12:20 AM roycroft: the new yorkshire workshop guy just got an xtool p2
12:31 AM roycroft: he says using it is "like printing money"
12:31 AM XXCoder: thats third person I hear of youtube guy get a xtool
12:31 AM roycroft: it's shipping to the general public later this week
12:31 AM XXCoder: too bad it costs money lol
12:31 AM XXCoder: like $4k?
12:31 AM roycroft: i'm sure they sent a few out to youtubers to hype itup
12:31 AM roycroft: yes
12:31 AM roycroft: from what i've seen and read it's well worth it
12:31 AM XXCoder: yeah. if I had operating business I would have considering it
12:31 AM XXCoder: but I dont so eh :)
01:08 AM Deejay: moin
03:33 AM didiergm[m] is now known as didiergm0[m]
04:17 AM travis_farmer[m4: Morning ☕️
04:29 AM Tom_L: morning
04:48 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
05:01 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:25 AM travis_farmer[m4: there, just bought a Maine state flag, before they change to the new ugly flag :-)
05:27 AM XXCoder: what new flag?
05:28 AM * travis_farmer[m4 uploaded an image: (84KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/MbaVrolPJOPAUXssbOCQFQKF/npr.brightspotcdn.jpg >
05:28 AM travis_farmer[m4: top is the good one, bottom is the new flag
05:28 AM JT-Cave: damn the new flag is really ugly
05:28 AM XXCoder: uh thought bottom one was very old one
05:28 AM travis_farmer[m4: yes it is
05:29 AM travis_farmer[m4: it is the old old one, they seem to think we should change back
05:29 AM XXCoder: well it would get better grade from grey flag scoring system lol
05:30 AM XXCoder: if I remember right maine got something like F - D (theres subgrade in F because so many flags went there)
05:30 AM travis_farmer[m4: still ugly though...
05:31 AM XXCoder: wa state flag did better, but still low due to words and bit overly detailed george washington guy graphic
05:31 AM XXCoder: so it was either very high grade in F or D something
05:31 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4w6808wJcU
05:33 AM XXCoder: ah yes F-C for wa state
05:34 AM XXCoder: same as maine. yay grade twins :P
05:37 AM XXCoder: texas along with few states gets S tier. because its unique, simple, and dont have words
05:38 AM CloudEvil: The above is a quality video
05:38 AM XXCoder: one of grey best. so fun.
05:38 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
05:42 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
05:43 AM Loetmichel: *giggle* $me just walked through the company with a dozen 27" EMI shield glass panes in my hands. Co-worker accidentally tripped me, i barely managed to not fall face first. "hey, be a bit more careful where you walk, i am carrying $6k in 1.1mm glass panes at the moment!" Co-worker goes pale... :) Soemtimes its really better to not think about what the stuff costs here. :)
05:43 AM XXCoder: travis_farmer[m4: well at end your state will get S tier. simple and unique lol
05:43 AM XXCoder: ow
05:47 AM CloudEvil: Loetmichel: And, well, if you cut your arms off, it might cost the company more than $6K
05:49 AM Loetmichel: CloudEvil: improbable, the panes are laminated with a polyester foil with copper mesh on the back side, they will not fall apart. just be expensive scrap.
05:49 AM CloudEvil: Is the foil mesh finer enough than the pixel layout that moirre isn't an issue?
05:50 AM Loetmichel: the "paper"cuts i regularily get from the 35um copper tape we use for shielding are probably nastier because copper cuts heal atrociously slow
05:51 AM Loetmichel: yep, its 0.1mm grid mesh
05:52 AM CloudEvil: It's really nice that monitors finally stopped being 100dpi
05:52 AM CloudEvil: (for 4K ones at least)
05:53 AM Loetmichel: the trick is that the mesh is exactly 43° to the pixel grid.
05:54 AM Loetmichel: you can see the moiree appear an disappear when you turn a pane on a display, its kinda funny
05:55 AM CloudEvil: Fun.
06:02 AM * travis_farmer[m4 enjoys a Jimmy Dean breakfast bowl
06:06 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozSE7Wrdb1o
06:06 AM XXCoder: think I saw that before
06:09 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li9dNm7l6As
06:10 AM XXCoder: hammering it out
06:10 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jr4Capx8XI
06:11 AM XXCoder: last one pretty easy
06:12 AM JT-Cave: yeah I like the last one better
06:12 AM XXCoder: smoking
06:12 AM XXCoder: I wonder if could shape cutting edge on the block
06:13 AM XXCoder: then harden it
06:15 AM XXCoder: round one is similiar to what I was thinking
06:15 AM XXCoder: he used weld to add very hard metal to edges though
06:16 AM JT-Cave: yeah a full cutting edge would be better for any shape because the weld seam is not in the same place
06:29 AM JT-Cave: time to break fast
07:26 AM * JT-Cave makes more progress on the build hal :)
07:36 AM JT-Cave: YIPPIEE it moves...
07:51 AM * travis_farmer[m4 ponders his project for the day...
08:08 AM Tom_L: just buy $eamless tubing :)
08:20 AM JT-Shop: you spelled it wrong... it's $$$eamless
08:26 AM Tom_L: yeah
08:26 AM Tom_L: what does hal do now?
08:27 AM Tom_L: when i was running the multi spindles we ran some seamless tubing on them
08:32 AM travis_farmer[m4: LMAO, out in my shop, and caught motion in a window... there was a deer staring at me through the window! LOL
08:33 AM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (1416KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/hDupIhhJRfDLLjuFOUNlhvLt/20230620_092958.jpg >
08:33 AM travis_farmer[m]: Just as it ran off
08:36 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I have more work done on hal up to stepgen and analog now
08:38 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
08:54 AM Tom_L: i'll check if i can figure out why this wireless kbd isn't working the way it should
08:54 AM JT-Cave: damn ups view details sucks now it only shows "on the way"
08:54 AM JT-Cave: what a waste of electrons
08:54 AM * JT-Cave goes back to cleaning chicken shit
08:55 AM Tom_L: may have to switch back to wired
09:00 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, is the swapped XYZY XYYZ thing still a mess?
09:03 AM JT-Cave: yes, but I did confirm that emc don't care what order the joints are for a gantry
09:04 AM Tom_L: ok
09:04 AM Tom_L: the axis is defined inside the joint section anyway
09:05 AM Tom_L: i assume the 'Test Build HAL' is a temporary button
09:20 AM JT-Shop: everything in the test group box is temporary
09:20 AM JT-Shop: the test build hal will build and display the result in the info tab
10:20 AM JT-Shop: just got a Z51 spoiler for $200, just have to meet the guy about 70 miles away when he passes through
11:10 AM roycroft: my local woodcraft store is really hyping the alex snodgrass visit
11:10 AM roycroft: i guess i should thank them for the constant reminders to not shop there on july 1st
11:11 AM roycroft: it would cost me $30 just to step foot in the store that day, even if i only wanted to buy some glue
11:11 AM roycroft: and $550 to actually go meet alex
11:12 AM * roycroft has put "don't go to woodcraft" on his calendar
11:12 AM CloudEvil: If I was to pay $550 to visit a woodworking related celebrity, they'd better actually be an Ent.
11:12 AM JT-Cave: when you can watch his video for free
11:13 AM roycroft: alex snodgrass is entertaining
11:13 AM roycroft: and very good at what he does
11:13 AM CloudEvil: At some point you gotta price according to the market
11:13 AM roycroft: but he's not the only person who can cut a reindeer out of a block of wood freehand in less than a minute
11:14 AM JT-Cave: I assume the $550 is not just to meet him but attend his class
11:14 AM roycroft: i don't mind the seminar
11:14 AM roycroft: yes, it's to attend his class
11:14 AM roycroft: what i mind is that i can't even step foot in the store to buy something that day without paying the $30 entrance fee
11:15 AM roycroft: i don't think i should have to pay just to be in the same building as alex (or anyone)
11:15 AM roycroft: i guess they're concerned that he might wander out of the classroom and accidently mingle with folks
11:16 AM * roycroft wonders what they would charge if norm abrams showed up
11:17 AM roycroft: that's the weekend before the fair anyway, so i doubt i'd be going to woodcraft - i'll be pretty busy with other stuff
11:38 AM solarwind: Question about O ring boss fittings: https://catalog.scfastening.com/Asset/1031-6808-NWO-FG.jpg
11:38 AM solarwind: having a bit of trouble understanding how this particular type of fitting seals
11:39 AM solarwind: there's a regular non-sealing thread, then an O ring, then a loose-fitting washer whose inner diameter tolerance has no sealing effect, then a nut to press the O ring into the seat
11:40 AM solarwind: so is the idea to compress the O ring against the seat and the surface of the smooth "pipe" part just above the thread?
11:42 AM solarwind: and how tight should the nut be? Is it such that the O ring seat is machined for just the right amount of compression and therefore the nut should be as tight as reasonably possible?
11:43 AM solarwind: I can't seem to find a reference for those dimensions. I'm going to switch from JIC flare fittings to likely O ring face anyway, for pneumatic and vacuum applications
11:44 AM solarwind: JIC flare seems to need a lot of precision in the alignment of the flare nut and threads to get a good seal for high vacuum
11:44 AM solarwind: getting a lot better results with ORFS
12:08 PM roycroft: i would tighten the nut until it seals, and then a wee bit more
12:32 PM perry_j1987: darn getting too much lift up with these hex clamps
01:17 PM * JT-Shop is not happy with the menards oscillating drum sander, the sanding drums are not held tight and spin on the mandrel
01:17 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:18 PM JT-Shop: interesting the menards brand is the same as horrible frieght
01:18 PM roycroft: the performax?
01:19 PM JT-Shop: I'd have to go look
01:19 PM roycroft: i have the get benchtop spindle sander and i really ike it
01:19 PM roycroft: like
01:19 PM roycroft: i hear the grizzly is good, too
01:19 PM roycroft: rigid, not so much, and the performax is crap
01:21 PM JT-Woodshop: yup the performax
01:21 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Sander-Cabinet/Sander-Cabinet-1.jpeg
01:22 PM JT-Woodshop: when I bought it I was in a hurry to get one to finish a project
01:22 PM roycroft: i made some groovy drawer inserts to hold the sanding sleeves
01:22 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Sander-Cabinet/Sander-Cabinet-7.jpeg
01:22 PM roycroft: the 3" spindle does not come with the sander, but you can get the spindle and table insert for it for about $100
01:23 PM * JT-Woodshop humms the final jeopardy tune while it loads
01:23 PM * JT-Woodshop heads back to the machine shop
01:24 PM roycroft: it has an odd-size extractor port, but i printed an adapter for both a standard 2-1/2" shop vac hose and for a festool 27mm extractor hose
01:24 PM JT-Shop: the performax port is a bit odd too
01:25 PM JT-Shop: the spindle wobbles a bit too on the performax
01:25 PM roycroft: i'm not sure they were designed for an extractor
01:25 PM roycroft: but i can't use mine without extraction - it's way too messy
01:25 PM roycroft: but that's what 3d printers are for
01:25 PM roycroft: i believe there's a powermatic spindle sander as well
01:26 PM roycroft: and if you have the floor space, a stationary spindle sander would be ideal
01:26 PM roycroft: i wish i had room for one
01:26 PM JT-Shop: I turned an adapter for the festool to fit something...
01:26 PM roycroft: i'd cl that performax asap
01:26 PM JT-Shop: yep
01:27 PM roycroft: yikes
01:27 PM roycroft: my jet is $609 now
01:27 PM roycroft: iirc i paid about $300 for it years ago
01:28 PM JT-Shop: https://www.grizzly.com/search?q=(category:%22Oscillating+Spindle+Sanders%22)
01:28 PM JT-Shop: 1/4hp is twice the price of the 1/2hp
01:29 PM roycroft: it's the green version
01:29 PM roycroft: i'd get the g1071
01:30 PM * roycroft heads to the bank and to the domino store
01:30 PM JT-Shop: yup the g1071 looks like a good one
01:31 PM JT-Shop: 4" dust port on the g1071
01:33 PM roycroft: it gets good reviews
01:39 PM JT-Shop: in the photos the center filler is not flush lol
02:38 PM roycroft: jt-shop: in case i haven't mentioned this to you before, i get my sanding sleeves from 2sand.com - they have a great variety and really good prices
03:20 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:33 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, thanks
03:35 PM JT-Shop: I had to take 1mm off the locators... they were a bit tight on the honeycomb
03:52 PM roycroft: i haven't figured out how i'm going to fixture my honeycomb yet
03:52 PM roycroft: but i do want it fixed very firmly, so i can index off of it
04:23 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: There is a specific countersink like feature required on the ORB port. It is the sealing surface for the o ring in conjunction with the washer. If you don’t have the countersink feature the oring will just squeeze out when tightened
04:24 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Lookup sae J1926-1
04:49 PM travis_farmer[m4: signing off for supper :-) KFC tonight! :-D
05:58 PM Unterhausen: does lcnc run on playstation clones?
06:02 PM Tom_itx: why would it?
06:05 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (274KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/UGBpAoIEBGmThTdNDSoUutVL/20230620_180436.jpg >

06:06 PM XXCoder: guy disconnected after asking it
06:06 PM XXCoder: oh guys back
06:06 PM Unterhausen: did you answer while I was gone?
06:06 PM XXCoder: jt new sandbox?
06:07 PM Unterhausen: if they can run a submarine on a playstation clone, lcnc should run
06:07 PM XXCoder: is it about that sub thats lost now?
06:07 PM Tom_itx: they got to the moon on much less
06:07 PM XXCoder: there is... numberous problems at that sub apparently.
06:08 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
06:08 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/4dka29FSZac?t=1013 pause right away to read list
06:09 PM XXCoder: front port glass was only rated to 1200 meters. company refused to pay them to make one rated to 4000 depth
06:09 PM Unterhausen: ouch
06:10 PM Unterhausen: they managed to do some number of dives, but still $6 million isn't enough to escape and hide
06:12 PM Unterhausen: the computers they used to go to the moon were pretty robust, if not particularly capable
06:12 PM Unterhausen: playstation is very capable, but not particularly robust
06:12 PM XXCoder: its possible that people and ceo of the sub company will die due to many rash decisions
06:12 PM CAKESLOB: tell me more about this playstation submarine...
06:12 PM Tom_L: the SR71 was flown with a stick
06:13 PM CAKESLOB: i cant tell if it was a joke or not
06:13 PM Unterhausen: it's not a joke, it was a playstation clone
06:13 PM Unterhausen: made by logitech
06:14 PM Unterhausen: the SR71 was built by people who very much knew what they were doing
06:14 PM XXCoder: honestly im not sure why.
06:14 PM Tom_L: with slide rules
06:14 PM Unterhausen: you don't need computers to draw a nyquist diagram
06:14 PM XXCoder: also apparently ceo had voice commucations removed because he didnt like to be interuppted with status report requests
06:15 PM Unterhausen: was the ceo on board this time?
06:15 PM CAKESLOB: yeah
06:15 PM XXCoder: sub dont have any emergacy stuff. no pinger, no emergacy vents etc
06:15 PM XXCoder: yeah ceo and 2 billionaires, and one of billionare sons
06:15 PM XXCoder: and 2 more people
06:15 PM Unterhausen: maybe they'll rename murphy's law now, that's the kind of thing that he became famous for
06:16 PM Unterhausen: But at least Murphy didn't kill anyone
06:16 PM JT-Shop: XXCoder, was a rock separator but I made the top too small
06:16 PM XXCoder: ahh
06:16 PM XXCoder: it looked similiar to the sand bath so i wondered if it was addition to it
06:17 PM Unterhausen: debian just updated the bios firmware on my computer. I'm very trusting
06:17 PM Tom_L: heh
06:17 PM XXCoder: I just used bios to update bios
06:19 PM XXCoder: my motherboard has a interesting tech. it can update bios even if it has no cpu and ram
06:20 PM XXCoder: which is cool
06:20 PM XXCoder: though I just booted into bios and updated firmware
06:25 PM skunkworks[m]: XXCoder: yes - that is pretty cool.. I needed to do this because the motherboard wasn't recognizing the new (at the time) processor..
06:25 PM XXCoder: i forgot details though, I guess it only needs usb with very specific filename in it, and special button pressed on when it turns on?
06:26 PM skunkworks[m]: 5700g
06:26 PM XXCoder: does it even display anything?
06:26 PM skunkworks[m]: no
06:26 PM XXCoder: mines 5600g
06:26 PM XXCoder: I wonder how you know its done flashing?
06:26 PM Tom_L: guess?
06:27 PM skunkworks[m]: It has been a year - but I think it had a flashy led
06:27 PM XXCoder: interesting. thanks
06:28 PM CAKESLOB: holy shit the forum editor is the worst
06:29 PM skunkworks[m]: I have a 7800X3D at work - it is pretty amazing
06:31 PM skunkworks[m]: also - the intel arc 750 is pretty cool for the price
06:31 PM roycroft: shaper want me to go play with the origin some more
06:31 PM roycroft: they think if i push on the sensor enough times it might start working
06:31 PM * roycroft is dubious
06:31 PM roycroft: but i'll humor them
06:31 PM XXCoder: it might have fixed some machines that way, though certainly not for sure for your machine
06:32 PM roycroft: there's a chance it might work
06:32 PM roycroft: but even if it does, i'm not sure how much i trust it after that
06:32 PM roycroft: i guess time would tell
06:33 PM Tom_L: until the warranty is up
06:35 PM Tom_L: what sort of sensor is it?
06:35 PM Unterhausen: it costs a rich person about the same amount to die at the bottom of the ocean as it would cost them to die on everest
06:36 PM Tom_L: either way they may not be found
06:37 PM skunkworks[m]: we were talking about that today.. that is like my worse nightmare.. Hope it happened fast.
06:39 PM Tom_L: what was their last known depth?
06:42 PM roycroft: no change in behavior
06:42 PM roycroft: as anticipated
06:42 PM * roycroft thinks he would rather die ascending everest than suffocate in a mini-van at the bottom of the ocean
06:43 PM roycroft: i'm a little claustrophobic, so i probably would not get in the mini-van sub in the first place
06:43 PM Tom_L: if it imploded it would be quick
06:44 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: planned depth was 4000
06:44 PM XXCoder: meter
06:44 PM roycroft: i'm not sure it would implode, as it regularly descends to the shipwreck, which i presume is on the ocean floor
06:44 PM XXCoder: roy previously they would go to 3000 meter depth if I recall right
06:45 PM roycroft: i should think that folks would experience dizziness from the lack of oxygen, pass out, and never wake up
06:45 PM XXCoder: or oxygen poisoning
06:45 PM roycroft: whatever the case
06:45 PM XXCoder: if they cheaped out and used high oxygen. which is bad for high pressure
06:45 PM roycroft: i've said before that i would not want to be a billionaire, as there's too much respondibility
06:46 PM XXCoder: or co2 scubber failed, etc
06:46 PM roycroft: and being able to go on a trip like that is part of the responsibility i would not want
06:46 PM Tom_L: roycroft, but you might get a better chance to make international news
06:46 PM roycroft: as it is, i'm not wealthy, and therefore cannot afford many dangerous things
06:51 PM roycroft: being not at all newsworthy suits me well, thank you very much
07:35 PM MikeM[m] is now known as mikemader0[m]
07:53 PM codebuster[m] is now known as codebus0[m]
08:03 PM XXCoder: 33 hiurs of oxygen
08:14 PM roycroft: chance of recovery are very slim at this point
08:15 PM XXCoder: yeah
