01:08 AM Deejay: moin
01:22 AM Tom_L: morning
01:22 AM Deejay: hey tom
04:39 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning ☕️
05:00 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:14 AM travis_farmer[m]: wow, just realized Tom_L was up early!
06:52 AM _unreal_: maybe he was up late not up early
06:53 AM travis_farmer[m]: that would seem to be true ;-)
07:49 AM JT-Cave: hmm can't log into my nighthawk router it doesn't show up but the wifi works... I have two other routers on the lan so I guess that is the issue
07:55 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:32 AM JT-Cave: nighthawk has a phone app but you have to create an account... I don't want an account I want to set the password to something reasonable...
09:32 AM JT-Cave: looks like the rain is over with
09:33 AM roycroft: upper 20s and sunny here again today
09:33 AM roycroft: which is nice
09:34 AM roycroft: our site manager and arborist are conduting a walk-through of the fair site today with the board to discuss the emerald ash borer and how it will affect our land
09:34 AM roycroft: given the sudden turn of nice weather it shouldn't be too muddy
09:46 AM roguish[m]: mid 80's today, and sunny. nice.
09:50 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:57 AM roycroft: we got up to 31 yesterday - an all-time record for the day
10:40 AM roguish[m]: oooh... you mean like 87.8 F
10:41 AM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (327KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/DiSAGqIGdjMivcYwDWoPwJUN/20230429_103522.jpg >

10:41 AM JT[m]: Finished sanding
10:56 AM Vq_ is now known as Vq
11:32 AM JT-Woodshop: roycroft, I've sanded the bowl down to 2500, after applying the T&T how should I buff that out?
01:22 PM travis_farmer[m]: anybody ever heard of a rotary phase converter building up a static charge, and letting off an arc like a gunshot?
01:22 PM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (3370KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/wKWWJXkFHCSQBFNocdXYMwUt/20230429_134411.jpg >
01:50 PM Unterhaus_: I think the easiest way to get an arc is to have an open circuit.
01:50 PM Unterhaus_: is there a way to see the hal pins in a configuration without running lcnc?
01:51 PM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, the 3-phase table saw was just shut off, before it did it...
01:53 PM CloudEvil: travis_farmer[m]: I guess that a cap failure could od that
01:53 PM Unterhaus_: you turned off a tool and then it arced?
01:54 PM Unterhaus_: this doesn't seem surprising to me
01:54 PM CloudEvil: I would examine the caps.
01:54 PM travis_farmer[m]: i looked at the caps, they looked fine, as far as i could see...
01:54 PM Unterhaus_: if I search for debugging hal, I get programming results
01:55 PM Unterhaus_: the field in the motor collapsed and caused a high voltage
01:55 PM Unterhaus_: you might just not have seen it happen before
01:55 PM travis_farmer[m]: it was loud, first i have heard it do it
01:58 PM travis_farmer[m]: i nearly had to change my shorts, as i was standing right beside it ;-)
01:58 PM Unterhaus_: a person on FB is getting this error: "custom_postgui.hal:11: Pin 'gmoccapy.toolchange-change' does not exist"
02:02 PM JT-Woodshop: emc does not lie
02:03 PM JT-Woodshop: pretty much impossible to trouble shoot from that
02:05 PM Unterhaus_: it seems like a component is missing or misspelled. They said they are following the example on the lcnc site
02:08 PM Unterhaus_: fb is no place to debug hal files, I'm going to suggest they post on the forum
02:09 PM JT-Woodshop: that's a good idea
02:09 PM JT-Woodshop: and post in the correct section
02:12 PM Unterhaus_: what section? Setting up lcnc?
02:13 PM Unterhaus_: gmocapy?
02:13 PM Unterhaus_: or basic configuration?
02:14 PM Unterhaus_: I told him to post it in gmocapy section
02:17 PM JT-Woodshop: gomcappy
02:17 PM JT-Woodshop: or however it's spelled
02:18 PM Unterhaus_: turns out it's gmoccapy
02:19 PM pcw-home: Unterhaus_: you can test/debug with halcmd
02:20 PM pcw-home: and halshow
02:22 PM Unterhaus_: thanks
02:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Unterhaus_: don't reward bad behavior, if they only posted their errors via fax would you still be trying to help? :p
02:24 PM Unterhaus_: I'm just trying to rope them in until the sunk cost fallacy ruins their life
02:24 PM Unterhaus_: happened to me, now I'm on a mission
02:25 PM Unterhaus_: but also, I only do things when I need to learn it myself. Not gmoccapy though
02:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: fax might be acceptable if they are stranded at a remote outpost with all other forms of communication down and getting their machine running again will allow them to properly prepare their vegetables before blanching before help arrives
02:53 PM seb_kuzm1nsky is now known as seb_kuzminsky
02:56 PM Davefrom3DPandME: Does anyone know the discord contact for the chap who goes by the name of cakeslob on github? Looking to find an easier way to communicate with him than over an unrelated Remora github issue!
03:11 PM travis_farmer[m]: cakeslob: you have a visitor, see Dave from 3DPandME#2881
03:13 PM travis_farmer[m]: may not be at his computer...
04:33 PM Unterhaus_: if he's on, it's CAKESLOB in ALL CAPS. Only time he shoults
04:34 PM Unterhaus_: can find him on the forum too
04:44 PM XXCoder: great blondihack and joe videos today
04:47 PM XXCoder: very much "clearance is clearance" on joes spotface stage lol
04:57 PM Contract_Pilot: Ahh
04:58 PM Contract_Pilot: Another 3 Hours lost unsuccessful hunt for an tool I know I have LOL!
04:58 PM CloudEvil: :)
05:02 PM XXCoder: oh theres easy way to find it
05:02 PM XXCoder: just order another one
05:03 PM XXCoder: you'll find it right after it ships.
05:03 PM Contract_Pilot: Yea,
05:03 PM Contract_Pilot: Mondays work... https://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/CPLD-QFP100-Xeltek-Adapter.jpg
05:04 PM Contract_Pilot: it's a 350 tool. https://www.ebay.com/itm/390534046141
05:06 PM Contract_Pilot: I can wait till i find it lol! Or just home brew somthing if needed.
05:59 PM XXCoder: oh wow new project binky video. been a bit.
06:30 PM skunkworks[m]: sara in tuned also. (although she has a few a week)
07:27 PM CAKESLOB: ohh i feel like mr popular now
07:27 PM CAKESLOB: Davefrom3DPandME hey whats the issue
07:53 PM skunkworks[m]: CAKESLOB: Popular is a double edged sward...
08:37 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:47 PM Unterhaus_: CAKESLOB how can I tell if my firmware loaded correctly? Does it spit something out on the debug serial port?
08:53 PM roycroft: perhaps it's the case that you'll know it loaded correctly if it works
08:53 PM Unterhaus_: I didn't really want to dig that deeply into it atm
08:54 PM Unterhaus_: it's got a uart connection
08:56 PM * roycroft has been dealing with a power outage since noon today that affects an entire city
08:56 PM roycroft: people are now starting to demand that i get their circuits back online, saying it's unacceptable that they've been down for 7 hours
08:56 PM roycroft: my fiber huts have been on generator power since the outage started
08:57 PM roycroft: the people demanding that i restore their circuits do not have power, or have generator power that powers their offices but not their fiber gear
08:57 PM roycroft: i'm not sure what i can do about that
08:59 PM roycroft: city hall and the police have called, demanding to know why i haven't restored power to other city facilities when they never had an outage
08:59 PM roycroft: i pointed out that the city hall and pd network gear is on their generators
08:59 PM roycroft: and the water treatment plant, etc. are not on generators
09:00 PM roycroft: somehow they don't understand that, because they're complaining about an internet outage, not a power outage
09:00 PM roycroft: and they don't see any relationship between the two
09:00 PM * roycroft is going to be collecting a lot of overtime today from the billing to the whiners
09:01 PM XXCoder: reminds me of that tech support about computer that refused to turn on
09:01 PM XXCoder: so after some work, customer finally looked under desk and told that its too dark to see if its plugged in
09:01 PM XXCoder: turns out the area was having a blackout.
09:02 PM Unterhaus_: curious that they wouldn't have network gear on the generator
09:03 PM Unterhaus_: how much do you charge for each whiny phone call?
09:06 PM roycroft: it costs an hour every time i deal with them
09:06 PM roycroft: well
09:07 PM roycroft: it costs another hour if it's been more an hour since last time i talked to them
09:07 PM roycroft: and we're at $200/hour for my time on the weekends now
09:07 PM roycroft: i get half of that
09:07 PM Unterhaus_: every time they call take a 45 minute break
09:07 PM roycroft: i'm not trying to milk it
09:08 PM roycroft: i actually have other things to do
09:08 PM Unterhaus_: I finally found the thing on how to set up the remora sd card
09:08 PM roycroft: i wish they would just understand that when power is restored, services will be restored
09:08 PM roycroft: it's not that difficult a concept
09:08 PM Unterhaus_: I can see how some people might get confused about that though
09:09 PM roycroft: at first, sure
09:10 PM Unterhaus_: it's not a series of tubes?
09:17 PM roycroft: you actually have to give senator stevens a little credit on that
09:17 PM roycroft: first of all, it's an extremely amusing, and long-lasting meme
09:17 PM roycroft: second, and sadly, it demonstrates that he understood technology better than the average senator
09:17 PM roycroft: to most it's just magic
09:18 PM Unterhaus_: I could never follow what he was trying to say
09:19 PM Unterhaus_: my remora delay right now is I don't trust myself to have wired it right, and it's set up to power (or smoke) the rpi from the controller board
09:20 PM roycroft: it was in the context of net neutrality
09:21 PM roycroft: iirc he said "the internet is not something you dump stuff on - it's a series of tubes"
09:21 PM roycroft: he was complaining that people were streaming videos and that slowed down his emails
09:21 PM roycroft: i think he was trying to say that if the internet gets congested it slows down
09:22 PM roycroft: but i can't really speculate about how his mind worked beyond that, because trying to figure out how his brain worked would make my brain hurt
09:22 PM roycroft: and i don't need that right now
09:55 PM CAKESLOB: thats ok, yeah it will show your print some stuff on the serial and print the config you loaded
09:57 PM CAKESLOB: thats why i like using colours with the wires, makes it easier, also www.pinout.xyz i spend a lot of time just double checking, then i paint markered my personal connectors with the colours
09:59 PM CAKESLOB: but dont make it power the pi from the board
10:06 PM roycroft: power to the people, not to the pi
10:57 PM roycroft: eta on power restoral is now 11pm
10:57 PM roycroft: it was 8:30, but that time has passed
