03:54 AM Loetmichel_ is now known as Loetmichel
04:24 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning ☕️
04:40 AM Tom_L: morning
05:11 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:12 AM JT-Cave: 53°F
05:13 AM travis_farmer[m]: 44F with a high of 67F
05:15 AM travis_farmer[m]: had 3 deer on the lawn this morning :-)
05:16 AM JT-Cave: nice
05:16 AM JT-Cave: mine come at dinner time
05:17 AM travis_farmer[m]: from out of the freezer, to the dinner table? ;-)
05:18 AM JT-Cave: feeder goes off at 5pm
05:44 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
06:05 AM JT-Cave: just for fun I looked at waze and their map of my area is totally wrong
07:00 AM NoGodDamnIdea: hello yall

08:37 AM mits5782[m]: what do people name their machines?
08:37 AM mits5782[m]: I know it can be just about anything, I have no clue what to name it and that's troubling 😄
08:40 AM mits5782[m]: I wonder if you actually have to name it
08:46 AM * Lcvette[m] uploaded a video: (18880KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/EiRqzWRJBheRIcJPDoJaCVPZ/VID_20230521_200318593.mp4 >
08:49 AM Lcvette[m]: forgive the messy shop
08:49 AM Lcvette[m]: i just finished that build up in one day
08:51 AM Lcvette[m]: i was getting bogged down with the hand pump 20 ton press for doing dozens of keyways in all of the pulleies in the kits, so i matchbook designed this contraption from an air cylinder and some scrap steel from the loacal yard
08:52 AM CloudEvil: :)
08:52 AM Lcvette[m]: * i was getting bogged down with the hand pump 20 ton press for doing dozens of keyways in all of the pulleies in the kits, so i matchbook designed this contraption from an air cylinder and some scrap steel from the local metal supply drop yard.
08:52 AM CloudEvil: I do hope you're wearing appropriate protection
08:53 AM CloudEvil: As shit goes wrong, you get bits of that broach coming off at a fair chunk of the speed of sound.
08:54 AM Lcvette[m]: all in im about $110 in materials and parts.
08:54 AM CloudEvil: :)
08:55 AM Lcvette[m]: CloudEvil: eye protection and typical shop attire
08:55 AM CloudEvil: I'd go rather beyond eye protection for that.
08:55 AM Lcvette[m]: boots, jeans, tshirt
08:57 AM Lcvette[m]: but a swing in plexiglass door isn't a bad idea
08:58 AM Lcvette[m]: i am however going to modify this i thing and add a hydraulic bleeder ram to modulate the speed of the piston when it "breaks free" between teeth
09:00 AM Lcvette[m]: the exhaust valve isn't working in this scenario so well because the pressure balance bleeds off between teeth stalls and then it really shoots down
09:02 AM CloudEvil: That would help a fair bit to reduce the likelyhood of bit breakage
09:04 AM Lcvette[m]: hydraulic ram would be better, and i may down the line convert it over if i find a small hydraulic pump, i imagine i could use this air cylinder still since i do not really need more than 130pounds of pressure in it to function as i intend to use it.
10:41 AM JT-Cave: if you can find an air hydraulic pump that would work
10:45 AM roguish[m]: pneumatic is ok. just should have something besides a plain on/off valve. even a flow control / speed valve on the inlet might help. would slow things down. not quite as explosive....
10:49 AM * JT-Cave goes to do a little work... very little work
11:28 AM norias: hi
12:36 PM roycroft: does anyone else here get fake comcast scam calls?
12:36 PM roycroft: i endure an almost constant barrage of them on weekdays, and i'm slightly curious about what the scam is
12:36 PM travis_farmer[m]: mostly Spectrum fakes in my area...
12:36 PM roycroft: but the calls never last that long
12:36 PM roycroft: when they started out, i'd hear "welcome to comcast" before hanging up
12:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: i get real scam Comcast calls and scammy calls from Comcast
12:37 PM roycroft: then it went to "welcome to com", "welcome to", "welcome", and now it doesn't get past "wel" before i disconnect
12:37 PM roycroft: so i've never heard the whole pitch
12:38 PM roycroft: i get 3-4 of them per day on weekdays on each of my phone lines (i currently have 4 voice lines)
12:38 PM roycroft: so it's a bit more than annoying
12:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the recent Comcast pitch is some service for X dollars per month BUT it's actually $20 more per month since you have to rent their modem and pay for security theater that runs on the cloud
12:38 PM roycroft: it's almost constant interruptions
12:39 PM roycroft: i don't get any legitimate calls from comcast
12:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: haven't heard what the third part scams are
12:39 PM roycroft: scammy or otherwise
12:39 PM roycroft: these are all fake third-party "comcast" scams
12:39 PM roycroft: maybe some day i'll be bored and not hang up right away
12:40 PM roycroft: it just seems to me that if you're going to try to scam somebody by pretending to sell them some service, posing as 'comast' is not an effective way to get a person to part with their cc number or banking information
12:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's pretty easy to find stupid people
12:42 PM * roycroft got the fourth call of the day a few minutes ago, which is why he asked the question
12:42 PM roycroft: and it's not even 11:00 yet
12:43 PM Tom_L: they had to make up for the weekend
12:44 PM roycroft: i get the occasional fake comcast scam call on my residential line over the weekend
12:44 PM roycroft: possibly on the business lines as well, but they don't ring outside business hours
12:44 PM roycroft: and they scam calls never leave voicemails
12:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: always ask for their number so that you can call them back if disconnected
12:46 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: I don't get too many bad calls these days, but i'm getting a truck load of shit emails......
12:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: then hang up
12:46 PM Tom_L: roycroft,
12:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ask them for their shoe size for security verification
12:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: then argue that they are wrong and that you have their records right here
12:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: argue over anything that they bring up
12:52 PM travis_farmer[m]: i used to have a friend that would ask them extremely personal questions, until they hung up
12:53 PM travis_farmer[m]: questions that would make a prostitute blush...
12:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: treat them like a phone sex line
01:29 PM skunkworks[m]: lol - I just hang up
01:35 PM roycroft: were you chatting with comcast?
01:46 PM skunkworks[m]: we have a local coop that does our internet at home. They are suprisingly amazing. Give them a call and 10 minutes later they are at your house.
01:48 PM skunkworks[m]: (when there is a problem - I haven't had them to the house in years) the neighbors wifi quit working. I called the cable company and expalined the problem - no wifi - can't get into the admin console of the modem.. The guy tried - said - are you going to be there for about 15 minutes? I said yes- they came and replaced the hardware.
01:52 PM JT-Shop: for me it's file a ticket and wait a month
01:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Comcast has us paying an extra $20 a month for a service that we don't use since we have the modem in bridge mode and this mode doesn't support the cloud security theater they make us have
03:31 PM Unterhaus_: notepad++ gcode plugin looks really nice
03:42 PM mits5782[m]: Does the axis UI give you a way to set machine coordinates manually.... I understand that this is not a normal thing and not a safe thing, I'm just trying to test my step drivers without the axis actually moving (spinning in the air) and so homing won't happen
03:45 PM mits5782[m]: I have the NO_FORCE_HOMING set, but then the machine coords think they are outside the safe zone, so I need to move it...
03:46 PM mits5782[m]: I could jog to fix it, but I'm curious if I can just set my machine coords to a value
04:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://throwedrolls.com/
04:20 PM JT-Shop: the rolls are good... only been once and that was enough
04:20 PM roycroft: i wish restaurants would cut out the "generous portions" crap
04:21 PM roycroft: the average portion size of a restaurant meal has grown proportionately with the increase in obesity in this country
04:21 PM roycroft: in inflationary times it would seem to me that reducing the portion size would both same consumers money and help reduce obesity
04:23 PM XXCoder: price scales up faster than food cost increase
04:24 PM XXCoder: so not surpised.
04:24 PM XXCoder: random example, food price 2x increase vs food cost
04:24 PM XXCoder: its similiar to why houses is all big nowdays. house material and labor scales much slower than house sale price for certain size
04:25 PM roycroft: houses are bigger because we're 'muricans, and like big things
04:26 PM roycroft: and we all have big pickups and suvs to drive around town
04:26 PM roycroft: those big vehicles would look funny in front of a small house
04:28 PM Unterhaus_: there are some scammers that don't understand my taste in tools very well, the say they are from harbor freight
04:28 PM Unterhaus_: and then offer me some stanley tools
04:28 PM XXCoder: in old hardline phone days, people calling me would get digital noises from my tty
04:29 PM XXCoder: it deters scammers pretty hard.
04:29 PM XXCoder: nowdays i hav vp phone and phone, not a lot of scam calls on either
04:30 PM JT-Woodshop: smaller portions won't make obese people loose weight... they will just order 3 times as much
04:31 PM XXCoder: just tighten up the weight
04:31 PM XXCoder: it'd be great then ;)
04:31 PM JT-Woodshop: lol
04:31 PM roycroft: it won't help people lose weight, at least not by much
04:31 PM roguish[m]: Unterhaus_: notepad++ gcode, is that for linux, or just windows?
04:31 PM roycroft: but it does help prevent weight gain
04:31 PM roycroft: that's been studied and proven
04:32 PM Unterhaus_: they released a package for windows
04:32 PM XXCoder: mcd meal equals to day and half carbs for average person
04:32 PM roguish[m]: ah, ok, there is a way to run it in linux. i think it runs on wine....
04:33 PM roguish[m]: been using notepad++ for like 20 years.... definitely great
04:33 PM roguish[m]: and frree.
04:33 PM * JT-Shop goes to make some chicken crack
04:33 PM roguish[m]: good chicky dad
04:33 PM Unterhaus_: notepad++ works for linux, right?
04:34 PM roguish[m]: I believe it can
04:34 PM roycroft: i've been using vi/nvi for over 40 years
04:34 PM XXCoder: dunno I just use xed
04:34 PM roycroft: it works fine for me
04:34 PM roycroft: and comes with most *nix and *nix-like distros
04:34 PM XXCoder: was thinking of replacing xed really. I hate how it stalls when I start typing one charactor in search and it tries to find and highlight all of em
04:34 PM roguish[m]: https://www.howtogeek.com/867350/notepad-plus-plus-on-linux/
04:34 PM Unterhaus_: on the french language forum discussing the plugin, someone is using it with lcnc
04:34 PM XXCoder: it handles large files very badly
04:35 PM Unterhaus_: notepad++ has context sensitive highlighting for a lot of languages, it's awesome
04:35 PM roguish[m]: well, shit howdy. finally got my power draw bar installed and working...
04:37 PM XXCoder: syn
04:38 PM XXCoder: notepadqq seems to be clone of notepad++
04:43 PM XXCoder: notepadqq looks pretty good, though last update seem to be 2019
04:44 PM Unterhaus_: I didn't realize notepad++ wasn't cross-platform
04:44 PM Unterhaus_: open source though
04:44 PM Unterhaus_: maybe not
04:45 PM XXCoder: yeah. i'll go with it a while and see if its better than xed
04:45 PM XXCoder: xed is well done besides from those stupid problems I menioned
04:52 PM * JT-Woodshop can't stand context sensitive highlighting because it's always wrong a lot
04:53 PM Unterhaus_: it depends on who wrote it, I think it works well
04:53 PM XXCoder: usually was fine for me also
04:54 PM Unterhaus_: notepad++ context sensitive highlighting is pretty good and it's easy to change
05:06 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (275KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/CrGpNpxCKYlFbabyDXPyjMpE/20230522_170601.jpg >
05:07 PM XXCoder: you keep a very clean shop. floor in least
05:07 PM JT[m]: Trying to remember how I moved that table last time
05:08 PM Tom_L: <Unterhaus_> notepad++ gcode plugin... link?
05:09 PM Unterhaus_: here is the github
05:09 PM Unterhaus_: https://github.com/NCalu/NCneticNpp
05:44 PM JT[m]: With the wheels all pointing the same way it moves easy
05:45 PM XXCoder: I felt that was the case and unlocked, but I also felt I probably missed something. guess not lol
05:50 PM JT-Woodshop: the top alone weighs 1,020 pounds it's 1" x 60" x 60"
05:50 PM XXCoder: that table would break my garage floor lol
05:51 PM XXCoder: it was made in 1948 and concerte depth probably was 2-3 inch
05:51 PM JT-Woodshop: the frame is 3" x 3" x 3/8" square tubing
05:51 PM JT-Woodshop: if it ever got rolling down hill you would never stop it lol
05:52 PM XXCoder: car driver to insurance "uh some table went down road and totaled my car"
05:54 PM JT-Woodshop: it would total a car if it was going any speed
05:54 PM JT-Woodshop: I'd bet it's north of 1,500 pounds
05:56 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (379KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/XjLYUjcnzOBMYQXccEQHxrBC/20230522_175601.jpg >
05:56 PM JT[m]: Still not totally happy with the layout
05:57 PM XXCoder: I would buy some wood and make wood chip barriers
05:57 PM XXCoder: with wheels on it
05:57 PM Loetmichel: well, i just went 860 km this weekend with a merc A160 with a bad drive shaft (driver side) had a few times with loud enough crunching noises that i thought "NOW the car will be totalled (and maybe my foot with it)... drove VERY defensive and tried to keep any hard load off the shaft :)
05:57 PM XXCoder: so you could position to limit chip flying off
05:57 PM XXCoder: lathe is good example of it
05:58 PM XXCoder: cheap way would be bnunch of pvc pipes and tarp
05:59 PM JT-Woodshop: the move is so I can use my dust collector with the lathe
05:59 PM JT-Woodshop: so chips and sanding dust go straight into the dust collector
05:59 PM XXCoder: ahh nice. I used something similiar when I used bridgestone mill
06:00 PM XXCoder: it got a hole when vacuum hold failed lol it slowed it enough to just fall down few feet away, would be much more dangerous.
06:01 PM XXCoder: it was annoying week before they upgraded the air tanks
06:01 PM XXCoder: from one big tank to 4
06:02 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (371KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/SqPiIxMvlpLpJXSDmzKURGAf/20230522_180214.jpg >
06:03 PM JT[m]: I have a bit of wood
06:03 PM XXCoder: very woody area
06:03 PM XXCoder: whats the metal thingies there? near bottom

06:04 PM JT[m]: Saw horses
06:05 PM XXCoder: ahh interesting. never saw that type
06:05 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (370KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/jSkBxdgyjkaQymjinSzGlQuP/20230522_180139.jpg >
06:05 PM JT[m]: More wood lol
06:05 PM XXCoder: yep. well stacked wood. I guess those with gaps is still drying
06:06 PM JT-Woodshop: folding saw horses
06:06 PM JT-Woodshop: all the wood in the shop is dry and I leave the stickers so some air can flow around them
06:09 PM XXCoder: oh
06:24 PM Loetmichel: BTW: i was wondering if putting a few slabs of a tree VERTICAL to dry them out wouldnt be better/faster?
06:24 PM Loetmichel: or would that mean it warps like crazy?
06:25 PM XXCoder: dunno? i would think so, if it leans in any way
07:15 PM Tom_L: JT-Woodshop, what are the grey trianglie looking things in the pic?
07:15 PM Tom_L: oh.. don't park the vette in front of that table
07:16 PM Tom_L: i think i figured out what they are.. saw horse tops
07:16 PM Tom_L: ?
07:16 PM XXCoder: yeah it is, jt said so :
07:19 PM Tom_L: oh.. missed that part
07:54 PM Unterhaus_: people dry wood vertically. harder to stack that way though
07:56 PM Tom_L: is that because trees grow vertically?
07:57 PM Tom_L: i've always seen horizontal stacks
07:57 PM XXCoder: same
08:01 PM Tom_L: NCnetic 2.0 looks decent
10:38 PM roycroft: i dry wood horizontally, and i don't see how drying it vertically would work out well
10:38 PM roycroft: storing it that way can be ok, but only once it's dry
