12:44 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning ☕️
01:26 AM Deejay: moin
02:35 AM Lee[m]1: What's the perceived latest / best / simplest way to compensate for unlevel engraving surfaces?
02:35 AM Lee[m]1: My use case is milling PCBs on copper clad
02:35 AM XXCoder: theres interesting program to probe surface then adjust gcode to it
02:36 AM XXCoder: i have linj for it, its pretty old so not sure if theres newer
02:36 AM Lee[m]1: I see a few possible options, but all range in release date / level of support and complexity
02:36 AM Lee[m]1: "linj"?
02:36 AM XXCoder: *link
02:37 AM Lee[m]1: I see that scotta has a python script, but it's a few years old now and based on Python 2.7
02:38 AM XXCoder: https://www.cnccookbook.com/heres-quick-way-engrave-irregular-surface/
02:39 AM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/dzX0JXX5iCc
02:39 AM XXCoder: yeah 8 years old, pretty old
02:40 AM XXCoder: comment newest is 2 months ago and it got reply nice
02:44 AM Lee[m]1: I'll take a look, thanks
02:44 AM Lee[m]1: Sounds like Scott's solution might still be the most recent
02:44 AM Lee[m]1: https://github.com/scottalford75/LinuxCNC-3D-Printing/tree/master/compensation
02:45 AM XXCoder: interesting. hopefully it will work well.
02:48 AM Lee[m]1: I'll let you know, thanks
02:48 AM XXCoder: welcome
04:36 AM Tom_L: morning
05:43 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:46 AM Bing[m]: morning
05:47 AM Deejay: afternoon
06:34 AM * travis_farmer[m] had to make a fresh cup of coffee, as the first was made at 1:30am
08:54 AM * travis_farmer[m] has started the furnace in the shop...
09:30 AM travis_farmer[m]: Hmmm, i was doing well, but then got very dizzy. i don't think the furnace fumes were coming back inside, as i could not smell any... perhaps low blood sugar. that happens now and then...
09:32 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Do you have a CO monitor? Sounds like it could be CO poisoning.
09:33 AM travis_farmer[m]: no, perhaps i should get one...
09:33 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: They are a very good idea anytime you have combustion going on. I have one in my trailer.
09:35 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, i will get one. the furnace is direct vent to outside, but if CO, could still have a internal leak in the furnace. the alarm will tell. inside the house now, and feeling a little better.
09:46 AM MikeM[m]: How old is the furnace? If it has an internal leak, it could be a cracked heat exchanger. That said, I would double check the venting to make sure it is also still properly attached.
09:47 AM travis_farmer[m]: it is a LP camper furnace with maybe 15 - 20 hours on it
10:14 AM roycroft: well, ups have decided finally to send my router down from portland, and claim that it will be delivered today
10:22 AM roguish[m]: travis_farmer: CO2 is nasty. be careful. so is CO
10:23 AM roguish[m]: lost power for about an hour this morning. good thing I have a gas stove and matches to make coffee.....
10:23 AM travis_farmer[m]: 👍️🙂
10:24 AM roycroft: happy friday, all, btw
10:25 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: CO2 you know about right quick because your body senses excess CO2. That is how you know to breath. CO binds to hemoglobin more than O2 and can kill you even after you are removed from the source (builds up over time in your blood). Inert gasses are scary because you don't get a build up of CO2 so you just pass out and die.
10:25 AM roycroft: i would get the co monitor
10:26 AM roycroft: any time a combustable fuel is used indoors it's prudent to have one
10:26 AM roguish[m]: I think they're both heavier that air... and sink to and sit in low places.... as I recall from science class many decades ago
10:26 AM roycroft: yes
10:27 AM roycroft: although if there is any real air circulation at all they will, for the most part, mix with the ambient air
10:27 AM travis_farmer[m]: roguish: "I think they're both heavier that air", i was just going to ask that, as far as monitor placement. Thanks 🙂
10:28 AM roycroft: combination smoke and co detectors are common and pass code
10:28 AM roycroft: and those are usually located near the ceiling
10:28 AM roycroft: but i would recommend installing a stand-alone co monitor at waist height or below
10:29 AM roguish[m]: Stormy Daniels for president !!!!!!
10:29 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: C0 and C02 are usually mixed enough that the placement is not critical. I have mine at outlet height as that is where they are plugged in 🙂
10:29 AM roycroft: i have very mixed feelings about that whole situation
10:29 AM roycroft: i'm happy that justice is being served
10:29 AM roguish[m]: someone needs to cap his ass
10:29 AM roycroft: but i'm very sad that this is happening in our country
10:30 AM roycroft: not the alleged political crap
10:31 AM roycroft: anyway, i'm dealing with it by not listening to npr today
10:31 AM roguish[m]: agree to that
10:31 AM roycroft: i'm listening to the local classical music station that have a very strict policy of never mentioning any current events other than the weather forecast and upcoming concerts
10:32 AM roguish[m]: try this one online... pretty amazing for older, good rock.... https://www.kvhs.com/
10:33 AM roycroft: my replacement internet radio for my kitchen arrived last night
10:33 AM roycroft: it also has an fm tuner
10:34 AM roycroft: so i can listen to local stations on it without having to stream them (a ridiculous thing to do), as well as my favorite far-away statins
10:34 AM roycroft: i was listening to wxrt for a bit last night, but it's just not the same
10:34 AM roycroft: back when i lived in chicago it was an edgy, alternative-rock station (well, it was growing into that)
10:35 AM roycroft: that was 40+ years ago
10:35 AM roycroft: sadly, it's still the same playlist as it was back then
10:35 AM roycroft: so now it's not edgy, alternarive music
10:35 AM roycroft: it's classic rock/oldies
10:35 AM roguish[m]: I sit in an FM hole. not much signal here.
10:35 AM roycroft: i'll check out kvhs.com
10:36 AM roguish[m]: good jazz station https://kcsm.org/
10:37 AM roycroft: the new radio claims to support digital broadcast stations, and most of the stations i listen to have an hd signal, but the tuner found none of them when i scanned for them last night
10:37 AM roycroft: there used to be a really good jazz station in vancouver that i listened to when i lived up by the border, but i can't seem to find it now
10:37 AM roycroft: it either changed format or went away
10:46 AM unterhaus: someone bought a batch of radio stations around here and some are only broadcasting a message that the station went out of business
10:46 AM unterhaus: I have never heard them properly identify the station, but it's possible I haven't listened long enough
10:47 AM unterhaus: we only have the college station, top 40 and country here. I guess people that still listen to radio mostly listen to country
10:48 AM roycroft: only country? or western too?
10:48 AM unterhaus: both kinds of music
10:48 AM unterhaus: is there really any western anymore?
10:50 AM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLL7Eu7mdIo
10:52 AM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a90w1AIliC8
10:53 AM roycroft: western swing music is alive and well
10:54 AM * roycroft has seen both jody nix and asleep at the wheel
11:06 AM Thorhian7490[m]: LumenPNP 8mm auto feeders are finally online for sale. I really should get one of these small PNPs at some point. https://opulo.io/products/8mm-feeder
11:23 AM JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/H6bhXxl5nRQ?t=622
11:23 AM JT-Shop: what machine is that?
11:28 AM roycroft: looks like a shopsmith done right :)
11:33 AM unterhaus: felder maybe? lots of all-in-one machines. Youtube not loading fast enough for me to see much of it
11:36 AM roycroft: it's not a felder
11:36 AM roycroft: but they make those kinds of combo machines
11:37 AM unterhaus: probably one of the scmi brands?
11:38 AM unterhaus: if you search for all in one table saw jointer planer you will get some more brands
11:38 AM unterhaus: I always wanted one. The felder buying experience doesn't seem great, and nobody likes laguna
11:39 AM roycroft: folks i've talked with who have felder saws love them
11:39 AM roycroft: but they are a hassle to get initially
11:39 AM unterhaus: also, if it gets damaged in shipping, good luck getting parts
11:39 AM roycroft: you place the order, pay a huge deposit, and wait months for the machine to get on the boat
11:40 AM roycroft: at which point you pay the balance, and then wait for the boat to cross the ocean
11:40 AM roycroft: then wait for customs clearane
11:40 AM roycroft: then wait for delivery
11:40 AM unterhaus: that's what I meant by their buying experience
11:40 AM unterhaus: they got your money, good luck
11:41 AM roycroft: but the machines are amazing
11:41 AM unterhaus: the complaints I have seen were missing parts or damaged parts and then they flip you off from across the ocean
11:41 AM * roycroft notes that he sent blue spruce toolworks money for some cabinet scrapers a couple months ago, and they won't be delivered until some time next month
11:41 AM roycroft: i don't know about being flipped off
11:42 AM roycroft: but parts do take a long time to get
11:42 AM unterhaus: the stories I have seen about how non-responsive they are made me decide I would never get one
11:43 AM unterhaus: at least you know laguna is flipping you off, with felder you might not even get that much
11:43 AM roycroft: i've heard they can take a while to respond
11:43 AM roycroft: but completely ignoring people - i've not heard that
11:44 AM roycroft: it's entire possible, of course
11:44 AM roycroft: but i wonder if some of the folks who say that are millennials who can only tolerate instant gratification, and if a time zone difference causes a delay in communication they consider the vendor completely non-responsive
11:47 AM unterhaus: there is a guy on sawmill creek that sells felder, he seems helpful
11:47 AM unterhaus: I don't think millennials have felder kind of money or interest for the most part
11:50 AM unterhaus: didn't find that much felder hate on sawmill creek
11:52 AM unterhaus: some guy got quoted $2000 to align his panel saw. It's a commercial machine, you have to expect they aren't going to work for free
12:12 PM roycroft: if my shop were larger i'd be interested in a felder sliding table saw
12:12 PM roycroft: it would have to be quite a bit larger, though
12:12 PM roycroft: because those saws are really big
12:38 PM unterhaus: I am not sure if I have room for a combo machine or not. I have the long fence on my powermatic and it's problematic in my shop
12:39 PM unterhaus: I would really like a jointer planer of that quality though
12:41 PM skunkworks[m]: dad has an oliver jointer.. It is nice..
12:41 PM skunkworks[m]: must be like 14 inches
12:46 PM roycroft: a big old oliver jointer would be very nice
12:46 PM skunkworks[m]: yes - old.. 🙂
12:47 PM roycroft: it's more likely 12" than 14"
12:47 PM skunkworks[m]: Think it came out of a highschool
12:47 PM roycroft: but it could be 16"
12:47 PM skunkworks[m]: yah - I don't remember
12:47 PM skunkworks[m]: we called it the air craft carrier.
12:47 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i've ever seen a 14" jointer
12:47 PM roycroft: but 12" are fairly common, and 16" common in commercial shops
12:48 PM roycroft: and you're not the first to call it an aircraft carrier :)
12:49 PM skunkworks[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/154684558880
12:49 PM skunkworks[m]: might be a 12 - but I swear the tables are wider than that.
12:50 PM roycroft: the 12" is probably 10x more common than the 16", but there are a lot of 16" jointers, especially olivers
12:52 PM skunkworks[m]: dad thinks it is a 16..
12:52 PM skunkworks[m]: Hi Dad!
12:53 PM skunkworks[m]: yah - I think it is a 16.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/225171615454
12:54 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:16 PM unterhaus: if old olivers are really going for $3500 nowadays, OWWM has really been influential
01:17 PM unterhaus: last thing I need is another hobby, that's generally the case with Olivers
01:30 PM roycroft: $3500 is not a bad price for that machine
01:30 PM roycroft: the problem is that it will cost almost that much again to install a modern cutterhead on it
01:40 PM skunkworks[m]: Yah - I don't remember what head the oliver has.. I think it has tapered gibs - but would have to look
01:41 PM skunkworks[m]: It is actually a 440v motor - we are running it on 220. It just take a bit longer to get up to speed. Still more than enough power.
02:12 PM roycroft: the cutterhead should be replaced if it's square
02:12 PM roycroft: but if it's round, you can use it with the standard knives
02:53 PM JT-Shop: could be some super cell storms this afternoon here
03:08 PM roycroft: we have winter storm warnings in the mountains
03:08 PM roycroft: it's ok here in the valley today, though
03:12 PM JT-Shop: right now it's going around us
03:12 PM roycroft: that's good
03:13 PM roycroft: i don't like the sound of super cell storms
03:22 PM * JT-Shop is going to try the pain stick on the medallion
03:22 PM travis_farmer[m]: pain stick?
03:25 PM JT-Shop: t
03:25 PM travis_farmer[m]: lol, i like pain stick better ;-)
03:31 PM Tom_L: been rather windy here today
03:32 PM Tom_L: 69F
03:33 PM Tom_L: high wind and red flag warnings
03:35 PM JT-Shop: orange flag with tornado watch here
03:38 PM JT-Shop: I wonder how long the paint stick takes to dry...
03:38 PM JT-Shop: it did fill the letters in flush with the surface and the surface was easy to wipe off so it looks promising
03:39 PM JT-Shop: https://radar.weather.gov/station/kpah/standard
03:39 PM Rab: JT-Shop, that's the McMaster-Carr crayon?
03:39 PM Tom_L: those say 24hrs on the mcmaster site
03:41 PM travis_farmer[m]: JT-Shop: hey, there is Farmington (my town here) and Mt Vernon (nearby town here) on that radar map... ;-)
03:48 PM unterhaus: the weather map of the U.S. is weird looking today
03:48 PM unterhaus: strangely disorganized
03:49 PM JT-Shop: might be 50 farmington or at least 48
03:50 PM travis_farmer[m]: likely, Farming Town being the root, it would be common
03:51 PM travis_farmer[m]: i just thought the presence of two town near me was strange
03:58 PM JT-Woodshop: Tom_L, I didn't see that...
03:59 PM JT-Shop: https://www.mcmaster.com/2018T3/
04:00 PM Tom_L: pretty wide application temp range
04:00 PM JT-Shop: yup, but no mention of drying time
04:01 PM Tom_L: Drying Time 24 hrs.
04:01 PM Tom_L: right under yer nose
04:01 PM Tom_L: 3rd line
04:01 PM JT-Shop: well read the whole line and I might find the answer
04:02 PM JT-Shop: I went right to details lol
04:07 PM JT-Woodshop: hmm I should make a sample to test with...
04:07 PM Tom_L: meh go for broke
04:19 PM JT-Woodshop: pm1500 crate is broken down into wood with staples and nails and kindling
04:20 PM Tom_L: no a good day for burning here
04:20 PM Tom_L: s/no/not
04:20 PM Tom_L: unless i wanna burn the whole state
04:21 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (186KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/vlgJLFZJDLSMdfuFxLDfDjll/20230331_162018.jpg >
04:22 PM JT-Shop: not a good day for burning here either
04:22 PM Tom_L: looks good
04:23 PM JT-Shop: thanks, I think it's looking better than the previous tries for sure
04:24 PM JT-Shop: I have some fine wet/dry sandpaper to polish with, seems the wet stones dulled the brass but the sandpaper made it shine... up to 2500 grit lol
04:25 PM Tom_L: i had a littele kit of paper etc for polishing plexiglas
04:25 PM Tom_L: i forget what grit it went up to
04:25 PM Tom_L: but it was rather fine
04:25 PM * JT-Shop goes to make some chicken crack
04:29 PM roycroft: my router is here, but it's missing some parts
04:29 PM roycroft: and festool are gone for the weekend
04:29 PM roycroft: i can still test it this weekend, though
04:30 PM roycroft: that is looking pretty good, jt-shop
04:31 PM roycroft: i go up to about P1500 on plastics before switching over to rubbing/polishing compounds
04:33 PM roycroft: er, i take that back
04:33 PM roycroft: p1500 is as high as i go with granat, but i switch over to platin (which has a soft back) to p4000, then i go with the rubbing/polishing compounds
04:34 PM JT-Shop: thanks
04:34 PM roycroft: the collet wrench and the guide bushing holder are the parts that are missing
04:35 PM roycroft: for the former i can use another wrench for now - i just want the supplied one to keep in the systainer
04:35 PM roycroft: the whole keeping all the tools for a machine near the machine thing
04:35 PM XXCoder: apparently wa state is hiring people to hunt down and kill murder wasps
04:35 PM roycroft: and i won't need to use the guild collar holder this weekend
04:36 PM XXCoder: wa states been having problems with murder wasps invasive species
04:36 PM roycroft: i thought they had them under control, xxcoder
04:36 PM XXCoder: me too.
04:36 PM roycroft: i thought they found two nests in whatcom county, and dealt with them
04:36 PM roycroft: but maybe they're back
04:36 PM XXCoder: yeah might be re-imported
04:37 PM Tom_L: wonder how the job description goes
04:37 PM Tom_L: now hiring... wasp bait
04:37 PM XXCoder: https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/state/washington/article273789955.html#storylink=rss
04:37 PM XXCoder: have fun
04:37 PM roycroft: "now hiring - murder wasp murderer"
04:38 PM XXCoder: govermentjobs posting much less fun
04:38 PM XXCoder: "Giant Hornet & Wood Boring Insect Trapper - Lead "
04:39 PM Tom_L: contract killers
04:57 PM roycroft: our forecast currently says for today "light rain (22.13mm)"
04:58 PM roycroft: if that's light rain i hope don't ever get heavy rain
04:59 PM Tom_L: i remember one time the weather man said 100% chance of snow and it was sunny all day long
05:00 PM Tom_L: and it wasn't on april 1st
05:01 PM roycroft: tomorrow's forecast says "rain (10.04mm)"
05:01 PM roycroft: so i guess "light rain" is more rain than "rain"
05:03 PM XXCoder: fun inheirance machining video today
05:03 PM unterhaus: the last snowstorm this year was supposed to be 4" and we had some flurries
05:03 PM unterhaus: I will gladly accept errors like that from the weather report
05:04 PM roycroft: we have a chance of snow in the forecast for tuesday, but then it gets into the upper teens starting wednesday, and up to 20 on sunday next
05:04 PM roycroft: so spring may be arriving finally
05:04 PM unterhaus: they are pretty proud of their weather department at Penn State
05:04 PM unterhaus: accuweather is also in town
05:04 PM roycroft: but right now it's the weekend
05:05 PM roycroft: i really hope that extraction on this router is as good as folks say it is
05:05 PM roycroft: that's the primary reason i bought it
05:05 PM unterhaus: We're supposed to get those thunderstorms tomorrow, with 70F degrees
05:06 PM roycroft: my porter-cable 7518 is a real beast (i bought mine before black and decker bought porter-cable and destroyed their products)
05:06 PM roycroft: but it has zero extraction
05:06 PM roycroft: and since it's such a huge router i'm usually using it when i'm removing a lot of material
05:07 PM * roycroft heads out to the shop
05:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: warm, humid and rain here
05:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://blockclubchicago.org/2023/03/31/tornadoes-hail-destructive-wind-possible-friday-as-storms-expected-to-batter-chicago/
05:51 PM robotustra: evening
05:54 PM robotustra: I put my mini text cad on github. if you would like to try it you are welcome: should be easy to build for linux users: https://github.com/robotustra/textcad.git
05:56 PM JT-Woodshop: how is that different from f-engrave?
06:00 PM robotustra: it's different. it's very simple and does not do engraving.
06:01 PM robotustra: the goal is to view/create simple stl from text and jenerate 2D trajectories
06:01 PM robotustra: and save them as g-code
06:01 PM robotustra: "may have bugs" :)
06:02 PM robotustra: for now trajectories are generated in linear appriximation
06:03 PM robotustra: the language is forth like, with RPN, the viewer is parsing input text emmideately
06:03 PM robotustra: can save STLs and generated g-codes
06:05 PM robotustra: also it allows to create complex assembles from text based STL files
06:05 PM robotustra: locate them at selected systemof coordinates, and nest them,
06:06 PM robotustra: and also models are parametrized
06:08 PM JT-Shop: cool
06:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: robotustra: is this you? http://robotustra.ca/
06:10 PM robotustra: yep
06:11 PM robotustra: it's not me, but it's my site :)
06:11 PM robotustra: sure
06:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: close enough
06:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: klosenoff
06:16 PM roycroft: i put a 1/2" radius roundover cutter on the new router and ran it down the side of a 2x4
06:17 PM roycroft: there were maybe a half dozen tiny chips left on the inside of the extraction shroud in the router when i was done, and zero dust or chips in the shop
06:17 PM roycroft: i'd say it works, and is a total win
06:17 PM roycroft: but it is a beast, like my big porter-cable - it's not one i can use on a daily basis
06:18 PM * roycroft knew there would be one more router to get, and now just has to wait for that one on the recon site
06:22 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight[m], I didn't update it for a long time. Shifted to instagram like hypsters :)
06:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: robotustra: i was going to ask you about Belarus, but it's a controversial topic
06:25 PM roycroft: has that ever stopped someone before?
06:27 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight[m], you can go to the channel #eblarus and ask me these questions, we are mainly talking about politics there
06:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: robotustra: thank you
06:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: channel #eblarus tis a silly place
06:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: staying in Camelot
06:51 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight[m], you can dm me, I was out :)
07:26 PM robotustra: CaptHindsight[m], https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8ghXxXyAuw
