02:31 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning ☕️
02:49 AM Deejay: moin
03:23 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:00 AM XXCoder: wow early blonditech video
04:01 AM XXCoder: (well sat still but usually during day not 2 am)
04:01 AM XXCoder: oh wait that was last week
04:33 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:38 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:40 AM Tom_L: morning
04:40 AM TurBoss: Hello
04:41 AM Tom_L: is there a standard for the depth of a flat on a shaft?
04:42 AM Tom_L: D profile...
04:43 AM Tom_L: seems most are the radius length across the flat
04:46 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:47 AM JT-Cave: prob something in the machinist handbook
04:47 AM Tom_L: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/d-profile-precision-shafts/d-profile-rotary-shafts-5/
04:50 AM Tom_L: key provides better radial loads over a D shaft - grub screw
05:33 AM JT-Cave: going on a mystery ride today with the Corvettes of Southeast Missouri club
05:34 AM JT-Cave: I was filling up about a month ago and saw a C7 filling up so I started a conversation with the lady and she told me about the club so I joined as it was pretty cheap
05:34 AM XXCoder: whats club about
05:34 AM JT-Cave: turns out they do quite a few things during the summer
05:34 AM JT-Cave: corvette owners
05:35 AM JT-Cave: https://www.corvettesofsoutheastmissouri.com/
05:35 AM XXCoder: interesting
05:36 AM JT-Cave: I never knew anything about it until I walked up to that lady and started a conversation
05:36 AM travis_farmer[m]: my father used to have a 64 corvette stingray (convertible)
05:37 AM JT-Cave: hmm C3?
05:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: i don't know the model, and he is still sleeping
05:38 AM travis_farmer[m]: i wonder if i can find the picture...
05:38 AM JT-Cave: https://www.corvsport.com/1964-corvette-options/
05:39 AM JT-Cave: wow that's a C2
05:39 AM XXCoder: there was deaf club here but its more or less dead
05:39 AM XXCoder: everyone too busy
05:40 AM JT-Cave: that sucks
05:40 AM JT-Cave: but I can relate to being busy in the past
05:41 AM XXCoder: its pretty old club. my dad was member of it for many years
05:41 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
05:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: couldn't find picture, but he just got up and confirmed the match with the picture of the C2, though it was blue
05:45 AM travis_farmer[m]: he says it had a pretty hot engine, not sure if stock or not. he rebuilt the engine with just a craftsman ratchet set. my sister had ridden in it, as a baby. but he sold it before i was born.
05:50 AM JT-Cave: you could get a L36 or L68 427 in a C2
05:50 AM travis_farmer[m]: he says 327
05:55 AM JT-Cave: the 64 327 had either 350hp or 375hp so they got more hp per liter and my c5 5.4L vs 5.7L @350hp
05:58 AM travis_farmer[m]: i remember his saying when he first bought it, he was pulling out into traffic and hit the gas... nearly pulled a 360 in the road (by accident), and went about his way. i wish he had kept it, as the guy that bought it, couldn't handle the power and wrapped it around a tree...
05:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: had a 4-barrel Quadrajet carb. came with a holly, but he couldn't keep tires on it ;-)
06:05 AM JT-Cave: sounds like when my dad sold his Cessna 170 to some lady she could not handle a tail dragger well and ground looped it and totaled the plane
06:08 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: The 64 would have been 350 or 375hp gross and your C5 would be 350hp net. Subtract about 100hp from the gross number to get the approximate net. So the comparable numbers would be 250/275hp for the 64 and 350 for the C5.
06:09 AM JT-Cave: ah the numbers game with hp
06:14 AM JT-Cave: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c4-tech-performance/4118352-how-hp-is-measured-old-muscle-motors-don-t-have-quite-the-muscle-we-thought.html
06:19 AM * JT-Cave gets and early start to his chicken day
08:17 AM Jym: Morning
08:53 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
09:40 AM Toneloc83 is now known as Toneloc
09:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: there, took the trash to the town dump, and filled my truck's tank with $80 of gas (ouch)
10:01 AM Tom_L: tank got a hole in it?
10:02 AM travis_farmer[m]: no, why?
10:03 AM Tom_L: $80 why
10:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: gas prices are up for memorial day, and my tank was near empty
12:02 PM Unterhausen: Do prices go back down soon or not until fall?
12:02 PM Unterhausen: not that it really matters since I use about 20 gallons a year
12:03 PM travis_farmer[m]: no idea. they go up and down based on greed
12:09 PM roycroft: they will go up until fall
12:23 PM roycroft: we'll also be in the election cycle by fall, so they might stay high for another year after that
02:50 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:03 PM ziper2: would HSS make a decent flathead driver?
04:03 PM ziper2: the screwdrivers I have are too soft and those hex bits are too brittle
04:05 PM XXCoder: wouldnt you be able to harden them
04:24 PM roycroft: i'd use something like o2, shape it, then harden and temper it
04:24 PM roycroft: i question, though, an application where a properly-fitting screwdriver is too soft for the job at hand
04:25 PM roycroft: even when removing stubborn fasteners
04:25 PM roycroft: and chinese pot metal tools notwithstanding, of course
04:33 PM ziper2: its a rusty bolt and the hex head is now a round head
04:34 PM XXCoder: I saw video where guy welded a rod into rounded bolt and got it out by rotating it
04:58 PM roycroft: i would do this:
04:58 PM roycroft: 1. soak the fastener area in penetrating oil
04:58 PM roycroft: 2. wait a few hours
04:58 PM roycroft: 3. repeat steps 1 and 2 a couple or three times
04:59 PM roycroft: 4. cut a slot in the head of the bolt
04:59 PM roycroft: 5. put a slotted screwgun tip in a hammer drill, and set it to hammer only mode
04:59 PM roycroft: 6. pound on it for a few seconds in hammer mode, and then slowly twist the screwgun as you continue to hammer on the fastener
05:00 PM roycroft: in very many cases that will work
05:00 PM roycroft: i have a removal tool for an air chisel that lets me rotate the bit manually while hammering
05:01 PM roycroft: it's one of the most useful tools i have ever purchased/made
05:01 PM XXCoder: isnt there something that automatally rotate as you hammer on it?
05:02 PM roycroft: http://www.smithtoolsupply.com/Air-Tools/Air-Hammers/Air-Hammer-Accessories/WI-TH28000.html
05:02 PM roycroft: you don't want to automatically rotate it as you hammer on it
05:02 PM roycroft: you want a sensitive rotation, so you can feel it as you turn it
05:02 PM XXCoder: interesting
05:03 PM roycroft: honestly, if you deal with rusted/frozen fasteners on more than an occasional basis, that tool is the best $36 you'll ever spend
05:04 PM XXCoder: its not very expensive
05:04 PM roycroft: if you turn it automatically, xxcoder, you can easily twist the head off while the rest of the fastener is still frozen in place
05:04 PM roycroft: but when you turn it manually you can feel when it's ready to turn
05:04 PM roycroft: and you just keep hammering until it's ready
05:04 PM XXCoder: makes sense
05:05 PM roycroft: that tool has never not worked for me
05:06 PM roycroft: the only problem with it is that you can't go pick one up at a big box store when you need it
05:08 PM XXCoder: nice blondihack video so far
05:09 PM XXCoder: usually I get 4-5 machining videos each sat but this time its only one
05:12 PM Tom_L: ziper2, maybe cobalt but even then it's not for that purpose
05:13 PM Tom_L: thermite would remove it
05:13 PM ziper2: roycroft, where do you get high quality bits to put in there? the ones I try break too easily
05:14 PM XXCoder: oh good crimper tip in video
05:15 PM roycroft: i've had that particular tool for 20+ years, and have used it dozens, if not hundred of times, and i've never broken a bit
05:15 PM roycroft: but that's because it's always rotated manually
05:15 PM roycroft: if you're twisting it hard enough to break the bit you are risking twisting the head off the fastener
05:17 PM roycroft: and don't go hammering with 200psi pressure
05:17 PM roycroft: that can shatter the bit as well
05:17 PM roycroft: dial it down to 75-90psi
05:18 PM * roycroft heads back out to do some more yard work
05:23 PM XXCoder: fun video
05:23 PM XXCoder: learned some stuff
05:28 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (198KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/edrRRomwVPlUXAFTZzjvIhAV/20230527_102111.jpg >
05:31 PM XXCoder: interesting
05:40 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L5QC9ZJkM8
05:41 PM XXCoder: in least its very near miss lol
05:48 PM JT-Shop: ed ames died the other day at 95
06:56 PM roycroft: wow - i've never seen this before
06:57 PM roycroft: i just got on my cell phone to see if i had a voicemail, because i'm expecting a call from one of our directors, and was away from the phone for a bit
06:58 PM roycroft: when i went to the phone app there was no new voicemail, but before i could exit safari opened and i got some comcast spam imploring me to upgrade to business class service
06:58 PM roycroft: this was while i was not touching the phone
06:58 PM roycroft: i think we all know my answer to their plea :)
06:58 PM XXCoder: either that app did a ad, or you have a concerning issye
06:59 PM roycroft: it has something to do with monkeys and my butt
06:59 PM roycroft: i think comcast and apple have something going on
07:01 PM roycroft: anyway, i got a lot of yard work done today
07:01 PM roycroft: enough that one of my neighbors actualy waved at me and smiled
07:03 PM XXCoder: ugh need to get to that vines again soonish
07:04 PM roycroft: and i've decided to just sand off all the paint on my laser enclosure and start over, with the lower grade paint that i know works well
07:04 PM roycroft: i'm going to start the sanding tonight
07:04 PM roycroft: what a waste of time that was
07:04 PM roycroft: not to mention the expens
07:04 PM roycroft: e
07:04 PM roycroft: but the time was the bigger issue
07:05 PM XXCoder: it got pitted right?
07:05 PM roycroft: yeah
07:05 PM roycroft: really badly
07:05 PM roycroft: i'm going to go back to the old method
07:05 PM roycroft: flat color paint, rolled on
07:05 PM roycroft: sanded lightly, then sprayed with clear coat
07:05 PM roycroft: i was trying to streamline the process and instead spent more time and got results that are not acceptable even for a shop fixture
07:06 PM roycroft: the primer sprayed on brilliantly
07:06 PM roycroft: and there was a significant time saving there
07:06 PM roycroft: so i'll probably spray primer on again after i sand, assuming i sand through much of the original primer
07:06 PM roycroft: which i assume i'll end up doing
07:07 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to spray the color
07:09 PM XXCoder: lol ok
07:09 PM XXCoder: hopefully it will be fine
07:10 PM roycroft: so texas republicans impeached their state attorney general today
07:10 PM roycroft: he's pushing back, claiming they're trying to prevent him from going after president biden's agenda
07:10 PM roycroft: in what universe would texas republicans try to stop someone from going after biden?
07:11 PM * roycroft is confused again
07:11 PM roycroft: it will be fine, i'm sure, xxcoder, because i'll be using materials and methods i've used many times before
07:12 PM XXCoder: ok
07:20 PM XXCoder: lol https://youtu.be/kpaca7ARsjg
07:20 PM XXCoder: guy makes a tiny books
07:45 PM roycroft: speaking of tiny things
07:45 PM roycroft: i hope the tiny hat people are back at the fair this year
07:45 PM roycroft: they weren't there last year
07:45 PM roycroft: and i want a tiny hat
07:50 PM Tom_L: reminds me of the styrofoam cup dropped to the deeps of the ocean and brought back up
07:50 PM Tom_L: the size of a thimble
08:11 PM roycroft: tiny hats are about that size
08:12 PM roycroft: well, bigger than a thimble
08:13 PM roycroft: but not that much bigger
08:13 PM * roycroft just hopes they're back this year
08:13 PM roycroft: the first year we had them was 2019
08:13 PM roycroft: and then there was no fair in 2020 and 2021
08:13 PM roycroft: and they were not there last year, but about 1/3 of the booths were not there last year
