12:25 AM Deejay: moin
04:27 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:28 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning ☕️
05:41 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
05:52 AM Tom_L: morning
06:04 AM JT-Cave: we had a good time on the mystery ride yesterday
07:12 AM JT-Cave: Loetmichel, do you or anyone else on here mess with laser engravers?
07:24 AM solarwind: You know how sometimes you just have to sand a wooden object by hand because a belt sander or bench grinder or whatever is wayyyyy too "fast"
07:24 AM solarwind: That is, if you apply too much pressure for a split second, you'll cut off too much material
07:25 AM solarwind: Is there any kind of very low speed belt sander?
07:25 AM solarwind: I know I can just modify mine, but I'm wondering what people actually use
07:26 AM solarwind: For example, putting the final finishing ultra sharp edge on a knife. A waterstone takes a bit too long, but there's no way in hell I'd take it to a bench grinder even with a super fine CBN wheel
07:26 AM solarwind: It's more about reducing the manual labour actually, it's not that sanding or grinding or filing by hand is too slow
07:27 AM solarwind: Something that operates at the same surface speed as you would when doing it manually, but machine powered
07:33 AM * JT-Shop really needs to clean up the machine shop
07:39 AM JT-Cave: every laser engraver I look at has a large number of 1 star ratings with 0 customer support and DOA
07:50 AM Unterhausen: what does roycroft have?
07:59 AM JT-Cave: not sure
09:08 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I have one of these: https://omtechlaser.com/collections/mid-range-co2-laser-engravers/products/80w-co2-laser-engraver-cutter-usb-8r57-us Works great.
09:09 AM JT-Cave: looks nice but a bit big
09:11 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Are you looking for a portable one? Most of those are crap until you get to the $$$$$ end of the spectrum with a fiber laser.
09:11 AM JT-Cave: looking for a hobby one I think
09:12 AM JT-Cave: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/48369-optiplex-755?start=20#271622
09:27 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, lightburn software and https://www.xtool.com/products/portable-diode-laserbox-d1-for-laser-engraving-laser-cutting i think
09:28 AM Tom_L: also got a 20w head for it iirc
09:29 AM Tom_L: Mar 22 09:48:07 <perry_j1987> what one did you get
09:29 AM Tom_L: Mar 22 09:51:44 <roycroft> xtool d1 pro
09:35 AM JT-Shop: thanks
09:38 AM JT-Shop: lightburn is the same software the guy I met yesterday uses
09:40 AM Tom_L: not sure what goggles he has
09:55 AM * JT-Shop just blew his debit card limit on a pair of Jabra Enhance 200's
10:16 AM travis_farmer[m]: Mmmm, lunch is being prepared... baked chicken, sweet corn dripping in butter, and potato, also dripping in butter. :-)
11:33 AM roguish[m]: JT-Shop: how / why did you pick the Jabra aids? curious, as I'm seriously looking too
11:38 AM Unterhaus_: what is "amt in bios"?
11:38 AM Unterhaus_: active management
11:38 AM Unterhaus_: Wish I could disable on my computers
11:43 AM Unterhaus_: where is PCW getting more recent kernels?
11:45 AM Unterhaus_: latency threads on forum haven't been updated since 2013. Maybe should unsticky them
11:55 AM JT-Shop: roguish[m], my younger sister has some and I tried them out, she has the cosco branded ones
11:58 AM JT-Shop: Unterhaus_, he compiles them
11:59 AM Unterhaus_: I was afraid of that. I guess RodW is only up to 6.3
12:09 PM Unterhaus_: if I wanted to test network latency, I would just use ping?
12:39 PM roycroft: icmp is not a good test of network latency
12:39 PM roycroft: many devices, when busy, process icmp at lower priority than udp and tcp
12:39 PM roycroft: (ping uses icmp, of course)
12:59 PM travis_farmer[m]: thermo says 92F... so much for working on anything outside... (i wilt in hot weather...) :-(
12:59 PM JT-Shop: roy
01:00 PM Unterhaus_: I just mentioned ping because I recall PCW is using it
01:00 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, does lightburn have any settings for surface color?
01:02 PM JT-Shop: the guy I met yesterday mentioned he tried a few pieces of wood and only the first one worked well... I know not much to go on but it was a quick conversation
01:03 PM JT-Shop: https://ortur.net/collections/laser-engraving-machine/products/aufero-laser-2
01:03 PM JT-Shop: that's the machine he has
01:09 PM roycroft: i don't know if lightburn has specific settings for surface color
01:09 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHrsfF9rbKw
01:09 PM roycroft: i'm assuming you're talking about coloring metals
01:09 PM JT-Shop: wood
01:10 PM roycroft: oh
01:10 PM JT-Shop: different species of wood
01:10 PM roycroft: that's why you make test cards
01:10 PM JT-Shop: seems the first one he tried worked great but not some other species he had on hand
01:11 PM roycroft: yeah, you have to test with each species
01:11 PM JT-Shop: ok
01:11 PM roycroft: https://omtechlaser.com/pages/downloads
01:11 PM roycroft: there are a couple test card files there that work great with lightburn
01:12 PM roycroft: lightburn itself has a rudimentary test card tool
01:13 PM roycroft: but since you can download a better one for free i'd do that
01:13 PM JT-Shop: makes sense
01:13 PM JT-Shop: you ended up with an xTool?
01:13 PM roycroft: yes
01:13 PM roycroft: and i'm pretty happy with it
01:13 PM JT-Shop: which one did you get?
01:13 PM roycroft: i bought it with a 5w laser, because that has the highest resolution
01:13 PM roycroft: d1 pro
01:14 PM JT-Shop: I no longer have access to the one at revere plastics
01:14 PM roycroft: but i just got a 20w laser head for it, and i'm happy with the resolution of the 20w
01:14 PM roycroft: and it's way faster than the 5w
01:14 PM JT-Shop: https://www.xtool.com/products/portable-diode-laserbox-d1-for-laser-engraving-laser-cutting
01:14 PM roycroft: they have a 40w laser for it, but i wasn't interested
01:15 PM JT-Shop: 40w mostly for cutting?
01:15 PM roycroft: it's very expensive, requires a new system board, and just doesn't seem like it would be a good value for me
01:15 PM roycroft: yeah
01:15 PM roycroft: although i just cut some 5mm birch ply with the 20w in two passes
01:15 PM roycroft: which is good enough for me
01:15 PM JT-Shop: did you get the air assist?
01:15 PM roycroft: not theirs
01:16 PM roycroft: i got the same pump for about half the price on amazon
01:16 PM JT-Shop: got a link to that?
01:16 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XM9Y89D/
01:17 PM roycroft: it's the exact same pump
01:17 PM JT-Shop: where does it blow air?
01:17 PM roycroft: the xtool laser head comes with an air inlet at the nozzle
01:17 PM roycroft: also
01:18 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BCG2T8JR/
01:18 PM roycroft: that is the oem honeycomb panel for the xtool, at about 1/2 the xtool price
01:18 PM JT-Shop: thanks
01:18 PM roycroft: i like the xtool product
01:18 PM roycroft: but i would not buy accessories from them
01:19 PM roycroft: focusing the xtool laser is really fast and easy
01:19 PM JT-Shop: thanks
01:19 PM JT-Shop: does it use a spacer?
01:19 PM roycroft: it has a lever on the side of the laser head
01:19 PM roycroft: you flip it donw, lower the laser until it touches the part, then flip it backup
01:20 PM JT-Shop: nice
01:20 PM roycroft: so no spacer to misplace
01:20 PM JT-Shop: did you get a rotary?
01:20 PM roycroft: the 20w also has an additional depth settin
01:20 PM roycroft: you can adjust the focus by up to 6mm lower, for multi-pass cutting
01:20 PM roycroft: i did not get the rotary yet
01:20 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about it
01:20 PM roycroft: folks seem to really like the xtool one
01:20 PM JT-Shop: is there one on amazon?
01:20 PM roycroft: rotary?
01:21 PM JT-Shop: aye
01:21 PM roycroft: only theirs, i think
01:21 PM JT-Shop: ok
01:21 PM roycroft: but amazon prices are often cheaper than their website
01:21 PM JT-Shop: ok
01:21 PM roycroft: and there tend to be significant coupons on amazon - i got $100 off my laser when i bough ti
01:21 PM roycroft: and i also got $100 off on the 20w head when i bought that
01:21 PM JT-Shop: there's $50 off atm on their web site but I'll check amazon
01:22 PM roycroft: yeah, check both
01:22 PM roycroft: xtool have a lightburn plugin, so it's trivial to get it working with lightburn
01:23 PM roycroft: you need the xtool software for firmware upgrades and for a couple of the settings, but other than that the bundled software is useless
01:23 PM JT-Shop: that's good to know
01:24 PM roycroft: i don't regret getting the 5w laser, and i haven't tried the 20w on leather yet
01:24 PM roycroft: the 5w is perfect for leather - it cuts it easily, and is very high resolution
01:25 PM roycroft: but for wood i think i'll mostly use the 20w
01:26 PM roycroft: i'm heading out to work in the garden shortly, so if you have any more questions, now is the time (or much later is the time)
01:26 PM JT-Shop: ok
01:26 PM JT-Shop: thanks for the info
01:26 PM JT-Shop: I'm going to make some chicken dirt
01:26 PM JT-Shop: before it gets too hot outside
01:59 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (524KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/erwllCrJcejdEjBRLKEIjOUH/20230528_135535.jpg >
02:27 PM Tom_L: 502
02:29 PM JT-Shop: I guess the matrix is borked again
02:29 PM Tom_L: same with the previous one you did
02:29 PM Tom_L: maybe yesterday?
02:31 PM JT-Shop: different photo...
02:31 PM * JT-Shop sharpens a knife to disassemble a chicken
02:36 PM Tom_L: pleasantly surprised i got a quick response on an android app i'm interested in
02:38 PM JT-Shop: cool
03:12 PM JT-Shop: what app?
05:29 PM Tom_L: for sending bulk sms
05:31 PM JT[m]: Travis_farmer did you see the C2 in my photo
05:31 PM Tom_L: so is the C5 gonna find a new zipcode soon?
05:32 PM Tom_L: now that app guy is making a video just for me to see how some features work
05:42 PM Tom_L: i liked the body style of the earlier ones
06:42 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:44 PM XXCoder: so anything fun happen while my pc was testing hard drive?
06:45 PM XXCoder: nice pic jt
06:45 PM XXCoder: feeder table is what you made a while ago right? good to see it work well
07:04 PM XXCoder: very nice artisan make
07:20 PM XXCoder: roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RySMTEc-e4 lol would be interesting artwork to cover stuff and burn off uncovered rust

08:52 PM Tom_L: matrix has been borked a while on files
08:52 PM XXCoder: ah no wonder bridge from irc to discord isnt working. though url worked for me
08:53 PM Tom_L: didn't get JT's earlier either
10:10 PM xxcoder[m]: seen on discord but not irc
10:10 PM xxcoder[m]: discord comment seen on irc
11:08 PM roycroft: i'm not a fan of discord
11:08 PM roycroft: i prefer harmony
11:09 PM XXCoder: lol
