03:27 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning ☕️
03:33 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:33 AM travis_farmer[m]: what a morning... the fan belt on the oil furnace died over night, so not much heat... when the hardware store opens, my father will pick up a new belt and drop it off for me to put on.
04:49 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:51 AM Tom_L: morning
06:53 AM mrec: I really wonder does anyone use a steady post / follow rest with brass support (without bearings)?
07:14 AM perry_j1987: some do
07:14 AM perry_j1987: i dont :P
07:15 AM perry_j1987: tried and promptly modified it to add bearings lol
07:26 AM mrec: I only tried once it messes up the stock and wears too quick
07:37 AM Tom_L: 18°F hi 48°
08:00 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:03 AM JT-Shop: Tom_L, want a sneak peek at Mesact II?
08:03 AM JT-Shop: https://github.com/jethornton/mesact2
08:08 AM Tom_L: i'll take a look here in a bit
08:10 AM Tom_L: mostly formatting?
08:14 AM JT-Cave: total redesign with some copy and past of code
08:22 AM Tom_L: maybe i should clone it as well?
08:23 AM Tom_L: booting to linux..
08:25 AM travis_farmer[m]: interesting... ordered 10 tool-holder forks (on an impulse buy) from Amazon... got 15 in the mail... BONUS! checked Amazon, and they say they only shipped 10. must be they multiplied in transit. ;-)
08:28 AM CloudEvil: keep them in a drawar for a few weeks see what happens.
08:31 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, missing files for build
08:32 AM Tom_L: mesact2/debian for one
08:34 AM Tom_L: ran the script..
08:34 AM JT-Cave: it's not ready to build yet, I just copied debian from mesact so the files are wrong
08:35 AM Tom_L: i see..
08:35 AM JT-Cave: just run from terminal
08:35 AM Tom_L: moved firmware to it's own tab
08:35 AM JT-Cave: yup changed to the gui to keep it 800x600 and massive changes to code in some places
08:36 AM Tom_L: cleaner
08:41 AM Tom_L: long road ahead :)
08:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: odd, seems to be thunder and lightening...
08:45 AM Lcvette[m]: JT-Shop: i want a sneak peak
08:45 AM Lcvette[m]: :d
08:45 AM Tom_L: dl
08:46 AM Tom_L: err clone it
08:46 AM Lcvette[m]: * 😲
08:46 AM Tom_L: then run the script
08:47 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:02 AM Tom_L: lemme know when you're ready for testing..
09:03 AM Lcvette[m]: o/ JT-Cave
09:03 AM Lcvette[m]: mesact-2 lookin good
10:14 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:51 AM JT[m]: You can select a board and some daughter cards now
10:55 AM JT[m]: I'm trying to make it easier to use and keep it 800 x 600 for small screens
11:55 AM Lcvette[m]: JT: nice!
12:06 PM JT[m]: What do you think about the general layout?
12:37 PM c101horse8332[m]: i cant for some reason do the isolcpu's on the new nuc(i abandoned the pi because no probe basic)
12:47 PM bjorkintosh: https://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/922968/4a69aa7f1f2332d7/
12:48 PM bjorkintosh: An overview of single-purpose Linux distributions
12:48 PM bjorkintosh: linuxcnc was not listed!
12:49 PM c101horse8332[m]: but first i need to get this thing back working, i think i did something stupid and now it wont reboot
12:49 PM Tom_L: why do most ppl use grub instead of lilo?
12:50 PM bjorkintosh: it's automatic, I think?
12:50 PM TurBoss: i use systemd-boot lol
12:53 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: because lilo is ooooooold? and as far as i know not really capable of booting UEFI systems?
12:53 PM JT[m]: What's lilo?
12:53 PM Tom_L: a boot manager
12:53 PM Loetmichel: JT[m]: the "standard" linux bootloader before grub
12:55 PM Tom_L: just curious due to the recent issue with grub & 12
12:56 PM Loetmichel: It literally means "LInux LOader" IIRC.
12:56 PM Loetmichel: (last system i had that used that was suse 7.3 though.)
12:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: which and when did the last Linux distro ship with LILO?
12:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: when was Suse 7.3?
12:57 PM Tom_L: i dunno but on of my fairly recent installs asked me
12:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i was thinking that it was likely them
12:58 PM Loetmichel: no idea. i recently had a small "microlinux" on an embedded system that still prompted with lilo
12:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: of the Debians?
12:58 PM Loetmichel: but thats not "mainstream"
12:58 PM Tom_L: capn, yes
12:59 PM Loetmichel: CaptainHindsight: 2001
01:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.joonet.de/lilo/
01:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the final was 2015-11-22
01:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: "recent issue with grub & 12", because it's all old versions?
01:06 PM Tom_L: perry_j987 was having problems installing it with bookworm
01:06 PM Tom_L: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/10ze15e/libreboot_machine_debian_installs_but_cant_boot/
01:06 PM Tom_L: pasted that
01:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: "why were they against it?" , they wanted to keep using BIOS and GRUB vs having to learn how to change to open source firmware and I never heard the actual reason why Grub2 kept their codebase, it was likely due to external forces, politics etc with the Grub devs from how dramatically they shifted preference.,
01:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: some of the drama might be in the archives of the grub dev mail list
01:12 PM Tom_L: i'll let it stay there
01:12 PM XXCoder: interesting. ok
01:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: EFI at the time was still in development
01:14 PM XXCoder: watching thomas restore, wow very rare to see him use lathe
01:14 PM XXCoder: in fact its first time I see him use one
01:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: if a company makes 50 cents to a dollar for every BIOS shipped on a motherboard, wouldn't they fight to keep that business going?
01:15 PM XXCoder: i suppose, but honestly im not affected
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: plus the usual backdoors and privacy being scary since 9/11
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: now they are even pushing EFI into RISC-V
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: EFI has never been needed
01:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: firmware vendors just convince hardware vendors that they need it
01:20 PM Loetmichel: yeah, plus point for BIOS only systems. Those are so small there is no room for a backdoor
01:20 PM XXCoder: saw one where they port a game to bios
01:20 PM XXCoder: boot pc up and play it like pc is a console
01:21 PM Loetmichel: s/no room/no room to hide
01:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Loetmichel: great for your 10+ year old systems that still use it
01:22 PM Loetmichel: CaptainHindsight: indeed. Still: why does EFI need network card drivers and internet access?
01:23 PM Loetmichel: thats just a safety disaster waiting to happen
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: has already been happening
01:23 PM Loetmichel: true
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh well, they don't want to change and you can't get register specs to write your way around it
01:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: even AMD stopped releasing specs and support about 10 years ago so that you could use corebbot
01:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: coreboot
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Loetmichel: how has winter been around you?
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: have you had much snow?
01:30 PM roguish[m]1: CaptHindsight: theer has always been colusion between hardware and software makers
01:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: news to me :)
01:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: EFI started when wintel was still the only game in town
01:32 PM roguish[m]1: the constant upgrade game is a marketing ploy to sell more junk
01:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: do you really want me left behind?
01:33 PM roguish[m]1: noooo, not you......
01:34 PM roguish[m]1: anybody but you.
01:44 PM roycroft: if we leave him behind we won't have to see his behind
01:44 PM roycroft: there is that to consider
01:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: please stop staring at my behind
02:00 PM XXCoder: man thomas channel tells me, if you are a woodshop guy and if someone asks "how many clamps you need?" the answer would be "yes"
02:00 PM XXCoder: alternately, answer could be "N+1"
02:02 PM roycroft: yes, sort of
02:02 PM roycroft: i have a small shop
02:02 PM roycroft: i could use more clamps
02:02 PM roycroft: but i do not have the space for more clamps
02:02 PM roycroft: so i've learned to live with what i have
02:02 PM roycroft: which is still a lot of clamps, btw
02:04 PM XXCoder: fun lol
02:07 PM XXCoder: ohh looks like fun inheirance machining video
02:10 PM travis_farmer[m]: OFF-TOPIC: any other website admins getting an influx of SPAM/SCAM hits by an email domain ending in .top? i have been getting spam-bot regs on a a website i moderate, pretty heavy all day.
03:48 PM Loetmichel: CaptainHindsight: what winter? was barely below zero celsius here at all so far.
03:49 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: well, carpenters sure need a lot of clamps. and are always one short. so: true
03:49 PM XXCoder: lol ok
04:08 PM roycroft: roycroft.us/Clamps.jpeg
04:09 PM roycroft: i was a little short on what i needed that day
04:10 PM XXCoder: too bac theres no such thing as real bag of holding
04:11 PM roycroft: i did not have my vacuum clamping system working at the time i did that glue-up
04:12 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/Sliding-Arm-Bar-Clamp-Deep/dp/B000GK8PL0/
04:12 PM roycroft: amazon occasionally have a factory return of one of those for sale pretty cheap
04:12 PM XXCoder: 107? dang
04:12 PM roycroft: i bought one a couple years ago, and i'd like to get 3 more eventually
04:13 PM roycroft: i don't need a clamp like that often, but when i do, it comes in really handy
04:14 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/New_Cabinets/34_Veneer_Glue_Up_1.jpeg
04:14 PM roycroft: those cauls have a slight crown on the bottom side
04:15 PM roycroft: they worked out really well for that glue-up
04:15 PM roycroft: i did have my vacuum clamping at the time i did that, but i did not have a big enough bag
04:17 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/New_Cabinets/35_Veneer_Glue_Up_2.jpeg
04:17 PM roycroft: you can see them better in that picture
04:20 PM XXCoder: I think I remember those pictures
04:22 PM roycroft: that was from last summer, when i built the hardware storage cabinets
04:24 PM XXCoder: those drawers?
04:24 PM XXCoder: it was nice work of yours
04:25 PM roycroft: yes, and thanks
05:20 PM JT[m]: Damn network is screwed up
05:28 PM roguish[m]1: JT: hey, SS payday is early. shows in my bank
05:33 PM perry_j1987: https://amzn.to/3YVBH8k wonder how something like this would work with probe basic. says has vesa mount as well
05:39 PM JT[m]: Can't stop Firefox from adding https// to 192.168.1.1
05:39 PM JT[m]: And I can't get internet to work
05:40 PM roguish[m]1: JT: reboot. or power cycle. the ultimate cure.
05:41 PM JT[m]: Done that
05:41 PM JT[m]: Starlink says I have a bad cable connection
05:42 PM roguish[m]1: can you get a general starlink status?
05:43 PM JT[m]: Starlink is connected to the internet
05:43 PM JT[m]: Get that from my phone app
05:43 PM roguish[m]1: shrug. no idea.........
05:43 PM JT[m]: I think it's the ethernet adspter
05:44 PM JT[m]: So I'm fucked
05:44 PM roguish[m]1: still chatting here....
05:44 PM JT[m]: On my phone
05:44 PM roguish[m]1: oh. figures. ok
05:45 PM roguish[m]1: get another adapter. fast.
05:45 PM roguish[m]1: too bad it's late Friday........
05:48 PM JT[m]: Takes a couple of weeks to get one
05:49 PM roguish[m]1: that blows
05:51 PM roguish[m]1: can ya borrow one somewhere, somehow
05:51 PM perry_j1987: what kind of ethernet adapter
05:51 PM JT[m]: Need a magical way to use a mobile hot spot with my lan
05:52 PM JT[m]: Starlink
05:53 PM JT[m]: Do you really think someone would break their system so mine can work?
05:53 PM roguish[m]1: maybe someone has an extra.....
05:54 PM XXCoder: starlink is very expensive. doubt it
05:54 PM JT[m]: I do know one person that has starlink
05:54 PM XXCoder: jt what exactly is broken? cable, ethernet port or module its on>?
05:54 PM JT[m]: I might be able to use his to troubleshoot with
05:54 PM XXCoder: check if you have https everywhere plugin
05:55 PM XXCoder: if so, disable it for a min
05:56 PM XXCoder: jt ok theres steps. you at browser?
05:56 PM JT[m]: Starlink is connected to the internet, my lan all pc's are there but can't get oit
05:56 PM XXCoder: open firefox at some pc
05:56 PM JT[m]: Ok
05:57 PM XXCoder: lemme screenshot a sec
05:57 PM perry_j1987: JT[m] my asus router is setup as repeater mode to my mobile hotspot here
05:57 PM JT[m]: BRB time to tuck the chickens in
05:57 PM perry_j1987: shares the internet with ethernet and lan devices
05:57 PM XXCoder: JT[m]: https://imgur.com/DatgTWd.png
05:58 PM JT[m]: Hmm wonder if I can do that with my dlink dir622
05:59 PM JT[m]: No connection on widbloes or linux
06:03 PM roguish[m]1: do you have a router somewhere in the line? check the dns's
06:06 PM JT[m]: For?
06:07 PM roguish[m]1: are they correct? can you ping out? ping 1.1.1.1
06:08 PM JT[m]: I have no connection out
06:09 PM roguish[m]1: don't know what to tell ya....
06:09 PM Tom_L: you power cycled it all?
06:14 PM JT[m]: 10 times
06:17 PM Tom_L: does it give any messages?
06:19 PM JT[m]: Starlink says it's a cable problem
06:19 PM XXCoder: jt managed to go to 192.168.1.1 with just http?
06:19 PM Tom_L: between the dish and router
06:19 PM Tom_L: is the most likely cause it says
06:20 PM Tom_L: round or rectangular dish?
06:21 PM Tom_L: the rectangular one is more prone to the cable issue
06:22 PM Tom_L: The connector on the dish is the most common source of issues
06:22 PM Tom_L: figures...
06:25 PM JT[m]: Wonderful, yup square dish
06:25 PM Tom_L: also is it in the stowed position or pointing to the sky?
06:26 PM JT[m]: Pointed at the sat
06:26 PM Tom_L: says to ck the cable.. most likely problem
06:27 PM JT[m]: What do you check for?
06:27 PM Tom_L: https://www.starlinkhardware.com/how-to-fix-the-starlink-disconnected-error/
06:27 PM Tom_L: reseat the cable carefully
06:28 PM JT[m]: Starlink is connected
06:28 PM Tom_L: did the ip range change for some reason?
06:28 PM JT[m]: Starlink says poor cable connection
06:28 PM Tom_L: just guessing now...
06:28 PM Tom_L: yeah i know
06:28 PM JT[m]: No
06:29 PM JT[m]: Tried another modem and same
06:29 PM Tom_L: router
06:29 PM Tom_L: ?
06:30 PM Tom_L: i know next to nothing about starlink stuff
06:30 PM XXCoder: got more cables and laptop?
06:35 PM JT[m]: I have
06:40 PM XXCoder: try connect directly?
06:43 PM JT[m]: To?
06:44 PM XXCoder: dish cable to your laptop
06:44 PM XXCoder: to check if its cable issue or not
06:46 PM JT[m]: You can't connect directly to the dish
06:47 PM XXCoder: ahh hmm
06:47 PM JT[m]: Anyway it's late and I'm tired and frustrated so time to call it a night
06:47 PM Lcvette[m]: JT: can you use your phone as wireless hotspot until you get a fixed starlink?
06:48 PM JT[m]: With the laptop yes
06:48 PM JT[m]: Dunno how to connect to the lan
06:48 PM Lcvette[m]: no wifi adapters?
06:48 PM Lcvette[m]: or wifi extender with lan ports?
06:48 PM JT[m]: Nope
06:49 PM Lcvette[m]: thats something you could grab locally from any box store
06:49 PM Lcvette[m]: it connects to your hotspot and then has a bank of ethernet ports you can put by your hub
06:49 PM JT[m]: Only box store is Wal-Mart lol
06:49 PM Lcvette[m]: im sure they have it
06:49 PM JT[m]: Hmm my buddy may have one
06:50 PM Lcvette[m]: i use one in the shop for connecting ethernet to my machine pc's when installing debian
06:50 PM JT[m]: I'll look tomorrow, thanks
06:50 PM * Lcvette[m] uploaded an image: (329KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/VvFAiUKnLXyOOKpqXrrTzMvs/IMG_20230217_194943299.jpg >
06:51 PM JT[m]: Man this sucks
06:51 PM Lcvette[m]: I just got done using mine to make a redundant ssd for the mill
06:51 PM JT[m]: Netgear
06:51 PM Lcvette[m]: Or you could simply buy some cheap usb wifi dongles
06:52 PM Lcvette[m]: Yeah but they make lots of various brands that do the same thing
06:52 PM JT[m]: I have a USB to ethernet adapter...
06:52 PM Tom_L: i used an old wifi router in the shop as a repeater
06:53 PM Lcvette[m]: Jt that sgould get you connected to the hotspot
06:53 PM Lcvette[m]: May just have to move it around from pc to k
06:53 PM Lcvette[m]: Pc as needed
06:53 PM * Lcvette[m] uploaded an image: (132KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/wFGFWCwJrlpCSspCvtNmlgwY/20230217_195258_7711718094549108477.jpg >
06:54 PM Lcvette[m]: I keep like 5 of these around
06:54 PM Lcvette[m]: They are like $10 each
06:54 PM Lcvette[m]: Walmart will definitely have those
06:54 PM Lcvette[m]: Might be more than 10 bucks there though
06:56 PM JT[m]: Ok
06:58 PM Lcvette[m]: Where is your local walmart? I can check availabkity for you if you want
06:58 PM Tom_L: https://www.walmart.com/store/19-poplar-bluff-mo
06:59 PM Tom_L: all seem to be shipped
07:00 PM Tom_L: unless you wanna pay fifty bux for one
07:04 PM Lcvette[m]: https://www.walmart.com/ip/NETGEAR-AC600-Dual-Band-WiFi-USB-Adapter-A6100-10000s/47507531?fulfillmentIntent=In-store&athbdg=L1101
07:04 PM Lcvette[m]: that looks like the cheapest option for a right now fix
07:05 PM Lcvette[m]: unless you can connec tyour laptop to your router and share the wifi through it
07:05 PM Tom_L: yup
07:05 PM Lcvette[m]: but i am not sure how that would work
07:06 PM Lcvette[m]: https://www.walmart.com/ip/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-AC1900-DOCSIS-3-0-Cable-Modem-WiFi-Router-Certified-for-Xfinity-by-Comcast-Spectrum-Cox-more-1-9Gbps-C7000/46179354?fulfillmentIntent=In-store
07:06 PM Lcvette[m]: this is what i got
07:06 PM Lcvette[m]: it was real nice when we had the hurricane take out power for 9 days, used it to share hotspot and streamed netflix with the inverter generator running
07:06 PM Lcvette[m]: streamed through all our tv's
07:07 PM Lcvette[m]: cell bill was ugly that month though
07:07 PM Lcvette[m]: lol
07:19 PM perry_j1987: i still have not gotten internet hooked up at our new place
07:19 PM perry_j1987: i got a 25 bucks a month visible plan and stuck the sim in an old iphone
07:19 PM perry_j1987: and used wifi router in repeater mode
07:19 PM perry_j1987: its been suprisingly enough internet for our streaming and other needs at home
07:32 PM perry_j1987: https://www.fluidlinesystems.net/Bijur-D3607-V5W-Gear-Pump-OBSOLETE-p/d3607.htm I got that mounted on this https://www.fluidlinesystems.net/Bijur-5-Gallon-Reservoir-D3030-p/d3030.htm sitting out at my shop. what do you guys think its actually worth?
07:41 PM roycroft: my composite nail gun has arrived
07:41 PM roycroft: i have some concerns about it, though
07:41 PM roycroft: well, about the nails in particular
07:42 PM roycroft: i wonder if they're especially dangerous or something
07:42 PM roycroft: they arrived in an amazon-size box (this did not come from amazon, though), extremely well-padded
07:42 PM roycroft: but opening the box was a major ordeal
07:42 PM CloudEvil: They're just GFRP nylon
07:42 PM roycroft: the shipper had glued the flaps down on the top and the bottom of the box
07:43 PM roycroft: and then they stapled the top and bottom with eight staples each side
07:43 PM CloudEvil: Probably more used to regular ones
07:43 PM CloudEvil: If you don't do that with regular nails, they fall out of the packaging
07:43 PM roycroft: and then they covered up the staples and the flaps with three layers of fiberglass-reinforced tape
07:43 PM roycroft: i ended up cutting one of the sides out of the box to get it open
07:44 PM CloudEvil: Probably sells a lot more regular nails and similar hardware.
07:44 PM roycroft: it was from nail gun depot
07:44 PM roycroft: so they likely do sell a lot of metal nails
07:44 PM roycroft: the nail gun itself was in a separate, smaller, but still amazon size box
07:44 PM roycroft: it was loose in the box with no padding
07:44 PM CloudEvil: Shipments I get from a metal fixings supplier are comparably rigid
07:45 PM roycroft: i mean, it was in its plastic case, but the plastic case was just tossed into the big box that was at least 6x bigger than the case
11:28 PM unterhausen: really regretting every having a twitter account at this point, they are going to charge for 2 factor
11:28 PM unterhausen: I deleted everything already though
11:29 PM XXCoder: i deleted my account as soon as I heard elon was buying
11:29 PM XXCoder: paying more for security is a lol
11:29 PM XXCoder: more accounts will get hacked
11:40 PM XXCoder: "Effective March 20, 2023, only Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to use text messages as their two-factor authentication method. Other accounts can use an authentication app or security key for 2FA. Learn more here:"
11:40 PM XXCoder: so tet ones will be billed
11:42 PM unterhausen: I tried to delete my twitter account, but then I got emails that people were trying to log in
11:42 PM unterhausen: that's when I added 2fa
11:43 PM unterhausen: I still have some pictures on there somehow
11:43 PM unterhausen: don't see a way to delete them
11:43 PM XXCoder: probably reference to you by others
11:43 PM XXCoder: ie image @yourtwitternickhere
11:50 PM unterhausen: I guess I'll just keep it. I put a random weather picture in place of my profile pic
11:50 PM XXCoder: nice
