01:10 AM randy: morning
02:20 AM Deejay: moin
03:31 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning
03:39 AM rmu: does anybody know is it possible to somehow download a complete forum thread into one file. searching around in 40something pages drives me nuts
03:41 AM travis_farmer[m]: Hmmm, that would be a neat feature, if possible...
03:42 AM rmu: even better would be nntp interface ;)
03:43 AM travis_farmer[m]: i remember nntp... i had a server running on my webserver for a while... but now it won't let me in for some reason, LMAO
03:47 AM rmu: doesn't look like it https://www.kunena.org/forum/general-questions-and-how-tos/159629-is-there-a-way-to-export-or-save-threads-posts
04:47 AM Tom_L: morning
04:55 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:57 AM Tom_L: snow
04:57 AM travis_farmer[m]: snow here, starting a little after noon
06:00 AM travis_farmer[m]: Off-topic: i found a way to keep the Russian SPAM bots from registering on my forum, rather than a Captcha, it asks the question, "What is the Admin's middle name?" and i have had to clear out exactly zero SPAM accounts since then. ;-)
06:24 AM CloudEvil: How do legit users know it?
06:25 AM travis_farmer[m]: people that know me are the ones likely to join. therefore, they either know the answer, or can simply ask me the answer ;-)
06:28 AM travis_farmer[m]: besides, i get zero legit users anyway. i mostly use it as a blog anyway. :-)
08:23 AM travis_farmer[m4: got diesel in my heater tank, and heating up my shop 🙂 started snowing already...
09:40 AM travis_farmer[m]: need another set of eyes: my comp file to supply the map function (from Arduino) is here: https://github.com/travis-farmer/linuxcnc/blob/master/ard_map.comp and the way i have called it is here: https://github.com/travis-farmer/linuxcnc/blob/master/configs/my_LinuxCNC_router/my_LinuxCNC_router.hal (line 54). am i doing something wrong? hal meter shows the input value (line 75), but not the output value (line 76, always reads zero)
10:03 AM travis_farmer[m]: should my setp lines where i define the parameters of the map, the comp pins are floats, should i provide float values (like 100.00 vs 100)?
10:14 AM zephyr9900: travis_farmer[m] what does the map function do? I am not familiar with it. I don't think you don't need decimal points and zeros either way should work.
10:16 AM travis_farmer[m]: the VFD ModBus takes in a speed value in percent, so 0 to 100. the speed in RPM is 0 to 24000. so the function scales the value from 0 to 24000 to 0 to 100.
10:16 AM travis_farmer[m]: https://www.arduino.cc/reference/en/language/functions/math/map/
10:17 AM zephyr9900: Ah OK I am using the lincurve comp to do a similar thing. http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/man/man9/lincurve.9.html
10:23 AM travis_farmer[m]: may be irrelevant anyway, as mb2hal wasn't working with my VFD anyway. i had it working with direct analog control, so i may go back to that, as it just plain worked. would be nice to have a speed feedback from the spindle though. i thought the spindle had a Tach signal output, but apparently this specific model does not.
10:33 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah... i'm gonna change it back to analog control after lunch. i can't risk the spindle running away, just because the ModBus failed. it was setup temporary before, but i will work to make it solid, and reliable. only 4 wires control it. spindle enable (it is factory locked to go one direction), and the 0-10V wires. simple, but seems to be very effective.
10:37 AM roycroft: my new vinyl cutter is in albuquerque, which is odd, because it shipped from ohio
10:38 AM roycroft: it's in a brown truck
10:38 AM travis_farmer[m]: taking the scenic route?
10:38 AM roycroft: and i don't recall ups having a big regional distribution center in albuquerque
10:38 AM roycroft: maybe they're sending everything south because of the weather
10:39 AM travis_farmer[m]: as long as it brings you warmer weather when it comes ;-)
10:39 AM roycroft: it's going to get up to 16 today
10:39 AM roycroft: i'm not complaining aobut our weather
10:39 AM roycroft: it's going to be a shorts and birks day
10:40 AM roycroft: and we're forecast for <1mm of rain today, even
10:40 AM roycroft: the record high for the day is 17, so we'll get close to that
10:40 AM travis_farmer[m]: made it up to 20F here
10:41 AM roycroft: that's rather cool
10:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: cool? yeah, it is downright cold ;-)
11:22 AM unterhaus_: red cross things a very remote chance of winning super bowl tickets is going to get me to give blood
11:23 AM unterhaus_: I'm recovering from surgery, they aren't getting any blood for a while
11:25 AM roycroft: with me they'd have a better chance promising me that they won't give me tickets to the super bowl
11:26 AM travis_farmer[m]: lol
11:28 AM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus_: 🩸 get well soon 🎈🎈
11:29 AM unterhaus_: I'm recovering really well, but it just doesn't make sense to give blood until everything is fully healed
11:32 AM CaptHindsight[m]: the screening would likely keep you from donating anyway
11:33 AM CaptHindsight[m]: I would not feel bad about skipping a blood letting session until all your components are topped off
11:34 AM unterhaus_: I asked about that, they said it's not a problem for them. The worker said not to do it for a while because of my health
11:35 AM unterhaus_: I'm not sure I would go to the super bowl either. Who wants to go to Arizona?
11:38 AM CaptHindsight[m]: resell the tickets, probably worth something to the right people
11:39 AM roycroft: yeah, but that would be supporting and encouraging the spectacle
11:41 AM CaptHindsight[m]: literal blood money
11:52 AM * travis_farmer[m] wonders if he brought his soldering iron out to the shop, if the water soaked cleaning sponge would just freeze anyway...
11:52 AM * travis_farmer[m] heads out to shop to find out... :-)
11:55 AM CaptHindsight[m]: travis_farmer: heat the sponge with the iron if it does
01:16 PM Loetmichel: travis_farmer[m4: what water soaked sponge? Thats what i use my finger for. (cleaning the hot soldering iron tip i mean.) You'll just have to wipe the metal off faster than the nerves can register the heat ;)
01:17 PM Tom_L: sure that's not just lack of brain function?
01:18 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: pretty sure. also ~45 years of getting used to the heat. :)
01:25 PM travis_farmer[m]: rough day... after working out in the shop, i went upstairs to update the configs on the spare LCNC comp... motherboard just crapped out on me!!! it just plain wouldn't boot, not even the BIOS!?!?! that was a fairly expensive (used) motherboard!!!
01:29 PM travis_farmer[m]: just checked eBay, and i paid $350 for it... money well spent...
01:31 PM _discord_6366076 is now known as MrBean3701[m]
01:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Loetmichel: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/07/researchers-unpack-unkillable-uefi-rootkit-that-survives-os-reinstalls/ do you ever hear about how the military handles PC firmware over there?
01:41 PM Guest14: Guten Abend
01:43 PM Tom_L: hi
01:43 PM Tom_L: bye
01:44 PM travis_farmer[m]: huh?
01:45 PM XXCoder: someone entered and left on irc
01:45 PM travis_farmer[m]: oh... ok...
01:46 PM Tom_L: and back again
01:47 PM XXCoder: sy I guess
01:47 PM XXCoder: *shy
01:51 PM travis_farmer[m]: but, yeah... that will be the last motherboard i ever buy used...
01:55 PM travis_farmer[m]: i think i have an intel i5 board i could swap in to the case to run LCNC, but no idea what latency i would get from it. i don't remember it being great.
01:56 PM travis_farmer[m]: i wonder what i will do with the 8TB hard drive that was in the computer, with Win10 loaded on it...
02:11 PM Loetmichel: [20:38] <CaptHindsight[m]> Loetmichel: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/07/researchers-unpack-unkillable-uefi-rootkit-that-survives-os-reinstalls/ do you ever hear about how the military handles PC firmware over there? <- as they are still ordering Win10 an win11 even i doubt thats a concern for them either.
02:34 PM roguish[m]: Loetmichel: CaptHindsight check this site.. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/
03:52 PM Tom_L: so i'm wondering how i can fit it in the garage: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/Cincinnati_1.jpg
03:53 PM XXCoder: sure you can
03:53 PM XXCoder: first, place it
03:53 PM travis_farmer[m]: just buy it?
03:53 PM XXCoder: second: build garage around it
03:53 PM Tom_L: had to visit my kid's work today
03:53 PM XXCoder: garage fits!
03:53 PM Tom_L: dual gantry
03:53 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/Cincinnati_4.jpg
03:53 PM XXCoder: honestly I want to visit that shop lol
03:54 PM travis_farmer[m]: almost as big as mine... ;-)
03:54 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cincinnati/CCM.jpg
03:54 PM Tom_L: brand new cmm
03:54 PM XXCoder: dang thats 2 foot surface
03:54 PM XXCoder: what class is it?
03:54 PM Tom_L: good
03:54 PM Tom_L: i'm sure
03:54 PM Tom_L: :)
03:54 PM XXCoder: lol
03:55 PM XXCoder: I guess it would be A possible. doubtful its AA as its not in small room of its own
03:55 PM Tom_L: not small but a room of it's own @ 68F
03:55 PM XXCoder: yeah thats typical QA room temp
03:56 PM XXCoder: shop I used to work at had 7 A surfaces in 68f room. 4 of em being CMM
03:56 PM Tom_L: they were setting up another set of gantry rails
03:56 PM XXCoder: the groove is interesting
03:56 PM XXCoder: wonder wha they use it for
03:57 PM Tom_L: didn't ask
03:57 PM XXCoder: might be used for precision stuff storage
03:57 PM XXCoder: like 246 blocks
03:58 PM Tom_L: oh those blocks on the end are
03:58 PM Tom_L: probably just storage
03:58 PM Tom_L: here.. let's make a granite drawer
03:59 PM XXCoder: lol
04:00 PM Tom_L: he was telling me about the foundation for the rails.. like 20 truckloads of cement
04:00 PM XXCoder: yah I bet its bunch of feet deep too
04:00 PM Tom_L: 1" rebar
04:00 PM Tom_L: yup, i forgot what he said but it was deep
04:00 PM XXCoder: I remember when they first bought in huge cnc into shop, before that they cut a square in shop floor
04:01 PM XXCoder: it was 6 feet? deep
04:01 PM Tom_L: something like that
04:01 PM XXCoder: maybe it was 4? its quite a while ago
04:01 PM XXCoder: i heard ultimately its a failure
04:01 PM Tom_L: used a loader to put a backhoe down in the trench
04:01 PM XXCoder: cnc was just too shitty
04:02 PM Tom_L: these were at least 6'
04:02 PM XXCoder: yeah machine that big it would need more than cnc machine I menioned
04:22 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, on that long one, he spent 2 weeks skimming the plate
04:22 PM Tom_L: probed to find the low spot then skin cut it to that
04:29 PM XXCoder: dang
04:31 PM Tom_L: steel... think about the surface ares
04:31 PM Tom_L: area
04:31 PM XXCoder: how tight tol was he working to?
04:32 PM Tom_L: i don't know
04:32 PM Tom_L: i know prior to that they were just running roughing ops and passing the parts off to other machines
04:33 PM XXCoder: yeah id have done it like that if surface qualty was still not where I wanted it to be at
04:33 PM XXCoder: roughing with "skin" much greater than surface error would work just fine
04:33 PM Tom_L: i know what they're running on it so it must be pretty darn close
04:35 PM Tom_L: i saw the brand new starrag 6 axis
04:35 PM Tom_L: but it wasn't running anything at the time
04:35 PM XXCoder: brb a sec, though keep saying things as I can read it at discord anyway lol

04:56 PM roycroft: yay
04:56 PM roycroft: my calendars finally arrived
04:57 PM roycroft: now it can be 2023, and not december 31, 2022
05:06 PM CloudEvil: :)
05:08 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:31 PM XXCoder: roy nice
05:38 PM unterhausen: I wanted to buy something from japan, but the order page is in Japanese
05:40 PM unterhausen: seems like they only ship to japan
05:41 PM Tom_L: unterhausen, you should have picked china. they'll ship anywhere
05:42 PM XXCoder: japan shipping cost a bomb
05:43 PM unterhausen: shipping to japan costs a lot, I think shipping from japan isn't bad
05:44 PM unterhausen: they have 3 dealers in the U.S., so I'll have to wait until they get what I want
06:18 PM zephyr9900: is there a way to halscope or log hal signals when linuxcnc starts?
06:18 PM roguish[m]: zephyr9900: look for 'sampler'
06:30 PM Tom_L: zephyr9900, or run from a terminal
06:32 PM Tom_L: you'll get a list similar to this: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/configs/orient_error.txt
09:44 PM Tom_L: what signal triggers spindle.0.on?
09:50 PM Tom_L: would it be when lcnc receives an M3 M4 M19?
11:01 PM Plaid: Woot! First chips on my newly upgraded router! They look terrible!
11:18 PM unterhausen: I'm not sure I've ever worried about how my chips look, but congrats on making them
