01:12 AM Deejay: moin
04:24 AM travis_farmer[m]: Morning ☕️
04:33 AM CaptHindsight[m]: too early for morning
04:33 AM travis_farmer[m]: and yet, i slept in... ;-)
04:33 AM XXCoder: what is "morning"?
04:35 AM CaptHindsight[m]: it's what people do after a loss
05:02 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:11 AM rmu:
06:12 AM Tom_L: morning
06:22 AM Tom_L: 39°F
06:24 AM travis_farmer[m]: 36F
06:37 AM JT-Cave: 44°F and sunny with a high of 61°F
06:38 AM JT-Cave: going to The Depot for early dinner today
06:38 AM JT-Cave: everything they have is good
06:38 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I finally cracked the nut for updating the ini with more or less joints... just gotta finish up the code
07:03 AM cakeslob: Dammit awake at 7am. This is like a work day except I'm less hungover and actually awake
07:18 AM * travis_farmer[m] was awake at 3:30AM
08:31 AM roscogamer[m]: hello im looking at useing a mesa 7173 for my opeerator console bit the in/outputs bank doesnt have enough inputs for my needs.
08:31 AM roscogamer[m]: it also has a bank for a keypad, im not using a key pad can i just use those inputs for buttons aswell or can i only you a keypad for that
08:31 AM roscogamer[m]: im looking at useing them foor a coolant and some soft keys on the side of the monitor
08:35 AM roscogamer[m]: aanother question im using a mesa 7i96 as main board and a 7i84 for more io in the controll cabinet. the mesa 7i84 is connected to the 7i96 using the smart serial connection can i just add the 7i73 or do i need some sort of switch in there
08:38 AM JT-Cave: only one smart serial card can be connected to the 7i96, to use more you would have to use a https://mesaus.com/product/7i74/
08:39 AM JT-Cave: and yes you can configure the 7i73 to use all inputs
08:40 AM JT-Cave: https://ibb.co/SXs7YpK
08:52 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, nice.. you push any code yet?
09:25 AM JT-Cave: no, but making headway
09:26 AM Tom_L: awesome
09:27 AM JT-Cave: yup the code just keeps getting better
09:56 AM cakeslob: And just like workday I'm gonna be late
09:56 AM Tom_L: so set your clocks ahead 30 min
10:43 AM roycroft: happy earth day, folks
11:27 AM JT-Shop: nap time
12:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: hackfest here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/8498381080?pwd=REEzTW4xMngvQWk3SlhqQUdmWFNUdz09
01:21 PM JT-Shop: looks like a festive eating time
01:21 PM JT-Shop: I recognize one person... Andy
01:23 PM Tom_L: oh, you join the meeting?
01:23 PM Tom_L: got no sound here or i might
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/44828-remora-ethernet-nvem-cnc-board?start=840#269536
01:28 PM JT-Shop: did for a bit
01:28 PM JT-Shop: no sound so I left
01:29 PM Tom_L: i'd be better off hearing it here opposed to being there anyway since i have a bad ear
01:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 🦻
01:39 PM JT-Shop: yeah I'm deaf in one ear and can't hear with the other lol
01:40 PM Tom_L: mine is horrible where there is alot of background noise
01:40 PM Tom_L: the aid just makes it worse
01:40 PM JT-Shop: my sister's hearing aid can filter that background noise out
01:41 PM Tom_L: i think this one was supposed to
01:41 PM Tom_L: i just have one though
01:41 PM JT-Shop: I tried them when I was in Broussard La
01:41 PM JT-Shop: she changed modes with her phone
01:41 PM roguish[m]: Tom_L: what brand and model do you have?
01:42 PM Tom_L: oticon but dunno the model
01:42 PM JT-Shop: my sister got hers at costco
01:42 PM Tom_L: also bluetooth..
01:42 PM roguish[m]: i'm getting close. right ear is bad, and has really loud tinitus
01:43 PM Tom_L: mine popped while on a flight years back and has gradually gotten worse
01:43 PM Tom_L: also tinitus...
01:43 PM JT-Shop: all us old farts have tinitus lol
01:43 PM Tom_L: huh??
01:43 PM JT-Shop: what?
01:43 PM Tom_L: that's why i'd rather be on irc honestly
01:44 PM JT-Shop: I want to get some but dunno where to go here in this small town and forgot to talk to my doctor about them the other day
01:44 PM Tom_L: i've heard those from costco are good
01:45 PM Tom_L: i hardly use mine but when i do it's usually not in a croud or noisy environment since it just enhances the noise too
01:45 PM JT-Shop: that sucks
01:46 PM roguish[m]: my sister has been wearing a pair about 15 years now. raves about Costco brands, service and prices.
01:46 PM JT-Shop: nearest costco is Memphis
01:46 PM Tom_L: i let my costco business card expire since we generally go to sams instead
01:46 PM roguish[m]: they're big names, just private labelled
01:47 PM Tom_L: https://www.oticon.com/
01:48 PM roguish[m]: aids can be frickin expensive.....
01:48 PM Tom_L: 3.7k
01:48 PM JT-Shop: sister paid $1500
01:48 PM roguish[m]: that's pretty inexpensive....
01:48 PM Tom_L: https://www.oticon.com/solutions/more-hearing-aids
01:48 PM JT-Shop: might be worth a trip to Memphis but it takes a few visits I think
01:49 PM Tom_L: more 1 is what this one says
01:51 PM Tom_L: i'd heard the govt was gonna step in and make them alot cheaper but that's just hearsay
01:52 PM roguish[m]: Tom_L: that's BS . they finally allow over the counter, but that's it......
01:52 PM Tom_L: ahh
01:54 PM Tom_L: i doubt i get another one anyway
01:54 PM travis_farmer[m]: there, i got my server rack unloaded, and moved down to the basement. and i staged the 3 servers and 1 heavy APC UPS on the first floor of the house. will move them down to the basement when i re-gain some energy... 400 pounds of equipment and several trips up and down the stairs is a lot of work...
01:54 PM roguish[m]: travis_farmer: yeah, the crud takes it out of ya for a while....
01:55 PM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, but it still needs to be done
01:55 PM JT-Shop: https://www.costco.com/hearing-aid-center.html
01:58 PM roguish[m]: ya may not need to be a Costco paying member to go to the hearing aid department. I'm not sure, but anyone can go to their pharmacy - no membership required.
01:58 PM roguish[m]: cheapest pharmacy around
01:58 PM Tom_L: that philips one looks alot like mine
01:59 PM Tom_L: at least the charge base
01:59 PM Tom_L: it might be a different story if you need both ears
02:02 PM Tom_L: i hate trying to edit code i wrote 10 yrs ago..
02:03 PM JT-Shop: lol
02:04 PM Tom_L: salestax import... they added a separate tax for food and i have to ignore it now
02:04 PM roycroft: sales tax on food?
02:04 PM * roycroft has never heard of that
02:05 PM roycroft: i've lived in two states and traveled through several others that charges sales tax, but i've never paid sales tax on food
02:06 PM JT-Shop: Take-home grocery food items in Missouri are taxed by the state at a rate of 1.225%, which goes mainly to a fund for public schools. Localities levy additional grocery sales taxes at varying rates which can add up to 8%
02:06 PM roycroft: makes sense
02:06 PM Tom_L: ours has been the same as other goods until now
02:07 PM roycroft: take the most regressive form of taxation and make it even more regressive
02:07 PM Tom_L: anyway.. gonna fix it another day. boys wanna go look at new trucks
02:08 PM roycroft: why not go all the way and charge sales tax on rent, water, and electricity too?
02:08 PM Tom_L: don't give them any ideas
02:08 PM roycroft: heck, charge sales tax on sewer services
02:08 PM roycroft: nobody should be able to poop tax-free!
02:09 PM * roycroft needs to work on his pickup today
02:10 PM roycroft: i did the dashboard light swap to leds a few weeks ago, and it makes a world of difference, but i installed the turn signal indicator lamps backwards, so they haven't worked since then
02:10 PM roycroft: today i'm going to fix them
02:10 PM roycroft: fortunately removing the instrument cluster isn't that difficult in my vehicle
02:10 PM roycroft: but i hate working on cars, even for easy stuff
02:12 PM JT-Shop: took like a month to replace two $10 parts on the C5 a while back... I did replace them with $15 bronze parts instead of OEM plastic
02:12 PM roycroft: this should take me a couple hours
02:12 PM roycroft: maybe a bit longer
02:12 PM roycroft: it's 20 degrees today!
02:13 PM roycroft: but it's been raining all week, so it's still too wet to do yard work
02:13 PM JT-Shop: it currently has a damper sensor open circuit and I'm not fixing that
02:13 PM roycroft: we'll have light rain tomorrow and monday, and then temps in the 20s for at least a week, and sunshine every day
02:14 PM * roycroft declares that spring has officially arrived in eugene
04:02 PM JT[m]: My sister has Jabra
04:38 PM JT[m]: We managed to pick prom night in Fredericktown to go out and eat
04:55 PM roguish[m]: well shit howdy, put on your best boots....
04:58 PM JT[m]: It's the most crowded I've seen The Depot
05:11 PM roycroft: well that went nicely
05:11 PM roycroft: fixing my turn signal indicators took 25 minutes
05:12 PM roycroft: vs. the 2 hours the last time i removed the instrument cluster
05:12 PM roycroft: i guess practice makes perfect
05:12 PM XXCoder: nice
05:13 PM roycroft: i'm about to start making an enclosure for my laser engraver/cutter
05:13 PM roycroft: i just ordered an exhaust fan for it, so i should be able to blow all the smoke and nasty smells outside
06:18 PM JT-Shop: polluting the earth...
06:57 PM roycroft: speaking of polluting the earth, conventional wisdom seems to be that when one egraves leather one needs to spray on resolene or something similar to seal it, which is a rather wasteful process
06:58 PM roycroft: i have found that if i dab the engraved area with a damp sponge, then lightly wipe the entire piece of leather with the damp sponge, and let it dry, i can then use a dauber to apply the resolene without it smearing
07:01 PM roycroft: i have abandoned for now my idea of making stencils with my vinyl cutter to use for spraying labels on my fabric/plastic tool bags - it wasn't working out very well, and i did not want to invest a lot of time in it
07:02 PM roycroft: it's a lot easier to just engrave leather badges with the labels and apply the badges to the bags
07:02 PM roycroft: if i stich them on they'll probably be a lot more durable than stencils anyway
08:05 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:27 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: woo! i got qtdragon working on my mill
11:28 PM Tom_L: quite a feat
11:29 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: i had to install a special kernel because the one on bookworm cant communicate well with my mesa card apparentrly
11:30 PM Tom_L: what ver kernel did you end up with?
11:31 PM Tom_L: and did you do any special tweaks to it?
11:31 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: 6.3, as compiled by rodw
11:31 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: i have one of those dreaded realtec NICs
11:32 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: the rodw kernel and DKMS driver did it, got the network latency low enough to make communication with the mesa card possible
11:32 PM Tom_L: iirc 4.19 was the last 'good' one and the 5.xx are questionable at best
11:32 PM Tom_L: 6.xx may be better
11:34 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: 6.3 definitely works for me. the computer im using is kind of shit so i still had to reduce the servo thread frequency to 666Hz
11:35 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: it does have enough performance for me, the machine rapids are only 100IPM
11:36 PM Tom_L: a bit slow for a production machine but maybe ok for hobby
11:37 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: yeah it is this tiny machine, roughly equivalent to a tormach PCNC440
11:37 PM Tom_L: running an old copy of wheezy with rtai i get around 240ipm if i push it
11:37 PM Tom_L: mine is a homebuilt desktop mill
11:37 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: 100IPM is a limitation of the old-ass steppers that thing has. The original controller board would not move any faster than 40IPM
11:38 PM Tom_L: ahh
11:38 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: i raised the voltage a hair and used more modern drivers with microstepping
11:38 PM Tom_L: mine are on a 48v supply with gecko drivers
11:38 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: that and linuxcnc's superior trajectory planning gets me really nice performance
11:39 PM Tom_L: good
11:39 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: the old controller did not have lookahead at all
11:39 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: it would decelerate on every segment
11:39 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: and arcs caused it to hesitate several ms for some reason
11:39 PM Tom_L: that would suck
11:39 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: it was meant to be an educational machine, but the mechanics are surprisingly good
11:40 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: all good ballscrews, epoxy granite base
11:40 PM Tom_L: nice
11:40 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: 1HP R8 spindle with pneumatic power drawbar and 3/4 (TTS-like) collet system
11:41 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: it only goes to 5000RPM but that coupled with the slow feeds goes ok i guess
11:41 PM Tom_L: i didn't want a high speed spindle on mine rather opting for low end torque
11:41 PM Tom_L: 5500 tops
11:43 PM Tom_L: 1.2kw
11:44 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: nice
11:44 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: the machine running linuxcnc is a crappy Lenovo all-in-one i got for $100
11:44 PM Tom_L: success stories are always good to hear
11:44 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: it has a touchscreen, main reason why i got it
11:46 PM * Tom_L heads to bed
11:46 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: i still got a lot of stuff to do on it, i havent hooked up the spindle PWM speed control, encoder, MPG or any probing yet. i have most of the parts but i wanted to make some chips...
11:46 PM * JoseIgnacioRomer uploaded an image: (1072KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/PMSEmukXTBKOOLtMkfkzanNM/image.png >
11:47 PM Tom_L: what size vise is that?
11:47 PM Tom_L: 4"?
11:48 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: 3!
11:48 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: the entire machine bed is 6x12
11:49 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: err the travel i mean
11:50 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trzO8H6tKW8
11:50 PM Tom_L: simple test cut
11:54 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: nice
11:54 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: sounds pretty rigid
11:54 PM Tom_L: what are those parts? screw mounts or something?
11:54 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: wheel hubs for my wife's mail cart
11:54 PM Tom_L: ahh
11:55 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: i made them to adapt cheap lawnmower wheels to those carts
