05:29 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:34 AM JT-Cave: 70°F - 90°F here
05:35 AM JT-Cave: no rain in sight
05:38 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
05:52 AM travis_farmer: i am not crazy about 90F, but i am jealous of no rain...
06:11 AM JT-Cave: we need rain
06:12 AM travis_farmer: i can see if i can send some, in payment for the second Mesa card... ;-)
06:33 AM travis_farmer: ... i take that as a no? ;-)
07:00 AM * JT-Cave breaks the fast
07:49 AM JT-Shop: fb marketplace just paid off someone wants the boxes full of kiln stuff I'm giving them away
07:50 AM travis_farmer: nice :-)
08:00 AM JT-Cave: was going to toss them out but I thought someone else might want the stuff
08:14 AM perry_j1987: morning
08:41 AM JT-Shop: yo
09:49 AM * travis_farmer is board out of his skull... really getting sick of rainy days... :-(
09:56 AM travis_farmer: i really need for my IRS tax return to be done, so i can get my workshop finished enough that i can move my machine into it. then i can work on gettig rid of the old shop (camper). probably just put it on FB Marketplace for free (needs 4 tires)
10:11 AM JT-Shop: I thought you had a tent like structure?
10:14 AM travis_farmer: i do, but i need to stud up the end-walls and put in a door.
10:15 AM travis_farmer: plus, there is no power in it yet...
10:17 AM JT-Shop: LOL I'm still on temp power in the big shop... one day I'll finish running the wires to the main breaker
10:18 AM travis_farmer: lol. i will be running 40A @ 240V out to it when i can afford enough wire. though, i could get by with 30A... wire would be cheaper...
10:19 AM JT-Shop: I'm double tapped into a 240v receptacle in the machine shop and the wire goes out the wall between the window AC and the wall
10:19 AM travis_farmer: lol, sounds safe ;-)
10:21 AM roycroft: maybe you should hire an electrician to finish it up for you, jt-shop
10:22 AM travis_farmer: i have a bit of conduit left over from my generator install, so i can bury the wire under ground
10:25 AM JT-Shop: would need a backhoe operator first to dig the trench... but wait I'm a backhoe operator
10:46 AM Unterhausen: there was a momentary power outage here last night because ihop was cooking too many pancakes at once
10:47 AM Unterhausen: some people didn't have power for many hours afterwards, I hope those pancakes were worth it
11:19 AM sensille: no fun eating a large pile of half-cooked pancakes
11:19 AM Deejay: you have a strange hobby, dude
11:26 AM CaptHindsight[m]: Unterhausen: what is life without pancakes?
11:27 AM roycroft: a lot less fattening
11:29 AM CaptHindsight[m]: pancakes vs flapjacks?
11:30 AM CaptHindsight[m]: ask the Brits
11:32 AM travis_farmer: i prefer flapcakes to panjacks ;-)
11:38 AM CaptHindsight[m]: hotcakes and the dreaded hotskebobs
11:39 AM Tom_L: was somebody deprived of breakfast today? it's nearly lunchtime...
11:39 AM JT-Cave: what no johnny cakes
11:41 AM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: Unterhausen has been without power overnight due to late night pancake fetishists
11:42 AM roycroft: the proper breakfast is grits
11:50 AM CaptHindsight[m]: https://youtu.be/pWC0sKCS5oA
11:52 AM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIdtb0-CIeA&t=444s
01:32 PM JT-Shop: awesome just gave a bunch of kiln stuff a new zip code
01:32 PM travis_farmer: :-)
02:09 PM Tom_L: the sky is falling
02:09 PM travis_farmer: ??? rain?
02:09 PM JT-Shop: send some this way
02:09 PM Tom_L: heavy rain & hail
02:09 PM Tom_L: light hai
02:09 PM Tom_L: l
02:10 PM travis_farmer: i don't like hail
02:11 PM Tom_L: we had some hail once: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/hail/hail6.jpg
02:13 PM JT-Shop: that would hurt...
02:15 PM roycroft: i've had three gazebos destroyed by hail
02:16 PM roycroft: the last time it happened the insurance company valued the two that got destroyed at well over what they were worth now, but i took the check
02:16 PM roycroft: and with the money i replaced the flimsy fabric tops with cedar boards
02:16 PM roycroft: i don't expect any more hail damage
02:16 PM Tom_L: that was several years back
02:17 PM roycroft: i've never experienced 2cm hail balls, but the hail storms we get are sometimes 1cm
02:17 PM roycroft: which is still enough to cause a lot of damage
02:18 PM roycroft: and yes, would be painful if one is outside not wearing a hard hat
02:18 PM Tom_L: this round was about pea size near as i could tell
02:18 PM roycroft: that's most typical here
02:18 PM roycroft: and that is still unpleasant to stand in
02:27 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, have you engraved any stainless steel?
02:28 PM JT-Shop: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0467/7985/9095/t/45/assets/d1pro20wv30_a51837048cb24d07add8a582b5c02cb7_1024x1024-1670236155455.png
03:03 PM Unterhausen: hail would be bad
03:04 PM Unterhausen: JT, how do they get color?
03:07 PM JT-Shop: not sure exactly but something to do with power level
03:08 PM XXCoder: by controlling oxide layer likely'
03:09 PM XXCoder: by structural color
03:17 PM roycroft: i have not engraved ss
03:17 PM roycroft: it's done by tempering it
03:17 PM roycroft: similarly to how one would temper carbon steel
03:18 PM roycroft: you heat it and it gets a straw color, then blue, then purple, then red, then yellow
03:18 PM XXCoder: I guess color space wouldnt be very large
03:18 PM roycroft: which, as jt-shp said, is done with power and speed
03:19 PM roycroft: it's exactly like heating it with a torch, except the torch tip is very tiny, and the power is very controlled
03:19 PM XXCoder: sounds fun lol
03:20 PM roycroft: i've been meaning to try it, but it's almost pointless with a 5w laser, and i haven't had time since i got the 20w laser
03:38 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, do you have a camera mounted on your D1?
03:48 PM roycroft: no
03:48 PM roycroft: i've considered doing so, but i haven't so far
03:48 PM roycroft: indexing parts on a laser engraver/cutter is kind of frustrating to one who is used to milling/lathe work
03:49 PM roycroft: but what i'm thinking of doing is indexing the honeycomb to the machine in a repeatable way, and then making some indexing fixtures for the honeycomb
04:04 PM perry_j1987: almost done building this new controller box
04:08 PM JT-Shop: the riser/indexer for the honeycomb looked pretty good except it's a solid block
04:08 PM JT-Shop: unmarked box just showed up
04:08 PM travis_farmer: my Mesa board?
04:10 PM JT-Shop: no, boxes from Mesa are covered with Fragile stickers :)
04:10 PM travis_farmer: oh, darn :-(
04:10 PM JT-Shop: I think that was my drop boxes by the road UPS driver he complained about the tree branches in the driveway
04:11 PM JT-Shop: Thursday
04:12 PM perry_j1987: im reviewing the microstepping stuff again. what do you guys suggest i setup this new box for
04:12 PM perry_j1987: its going to be running a ballscrew taig mill
04:20 PM JT-Shop: somewhere on line is a page about microstepping myths... Gecko uses 10 but morphs to 1
04:35 PM perry_j1987: think im going to give 4x a try
05:02 PM Tom_L: calculate how far the axis moves with one step
05:03 PM perry_j1987: if i remember right the ballscrews ere 2.5mm pitch
05:05 PM roycroft: that's pretty tight
05:05 PM roycroft: is this a tiny machine?
05:07 PM perry_j1987: i'll have to look at the old config when i go back out there and boot up the old controller
05:07 PM perry_j1987: its a taig mill
05:13 PM roycroft: ok, so pretty small
05:14 PM roycroft: most ball screws i see have a 5mm or 10mm pitch
05:20 PM _unreal_: so I'm looking at playing with this https://github.com/misan/dcservo or this https://github.com/paukstelis/dcservo
05:57 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L,
06:00 PM JT-Shop: it's on the truck!
06:01 PM Tom_L: yay!
06:13 PM JT-Shop: Phil is going to call me first thing in the morning with an ETA so I can be there when the truck arrives
06:13 PM JT-Shop: better go tell the boss what's up
07:27 PM perry_j1987: hmm https://pastebin.com/Stf7VfBB trying to get that or2 working
07:27 PM perry_j1987: had it working on the other box
07:27 PM perry_j1987: got two probes one in pin 12 and one in pin 11
07:35 PM perry_j1987: i remembered addf or2.0 base-thread this time lol
07:36 PM perry_j1987: i can see the green led on the touch probe light up and it turns red soon as i touch the probe so it should be working heh
07:38 PM skunkworks[m]: isn't it awesome? when you start figuring it all out? The light bulb goes off?
07:38 PM skunkworks[m]: or on? whatever
07:39 PM perry_j1987: well its not working lol
07:39 PM perry_j1987: hal meter does not show activity for either pin 11 or 12
07:39 PM skunkworks[m]: oh.. LOL.. sorry
07:43 PM skunkworks[m]: so - look at signal probe-in-11 and probe-in-12 and see if they are doing what you think..
07:43 PM skunkworks[m]: off - I am so slow tonight
07:43 PM skunkworks[m]: how are they hooked into the printer port?
07:44 PM skunkworks[m]: oof
07:45 PM perry_j1987: going to take apart my little plug i made to investigate
07:52 PM perry_j1987: ok everything is plugged right it seems. if i trip the touch probe i see 12v on the input
07:52 PM perry_j1987: if i trip the tool height setter i see 5v on the input
08:17 PM skunkworks[m]: What are you using for a bob?
08:19 PM perry_j1987: took apart my pigtail cord going to rewire it
08:19 PM perry_j1987: prob had issue in there
08:22 PM Tom_L: skunkworks[m], you finish the lathe conversion?
08:23 PM skunkworks[m]: No . Getting closer.. but life
08:23 PM Tom_L: yeah... teaching kids how to mow etc :)
08:29 PM skunkworks[m]: exacly. nurturing.. it is a full time job.
08:58 PM * roycroft wonders if a youngling with a cell phone and a mower is more or less dangerous than a youngling with a cell phone and a lathe
08:59 PM XXCoder: I never see anyone mow with phone here
08:59 PM XXCoder: not that I often even see them mow
09:21 PM Unterhaus_: does freecad let you do animations where you change parameters, like a dimension?
09:34 PM GTKplusplus[m] is now known as gtkplusplus0[m]
09:58 PM skunkworks[m]: My youngest who is 8 - isn't heavy enough to activate the deadmans switch on the seat. He was upset about that.
09:59 PM skunkworks[m]: Also that he couldn't be in the yard when Stella was mowing.
10:12 PM Tom_L: Unterhaus_, wouldn't that be more like formulas for dimensions?
10:14 PM Unterhaus_: I just saw a video where some dimensions changed
10:14 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jze6ftGc6BQ
10:14 PM Tom_L: mind you, i don't use freecad so i really don't know what it's capable of
10:14 PM Tom_L: but any good cad should be able to simulate
10:15 PM Unterhaus_: https://youtu.be/IA6-4vniGZo
10:16 PM XXCoder: interesting
10:16 PM Tom_L: takes quite a bit to get to that point
10:17 PM Tom_L: constraints etc need to be carfully planned out
10:17 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
10:18 PM Unterhausen: yeah, I asked him how he made the video, but since he sells a cad program maybe he's not going to tell me :)
10:18 PM Unterhausen: but his cad already exports to freecad
10:19 PM Tom_L: some programs translate imports better than others too
10:19 PM Tom_L: iges works better in catia than solidworks
10:19 PM Tom_L: as an example
10:20 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't think he'd have anything to hide if he's selling it. that would just be promoting ti
10:21 PM Tom_L: it
10:22 PM Tom_L: videos of a product are meant to dazzle ya anyway
10:45 PM Unterhausen: the video is of whatever cad he's using, I think freecad
10:46 PM Unterhausen: his cad is just 2d. Very useful though
10:46 PM Unterhausen: no reason to design a bicycle in 3d
