09:38 AM travis_farmer[m]: DOC ERROR: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.9/html/hal/components.html section 1.9, "comp" description is "Build, compile and install LinuxCNC HAL components." when the comp in question is a comparator comp
10:26 AM JT-Shop: this is where you report issues https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/issues
10:30 AM travis_farmer[m]: sorry
10:55 AM JT-Shop: nothing to be sorry about if you didn't know
11:44 AM roycroft: unless you are canadian
11:44 AM roycroft: in which case you are sorry about everything
12:49 PM * travis_farmer[m] is drooling, looking at the manual for a 7i73...
01:11 PM * Bleepshop peruses the 7i73 manual and then fails to find the reccomended 3I21or 3I22 on the Mesa website.
02:08 PM JT-Woodshop: In order to run any of the command line utilities a RS-422 adapter is needed. Mesa
02:08 PM JT-Woodshop: can provide a suitable adapter. Two such adapters are 3I21 or 3I22.
02:12 PM Tom_L: how's the bowl glueup coming?
02:12 PM JT-Woodshop: working on the next to last ring
02:13 PM XXCoder: awesome
02:13 PM JT-Woodshop: gotta make a centering fixture for the rings, got the last one off a tad
02:13 PM Tom_L: figure out how yet?
02:14 PM Tom_L: it will turn out ok.... pun intended
02:15 PM JT-Woodshop: yup, I have an idea to use the lathe and the tailstock
02:16 PM Tom_L: 14F now
02:17 PM JT-Woodshop: 41°F
02:17 PM * Tom_L decides not to venture out anymore today
02:17 PM travis_farmer[m]: 30F and snowing here
02:18 PM Tom_L: maybe after a nap i'll take a look at that last orient post with the diagram and compare
02:23 PM roycroft: it's sunny here today
02:23 PM roycroft: but that's not good - it means it's going to get really cold tonight
02:24 PM * roycroft is going to work on his pickup after lunch, while it's not raining
02:31 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight[m] the cheap 1kW servo kit arrived today. Well I have to go to the fedex place to pick it up, but I'm excited to see how good it is: https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/e6-series-1000w-ac-servo-motor-kit-3000rpm-3-18nm-17-bit-encoder-ip65-e6-rs1000h2a2-m17s
02:33 PM solarwind: They uploaded the full manual for it. Looks like it supports CAN as well. Can't believe I'm missing a CAN transceiver of all things
02:35 PM solarwind: They don't have any software to view the following error graphs to assist with tuning, but I should be able to rig something up to track that from the encoder output
02:38 PM * travis_farmer[m] has many expensive but great ideas for his machine... but needs to remind himself to keep the cost low, until the machine is making money...
02:46 PM roycroft: i have many great ideas for my machine too, but until i have the time to finish designing it, and then build it, none of them mean anything
02:51 PM CloudEvil: I have a pile of boxes, which is basically the same as a CNC machine.
02:52 PM roycroft: i was recently informed that amazon.com is actually the brainchild of a group of cats, who wanted to ensure that all cat homes always had a pile of boxes
02:52 PM XXCoder: that makes total sense
02:53 PM roycroft: i can't prove that that is true, but i know it's true
03:02 PM * JT-Woodshop smells smoke
03:07 PM travis_farmer[m]: everything alright, JT?
03:07 PM JT-Woodshop: it is on my end of the irc
03:31 PM _unreal_: snowing blaaa
03:31 PM _unreal_: its almost 80F outside right now and sunny
03:31 PM _unreal_: hell my daughter and I just cleaned the car :)
03:32 PM XXCoder: 80f on jan
03:32 PM XXCoder: you at OZ?
03:44 PM Loetmichel_: hey, i am writing isekai stories again. I have a little research problem: Anybody have an idea if one can make the coating of stick welding electrodes with medieval means?
03:47 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: The problem would be more the lack of steel for the rod and work piece. Steel was expensive when made with the pre-bessemer processes.
03:48 PM travis_farmer[m]: it was also terribly inconsistent, and that would be interesting to weld...
03:48 PM Loetmichel_: ZincBoy[CAON][m]: i (and the MC) knows how to make steel (bessmer needs pure oxygen, but there is an "airflow over molten iron" process that can be done easily)
03:49 PM Loetmichel_: so the steel isnt the problem, neither is the electricity. Mig welding though is a bid hard. ;)
03:49 PM Loetmichel_: (MC= main character)
03:49 PM Loetmichel_: s/bid/bit
03:50 PM Loetmichel_: bit hard because of getting inert gases... :)
03:55 PM CloudEvil: Loetmichel_: You can basically do it with crappy paper wrapped round the stick
03:55 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: A 6011/6010 cellulose rod might be do-able.
03:55 PM CloudEvil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulose_electrode This is very, very old tech
03:57 PM Loetmichel_: CloudEvil: so i heard. but doesnt that need rutil to work better, too?
03:57 PM rmu: Loetmichel_: some coatings are kind of paper, cellulose
03:57 PM CloudEvil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shielded_metal_arc_welding The exact composition of the welding electrode flux is very very flexible if you're OK with OK welds.
03:57 PM Loetmichel_: good enough to hold a steam engine boiler together, yes
03:58 PM Loetmichel_: <- isnt going to "invent" riveting to a "steam proof" state :)
03:59 PM XXCoder: emgione blondihack is making uses both solder and rivets to do that
03:59 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: FYI, the bessemer process does not require pure oxygen. Only air blown through melt.
04:00 PM Loetmichel_: yes, silver solder could work. but that would mean a blowtorch. not that easy either
04:00 PM XXCoder: oxy is pretty easy if has power, so are hyrogen, but need to somehow make pressured tanks of those
04:00 PM Loetmichel_: ZincBoy[CAON][m]: is that so? wasnt bessmer the one with blowing O2 through the molten iron=
04:00 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I hope boiler explosions are a plot point because with home-made steel and welding rods that is the likely result 🙂
04:00 PM Loetmichel_: ?
04:01 PM Loetmichel_: hey, thats what safety valves are for.
04:01 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, I'm in south florida
04:01 PM Loetmichel_: this isnt my first rodeo in that setting ;)
04:01 PM XXCoder: ok
04:01 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: No. That is a BOF (basic oxygen furnace). Bessemer is just air and why the steel back then was pretty crappy.
04:02 PM rmu: linz-donawitz process
04:02 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: If you have electricity then an electric arc furnace might be an option.
04:03 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Really cool to see one of those fire up. >6" cables jumping from the magnetic field.
04:03 PM CloudEvil: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/47943/maker-of-fire I recommend on the topic of isekai.
04:04 PM CloudEvil: Metallurgist protagonist. Though I think she only gets to forge welding
04:04 PM CloudEvil: Before plot happens
04:05 PM _unreal_: I got some more amazing BLDC servos
04:05 PM _unreal_: also got some with encoders
04:05 PM _unreal_: the motor controller that came with it. I'm kind of MEEEEEHHH THOUGH
04:05 PM _unreal_: I think I have to pull the parts from it and build custom boards to use the chips.
04:06 PM _unreal_: SLA5064/NCV33035DW
04:06 PM _unreal_: IT GOES TO SOME ??? ODD CONTROLLER but I cant find the chip :(
04:07 PM _unreal_: the control board has to many features on it to be useful with out knowing the working specs of it :(
04:07 PM _unreal_: the board also only has two encoder inputs going to the unknown chip.
04:07 PM Loetmichel_: CloudEvil: yeah, know that one. forge welding done RIGHT needs borax though
04:08 PM CloudEvil: Pretty sure borax was mentioned
04:09 PM _unreal_: the bldc motors I got also have onboard breaks
04:10 PM _unreal_: not sure what I want to do with them. but what I do want to do is get the motor controller setups moved to a custom PCB. would be wonderful to get it rigged upto a MCU that can take the encoder input. to drive them.
04:33 PM * JT-Woodshop listens to Traffic
04:34 PM roguish[m]: low spark of the high heel boys
04:34 PM JT-Woodshop: yup
04:34 PM roguish[m]: john barley corn
04:35 PM JT-Woodshop: got the window regulator changed on the C5... what next?
04:36 PM JT-Woodshop: Sunny Afternoon
04:38 PM roycroft: it's still sunny here, too
04:38 PM JT-Woodshop: nasty here... Kinks
04:39 PM roycroft: i just finished lunch and errands and round one of elections work
04:39 PM roycroft: so i'm going to go work on the pickup electrical stuff
04:39 PM roycroft: hopefully the truck will be running again today
04:39 PM JT-Woodshop: I need to start the last ring for the popcorn bowl
04:40 PM roycroft: and if the pickup work doesn't take too long i might get started on the mill dro today
04:41 PM JT-Woodshop: C'est La Vie
04:45 PM JT-Woodshop: Cliffs of Dover
04:48 PM JT-Woodshop: Coffee Homeground
04:53 PM JT-Woodshop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Nd7EZ3k39s
05:34 PM roguish[m]: gonna try some beer battered onion rings and hambugers tonigh...
06:09 PM Tom_L: JT-Woodshop, did you look at that last orient post? lost the link now... but
06:09 PM Tom_L: he had a schematic with his code...
06:13 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/24-hal-components/47991-orient?start=10#262834
06:15 PM Tom_L: it appears to me that: orient.enable, pid.enable, mux2.sel are all connected but are all inputs. trying to figure out what triggers them
06:17 PM Tom_L: on mine i have them connected to spindle.0.orient
06:18 PM Tom_L: or anyone intested in orient :)
06:19 PM Tom_L: interested*
07:13 PM roycroft: the pickup is back on the road
07:13 PM roycroft: it's nice when that work pays off
07:13 PM XXCoder: awesome
07:14 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i'll get much done on the dro today, but i'm going to at least tidy up the area around the mill so i can work there
07:14 PM roycroft: tidying up is progress :)
07:16 PM roycroft: i went on a bit of a test drive after getting the pickup working, and discovered there is snow on the ground just outside town
07:16 PM roycroft: i wasn't even driving in the foothills
07:27 PM Tom_L: what support does debian have for scanners?
07:27 PM Tom_L: scan -> pdf
07:28 PM Tom_L: i found something..
07:39 PM roycroft: my printer scans to tiff or pdf, so i don't know
07:39 PM roycroft: it's been years since i've had to do that
08:40 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, around?
08:40 PM _unreal_: no
08:41 PM Tom_L: you ever use the metro rail in miami?
08:41 PM _unreal_: not even once
08:41 PM _unreal_: but I dont live in that area
08:41 PM Tom_L: well you're closer than i am :)
08:41 PM _unreal_: I'm almost an hour north of miami and I work in fort lauderdale
08:41 PM Tom_L: ok nevermind then
08:41 PM _unreal_: I may be able to answer some quetions though
08:42 PM _unreal_: why are you interested in the rail?
08:42 PM Tom_L: just wondered if it may be a 'decent' way to get around
08:42 PM _unreal_: :S ehhhh yes/no its more low $ income people on them
08:43 PM Tom_L: just from the airport to the hotel
08:43 PM Tom_L: safe?
08:43 PM _unreal_: spanish haitian people
08:43 PM _unreal_: safe but I would NOT use rails at night
08:43 PM _unreal_: You'd be better with a CAB or uber
08:44 PM _unreal_: and there may be dedicated busses going from the miami air port to where your going anyways
08:44 PM _unreal_: anyone who is ignoring the border invasion is a FOOL. there are so many illegals pouring into the south its JUST SICK.
08:45 PM _unreal_: I work in the worlds largest marina in south florida. and several companies that were..... based in the marina got kicked out for [employing] illegals
08:48 PM _unreal_: the BS thats been going on in other states with riots etc.... stopped real quick when the current gov. of florida said DO IT... I FUCKING DARE YOU..... Now its just gang related bs or "normal"
08:51 PM XXCoder: this channel is for linuxcnc and machining
08:51 PM XXCoder: and woodshop stuff
08:51 PM Tom_L: oh pooo
08:52 PM Tom_L: you forgot the chickens..
08:52 PM XXCoder: oh yes
08:52 PM XXCoder: them rich people
08:52 PM XXCoder: all them eggs
08:52 PM Tom_L: yeah, what caused that anyway?
08:52 PM Tom_L: chickens go on strike?
08:52 PM XXCoder: avian flu
09:40 PM roycroft: i emailed a person whose ballot was returned undeliverable
09:40 PM roycroft: i just got a response
09:41 PM roycroft: "lol i signed up with the wrong address on accident. i've never even lived in that town, and i just made up the address."
09:41 PM * roycroft wonders how making something up is an "accident"
09:43 PM XXCoder: pretty questionable lol
09:59 PM roycroft: i've already been accused of being a "plant" to "rig" the removal election
10:00 PM roycroft: because i started training for this job two years before the removal petition was delivered, and a year before the director who is up for removal was even elected to the board
10:02 PM roycroft: it's like the folks who say that president obama's birth certificate is a fake, and the birth announcement published in the honolulu newspaper in 1961 was a "plant"
10:02 PM roycroft: somebody knew back then that he would run for president some day
10:28 PM roycroft: it's below freezing already
10:29 PM Tom_L: has been for quite a while sir
10:29 PM roycroft: not here, and it's rarely that cold this early in the evening
10:29 PM Tom_L: 15F here :)
10:29 PM roycroft: it might get almost that cold here overnight
10:30 PM Tom_L: i don't think it got out of the teens today
10:33 PM roycroft: we'll get above freezing every day
10:33 PM roycroft: it looks like below freezing temps at night until wednesday, and tonight will be the coldest
10:34 PM roycroft: i covered my baby bay laurel tree with a frost blanket
10:34 PM roycroft: i hope that helps keep it alive
11:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we get the polar express here the next few days
11:10 PM roycroft: that's what we're getting
11:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe -23 C tomorrow night, not too awful
11:10 PM roycroft: a noreaster from upper british columbia is heading down here
11:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: back to above freezing by Thursday I think
11:11 PM roycroft: it's going to get down to -7 here tonight
11:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is that unusual for your area?
11:11 PM roycroft: which is pretty darn cold for around here
11:11 PM roycroft: the record low for the day is -18
11:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or is that like a once a winter kind of thing
11:11 PM roycroft: this will be the coldest night this winter so far
11:12 PM roycroft: and will likely be the coldest night of the winter
11:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we got this cold a for a week around xmas
11:12 PM * roycroft remembers how cold it gets in chicago
11:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: hasn't been to bad
11:12 PM roycroft: one of the reasons i'm not there any more
11:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: few days of -10 C and then it's been above freezing for the most part
11:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: December and January rains vs snow
11:14 PM roycroft: it is almost spring
11:15 PM roycroft: imbolc is thursday
11:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's warmer in Nome, AK today than hre
