02:14 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning ☕️
02:21 AM Deejay: hey there
02:21 AM travis_farmer[m]: howdy :)
04:54 AM Tom_L: Morning
04:59 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:26 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:45 AM Tom_L: 78F
05:46 AM travis_farmer[m]: 51F, with heavy rain and flash-flood warnings
06:07 AM travis_farmer[m]: river and park just down the hill from me has flooded!
06:07 AM JT-Cave: 45°F sunny
06:16 AM Tom_L: Looks like we got some rain but hard to tell when you're surrounded by water
06:17 AM travis_farmer[m]: is your house flooded, or just the land around it?
06:28 AM Tom_L: Atlantic
06:29 AM travis_farmer[m]: ... oh, on a boat... LMAO :-)
06:43 AM JT-Cave: already out of the Gulf?
06:50 AM Tom_L: Don't think we were in it leaving from Miami
06:52 AM Tom_L: But I'm sure we' re well out there by now
06:53 AM JT-Cave: what's the next stop?
06:55 AM Tom_L: Dominican Republic
06:58 AM JT-Cave: the Caribbean Sea
06:58 AM Tom_L: ...ck ck in later..breakfast time
06:58 AM Tom_L: Yeah
06:58 AM JT-Cave: k

07:51 AM * JT-Cave starts his chicken day
07:54 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:02 AM miss0r2: There we go. The old land-rover 101" is now converted from v-belt to poly-v belt. What a difference that is!
08:02 AM JT-Cave: quieter?
08:03 AM miss0r2: yes. even you you don't take the frequent squealing into account
08:04 AM miss0r2: https://imgur.com/a/pYrIdgx This is what it looks like
08:04 AM Jym: Morning
08:05 AM miss0r2: mornin
08:05 AM JT-Cave: not much in there :)
08:05 AM miss0r2: That is a positive when it comes to engine bays! You can get your hands in there with a 2nd and 3rd elbow joint
08:06 AM JT-Cave: my 81 Chevy C10 Custom Deluxe pickup I could sit on the fender with my feet inside and work on it
08:07 AM miss0r2: hehe I'll one-up you with this one. I can sit on the drivers seat and adjust the carbs ect...
08:07 AM JT-Cave: lol
08:07 AM miss0r2: (the engine is situated between the front seats) :D
08:07 AM miss0r2: so, I can be inside and dry doing my thing :)
08:08 AM JT-Cave: like old vans and motor homes used to be
08:08 AM * JT-Cave wanders off to start his chicken day
08:08 AM Jym: miss0r2 OR.... Be driving down the highway doing 70MPH and adjust the carbs at the same ???
08:09 AM miss0r2: Have a good one.
08:10 AM miss0r2: Jym: Its not very pleseant in there with the engine bay open while driving. The engine cover forces the hot air from the radiator and the engine fumes out under the car. With the lid off you get _IT_ALL_ into the car with you. It gets hot right fast in a hurrt
08:10 AM miss0r2: hurry*
08:10 AM miss0r2: I'm not saying no.. I'm just saying its a consideration :D
08:11 AM Jym: miss0r2 Oh, I'm FULLY aware of that. Even just parked it's way too hot plus the exhaust fumes in your face =)
08:11 AM miss0r2: :]
08:11 AM miss0r2: Good'ol land rovers
08:12 AM miss0r2: anyway. I have the job completed just in time to go pick up the kids from school. Have a good one
08:12 AM Jym: Well.... ANY Van/rv with an engne cover between the seats =)
08:12 AM Jym: Take Care
08:25 AM skunkworks[m]: Jym!
08:26 AM Jym: skunkworks[m] Hiii =)
08:27 AM skunkworks[m]: How is it going? long time (or it seems like it)
08:28 AM Jym: Okey, my wife of 25 years passed away couple years ago, still kinda dealing with that. How you been?
08:29 AM skunkworks[m]: Oof - sorry Jym.
08:29 AM Jym: Thank you =)
08:30 AM skunkworks[m]: Kids are growing like weeds.. still tinkering.
08:30 AM Jym: Kids..... human or goat kind?
08:30 AM Jym: or both?
08:31 AM skunkworks[m]: lol - human. No goats - thinking about chickens though
08:31 AM Jym: I thought you had sheep?
08:33 AM skunkworks[m]: Me? no.. I live in town
08:36 AM Jym: My memory is failing, insomnia is a bitch, lol
08:36 AM skunkworks[m]: we had just talked about you - wondering how you where..
08:38 AM skunkworks[m]: were? My grammar/spelling hasn't improved much...
08:44 AM Jym: Yeah? Did I piss someone off remotely or something? lol
08:53 AM skunkworks[m]: Nope. 🙂
09:06 AM Jym: lol, I'm surprised ;)
09:06 AM Jym: But nice to be thought of =)
09:28 AM skunkworks[m]: I have been doing un-natural things with linuxcnc. It has been fun 🙂
09:39 AM Jym: skunkworks[m] Unnatural... such as ???
09:40 AM skunkworks[m]: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/23bEsKMNJH0
09:42 AM Jym: Very nice, next time I need a D hole, I know who to turn to =)
10:12 AM roycroft: hey, jym
10:12 AM roycroft: nice seeing you - it's been a minute
10:16 AM Jym: @roy
10:17 AM Jym: roycroft Thank you, nice hearing from you as well.
10:18 AM roycroft: are you still in norcal?
10:18 AM roycroft: iirc the last we heard from you the fire was pretty close to your property
10:25 AM Jym: Semi-kinda, I'm closer to Sacramento now, NOT in a fire zone. It was about a mile away, but no damage
10:28 AM CaptHindsight[m]: lots of ghosts in the Sacramento area
10:28 AM roycroft: i'm glad you're ok
10:29 AM Jym: CaptHindsight[m] How so? And how ya doin?
10:29 AM roycroft: i'm not so sure about the closer to sacramento part though :)
10:29 AM Jym: roycroft Well, at least physically. lol, it's not too bad ;)
10:34 AM CaptHindsight[m]: took a family member to the ER last Wednesday, the next day I have whatever they tested for but were unable to determine what it is, bad strep kind of throat/bad cold
10:35 AM Jym: CaptHindsight[m] do you suspect covid?
10:35 AM CaptHindsight[m]: negative covid results
10:36 AM CaptHindsight[m]: strep negative, flu negative, etc etc
10:36 AM Jym: that's good at least. I know there's a nasty cold going around
10:36 AM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah avoid it
10:38 AM Jym: Already had it, 99% done with it, maybe seasonal allergies, not sure.
10:38 AM CaptHindsight[m]: people were falling on the floor at the ER
10:39 AM Jym: passing out? Sometimes, the hospital is the WORSE place to be.... all those sick people
10:39 AM Jym: ...irony
10:39 AM CaptHindsight[m]: curses, evil spirits, ghosts, fascists etc etc
10:40 AM CaptHindsight[m]: never mention science
10:43 AM Jym: CaptHindsight[m] Are you sure you went to a hospital? Sounds more like a voodoo ceremony, lol
10:45 AM CaptHindsight[m]: well there was a big cross on the building
10:45 AM Jym: CaptHindsight[m] Was it upside down? Anyone floating above their bed?
10:46 AM CaptHindsight[m]: just the usual superstition
10:46 AM Jym: ah ok
10:48 AM CaptHindsight[m]: some blood letting and some magic pills
10:48 AM Jym: lol
11:09 AM Unterhaus__: any leeches?

11:15 AM travis_farmer[m]: my town today

11:18 AM skunkworks[m]: roller gates all the way up...
11:19 AM skunkworks[m]: (lock and dam # 6)
11:33 AM roycroft: it's overcast here
11:33 AM roycroft: which is better than forecast - it was supposed to be cloudy
11:33 AM roycroft: but we are finally starting to dry out a bit
11:34 AM Unterhaus__: there is a town near here that always floods. Maybe this week, we have had rain for days now
11:35 AM Unterhaus__: it would be nice if it warm up so I could put my peppers outside
11:37 AM roycroft: i have an ex who is from grand forks, north dakota
11:38 AM roycroft: when the red river of the north had its century flood in 1997 all of downtown grand forks was flooded for weeks
11:38 AM roycroft: and to make matters worse, a fire broke out in one of the buildings downtown
11:38 AM Jym: Ugh, I forget the web interface times me rather quickly
11:38 AM Jym: s/me/out/
11:38 AM roycroft: the fire department could not get within blocks of it, and as a result, much of downtown grand forks burned down because of the flood
11:39 AM Jym: Fire AND flood?! OUCH
11:39 AM roycroft: we were visiting during part of that - it was awful
11:39 AM roycroft: east grand forks is right across the river, in minnesota
11:40 AM roycroft: it got flooded just as badly
11:40 AM roycroft: when the whole thing was over, both cities got a bunch of fema money
11:40 AM Jym: Instead of 10,000 trees, a bear decided to climb a power pole and started a fire. Fire was put out quickly, but still
11:40 AM roycroft: grand forks rebuilt its parks
11:40 AM roycroft: east grand forks built a flood wall along the red river
01:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Unterhaus__: they used some sort of plastic leech and they left its tongue taped into the arm so they could change the leech when it got full. There was another leech tongue with a bag of salt water that they said would drain into the veins.
01:23 PM roycroft: what is this world coming to with plastic leeches?
01:23 PM roycroft: are we next to expect 3-printed eyes of newt?
01:23 PM roycroft: cnc routed magic wands?
01:24 PM roycroft: next thing you know drawing and quartering will be performed by teams of robots, not horses
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: takes lots of barber training from what I saw
01:26 PM roycroft: or a barbergpt
01:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's all magic
01:36 PM Jym: roycroft Nah, just get the rednecks and their trucks with 54" tires to do the quartering... YEEEEEEHAAAAA
01:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the lord works in mysterious ways
01:43 PM cpresser: Is there anything else but writing the backlash=1337 in the ini-file to try the backlash compensation?
01:46 PM skunkworks[m]: you would want to up the stepgen accelleration to 2X your axis accel.
01:49 PM cpresser: got that
01:49 PM cpresser: I checked with a dial indicator, it seems like nothing has changed.
01:50 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:36 PM XXCoder: whoa sudden estlcam videos. 4 of em
02:36 PM XXCoder: that channels been dead for long time
03:06 PM roycroft: i just got an email from an it manager at a large local hospital
03:06 PM roycroft: it consisted of two attachments - one named 'attachmen.eml' which contained a winmail.dat file, and the other a winmail.dat file
03:07 PM roycroft: i emailed him back and told him i really would like to read his email (i really would), but that winmail.dat is a proprietary format that only microsoft outlook and microsoft live can handle
03:07 PM roycroft: and that if he would send me the email in plaintext or some non-proprietary format we'd be good to go
03:08 PM roycroft: he called me and is really pissed off, and told me that he's never had this problem with any other correspondant in the time he's been working at the hospital
03:08 PM roycroft: i've known him for 20+ years at that hospital
03:08 PM roycroft: is it possible to correspond with thousands of people per year for over two decades and never once encounter someone not using outlook until today?
03:09 PM XXCoder: possible if everyone guy works with only uses emails for business
03:10 PM roycroft: most exchange servers send anything offsite in plaintext or some non-proprietary rtf format, and add the winmail.dat version as an attachment
03:10 PM roycroft: exchange server is actually fairly intelligent about that - it checks to see if the remote mta is running exchange and, if not, it presents it with a version the recipient can decipher
03:11 PM roycroft: one has to intentionally misconfigure exchange to send only winmail.dat to everyone
03:11 PM roycroft: and no, this guy doesn't just do in-house emails
03:11 PM roycroft: i think someone broke his exchange server, and i tried to explain that to him, but he insisted that i'm the one with the problem
03:13 PM roycroft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/how-email-message-formats-affect-internet-email-messages-in-outlook-3b2c0536-c1c0-1d68-19f0-8cae13c26722
03:13 PM roycroft: microsoft have what they call "TNEF" - transport neutral email format - that is intended to be used when sending emails to non-exchange servers
03:15 PM Jym: Lovely.... NOT https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_Neutral_Encapsulation_Format
03:16 PM Mleekush[m] is now known as Mleekush9310[m]
03:16 PM Jym: "...TNEF attachments can contain security-sensitive information such as user login name and file paths,[3][4] from which access controls could possibly be inferred. "
03:19 PM roycroft: that's not my problem
03:19 PM roycroft: i'm not the one using wonky, proprietary software
03:19 PM roycroft: :)
03:20 PM rmu: https://linux.die.net/man/1/tnef
03:21 PM Jym: rmu OR.... just not accept M$ emails, maybe? lol
03:21 PM roycroft: i don't mind accepting m$ emails, as long as they sent a not winmail.dat file with it
03:22 PM roycroft: it's nice that linux has a utility to decode it
03:22 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to forward a winmail.dat file to a linux box, decode it there, and then forward it back to my mail client
03:23 PM roycroft: it's not for me, nor anyone, to dictate what software other people use, and i don't judge people for using m$ products
03:23 PM rmu: i don't remember the specificy, but it can happen that outlook sends those winmail.dat attachments under some circumstances even if it shouldn't.
03:24 PM Jym: I wouldn't accept ANY attachment unless it was an image or PDF
03:24 PM roycroft: i hadn't seen a legitimate email that only has a winmail.dat file in years before today
03:24 PM rmu: maybe if you use word as email editor or something equally stupid
03:24 PM roycroft: i get spam/scam emails with winmail.dat all the time
03:24 PM roycroft: you can send me an rtf file (that is not m$ winmail.dat rtf), and i'm fine with it
03:24 PM rmu: the winmail.dat will contain the text, it is internet-encapsulation of proprietary rtf email format of microsoft
03:24 PM roycroft: or a pdf or eps or postscript file
03:24 PM roycroft: or plain text
03:24 PM roycroft: right
03:25 PM roycroft: winmail.dat is a proprietary m$ implementation of rtf
03:25 PM roycroft: because the great thing about a standard, in microsoft's view, is that they can "improve" it and force everyone to use their "improved" version
03:26 PM roycroft: or so they think
03:26 PM Jym: I'll stick to RFC'c tyvm
03:26 PM rmu: i think this winmail.dat goes back to the 90ies
03:26 PM roycroft: that's when i remember getting winmail.dat files all the time (other than spam/scam)
03:27 PM roycroft: it's really been 15-20 years since i've gotten any like this
03:27 PM rmu: does gmail deal with winmail.dat?
03:27 PM roycroft: there must have been a generation of outlook admins that knew how to configure it properly
03:27 PM roycroft: i think gmail can
03:27 PM roycroft: but using gmail requires getting a gmail account
03:29 PM roycroft: and i don't mean to be obstinate, but the point of all of this is that email is a multi-platform protocol and senders should never assume that their recipients have any particular software/platform for viewing it
03:29 PM rmu: I'm not sure gmail understands it now, but it used not to
03:29 PM roycroft: i should *never* have to do something special to read an email, no matter what generated it
03:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: I'm sorry I have no outrage left for the email issue. Do you have anything wood related that i can get upset about?
03:29 PM roycroft: proprietary attachments notwithstanding
03:29 PM roycroft: i'm not upset about this
03:30 PM roycroft: more astonished that it resurfaced after all these years
03:30 PM Jym: CaptHindsight[m]You can get upset about not having any wood, how's that?
03:30 PM roycroft: but my current shop project is going swimmingly
03:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if only it was that simple
03:31 PM roycroft: i decided to repair the part i damaged yesterday instead of remaking it, and the repair turned out perfect
03:31 PM roycroft: bondo is an excellent repair product for mdf
03:31 PM rmu: roycroft: the internet suggests this may happen if the sender sets some "user properties" on the recipient, whatever that may be
03:31 PM roycroft: hmm
03:32 PM roycroft: well this person has corresponded successfully with me in the past
03:32 PM roycroft: the "user properties" may be "i know this person uses outlook"
03:33 PM roycroft: but i don't know why someone would set that intentionally if they don't know
03:33 PM roycroft: or if they do know, but use alternate facts to make their decisions
03:33 PM roycroft: anyway, he'll send me another email that i can read, or he won't
03:33 PM roycroft: i did give him my fax number in case that helps :)
03:34 PM roycroft: and it's a hospital, so yes, they do still have fax machines or a fax server
03:34 PM Jym: roycroft "What's a fax?"
03:34 PM JT-Shop: lol
03:35 PM roycroft: i remember when i was a little kid, the district office where my father worked (he was an assistant superintendent of schools at the time) got a fax machine
03:35 PM roycroft: this was in the late '60s
03:36 PM roycroft: it was the old-fashioned kind, where you mounted the document on a cylinder that looked kind of like an edison grammophone, and it spun around as the document was scanned line per line
03:37 PM roycroft: then sent on an acustic coupler phone line to the recipient, who had to have an identical machine spinning at the exact same speed for the fax to print properly
03:37 PM roycroft: it was magic!
03:38 PM roycroft: and the machine was about the size of a refrigerator, because up until the '70s, all electronics had to be the size of a refrigerator or larger
03:38 PM roycroft: there was some law about that that nixon got repealed, i suppose
03:38 PM roycroft: maybe that's what his china trip was all about - shrinking refrigerators

03:53 PM XXCoder: japan zen garden
03:54 PM JT-Shop: :)
03:58 PM roycroft: debian 11.7 was just released
04:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: anyone need 75VDC brushed servo motors 100-200in oz?
04:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: with tachs built in
04:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ok, no takers after 4 minutes, they will be out back
04:17 PM JT-Shop: lol

05:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Unterhaus__: how did the madison meeting go?
05:26 PM skunkworks[m]: well - for me - it was fun. Not long enough. Had to drive home every day
05:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: skunkworks: I tuned into the Zoom feed one afternoon and everyone was standing in front of whatever machine Seb had the camera on
