01:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning ☕️
02:05 AM TurBoss: good morning
02:06 AM XXCoder: yo
02:29 AM Deejay: moin
05:01 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:01 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:11 AM travis_farmer[m]: i think i may have a problem... every penny i get, i pour into my machine to get it going to the point where i can make money with it. am i just deluding myself? or is it possible that i just have a dream to see it through? i mean, i can't make it work enough to make money, until the new shop is built, simply because i can't do much with only one side of access. the old shop (camper) is just much too small to get around the machine.
05:11 AM travis_farmer[m]: i honestly don't know if i am self sabotaging, or if i am just delaying until the new shop...
05:16 AM travis_farmer[m]: perhaps i am just afraid to start, because of my project track-record, i am just afraid of further failure...
05:18 AM rmu: perfect is the enemy of the good
06:02 AM Tom_L: morning
06:25 AM JT-Cave: for me if I had a router table with a dead spindle in a trailer I'd get a $350 Borla router motor and start making signs but I don't think like most people
06:33 AM Tom_L: will = way
06:36 AM Tom_L: i thought he just got a $$$ tool changer spindle
06:38 AM JT-Cave: I backed up to before that
06:39 AM JT-Cave: I remember when I was young moving from one apartment to another with my 65 mustang including a couch
06:40 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:42 AM JT-Cave: one time I bought a sheet of plywood home on my honda 50...
08:01 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, fixed the pc nic test
08:56 AM skunkworks[m]: we brought home 20ft rebar by slinging it under a truck..
09:12 AM JT-Cave: a unicorn truck LOL
09:19 AM skunkworks[m]: the people at the box store looked at us funny..
09:26 AM skunkworks[m]: For me - I like the process of conversion/fixing problems more than actual machining 😉
09:45 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, didn't know it was broke
09:46 AM travis_farmer[m]: my biggest problem is that i am lower than dirt-poor, but i can't stand to be viewed as such, so i go way out of my way, and beyond my means to be at a level i am deluded to think is good. and i tend to be very impulsive in my purchases, and thought process. but the part that drags me down the most, is a part of my Autism that is an Executive Function Disorder. think of it like a Corvette with a very bad clutch. and the major
09:46 AM travis_farmer[m]: depressive disorder doesn't help much either. for some, getting started on something is as easy as doing it. for me, it takes a very complex set of thought processes to get going. and most of the time, things don't align. telling me how easy it is to do something, or to just feel happier, is like trying to describe color to somebody born completely blind.
09:46 AM Tom_L: i once tied a 25' I beam under my S10 and drug it home http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/patio/patio23.jpg
09:48 AM Tom_L: (salvage of course)
09:48 AM Tom_L: travis_farmer[m], i wouldn't have my mill had i not spend time at the salvage looking for the right metal
09:51 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Z_Column2.jpg
09:52 AM Tom_L: i was however lucky enough to get there on a day they'd just dropped some new material off so i was able to replace that plate under the Z column
09:52 AM Tom_L: i wasn't too happy about that old one
09:52 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Welding/Frame_Weld1.jpg
09:52 AM Tom_L: brand new plate someone dropped off
09:54 AM travis_farmer[m]: not much for metal salvage in my area. most good metal is already slated for selling to an out of state scrap recycler. there are auto salvage yards, but just newer collision scrap, they part out, and recycle the rest
09:56 AM travis_farmer[m]: most metal i get comes from a welding shop a couple towns over. they sell the cut-offs fairly cheap
09:56 AM Tom_L: my point is, use what you can find cheap
09:56 AM Tom_L: takes a bit longer
09:57 AM JT-Cave: yup
09:57 AM travis_farmer[m]: oh, i do, for most of it. the spindle purchase was sort of a parallel to JT buying a new corvette ;-)
09:58 AM Tom_L: but he has the means to do it
09:58 AM travis_farmer[m]: that was the point of my last big post
09:58 AM Tom_L: (i hope) :)
09:59 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, should i rebuild or wait?
09:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: i have issues with me trying to "keep up with the jones' "
10:01 AM travis_farmer[m]: at the moment, i am stuck with much progress, due to lack of room in the camper, and not wanting to make the machine too much weight that me and my father cannot move it to the new shop.
10:13 AM JT-Cave: I think a rebuild is in order
10:14 AM * JT-Cave fondly remembers his first workshop... a packing crate with one side and the bottom cut out sitting on some bricks to raise it up and a folding chair so I could close the closet door when I was done working
10:59 AM Rowow5457[m]: Hello I'm trying to follow your linuxcnc guide for installing linuxcnc 2.9 on debian 11 and the first line "sudo apt install build-essential devscripts gdebi" comes back with a "package devscripts has no installation candidate". I've did sudo apt update and the other commands from the prior tutorial. Is the package changed or do I have do download and install it manually
11:00 AM Tom_L: Rowow5457[m], try installing them one at a time to see which one fails
11:01 AM roycroft: devscripts - scripts to make the life of a Debian Package maintainer easier
11:01 AM roycroft: it's definitely available for debian 11
11:08 AM JT-Woodshop: might have been a typo or copy and paste error
11:14 AM roycroft: could be
11:14 AM roycroft: i would take tom_l's advice and install the packages individually
11:20 AM JT-Cave: Rowow5457[m], link to the page your looking at?
11:24 AM * Rowow5457[m] uploaded an image: (1888KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/iEJmNvuBJhwoblgGPcEBUxZu/PXL_20230326_155841099.jpg >
11:27 AM rmu: Rowow5457[m]: it looks like you have only debian security apt source enabled
11:29 AM rmu: Rowow5457[m]: look at file /etc/apt/sources.list
11:29 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:30 AM * JT-Shop has the finished compost sifted and bagged... now to haul it up the hill from the compost bins
11:30 AM * JT-Shop waits for a link to the page...
11:31 AM Rowow5457[m]: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/debian-11-emc.html
11:31 AM Rowow5457[m]: Sorry thanks for the reminder
11:32 AM Rowow5457[m]: I copy and pasted to make sure I didn't mistype as I usually do
11:35 AM perry_j1987: there we go
11:35 AM perry_j1987: got the machines moved onto a new workbench i made out of pallet rack 3' tall
11:35 AM perry_j1987: pretty darn solid heh
11:36 AM JT-Shop: what's in /etc/apt/sources.list
11:37 AM Tom_L: #102
11:37 AM JT-Shop: ok
11:38 AM JT-Shop: it's possible that sources.list is missing something
11:41 AM JT-Shop: Rowow5457[m], /etc/apt/sources.list should contain at least the following two lines
11:41 AM JT-Shop: deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main non-free contrib
11:41 AM JT-Shop: deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bullseye main non-free contrib
11:42 AM * JT-Shop goes to carry the last two bags of compost up the hill which seems to get higher with each bag
11:42 AM Rowow5457[m]: It's empty
11:43 AM * Rowow5457[m] uploaded an image: (1136KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/HgBlDmYUlHbtolRfmthNrync/PXL_20230326_164149465.jpg >
11:43 AM rmu: Rowow5457[m]: /etc/apt/sources.list.d is a directory, /etc/apt/sources.list is a text-file
11:44 AM rmu: Rowow5457[m]: you show the contents of the dir /etc/apt/sources.list.d, nothing wrong with it being empty
11:45 AM rmu: Rowow5457[m]: type "cat /etc/apt/sources.list" followed by enter without the quotes in a terminal

11:45 AM Rowow5457[m]: Sorry about that, thanks for the clarification
11:46 AM roycroft: apt update
11:47 AM * Rowow5457[m] uploaded an image: (1488KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/ryWZBuTTvaGwzTIGEplfQhcX/PXL_20230326_164545606.jpg >
11:47 AM roycroft: apt-cache search devscripts
11:47 AM rmu: Rowow5457[m]: add the lines JT-Shop mentions into /etc/apt/sources.list
11:47 AM JT-Shop: yup
11:48 AM JT-Shop: Rowow5457[m], sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
11:49 AM JT-Shop: add the lines I posted above then Ctrl x y enter
11:50 AM Tom_L: more tree trimming done

11:53 AM Rowow5457[m]: Same error
11:53 AM JT-Shop: did you update?
11:53 AM rmu: pcw--home: is it normal on a 7c80 for the LED of the outputs to glow slightly? didn't notice it before and suspect my customized firmware is causing this somehow
11:53 AM Tom_L: sudo apt update
11:54 AM Rowow5457[m]: No doing it now
11:54 AM Tom_L: then sudo apt install build-essential devscripts gdebi
11:54 AM Rowow5457[m]: Works!!!!
11:54 AM Rowow5457[m]: Thank you so much!
11:54 AM * JT-Shop thinks it's time for a nap now
11:54 AM * Tom_L agrees
11:55 AM Rowow5457[m]: Did I mess up in the install or why did it not have it at firsr
11:55 AM Tom_L: you didn't have the non free stuff available
11:55 AM Rowow5457[m]: s/firsr/first/
11:55 AM JT-Shop: IIRC I've seen that happen before but don't remember why
11:56 AM pcw--home: RMU yes, that's a visual (but not functional) flaw in the 7C80 (and 7I96)
11:57 AM Rowow5457[m]: Hopefully it goes fine from here
11:57 AM Rowow5457[m]: Thanks alot for your instructions that you made they are very well written. Alot of documentation is very poorly written and hard to follow so it's nice to see some simple easy to follow guide
11:57 AM rmu: pcw--home: ok thanks. is it caused by some sort of crosstalk?
11:57 AM JT-Shop: I'll add a check for sources.list to the instructions
11:58 AM Tom_L: good to see JT-Cave JT-Shop JT-Woodshop JT[m] all online again
11:58 AM JT-Shop: you got that right
11:59 AM Tom_L: i think i would keep any spares that may arrive
11:59 AM JT-Shop: yup
11:59 AM Rowow5457[m]: Are they all the same person in different areas or different people
11:59 AM JT-Shop: all me
12:00 PM Tom_L: just a split personality
12:00 PM JT-Shop: lol
12:00 PM travis_farmer[m]: lol
12:00 PM Rowow5457[m]: Lol I like it
12:00 PM pcw--home: Its caused by slight (couple of ns) skew in the transformer drive causing a few 10s of uA of current through the LED and into the MOSFET gate resistor
12:01 PM pcw--home: later versions use an additional load resistor so no LED current flows
12:05 PM rmu: modern LEDs... ok i will not worry about that.
12:05 PM pcw--home: You may be able to reduce the glow by lowering the switching frequency
12:06 PM rmu: just wanted to make sure i didn't mess something up. I don't really know what I'm doing in ISE, that process is more like cargo cult engineering.
12:12 PM pcw--home: That's like my C programming, copy stuff that works and change the variable/constants
12:28 PM roycroft: 2022 is closed out! yay!
12:34 PM * Rowow5457[m] uploaded an image: (1814KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/uIGiijrKOhpmKpRSxkxKkhvC/PXL_20230326_173234811.jpg >
12:34 PM Rowow5457[m]: After I installed the linuxcnc dependencies it says to build dependencies and I come to this error
12:45 PM Tom_L: what are you building?
12:45 PM Tom_L: read the readme file for building
12:45 PM Tom_L: i forget where it is... maybe in docs
12:46 PM Tom_L: don't have an linux box on atm
12:46 PM Tom_L: you also are likely in the wrong directory
12:47 PM Tom_L: change to the proper directory and try again
12:47 PM Rowow5457[m]: I'm trying to install Linuxcnc 2.9
12:47 PM Rowow5457[m]: Following this guide https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/debian-11-emc.html
12:48 PM Tom_L: you need to be in the linuxcnc directory
12:48 PM Tom_L: i forget what directory it's in but there is a readme there
12:48 PM Rowow5457[m]: I think I closed out the terminal after installing the dependencies, I'll try again from the beginning
12:49 PM Tom_L: cd linuxcnc
12:49 PM Tom_L: then run debian/configure and see what happens
12:49 PM Tom_L: or debian/configure no-docs
12:49 PM Tom_L: takes alot less time to build without docs
12:50 PM Tom_L: pretty sure you're in the wrong directory
12:52 PM Rowow5457[m]: Works now! It was cd build
12:52 PM Rowow5457[m]: Thanks yiu
12:52 PM Rowow5457[m]: s/yiu/you/
12:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: debian/configure no-docs is working again?
01:02 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], i think so
01:08 PM JT-Shop: it has always worked AFAIK
03:00 PM JT[m]: no-docs is a debian configure option only, it does not work with aRIP
05:26 PM JT-Shop: rmu, I got chuckle on your reply "first you gotta fix your keyboard"
05:41 PM roycroft: is there some big sports thing happening today?
05:41 PM roycroft: i had to run some errands, and the roads are totally deserted
05:42 PM roycroft: the weather is decent - i'd expect folks to be flocking to the home improvement centers and city parks and the like today
05:42 PM rmu: :)
05:45 PM rmu: some people just don't know how to ask questions
05:45 PM JT-Shop: you got that right
05:47 PM JT-Shop: looks like a really nice week... got the finished compost sifted and bagged up PM1500 delivers tomorrow need to transfer 2 year old compost to finish bin and 1 year old to center bin
05:50 PM roycroft: my air assist pump arrived, but the switch is totally smashed
05:51 PM roycroft: it does not work, because the pcb for the controller circuit is broken in half
05:51 PM JT-Shop: that sucks
05:51 PM roycroft: yeah
05:51 PM roycroft: oh well
05:51 PM XXCoder: aw
05:52 PM roycroft: i have some repairs to do to my fabrication shop - it has some window openings that i had covered with 8mil vinyl, and after 15 years or so the vinyl is disintegrating
05:52 PM roycroft: so i guess i'll go work on that now, since the weather is decent and i can't do anything more with the laser for now
05:55 PM roycroft: a replacement pump should be here wednesday, so it's not too much of a setback
06:08 PM JT-Shop: I need to get the winter covers off the coops and put out the hoses
06:16 PM JT-Shop: the worst part about getting a delivery is having to be glued to your phone and I hate that
06:36 PM skunkworks[m]: I am usually really good at google searching.. I get yelled at a lot 'How did you find that - I had been googling for an hour"
06:50 PM JT-Shop: well the coops have been de-winterized and ready for summer
06:52 PM * JT-Shop is ready for a shot of nyquil and the bed
06:53 PM JT-Shop: but it's another 1/2 hour till sundown
06:53 PM skunkworks[m]: side note.. I setup my daughters phone/android tablet to use Microsoft parental control because the google parental control wouldn't work with her android watch... I did it by setting her birthdate to something older than 14... well - a few days ago she saw that her birthdate wasn't right - so she set it to her 10yo date. well - google then goes into parental control mode and says you need to delete your account or have a
06:53 PM skunkworks[m]: parent setup parental control within 14 days... ugh
06:53 PM JT-Shop: crap
06:53 PM Tom_L: heh
06:54 PM * JT-Shop hates google
06:54 PM skunkworks[m]: took a couple days to re-set her birthdate.. you can do it with a credit card (to prove that you are an adult) but it wasn't working on her phone.. finally tried it from a chrome browser and it worked.. whew..
06:57 PM skunkworks[m]: she new I was upset about it. I have pretty good kids. she apologized - I said it was ok - just don't do it again. (it took a bit of work initially to figure out why the watch wasn't working with google parental control - and figuring out a different way.) (like a year ago or so)
06:57 PM skunkworks[m]: knew
07:26 PM roycroft: "daddy, i'm sorry google are such assholes"
07:30 PM skunkworks[m]: exactly
07:30 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:30 PM skunkworks[m]: Having kids lets you know how weird things are..
07:31 PM Tom_L: i'm just glad mine are past that point
07:45 PM skunkworks[m]: lol - it is fun.. the ex doesn't want them on any technology.. But - well - life.
07:46 PM Tom_L: pretty much unavoidable nowdays
07:46 PM bjorkintosh: there is a lot of trash out there, and it's only getting worse.
07:46 PM bjorkintosh: nothing like pihole.
