01:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: of course it's not a serious question
02:03 PM Tom_L: tristate
02:07 PM * c101horse8332[m] uploaded an image: (15611KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/YPaaXvAtAOAhrsfgXmVHFKcp/IMG_20230221_201634.png >
02:07 PM c101horse8332[m]: found me a piece of aluminium, lets see if i can make some chips tomorrow
02:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: c101horseπ³π±: oohh which lathe is that in the background?
02:10 PM c101horse8332[m]: Its my AI Hembrug
02:10 PM * c101horse8332[m] uploaded an image: (1015KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/ClMLWFWPkgzrRPHCiFSIrbPS/IMG_20230221_210759.jpg >
04:17 PM travis_farmer[m]: so... providing i can find something for a spoilboard, i hope to make some chips (PVC) tomorrow. just doing some cutouts on a PVC panel to be my control panel. try a few simple cuts first, and then... more cuts as i figure out where stuff will go on the panel. :-) worst part will be locating a spoilboard, and figuring out how to hold everything down. the cutouts will be using holding-tabs, so they shouldn't go flying out at mach-20.
04:17 PM travis_farmer[m]: been a long time since i made chips with this machine. :-)
04:33 PM travis_farmer[m]: everybody taking a nap or something? ;-)
05:05 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:13 PM Tom_L: shhh
06:37 PM Tom_L: JT[m], any news on the sat?
06:46 PM XXCoder: travis_farmer[m]: pvc is lots fun
06:46 PM XXCoder: be careful with it, and dont burn it
07:22 PM * roycroft is looking at small lasers again
07:22 PM XXCoder: with little sharks?
07:22 PM roycroft: i'd rather avoid the sharks
07:22 PM XXCoder: ;) anyway making a laser cutter or?
07:23 PM roycroft: no, for branding
07:23 PM roycroft: i.e. burning a logo into a piece of wod
07:23 PM roycroft: wood
07:23 PM roycroft: so a fairly low power one would be fine
07:24 PM XXCoder: many of china ones is very low power, but I see some interesting ones like one reviewed by myfordboy
07:24 PM roycroft: i just don't know if the $300 ones are even worth messing around with
07:24 PM XXCoder: its portable and can be set to engrave small area of large objects by removing bed
07:24 PM XXCoder: issue is those isnt cheap
07:24 PM roycroft: i'd rather not spend $1200, but that seems to be the price tag for one that is halfway decent
07:25 PM roycroft: i like the ones on tripods
07:25 PM roycroft: that would be the most convenient
08:35 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/fUyQEPzpkLk
08:35 PM XXCoder: pretty interesting
08:38 PM roycroft: i've been watching this guy's videos lately:
08:38 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwDZSGPGtgY
08:38 PM roycroft: he's pretty skilled, and has a good eye for design
08:40 PM XXCoder: nice
08:45 PM roycroft: he doesn't have too many videos, but most of them are really good
08:45 PM roycroft: and i definitely want to start using the swallow tail joint in my lamps
08:45 PM roycroft: and pretty much a lot of other stuff - that
08:45 PM roycroft: is an amazing joint
08:54 PM XXCoder: just had a thought
08:54 PM XXCoder: lamp made from stacks of joinery
08:54 PM XXCoder: then lathed to make round
09:01 PM roycroft: i'm not planning on making products with turning as the primary operation
09:01 PM roycroft: my turning will be for ancillary parts
09:01 PM roycroft: for now, at least
09:02 PM roycroft: anything can change at any time
09:02 PM roycroft: especially when new opportunities for revenue streams arise
09:02 PM XXCoder: it would be final step but ok
09:03 PM XXCoder: and yeah, best to plan for plan changes too :D
09:27 PM roycroft: well that sucks
09:27 PM roycroft: my stereo amp started making a buzzing noise, and then some of the magic smoke escaped
09:28 PM roycroft: that's going to be a $1k repair :(
09:31 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Sounds like power supply caps
09:32 PM roycroft: if i'm lucky
09:32 PM roycroft: and if that's all it is it's only a $500 repair
09:32 PM roycroft: but the amp has probably never been recapped, so i'll have all of them done
09:32 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: My workshop amp went like that. I guess running it for years with the fan clogged up with plasma dust wasn't the best idea π
09:32 PM roycroft: but if any of the output transistors got fried, that adds a lot of extra expense
09:33 PM roycroft: they're pricey transistors, and they should be matched
09:34 PM roycroft: this amp was made in the mid '70s
09:34 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Even the most expensive transistors wouldn't add up to much unless you are in the kw+ power range. Matching them might cost a bit more depending on how close.
09:34 PM roycroft: i was planning on recapping it when i had the time anyway
09:34 PM roycroft: its mcintosh
09:35 PM XXCoder: cant buy like 10 of em then get best match?
09:35 PM roycroft: now i have to live with the built-in tv speakers until i get the amp repaired
09:36 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Or buy one of the $30 class D amps of amazon π
09:36 PM roycroft: i'll put up with the crappy, tinny tv sound
09:36 PM roycroft: perhaps it will motivate me to spend less time in front of the tv
09:38 PM roycroft: my pre-amp might get me by for a while
09:39 PM roycroft: if i disconnect half the speakers
09:39 PM roycroft: i have stacked advents, and i don't think i want to put a 4 ohm load on the pre-amp
09:40 PM roycroft: the pre-amp is what i was planning on having serviced soon, but i guess those plans just changed
