12:29 AM mrec_: is there also a noticeable big inflation in the U.S.? I just compared some prices in Berlin ... fried meat 10.90 a few years ago vs 17.90 now
12:39 AM mrec_: that's heavy..
01:21 AM roycroft: uri tuchmann has a new video out
01:21 AM roycroft: he broke his right hand, but he's still machining
01:25 AM XXCoder: watched one' lol interesting
02:18 AM randy: morning
02:27 AM Deejay: moin
02:43 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning
03:02 AM travis_farmer[m]: for some reason my math seems broken... if i have a ballscrew with a pitch of 5mm, what does that translate to in inches (revolutions per inch)
03:03 AM XXCoder: one rotation is 5 mm i think
03:03 AM XXCoder: you do conversion of units im too tired lol
03:05 AM sensille: 25.4/5
03:15 AM travis_farmer[m]: i currently have a STEP_SCALE of 8128, but when i calculate what it should be, i get 314.96062992125984251968503937008. 200 full steps per revolution, either 1/8 or 1/16 microstepping (can't remember off the top of my head), 1:1 drive ratio, and a screw pitch of 0.1968503937007874015748031496063 (seems wrong)
03:16 AM XXCoder: its why I kept my machine metric
03:16 AM XXCoder: no conversions needed
03:17 AM travis_farmer[m]: i will have to check the machine itself and see if it is accurate after a bit of travel. i know i corrected once, but i think i lost the number
03:17 AM XXCoder: honestly I dont see need to make machine imperial when screws etc is metric
03:17 AM XXCoder: you can just use g20 then use imperial units in gcode
03:17 AM XXCoder: or g21. forgot which is metric and which is imperial
03:18 AM travis_farmer[m]: Hmm, true
03:18 AM travis_farmer[m]: i would have to re-do my soft limits, but it could be done
03:25 AM XXCoder: yeah
03:40 AM rmu: 5mm pitch ball screw amounts to 5.1 rotations per inch
03:41 AM rmu: 5,08 ;-)
03:41 AM rmu: 5,08 rotations is 1016 full steps
03:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: oh sure, now you chime in. i have mostly converted my INI from inches to mm ;-)
03:42 AM rmu: keep it in mm
03:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: i will, now
03:43 AM rmu: nicer numbers with metric ball screw
03:44 AM travis_farmer[m]: yup, but a PITA to convert every number to metric ;-)
03:58 AM travis_farmer[m]: there, INI is converted... all that is left is to run it and see what happens (when it is light enough outside)
04:07 AM travis_farmer[m]: fortunately, i keep my configs on GitHub, so if my calculations were wrong, i can always look back at the previous commits :-)
04:14 AM randy: travis_farmer[m]: only AD. not in my flat :)
04:14 AM travis_farmer[m]: oh, lol
04:14 AM randy: well, at least not yet
04:30 AM Tom_L: morning
04:48 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:59 AM Tom_L: 12°F hi 22°F much of the same tomorrow
07:02 AM travis_farmer[m]: 24F with a high of 30F, coldest day will be Friday into Saturday, at several degrees below 0F, minus wind-chill (-30F, estimate)
07:17 AM JT-Cave: A chance of freezing rain and sleet before 2pm, then a chance of sleet between 2pm and 4pm, then a chance of freezing rain and sleet after 4pm.
07:17 AM JT-Cave: wonderful day to stay home
07:18 AM Tom_L: lock yourself in the woodshop :)
07:20 AM * travis_farmer[m] waits for the mail delivery, to bring the air-line adaptor he needs...
07:34 AM JT-Cave: gotta start some fires first :)
07:59 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe1I8E21ha4
08:38 AM travis_farmer[m]: converted my machine from inches, to mm, as that is what my leadscrews are in for pitch. changed the settings in my INI to be in mm, and my machine is way off now. it moves way too slow, and an inch (when i G20) is about 1.5 inches...
08:39 AM travis_farmer[m]: suggests my STEP_SCALE is off...
08:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: STEP_SCALE was 8128 and i converted it to 320
08:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: BRB, mail came...
08:49 AM JT-Woodshop: Tom_L, I missed that pdf diagram... it looks complete
09:50 AM travis_farmer[m]: there, i have air power on the ATC spindle... it doesn't move as fast as i had expected...
09:55 AM Tom_L: JT-Woodshop, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/configs/orient_test/Orient_diagram.pdf
09:56 AM Tom_L: those are the differences i've found on mine so far
09:56 AM Tom_L: nothing really sticks out that would cause it not to work
09:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: odd, i can jog at normal speed, but a commanded move, like "G0 ..." is so slooooow
10:03 AM travis_farmer[m]: SOLVED: forgot to set velocity in [TRAJ]
10:04 AM Tom_L: JT-Woodshop, i dunno what he's doing with the xor & and gates on the right
10:04 AM Tom_L: (top)
10:04 AM Tom_L: s/xor/not
10:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: now it is time to go in for lunch...
10:18 AM travis_farmer[m]: one thing i confirmed with my spindle, it does in fact retain the tool holder when air is lost, so roycroft can stop building his lead wall ;-)
10:20 AM travis_farmer[m]: as slow as the pneumatic piston moves, it acts like it needs a drop or two of pneumatic tool oil, but i can't as the manual says no oil. so it will just have to remain slow. perhaps it will speed up a bit once it is worn-in a bit.
10:21 AM Tom_L: or thawed out
10:21 AM travis_farmer[m]: that could be too...
10:21 AM travis_farmer[m]: it was 58F in the shop, but the spindle core was likely still cold
10:23 AM travis_farmer[m]: when the air is added, it takes a good 2 seconds for the tool-holder to release.
10:26 AM travis_farmer[m]: upper PSI level is about 95psi (6.5bar). i had to go up to 100psi to get enough action out of the spindle to take in the tool holder.
10:27 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Might be an air over hydraulic internally. Also might be the grease on the belleville washers being sticky until warm. If not air over hydraulic it will be a multi stage air cylinder to get enough force. Should be at lest 500kg to compress the spring stack.
10:28 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:30 AM travis_farmer[m]: my gauge doesn't read in kg ;-)
10:30 AM Tom_L: those springs are fairly hefty
10:30 AM Tom_L: as they need/should be
10:31 AM travis_farmer[m]: how much PSI do you think the safe limit is? i mean, if it lists 95psi but takes 100 to release the tool...
10:32 AM Tom_L: maybe those are chinese psi
10:32 AM CloudEvil_: Then it'
10:32 AM CloudEvil_: Then it's faulty
10:32 AM travis_farmer[m]: or should i just run the spindle for a bit to warm it up?
10:32 AM CloudEvil_: If it does not release at the listed pressure, either it is flat out broken, misdesigned, or your pressure guage is wrong
10:33 AM CloudEvil_: For #1 and #2 the correct response is return.
10:33 AM Tom_L: i'd test it at room temp
10:33 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: The max air pressure should be specified.
10:33 AM travis_farmer[m]: i wonder if a packing styrofoam pellet got in the air passage
10:34 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I didn't look too close at the last orient but if you don't have a servo spindle you need to do some other trickery
10:34 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I do some other trickery to get my spindle to orient 🙂
10:34 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, yeah i realized that
10:34 AM Tom_L: the pwmgen gets enabled for the analog out
10:35 AM Tom_L: but i'm not sure that's happening
10:35 AM Tom_L: i know the spindle isn't coming on
10:35 AM Tom_L: it will be a warm spring day before i find out :)
10:35 AM JT-Cave: set up the pins in a watch window
10:35 AM roycroft: if the spindle is cold you could be getting air leaking past some o-rings
10:36 AM Tom_L: i will
10:36 AM Tom_L: i had a few set up already for the initial index then the orient
10:36 AM travis_farmer[m]: i hope that is all it is roycroft
10:36 AM roycroft: this is pneumatic, isn't it?
10:36 AM travis_farmer[m]: mine? yes
10:37 AM roycroft: did you add a couple drops of pneumatic tool oil to the air inlet?
10:37 AM JT-Cave: I started a sim in the shop, can't run lcnc here until opengl is fixed
10:37 AM travis_farmer[m]: roycroft: the manual says no oil
10:37 AM roycroft: oh
10:37 AM roycroft: that's interesting
10:37 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Oqihu1sRmYU
10:37 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XAoWTIGswPk
10:37 AM Tom_L: i did a video so you can see the changes
10:37 AM roycroft: i would follow the manual before listening to me
10:38 AM JT-Cave: too much changing at one time
10:38 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, at first i wasn't quite sure what all pins to watch
10:38 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, i think i just need to warm it up for a better test
10:38 AM Tom_L: i did that so i can pause and see the changes
10:39 AM Tom_L: i haven't been back on it for a few days
10:41 AM Tom_L: i wished ut didn't make it a short so it'd be easier to see
10:42 AM JT-Cave: run it through flowblade and make it slow motion
10:43 AM Tom_L: a linux program?
10:43 AM * JT-Cave heads to town before the ice age starts
10:43 AM Tom_L: heh
10:43 AM JT-Cave: yes, it's in debian
10:43 AM Tom_L: it may be a bit... it's cold out there
10:43 AM JT-Cave: it's what I use to edit videos like the one I linked this morning
10:44 AM Tom_L: missed that one
10:44 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe1I8E21ha4
10:47 AM jpa-: travis_farmer[m]: did you open the relief air valve screw on the side of the spindle?
10:47 AM jpa-: hmm
10:48 AM jpa-: or maybe it was different model
10:48 AM travis_farmer[m]: i don't think it has one
10:48 AM jpa-: https://www.ebay.com/itm/385203083407 yeah, i was looking at this one but looking more closer the "open when loose the tool" is something else
10:49 AM jpa-: the spec is not exactly clear on what the 6 bar pressure is
10:49 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, it loses a little on the translation
10:50 AM jpa-: some spindles specify separately "typical value where tool is released" and "absolute maximum pressure"
10:52 AM * travis_farmer[m] uploaded an image: (283KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/VhKdABtQzoasOznlHJAXgAfD/Screenshot%202022-12-30%20at%2004-01-39%20%E3%80%90US%E3%80%91CNC%204.5KW%20BT30%20ATC%20Air%20Cooled%20Spindle%20Motor%20220V%20Kit%205.5KW%20FL%20Inverter%20vfd%20eBay.png >
10:53 AM jpa-: so do you have two lines to the tool release cylinder being driven, or just one?
10:55 AM travis_farmer[m]: i have all 3 lines connected. the lower connection to free-flowing 10psi air, and the release and lock air driven by a 5way 2 position air solenoid
10:56 AM travis_farmer[m]: maybe my regulator gauge is wrong... it is possible
10:56 AM jpa-: does the air solenoid connect the opposite of release/lock connections to atmosphere? so that the air can flow out from the opposite side of the cylinder
10:56 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: The lock is open to atmosphere when releasing the tool, correct?
10:57 AM travis_farmer[m]: yes to both
10:58 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I would try connecting the air to the release port without the valve to make sure.
10:58 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Nothing connected to the lock port.
10:58 AM travis_farmer[m]: ok, i will try that after lunch
10:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: the valve sounds like it is releasing ok, but it could be faulty
11:01 AM travis_farmer[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/371753950545 is my valve
11:02 AM travis_farmer[m]: just a theory, if the solenoid is not acting in a full throw for some reason, i would think it would cause just this sort of issue.
11:07 AM travis_farmer[m]: what do you suppose the little red button on the wide black band does?
11:09 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Test button. Manually actuates the valve.
11:09 AM travis_farmer[m]: oh, ok
11:13 AM CloudEvil_ is now known as CloudEvil
11:14 AM jpa-: https://us-en.airtac.com/upload/4V200-201909160942009636.PDF is the manual for the valve
11:20 AM jpa-: for the pilot system to work correctly, it is also important that the ports are connected correctly: P is pressure inlet, A and B are the outputs and R and S are the release ports (connected to atmosphere)
11:21 AM travis_farmer[m]: yes
11:34 AM travis_farmer[m]: suppose it has anything to do with the release air is on a 6mm diameter tube, and the other end is only 4mm?
11:35 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Doubt it. The smaller lock port is probably because it is single stage where the unlock is multistage. Unlock needs more air.
11:35 AM travis_farmer[m]: ok, makes sense
12:21 PM travis_farmer[m]: back out in the shop... i connected the unlock air directly to the air source with no change in release time. currently running spindle to warm it up a little.
01:08 PM travis_farmer[m]: hey, good news: it was in question if the sensors in the spindle worked, and they do. one is active high when a tool is locked in, and the other one follows the lock/unlock piston position.
01:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: jpa-: more favorites from the spindle specs "2. Do not use any tools tapping spindle;"
01:08 PM travis_farmer[m]: that on my spindle? if so, i remember seeing that :-)
01:10 PM travis_farmer[m]: i am getting a slight, but high-pitched whistle from my air solenoid, i think it has a tiny o-ring leak...
01:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well it is sold by 'kuku"
01:12 PM travis_farmer[m]: LMAO
01:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well at least it's not a kaka
01:12 PM travis_farmer[m]: the directions are ;-)
01:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "5. Untrained personnel can not disassemble and operate electric spindle; "
01:15 PM travis_farmer[m]: is that me? ;-)
01:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well it's right there in #5
01:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you have been warned
01:17 PM * travis_farmer[m] calls it a day (of success), and heads inside
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: travis_farmer: I have across similar issues with solenoid valves of the type you are using
01:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they had Festo labels but they are likely cheap copies
01:21 PM * roycroft thinks he remembered the old warning sign fairly accurately
01:23 PM travis_farmer[m]: figures, i probably got a cheap copy...
01:26 PM travis_farmer[m]: lol, roycroft. i don't speak German, but luckily Google does ;-)
01:41 PM travis_farmer[m]: Hmm, thought i could save a little time grabbing the tool change code from Funkenjaeger's GitHub... not exactly the same signaling system, but i think i can make use of a good chunk of it. (hope he doesn't mind me grabbing it) :-)
01:44 PM sensille: that is ... not german. maybe with a good portion of netherlands and english?
01:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sensille: it's an old joke sign, mocking the Germans
01:46 PM * sensille feels mocked
01:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blinkenlights goes back ti the mid- 1950's
01:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: when Germany was still thought of as a defeated nation and suitable for mocking
01:52 PM sensille: oh, it still is suitable for mocking
01:53 PM XXCoder: JT-Cave: nice fixture
01:54 PM roycroft: it's milwaukee deutsch
01:55 PM XXCoder: 3 words didnt translate blowenfuzen with poppencorken and spitzsparken.
01:55 PM roycroft: blowing fuses, popping corks, and flying sparks
01:55 PM XXCoder: ahh ok
01:56 PM XXCoder: heyy oxtoolco finally does some shop stuff. though still "meatloaf night"
02:00 PM XXCoder: 15:20 interesting. making handle by tape but has spirl pattern for gripping
02:00 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/owDaI8F--aw?t=920
02:07 PM unterhaus: there is a german language question in the "general linuxcnc" forum
02:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfFxoyxQAh4
02:08 PM unterhaus: seems like moving it to the Deutch forum might be in order
02:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: don't send Basil!
02:12 PM unterhaus: je souhaite que les gens n'ecrirait pas en anglais dans le forum français
02:16 PM XXCoder: bah guy dont actually do maching work, mostly only discussion but hey it was before than just talk before
02:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: it's an old hockey stick trick
02:18 PM XXCoder: interesting
02:18 PM roycroft: don't talk about the war!
02:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: you started it!
02:24 PM roycroft: no we didn't! you invaded poland!
02:26 PM roycroft: i suppose a link is in order here, for the folks who think we're crazy (for other than the usual reasons)
02:27 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tms0yk9kqVM
02:27 PM roycroft: there, that one should do nicely
02:43 PM Tom_L: think? pretty sure that's been established :)
02:46 PM roycroft: i said (other than for the usual reasons)
02:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the bots don't always do their job bridging
03:07 PM unterhaus: when the bots take over, nothing will work right and nobody will be able to fix it
03:16 PM travis_farmer[m]: one thing i noticed when i was hand-mounting a tool-holder into my spindle.... i really need to raise the spindle up on the Z-axis, or move the whole Z-axis up. the tool holder with a tool in the collet (about 1" stickout), would not clear the base table, never mind if there was a spoilboard on it. i think i will have to have somebody mill out a lift plate for me... once i get the exact specs.
03:18 PM roycroft: how bizarre
03:19 PM roycroft: one of my favorite symphonies, which has been rarely recorded, rarely performed, and rarely aired, is being played right now for the third time since the weekend, on three different stations that i happened to listen to
03:20 PM roycroft: this is neither an anniversary of a significant event of the work or of the composer
03:20 PM roycroft: maybe it's finally getting popular ;)
03:38 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (305KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/iDzBdaLbEEaXeGGsBarlEmCb/20230130_153708.jpg >
03:38 PM JT-Woodshop: I need a better way to draw the circles, the sharpie is not sharp now
03:38 PM travis_farmer[m]: good idea, using the tailstock!
03:40 PM roycroft: maybe a rollerball pen?
03:40 PM roycroft: you'd have to hold it vertically though
03:43 PM JT-Woodshop: that would be hard to do in the lathe...
03:43 PM Rab: Inkjet!
03:44 PM JT-Woodshop: not my original idea, just a version of an existing idea
03:45 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (317KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/NpoHpNigHRXtWgYNjYMcXHJt/20230130_154403.jpg >
03:46 PM travis_farmer[m]: like docking a spacecraft to the mothership ;-)
03:49 PM roycroft: maybe mount an airbrush in the toolpost
03:50 PM roycroft: that new video from uri tuchmann is interesting
03:50 PM roycroft: he's making little wooden people to go in a toy train set
03:50 PM roycroft: for his 2-year-old
03:50 PM roycroft: he is turning them on the metal lathe
03:51 PM roycroft: and when he finished turning them he mounted a paint brush in the tool post and painted them on the lathe
03:51 PM roycroft: i guess since he's right-handed and his right hand is broken that's probably the only way to paint accurately
03:53 PM unterhaus: is the raised part on the face of a nema 23 motor not standardized?
03:53 PM Rab: Feeling some angst about the sawdust on the machine.
03:56 PM Rab: unterhaus, in diameter or depth?
03:56 PM unterhaus: either
03:56 PM Rab: Skimming a random sampler of datasheets, 1.5 in diameter seems typical.
03:56 PM unterhaus: yeah, I think that's right
03:57 PM JT-Woodshop: I might just cut some tiny grooves in it...
03:57 PM unterhaus: I just did an image search and those dimensions were missing from almost all of them
03:57 PM roycroft: yes, typical, but i'm not sure it's a standard
03:57 PM Rab: And .063 in depth (protrusion?).
03:59 PM Rab: I see one datasheet specifying 0.06 in (1.5 mm)...wonder if mfgs fudge the dimensions for e.g. 38 by 1.5 mm.
04:01 PM Tom_L: JT-Woodshop, use a pencil?
04:01 PM unterhaus: .06 is pretty common from what I see
04:01 PM JT-Woodshop: I wonder how well that would work?
04:01 PM unterhaus: maybe a carpenter's pencil so it wouldn't break so easily
04:02 PM Tom_L: carpenters use them on a daily basis :)
04:02 PM Rab: http://www.cncitalia.net/file/pdf/nemastandard.pdf
04:02 PM JT-Woodshop: pencil works, just have to have the sharpener near to keep the tip sharp
04:03 PM JT-Woodshop: I use carpenter pencil at the drum sander...
04:03 PM Rab: 1.5 in OD, 0.06-0.13 depth. I guess the depth isn't tightly controlled because it doesn't locate anything; the OD is more critical.
04:03 PM JT-Woodshop: can you clean sharpie off?
04:03 PM Tom_L: alcohol probably
04:04 PM Tom_L: unless it's on wood then that could be a problem
04:04 PM JT-Woodshop: the board is easy to make a new one
04:04 PM JT-Woodshop: some kind of laminate called reversible boards
04:04 PM Tom_L: or use the backside
04:04 PM JT-Woodshop: back side has a pattern on it
04:05 PM Tom_L: if it's laminate alcohol should work
04:05 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (410KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/lMtsudaprVudbfixfgLILWYK/20230130_160503_2434842129190296668.jpg >
04:06 PM JT-Woodshop: I think it's as thin as paper...
04:06 PM Tom_L: try a small spot
04:08 PM Tom_L: should come right off
04:17 PM JT-Woodshop: I'll try it tomorrow after I pull the centering jig off the bowl
04:19 PM unterhaus: the motor I'm working with seems to have .0625 depth, but I was measuring with a caliper
04:19 PM unterhaus: OTOH, I measured it many times
04:24 PM Tom_L: ink pen may also work
04:24 PM Tom_L: would be finer
04:24 PM Tom_L: just don't use your good one
04:29 PM roycroft: use a "space pen"
04:29 PM roycroft: those are designed to use in weightless conditions and can work upside down and sideways
04:30 PM JT-Woodshop: yep my uni-ball won't work
04:31 PM * JT-Woodshop should go and clean the machine shop some
04:35 PM JT-Woodshop: we are right on the edge of the heavy winter mix
04:35 PM XXCoder: is that how you align rings?
04:35 PM JT-Woodshop: now it is :)
04:36 PM JT-Woodshop: I needed to make it for the dizzy bowl
04:37 PM roycroft: it's up to 3 degrees here
04:38 PM roycroft: and it looks like it might only get down to -5 tonight
04:38 PM roycroft: the rain will return by friday, and we'll be back to seasonal temperatures then
04:38 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:39 PM * roycroft is ready for spring, and hopes february is somewhat mild
04:40 PM XXCoder: so you basically center ring, then you lightly press it and I guess rotate to fit?
04:40 PM XXCoder: so it all lines up
04:40 PM JT-Woodshop: yes I tape the next ring to the jig in the center then apply glue and rotate a bit then align
04:41 PM XXCoder: nice
04:41 PM JT-Woodshop: the last ring was off a tad from center but no one but could tell
04:41 PM JT-Woodshop: no one but me could tell
04:43 PM unterhaus: I'm pretty sure I saw a 3dconnexion space mouse in another movie last night, "Jung_E"
04:43 PM XXCoder: lol
04:46 PM unterhaus: the sensor everyone uses for dust collectors is available on ebay for $25, free shipping
04:46 PM unterhaus: BANNER QS18VP6D
04:47 PM JT-Woodshop: used?
04:47 PM unterhaus: new
04:47 PM JT-Woodshop: that's pretty cheap for any sensor from banner
04:47 PM unterhaus: https://www.ebay.com/itm/254259411065
04:47 PM unterhaus: I'm sure it's surplus
04:48 PM unterhaus: it wouldn't surprise me if it cost $100 or more
04:49 PM JT-Woodshop: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/banner-engineering-corporation/QS18VP6D/10651402
04:50 PM JT-Woodshop: doesn't seem to be a good thing to use a photo anything inside a dust bin
04:50 PM Tom_L: 19F but no precip
04:51 PM JT-Woodshop: light sleet here
04:51 PM XXCoder: can always use led lighting inside, have sensor just below top fill level
04:51 PM JT-Woodshop: it's north of us atm
04:51 PM XXCoder: clean it each time it stops
04:51 PM JT-Woodshop: dust covers everything and you can't see...
04:51 PM unterhaus: people got the idea from oneida
04:51 PM JT-Woodshop: optical in dusty is not a good thing
04:51 PM unterhaus: that's what they use
04:52 PM XXCoder: honestly I like that robert design better
04:52 PM XXCoder: just strip of window in door
04:52 PM unterhaus: well, if I ever finished setting mine up I could tell you
04:52 PM XXCoder: you can directly see fill level with led light inside.
04:52 PM XXCoder: think I got name wrong
04:52 PM unterhaus: two windows and a light outside is probably the best idea
04:52 PM JT-Woodshop: I've always used ultrasonic sensors for hoppers
04:53 PM unterhaus: light in the back. Light goes away and it's full
04:53 PM JT-Woodshop: dust covers sensor light goes away...
04:54 PM Tom_L: i hacked a polaroid ultrasonic sensor once
04:54 PM unterhaus: you're going to make me set it up. I already have the sensor mounted in the drum
04:54 PM Tom_L: they're range is ~25'
04:55 PM unterhaus: I had a whole network of ultrasonic sensors set up in our lab, couldn't see rubber tires or fleece jackets
04:55 PM Tom_L: you had to use ~1kuf cap on them or when it would pin it reset the uC
04:55 PM unterhaus: plus the noise was really annoying
04:56 PM Tom_L: pin/ping
04:56 PM XXCoder: yeop name is frank howarth
04:56 PM unterhaus: it's funny how many different kinds of sensors can't see rubber tires
04:56 PM unterhaus: we had a couple of laser scanners that just drew blank
04:58 PM unterhaus: ebay now has a button that says, "buy another" if you already bought an item
04:58 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/mcGSjSMHxIg wow old video, and his shop looks very different.
04:58 PM XXCoder: predates his fancy drawer system and varuous upgrades
04:58 PM * JT-Woodshop calls it a night
04:59 PM XXCoder: anyway thats his dust system, though im oretty sure he upgraded it also later on
05:00 PM unterhaus: I have to redo mine again. I thought I had it mounted so the drum was easy to get out, but it isn't
05:00 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/wx2m2RELDz8 he makes dust balls. it shows his dust collection again
05:03 PM XXCoder: anyway yeah id probably make something similiar. though id add lighting on top of box so I can more easily see fill line
05:04 PM unterhaus: I'd get one of those banner sensors
05:04 PM unterhaus: oh wait, I already did
05:06 PM XXCoder: honestly as he says he needs to empty it once each month to 4 months
05:06 PM XXCoder: it dont exactly fill fast, if you set any kind of cleanign schedule it'll do fine
05:06 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:07 PM JT-Cave: depends on what your doing... when I'm milling lumber I empty mine every couple of hours
05:07 PM XXCoder: thats true
05:07 PM JT-Cave: a few times I got it too full lol
05:08 PM unterhaus: last time I emptied mine, I had to empty the entire cyclone
05:08 PM unterhaus: I was wondering why it wasn't pulling very well
05:08 PM JT-Cave: taking raw slabs you joint two edges then plane to thickness
05:08 PM JT-Cave: so lots of chips
05:09 PM XXCoder: wonder if you could have multistage
05:09 PM XXCoder: rough and fine
05:09 PM unterhaus: yeah, when I get going it fills up fast
05:09 PM unterhaus: cyclone is multi stage
05:10 PM unterhaus: I have a big filter on the output and the fines go in a home depot bucket
05:11 PM JT-Cave: I have one of those double bag cyclone jobbys
05:11 PM unterhaus: I switched it around after filling it up, there hasn't been much fine dust in the bucket
05:12 PM unterhaus: it was one of those oneidas they sold before they figured out how to make a cyclone from Bill Pence
05:13 PM unterhaus: lots of money for a horrible design, fortunately I bought it used for not much
05:13 PM JT-Cave: https://www.harborfreight.com/2-hp-industrial-5-micron-dust-collector-97869.html
05:13 PM JT-Cave: mine is similar to that one
05:14 PM XXCoder: interesting
05:14 PM JT-Cave: https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-1-1-2-hp-portable-dust-collector/g1028z2
05:14 PM JT-Cave: that's it but mine is not branded grissly
05:14 PM JT-Cave: grizzly
05:14 PM JT-Cave: and the bottom bag is not clear
05:19 PM XXCoder: jt honestly if you build prestage to get rid of larger peices, it would take ages to fill the bottom bag
05:19 PM XXCoder: and with only larger peices, you could make ummm billet? creator from woodgears
05:22 PM roycroft: the hf dust collector is actualy pretty crappy
05:22 PM roycroft: the impeller is small and poorly designed
05:22 PM XXCoder: dammit I cant remember what those fire sticks is called
05:24 PM XXCoder: anyway guy made automated way to make it. just put chips in bin and turn it on, it turns chips into sticks ready to put in fire
05:25 PM XXCoder: found it! https://woodgears.ca/reader/alois/press.html
05:27 PM XXCoder: so yeah log spiitter into nirqette press
05:27 PM XXCoder: *birqette
05:32 PM XXCoder: jt that thing may be best for you if you want more wood to burn during winters
05:32 PM XXCoder: I know your area gets a lot more cold than here
05:37 PM mits[m]: Do they make these for outside installation but still smallish footprint?
05:38 PM mits[m]: should probably just buy one and make my own enclosure
05:41 PM unterhaus: when I had a dual bag unit, I used to run the air through a garbage can first.
05:41 PM unterhaus: no fancy separators or anything, and it got most of the big chips
05:41 PM unterhaus: I spent too much time messing with separators and in the meantime started using it and it worked so well I never changed it before I sold it
05:42 PM unterhaus: what's the easiest way to convert a webp file?
05:42 PM JT-Cave: gimp
05:43 PM XXCoder: webp seem to be tajking browsers in a storm
05:43 PM XXCoder: not sure why
05:43 PM unterhaus: it would be nice if imgur got with the program
05:43 PM unterhaus: webp is compressed better, otherwise I got no idea
05:43 PM XXCoder: seems compressed better animated, even over apng
05:44 PM XXCoder: https://mathiasbynens.be/demo/animated-webp
05:44 PM XXCoder: animated webp
05:45 PM unterhaus: this is what mine looks like, although not as nice. Imagine if it was put up by a lazy person https://imgur.com/TTMateY
05:46 PM unterhaus: everything would be easier if our basement ceilings were that high
05:49 PM JT-Cave: I had a dust deputy for the table saw... sold it with the dust vacuum thingy
05:50 PM JT-Cave: that came with my surface grinder
05:54 PM JT-Cave: sleet is pretty heavy now
06:03 PM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ga98wXN9JY
06:05 PM Tom_L: you must be getting pretty good at that by now
06:05 PM XXCoder: interesting
06:05 PM XXCoder: many dont bother to use wax to protect the strip
06:06 PM Tom_L: when i'm gluing i always use wax paper
06:06 PM Tom_L: where did you get the glue bottle?
06:07 PM Tom_L: i need to find some small ones i can fill
06:08 PM roycroft: that looks like the kind of bottle i get at the art supply store for fabric dyes for tie-dying
06:08 PM JT-Cave: amazon
06:09 PM Tom_L: i used to use tiny elmers bottles but i can't find the small ones anymore
06:09 PM JT-Cave: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B325ZSP1?
06:09 PM JT-Cave: 4oz
06:09 PM Tom_L: i have some with a needle in the top for liquids
06:10 PM JT-Cave: chicken soup time
06:10 PM Tom_L: finished enchiladas
06:11 PM roycroft: i have a board meeting tonight
06:11 PM roycroft: no time to cook
06:12 PM roycroft: but i have leftover pizza i can heat up
06:16 PM unterhaus: doesn't paypal still charge fees now if you give someone a refund?
06:29 PM roycroft: i don't know, but i would not be surprised
06:30 PM roycroft: eventually, paypal will try to start charging fees for not using paypal when paypal is an optin
06:30 PM roycroft: option
06:30 PM XXCoder: that'd probably be illegal
06:31 PM XXCoder: that ior credit cards would allc harge us when we use other card
06:31 PM XXCoder: or cash
06:32 PM roycroft: it all depends on how many congresscritters paypal buys
06:32 PM XXCoder: well if paypal does that I'll just close my accounr
06:33 PM XXCoder: same for cards
06:33 PM roycroft: there are stores that don't take cash already
06:33 PM roycroft: there are even some here that won't accept $20 bills
06:33 PM roycroft: not accepting $50 and $100 bills is fairly common
06:34 PM roycroft: and all that is perfectly legal, as long as it's posted before the point of sale
06:35 PM XXCoder: yeah, some stores is simply too small to give charges to those
06:35 PM XXCoder: or dont want to run out of smaller bills faster
06:36 PM roycroft: they're concerned about counterfeiting
06:36 PM roycroft: and robbery
06:36 PM roycroft: the latter is easily solved, though
06:36 PM XXCoder: true
06:37 PM roycroft: deposit large bills in a safe on a time lock as soon as they are received
06:46 PM roycroft: https://www.dharmatrading.com/tools/squeeze-bottles-yorker-spouts-and-caps.html?lnav=tools.html
06:46 PM roycroft: there are some tie dye squeeze bottles
07:10 PM Tom_L: thanks
07:15 PM unterhaus: apparently I have a toolholder for every one of my indexable lathe tools
07:51 PM roycroft: shirley has let the building, and has gone to joine laverne in that great brewery in the sky
07:52 PM unterhaus: lots of celebrity deaths recently
07:54 PM roycroft: no more schlamiels and schlimazels
07:54 PM roycroft: yes, it seems so
07:54 PM roycroft: it's the end of the boomer time
07:58 PM mits[m]: I'm trying to step through a file and getting (what seems to me) strange behavior. From 'stop' state if I hit 'next line' twice nothing happens, and then on the third press it highlights like this screenshot and the machine moves to a location that I'm not trying to request:

08:00 PM mits[m]: Here's the nc file for context
08:00 PM mits[m]: The question I really have here is, why does pressing 'next line' three times land me on line 32, which is not even the line being executed
08:05 PM mits[m]: I think I'm actually on line 15 or 16
08:07 PM mits[m]: huh, hitting it twice more lands me on line 15
08:16 PM roycroft: who would step through files with ease must the next line press times three, ere the end he'll ever see
08:18 PM * roycroft wonders if they are african or european lines

09:52 PM skunkworks[m]: took me a bit to remember that I had a 3d printer and could make a retaining sleeve..
09:52 PM XXCoder: 3d printed parts of vballscrew block?
09:53 PM Tom_L: ur just havin too much fun
09:53 PM skunkworks[m]: the green part? Is it green?
09:53 PM skunkworks[m]: color blind
09:53 PM Tom_L: it's not blue
09:53 PM Tom_L: it's not red
09:53 PM XXCoder: yeah it is
09:53 PM skunkworks[m]: I had to take the ball nut apart to grind the flat..
09:54 PM skunkworks[m]: put 2 more balls in that what it came with..
09:54 PM Tom_L: oh that's to hold the balls in place
09:54 PM XXCoder: transfer something I think its called
09:54 PM skunkworks[m]: right - so I can run the ball nut back on
09:54 PM skunkworks[m]: or off now
09:54 PM XXCoder: mgn has its version of that also
09:54 PM Tom_L: would be even more fun without it
09:55 PM skunkworks[m]: I have actually done it.. I loose a ball or 2 though
09:55 PM skunkworks[m]: which isn't that bad
09:55 PM Tom_L: not something i care to try
09:55 PM XXCoder: isnt there way to correct missing balls?
09:55 PM skunkworks[m]: it isn't as scary as I thought it would be 😉
09:55 PM skunkworks[m]: take it apart and try again?
09:57 PM Tom_L: is that for the cross slide?
09:57 PM Tom_L: lathe..
09:57 PM skunkworks[m]: yes
09:57 PM Tom_L: what are the 2 rings? wipers?
09:58 PM skunkworks[m]: I have 2 ball screw assemblys - this one feels better. Plus it is flangeless so I will gain another 1/4 inch
09:58 PM skunkworks[m]: yes
09:58 PM skunkworks[m]: wipers - the white things

09:58 PM Tom_L: right
09:59 PM XXCoder: interesting
09:59 PM Tom_L: those probably have to be turned just right too
09:59 PM XXCoder: keeps chips out and retains grease or oil?
09:59 PM Tom_L: helps
09:59 PM skunkworks[m]: a pick and a little grease - works quite well
09:59 PM skunkworks[m]: I think it is for keeping big things out..
10:00 PM skunkworks[m]: Doesn't seem the greatest seal
10:01 PM Tom_L: what holds the nut in place on a flangless one?
10:01 PM Tom_L: just a tight fit?
10:02 PM skunkworks[m]: I have not decided yet. It will either be a couple set screws in ground pockets - or some sort of end to end holding
10:03 PM * skunkworks[m] uploaded an image: (383KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/sLAWkfszmQxSByPXImxzFBca/rn_image_picker_lib_temp_9a022fa9-7438-4795-b799-c7a1d44f3752.jpg >
10:03 PM skunkworks[m]: very little room to work with
10:04 PM Tom_L: you'll eventually machine that part
10:04 PM skunkworks[m]: yes
10:04 PM XXCoder: retainer shouldnt be too hard
10:05 PM skunkworks[m]: it could be in a pocket and held with a couple screws..
10:07 PM skunkworks[m]: thinking of trying this to bore the hole.. because - why not 😉
10:07 PM skunkworks[m]: https://youtu.be/a7CO9gohaXE?t=84
10:07 PM XXCoder: oh yeah I remember that
10:08 PM XXCoder: that wwas cool
10:08 PM Tom_L: how do you control the fit on those cuts?
10:08 PM XXCoder: diameter of tool likely
10:08 PM skunkworks[m]: you tell it the 'radius' of the shape.
10:08 PM skunkworks[m]: so you can tweek it
10:09 PM XXCoder: I remember early version of it lol
10:09 PM skunkworks[m]: the tool diameter makes the shape correct
10:09 PM XXCoder: it wasnt precise yet, so hex was twisted and stuff
10:09 PM Tom_L: that'll take a while to machine
10:09 PM XXCoder: yeah but then no broaching or filing needed
10:09 PM skunkworks[m]: yes - but I can walk away from it
10:09 PM skunkworks[m]: probably
10:10 PM skunkworks[m]: right

10:10 PM Tom_L: i remember those

10:13 PM XXCoder: nice indeed
10:13 PM XXCoder: the period must be huge on that "bolt" lol
10:14 PM XXCoder: looking though videos, how was harmonic dribe 4th axis so far?
10:16 PM skunkworks[m]: I have not broke it yet.. But I also haven't played with it much
10:17 PM skunkworks[m]: I think it is a very viable way to make a 4th axis - I tried to break it with a torque wrench - it took 75ft-lbs and didn't break.
10:17 PM skunkworks[m]: it actually started back-driving it
10:19 PM skunkworks[m]: it still has the original petg gears in it.
