12:51 AM Deejay: moin
01:01 AM Tom_L: either you're early or i'm up way too late
01:01 AM Deejay: i guess the second
01:01 AM Deejay: about 8 am here
04:12 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning ☕️
04:51 AM xxcoder[m]: https://www.reddit.com/r/Machinists/comments/13bk1vf/as_rigid_as_haas_can_be/
04:51 AM xxcoder[m]: this is cool lol
06:00 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:00 AM Tom_L: morning
06:03 AM travis_farmer[m]: did you get any sleep Tom_L?
06:26 AM Tom_L: 67°F Hi 89
06:27 AM JT-Cave: 70-87°F here
06:28 AM JT-Cave: I slept in this morning...
06:28 AM Tom_L: me too
06:28 AM Tom_L: but i finally got to bed aroun 1
06:28 AM JT-Cave: jet lag?
06:29 AM Tom_L: first flight was 45 min late but the 2nd one was 10 min early
06:29 AM Tom_L: no not really
06:29 AM Tom_L: kid had to be to work at 6
06:29 AM Tom_L: better him than me :)
06:29 AM JT-Cave: yup
06:30 AM Tom_L: didn't know Capone played a part in Miami's developement over the years
06:31 AM Tom_L: turns out the tour guide was the set director for Miami Vise
06:32 AM JT-Cave: cool
06:32 AM Tom_L: he had some pretty good storries
06:36 AM JT-Cave: I suspect Miami had a lot of influence from New York and Chicago
06:57 AM JT-Cave: friend came by yesterday evening and helped me pull a 40' cedar tree back upright... wet snow had pulled it over 90° and it never recovered fully
06:59 AM Tom_L: you tie it off to something or will it stay on it's own?
06:59 AM JT-Cave: LOL it's tied off to the side by side atm
07:00 AM Tom_L: heh
07:00 AM JT-Cave: I assume it will need to be tied off for a long time
08:10 AM JT-Cave: fixin to get some heavy rain here
08:32 AM TomLight[m]: Cloudy here
08:32 AM TomLight[m]: Looks like rain
08:32 AM travis_farmer[m]: bright and sunny here :-)
08:47 AM JT-Shop: time for some photos then...
08:47 AM travis_farmer[m]: bit later, working on something...
08:54 AM JT-Cave: a friend just told me Boeing is laying off 900 people
08:55 AM skunkworks[m]: same here. rain today
08:57 AM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (258KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/SQvfhgOttQtLxccrqGyPXJCj/Screenshot%202023-05-08%20at%2009-56-20%20Weather.png >
08:57 AM travis_farmer[m]: now heading outside...
08:58 AM roguish[m]: clear skys and upper 60's here. no rain in sight for the week.....
08:58 AM TomLight[m]: Haven't heard about any layoffs here but then I Haven't been here
08:59 AM TomLight[m]: We make the tubes for them amongst other things
09:05 AM JT-Cave: I did see an article where Boeing is laying off administrative people around the world
09:06 AM Tom_L: i've seen so many thru the years...
09:07 AM Tom_L: shouldn't affect us that much since boeing left here and Spirit took over their spot
09:07 AM Tom_L: we still make the tubes but now aren't limited just to Boeing contracts
09:07 AM Tom_L: Airbus is another big one here now
09:08 AM Tom_L: along with the smaller planes
09:08 AM roguish[m]: tons of companies are laying off. it's like crazy out here. way too much hiring during the pandemic, and not enough profits. now wall street is saying 'show me the money....'
09:09 AM Tom_L: kid was making a few parts for musk too iirc
09:35 AM JT-Cave: with Revere closing the PB plant it looks like I'll be more retired now
09:52 AM travis_farmer[m]: so, back inside after i realized the bit of scrap lumber i have... doesn't seem to be big enough for what i wanted to do. so i took a couple pictures. firstly, my disaster of a current shop (gutted out camper), in all it's claustrophobic glory...
09:53 AM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (574KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/LcpsMncCrLxqcrHqjNyRMLeg/20230508_104141.jpg >
09:53 AM travis_farmer[m]: now of a shed end panel, with a 8-foot step ladder for scale...
09:53 AM JT-Shop: looks like someone works in there... a bit small for sure
09:54 AM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (1626KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/rfEXsQkLbEcHNUWlDDSxIqHs/20230508_103719.jpg >
09:54 AM JT-Shop: nice steep pitch roof!
09:54 AM JT-Shop: what's the foot print?
09:54 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, it is the alpine version
09:54 AM travis_farmer[m]: 20 x 13
09:55 AM roguish[m]: travis_farmer: looking good...... Air-b-n-b ????
09:55 AM JT-Shop: that should give you some elbow room
09:55 AM JT-Shop: LOL
09:55 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, should be a lot better
09:55 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, you want to have a stay, roguish ? ;-)
09:55 AM * JT-Shop goes to tie a rope to the rope on the cedar tree and let the side by side go back into the lean to
09:56 AM JT-Shop: put him to work!
09:56 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah! :-)
09:59 AM * JT-Shop waits for Janice to finish before going to work
10:03 AM travis_farmer[m]: now, the issue i am trying to figure out with the shed, is in framing up the front wall and door frame, is how to attach to the steel tubes? i don't want to weaken them and remove their snow load ability (for what snow would stick on the steep roof...) so i don't want to screw fasteners into the pipes...
10:03 AM JT-Shop: 2 hole emt straps
10:03 AM travis_farmer[m]: one thought that just occured, i could use the bolts at the pipe joints, or do like JT says... ;-)
10:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: *occurred
10:07 AM travis_farmer[m]: maybe a combination of both will work great. :-) now if i just had the lumber i need, in the length i need. longest scrap is 8-foot. i will have to confer with my father (when he comes home) on if any of the longer non-scrap is available to use...
10:11 AM JT-Shop: scarf joints are remarkably strong if made correctly
10:14 AM JT-Shop: https://www.corvettemuseum.org/web-cams/
10:14 AM travis_farmer[m]: true... but i will drag out all the scrap lumber with him and see just what is availible, and what is not. could be some diamonds hidden away in there. if there is as least a couple of 14 footers in there, i can scarf the rest
11:07 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, nothing more for briggs now either?
11:08 AM JT-Cave: I've not done any work for Briggs in several years, when they had the initial slowdown around 2017 or so I stopped making parts for them
11:09 AM Tom_L: someone will hunt you down...
11:10 AM JT-Cave: I'm still doing work for Foxy... but yup the word will get out
11:10 AM Tom_L: kid said they went to france and got some more cincinnati gantrys to mount on the rails
11:11 AM Tom_L: they had at least one pair leaning agains the wall when i was last there
11:11 AM JT-Cave: oh and that Boeing layoff is one of their suppliers not Boeing
11:11 AM Tom_L: they fit 2 on each set of rails
11:11 AM Tom_L: oh
11:12 AM Tom_L: i haven't been in their 2nd building but it's likely full of parts for them and material stock
11:13 AM Tom_L: before he died, Dewey had the biggest shop in town...
11:13 AM JT-Cave: I noticed some scratches on the C5 that were not there the other day...
11:13 AM Tom_L: uh oh
11:13 AM Tom_L: well i can safely say.. it wasn't me
11:14 AM Tom_L: i think i should mow today since rain is predicted all week
11:14 AM JT-Cave: too wet to mow here atm
11:15 AM Tom_L: gotta move vehicles around before i can though
11:15 AM Tom_L: put my suv under the patio and one of the kid's trucks in where i normally park (very tight fit)
11:15 AM Tom_L: and took the other one to the airport covered parking while we were gone
11:16 AM Tom_L: her's stayed where it was
11:16 AM JT-Cave: time to expand...
11:16 AM Tom_L: it is getting pretty tight
11:16 AM Tom_L: no room to expand much though
11:21 AM JT-Cave: vertical?
11:22 AM Tom_L: heh
11:22 AM JT-Cave: lunch minute is over with back to the cedar tree
11:24 AM roycroft: holy moly - the forecast says it will get up to 35 on sunday
11:24 AM roycroft: today should be the last day of rain for a while
11:25 AM * roycroft needs to find some 8mm rod for a router jig this morning, but otherwise will be able to say indoors for most of the day
11:28 AM CloudEvil: My 8mm rod is massive.
11:28 AM CloudEvil: (3m) (also threaded and galvanised)
11:29 AM roycroft: i need 1m of it
11:29 AM roycroft: and not threaded, and not galvanised
11:29 AM roycroft: i don't need drill rod, but that may be all i can get that's not crusty and/or bent
11:29 AM Tom_L: things like that i usually get drill rod
11:30 AM roycroft: actually, 304 would be good
11:30 AM Tom_L: local guy keeps water & oil hardened
11:30 AM roycroft: the local steel yard keep an extensive inventory of tool steel, but they have hardly any metric metals at all
11:30 AM roycroft: fortunately, if i can't get 8mm, 5/16" will do
11:31 AM roycroft: it's only 0.006" undersize, which, while introducing a wee bit of slop, would be acceptable for this
11:31 AM roycroft: i'd rather get proper 8mm though
11:34 AM roycroft: er, it's 0.0025" undersize, sorry
11:35 AM * roycroft knew 0.006" wasn't right, as most 8mm collets are interchangeable with 5/16" collets
11:35 AM roycroft: if i bought 5/16" 304 rod (not precision ground) the diameter might be off by more than that
11:43 AM Unterhaus_: the stuff made for linear motion is nice, but $100
11:47 AM Unterhaus_: amazon doesn't realize they ruined their music service, keep trying to get me to use it and when I do, it's all country music
11:52 AM roycroft: no western?
11:52 AM Loetmichel: "bot types"?
11:52 AM Loetmichel: +h
11:53 AM roycroft: yes
11:53 AM * roycroft just got pricing for the finescale optical comparators
11:54 AM roycroft: the pocket model is $52 with one set of reticles, and the desltop model is $67.50 with four sets of reticles. additional reticles are $7.50/set
11:55 AM roycroft: that's pretty good pricing, imo, and it's a nice unit for a hand-held one
11:55 AM roycroft: the body is transparent, so it does not need an illuminator - light entering the side of the body should suffice
11:56 AM roycroft: reticles are provided in pairs -one with black lines, and one with white lines
11:57 AM roycroft: https://www.finescalecompany.com/ , in case anyone is interested
12:54 PM * Tom_L gives roycroft a couple Amazon channels of Kpop
01:03 PM Unterhaus_: if you play a kpop station, you will regret it, that's all they'll show you
01:04 PM Unterhaus_: I have no idea how they decided I like country, I never played any before the switch
01:28 PM * roycroft doesn't ever listen to radio stations on a computer, but does have a couple internet radios
01:29 PM roycroft: since i'm nat'ed at my home office, those radios use the same public ip as my home computers, and i don't get any ads/spam related to the internet radio stations i listen to
01:29 PM roycroft: so i think the targeting is done with cookies
01:30 PM * roycroft found some slightly rusty 5/16" mild steel rod in his metal stores, and decided that for a jig it's better to clean that stuff up than to spend money and make an excursion to the steel yard
01:42 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:57 PM Unterhaus_: you can also be internet famous for using something you already had but were saving because it might be useful some day
01:57 PM Unterhaus_: amazon probably stereotyping me due to my purchases
02:08 PM roycroft: lunch time is over
02:08 PM roycroft: time to clean up the other rod
02:08 PM roycroft: and then i get back to routing
02:20 PM Tom_L: ok, yard done.. everything moved back where it belongs. shower then nap for me
02:21 PM travis_farmer[m]: oh, by all means, take a shower and a nap at the same time ;-)
02:42 PM roycroft: the eye doctor just called, wondering why i hadn't dropped my glasses off yet
02:42 PM roycroft: they said they texted me last week that the lenses were ready
02:43 PM roycroft: i told them i don't receive texts, and they should have a note to that effect
02:43 PM roycroft: they said "yes, there's a note that says 'do not text', but we didn't understand that"
02:59 PM XXCoder: geez
02:59 PM XXCoder: how old is texting? its been a while.
03:00 PM XXCoder: i get opposite problem all time
03:00 PM XXCoder: they call when I add note "text only"
03:00 PM XXCoder: maybe i should start typing in "do not text" so they will text me
03:06 PM Tom_L: send tty
03:07 PM XXCoder: that would be funny
03:17 PM skunkworks[m]: my x wife still gets texts that I have dental apointment. Have fixed it so many times...
03:18 PM skunkworks[m]: I have kinda given up
03:21 PM Tom_L: tell them you lost all your teeth and no longer need their services
03:21 PM Tom_L: :)
03:22 PM travis_farmer[m]: that would be me :-) ... :-(
03:28 PM roycroft: and my rx is wrong again
03:29 PM roycroft: predictably, because they did not listen to me when i told them what i thought the problem was
03:29 PM roycroft: they instead told me essentially to leave it to the professionals to figure out the problem
03:30 PM travis_farmer[m]: i would tell them to pound sand, if they thought they knew what my vision was doing better than me...
03:31 PM roycroft: this was round four of new lenses
03:31 PM roycroft: not counting the pair they broke
03:31 PM roycroft: so now we're on to round five
03:31 PM travis_farmer[m]: you are way too kind
03:32 PM roycroft: i've been dealing with these folks for decades
03:32 PM roycroft: they have a new lab manager
03:32 PM roycroft: i don't think he's working out well
03:32 PM roycroft: nor do i expect him to last very long
03:52 PM Unterhaus_: I just broke bard. Sorry if anyone was counting on it
03:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:59 PM JT-Shop: what do you call the knot that goes around another rope and slips one way and grabs the other way?
04:02 PM Unterhaus_: some kind of hitch knot, right?
04:02 PM Unterhaus_ is now known as Unterhausen
04:04 PM JT-Shop: dunno... I need to tie one thou
04:05 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQCKLEN_7ds&t=54s
04:11 PM JT-Shop: gotta put the tire back on the side by side first
04:43 PM Tom_L: mmm i got a knot book somewhere... haven't had that out in years
04:45 PM Tom_L: was wondering if a bowline did that
04:45 PM Tom_L: maybe knot... just easy to tie and untie
05:05 PM JT-Shop: a bowline does not slip
05:05 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:42 PM DaViruz: JT-Shop: a prusik maybe? there is a few variants that are fairly unidirectional
05:51 PM JT-Shop: that's an interesting knot
06:28 PM roycroft: the prusik is kind of like a pair of two half hitches that meet in the middle
06:29 PM roycroft: and what you're looking for, jt-shop, is two half hitches
06:33 PM roycroft: or a taught-line hitch
06:33 PM roycroft: the latter is more easily adjustable
06:35 PM _unreal_: hum cant find anything
06:35 PM _unreal_: I just got one of these free p-dvr8-5gb, dont know if it works or not. BUT would be interesting if there is a custom linux bild for it
06:35 PM _unreal_: cant find anything though
08:48 PM xxcoder[m]: lol

11:41 PM Lcvette[m]: Eff that... I had to have a sliver of iron removed from my cornea. My eye bothered me a little throughout that afternoon, but that night it Tore up the back of my eyelid. Er visit, no help, a specialist had to remove it and then polish the lens. When the numbing drops wore off boy that was a miserable 4 days before the pain subsided. And had to wear an sure patch for 2 weeks.
11:41 PM Lcvette[m]: Wear your safety glasses
