12:01 AM roycroft: the lower power one is supposedly higher resolution as well, which would be a bonus
12:11 AM * roycroft wishes the internet would just be honest about things
01:43 AM Loetmichel: Hmm, anybody thing i'll learn eventually? Just filled 53.4 liters of petrol into the 50 liters tank of my A-class. one of these days i will be on the side of the road again using the jerry can in the trunk. :D
02:48 AM Deejay: moin
04:13 AM Lcvette[m]: travis_farmer: not sure how you intended to use the stepper motor on the platter, but it would be smart to use a geneva wheel setup and control it with simple IO pins and index and home sensor. just a thought.
04:13 AM travis_farmer[m]: Lcvette: Honestly thinking of scrapping everything. my ideas are terrible, and everyone elses are either too expensive, or outside my brain power level to construct.
04:13 AM mol[m] is now known as mol4805[m]
04:39 AM Tom_L: morning
04:44 AM rmu: travis_farmer[m]: why don't you go for a simple rack tool changer, no moving parts, easily repaired if something goes wrong
04:45 AM rmu: travis_farmer[m]: the question is, do you need a tool as a means for an end, or do you want to build a machine.
04:46 AM rmu: (means to an end?)

07:26 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I "think" I'm done building the ini file sections except for any boards with spindle interface... just finished the smart serial
07:27 AM JT-Cave: looks like fedsex lost my modem...
07:28 AM * JT-Cave is off to start his chicken day
08:13 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:20 AM perry_j1987: i figured out what must have fried the controller lol
08:45 AM unterhausen: what happened
09:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: because it would be in the way
09:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: ???
09:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, what do you mean by that?
09:04 AM * travis_farmer[m] was exceedingly depressed this morning, for a completely unknown reason...
09:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: signing off, i guess...
09:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: ...guess i will never know...
09:06 AM unterhausen[m]: am I on the new discord or the old discord?
09:07 AM roycroft: is there a difference?
09:07 AM travis_farmer[m]: new
09:07 AM unterhausen[m]: oh good, I deleted the old then
09:07 AM unterhausen[m]: the old may fail to work
09:08 AM unterhausen[m]: admin ran away, won't communicate, started using grbl
09:14 AM travis_farmer[m]: hmmm, 22 views on my YouTube video, and according to YouTube, nobody watched past a minute or two... clearly i am doing something wrong with my videos...
09:14 AM unterhausen[m]: that's because you need to clean the lens on the potato you use to film them
09:15 AM unterhausen[m]: link to your channel?
09:17 AM travis_farmer[m]: i did clean my lens....
09:17 AM unterhausen[m]: I gave you a thumbs up, do I have to watch the whole video now?
09:17 AM travis_farmer[m]: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2li_koW8Lf08WZYgt4s4Bw
09:18 AM unterhausen: did you ever dress those wires?
09:19 AM unterhausen: since you only posted it yesterday, I guess not
09:21 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:22 AM JT-Shop: photos are not making it here
09:23 AM unterhausen: Travis, all I can say is that video does drag on a bit, I got the idea
09:24 AM unterhausen: if you were making chips, I might have finished watching.
09:25 AM travis_farmer[m]: they have shrink-wrap, but i haven't bound them together yet
09:25 AM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (322KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/KOiurAxOORuQKykCmpLOqTtp/20230307_091912.jpg >
09:25 AM unterhausen[m]: JT, your messages are showing up on discord, but not on irc
09:25 AM travis_farmer[m]: ok, thatks for that input :-) quite helpful
09:25 AM JT[m]: Test
09:25 AM JT[m]: Test
09:25 AM unterhausen[m]: not sure how that works, maybe they don't like such short nics?
09:25 AM JT-Shop: hmm my post showed up here...
09:25 AM JT-Shop: been using that nick for a long time
09:26 AM unterhausen: now it showed up
09:26 AM * JT-Shop feels defeated now... the two sides don't match and we are leaving for the wedding on the 15th
09:27 AM JT-Shop: I don't think I have time to start over again...
09:27 AM * JT-Shop thinks about it while waiting for the bleeding to stop
09:27 AM unterhausen: nobody watches my vids, even me
09:28 AM unterhausen: my voice has changed since I made my last vid, steroid inhalers I guess
09:29 AM roycroft: i don't make videos, so i'm certain nobody watches mine
09:29 AM unterhausen: I would listen to forest gump
09:30 AM unterhausen: I think Tom hanks would be disappointed you didn't think he sounded back woodsy though
09:30 AM rmu: travis_farmer[m]: I watched your video
09:31 AM jpa-: youtube view counts don't really update in realtime
09:31 AM unterhausen: I sound like a frog with its nethers in a vise
09:31 AM unterhausen: if you entitled your video "cnc crash" everyone would watch to the end
09:32 AM rmu: better even "horrible cnc crash"
09:36 AM unterhausen: have to be careful, is watching to the end a more desirable metric than a downvote
09:37 AM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (20KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/butGoZdEUmKsoHLgUwpsEjSG/Screenshot%202023-03-07%20at%2010-32-36%20Video%20analytics%20-%20YouTube%20Studio.png >
09:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: lol, maybe i will try again on my next video
09:37 AM unterhausen[m]: you could put a caption that says, "wait for it!"
09:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: :-) Thanks, rmu :-)
09:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: i don't do click-bait, as it is rude
09:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: i watch the "Realtime analytics" view count... i think it is fairly realtime...
09:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: up to 25 now :-)
09:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: hmm, true point
09:38 AM unterhausen[m]: and then when people say nothing happened, you could tell them they were supposed to wait for the end of the video
09:38 AM travis_farmer[m]: only thing as the end is my outro thing...
09:38 AM unterhausen[m]: I've been missing the outro all along
09:39 AM travis_farmer[m]: lol
09:39 AM unterhausen[m]: at least you don't have a long boring intro, I dislike that with a passion
09:39 AM unterhausen[m]: but myspace tom must be proud that all his effects didn't die after all
09:40 AM unterhausen[m]: If Tom Hanks got into cnc, he would buy a machining center and skip all the fun lcnc stuff
09:40 AM unterhausen[m]: probably hire a machinist
09:41 AM roycroft: if tom hanks got into cnc, linuxcnc would magically just work for him
09:41 AM travis_farmer[m]: lol
09:41 AM unterhausen[m]: you never see celebrity machine shops though
09:44 AM travis_farmer[m]: true
09:44 AM unterhausen[m]: is that a forest gump reference?
09:44 AM * travis_farmer[m] wonders if his old camera audio rig still works...
09:45 AM unterhausen[m]: I don't think Jesse James having a beat up old bridgeport rises to the level of "celebrity machine shop"
09:46 AM unterhausen[m]: I never questioned if I was related to the criminal until I saw his show
09:49 AM unterhausen[m]: It's going to be funny when the illegitimate children of my uncle start showing up. His daughter didn't have any kids, so that's the end of this branch of the James family
10:45 AM travis_farmer: did the irc<=>matrix bridge go down?
10:46 AM travis_farmer: but the Matrix to IRC part has gone down. IRC to Matrix works...
10:57 AM travis_farmer[m]: well, seems my old camera audio rig works, so i should be able to record a voice-over on my next CNC video. maybe it will be more entertaining, if i don't stumble over my words too much... :-)
10:57 AM travis_farmer[m]: nope
10:57 AM daight420[m]: anyone have any clue on eeprom errors?
11:22 AM skunkworks[m]: didiergm did you already --write the file?
11:23 AM daight420[m]: no
11:29 AM daight420[m]: are you talking to me?
11:30 AM daight420[m]: either way u just helped me lol
11:30 AM daight420[m]: i thought did not know that you need to write first...
11:30 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:48 AM skunkworks[m]: Yes.. LOL - great!
11:49 AM skunkworks[m]: sorry - tabbed the wrong name.

01:37 PM JT-Shop: damn I gave the starlink kit to the fedex guy yesterday but it's not showing up on tracking...
01:39 PM JT-Shop: fedex lost the replacement modem...
01:40 PM XXCoder: damn that sucks
01:40 PM JT-Shop: that ain't the worst of it, I fucked up the dizzy bowl for my nephew's wedding and don't have time to start over
01:41 PM XXCoder: ohno :( cant seperate layers?
01:41 PM * roycroft hands jt-shop the big jug of epoxy
01:43 PM JT-Shop: never will get the two sides to match if you cut them
01:43 PM JT-Shop: https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/KOiurAxOORuQKykCmpLOqTtp/20230307_091912.jpg
01:44 PM XXCoder: looks like different thicknesses?
01:44 PM XXCoder: specific wood wrong thickness?
01:45 PM travis_farmer: matrix still not coming to IRC?? JT, can't you give them the bowl you already made?
01:45 PM JT-Shop: yup thick on one side thin on the other
01:46 PM JT-Shop: it has defects in it... it was a learning project
01:46 PM travis_farmer: oh
01:46 PM * Tom_L thought JT-Shop just bought a new wood planer
01:46 PM JT-Shop: I need to 3" long 60mm tubings and I have 3 1/2"...
01:46 PM JT-Shop: a planer won't fix that mistake
01:46 PM JT-Shop: it's firewood now
01:46 PM roycroft: you can fix that, jt-shop
01:47 PM XXCoder: hmm use bandsaw with fence to cut off just right at each of wrong thickness wood, smooth it and glue again? dunno how well that'd work
01:48 PM roycroft: it's the 9th strip from the right that is two different widths
01:48 PM roycroft: rip that strip out on the tablesaw, glue in a replacement, and bob's your uncle
01:48 PM travis_farmer: firewood? :-(
01:48 PM XXCoder: roy all 3 of same wood type is wrong thickness, you can see alignment get worse each time that wood comes in
01:48 PM roycroft: i think it's only that one
01:49 PM XXCoder: looking again, actually only 2
01:49 PM roycroft: if you shift the bottom over to the right i think they'll all line up until that strip
01:49 PM JT-Shop: two of the brown ones on the bottom is wider
01:49 PM roycroft: oh, maybe the one towards the middle is also different
01:50 PM roycroft: yeah
01:50 PM JT-Shop: yup I think so
01:50 PM roycroft: but you can still fix that
01:50 PM roycroft: you don't even need to add new strips
01:50 PM roycroft: just rip the bottom one so that the mis-matched strips are the same width as the top and glue it back together
01:50 PM travis_farmer: maye you can cut out the cheaper woods, and save the more expensive ones
01:51 PM * roycroft would try to salvage it just out of stubbornness
01:51 PM XXCoder: isnt that what i said earlier? using bandsaw
01:51 PM JT-Shop: hmm, I wonder what the saw kerf is on my bandsaw
01:51 PM travis_farmer: maybe, i was screwed up by the bridge only working one way
01:51 PM XXCoder: travis_farmer: we can see what youre saying
01:52 PM XXCoder: i see it on both ends
01:52 PM travis_farmer: other way, XX
01:52 PM JT-Shop: I suppose I can't hurt it any more than it is now
01:52 PM XXCoder: yeah try recover as best as can
01:53 PM travis_farmer: see, when i type on Matrix, it doesn't show up. i am on IRC right now
01:53 PM XXCoder: ah yeah I let turboss know
01:53 PM travis_farmer: just trying to help :-)
01:54 PM travis_farmer[m]: JT-Shop: perhaps your saving grace, is you have one all made
01:54 PM TurBoss: 😲
01:54 PM travis_farmer[m]: you can't give them the one you already made?
01:54 PM travis_farmer[m]: when i type here...
01:55 PM travis_farmer: now they show up, lol
01:55 PM XXCoder: yeah hi turboss thanks lol
02:00 PM * travis_farmer is glad his bit of morning depression didn't fully show up in the logs...
02:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:08 PM * travis_farmer[m] is glad his bit of morning depression didn't fully show up in the logs...
02:08 PM travis_farmer[m]: odd
02:16 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/UBivwxBgdPQ
02:17 PM XXCoder: fun engineering video
02:21 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (287KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/mlklmxTpTRgrURbVyfbjrUUT/20230307_142002.jpg >
02:22 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:22 PM JT-Shop: did the photo show up?
02:22 PM XXCoder: yeah
02:22 PM JT-Shop: on the irc?
02:22 PM XXCoder: yep
02:23 PM travis_farmer: a little slow, but yes
02:23 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, are you thinking remove the thick brown pieces then replace with the correct size?
02:23 PM XXCoder: the excess looks bit thick enough to be cut and still have small amount of excess on both sides I think
02:23 PM XXCoder: then disk sand to size
02:24 PM XXCoder: but then im no wood worker
02:24 PM JT-Shop: saw blade is 1/8" thick...
02:24 PM roycroft: yes, jt-shop
02:24 PM roycroft: or just rip the wide ones on the bottom down to the width of the ones on the top
02:25 PM roycroft: they look at least 1/8" wider
02:26 PM roycroft: what i would try doing is ripping one of the wide ones to the correct width
02:26 PM roycroft: and then take the other side and joint it down to the glue line
02:26 PM roycroft: glue it back up, and do the same with the other one
02:26 PM roycroft: or maybe rip the wide strip right down the middle
02:27 PM roycroft: stick it back together, and then plane the cut part until the width is perfect, then glue it up
02:27 PM roycroft: that way you don't risk removing any wood from the adjacent pieces
02:27 PM XXCoder: thats true
02:27 PM roycroft: you'll just have an extra glue line in the brown board
02:27 PM roycroft: and you can use brown-tinted glue and make that glue line invisible
02:28 PM roycroft: as with machining, one of the most fun and challenging parts of woodworking is figuring out how to salvage a mistake
02:28 PM roycroft: i would certainly give that a go before turning it into firewood
02:33 PM JT-Shop: thanks
02:39 PM roycroft: this is the part of woodworking where thousandths matter
02:39 PM roycroft: but a well-tuned handplane can take passes of a thousandth or two
02:39 PM roycroft: so it's very doable
02:40 PM roycroft: i would probably clean up the glue lines and do a quick sand or thicknessing of both pieces before starting, so it's easy to see when the widths line up
02:41 PM satiowadahc[m]: Struggling with terminology on this one, I have a ethercat motor that only takes in a final position input. Instead of issue an M67 is there a way I can connect it to a joint pin and have the joint only output the final position?
02:41 PM satiowadahc[m]: Is this technically an indexed axis?
03:20 PM satiowadahc[m]: https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/forum.linuxcnc.org.html
03:21 PM satiowadahc[m]: Should this go to the email list?
03:22 PM satiowadahc[m]: Or just a hiccup its back now
03:49 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, on 'Settings' the in/min on the Jog slider do not update live like 'Machine Settings' does
03:50 PM Tom_L: and the one on default Angular Velocity doesn't update at all
03:53 PM Tom_L: if you re'open the file they are updated
03:59 PM Tom_L: smart serial looks good
04:00 PM Tom_L: on 7i87, space the box a little wider for the header
04:04 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:08 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, there's a lot of undone stuff... not having all of me online maybe use the issue tracker?
04:09 PM * JT-Shop goes for broke and cuts the piece up
04:10 PM Tom_L: you figure out how to fix the pattern?
04:19 PM roycroft: i bet he'll be able to fix it
04:27 PM perry_j1987: FNO408-45. Do you guys know this material? .4% nickel .08% graphite it says
04:34 PM Tom_L: nope
04:34 PM perry_j1987: can file it
04:34 PM perry_j1987: its hardenable and thats about all i know about it
04:34 PM perry_j1987: trying to figure out speeds and feeds for an unknown metal lol
04:35 PM JT-Shop: first of 3 replaced...
04:38 PM CloudEvil: https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/77/86/8f/c5b4fc62703d5c/US4653354.pdf perry_j1987

05:23 PM JT-Shop: first attempt FAIL
05:32 PM XXCoder: what happened?
05:32 PM JT-Shop: didn't line up correctly
05:32 PM roycroft: is it close?
05:33 PM JT-Shop: not close enough
05:33 PM roycroft: you can hand plane whatever side is still too wide
05:33 PM JT-Shop: all glued up at this point
05:33 PM JT-Shop: going to cut it out again...
05:34 PM roycroft: oh
05:34 PM roycroft: i just had a success
05:34 PM JT-Shop: tomorrow...
05:34 PM roycroft: today was the day i've been looking forward to for a long time - ridding myself of centurylink
05:34 PM JT-Shop: great someone has a good plan
05:34 PM roycroft: my last phone line with them ported over today
05:35 PM roycroft: i called them to cancel my service with them
05:35 PM roycroft: and they started with the usual "what can we do to keep you with us?" spiel
05:35 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: i ask for free service for 10 years and one million $$$$
05:35 PM roycroft: i interrupted and said "i have already ported my last number away from you - the foc due date was today, and the order is complete"
05:36 PM roycroft: and the spiel was instantly over
05:36 PM roycroft: the knew the game was finished and they lost
05:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they never even counter my proposal
05:36 PM roycroft: i'm looking at my $72.34 phone bill for next month that just got cancelled
05:37 PM roycroft: and i'm looking at $5 to port the number, $1.49/month for the trunk, $1.49/month for e911, $1.49/month for inbound cid name, and $0.005/minute for usage anywhere in north america from my new provider
05:38 PM XXCoder: good plan if barely use phone at all
05:39 PM roycroft: so i've reduced my phone bill by about 92%, given how little i use that number
05:39 PM roycroft: it takes a *lot* of talking at 30 cents/hour to add up to that $72.34
05:40 PM roycroft: 224+ hours/month
05:40 PM roycroft: which is almost 8 hours/day
05:40 PM XXCoder: crazy
05:40 PM roycroft: if i use that line 3 hours/month it's a busy phone month for me
05:41 PM roycroft: anyway
05:41 PM roycroft: jt: if you're still around
05:41 PM roycroft: what i would recommend doing at this point is ripping both of those brown strips down the middle
05:41 PM roycroft: oh, he's not around
05:44 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:44 PM roycroft: and he's back
05:51 PM XXCoder: my plan is $35 a month usually
05:51 PM XXCoder: if I use over 6 gb data, then its $95 that month
05:51 PM XXCoder: but I very rarely goes over .1 gb so yeah
05:55 PM roycroft: i just had a big win with my data plan for my ipad as well
05:55 PM roycroft: after at&t lied to me
05:55 PM roycroft: i went to an at&t store and got it all sorted, and got a new plan for less money than i've been paying
08:43 PM roycroft: i finally decided on a laser engraver and ordered it, which is good, because shipment is a month out
08:44 PM CloudEvil: Good luck. May it be in the intended number of parts.
08:46 PM XXCoder: and functionality
08:53 PM roycroft: it should be ok
08:54 PM roycroft: it's one of the little ones - tripod mount - with a stationary head and a spinning mirror
08:54 PM roycroft: it will work or it won't
08:54 PM roycroft: and if it doesn't it goes right back
08:55 PM roycroft: i got it because it's cheap, folks say it does a nice job on wood, and i like the tripod mount - i can pretty much engrave anything with it without having to worry about fitting in the footprint
08:56 PM roycroft: the drawbacks are that it will be slow, which isn't a big deal to me right now, and the maximum size it can engrave is 100mm x 100mm, which i think will work for me for now
08:56 PM roycroft: i just want to engrave my logo on my products
08:57 PM roycroft: it only cost a few dollars more than an electric branding iron
09:56 PM roycroft: i already have some good laser goggles for that frequency
09:57 PM roycroft: i paid more for the goggles than i paid for my first laser
09:57 PM XXCoder: thats good
09:58 PM roycroft: i have no intention of putting my eye out
09:58 PM XXCoder: unlike that kid
09:58 PM roycroft: i've avoided doing so all these years, and i aim to continue such avoidance
09:58 PM XXCoder: quite important to me too
10:17 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Glad to hear it!
11:09 PM roycroft: so we've had a couple days of somewhat seasonal weather
11:09 PM roycroft: but now it's going to snow again
11:10 PM XXCoder: here its rain or soon rain
11:12 PM roycroft: it's been raining almost constantly here
11:12 PM XXCoder: soon here will enter into rain or different kind of rain here
11:12 PM roycroft: i'm looking forward to sunshine and warm days
11:13 PM XXCoder: meh, because after that is smokey hellscope
11:13 PM roycroft: i just ordered that laser engraver
11:14 PM roycroft: i'll be making my own smokey hellscape soon
11:14 PM XXCoder: lol
11:17 PM roycroft: now clickspring video
11:17 PM roycroft: pyrometer
11:17 PM XXCoder: yep
11:18 PM roycroft: chris has stopped sending emails to his patrons when a new video comes out
11:18 PM XXCoder: if i ever do casting, it would be with that small device to melt metals.
11:18 PM roycroft: i haven't gotten one from him in a long time
11:18 PM XXCoder: he only does on main line videos
11:18 PM XXCoder: clips he doesnt
11:18 PM roycroft: this one is longer than a clip
11:18 PM roycroft: but shorter than a full video
11:20 PM XXCoder: not sure then
