03:21 PM JT-Shop: made an adapter for my 3m stickit sanding disk and it held together long enough to finish the job but there's no edge left for 1/2" I guess sitting 20 years in a tool box is too long
03:23 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, any word on the sat?
03:23 PM Tom_L: are those the velcro ones or glue on?
03:24 PM JT-Shop: I got a message yesterday, I see you have two open tickets so I'll close the first one
03:24 PM JT-Shop: PSA disks
03:25 PM Tom_L: we've got a couple boxes full of 3m pads
03:25 PM Tom_L: my friend made the press to cut them and he had to test it
03:25 PM Tom_L: that was a long time ago
03:29 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (291KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/avllyKmwetlzpJLwaeZnlnxK/20230222_152800_7198993818098526059.jpg >
03:29 PM Tom_L: yeah
03:30 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:30 PM Tom_L: time for a new pad i'd say
03:34 PM JT-Shop: I was looking for a smaller right angle sander but found nothing local
03:35 PM Tom_L: i've got a couple of those dynabrade orbital sanders
03:36 PM Tom_L: 6 & 8"
03:47 PM JT-Shop: I was hoping to find an electric one, I only have a small compressor in the big shop
03:48 PM Tom_L: ahh
03:48 PM XXCoder: time for a compressor upgrade ;)
03:48 PM Tom_L: or more plumbing
03:48 PM XXCoder: air pressure runout can be nasty if you use it for part holding and such lol
03:48 PM JT-Shop: the ideal solution is to pipe air from here to there
03:49 PM Tom_L: maybe a reserve tank on the far end
03:49 PM XXCoder: happened to me, though on minor machine. other guy had part fly off mill and thankfully he had plastic curtain so it slowed down a lot
03:50 PM XXCoder: its very simple invention really. its just square of pvc pipes with plastic sheet
03:50 PM XXCoder: on metal legs and wheels
03:51 PM XXCoder: you position it so if part flies off it gets stopped or slowed down
03:51 PM XXCoder: also stops chips
03:51 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (260KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/vwBkswfNNPrYWlzzUTPKIGGk/20230222_155025_7847893469992226314.jpg >
03:52 PM Tom_L: cute :)
03:52 PM XXCoder: smol compressor
03:52 PM JT-Shop: it's big enough to run impact wrenches
03:52 PM Tom_L: although that's really all i need anymore
03:53 PM Tom_L: yeah
03:53 PM XXCoder: yeah, usually fine unless you need it for tons of air like vacuum hold
03:53 PM Tom_L: we wore one of those out and got a sanborn 5hp 80 gal
03:54 PM Tom_L: i fixed the valves on it a couple times but the tank was about shot too
04:09 PM XXCoder: cool :)
04:12 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (287KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/LvdOLjBJicYqjbkOfhthzXqW/20230222_161104_8382937703243665050.jpg >
04:12 PM JT-Shop: that's the compressor for the machine shop and garage
04:14 PM Tom_L: that's more like it :)
04:14 PM Tom_L: i don't have a big drier on mine though
04:15 PM JT-Shop: needed that for my plasma torch
04:15 PM Tom_L: i had to leave mine on the skid since the drain was out the bottom and the valve wouldn't quite fit otherwise
04:22 PM Tom_L: is that a kennedy top box?
04:22 PM Tom_L: i wish i still had mine..
04:22 PM JT-Shop: waterloo
04:22 PM Tom_L: looks the same
04:23 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:27 PM travis_farmer[m]: sweat and sour chicken for supper, at granny's tonight :-)
04:29 PM perry_j1987: i wonder how well this thing would be able to hold position drilling a hole 40mm from the center line
04:29 PM perry_j1987: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/S6786a5a8887f4352b5a11052858c07d8K.jpg
04:29 PM XXCoder: dunno, if it has backlash, not very well
04:30 PM perry_j1987: belt
04:30 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: For a .01" drill, sure.
04:30 PM XXCoder: theres more than one kind of backlash
04:30 PM perry_j1987: aye
04:30 PM XXCoder: like can you rotate it in locked position
04:30 PM XXCoder: or can you move it side to side
04:31 PM XXCoder: someone here made a printed 4th axis thing. it was quite interesting
04:31 PM XXCoder: i have memory of goldfish on some stuff so forgot name
04:33 PM perry_j1987: ya i was contemplating some sort of solenoid pin to lock things in each 90 degree
04:33 PM XXCoder: how large parts you plan to use?
04:34 PM XXCoder: if its small ones you probably could just use collet blocks
04:34 PM XXCoder: it comes in 4 or 6 sided versions
04:34 PM perry_j1987: i am playing with the idea of making a 4 sided rotary fixture setup
04:36 PM Tom_L: i diy http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/mount/Rotary_mount12.jpg
04:37 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/Rotary1.jpg
04:37 PM Tom_L: before
04:40 PM perry_j1987: i could pick up a cheap harmonic drive too it looks like
04:40 PM XXCoder: ah yes! harmonic drive is what I meant with some parts printed 4th axis someone made
04:47 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, that was skunkworks
04:47 PM XXCoder: ahh ys thanks
04:49 PM roycroft: the raindrops are getting thicker and thicker
04:49 PM roycroft: i think they are going to turn white soon
04:49 PM JT-Shop: wow I built the machine shop 12 years ago
04:50 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aULKb7VSnK4&t=147s
04:52 PM XXCoder: yep :D thanks
04:52 PM XXCoder: well perry you could see that one to get ideas
04:52 PM Tom_L: he has several videos on that
04:52 PM XXCoder: yeah
04:52 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK4zgFTD2SA
04:58 PM sliptonicBradCol: Hey everyone. I've been hanging around the LinuxCNC/Machinekit communities for a long time. I'm also one of the core developers of FreeCAD and maintainer of the Path workbench. I've recently founded an public benefit "Open-Core" company building a commercial product around FreeCAD. I'm in the process of hiring full-time engineers to work on the core project and help build the company's product. The company is called Ondsel and
04:58 PM sliptonicBradCol: current job descriptions are here: https://ondsel.com/careers/
04:58 PM sliptonicBradCol: I'm happy to talk about this or anything else in the FreeCAD/Path world.
04:59 PM sliptonicBradCol: s/an/a/
04:59 PM skunkworks[m]: it has snowed a bunch here today..
04:59 PM Tom_L: and it's still coming
05:01 PM * JT-Shop watches Leo using an adze
05:04 PM Tom_L: temp started dropping here ~3hrs ago
05:04 PM JT-Shop: Friday is cooler here
05:04 PM Tom_L: overnite 17F
05:05 PM Tom_L: 38 currently
05:05 PM Tom_L: started out around 60
05:05 PM JT-Shop: 59 here
05:05 PM Tom_L: better bring the hose in :)
05:05 PM JT-Shop: tomorrow night I need to
05:11 PM JT-Shop: up to ep60
05:28 PM perry_j1987: just went for a hike in the sleet and freezing rain
05:28 PM roycroft: sweet
05:29 PM roycroft: the new pbx has a built-in fax server, and it was trivial to set up
05:29 PM roycroft: now i can convert my vfax number to a regular did, and save some money
05:29 PM roycroft: and not have to log into the sip provider to send a fax
05:33 PM Tom_L: ppl still send fax?
05:34 PM XXCoder: no, but businesses yeah
05:34 PM XXCoder: need physical evidence
05:34 PM Tom_L: pdf
05:38 PM Tom_L: i used to have my printer fax set up. every now and then i'd receive patient information from wrong numbers
05:39 PM Tom_L: they'd get real concerned when i'd call them up
05:39 PM XXCoder: ouch lol
05:39 PM Tom_L: i'd have it off but get tired of the constant ringing so i'd turn it on to get them to shut that up
05:39 PM XXCoder: tty was great for that
05:40 PM Tom_L: happened more than once
05:40 PM XXCoder: spam calls would get what sounds like fax
05:40 PM XXCoder: but it isnt
05:40 PM XXCoder: i miss tty days sometimes lol
05:40 PM XXCoder: that tech went dead in early-mod 2010, though usage went way down before that
05:44 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
05:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I answered a spam call the other day and it was some collections agency looking for someone not related to any of our numbers. No spam calls since.
05:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: their spam was from random numbers in a certain range of area code and prefix
05:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if it happens to you, just start rambling off all sorts of random official sounding info, and ask them questions about their shoe size, favorite colors for the call logs before you can answer any of their questions, and don't give them time to answer :)
05:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: she was confused and apologetic
05:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they also hire people that take comments very very personally
05:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so it's worth a try
06:20 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:56 PM skunkworks[m]: guy at works calls me and says - you know stepper drives - come and help us.. I walked down and they were trying to replace a stepper drive with an newer drive that had +/- inputs.. I asked them for data sheets for both and said - common the positive - hook that up to supply and the -'s to the step and dir outputs.
06:58 PM skunkworks[m]: that worked then called and said - how do you revers the direction of the stepper - they had reversed everything.. I said - how do you revers a 3 phase motor? he said - just flip a pair... I said stepper is the same.. now it is working..
07:15 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/2lrGQbMEHaQ
07:15 PM XXCoder: crazy
07:15 PM XXCoder: casting big gear low tech
07:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sliptonic (Brad Collette): let me know if you need any hardware help :)
07:21 PM XXCoder: insanely dangerous, that video
07:40 PM XXCoder: man the ending
08:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no pain, no gain!
08:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no risk, no reward?
08:22 PM XXCoder: guess so lol
08:22 PM XXCoder: man I bet that video is nightmare to osha workers
08:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I bet their safety records show that less than 2 children per year are lost at that shop
08:23 PM XXCoder: there is children in video
08:23 PM XXCoder: though earlier part just watching, and later milling, sitting on gear while its being milled
08:24 PM XXCoder: I notice they skipped the lathe part though
08:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: in those countries they have large families
08:25 PM XXCoder: yeah by average, in fairly high risk for children to die, people have more kids
08:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: read the comments on that video
08:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: first thing i thought of was what would uhmerican kids do it that room first? Try to stop the spinning shafts with their hands or put their face in front of the shaper? or shove their friend into it?
08:33 PM XXCoder: dunno I didnt like many comments
08:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://youtu.be/GVj0lyXv5hI?t=39 newer CNC and cleaner shop
08:58 PM XXCoder: much cleaner. much much cleaner
09:01 PM XXCoder: uh apparently web archives save videos too
09:01 PM XXCoder: anyone have old ichguck youtube channel url?
09:05 PM XXCoder: dont have ability to search for logs drat
09:09 PM XXCoder: no luck so far.
09:09 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmwhCL92ZQRSVqFe3jGwJSQ/videos this was linked by ich himself
09:10 PM XXCoder: but page just shows older version of youtube and caption "Cette chaƮne n'existe pas."
09:10 PM XXCoder: channel does not exist apparently
10:06 PM PlaidRabbit[m]: Is there an easy way to call a file from another? The file I want to call isn't a sub, it's a whole file. I want to run the same thing with various offsets. (So the main file will just have a G10 L2 P0 X1 Y2 ?????? G10 L2 P0 X11 Y2 ??????
10:08 PM XXCoder: isnt that g98/g99
10:08 PM XXCoder: forgot if function call can use other files but should if I remember right
10:09 PM satiowadahc[m]: Remap? M300?
10:11 PM roycroft: it looks and feels like it's going to snow tonight
10:11 PM XXCoder: roy yeah
10:11 PM PlaidRabbit[m]: G98, G99 are for canned cycle returns levels. reading on M300 It's not worth a huge effort, just trying to be smarter about my gcode. I can also brute for it easy enough
10:13 PM satiowadahc[m]: M300 is just adding a line to your ini file, works fairly slick, can edit the file and call m300 without restarting lcnc.
10:14 PM satiowadahc[m]: https://linuxcnc.org/docs/html/remap/remap.html#_an_minimal_example_remapped_code
10:14 PM satiowadahc[m]: Can also add the subroutine path so you can change the directory
10:15 PM PlaidRabbit[m]: The "right" solution is to convert my file to a sub, and then do an o call
10:15 PM XXCoder: PlaidRabbit[m]: yeah i misremembered or its for different machine
10:15 PM XXCoder: I barely used function call at all when I used to edit gcode '
10:16 PM PlaidRabbit[m]: I'm just typing in my 20 ish offsets manually and pressing run atm. Not elegant, but it works.
10:17 PM XXCoder: yeah. one postive about it is that if you have to resume somewhere you can easly start at one fixture
10:17 PM XXCoder: for example if it stops at 5 and you lose position in gcode somehow
10:20 PM PlaidRabbit[m]: Yeah, this is one-off enough I'll just do it manually. I'm drilling holes to anchor my spoilboard down more tightly to my bed. (I have a 4'x8' router)
10:20 PM PlaidRabbit[m]: and I have a file that does the counterbored holes
10:25 PM PlaidRabbit[m]: s/the/one/, s/holes/hole/
