08:21 AM unterhausen: garage door spring broke, whee!
08:24 AM unterhausen: garage door company wants to come out, measure the spring, order it, and then come back and install it
08:25 AM unterhausen: only reason I called them was because I thought they would have the spring
09:12 AM perry_j1987: morning
09:19 AM spray[m]: Can I have remora related question here?
09:41 AM perry_j1987: sure
09:46 AM spray[m]: i have flashed EC500 with rt1052 firmware using pyOCD and it seemed to finish successfuly
09:46 AM spray[m]: however I have troubles to get ping from the card when I connect it via ethernet cable
09:47 AM spray[m]: to get a ping, is it just plug and play? i set up static ip address 10.10.10.11/255.255.255.0 on my ethernet adapter and connected ec500 controller and powered up
09:47 AM spray[m]: however there is no ping reply
09:48 AM spray[m]: i tried that on linuxcnc machine and I tried windows machine with same network settings
09:53 AM spray[m]: i take that back - i had firewall on, I can ping now
09:53 AM spray[m]: so I can proceed to next steps 🙂
09:54 AM perry_j1987: glad we could help :)
09:55 AM spray[m]: i will be probably back with more questions. I have to setup linuxcnc to work with ec500 now, which I expect to be more difficult
10:28 AM CaptHindsight[m]: spray: you're likely best off posting Remora questions on the forums
10:37 AM roycroft: it is friday
10:43 AM perry_j1987: it snowed here again ugh
10:43 AM perry_j1987: was somewhat scary getting home yesterday
10:43 AM skunkworks[m]: Got about 4 inches of snow..
10:43 AM skunkworks[m]: so - maybe one more day of ski'ing this weekend
10:43 AM skunkworks[m]: it is melting fast
10:44 AM CaptHindsight[m]: already slush down here
10:45 AM roycroft: i5 is closed in southern oregon and northern california north of lake shasta
10:45 AM roycroft: we did not get snow on the valley floor here, though
10:46 AM spray[m]: Thanks. I already posted here
10:46 AM spray[m]: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/44828-remora-ethernet-nvem-cnc-board
10:46 AM CaptHindsight[m]: spray: dats dah place
10:48 AM CaptHindsight[m]: i don't think that scotta is ever on IRC/Matrix/Discord
10:49 AM CaptHindsight[m]: cakeslob was here once
10:50 AM roycroft: i got a nice, cushy anti-fatigue mat yesterday for my stand-up desk - it makes a big difference
11:07 AM CaptHindsight[m]: urethane floor mats vs an inch of urethane shoe sole
11:21 AM roycroft: i don't wear shoes in the office much, as my office is in my house
11:22 AM travis_farmer[m]: don't tell me you strut all day in a T-shirt and underwear?
11:22 AM roycroft: no, that i do not do
11:23 AM roycroft: wearing clothes is a lot cheaper than heating the house
11:23 AM roycroft: so i keep the ambient temperature moderate and dress accordingly
11:24 AM travis_farmer[m]: same here. i figure if i am up and awake, i may as well dress like i am.
11:25 AM roycroft: i'll admit to wearing mismatched sweat pants and a sweatshirt or sweater at times when i'm working alone
11:26 AM roycroft: i do try to dress decently when i'm going out
11:26 AM roycroft: but comfort is more important when in the office
11:26 AM travis_farmer[m]: i got word from YouTube that my channel is now Livestream enabled... not sure if i have the courage to go live... or even if i would have enough to talk about to keep people interested.
11:27 AM roycroft: i've never been interested in making youtube videos
11:27 AM roycroft: there's really no money in it any more
11:27 AM roycroft: and i already do more than enough volunteer work
11:28 AM roycroft: the youtube revenue model for makers these days is to gain exposure on youtube and generate revenue via patreon
11:28 AM travis_farmer[m]: i am not in it for the money, just "something to do", really
11:28 AM roycroft: yeah, i can see that
11:28 AM roycroft: but as i said, i already do way too much volunteer work
11:28 AM roycroft: "something to do" is not a problem for me
11:29 AM travis_farmer[m]: is for me. if i am not working on my machine, i am just watching movies, and scanning the help-wanted postings
11:30 AM jpa-: i have never watched a youtube livestream, seems they would be pretty boring without editing
11:31 AM travis_farmer[m]: i was thinking of adding a podcast to my channel, but not yet sure where i would record the audio, as noise is an issue in my bedroom (servers)
11:36 AM JT[m]: Blue is ordered
11:37 AM Tom_L: yay
11:37 AM Tom_L: building debs too
11:37 AM JT[m]: Thanks
11:37 AM Tom_L: got busy last night and didn't get it done
11:39 AM JT[m]: I didn't do jack this morning lol
11:41 AM roycroft: i like watching matt cremona's livestream on friday afternoons
11:41 AM roycroft: he and his wife have a chat for 45 minutes or so on occasional fridays
11:41 AM roycroft: they are entertaining
11:41 AM Tom_L: well i'm not doing jack the rest of the day
11:42 AM Tom_L: on the other hand you've got circles to glue :)
11:43 AM JT[m]: We're at River Ridge Winery
11:43 AM travis_farmer[m]: i could do a livestream talking about my machine, but i doubt many if any would tune in ;-)
11:44 AM roycroft: you're probably as attractive as matt's wife
11:44 AM roycroft: probably not, rather
11:44 AM roycroft: possibly not even as attractive as matt's dog :P
11:45 AM Tom_L: ahh
11:54 AM Tom_L: JT[m], PR #100 up
11:58 AM JT[m]: Ok
12:06 PM JT[m]: Gotta cut the circles first
12:07 PM JT[m]: Hopefully the circle jig makes short work of cutting circle halves
12:16 PM Loetmichel: Oh MAAAN... People these days. Had a CAD training a few villages over. Right next to a Power plant. One of the other trainees: "I am not feeling good so close to a nuclear power plant!" $me: "WTF? Its a coal plant. Why do you think thats a nuclear power plant? Ever seen one that has a bunch of chimneys that put out soot?" $him:"But it has cooling towers!!!" **facepalm**
12:22 PM roycroft: i'd be more concerned hanging out next to a coal fired power plant than a nuclear power plant
12:26 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: me too. Problem is that quite a few germans hear "nuclear" and think its a demonic infestation, apart from the fact that a fossil fuel plant obviously doesent need any cooling in their mind. :(
12:32 PM roycroft: nuclear power can be very clean and safe
12:33 PM roycroft: the objection i have to it is that we don't manage nuclear waste well
12:33 PM roycroft: there can be very little nuclear waste - most "spent" fuel rods can be reprocessed and reused
12:33 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: its a coal plant for Fu*** sake
12:34 PM roycroft: but we tend to just haul the waste away and think we can store it safely for hundreds of generations until it's no longer toxic
12:34 PM Loetmichel: that guy just saw the iconic white billowing steam coooling towers and imediatly jumped to conclusions
12:34 PM roycroft: but we can fix that
12:34 PM roycroft: it's harder to burn coal without spewing soot and mercury and other nasty, toxic substances into the atmosphere
12:36 PM skunkworks[m]: travis_farmer what is your channel?
12:36 PM Deknos: there's not just the waste issue. i am not aware of any nuclear powerplant system, where some powermaniac manager cannot override safety controls for "moar efficiency" which could lead to a meltdown/supergau. solving the waste issue and the safety control, then we'd have safe nuclear power...
12:37 PM travis_farmer[m]: https://www.youtube.com/@travisfarmer216
12:38 PM Deknos: all the catastrophies were mostly bad management before the build or during operation. we need a technical system were management cannot create safety issues.
12:41 PM Deknos: of course, that would mean less energy output probably, and companies do not like that.
12:45 PM skunkworks[m]: travis_farmer subscribed
12:46 PM travis_farmer[m]: :-)
12:47 PM roycroft: any system can be mismanaged
12:48 PM roycroft: and technology cannot solve all social issues
12:48 PM roycroft: nor should it need to
12:53 PM menace: then if the technology cannot be managed we should not use it. we also not allow anyone build an atomic bomb just for shit and fun
12:53 PM menace: and i am not convinced that we cannot built a safe nuclear powerplant which is safe from missmanagement
12:54 PM menace: of course, gross mismanagement you never can stop, but it can be built with enough safety measures and margins. and the type of technology is also important here. IMHO it can be done.
12:54 PM menace: it's just not very profitable to companies to research and build new types of nuclear plants ANYWHERE. they just wanna milk the sweet money
12:59 PM roycroft: the private sector should perhaps not be involved in providing that kind of utility
12:59 PM roycroft: where i live we have a public power and water utility
01:00 PM roycroft: who are answerable to the local community, not to shareholders living elsewhere
01:00 PM menace: well, society hates a strong government even more than nuclear power :D
01:00 PM menace: also, you need more accountability within the government before i trust them again
01:01 PM roycroft: "society" is not monolithic
01:01 PM roycroft: i have a mistrust of government, but i have a much greater mistrust of corporations
01:02 PM menace: i agree here.
01:03 PM menace: yeah, society is not monolithic, but the number of times people throw shit at public workers vs. corporations is.. noticeable
01:03 PM menace: nobody gives a shit about nestle or pharma companies doing really evil things. but oh woes if the local government does not things with no money in an excellent way
01:03 PM Loetmichel: [20:00] <roycroft> i have a mistrust of government, but i have a much greater mistrust of corporations <- I second that. Wholeheartedly
01:06 PM menace: well, your opinion is not very "big" noticeable in the general population
01:06 PM menace: sorry to say
01:06 PM menace: i also would like if this changes
01:06 PM roycroft: mayhap you see the world through blinders
01:07 PM roycroft: most of the folks in whose social circles i travel have a greater mistrust of corporations than of government, but are skeptical about both
01:08 PM menace: is that so. then tell me, when a government stopped a multinational company doing evil things? when was the last time, private companies sold public utilities back to government with a PROFIT for the company and the government just not took the public utility back after the private company milked the utility almost to death?
01:08 PM roycroft: i would not say my circle is a good representative cross-section of american society as a whole
01:08 PM menace: s/when a government stopped/when did a government stop/;
01:08 PM roycroft: wait
01:09 PM menace: well, apparently your social circles do not reflect their vote very much in that belief.. or your social circle is not representative for the society at a whole.
01:09 PM roycroft: you're arguing that government are more evil than private corporations because when private corporations do evil things government do not do enough to stop them
01:09 PM menace: no.
01:09 PM roycroft: i live in oregon
01:09 PM roycroft: my social circle's vote is representative of my state as a whole
01:09 PM menace: i argue that society does not give a shit about evil cooperations, but over-emphasizes on the supposed "evilness" of government
01:10 PM roycroft: sure
01:10 PM roycroft: magaland do
01:10 PM roycroft: they're a minority
01:10 PM roycroft: a small minority
01:10 PM roycroft: but intelligent, thoughtful people don't think that
01:11 PM menace: magaland does not seem very small when you look at the votes the last years.
01:11 PM menace: lol
01:11 PM roycroft: anyway, not only is this conversation off-topic, it's offensive to many here
01:11 PM roycroft: so we should move on to something else
01:11 PM menace: also, nice trick excluding everyone who does not agree with "but intelligent, thoughtful people don't think that". because then you have the half of the country, but sadly in a democracy you cannot rule without the dumbdumbs
01:12 PM menace: yeah
01:12 PM menace: i agree
01:12 PM travis_farmer[m]: politics and religion are both topics best not talked about ;-)
01:12 PM roycroft: it's fine to talk about both
01:12 PM roycroft: but not where that kind of talk is not wanted
01:13 PM roycroft: this all goes back to my premise that it's unwise to try to solve social problems with technology
01:13 PM roycroft: which i think was not terribly far off-topic
01:13 PM roycroft: but it digressed from there
01:14 PM menace: we solve some social problems with technology all the time. but not everything can be solved all the time. still. at the end i believe, safe nuclear power is possible. but will be probably never be built.
01:14 PM roycroft: the irony of loetmichel's co-worker's concern is that he was right to be concerned, but he was concerned for the wrong reason
01:15 PM menace: hrhr
01:17 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: luckily not a co-worker, just a fellow trainee from a different company. But yeah, coal plants tend to spew out some raidoactivity in the soot/ash
01:18 PM XXCoder: as well as other fun stuff like mecury, etc

03:08 PM roycroft: so my boss ported all our sip trunks to a new provider to save 37cents or so
03:08 PM roycroft: i asked him if he needed provisioning help, and he said he did not, as it is all working
03:08 PM roycroft: he kept getting "phantom" charges to the old sip provider account, and turned that account off
03:08 PM roycroft: then all outbound calls stopped working
03:09 PM roycroft: he had set up routing for inbound with the new provider just fine, but never changed the outbound routes
03:09 PM roycroft: and now it's all my fault ;)
03:11 PM Tom_L: of course it is. you didn't push the issue of him doing it
03:22 PM roycroft: while he was complaining and telling me i need to fix it i logged into the old provider, paid them the $4.65 that they wanted to reinstate the account, and restored outbound routing through them
03:23 PM roycroft: now i can start working on the outbound routing issue with the new provider
03:23 PM XXCoder: people who grab successes and roll off fails suck
04:38 PM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (150KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/VRfaEamuZkcZJMhWCfCzAETP/332879814_171684218961630_5605891895522675680_n.jpg >
04:38 PM travis_farmer[m]: this happened across my FaceBook...
04:38 PM XXCoder: its interesting how massive computers are
04:38 PM travis_farmer[m]: just thought it was neat
04:39 PM travis_farmer[m]: yes, and compaired to now...
04:39 PM travis_farmer[m]: s/compaired/compared/
04:39 PM XXCoder: yeah. and theres bit earlier one, it was quite large machine
04:39 PM XXCoder: lemme find it a sec
04:42 PM travis_farmer[m]: i gotta run to the store, but i will see it when i check in tomorrow morning :-)
06:43 PM unterhaus_: it's funny hurco got that conversational programming patent when there are pictures from mit of peopld doing the same thing from the white coat days
06:43 PM unterhaus_: I guess if it's done at MIT it's like it never happened
06:44 PM unterhaus_: The difference between MIT and other universities is the amazing number of press releases MIT puts out about even the most mundane thing
06:58 PM roycroft: we do need to reform our patent system
06:58 PM roycroft: but that's another conversation that could easily get off-track
07:35 PM XXCoder: travis_farmer[m]: yah cant find the picture at all
07:54 PM roycroft: how is it that i have a font collection numbering well into the thousands, but still cannot find the font that i want?
07:55 PM XXCoder: that question is the answer
08:19 PM roycroft: the question doesn't matter
08:20 PM roycroft: the answer's always 'aye'
08:20 PM roycroft: the best air of all is where the land meets the sky
08:20 PM XXCoder: lol
08:24 PM perry_j1987: just got back from doing the miller brewery tour in milwaukee
08:25 PM roycroft: well
08:25 PM roycroft: i tried to find a youtube video of that song to point you to
08:26 PM roycroft: but the proclaimers are very scottish
08:26 PM roycroft: and youtube doesn't do scottish closed captions/subtitles well
08:26 PM roycroft: i could not find a version that works
08:26 PM XXCoder: its fine. thanks for trying :
08:26 PM XXCoder: :D
08:27 PM roycroft: i turn on subtitles, and most of the videos do nothing
08:27 PM roycroft: the ones that try just say [music]
08:27 PM roycroft: i guess that's a good thing
08:27 PM roycroft: at least the recognize the proclaimers as music :)
08:27 PM XXCoder: lol
08:28 PM roycroft: but the song is 'the joyful kilmarnock blues'
08:28 PM roycroft: *chuckle*
08:29 PM roycroft: i just found another video of the song where the subtitles don't say [music]
08:29 PM roycroft: they say "foreign"
08:29 PM XXCoder: foreign comes up very often even on properly autocaptioned videos
08:29 PM XXCoder: seems that theres one or more noises that sounds like foreign in different language
08:31 PM roycroft: i saw the proclaimers at a pub in portland about 20 years ago
08:31 PM roycroft: it was a really fun show
08:31 PM XXCoder: one of very few shows I went to was chriss angel
08:32 PM roycroft: and that was one of their few international tours, other than going to canada and germany, where they are very popular
08:32 PM XXCoder: me and my bro paid far off seat price for second row since cashier realized that we would miss half of stuff
08:32 PM XXCoder: man it was hella fun even without music or spoken stuff.
08:33 PM roycroft: nice
08:33 PM roycroft: it's hard to imagine going to a concert and not being able to hear the music
08:33 PM XXCoder: it was in 2008. already years ago. its not really concert but tricks show
08:33 PM roycroft: but i can see how a good performer would still put on a show that you could enjoy without hearing
08:34 PM XXCoder: I still dont know how he did some stuff. seems impossible
08:34 PM XXCoder: its like real magic
08:35 PM roycroft: anyway, i'm sorry i couldn't find a proclaimers video of that song that you would be able to enjoy, but while looking i found a video of a complete show they did at stirling castle for hogmanay in 2012 that is a great show
08:35 PM roycroft: so i'm sucking that down now to put in my video library :)
08:35 PM XXCoder: :)
08:35 PM XXCoder: happy discoveries
08:36 PM roycroft: they're doing a cover of the joan jet classic "i love rock and roll" right now
08:36 PM roycroft: in heavy brogue, of course
08:36 PM XXCoder: deep voice right?
08:39 PM roycroft: no, not really
08:39 PM roycroft: their cover of "king of the road" is one of the best
08:40 PM roycroft: scots have a really bizarre fetish about country-western music
08:40 PM XXCoder: always interesting to see that. like kfc xmas in japan
08:40 PM roycroft: anyway, i wish the captions came through
08:40 PM roycroft: joyful kilmarnock blues is a great song
08:44 PM roycroft: i picked up my t-shirts today
08:44 PM roycroft: they turned out awesome
08:44 PM roycroft: much better than i expected
08:46 PM XXCoder: nice
08:46 PM XXCoder: once bought small batch of shirts, it get fizzy when you look at it wrong lol
08:49 PM roycroft: my logo is really nice - i'm very happy with it, but the moon graphic has some really thin lines, and the font that we're using is also pretty thin
08:49 PM roycroft: i was concerned about how that would translate to various media, but the business cards i made look great, and the t-shirts look amazing
08:49 PM roycroft: i can't wait to get the laser engraver to see how that works out
08:49 PM XXCoder: thats good. would have needed redesign oherwise
08:49 PM roycroft: well, we would have had to adjust it
08:50 PM roycroft: same font, but thicker, perhaps
08:51 PM roycroft: the folks who made the t-shirts for me are a former board director of the country fair and her partnet
08:51 PM roycroft: partner
08:51 PM roycroft: i think the made a special effort to make them look really good
08:51 PM XXCoder: nice
08:51 PM roycroft: yeah
08:52 PM roycroft: the shirts are black, because that is what i could get right now, but the logo itself is actually a really dark, grey blue
08:52 PM roycroft: like midnight blue
08:52 PM roycroft: so we're going to keep looking for shirts that are the right color
08:52 PM roycroft: in the meantime, i have a batch of shirts that i can wear to events, and also use for work shirts
08:52 PM roycroft: when we get the blue ones, the black ones will be strictly work shirts
08:53 PM roycroft: anyway, it looks like time to make pizza
10:33 PM travis_farmer[m]: Hmm, couldn't sleep... i would say "G'Morning", but the time is only 23:31 here.
