12:00 AM roycroft: you mean huge tracts of land?
12:10 AM XXCoder: hah
12:10 AM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNaXdLWt17A
01:50 AM Deejay: moin
04:49 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:16 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning :-)
05:52 AM Tom_L: morning
06:00 AM travis_farmer[m]: so, for my machine and shop, i have been gifted by my father, a Dewalt DXCM271 (i think) compressor. it is an oil-less pump, so no oil in the air. though if i recall, it is a NOISY bastard. so i will likely have to build a sound box around it in order to keep my hearing. but that solves one of my issues (getting compressed air). i still need filters and water traps, and air line... but it should give me something to work with :-)
06:02 AM sensille: travis_farmer[m]: can it generate a high enough pressure? for the toolchanger i assume
06:04 AM travis_farmer[m]: the highest PSI the toolchange needs is around 83PSI. the compressor does 200 PSI though i will turn down the PSI switch a bit. it will supply 5.1 SCFM at 90 psi
09:25 AM roycroft: i wish my compressor was higher pressure
09:26 AM roycroft: i can push it to 140psi
09:26 AM roycroft: i don't need the extra pressure per se, but i could use the extra capacity so that it doesn't cycle as much, especially when i'm using my blasting cabinet
09:26 AM roycroft: 200psi would be nice
09:35 AM Tom_L: get a bigger tank
09:40 AM Tom_L: or a secondary one
09:41 AM travis_farmer[m]: old propane tanks work good, if you can get the valve out and the smell cleaned out
09:41 AM roycroft: i've thought about that
09:42 AM roycroft: as usual, space is an issue
09:42 AM Tom_L: convert an old freon tank
09:42 AM roycroft: well my current compressor has a 60 gallon tank
09:42 AM roycroft: i'd need a pretty big one to make much of a difference
09:42 AM travis_farmer[m]: bigger than mine...
09:42 AM Tom_L: mine cuts off at 175
09:43 AM travis_farmer[m]: get some SCUBA tanks and a compressor, that would give you some scary PSI ;-)
09:43 AM roycroft: if i did get another tank i'd want one at least as big as my current one
09:44 AM Tom_L: horizontal then you could mount it to the celing
09:44 AM roycroft: if i could find a place to put it, that would be a lot cheaper than upgrading the compressor itself
09:44 AM travis_farmer[m]: true
09:44 AM Tom_L: or somewhere out of the way
09:44 AM roycroft: the compressor is in a lean-to next to my shop, with a low ceiling
09:44 AM roycroft: but yeah, something like that might work
09:45 AM Tom_L: the tank can go anywhere
09:45 AM roycroft: or another vertical one that i could put outside, just on the other side of the wall from the current one
09:45 AM roycroft: and if the inlet and outlet for the ancillary tank were both fairly high, i'd not have to worry about condensation in that tank
09:46 AM Tom_L: damn the tanks now cost as much as my 80 gal compressor was
09:47 AM roycroft: i can probably find an old, broken compressor on craigslist for fairly cheap
09:47 AM Tom_L: https://www.aircompressorvip.com/horizontal-air-tanks-receivers/477-60-gallon-horizontal-air-tank-with-feet-only-steel-fab-a10029.html
09:47 AM roycroft: use the tank, and recycle the rest
09:47 AM Tom_L: i got a sanborn from sams years ago
09:47 AM * travis_farmer[m] wonders how well auto tank moisture drain valves work, when it is below freezing...
09:47 AM Tom_L: they don't
09:47 AM roycroft: i don't know how much it would cost to get it pressure tested, though
09:48 AM roycroft: it only gets below freezing here a few days per year
09:48 AM travis_farmer[m]: ;-)
09:48 AM roycroft: so that's not really an issue for me
09:48 AM roycroft: but if were down east ...
09:49 AM Tom_L: isn't a hydro test like 2x the rated pressure?
09:49 AM travis_farmer[m]: i mention, because it is freezing here, and my compressor may not always be thawed out when i need to use it. so if the tank is free of moisture, but when it is running and develops moisture, will the valve freeze before it can rid itself of the moisture?
09:50 AM Tom_L: you could safely test it yourself to your current pressure at least
09:50 AM roycroft: yes, tom_l, i think that's what they do
09:50 AM Tom_L: fill it with water
09:50 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Every compressor manual I have seen states not to install them where they can freeze.
09:50 AM roguish[m]: a hydro pressure test is the safest.... pneumatic pressure tests are UXB's
09:51 AM roguish[m]: that's unexploded bombs
09:51 AM travis_farmer[m]: well my shop will not be constantly heated, so it will freeze...
09:51 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: The condensate freezing could crack the drain valve and then you have lots of excitement when the tank re-pressurizes.
09:52 AM roycroft: you could wrap one of those pipe heater cables around it
09:52 AM travis_farmer[m]: if the auto drain works, there shouldn't be much condensate, right?
09:52 AM Tom_L: just blows a little air
09:52 AM travis_farmer[m]: pipe heater, good ideaa
09:52 AM Tom_L: those can rust shut pretty easy
09:52 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: You just need to make sure you drain the tank before you leave it. Or pipe heater.
09:53 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/extinguisher_nut/Pressure_test_cap3.jpg
09:53 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I have not had good luck with autodrains.
09:53 AM Tom_L: pressure test cap i did for fire extinguishers
09:53 AM roycroft: nor i
09:53 AM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, maybe a manual drain, and just drain it often, and a pipe heater...
09:53 AM roycroft: i've tried them
09:53 AM Tom_L: i just put a ball valve on mine with a hose
09:53 AM roycroft: i just made the manual drain on my compressor easier to use
09:53 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: 1000% this
09:54 AM roycroft: so that my tank doesn't fill up with water again :)
09:54 AM Tom_L: roy yours would fill quicker since you're in a humid climate
09:54 AM roycroft: yes
09:54 AM travis_farmer[m]: maine isn't humid?
09:54 AM Tom_L: oregon is
09:55 AM * roycroft just saw a 2014 ford chevy gmc dodge ram pickup on cl
09:55 AM roycroft: with no pics
09:55 AM roycroft: i'd like to see that frankenstein truck
09:55 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: We ruined $1000000 in equipment at work because someone though the autodrains did not need maintenance. Having water run through your semiconductor test equipment is an expensive mistake.
09:55 AM roycroft: that wasn't keywords at the end
09:55 AM roycroft: it was the item description line
09:57 AM CloudEvil: ZincBoy[CAON][m]: fun
09:57 AM travis_farmer[m]: according to the chart at https://www.forbes.com/sites/brianbrettschneider/2018/08/23/oh-the-humidity-why-is-alaska-the-most-humid-state/?sh=613256b1330c (pardon the ads, maine is more humid than oregon
09:58 AM CloudEvil: travis_farmer[m]: Only relatively.
09:58 AM roycroft: but is your humidity higher in the summer than the winter?
09:58 AM Tom_L: on a rainy day, they're about the same
09:58 AM roycroft: oregon isn't necessarily more humid than most of the country, but our humidity is inverted from back east
09:58 AM roycroft: we're humid in the winter and relatively dry in the summer
09:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: i was just going by the chart...
10:00 AM Tom_L: seems we've had more fog than usual this year
10:00 AM roycroft: we've had less than usual
10:00 AM CloudEvil: https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/105e0j7/spiral_fracture_on_input_shaft/
10:01 AM travis_farmer[m]: the average yearly RH in Maine is 71.7% and Oregon is 68.6%
10:01 AM roycroft: but we still have two months of winterish weather
10:01 AM Tom_L: CloudEvil, they just hardened the spline
10:01 AM CloudEvil: Probably, lots going on there.
10:02 AM roycroft: travis_farmer: we get pretty dry from early july to mid-september
10:02 AM roycroft: and i wonder what they consider "oregon"
10:02 AM Tom_L: my bud had a broken crankshaft on his alcohol funny car engine once
10:02 AM Tom_L: it vibrated quite a bit but didn't explode
10:03 AM roycroft: we have four very distinct climate zones - from the coast to the coast range, the middle valley (where portland and eugene are), the cascades, and eastern oregon
10:03 AM roycroft: the latter two are fairly dry
10:03 AM roycroft: the coast to the coast range is extremely humid year-round
10:03 AM roycroft: the valley as i described - dry in the summer and humid in the winter
10:04 AM roycroft: oregon has the most varied climate of any state
10:04 AM roycroft: we are the only state with both a rain forest and a desert
10:04 AM Tom_L: including alaska and hawaii?
10:04 AM roycroft: yes, including alaska and hawaii
10:04 AM roycroft: hawaii has probably the least varied climate
10:05 AM roycroft: it's warm and beautiful there from january 1 through december 31 :)
10:05 AM * JT-Shop just created a fake ad on fb marketplace to see how many a$$'s will send me a message asking is it still available
10:05 AM Tom_L: yeah i just mentioned them so they wouldn't feel left out
10:05 AM roycroft: i need to get ready soon
10:05 AM JT-Shop: Kadiddlehopper is the title of the ad
10:05 AM travis_farmer[m]: LOL JT
10:05 AM roycroft: we're preparing ballots for this stupid special election this weekend
10:05 AM roycroft: so my weekend is shot to hell
10:06 AM * roycroft was up until 1am printing mailing labels last night
10:06 AM roycroft: clyde cadiddlehopper?
10:06 AM * JT-Shop prepares to take a nap
10:06 AM Tom_L: already?
10:06 AM roycroft: he was just on fb
10:06 AM JT-Shop: preparing...
10:06 AM Tom_L: well i _did_ take one while she was at the hair dresser
10:07 AM roycroft: that's pretty stressful, and can require a nap after
10:07 AM roycroft: or a stiff drink
10:07 AM roycroft: or both
10:07 AM Tom_L: sounds like a rather normal chain of events
10:08 AM Tom_L: cl, drink, nap
10:09 AM Tom_L: travis_farmer[m], we need spindle pics!
10:10 AM travis_farmer[m]: i will get some, be patient :-)
10:12 AM travis_farmer[m]: i think somebody would have a fit if i set a 56 pound metal object on the dining room table, just for pics... will have to find some place in my shop to take some pics. :-)
10:19 AM roycroft: or wait until someone goes shopping
10:19 AM travis_farmer[m]: ROFLMAO!!!!
10:19 AM roycroft: which is also the appropriate time to put your powder-coated parts in the oven and run your dirty parts through the dishwasher
10:30 AM roguish[m]: JT-Shop: good morning. just curious, any chance to look at gcode maker???
10:37 AM JT-Shop: looked at but not fixed yet, looks like a couple of issues need fixing
10:38 AM roguish[m]: JT-Shop: no rush.... thanks for checking it...
10:52 AM JT-Shop: I need to start over with the path generation op... it's somewhat broken
10:52 AM roguish[m]: really? did not see that. only issue I noticed is the heights.
10:53 AM roguish[m]: let me know if you need a tester. i'm good at breaking things...
10:53 AM JT-Shop: just depends on the values you use, it's only broken sometime
10:53 AM JT-Shop: ok
10:54 AM roguish[m]: i'm going to use the pattern I got. just manually edit the heights...
10:54 AM roguish[m]: not that big a deal
10:54 AM JT-Shop: a - on z works
11:30 AM Bleepshop: travis_farmer[m4: You could just do it and then ask if they'd rather you had set it on the coffee table with a couple of candles. ;D
11:30 AM Tom_L: usually easier to ask forgiveness over permission
11:31 AM Bleepshop: roycroft: I'm actually looking for an old restaurant scullery style dishwasher to use for parts. LOL
11:31 AM _unreal_: https://github.com/berin-aquaquad/orange-pi-5
11:31 AM _unreal_: just did an update
11:32 AM _unreal_: I got that RPI4 heatsink and have already adjusted the cad drawing
11:34 AM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Why not just throw a 5V/1F cap across the RTC power connections?
11:35 AM _unreal_: ! never thought about that
11:35 AM _unreal_: hum
11:35 AM Bleepshop: _unreal_: https://www.amazon.com/Capacitor-Supercapacitor-Combination-Vehicle-Recorder/dp/B0B2JC8CT2
11:36 AM Bleepshop: There's 1.5f
11:36 AM * travis_farmer[m4 uploaded an image: (563KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/bwjgZTMXHEKfUasixbAYEOCw/20230107_123406.jpg >

11:37 AM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Times 2. So you could parallel for 3f and who knows how many years that RTC will run with that. LOL
11:37 AM _unreal_: I'm not much of an electronics guy. but what about a cr2032 with a diode inline? just so it does not back feed 5v
11:38 AM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Use a current limiting resistor or the inrush current when it tries to charge the first time make let the magic blue smoke out of the onboard regulator.
11:39 AM _unreal_: the RTC chips minimum voltage is what 1.5v if mem serves? been a few days since I looked at the PDF
11:39 AM _unreal_: Bleepshop, ya I figured something like that. prob 200 ohm
11:39 AM _unreal_: 50 ohm
11:40 AM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Will the RTC run on 2.5V ? 3.2V [CR2032] - 0.7V [diode drop].
11:40 AM _unreal_: Bleepshop, http://www.orangepi.org/html/hardWare/computerAndMicrocontrollers/details/Orange-Pi-5.html
11:41 AM _unreal_: http://www.orangepi.org/html/hardWare/computerAndMicrocontrollers/service-and-support/Orange-pi-5.html
11:41 AM Bleepshop: 2 x 2032 in series with 2 1N4001 in series will give 5V no load. 3.2 + 3.2 - 0.7 - 0.7 = 5
11:50 AM _unreal_: I think the super cap is likely the best idea. problem is that I dont know if it would backfeed into the board.
11:51 AM * roguish[m] uploaded an image: (63KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/JzdfZVaODCLMQsuuAKwGgXxp/image.png >
11:52 AM roguish[m]: JT-Shop: this is what I'm talking about. see the 'setup' if top of stock is 2.5, and I want to cut .5 off, what should the 'full depth' and 'step' be ???
11:52 AM JT-Shop: -0.5
11:53 AM JT-Shop: step is a positive number
11:53 AM JT-Shop: I think
11:54 AM JT-Shop: seems to work here
11:54 AM * roguish[m] uploaded an image: (85KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/LZeowIoSCFKwVbyXQgKuiltM/image.png >
11:54 AM Bleepshop: _unreal_: It needs to feed the board or you get no power to the RTC.
11:54 AM _unreal_: palm to face
11:55 AM roguish[m]: see the z move highlighted. z-0.2500 not 2.25
11:55 AM Tom_L: roguish[m], for that G91 should be set
11:55 AM _unreal_: Bleepshop, http://www.orangepi.org/html/hardWare/computerAndMicrocontrollers/details/Orange-Pi-5.html
11:55 AM _unreal_: the schematic is right there
11:55 AM Tom_L: for what you're saying G90 should be set
11:55 AM Tom_L: i believe therein lies the difference
11:56 AM Tom_L: 2.25 = 2.75
11:56 AM Tom_L: for .250 increment
11:57 AM roguish[m]: Tom_L: yes, i understand about g90 vs g91. the x, y moves are all absolute, not relative.
11:57 AM JT-Shop: roguish[m], looks like somewhere in the code I'm assuming top of material is Z0
11:58 AM roguish[m]: kind looks like it...
11:58 AM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Looking at schematic and the supercap with no diodes or the pair of 2032s with a pair of diodes will work.
11:58 AM Bleepshop: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Bre2q0bGgXQuQlYaYDMvwstpvtHLmcgX
11:58 AM Tom_L: roguish[m], hard to tell on the x y moves from this vantage point
11:58 AM JT-Shop: ;Top 0.0
11:59 AM JT-Shop: top = round((depthPasses * stepdepth) - cutdepth, 4)
12:00 PM JT-Shop: nap time... I'll sleep on it
12:00 PM roguish[m]: that's coolllll, enjoy
12:00 PM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Page 11/26 RTC IC section. The B5819WS diode has a reverse voltage of 40V so you'll be fine with 5v.
12:00 PM Tom_L: different coding methods...
12:01 PM _unreal_: ya been looking at it
12:04 PM _unreal_: Bleepshop, http://roverbooksteel.narod.ru/tech/rtc/rtc_HYM8563.pdf
12:05 PM _unreal_: 1.8v-5.5v
12:32 PM _unreal_: I wonder if this could be used on an RPI or what ever for DUAL display? https://somlabs.com/product/dsi2hdmi/
12:39 PM unterhaus: if you cover your Christmas pudding with brandy, eventually you forget that you don't like it
12:42 PM _unreal_: sound advice
01:02 PM Tom_L: roguish[m], as a matter of safety i always keep my material top at or below Z0
01:02 PM Tom_L: then if you send your tool home it won't hit anything but unexpected clamps :)
01:03 PM Tom_L: usually it's a fair margin below Z0
01:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: how old is this Christmas pudding? about 2 weeks?
01:03 PM Tom_L: guys that touchoff do it differently i'm sure
01:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there might be a reason why it tastes bad or worse by now :)
01:04 PM unterhaus: recent vintage Christmas pudding. It's not all bad, mostly because the cranberries were concentrated in one area
01:04 PM unterhaus: It wasn't fully cooked, we had to steam it
01:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: have a recipe?
01:05 PM Tom_L: just add rum
01:05 PM Tom_L: err brandy..
01:05 PM unterhaus: no, secret family recipe from the people that made it for us
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah doesn't matter as long as the main ingredient is alcohol
01:06 PM unterhaus: exactly, want a little Christmas pudding in your brandy?
01:06 PM Tom_L: i have since learned that some of the 'secret family recipes' came from grandma's 'Betty Crocker Cookbook'
01:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://theconversation.com/a-brief-history-of-christmas-pudding-and-why-it-can-actually-be-quite-good-for-you-151160
01:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: old cookbooks are great
01:07 PM Tom_L: yessir
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "A Christmas pudding should have 13 ingredients – that represent Jesus and the 12 disciples."
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but an unlucky number
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but rum or brandy as the 14th luckys it up again
01:10 PM Tom_L: my mother passed a boxfull of recipes to my wife: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/4PwAAOSwGtJjTAfk/s-l1600.jpg
01:10 PM unterhaus: Tom_L, most of my mother's secret family recipes came from Betty Crocker
01:10 PM Tom_L: which came from her mother
01:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh and they would put a trinket in the pudding
01:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: did your slice have a prize?
01:11 PM unterhaus: My grandmother was French, so it's really hard to follow her recipes
01:11 PM unterhaus: I don't think this recipe was that lucky
01:12 PM unterhaus: The one recipe I wish I still had was my mother's gingerbread recipe
01:12 PM unterhaus: but you couldn't read it anyway, her handwriting was enough to keep things secret
01:13 PM Tom_L: julia child had some good ones too
01:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had the fortune of visiting family in the old country and discovered that my mothers spin on traditional old country recipes was actually the families version
01:14 PM unterhaus: The only recipe of my mother's that has survived is anise cookies, which I always hated
01:14 PM unterhaus: I just found out you can substitute vanilla, might be good
01:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah I'm not a fan of anise either
01:15 PM unterhaus: The recipe survived like something out of a horror movie
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my favorite as a kid were my moms Pfeffernusse
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but I can't find any made the same
01:16 PM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Hell, throw >1f of cap across it and call it good.
01:17 PM JT-Shop: roguish[m], get a fresh copy of the deb and install it
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: I never liked the flavor of licorice either
01:18 PM unterhaus: Is there a recent sd card image to install lcnc on a Pi?
01:18 PM Bleepshop: unterhaus: You do have an advantage that I didn't. Most of what your mother cooked was probably edible. LOL
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: as a child i felt bad for earlier generations where licorice was "the candy"
01:19 PM unterhaus: my mother was raised on a farm, lots of practice
01:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Bleepshop: quite and eat your gruel or no gruel for dessert!
01:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: quite/quiet
01:20 PM Bleepshop: Gruel? Hey that's actually edible. Try hamburgers you could play street hockey with.
01:22 PM Bleepshop: Chicken with a GOODYEAR stamp. Food bad enough my tapeworm called the SPCA. LOL
01:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: heh, reminds me of that old line by Curly
01:23 PM Bleepshop: CaptainHindsight:
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "I got a tapeworm and that's good enough for him"
01:24 PM Bleepshop: If I'd gotten what Curly got my tapeworm wouldn't have bitched. LMAO
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Bleepshop: did you send me a blank line or did the bot drop it?
01:25 PM Bleepshop: I hit enter by mistake and broke the line.
01:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ah, I think the bot does drop things at times across netwroks
01:25 PM Bleepshop: Time to go to Santa Fe and see what I can find for junque.
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 'this steak still has marks from where the jockey was hitting it"
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Bleepshop: NM?
01:26 PM Bleepshop: Yeah. NM
01:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the indiscriminate shooting there has made the national news
01:27 PM Bleepshop: I think the worse one is "this steak still has marks from where the shoemaker was nailing it to a shoe.". LOL
01:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is it flack vest time there yet?
01:29 PM Bleepshop: It was 2 pairs of long underwear a couple of weeks ago.
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: hate to see a political war start in NM
01:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well i do hope that "New Mexico" becomes part of the USA some day
01:30 PM Bleepshop: CaptainHindsight: Yeah, The Hispanic population will pop up and btch-slap both sides, then stomp on whichever side actually started it.
01:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.npr.org/2018/11/30/672401957/new-mexico-id-temporarily-rejected-as-foreign-by-d-c-clerk
01:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Bleepshop: is it difficult to find used machines in NM?
01:33 PM Bleepshop: Yeah, years ago people were told to have their passports in order if they were going to the Atlanta Olympics.
01:33 PM Bleepshop: Depends on the type of machine and whether you want it to be more than a paperweight.
01:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: have fun searching today
01:35 PM Bleepshop: I got my 48x48 for $100 and then had to replace all the electronics and a stepper to get it functional.
01:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: $100 is not bad a for a machine base
01:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and screws
01:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/entry-level-machine-cnc-router/new-carve-cnc
01:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: $2,373 ?!
01:40 PM sensille: made out of titanium?
01:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sensille: Chinese aluminum
01:42 PM sensille: so 2k chinese dollars?
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: still overpriced
01:44 PM sensille: now that i have nice motors and electronics, i want a better base, too
01:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sensille: is this for a router?
01:49 PM sensille: yes
01:50 PM sensille: i'll probably try to build one and fuck up :)
01:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: are you in the midwest by chance? I might have some iron soon
02:11 PM sensille: berlin
02:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sensille: is there much old machinery from the old GDR days left?
02:27 PM travis_farmer[m]: well, my sister is making pot butter in a crockpot... i don't do pot, but i think i am getting a contact high, just being in the house...
02:30 PM travis_farmer[m]: this is not good... i hope it doesn't react with my meds...
02:36 PM travis_farmer[m]: i managed to get my VFD cable soldered to the connector... not crazy about my ability to solder large wire... but they are soldered. i would have preferred a mechanical connection, but i use what i have available i guess.
02:37 PM travis_farmer[m]: Tom_L: did you see my picture posts? round about 12:35? i will post more as i work on stuff.
02:41 PM travis_farmer[m]: i started on an adapter plate to mount the spindle. drilling and tapping 6 holes is a PITA. i will get a better one made at some point. one that can be adjusted side to side. should have the spindle mounted after tomorrow. :-)
02:43 PM travis_farmer[m]: hmmm, your timezone, Tom_L, it would be 11:35, according to the IRC log
02:44 PM travis_farmer[m]: ...everybody napping???
02:47 PM travis_farmer[m]: must be... :-)
03:08 PM XXCoder: interesting blondihack video
03:55 PM sensille: CaptHindsight[m]: like that? https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/universal-fraesmaschine-von-fritz-werner-bj-1960/2321298147-168-1119
03:56 PM sensille: i think if you look for a while you might be able to find something for cheap that is worth restoring, but that's definitely nothing i want in my basement
03:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: http://www.lathes.co.uk/fritz-werner/
04:00 PM sensille: not gdr, western berlin
04:00 PM sensille: but those are all out of my league
04:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what was on the old signage GDR or DDR?
04:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had this discussion with someone that moved here from the GDR a few years ago
04:04 PM sensille: sorry, i have no first hand experience with those machines. anything else than DDR would surprise me
04:04 PM sensille: or maybe russian, but not english
05:47 PM JT[m]1: Hmm
06:36 PM Tom_L: JT[m]1, how's the 'real' bowl coming?
06:39 PM * Bleepshop returns after managing to spend the staggering sum of $3.

06:48 PM Tom_L: JT[m]1, JT-Cave, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/mesact/mesact_pdf_error.png
06:55 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, so far just on the 7i96s
06:56 PM Tom_L: 7i92T also
06:57 PM Tom_L: THCAD
06:57 PM Tom_L: THCAD2
07:00 PM Tom_L: also doesn't check for 'file exhists'
07:01 PM Tom_L: 7i96s
07:03 PM Tom_L: 7i73 pins
07:06 PM Tom_L: 7i48
07:07 PM Tom_L: 7i33
07:11 PM Tom_L: ok i think i checked most of them
07:17 PM _unreal_: Just throwing it out there. Is there anyone that is looking for a shell for housing cnc controls? I have two good sized shells that would make great cnc control housings.
07:17 PM _unreal_: Both have doors on them, and both have secondary seperated back compartments
07:18 PM _unreal_: I'm considering getting rid of one, and dont want to toss out the one I dont use if I dont have to.
07:28 PM isaacggw[m]: I'm in the prosses of converting my pm25 mill to cnc, and I just killed the stock spindle motor driver. Instead of getting a new one, I'm thinking of going strate to using a servo to drive the spindle. I would like to try to spend under 750$ on the servo+driver. Could anyone recommend a servo similar in power to the stock 750w motor? Also, if i go to using a servo as a spindle, can I drive it straight from the 7i96s control board (I do
07:28 PM isaacggw[m]: not want to have to use any expantion cards)?
07:29 PM isaacggw[m]: s/750/600/
07:29 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: 8i20 mesa board is the best option.
07:29 PM isaacggw[m]: Can I use my 7i96s?
07:30 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Yes, the 8i20 connects to the RS422 sserial port.
07:31 PM isaacggw[m]: Ok
07:32 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Otherwise you will need to do some machining to fit a new motor.
07:33 PM isaacggw[m]: Oh, your suggesting that i use the 8i20 to drive the existing motor?
07:34 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Yes. That is the easiest option from a mechanical standpoint.
07:35 PM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Got a pic? I was about to rebuild into a 4U rack case, but could use more room.
07:35 PM _unreal_: are you in the USA
07:35 PM _unreal_: a 4u is bigger then these
07:36 PM _unreal_: well over all area bigger
07:36 PM _unreal_: what size do you need?
07:37 PM _unreal_: area wise a 2u might be equal in area? but its a totally different shape
07:37 PM isaacggw[m]: I am fine with making new mounts (that is the easy part for me). If I was to use a servo, what servo would you recommend for the spindle?
07:37 PM Bleepshop: _unreal_: I'd like to find 24x24x16 where there's room for the VFD and all the secondaries.
07:37 PM _unreal_: ya they are not 24"x24"
07:38 PM Bleepshop: This is 18x18x8 roughly.
07:38 PM _unreal_: checking
07:39 PM _unreal_: 10x18 x 10-deep
07:39 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I am partial to the Yaskawa Sigma-7 line. I have had good results with these. I haven't tried the cheaper options.
07:41 PM Bleepshop: Not gonna fit. Got 2 40V PSUs, 4 DM542s a 7i96s, some SSRs, another DIN PSU, whole bucket of crap. LOL
07:43 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: These are the ones I used in my rotary axis: https://www.vitalsystem.com/portal/cnc/motor_and_drives/Yaskawa/750WSet.php
07:44 PM _unreal_: Bleepshop, about a month ago I had a case that would have bitted that. but I tossed it out after getting items out of it I wanted
07:44 PM _unreal_: the luxury yachts toss stuff all the time.
07:45 PM _unreal_: Bleepshop, if your looking for any DIN rail stuff I'm loaded you name it I prob have 3 flavors
07:45 PM _unreal_: I mean almost anything
07:47 PM isaacggw[m]: Those cost to much:( Do not want to spend more than like $600
07:47 PM _unreal_: Man this is amazing, I have a WIFI capable LED light that is almost 10 years old and its JUST starting to have some flicker issues.
07:48 PM Bleepshop: I'm probably actually gonna look for a rack mount PC case and call it good. I can do the same thing I did in the old panel and layer stuff on Lexan plates.
07:48 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: DMM-tech would be the other option but I haven't used them. https://www.dmm-tech.com/
07:48 PM _unreal_: Bleepshop, I do have a 1u LCD station
07:48 PM _unreal_: thats FLIP UP lcd with keyboard
07:48 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Should be able to put together a package for about $600 at 750W.
07:48 PM _unreal_: Bleepshop, I'm NOT attached to it
07:48 PM _unreal_: I can check model if your interested
07:49 PM _unreal_: and I have tested it working
07:49 PM _unreal_: its got a flip up LCD display keyboard and touch pad
07:49 PM _unreal_: very heavy.
07:50 PM Bleepshop: _unreal_: I've got an Acer LED/LCD that I've been using with a Velocfire keyboard and a Trackman Marble all on a floating arm.

07:53 PM markgonz: hello everyone:)
07:53 PM markgonz: hope everything is well
07:54 PM isaacggw[m]: Should I use and ac or dc servo? (i do not know a lot about servos)
07:54 PM _unreal_: isaacggw[m], the first question is what are you using this motor on
07:55 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: AC servo for sure. That is pretty much what is in there. A DC motor is older tech and is harder in some ways to deal with.
07:55 PM * Bleepshop needs food.
07:55 PM isaacggw[m]: Ok, thanks
07:55 PM _unreal_: isaacggw[m], how big a motor do you need
07:56 PM Bleepshop: BBIAB. There's a baked potato in the oven and a steak I need to do rude things to with a frying pan.
07:56 PM isaacggw[m]: I am useing it to replace the stock spindle motor on my PM25
07:56 PM isaacggw[m]: It is a 750w dc motor
07:56 PM isaacggw[m]: So something similar
07:56 PM _unreal_: ahh ok then yaa brushless servo
07:57 PM markgonz: you need a servo because you want to do tapping?
07:57 PM isaacggw[m]: Yes
07:58 PM markgonz: ok
07:58 PM isaacggw[m]: I am going to want to upgrade to one at some point, so dont see a point in spending more time and money on the current one
07:58 PM markgonz: maybe take a look at jmc servos with integrated driver
07:59 PM _unreal_: onboard encoder+controller is the way to go if its with in your budget
08:00 PM _unreal_: then you only need a timin belt setup and mode adjustments if you have a stacked timing belt pulling setup. for speed/torque options
08:01 PM isaacggw[m]: Ok
08:01 PM markgonz: jmc makes a 660 watt one, the biggeset they make
08:01 PM isaacggw[m]: Could you link me to one that you recommend?
08:01 PM markgonz: 3000 rpm
08:03 PM isaacggw[m]: do any of the servos run on 120v? I only see 220v
08:03 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: You won't find much at the 750W level that will run on 120V.
08:03 PM markgonz: https://www.sorotec.de/shop/JMC-Servo-Motor-with-integrated-driver-660-Watt---72-Volt---3000-1-min.html
08:05 PM markgonz: quick question if someone can help me, i am trying to setup pnc config for a mill on mesa 7i96s
08:06 PM markgonz: however when I start says you have no hostmot2 firmware downloaded on folder /lib/firmware/hm2/
08:07 PM markgonz: i have downloaded but I don't know how to extract the zip file to that folder
08:07 PM markgonz: i suppose its done on the terminal but Im a noob
08:08 PM markgonz: and can't figure it out on the file manager
08:10 PM isaacggw[m]: ok
08:10 PM isaacggw[m]: how are the clear path motors?
08:12 PM markgonz: clearpath are really nice and the documentation for tuning is better than jmc
08:12 PM markgonz: jmc have skinnier axles and clearpath seems more solid
08:12 PM markgonz: but more expensive so depends on your budget
08:13 PM markgonz: clearpath easier to buy if you live in the USA
08:13 PM isaacggw[m]: what type of clear path would i want to use for a spindle?
08:15 PM markgonz: Im not sure maybe try to search what other people have used
08:20 PM isaacggw[m]: ZincBoy[CA, ON] what do you think about this as a spindle drive motor? https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/t6-series-750w-ac-servo-motor-kit-3000rpm-2-39nm-17-bit-encoder-ip65-t6-rs750h2a3-m17s
08:22 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Looks like it should be fine. You probably need to add a fan to cool the motor if you are using it for extended periods.
08:23 PM isaacggw[m]: Ok
08:24 PM isaacggw[m]: They also have this one: https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/t6-series-750w-ac-servo-motor-kit-3000rpm-2-39nm-w-brake-17-bit-encoder-ip65-t6-rs750h2b3-m17s
08:24 PM isaacggw[m]: What is the difference?
08:24 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: You don't need a brake.
08:24 PM isaacggw[m]: Ok
08:24 PM isaacggw[m]: Cool
08:25 PM isaacggw[m]: Think I will order the one above
08:25 PM isaacggw[m]: (the first one i linked
08:25 PM isaacggw[m]: )
08:27 PM isaacggw[m]: I should be able to wire it up straight to the 7i96s?
08:28 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: The same way you would have been able to wire up the original drive. Analog input to the drive with a few io to control fwd/rev and start/stop.
08:28 PM isaacggw[m]: Cool!
08:34 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Just took a quick look at the manual and that drive does not look to support an analog input mode. You will need to control the speed with modbus commands or by using the step/dir input and one of the stepgen outputs on the 7i96s.
08:35 PM isaacggw[m]: Ok think i will look for a differerent one then
08:39 PM isaacggw[m]: I am back to the dyn4 servo

08:57 PM Tom_L: isaacggw[m], mine is a 120v model
08:59 PM Tom_L: someone else here put one on their lathe
09:00 PM Tom_L: or glockcnc has them but long backorder wait (so they say)
09:24 PM isaacggw[m]: Do you have any links to some thing like what you are describing that is in stock?
09:54 PM norias: i wish syil would make a lathe
10:02 PM Tom_L: isaacggw[m], just the ali one
10:03 PM Tom_L: it appears to be 220v but you could contact them about a 120v version possibly
10:04 PM isaacggw[m]: Okay
10:05 PM Tom_L: the glockcnc one is analog in and should hook right up to your 7i96s
10:05 PM Tom_L: i did edit a few parameters on mine on the vfd but no big deal
10:06 PM isaacggw[m]: Got it
10:06 PM Tom_L: i was converting from a sherline to a custom mill so the bracket was nice to have
10:07 PM Tom_L: but i did wait quite a while for it
10:08 PM Tom_L: i'm pretty sure he gets them from the same place
10:13 PM Tom_L: isaacggw[m], i did contact ali about docs and what they sent wasn't translated but google did a fair job: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/PDF/BLDC/
10:54 PM isaacggw[m]: Cool
10:55 PM isaacggw[m]: Thanks
10:58 PM isaacggw[m]: If I don’t go with a servo as the spindle, I will consider the above
10:59 PM isaacggw[m]: The 8i20 mesa board also seems like a good option but it is out of stock
11:01 PM isaacggw[m]: Does anyone know if it is in stock somewhere or when it will be back in stock?
11:02 PM isaacggw[m]: Also has anyone made a custom pcb similar to the 8i20?
11:05 PM Tom_L: i'd imagine mesanet may be the only place to get the 8i20
11:22 PM Bleepshop: isaacggw[m]: Does it need to be 120V/1200W? Can you use a 220V/2200W watercooled?
11:23 PM Bleepshop: I'me happy as hell with this one. Twist your fingers off torque down to 60RPM.
11:23 PM Bleepshop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078J5CXP3
11:25 PM Bleepshop: I want to try milling some polycarbonate with it and see If it'll run slow enough to not clog the cutter.
11:29 PM isaacggw[m]: I already have a spindle with a tts set up, that is not what I am looking for
11:30 PM Bleepshop: TTS ?
11:30 PM isaacggw[m]: R8 spindle with tormach tooling system
11:31 PM Bleepshop: Ah, Automatic tool changer?
11:31 PM roycroft: that's what i'm planning on getting, isaacggw
