01:08 AM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: we did by dropping the seeds as pods with soil, water and nutrients. They were fired from a CO2 gun like paintballs
01:18 AM XXCoder: nice
01:18 AM XXCoder: those do remind me of coupel that had huge empty lot.
01:18 AM XXCoder: so they used drone to drop tree seeds randomly
01:18 AM XXCoder: after decade its full of trees now
01:18 AM Lcvette[m]: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/24-hal-components/48222-hal-help-for-home-to-index-with-stepgen-firmware-update
01:18 AM Lcvette[m]: Updated the thread on home to index with open loop stepgen config but with encoder feedback
01:18 AM Lcvette[m]: works flawlessly
01:34 AM CaptHindsight[m]: 🎉
01:48 AM Deejay: moin
03:02 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:55 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning ☕️
04:55 AM Tom_L: morning
04:57 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:58 AM JT-Cave: hmm we are under a tornado watch until 12pm
04:58 AM JT-Cave: https://radar.weather.gov/station/kpah/standard
04:58 AM JT-Cave: looks like the severe weather is a bit south of us
05:53 AM travis_farmer[m]: 46F :-)
06:45 AM travis_farmer[m]: MMMmm... pop-tarts for breakfast ;-)
06:59 AM * JT-Cave has a slice of toasted brioche, a bit of white sharp cheddar, cantaloupe and blackberries
06:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: sounds fancy
06:59 AM JT-Cave: healthy
07:47 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, you can build now
09:53 AM travis_farmer[m]: well, that was a big success. :-) i bought a air pressure sensor to monitor incoming air PSI. i would have been better with a pressure switch, but the one i bought didn't work. so, the sensor, analog 0-5v, right in to my 7i70 analog input, and a little comp program to convert from volts to PSI, as well as feed the need for a digital "safe value" output to check before a tool change... and it works! i mean, first time out, connected
09:53 AM travis_farmer[m]: it, compiled the comp program, added the lines in my HAL file, and it works! very happy right now! :-)
09:55 AM roguish[m]1: good morning. sunny and crisp here. currently 32, that's Fahrenheit
09:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: 54F here :-P
10:01 AM roycroft: it's -2 here and frosty
10:01 AM roycroft: but it is almost march!
10:03 AM roguish[m]1: ah, 28ish F
10:04 AM JT-Cave: 50°F this morning
10:09 AM roguish[m]1: JT-Cave: how
10:09 AM roguish[m]1: s the popcorn bowl?
10:10 AM JT-Cave: popcorn bowl done, working on a dizzy bowl now
10:11 AM roguish[m]1: pics please
10:11 AM JT-Cave: https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/topic/38707-dizzy-bowl/
10:12 AM JT-Cave: https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/topic/38578-popcorn-bowls/
10:19 AM * JT-Cave goes to work for a biy
10:19 AM JT-Cave: bit
10:28 AM Loetmichel: re from 8 hours of Solidworks training. 3 days to go... maaaan, i'll need to learn a LOT of things (and UNlearn a bunch of bad habits!)
10:31 AM roycroft: i took a solidworks class about 15 years ago
10:31 AM roguish[m]1: RTFM
10:31 AM roycroft: i learned a lot, but there was a lot still to learn when i finished, and i never got a chance to take the next class
10:32 AM roycroft: the problem is that there is no decent fm any more
10:32 AM Loetmichel: indeed
10:32 AM roycroft: because training is too big a profit center
10:32 AM roguish[m]1: best way to learn it is to use it.
10:32 AM roycroft: it's so easy to learn bad habits
10:32 AM Loetmichel: yeah, problem is that i used a glorified blender editor for 3dcad until now
10:32 AM roycroft: training really is very useful
10:33 AM roycroft: i'm not saying i approve of the model
10:33 AM Loetmichel: making the solids isnt that hard or different. Restrictions and parts tree is something i have to put a bit of effort in though.
10:33 AM roycroft: i'm just saying that as things are, training is the best way to learn parametric cad software
10:33 AM roycroft: at least the first commercial grade app
10:34 AM roycroft: after that, i should imagine the skills one develops on the first platform translate to other platforms fairly well
10:35 AM Loetmichel: what i meant is: the parts that deal with "this line is parallel to that and this circle is mirrored there AND always perpendicular to this line" is new to me. As is that parts are actually assemblys of parts that can still be edited.
10:36 AM roguish[m]1: yeah, it's gotten a bit more sophisticated. but you can keep it simple. only worry about what you need.
10:37 AM roguish[m]1: my best rule is to lock everything down. fully constrain everything, unless there is a reason not to. helps keep the entire thing numerically stable internally.
10:38 AM Loetmichel: Roguish[m]: its a difference in the foundations. SW handles assembly of parts. Moi3d (what i used until now) manipulates solids
10:39 AM roguish[m]1: my wife is learning Revit, autodesk's architectural and interior design 3D software. I keep telling her she doesn't need to learn everything, only what she needs.
10:39 AM Loetmichel: a.k.a : SW remebers that that was a block with a circle on it for a drill. If you change the circle the drill hole changes, too. Moi just drills a hole in the block and forgets that the circle ever existed
10:39 AM roguish[m]1: it's like Word or Excel, most people only use a small fraction of there capabiliites
10:40 AM roguish[m]1: theie
10:40 AM Loetmichel: the former makes sense if you want to have an easy way to produce versions. ("oh, this enclosure has to be 5mm longer, but the rest should stay the same")
10:40 AM roguish[m]1: their
10:40 AM Loetmichel: its one measurement edit in SW and a whole new part in Moi
10:42 AM Loetmichel: and thats also what i meant with "i have to unlearn a few bad habits"... because manipulating the solids directly instead of setting constraints and do it the smart way is VERY bad form.
10:43 AM roycroft: i still struggle with making parts scalable and keeping all the restraints right
10:43 AM roycroft: but i'm getting a lot better at it
10:43 AM roycroft: intelligent mating is the key
10:44 AM Loetmichel: yep. knowing where to set the constraints in which way to still have it scaleable without destroying the part is the magic that i will hopefully learn by using it.
10:44 AM Loetmichel: lets just say that i cussed more than a bit today while doing the "exercises"
10:45 AM roycroft: well that's good
10:45 AM roycroft: you learn better by making mistakes
10:45 AM roycroft: at least most people do
10:45 AM roguish[m]1: roycroft: have done any cabinet design with SW?
10:45 AM roycroft: and your native language lends itself to expletives well, so you have a colorful vocabulary from which to choose
10:46 AM roycroft: yes, i have
10:46 AM roguish[m]1: there are full addins for cabinet shops.
10:46 AM roguish[m]1: I'm going to do my kitchen
10:46 AM roycroft: i used to have a sw plugin that makes furnture design easier, but i lost track of it
10:46 AM roguish[m]1: already laid it out, used big blocks.
10:47 AM roguish[m]1: now going to detail the cabinet design. lots of dadoes
10:48 AM roguish[m]1: pre-finished plywood
10:48 AM roguish[m]1: borrowing a fiend's powermatic tablesaw
10:49 AM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/New_Cabinets/02_Hardware-Systainer_Cabinets.jpeg
10:49 AM roycroft: i did that in sw
10:49 AM roguish[m]1: Loetmichel: oh, and remember, that in their cores, all these programs are just massive databases
10:49 AM roguish[m]1: with fancy guis
10:50 AM roguish[m]1: roycroft: viery nice
10:50 AM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/New_Cabinets/36_Counter_top.jpeg
10:50 AM roycroft: the (almost) finished product even resembles the drawings
10:51 AM roycroft: the project is finished, but i never took pics of it after it was finished
10:52 AM roguish[m]1: when i bought my house, 25 years ago, i started a floor plan and lot layout in acad.
10:52 AM roycroft: i started that too, about the same time ago
10:52 AM roycroft: it's almost finished
10:53 AM roycroft: the plot plan i finished a long time ago
10:53 AM rmu: next time buy a house that comes with CAD drawings
10:53 AM roguish[m]1: It has evolved into 3d. first with ProEngineer, now with SW
10:53 AM roycroft: for the floor plan i had been doing bits at a time a i work on the house
10:53 AM roycroft: a year or two ago i put all the pieces together and have a fairly accurate floor plan now
10:54 AM roguish[m]1: oh, yeah. mine evolves over time and project.
10:54 AM roguish[m]1: last thing on the house were the front porch and steps.
10:55 AM roycroft: mine is still in autocad
10:55 AM roycroft: it would be nice to do a 3d version
10:56 AM roycroft: but i have a lot of other stuff going on right now
10:56 AM roycroft: it's not a high priority
10:56 AM roguish[m]1: oh joy, it's up to 40 here. got a bike ride at 10 with a friend. will probably still be in the 40's.
10:57 AM roguish[m]1: chilly
11:02 AM roycroft: ride hard
11:02 AM roycroft: it will keep you warm
11:03 AM roycroft: it's up to 0 here
11:03 AM roycroft: so the frost will be going away soon
11:03 AM roycroft: it is sunny today
11:03 AM roguish[m]1: can't go hard any more. last june my right knee buggered up. torn meniscus out of the blue. got it cleaned up, but it still is sore.
11:03 AM roycroft: and it will get up to 10, which is about average for this time of year
11:04 AM roycroft: i can relate to that
11:04 AM roycroft: i've had knee problems from cycling
11:04 AM roguish[m]1: and in 2016 got afib. lots of years of pushing too hard just trying to keep up with my friends.
11:04 AM roycroft: i haven't raced in decades, but i still feel the pain from back then occasionally
11:06 AM roguish[m]1: cycling is actually pretty good for the knees. no pounding. just gotta go slow and easy. my ortho told me to ride....
11:06 AM roguish[m]1: I've never raced. did a few Friday evening 'races' for me they were just hard workouts. i'm very white. can't run, can't jump.
11:09 AM mrec: pcw-home: can you recommend a part number which is suitable for the expansion port pinheader of the 7i96s?
11:12 AM pcw-home: AMP 1658621-6
11:13 AM pcw-home: (though almost any IDC 26 pin header will work)
11:34 AM JT-Shop_: I get them from amazon
11:34 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:34 AM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DR9J5E8
11:36 AM JT-Shop: https://mesaus.com/product-category/cables/
11:39 AM * JT-Shop cancels work due to rain
11:43 AM * Tom_L thinks JT-Shop was just looking for an excuse
11:44 AM * travis_farmer[m] agrees
11:48 AM perry_j1987: having hell of a time installing bookworm on this computer
11:48 AM perry_j1987: refuses to install grub
11:51 AM perry_j1987: its forced me to actually clean my shop while im waiting for the netinstall to go over my spotty cell hotspot out at the shop lol
11:52 AM perry_j1987: although i found a floor in my shop and i can walk around without tripping... i'd like to figure out why grub is not installing
11:52 AM Lcvette[m]: you need a wired connection
11:52 AM Tom_L: fiber
11:52 AM perry_j1987: no internet available out here
11:52 AM Lcvette[m]: take the pc to the internet
11:52 AM perry_j1987: thought of doing that
11:53 AM perry_j1987: but it would still not install grub lol
11:53 AM Lcvette[m]: you really need an wired connection to ensure you don't have issues after the fact
11:53 AM Lcvette[m]: i had issues installing with wireless within 5 ft of the router and a solid connection
11:53 AM Lcvette[m]: wired connection resolved all my issues
11:54 AM Tom_L: i wired to the shop and added a wifi repeater out there
11:54 AM travis_farmer[m]: use a wireless ethernet bridge, that's what i have in my shop
11:54 AM perry_j1987: i got an install of debian bookworm on this computer now and ended up having to leave the installation choosing to not install grub
11:55 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, what did you do to mesact? the rpi is up to 739mb and still building the .xz file
11:55 AM Tom_L: the x64 stopped at 62.6mb
11:56 AM roycroft: old single-mode slow (1Gb/s) fiber network gear is dirt cheap these days
11:56 AM roycroft: and it has the advantage of being pretty much immune to noise
11:56 AM roycroft: fiber jumpers are also cheap
11:57 AM roycroft: in the town where i work(ed), we had a customer who was really cheap, but whose office was next door to city hall
11:57 AM roycroft: they wanted to lease fiber from the city to connect their call center to their retail store
11:58 AM roycroft: they did not want to pony up for a proper underground fiber cable, but there was a vacant conduit connecting the two buildints
11:58 AM roycroft: buildings
11:58 AM perry_j1987: going to give it another go and disable uefi totally in bios heh
11:58 AM roycroft: we ran a fiber jumper between the buildings, about 120m long, and it's been working that way for over a decade
11:59 AM roycroft: that setup is sketchy as hell, but it seems to work
11:59 AM roycroft: it's sketchy to the point that i insisted they buy a spare fiber jumper, which is still sitting on a shelf and made sure we left a pull string in the conduit to pull the spare when the first one failed
12:00 PM * roycroft would not hesitate to do the same thing from a house to a shop
12:34 PM roycroft: early this morning i got an email from at&t
12:34 PM roycroft: i have an ipad with a data plan from them
12:34 PM roycroft: the email informed me that my data plan was being cancelled as of next month, and that i need to go to their website and pick a new plan
12:35 PM roycroft: i tried to do so but the website is broken
12:35 PM roycroft: i just got another email from them telling me my auto-pay failed (because *they* disabled it), and that my plan expires in 30 minutes
12:35 PM roycroft: and i need to get on my ipad to pick a new plan before it expires
12:35 PM roycroft: my ipad cannot connect to the internet now
12:35 PM roycroft: well, not using the cellular network
12:36 PM roycroft: and their plan rewewal app requires a cell connection - it's not even trying to connect via wifi
12:36 PM roycroft: i'm thinking this was not very well thought-out on their part
12:37 PM roycroft: fortunately i got an android tablet just last week for some product development work, but the android sucks pretty much
12:37 PM perry_j1987: give them a break.. they are a young company still trying to figure things out
12:37 PM roycroft: it's better than nothing, though
12:37 PM perry_j1987: its not like they've been around since the beginning or anything lol
12:38 PM roycroft: they are trying to push me into a $55/month data plan
12:38 PM roycroft: i use this thing only when i'm mobile
12:38 PM roycroft: and i don't sit around watching youtube videos on it - i just use it to check email and access my contacts and calendars
12:39 PM roycroft: i probably use 100Mb/month of data
12:39 PM perry_j1987: you have a smartphone?
12:39 PM roycroft: well, maybe a bit more than that, but certainly <1Gb/month
12:39 PM roycroft: yeah
12:39 PM roycroft: but i can't read the screen
12:39 PM perry_j1987: use it as a hotspot for the tablet
12:39 PM roycroft: i can tether the ipad to it though
12:39 PM perry_j1987: one plan
12:39 PM roycroft: that just adds a complication
12:39 PM roycroft: but it's doable
12:39 PM perry_j1987: not too much
12:39 PM perry_j1987: will auto connect after initial setup when you want it to etc
12:40 PM Tom_L: and even when you don't
12:40 PM roycroft: it's also a lot slower than using at&t directly on the ipad - i've done it before when i'm out of range of the at&t network
12:40 PM roycroft: i turn the hotspot off when i'm not actively using it
02:11 PM travis_farmer[m]: the problem with warmer weather today, is tomorrow we get snow... i can't wait until spring comes, so i can finish my new shop...
02:25 PM XXCoder: dang lol ignore that and remove from log
02:26 PM travis_farmer[m]: keyboard vomit?
02:26 PM XXCoder: nah autoptype
02:28 PM * Lcvette[m] uploaded an image: (182KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/kYvjYrhGPceSatMCoNXHmzAW/20230216_152747_5306503193504433744.jpg >
02:29 PM Lcvette[m]: Tom_L: same, i grabbed a repeater for shop installations
02:29 PM XXCoder: converting to lcnc?
02:29 PM Lcvette[m]: Updating yo a new SSD
02:29 PM XXCoder: nice
02:30 PM XXCoder: ok you guys can now use that password, its not used anywhere now
02:33 PM Lcvette[m]: perry_j1987: i just installed deb 12 in about 4 minutes on ethernet
02:35 PM perry_j1987: try doing it in middle of a valley with spotty cell signal lol
02:36 PM Lcvette[m]: Do you have a repeater?
02:36 PM Lcvette[m]: Wifi extender
02:36 PM Lcvette[m]: I use that and plug a ethernet into the pc, works perfect everytine
02:37 PM perry_j1987: there is no wifi here
02:37 PM perry_j1987: no internet
02:37 PM perry_j1987: shop is in middle of nowhere
02:38 PM perry_j1987: sometimes i even have to run the tools off-grid when the AC power is spotty/brown out lol
02:38 PM travis_farmer[m]: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F3749S1
02:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: perry_j1987: that is the problem I found with out of the way locations
02:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I was hoping that Starlink would at least solve the internet problem
02:46 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, removed
02:46 PM XXCoder: thanks
02:46 PM Tom_L: just don't do it again :)
02:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: where logs come from, seeds
02:49 PM Tom_L: cheaper to baggage check a seed

02:52 PM perry_j1987: ya connectivity issues suck for sure lol
02:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: even in cities i used to have poor cell service
02:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: always ended up somewhere that just had poor coverage
02:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: have to make calls by standing on a ladder in a window facing a water tower or similar
02:58 PM roycroft: when i go to my favorite campground on the south coast there is no cell service
02:58 PM roycroft: i have to drive into town to get service, and then even there i have to drive up to the top of a hill or else it won't work
02:58 PM roycroft: i see this as a feature, though
02:59 PM roycroft: when i'm on a camping trip i don't want to be bothered with phone calls and emails all the time
02:59 PM roycroft: much better to check once every day or two
03:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: have you tried leaving your phone off?
03:02 PM Tom_L: you could make a subaru commercial...
03:03 PM Tom_L: or maybe it was jeep..
03:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe it's the fallout from the Ohio smoke cloud
04:05 PM perry_j1987: hey it finally worked got grub installed heh
04:06 PM perry_j1987: now to reboot
04:08 PM perry_j1987: lol
04:08 PM perry_j1987: i give up

04:09 PM perry_j1987: bleeding edge junk lol

04:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they tend to not have complete enough docs for noobs since they have the mindset of users already knowing how to everything
04:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how to do
04:24 PM perry_j1987: i've been running linux for quite a number of years
04:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: coreboot is another level
04:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i used to work with it
04:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the whole point was to replace PC firmware with Linux BUT....
04:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: even mainstream Linux distro devs including Debian fought against it
04:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they wanted the legacy BIOS conventions to stay
04:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it almost replaced Grub2
04:30 PM perry_j1987: whatever they are doing it cant have passed testing if a vanilla install wont complete
04:45 PM Tom_L: JT[m], that'll make ya dizzy
04:48 PM JT-Woodshop: lol
04:49 PM JT-Woodshop: now where is my De-Sta-Co jig
05:19 PM Lcvette[m]: just an update, i was installing debian 12 earlier and i am having some issues that i have not had before, getting a fsck error 12 upon booting into the installed system.
05:20 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight[m]: why was they against it?
05:20 PM * Lcvette[m] uploaded an image: (1720KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/TDmXwNDhgWxXgHHVwBrkdqBK/image.png >
05:21 PM Lcvette[m]: i tried twice, first time was on an older ssd and i suspected maybe it was time to retire it, but this time was on a new ssd
05:21 PM Lcvette[m]: turboss also is getting this screen after install
05:22 PM Lcvette[m]: anyone else?
05:22 PM TurBoss: its the debian 12 iso?
05:22 PM TurBoss: bug?
05:22 PM TurBoss: * bugged?
05:22 PM TurBoss: sorry cant see images 😄
05:22 PM JT-Shop: hmm the busybox... I've seen that before
05:22 PM Lcvette[m]: TurBoss: o/
05:23 PM JT-Shop: did you check the download?
05:23 PM Lcvette[m]: as turboss mentioned above maybe the iso is bugged
05:23 PM Lcvette[m]: JT-Shop: 😲
05:23 PM Lcvette[m]: dunno what that is
05:23 PM Lcvette[m]: i have the iso image here i can check it
05:25 PM Lcvette[m]: TurBoss: you checked it?
05:25 PM TurBoss: nope
05:25 PM Lcvette[m]: or no?>
05:25 PM Lcvette[m]: /o\
05:25 PM Lcvette[m]: lol
05:26 PM XXCoder: id check hash of download yeah
05:26 PM Lcvette[m]: XXCoder: never done before is there a write up somewhere?
05:26 PM XXCoder: i wish that all downloads thats critical like drivers or OS iso files would have hash somewhere
05:26 PM TurBoss: https://cdimage.debian.org/images/unofficial/non-free/images-including-firmware/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd/
05:26 PM XXCoder: problem you need hash from source too to compare
05:27 PM TurBoss: from here ^^
05:27 PM TurBoss: Lcvette: https://www.debian.org/CD/verify
05:27 PM Lcvette[m]: i don't know what that means
05:28 PM XXCoder: https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/check-sha1-hash-cheksum-on-linux-freebsd-and-unix/
05:28 PM XXCoder: here is basic summary of what it is
05:32 PM Lcvette[m]: XXCoder: can i test it from a windows PC?
05:32 PM XXCoder: there is windows programs for that yeah
05:32 PM XXCoder: I remember having one but it was over decade ago
05:33 PM XXCoder: look at iso file see what type of hash it has, then look up window app for that kind of has. theres probably one that can do many hash types
