12:04 AM roycroft: ouch
12:14 AM roycroft: it's a good thing it didn't put your eye out completely
12:14 AM roycroft: that sounds painful and a big hassle, but at least you're recovered or recovering
12:14 AM XXCoder: ouch. yeah never stopped wearing safety glasses entire time I worked at shop
01:47 AM Deejay: moin
02:36 AM TurBoss: morning
03:03 AM XXCoder: roy lol https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5c08178c1137a64a2bef43f2/18c5a477-9080-48e9-9264-2a8ff9d03c65/Bz+C+230501+P.jpg
03:04 AM XXCoder: jt you too
03:14 AM TurBoss: 🙂
03:40 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning 🙃 (fasting for labs this morning...)
04:21 AM Tom_L: morning
05:00 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:46 AM * Tom_L starts his Monday
07:52 AM * JT-Cave is not sure what day it is any more
07:52 AM JT-Cave: time to start my chicken day for sure
07:53 AM skunkworks[m]: I have pulled metal shavings out of my eye with a neodymium magnet.. But that only works with ferrous metals..
07:54 AM travis_farmer[m]: well heck... i have been fasting since i got up (for labs)... i get home ready for breakfast, and my bagels are moldy!!!!!
07:54 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i'm getting closer to that point
07:54 AM CloudEvil: skunkworks[m]: technically also nickel and cobalt and ...
07:58 AM skunkworks[m]: sure
08:30 AM JT-Cave: I do try and maintain a routine that resembles a work week sorta
08:31 AM skunkworks[m]: Me too! (except I still actually go to an office)
08:31 AM JT-Cave: I just have to walk across the driveway to get to work :)
08:34 AM skunkworks[m]: That is aweoms
08:34 AM skunkworks[m]: awesome
08:41 AM * Tom_L heads out
08:41 AM Tom_L: good bot...
08:58 AM * JT-Shop taught it well...
10:26 AM Unterhaus_: I got a 40mm fan and it came in a box big enough for a 150mm fan
10:30 AM CloudEvil: Today amazon shipped me some toothpaste, for no understandable reason.
10:45 AM Unterhaus_: they're trying to tell you something?
10:45 AM KimK_ is now known as KimK
10:45 AM Unterhaus_: I think that's a scam
10:55 AM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
11:59 AM Unterhausen: I recently saw a meme about how hard it is to put a usb key in. It just took me 4 tries
12:00 PM Unterhausen: the meme was highly optimistic
12:02 PM sensille: 3 is normal
12:03 PM Unterhausen: the meme suggested that 2 tries was very frustrating
12:04 PM sensille: first try: you are correct, but don't believe in it. 2. try: you try hard, but are wrong. third try: you know it has to work so it works
12:05 PM Unterhausen: and I'm about to try to install debian dual boot on a uefi trusted system so the frustration is just beginning
12:05 PM Unterhausen: I was right the second time but it didn't go in, thus taking 4 tries
12:25 PM bjorkintosh: the key is to fit it in with the usb logo facing up.
12:25 PM bjorkintosh: on the tiny end, forget it.
12:25 PM JT-Cave: if the port is facing up that works
12:32 PM Unterhausen: I guess it's the logo in this case
12:32 PM Unterhausen: no usb symbol
12:35 PM Unterhausen: debian 12 install progress bar is laughably bad
12:55 PM Unterhausen: it's nice to install lcnc with debian, how up to date is the packaged version?
01:06 PM Unterhausen: I was on youtube last night and it suggested I watch the video where a person proposed that someone write a lcnc interface for them
01:07 PM Unterhausen: it was 4 years ago, which surprised me
01:44 PM roycroft: i was on youtube last night and it suggested that i buy a 70-year-old 7-1/2 ton shaper
01:45 PM roycroft: i guess it's a good thing i wasn't drunk, with a credit card in my hand
01:52 PM Unterhausen: debian says it can't find build-essentials
01:52 PM Unterhausen: it's because there isn't an s
01:59 PM travis_farmer[m]: no work on the new shop today... rolling gut issues have kept me inside... shame the weather is so nice out...
02:12 PM Tom_L: on USB... whoever invented it should be buried face down when thay pass
02:13 PM Tom_L: USB A
02:14 PM skunkworks[m]: always take me 3 tries to get one to go in..
02:15 PM * Tom_L decides not to touch that statement
02:16 PM skunkworks[m]: lol. I know what I meant..
02:16 PM travis_farmer[m]: lol
02:18 PM Tom_L: severe weather warnings this afternoon
02:19 PM XXCoder: always one for me. I cheat by breaking quantium state of usb by looking then plug. done
05:18 PM Unterhausen: I couldn't get the easy debian install to find my hard drive, so I did expert. Now I don't have a gui, just command line
05:18 PM Unterhausen: I am very expert
05:35 PM roguish[m]: Tom_L: get to the root cellar
05:57 PM Tom_L: meh, it's likely going around us as usual
06:01 PM * JT-Shop did very little today...
06:06 PM JT-Shop: and calls it a day on schedule
07:16 PM roycroft: it's warm and sunny here today, and i'm finally ready to shoot paint
07:17 PM XXCoder: hey what did paint do to you?
07:40 PM * skunkworks[m] uploaded an image: (1398KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/AgcmtYVbjCYftxvXFoFVPDUn/rn_image_picker_lib_temp_c65223ff-ba51-4a44-b74b-c66aa7ebb59d.jpg >
07:40 PM skunkworks[m]: I think it is the right amount of metal and plastic..
07:48 PM Tom_L: should have cut it all from blocks of tool steel :)
07:48 PM Tom_L: looks good
07:49 PM Tom_L: i was gonna ask you earlier how that was coming along
07:50 PM skunkworks[m]: Slooow.
07:53 PM * skunkworks[m] uploaded an image: (1555KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/BUBERfgTxgBzeyQptGTTszta/rn_image_picker_lib_temp_9dc4c87a-44e9-45a4-8740-9b2b6e987ccb.jpg >
07:55 PM Unterhausen: debian set up my computer to play sound through the motherboard speaker
07:55 PM skunkworks[m]: Aww.. Debian.. So quarkey...
07:56 PM Unterhausen: latency on this computer is no good
07:56 PM skunkworks[m]: what are the specs?
07:57 PM Unterhausen: 24000 ns jitter
07:58 PM skunkworks[m]: I have some 3rd/4th gen hp i5s that have awesome latency. The same series in 6th gen suck...
07:58 PM Unterhausen: could be the case here. Might try a different kernel
07:58 PM skunkworks[m]: that is ok - what are you trying to do? if it is external interface - like mesa - that is awesome
07:59 PM skunkworks[m]: it is also ok for some definition of software step generation
07:59 PM Unterhausen: it's probably okay, but I hate it :)
08:00 PM skunkworks[m]: lol - I used to want machines with < 10us latency.. I kinda don't care anymore.
08:00 PM skunkworks[m]: that would give you a 30us base thread and 33k steps per second...
08:00 PM Unterhausen: it's certainly not as bad as the one I was going to use
08:01 PM Unterhausen: I only ever did software stepping for fun, just running some bare steppers with no motion hardware
08:04 PM Unterhausen: I'm going to let latency histogram run with no base and see how bad it gets
08:05 PM skunkworks[m]: I am running the pi with mesa.. 60us+ latency. It is pretty great.
08:05 PM Tom_L: what is your servo thread set to?
08:06 PM skunkworks[m]: (all the experimenting is done on that system)
08:06 PM Unterhausen: 100us
08:06 PM skunkworks[m]: I can double check but I am pretty sure it is 1k
08:06 PM Unterhausen: maybe, it doesn't say
08:07 PM Unterhausen: okay, it says 1000
08:07 PM Unterhausen: so at least it seems like there is no smi on this system that kills latency
08:17 PM roycroft: well i am quite pleased, so far
08:17 PM roycroft: i used one of the infamous harbor freight purple hvlp guns with some original kilz, thinning the paint a wee bit with mineral spirits, and it worked great
08:17 PM roycroft: really nice coverage, not a lot of overspray - pretty economical use of materials
08:18 PM roycroft: the real proof, of course, will be when i attempt to spray the latex top coat
08:18 PM roycroft: i have an old, cheap wagner airless sprayer, but it never worked well, and wasted a lot of paint
08:19 PM roycroft: i was going to get a new, modern one and have another go at spraying latex paint, but decided to try hvlp instead
08:23 PM * roycroft will shoot another coat of kilz soon, and then give the latex a go
08:23 PM Tom_L: if you stick with HVLP and use it much, you may consider a vacuum source for the pressure
08:23 PM Tom_L: we ended up getting one because even the 5hp 80gal compressor worked to keep up
08:23 PM Tom_L: we used it mostly on waterborne finishes
08:25 PM Tom_L: it has something like a 1" hose
08:25 PM roycroft: my compressor did not cycle at all while i was spraying
08:25 PM roycroft: this was a small project, though
08:25 PM Tom_L: https://www.refinishersonline.com/store/index.php?p=product&id=343&parent=15
08:26 PM Tom_L: similar to that pump
08:26 PM Tom_L: not the entire setup.. pic more for the pump
08:26 PM roycroft: i have a supplied air mask now, btw
08:26 PM roycroft: and it works great
08:27 PM roycroft: in fact, it's rather warm today, and the supplied air was cooler than the ambient air, so it was quite refreshing to breathe it
08:27 PM roycroft: plus, absolutely no paint smell at all
08:28 PM roycroft: i'm not sure how that pump you linked would help me at all
08:29 PM Tom_L: just an example of a similar pump we had
08:29 PM Tom_L: but a compressor would do fine for smaller jobs i'm sure
08:29 PM roycroft: i'm using a gravity fed hvlp gun, with a 5hp dual-stage compressor behind it, with a 60 gallon tank
08:29 PM Tom_L: our compressor is dual stage as well
08:30 PM roycroft: if i were spraying non-stop for hours at a time that would be different
08:30 PM Tom_L: right
08:30 PM roycroft: but this was <10 minutes of spraying at about 30psi at the gun
08:30 PM roycroft: like i said, the compressor did not cycle at all
08:30 PM Tom_L: ok
08:30 PM roycroft: that wasn't my concern at all
08:31 PM roycroft: my concern was that the paint i'm using is a lot thicker than the industrial/automotive paints i usually use with the hvlp setup
08:31 PM roycroft: but it went on really nicely - no blotches, no orange peel, no sputtering
08:32 PM roycroft: if the latex paint goes on as well as the primer, this is a game changer for me
08:32 PM Tom_L: the waterborn finishes we were using had a blue tint to them until they flash driee
08:32 PM Tom_L: dried
08:33 PM roycroft: i'll be able to apply paint finishes in a fraction of the time that it takes me to paint by hand, and will conserve material
08:34 PM roycroft: on cabinets and the like i don't want to see brush marks, and it takes several coats, sanding between coats, and using a lot of floetrol to get a really smooth finish by hand
08:34 PM roycroft: or 2-3 coats with a spray gun, and minimal, if any, sanding
08:34 PM * roycroft heads back to the shop to shoot the second coat
09:22 PM roycroft: well, i got a little orange peel on the second coat, but it's not too bad
09:22 PM roycroft: and i'm not going to worry about it, because 1. this is primer, and 2. it's a shop fixture
09:22 PM Tom_L: primer or top coat?
09:22 PM roycroft: cleanup was super easy
09:23 PM roycroft: i've sealed the edges of mdf with shellac before, and with diluted pva glue
09:23 PM roycroft: but kilz has shellac in it already, and does a superior job on mdf
10:31 PM roycroft: well, the orange peel pretty much totally flowed out as it dried
10:31 PM roycroft: i'm very happy with how the primer turned out
10:31 PM XXCoder: nice
