04:32 AM Tom_L: morning
04:33 AM XXCoder: yo

04:45 AM XXCoder: .
04:45 AM travis_farmer[m]: having your period, XX? ;-)
04:46 AM XXCoder: just testing discord side. netsplits isnt really handled well by bridge bot. but it recovered on its own,. if buit slow
04:46 AM XXCoder: older version wouldnt recover at all if I recall right.
04:46 AM travis_farmer[m]: ahh, ok. :-)
04:48 AM XXCoder: in least it wasnt 400+ rejoins like bit over month ago after tur fixed and upgraded bot lol
04:48 AM travis_farmer[m]: true, though i did see 22 joins... ;-)
04:49 AM XXCoder: yeah 22 active users. if 30 days no talk bridgebot removes a username
04:49 AM EtherCatSadGuy[m is now known as JT3196[m]
04:49 AM XXCoder: though not from discord and matrix
05:05 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:45 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:48 AM JT-Cave: I set the bios to performance and now it's running at 4200 MHz with very good latency
06:54 AM JT-Cave: I'll be burning some firewood today for sure
06:56 AM Tom_L: starting out at 34F here
06:56 AM Tom_L: hi 54
07:43 AM JT-Cave: 40°F atm high 56°F
07:44 AM JT-Cave: mesact 2 the pc tab is finished if you want to test (try and break) it
11:00 AM Tom_L: ok
11:07 AM mrec: hmm does anyone know an IC which can lower the power consumption of solenoids? (yes I know I can do that with PWM signals and a microcontroller, however maybe there's some dedicated IC available)
11:09 AM jpa-: https://www.ti.com/motor-drivers/solenoid/products.html many? :)
11:10 AM jpa-: though some of them just take PWM in, so i guess it will take some filtering
11:12 AM jpa-: https://www.ti.com/product/DRV120 this one seems to have peak-and-hold current limit built in
11:12 AM Tom_L: will pwm to a solenoid cause more EMF since you're pulsing a coil?
11:13 AM jpa-: with a coil the current will be more constant than with a resistor, but on the other hand it creates more magnetic field
11:15 AM Tom_L: maybe a blocking diode would help that like you normally would use on a relay etc
11:15 AM Rab: mrec, there are also off-the-shelf products: https://instrumentinabox.com/store/
11:15 AM mrec: I have the solenoids already..
11:15 AM jpa-: so just buy the driver board?
11:16 AM Guest1795 is now known as Tommy_123
11:17 AM mrec: I'm thinking about getting some padauk microcontrollers they have a timer/pwm onboard and just wiring them up with a mosfet
11:17 AM mrec: they're <0.1ct/piece
11:18 AM jpa-: sounds like big volumes if 0.1 cent matters :)
11:18 AM mrec: but the better point is they're small. the main controller is an stm32l4 it has some pwms but I would need more.
11:18 AM mrec: I just don't need much function in the solenoid controller
11:19 AM jpa-: i wonder if just changing PWM duty (which is basically equivalent to changing voltage) is enough, most of the commercial solution seem to regulate current instead
11:19 AM mrec: yes it is enough
11:19 AM mrec: well how do you want to regulate the current if not turning the power off? :-)
11:20 AM Tom_L: why do you need reduced current?
11:20 AM mrec: to reduce the heat
11:21 AM mrec: I'm just fine tuning my pick and place head a little bit
11:21 AM Tom_L: ahh this is for pick n place
11:22 AM jpa-: looks like the point of current regulation is to be independent of any voltage sag in cables
11:22 AM jpa-: i guess that doesn't matter for short cables
11:44 AM mrec: the power consumption is not so extraordinary high, though I still want to lower it
11:45 AM mrec: I'm currently using an optocoupler with a mosfet and flyback diode on the other side
12:28 PM robert4: mrec: with a stm32l4 you could probably bitbang the PWM
12:28 PM robert4 is now known as rmu
12:28 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you don't have mesaflash hooked up yet right?
12:47 PM Tom_L: don't get a verify on the 7i80HD-16 board... i know it's working because lcnc starts with it
12:48 PM Tom_L: 7i96s verifies
12:48 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, ^^
12:48 PM Tom_L: 7i92 also verifies
12:49 PM Tom_L: on Machine tab
12:51 PM Tom_L: PC tab seems ok
01:09 PM JT-Shop: thanks
01:28 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (309KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/YrMfRojgCFZUOpxtZuYtbxhF/20230328_132721.jpg >
01:38 PM roguish[m]: fire that mother up....
03:07 PM JT-Shop: gotta get it on the ground and all the things put on it lol
03:09 PM XXCoder: :)
03:19 PM JT-Woodshop: and wire up another outlet to the spider
03:23 PM XXCoder: careful not to make spider too hungry and hot
03:24 PM roycroft: i've been having a rethink about my cnc router project
03:24 PM roycroft: it's a good thing i haven't built it yet :)
03:24 PM XXCoder: yeah lol
03:24 PM roycroft: i'm really thinking that i'll actually use the router in production
03:25 PM roycroft: some the joinery for my lamp frames is too tedious to do by hand and still make money, so i'm thinking i might do some of it on the router
03:25 PM roycroft: and mostly in the ends of the pieces, so i'll need to mount them vertically
03:26 PM XXCoder: can do mini version of that frank guy router
03:26 PM roycroft: that's kind of tricky with the underside router spindle
03:26 PM roycroft: so what i'm pondering is moving the underside spindle over to my table saw, which is kind of a traditional place for that stuff
03:26 PM roycroft: and make the cnc router a dedicated machine
03:26 PM roycroft: with a single spindle
03:27 PM roycroft: this has been a huge hangup on the design - getting all the features on a single machine
03:28 PM roycroft: what i know for sure is that i'm getting tired of that machine not being done
03:29 PM Tom_L: but would you purchase a combo machine for anything else?
03:29 PM roycroft: and i'm sure the channel are tired of hearing me talking about it and not getting it done :)
03:29 PM roycroft: yes, i would, if it made sense to do so
03:29 PM Tom_L: meh, kinda used to it at this point :)
03:31 PM JT-Woodshop: it makes sense to setup the router to make those difficult joints perfectly and fast
03:31 PM roycroft: in this case, the 'combo machine' that i'm designing isn't really sharing components, other than the table top
03:32 PM Tom_L: seems like a major component
03:32 PM roycroft: so it's not really a combo machine so much as two machines mounted on the same cabinet
03:32 PM XXCoder: for joinery id suggest have gap at end of bed
03:32 PM XXCoder: so you could mount wood vertically
03:32 PM roycroft: well i was looking at darrel peart's cnc router a few days ago
03:32 PM roycroft: his spindle overhangs the end of the table
03:32 PM roycroft: so he can mount things vertically on the front of the machine
03:33 PM roycroft: he also has two spindles on his cnc router
03:33 PM roycroft: one behind the other, on two separate x axes
03:33 PM JT-Woodshop: gantry is put away
03:33 PM roycroft: i can see how that could be useful - it could avoid a bunch of tooling changes
03:33 PM * JT-Woodshop hopes the horse cart goes home today
03:34 PM roycroft: but it's not something i'm interested in, at least not now
03:43 PM JT-Woodshop: hmm the engine hoist will not pick the bandsaw from the pallet...
03:45 PM Tom_L: build a heavier engine hoist
03:46 PM JT-Woodshop: it's not wide enough to clear the pallet
03:46 PM Tom_L: cut the corners off the pallet
03:46 PM Tom_L: at least on the top layers
03:47 PM JT-Woodshop: the problem is the motor location and the lifting eye
03:47 PM JT-Woodshop: motor sticks out too much to lower it down
03:47 PM Tom_L: oh
03:49 PM JT-Woodshop: gantry is back in position...
03:50 PM Tom_L: heh
03:51 PM JT-Woodshop: a 1 ton chain fall would be nice right now
03:51 PM JT-Woodshop: the 3 ton chain falls are pretty big
04:16 PM JT-Woodshop: 3 ton chain fall won't work too long... carry on with other stuff until tomorrow
04:17 PM Tom_L: by how much?
04:17 PM Tom_L: block up the A frame
04:18 PM Tom_L: and engage the wheel locks
04:18 PM JT-Woodshop: no wheel locks on the gantry and wow is it heavy... 1 ton chain fall will be here tomorrow
05:03 PM * JT-Woodshop is impressed with the PM1500 and fence is much better than the rikon
05:08 PM JT-Woodshop: blade roller adjustment is quick and accurate...
05:13 PM JT-Woodshop: roycroft, it has a foot brake that drops out the magnetic contactor
05:17 PM roycroft: nice
05:18 PM roycroft: i would have liked a foot brake on my bandsaw, but i did not find one that fit my other criteria that had a foot brake
05:20 PM roycroft: other than the hassles getting a flat table for my jet, i've been very happy with it
05:20 PM roycroft: but if it had a foot brake it would have been even better
05:20 PM JT-Woodshop: I had to watch a video to see that lol
05:20 PM roycroft: although that probably would have meant i could not build a custom base for it
05:20 PM JT-Woodshop: I really like the fence system
05:21 PM JT-Woodshop: you also can't start it with the blade tension lever in the standby or change mode
05:23 PM JT-Woodshop: now if I can get the horse cart out of my shop and put the miter saws back where they belong
05:23 PM XXCoder: fence means you could create custom jigs using it too
05:25 PM roycroft: with the wheels on that thing it would probably take an hour to spin down without the foot brak
05:26 PM roycroft: the fence looks like a biesemeyer style
05:28 PM roycroft: alex snodgrass is coming to the eugene woodcraft store soon
05:28 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to go see/meet him
05:28 PM roycroft: they're charging $10 just to enter the store when he's there, and $150 for his class
05:29 PM XXCoder: enter the store? id wait a day or go earlier. entering fee is ricious
05:30 PM XXCoder: now if its some seperate area to meet sure whatever ill just go around and shop as needed
05:30 PM XXCoder: but entire store?
05:30 PM roycroft: yes, just to go in the store is going to cost $10
05:30 PM roycroft: so if i needed to buy, say, a box of abrasives, the price would go up $10
05:31 PM roycroft: i'll not be going to woodcraft that day, of course
05:31 PM roycroft: and the thing is, all the content of his classes is already on youtube, several times
05:33 PM * Tom_L wonders if he would be worth a $10 admission fee
05:33 PM Tom_L: ....naaa
05:33 PM JT-Woodshop: yup it's a biesemeyer style
05:33 PM XXCoder: sure, pay me $10 and ill go to store with you in it
05:34 PM XXCoder: except transit costs meh
05:34 PM JT-Woodshop: just watch his video lol
05:34 PM XXCoder: yep lol
05:35 PM JT-Woodshop: maybe for $150 you get an autographed deer
05:36 PM JT-Woodshop: gotta take the Insight in for the 35k service tomorrow so bandsaw will wait a day
05:40 PM roycroft: if i want to see alex i'll go to a trade show and pay the cost of admission there
05:41 PM roycroft: because there will be a lot of other interesting things to see besides a demo from him
05:42 PM roycroft: i think for $150 you learn how to make your own deer
05:42 PM roycroft: and he probably won't sign it
05:44 PM roycroft: knowing that woodcraft they would probably charge $20 for his autograph, and split the money with alex
05:44 PM XXCoder: or keep all money and give alex "exposure"
05:45 PM roycroft: this is the store where the owner chewed me out for buying a festool sander from the festool recon store, and then going to woodcraft and spending $400 on abrasives for it
05:45 PM JT-Woodshop: lol
05:45 PM roycroft: i told him that i just paid him more for the abrasives than i paid for the sander, and that i wouldn't have been able to cost justify the sander if i had to pay retail for it
05:45 PM XXCoder: wonderful method of retaining customers reaming them out
05:46 PM roycroft: he told me i should have just bought it from him anyway, and waited to buy abrasives
05:46 PM roycroft: he's not there any more
05:46 PM roycroft: it was a husband and wife team that owned it
05:46 PM roycroft: now it's just the woman
05:46 PM roycroft: i don't know if they divorced or what
05:46 PM roycroft: but she's just as bad as him
05:46 PM XXCoder: hopefully ah guess not
05:47 PM roycroft: she told me "we're libertarians and christians" when i called her out for some deceptive advertising
05:48 PM XXCoder: dont she reconize that statement as being throwing mud on libertarian and christian words?
05:48 PM roycroft: i was like "fine, now i know your political leanings and your religion, but i was asking about your violating the law and trying to deceive your customers"
05:49 PM roycroft: i don't try to understand that
05:49 PM roycroft: i just go there when i have to
05:49 PM roycroft: but any time that i have the time and inclination, i'll drive 2 hours to the portland woodcraft so that i won't have to go to the one that's 15 minutes away
05:50 PM roycroft: or order stuff online
05:50 PM roycroft: anyway, perhaps now you have a better understanding of how a store owner would charge admission just to enter the building
05:50 PM roycroft: alex doesn't need any more exposure, btw - he's very well-known in the woodworking community
05:51 PM JT-Woodshop: when I bought the rikon bandsaw from woodcraft the salesman told me to watch alex's videos
05:52 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGbZqWac0jU
05:52 PM roycroft: there's a link that's apparently worth $150 :)
05:52 PM JT-Woodshop: at first I thought he said alex snotgrass
05:53 PM roycroft: btw, if you're going to use a narrow blade on the saw, i highly recommend the carter narrow blade guide
05:53 PM roycroft: by narrow i'm talking <1/4"
05:53 PM JT-Woodshop: wow that's narrow
05:54 PM roycroft: you only use the one guide, on the top
05:54 PM roycroft: and you don't use side guides at all
05:54 PM roycroft: yeah
05:54 PM roycroft: it's useful for intricate cuts
05:54 PM roycroft: i got one for my jet
05:54 PM roycroft: but then i ran into a great deal on a high end scroll saw a few months later
05:55 PM roycroft: since i got that scroll saw i've not removed my woodslicer blade from the jet bandsaw
05:56 PM JT-Woodshop: I usually have the woodslicer on the bandsaw
05:56 PM roycroft: which is pretty nice, because while it doesn't take terribly long to swap blades on the saw, i really enjoy having the one blade always set up and ready to go
05:56 PM JT-Woodshop: carter doesn't have a guide for the pm1500 even though it says it can use a 1/8" blade
05:57 PM roycroft: they probably do
05:57 PM roycroft: if you're interested, call them
05:57 PM JT-Woodshop: https://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?149002-Response-from-Simple-Green-about-Cleaning-Saw-Bladeshttps://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?149002-Response-from-Simple-Green-about-Cleaning-Saw-Blades
05:57 PM JT-Woodshop: I thought that was interesting
05:57 PM JT-Woodshop: https://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?149002-Response-from-Simple-Green-about-Cleaning-Saw-Blades
05:57 PM JT-Woodshop: sorry double link
05:58 PM roycroft: simple green is a very effective paint remover
05:58 PM roycroft: i would not be surprised at all if it degrades the bonding agent in carbide tips
05:59 PM roycroft: i use simple green all the time - it's one of my favorite cleaners
05:59 PM roycroft: but i know better than to leave anything in contact with it for a long time
06:00 PM JT-Woodshop: it was interesting that they recommended simple green pro hd for soaking saw blades
06:01 PM unterhausen: I have corroded aluminum with simple green in an ultrasonic cleaner
06:01 PM JT-Woodshop: I've been using a 3-1 water to sg for cleaning saw blades but a very short soak time and a good rinse
06:01 PM roycroft: i've never used simple green pro hd
06:01 PM unterhausen: that was before it became common knowledge that it was bad
06:01 PM JT-Woodshop: it's not bad, it's aggressive
06:02 PM unterhausen: it's bad to leave aluminum and some other metals to soak in it
06:02 PM JT-Woodshop: you're not supposed to soak any metal in regular sg
06:03 PM unterhausen: I feel like that didn't become common knowledge until fairly recently
06:03 PM unterhausen: but I am sure I never read the instructions
06:03 PM * JT-Woodshop it about ready to call it a day
06:04 PM JT-Woodshop: been sick since sunday but getting better
06:04 PM JT-Woodshop: I don't have glasses good enough to read instructions!
06:06 PM unterhausen: sometimes I will, like for finishes and such where I'm going to have to live with the results for a long time
06:06 PM JT-Woodshop: that makes sense
06:06 PM unterhausen: many of them are written like nobody is going to read them
06:07 PM JT-Woodshop: I get a kick out of the pages of safety instructions that no one reads and are there just cya
06:08 PM unterhausen: and those are always first, probably because the lawyers say so
06:08 PM JT-Woodshop: yup
06:08 PM unterhausen: I was looking for how to change the cutoff saw and the actual instructions were hidden
06:08 PM unterhausen: change the disk on my cutoff saw^
06:09 PM JT-Woodshop: abrasive cutoff saw?
06:09 PM unterhausen: yeah, it's one of the little milwaukee 12v cutoff saws
06:11 PM * JT-Woodshop listens to Pencil Thin Mustache
06:12 PM unterhausen: if you want to use it as a cutoff tool, you have to take off the circular saw guide, which isn't obvious https://www.milwaukeetool.com/2522-21XC
06:15 PM JT-Woodshop: I'm feeling much better and if I feel great tomorrow I'll take the rest of the week off to be sure
06:16 PM JT-Woodshop: say goodnight Gracie
10:10 PM XXCoder: https://www.reddit.com/r/CNC/comments/125baht/woodpecker_clock/
10:10 PM XXCoder: thats cool
10:10 PM XXCoder: clock with woodpecker on side. it already destroyed some of clock
