don't want to know
11:38 AM CaptHindsight[m]: too bad they had to drag that kid along to the bottom
12:10 PM roycroft: my replacement shaper origin has shipped
12:11 PM roycroft: and they sent me a return shipping label for the old one, so i don't have to pay any shipping cost
12:11 PM travis_farmer[m4: i missed it, what happened to the first?
12:11 PM roycroft: the auto z-touch feature does not work
12:11 PM roycroft: so i have to touch it off manually
12:12 PM travis_farmer[m4: oh, that sounds like a real PITA
12:12 PM roycroft: roycroft.us/ztouch.mov
12:13 PM roycroft: the way it works is that spindle goes down, and the sensor detects when the base is lifted as the cutter touches the part
12:13 PM roycroft: but mine just keeps lifting until it gives up
12:14 PM travis_farmer[m4: hmm, yeah, sounds flunky. glad they are replacing it :-)
12:15 PM roycroft: so far they've been really good to work with
12:15 PM roycroft: and somtimes having an issue out of the box is good, because it presents an opportunity to test the support channel
12:16 PM travis_farmer[m4: yeah, always good to have good support. i heard the LCNC one sucks... (kidding ;-) )
12:16 PM roycroft: they've been a little slower than i'd like in getting this done and in responding to my emails, but not terribly slow
12:16 PM roycroft: and they just had a big promo over father's day weekend, so i'm sure they're all scrambling to process orders
12:16 PM roycroft: lcnc support is as good as the quality of your mirror :)
12:17 PM travis_farmer[m4: lol
12:18 PM travis_farmer[m4: i have been happy with the LCNC support i have gotten over the years. took me from a newbie, to whatever i am today ;-)
12:48 PM travis_farmer[m4: 82F outside, and it feels even hotter in my shop...
01:04 PM roycroft: so shaper have overnighted my replacement origin, with saturday delivery
01:04 PM roycroft: that's both good and bad
01:04 PM roycroft: good that they're so responsive, but bad because i'm supposed to be at the fair site working on our booth all day tomorrow
01:05 PM roycroft: now i have to stay home and wait for the parcel
01:06 PM Tom_L: weekend has arrived
01:07 PM Tom_L: none too soon
01:10 PM roycroft: not for me, yet
01:10 PM roycroft: but the weekend is hours away
01:10 PM roycroft: my weekend days will be busier than my work week days
01:16 PM Tom03[m] is now known as tom030[m]
01:55 PM skunkworks[m]: he calculated the amount of TNT the catastrouphic failure would be...
01:55 PM skunkworks[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdz9vcSFBqw&t=495s
02:00 PM zed_thirteen[m] is now known as zed_thirteen0[m]
02:14 PM roycroft: implosion of the submarine-like thing was the best possible outcome, other than a safe rescue
02:14 PM roycroft: the passengers would have been killed almost instantly, and would not have been aware of their fate
02:14 PM roycroft: it's way better than running out of oxygen slowly
02:16 PM Scopeuk: The suggestion has been arround 30ms from failure to nothing left
02:16 PM roycroft: which is not enough time to realize what has happened
02:21 PM roycroft: so a couple days ago i got an invitation from shaper to join their kickstarter on the shaper trace before it was open to the general public
02:21 PM roycroft: i'm still not sure what i think about the shaper trace, but the price i got was really good, and i can cancel my order until late july
02:21 PM roycroft: so i signed up and funded it
02:22 PM roycroft: i had never done anything with kickstarter before
02:22 PM roycroft: now i'm getting 3-4 emails/day asking me to be one of the early funders of the shaper trace - the thing i already ordered and paid for - and as many or more emails per day asking me to fund other projects
02:23 PM roycroft: it has to be about the spammiest site i've ever dealt with
02:23 PM roycroft: speaking of which
02:24 PM roycroft: i received my 4th or 5th email of the day at 12:17, which is what prompte me to discuss their spamminess
02:24 PM roycroft: i just got another one at 12:21
02:24 PM roycroft: and not a dup - a completely different email
02:25 PM * roycroft has to get this under control somehow
02:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I can make a LCNC version of that trace thing
02:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but people will complain about "Linux"
02:40 PM roycroft: i'm not sure how useful it will be
02:40 PM roycroft: but i paid $49 for it, and that includes the frame
02:40 PM roycroft: and i have a month to change my mind
02:40 PM roycroft: it's probably $49 useful
02:42 PM roycroft: it's not going to be released until october, though, and i'll likely have already done most of what i'd find it useful for by october
02:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there was a student from India on the forums a couple of years ago asking about a metal cutting plasma robot that could cover an area 3 x 5 meters and handle 15mm thick plates
02:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: a wire grid and a few webcams can do it to <1mm repeatability
02:44 PM roycroft: yeah, that would work
02:45 PM roycroft: the same principle as the shaper origin
02:45 PM roycroft: just duct tape a plasma torch on a roomba and give it a grid to use to locate itself
02:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what should I call mine?
02:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: The Plasmoomba
02:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: nah maybe too familiar
02:47 PM roycroft: plasmatronia
03:02 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (238KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/DYceeXfBryUPpHuAiotEaeqa/20230623_150140_2466378522396734903.jpg >
03:03 PM solarwind: What's the cheapest abrasive blasting for cleaning metal?
03:03 PM solarwind: I have a sand blasting cabinet and various media, as well as a high pressure washer with a wet sand blasting kit
03:03 PM JT-Shop: chicken dirt rock separator done to perfection
03:04 PM solarwind: Small parts go in the blasting cabinet of course. But I'm talking about larger metal pieces about 100kg that can't really be handled easily
03:04 PM solarwind: Doesn't have to be abrasive blasting, could also be wire wheel, needle scaler, etc.
03:05 PM solarwind: I have a lot of metal to clean, so I'm leaning towards the wet sand blasting outside in a semi contained area where I can collect the media and reuse it
03:06 PM roycroft: the cheapest is probably sharp sand, which can be gotten from a construction supply purveyor
03:06 PM roycroft: but it won't be the most cost effective, as you'll exhaust its usefulness quickly
03:07 PM roycroft: probably the most cost effective would be aluminium oxide, with a proper recovery system
03:07 PM solarwind: roycroft for use with the wet sand blaster? Or with a regular dry sand blaster outside without reusing it
03:07 PM roycroft: i don't have experience with wet sandblasting
03:07 PM solarwind: Ok thanks, didn't know about the aluminum oxide media. I'll pick some up and give it a shot
03:08 PM roycroft: aluminium oxide is pretty hard and can be reused many times
03:08 PM solarwind: I can probably build a tent around the thing I'm sand blasting
03:08 PM solarwind: recover with a shop vac or something
03:08 PM roycroft: depending on what you're doing and the condition of the metal, a rust converter like phosphoric acid might be a good way to go
03:10 PM solarwind: It's an old double axle trailer someone gave me, mostly surface rust
03:10 PM solarwind: frame itself is not rusted through
03:10 PM roycroft: if there's a bunch of loose rust i'd consider a needle scaler to remove the loose stuff, then a phosphoric acid treatment, then por-15
03:11 PM roycroft: use a wire wheel for the loose rust removal if you wish
03:11 PM solarwind: Ok thanks I'll try that out
03:11 PM roycroft: i try to avoid wire wheels because i find tiny bits of wire embedded in my skin to be rather uncomfortable
03:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just fyi por-15 is a urethane cured by isocyanates
03:13 PM roycroft: i'm assuming solarwind either has a supplied air respirator or doesn't care :)
03:13 PM solarwind: The dremel sized wire wheels are the worst. The cup wheels for angle grinders and cleaning welds, I never had a problem with, mostly because I'm protected by gloves and full welding protection
03:13 PM roycroft: you're familiar with the problem
03:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: one shot of poutine gravy and it cures mist anything
03:14 PM solarwind: Yes, I have a PAPR helmet, breathing air supply system from my air compressor, etc.
03:14 PM roycroft: so you can best decide between a needle scaler, wire wheel, or other method of removing the loose stuff
03:14 PM solarwind: 0.3µm -> 0.1µm -> 0.01µm -> charcoal filter for breathing air line :)
03:14 PM roycroft: por-15 is almost miraculous, but it's still best to remove the loose rust first
03:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there is better stuff
03:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but it's easy to find por-15
03:24 PM roycroft: i'm not a professional painter
03:24 PM roycroft: i just know that por-15 works well
03:25 PM roycroft: but one should know what it is, what it does, and how it works before applying it
03:31 PM roycroft: impressive
03:32 PM roycroft: i-95 in philly has reopened ahead of schedule
03:32 PM roycroft: 12 days after the damage
03:33 PM XXCoder: interesting. https://blog.prusa3d.com/upgrade-your-farmstead-with-3d-printing_73725/
03:33 PM XXCoder: one of em is half automatic coop door
03:33 PM XXCoder: chickens can get out themselves, but you close it
04:01 PM roycroft: i could make that out of scraps of wood in 10 minutes
04:03 PM XXCoder: yeah expected that
04:41 PM * roycroft wonders how much longer the titan news cycle will last
04:45 PM XXCoder: likely will ramp down, till more findings then probably done
04:46 PM XXCoder: then finally final cycle of "summary" stuff and done for good
04:54 PM roycroft: it's been almost a week
04:54 PM roycroft: one of the longest news cycles not involving $formerpresident we've had in a long time
04:55 PM XXCoder: dont forget queen death
04:55 PM XXCoder: man that was months
04:56 PM XXCoder: got to point where in rss feed I searched for queen and just marked all of em read
04:56 PM XXCoder: yes it was sad and all, but after 2 months and reporting on tiny aspects of it i was done
05:02 PM andypugh: Our news has started on the “Why so much fuss about 5 billionaires when 700 migrants drowned in the Med”
05:03 PM XXCoder: yeah
05:03 PM XXCoder: I guess it just has more draw, with more money and uniqueness, rather than number of death
05:13 PM roycroft: andypugh: that's easy, because the titan thing is more "human" and people can emphathise with those five people more
05:13 PM roycroft: because they're all white people
05:14 PM roycroft: and i know two of them weren't white
05:14 PM roycroft: but they were a billionaire and his son
05:14 PM andypugh: Yeah, it’s true. We can all imagine being trapped in a sunken thing with the air running out, and how mush we would appreciate being rescued.
05:14 PM roycroft: so even though they were pakistani, they were rich enough to be white
05:15 PM roycroft: whereas migrants are all dirty brown people who are coming in swarms to take our jobs
05:15 PM roycroft: but anyway, hopefully the news cycle will churn over the weekend
05:27 PM Tom_L: wonder what it was a distraction from
06:02 PM roycroft: weird - i was using the router sled and popped a breaker on a fairly light cut
06:02 PM roycroft: resetting the breaker did not restore power
06:02 PM roycroft: so i may have a faulty cicuit breaker, and i don't have any spares on hand of that type
06:02 PM Tom_L: breaer on the router?
06:02 PM roycroft: no
06:02 PM Tom_L: breaker*
06:02 PM roycroft: mains panel
06:02 PM Tom_L: mmm
06:03 PM Tom_L: yeah, the tools have thermal breakers
06:03 PM roycroft: i'll have to use a different circuit to finish
06:03 PM roycroft: yes, but i traced it back to the receptacle, which is dead
06:03 PM Tom_L: not a GFCI is it?
06:03 PM roycroft: the router was plugged into my extractor, which was plugged into an extension cord, which was plugged into the receptacle
06:03 PM roycroft: no
06:03 PM Tom_L: or whatever they're called
06:04 PM Tom_L: cord rated for the Amps?
06:04 PM roycroft: yes
06:04 PM roycroft: it's not terribly odd to trip a breaker
06:04 PM roycroft: but for the breaker to not reset is
06:04 PM Tom_L: i've got spares but have no clue where they are :)
06:04 PM roycroft: especially cince it hasn't been cycled all that often
06:04 PM roycroft: there's the other problem
06:05 PM roycroft: because i'm tight on panel spaces, this one is a twin breaker
06:05 PM roycroft: i get 1 250v circuit and 2 120v circuits in the space of a single full size breaker
06:06 PM roycroft: so i have to replace the whole thing, and the other 120v leg on that breaker feeds half of my computer server rack
06:06 PM roycroft: so i'm going to need to shut down half my servers to swap the breaker
06:06 PM roycroft: all signs are pointing to being done with this for the day, since i'm going to a concert in the early evening, and regrouping in the morning
07:39 PM roycroft: i did ok - i did swap circuits, flattened the top and sanded it to p150
07:39 PM * roycroft might actually get the counter done on time
