12:52 AM Deejay: moin
04:40 AM Tom_L: morning
04:48 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:56 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:56 AM JT-Cave: rooster just crowed
05:56 AM EtherCatSadGuy[m is now known as JT3196[m]
09:03 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
09:13 AM fogl: hello
09:13 AM fogl: how can i "export debug=5"
09:13 AM fogl: is this for every hal module
09:13 AM fogl: or when i run halrun
09:13 AM fogl: ?
09:14 AM fogl: i tried all kind of options, but nothing works
09:24 AM AlexmagToast5525: Hi Guys, i build a new control panel for my CNC machine. I made an Video about the Project, that i'd like to share.
09:24 AM AlexmagToast5525: https://youtu.be/KNnIgD2FOmk
10:27 AM perry_j1987: hows it going
10:27 AM perry_j1987: have you guys played with chatgpt in regards to linuxcnc yet? :P
11:03 AM jpa-: perry_j1987: I have now, but I'm not impressed :) https://jpa.kapsi.fi/stuff/pix/chatgpt_linuxcnc.png
11:03 AM perry_j1987: you gotta lead it a little bit
11:04 AM perry_j1987: but still
11:04 AM perry_j1987: also gpt-4 is much much better than 3.5
11:04 AM Unterhausen: I tried asking bard about it and it was useless. Also tried asking about thread mills and got answers about treadmills
11:05 AM Unterhausen: I might try asking it programming questions again. Last time it told me it doesn't know how to program, but apparently it does now
11:06 AM Unterhausen: I have heard it's not nearly as good at programming as chatgpt, but I'm sure they are working on it
11:06 AM perry_j1987: bard does not do programing at all i thought
11:07 AM Unterhausen: they just announced it recently
11:08 AM Unterhausen: actually, it did help me with a python program before they announced it knew how to program. Then I changed my prompt a little and it said it didn't know how to program.
11:09 AM Unterhausen: there is an article about how chatgpt can program in such obscure languages as cobol and fortran
11:10 AM Unterhausen: I know a cobol programmer. It's boring, but pays the bills
11:11 AM Unterhausen: I have written some programs in cobol, it's the programming equivalent of running through molasses
11:15 AM perry_j1987: lol
11:44 AM roycroft: health insurance must be expensive for cobol coders
11:44 AM roycroft: since they need an annual operation for carpal tunnel syndrome
11:50 AM roycroft: time to attempt to shoot paint
11:50 AM roycroft: hopefully the latex will go as well as the primer
11:54 AM Unterhausen: my friend the cobol program works for a medical insurance company. There are big fines per minute if their system is offline
12:00 PM Unterhausen: I tried using a base thread with my new system and it seems like it reduces the jitter from 40us to 25us
12:00 PM Unterhausen: not as good as the slightly older system
12:01 PM Unterhausen: I should stop obsessing over it, 40 is more than good enough
12:42 PM Unterhausen: 2x2 costs more than a 2x4. I think I know why, but it still seems wrong
12:48 PM roycroft: so, more orange peel than with the kilz, but i think the second coat will turn out ok
12:48 PM roycroft: i used as much floetrol as i dared
12:48 PM roycroft: unterhausen: buy 2x6s and rip them in half
12:49 PM roycroft: cheap, and generally more straight than a 2x4 (if kiln dried), and definitely more straight than a 2x2, which seems to be designed to be pretzel wood
12:49 PM Unterhausen: I usually do that, but apparently pressure treated isn't as good when cut
12:49 PM roycroft: oh, i would not do that with pressure treated wood
12:50 PM Unterhausen: was hoping to skip the process
12:50 PM roycroft: but i shy away from that stuff
12:50 PM roycroft: if you rip pt wood it will turn into pretzel wood
12:50 PM Unterhausen: I have gotten much better at it, but a 2x2 probably would warp
12:51 PM roycroft: not to mention you lose the benefits of the treatment on the cut side, even if you slobber more pt treatment on it
12:51 PM Unterhausen: it looks pretty green in there, maybe they have gotten better at it
12:52 PM roycroft: i should move on to lawn work while the paint is drying
12:52 PM roycroft: my goal this week is to make the lawn look at least semi-respectable
12:52 PM Unterhausen: I am making a fence around my raised gardens. The posts don't touch the ground
12:52 PM roycroft: and to clean out some of the herb beds, at least enough to plant basil and get the mint under control
12:53 PM roycroft: speaking of which, looking at my mint plants i think that this weekend will be the official opening of mojito season for me!
12:53 PM roycroft: the mojito mint is almost ready for some light harvesting
12:53 PM * roycroft loves mojito season
12:53 PM roycroft: and it's going to get up to 34 on sunday
12:53 PM roycroft: a perfect day for a refresthing mojito (or mint julep)
01:27 PM Unterhausen: I'm stopping over for a mojito
01:27 PM Unterhausen: my mint is doing great. I need to go out and prune it so it doesn't escape the grow bag it's in
01:29 PM Unterhausen: I actually have 3 varieties of mint, plus oregano, which is in the mint family. My oregano in the raised gardens was doing so well I chopped it down
01:29 PM Unterhausen: meaning I cut off 1/3 of it so it didn't keep expanding
01:30 PM Unterhausen: there are mixed drinks that use oregano, but they aren't well known
01:36 PM travis_farmer[m]: well this has been an odd day... do i get booted now every time i close my eyes and take a nap?
01:37 PM Unterhausen: looks like you also get booted if you complain about getting booted
01:37 PM fogl: hello everybody, i am having problems with machinekit "rtapi_app_main(hal_pru_generic): -1 Operation not permitted". pru_generic.bin is owned by a root and have rw permissions only. Is this a problem?
01:38 PM Unterhausen: that's not good, I'm curious if anyone here knows enough about machinekit to help you
01:42 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:51 PM Unterhausen: somehow I thought you could copy from hexchat, guess not
01:52 PM Tom_L: why not?
01:52 PM Tom_L: just hilite the txt and it's in the buffer
01:53 PM Unterhausen: I want to paste fogl's error message into google, not working
01:53 PM Unterhausen: using winders, I suppose that's the problem
01:53 PM Tom_L: no
01:53 PM Tom_L: "rtapi_app_main(hal_pru_generic): -1 Operation not permitted"
01:53 PM Tom_L: just like that
01:54 PM Unterhausen: i don't want to paste it into hexchat
01:54 PM Tom_L: right click and paste wherever you please then
01:54 PM Unterhausen: anyway, I had a memory of fogl's problem and I think it's here https://groups.google.com/g/machinekit/c/9pemD4eTA1Y
01:55 PM Unterhausen: there is no copy in hexchat right click
01:55 PM Tom_L: highlite the text and it's copied. to paste right click and paste
01:55 PM Unterhausen: doesn't work. turns out there is a copy option in the right click menu though
01:55 PM Tom_L: left mouse button hilites the txt
01:56 PM Tom_L: couldn't be easier
01:57 PM Unterhausen: okay, thanks. My mistake was trying to use ctrl-c
01:58 PM Unterhausen: fogl did you see my link?
01:58 PM Unterhausen: I was surprised by how many machinekit users there were at the lcnc meetup
01:59 PM Tom_L: using what controllers?
01:59 PM Unterhausen: beaglebone
01:59 PM Unterhausen: pocketnc has their own board
02:00 PM Tom_L: what about their support community?
02:00 PM Unterhausen: that sits on the beaglebone. The other machine there that used it had their own board with a beaglebone too, IIRC
02:00 PM Tom_L: must be lacking or they wouldn't be showing up here
02:00 PM roycroft: my paint is leveling nicely
02:00 PM Unterhausen: it was all people working for companies
02:01 PM roycroft: while expensive, i really love floetrol - it's a wonderful product
02:01 PM Unterhausen: machinekit-hal seems to be active. I don't really understand the whole machinekit universe any more. The original project and mailing list is abandoned
02:01 PM roycroft: unfortunately the paint i chose for the exterior of the enclosure is a high gloss enamel, and floetrol will soften the shine a bit if i use too much
02:02 PM Tom_L: we kept a gallon of 'flattener' so we could make our own sheen
02:03 PM Unterhausen: I doubt I will ever use my beaglebone black for anything, seems to be too much effort
02:03 PM Tom_L: really had to mix it up good
02:04 PM Unterhausen: I like beaglebones, too bad about the video. If only TI knew how to make a video chip
02:05 PM roycroft: it's easy to flatten paint
02:06 PM roycroft: and something most folks don't realize is that you only need to flatten the final coat, be it paint or a clear finish
02:07 PM roycroft: and yeah, when you add flattener, you pretty much need to continuously mix it, even while applying it
02:08 PM Tom_L: i don't even think the company we got our finishes from is around anymore
02:09 PM Tom_L: out of Dallas
02:10 PM Tom_L: they sold to somebody and i don't remember the somebody's name now
02:12 PM Tom_L: they had all sorts of things like finishes, powders, touch up markers, burn in sticks etc
02:13 PM roycroft: so you could easily fix all your mistakes
02:14 PM Tom_L: or somebody else's
02:14 PM roycroft: or that
02:14 PM roycroft: we all know you're perfect :)
02:14 PM Tom_L: no not by a long shot
02:14 PM Tom_L: my partner did most of the touchup
02:15 PM roycroft: floetrol slows down drying a lot, so i'm not ready to recoat yet, but soon i'll shoot the second coat of color and see how it turns out
02:15 PM roycroft: i'm optimistic
02:15 PM roycroft: the paint is still really thick, but i am using more air pressure than i do with industrial paint
02:16 PM roycroft: it's more hvmp than hvlp
02:16 PM Tom_L: didn't have to thin it much?
02:16 PM roycroft: i added about 15% floetrol
02:16 PM XXCoder: Unterhausen: control shift c to copy text from hexchat'
02:16 PM roycroft: which isn't really a thinner - it's not much thinner than the paint itself
02:16 PM roycroft: it enhances leveling
02:17 PM roycroft: and the longer dry time is part of that
02:18 PM * roycroft heads off with a chainsaw and a determined look to get some other work done while the paint dries
02:24 PM * JT-Shop attempts to purchase some all season Michelin tires for the C8
02:27 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:29 PM perry_j1987: finally made it to the shop
02:31 PM JT-Shop: snow drifts real high?
02:31 PM perry_j1987: had to drop off parts at customers and took care of bunch of stuff at home so i didnt have to sit in the shop environment to work on it heh
02:42 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i thought it came with all season?
02:42 PM JT-Shop: the Z51 package comes with summer only
02:42 PM Tom_L: oh
02:43 PM JT-Shop: I'll keep the original wheels and tires for track days
02:43 PM Tom_L: :)
02:43 PM JT-Shop: Z51, performance exhaust, tires, brakes, cooling system etc.
02:43 PM JT-Shop: need that going to Kroger's for milk you know
02:43 PM Tom_L: why hell yes
02:44 PM JT-Shop: any way the Q9I wheels are in :)
02:44 PM Tom_L: just don't take the same path every time.. your friend in blue might catch on
02:44 PM JT-Shop: they were out in force today for some reason
02:44 PM JT-Shop: only one road to town...
02:44 PM Tom_L: they must have got wind of your order
02:45 PM JT-Shop: I've been driving the C5 more aggressive than I'll be able to drive the C8 for 1,500 miles lol
02:46 PM Tom_L: do they put light weight oil in those too?
02:46 PM Tom_L: 0-20 5-20...
02:46 PM JT-Shop: I had a P0492 code and after 4 attempts at fixing it only spirited driving fixed it red line in 1-3 a few times and check engine light went off
02:48 PM JT-Shop: the C8 is dry sump system IIRC it's Mobil 1 Supercar 0-40
02:50 PM JT-Shop: https://www.midenginecorvetteforum.com/filedata/fetch?id=380845&d=1654043343
02:50 PM JT-Shop: I have black calipers... I think the red is ugly
02:52 PM fogl: @Unterhausen, yes, i see it, thank you :) ...will go throu and check if this solves my problem
02:53 PM Tom_L: maybe if you were in your 20's
02:55 PM Tom_L: but if you were, you probably wouldn't afford one either
02:55 PM Tom_L: nap time
02:56 PM JT-Shop: yup
03:14 PM XXCoder: new engineerguy video so fun
03:18 PM JT-Shop: link?
03:19 PM roycroft: so i screwed up
03:20 PM roycroft: i did not thoroughly test the new spray gun before using it
03:20 PM XXCoder: a sec
03:20 PM roycroft: it cannot be disassembled for cleaning
03:20 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/9RAMqFg7laE
03:20 PM roycroft: so i get to go back to HF with a gun that has paint residue in it to exchange for a not-broken one
03:20 PM XXCoder: cant run just solvent though it to clean?
03:21 PM roycroft: no, the nozzle needs to be disassembled to clean the inside properly
03:22 PM roycroft: and it's supposed to come off, but it's torqued down so hard i actually twisted the body of the gun trying to unscrew it
03:22 PM XXCoder: ouch geez
03:23 PM roycroft: it did a great job spraying, though
03:25 PM JT-Shop: that's a good sign
03:32 PM XXCoder: yeah but I guess evenually it would fail due to inability to properly clean
03:56 PM perry_j1987: trying to run a subroutine on this machine i made the folder and set the path in the ini
03:56 PM perry_j1987: try homing machine and hitting o1000 CALL in MDI and it says EOF cant find it
04:28 PM JT[m]: Have you ran o1000 before?
04:28 PM perry_j1987: any ideas? i have folder called macros in my linuxcnc config folder
04:28 PM perry_j1987: subroutine_path = macros in the ini
04:29 PM JT[m]: Might need the absolute path
04:29 PM Tom_L: try /home/user/linuxcnc/macros
04:29 PM perry_j1987: my other machine config that just has folder called macros and it worked
04:29 PM JT[m]: ~/linuxcnc/macros
04:29 PM perry_j1987: but i think that was a former version of linuxcnc
04:35 PM perry_j1987: getting closer
04:36 PM JT[m]: If you put the subroutine in the nc_files will it run?
04:36 PM Tom_L: should
04:39 PM JT[m]: It might not if it's not run enabled
04:39 PM JT[m]: I forget
04:39 PM JT[m]: At Speedy Cone so can't look
04:40 PM Tom_L: element signed me out on my phone now it's taking forever to authenticate
04:40 PM JT[m]: I've never had that happen
04:41 PM roycroft: well the second coat of latex turned out nicely - there's a wee bit of orange peel still, but it's a lot smoother than i can do with a brush or roller
04:41 PM roycroft: and since this is my first go at latex paint in the spray gun, i have every reason to believe that i'll be able to dial it in better as i get more experience with it
04:42 PM roycroft: normally, to get a finish this good i'd apply 2-3 coats of flat color, sand it out with p320 paper, and then shoot clear coat over it
04:43 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: hey network guy. how long can a network cable be? 100+ feet?
04:43 PM roycroft: 100m, if it's a good ethernet cable
04:43 PM roycroft: and don't try to push it beyond that
04:43 PM perry_j1987: got it
04:43 PM perry_j1987: ~/linuxcnc/macros worked
04:43 PM roycroft: you won't have signal loss/interference problems
04:43 PM roycroft: you'll have latency problems
04:43 PM JT[m]: Great
04:44 PM roycroft: which you can't fix with a bigger/better cable
04:44 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: I just need about 100' to go out to a sprinkler controller
04:44 PM roycroft: that's less than 1/3 the limit, so you should be good to go there
04:44 PM roguish[m]: thanks
04:45 PM roycroft: it must be some fancy irrigation controller to need an ethernet link
04:45 PM Tom_L: hey siri.. turn roguish[m]'s sprinkler on him
04:45 PM roycroft: 1200 baud rs-232 should be fine for just about any application like that
04:45 PM roycroft: i read some distressing (for some) news today
04:46 PM roycroft: google are integrating chatgpt into their search engine
04:46 PM roguish[m]: fuck siri, and all the rest of those idiot bots
04:46 PM Tom_L: haha
04:46 PM roycroft: i don't use google, so i'm not worried
04:46 PM roguish[m]: DDG
04:46 PM roycroft: but eew
05:03 PM JT[m]: Fixing to storm here
05:06 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (220KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/DNjYrHxFrfdXCcDASyWZnwJN/20230510_170548_7472308696080774013.jpg >
05:18 PM perry_j1987: trying to get chatgpt to write a subroutine for me heh
05:19 PM perry_j1987: https://pastebin.com/gA9TjhMU
05:19 PM perry_j1987: here it is raw https://pastebin.com/raw/gA9TjhMU
05:23 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, you've seen these? http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cradek/
05:23 PM Tom_L: as a start point
05:24 PM perry_j1987: nope
05:24 PM perry_j1987: i just finally opened the package on this little touchprobe i got while back and playing with it now
05:26 PM perry_j1987: its probing the y it seems, and then it moves over and probes the X the moves look right and probe triggers but then after the second x probe it jsut sits there triggered
05:30 PM perry_j1987: odd now im getting probe is already tripped when it triggers on the second x probe
05:43 PM perry_j1987: why's it always gotta be something weird that i dont udnerstand and now my whole evening is blown wasted with terrible internet and i cant google anything out at this shop lol
05:49 PM JT-Cave: mmm bacon cheese burger, tater tots and butter pecan ice cream
05:49 PM JT-Cave: made it home before the storm hit...
05:52 PM roycroft: it's sushi night here
05:53 PM roycroft: with storm coming for the indefinite future
05:53 PM roycroft: sunny and unseasonably warm for at least two weeks
05:56 PM JT-Cave: we have rain every day for the next week or so
05:57 PM Tom_L: we have rain predicted
05:57 PM JT-Cave: my friend in SW Missouri just posted her cucumber eating turtle is back again this year
05:58 PM Tom_L: and for burgers looks like it's gonna be 5 guys
05:58 PM JT-Cave: got 3 to pick from...
05:58 PM Tom_L: less the butter pecan ice cream.. they don't serve ice cream :/
05:59 PM JT-Cave: :(
05:59 PM Tom_L: ever try them?
05:59 PM JT-Cave: none near me
05:59 PM Tom_L: they're better than the 'average' place
06:00 PM JT-Cave: no malted milkshake?
06:00 PM Tom_L: no that would be bionic burger
06:01 PM Tom_L: i'm not quite up for their grease tonight
06:01 PM JT-Cave: lol
06:01 PM Tom_L: do you know how hard it is coming down from a week of catered food of all sorts?
06:02 PM JT-Cave: yes I do
06:04 PM Tom_L: i didn't gain anything though.. not much if any
06:05 PM JT-Cave: I prob gained a pound of tater tots tonight lol
06:05 PM JT-Cave: time to relax
06:05 PM Tom_L: heh
06:05 PM Tom_L: agreed
06:06 PM Tom_L: guys burgers were real good... they had one on the boat
07:13 PM CAKESLOB: Tom_L "P-hole.txt"
07:47 PM ChrisH16: Hi all. Running 2.9.0pre1, trying to use pncconf to edit an existing file for a Mesa 7i80hdt config. On the 2nd page for each axis, all the entry fields from Home Switch location through Use Encoder Index for Home are disabled but have my previously-entered settings. Any suggestions? Really don't want to start over.
08:04 PM pcw--home: Was the original file created by the same version of pncconf?
08:04 PM pcw--home: (in general I would hand edit to make changes though)
08:07 PM ChrisH16: Yes, same install. I am trying to get as far as I can with a from-scratch pncconf config before I start hand-editing. I'm migrating from a really old version that I always hand-edited.
08:54 PM Tom_L: CAKESLOB, i wasn't the author..
