12:36 AM isaacggw[m]: how would i go about setting this probe up with Linuxcnc?
12:46 AM isaacggw[m]: https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Universal-Waterproof-Multifunctional-Equipment/dp/B0B46Y6GG7/
12:52 AM jpa-: isaacggw[m]: black wire to gnd, red wire to VCC, signal wire to IO pin, then just normal probe config
12:53 AM jpa-: i put a 3.5mm plug on the other end & used a jack with switch, to command spindle inhibit when probe is plugged in - just to avoid any stupid mistakes :)
01:33 AM Deejay: moin
03:37 AM sensille: interesting license for eCam: free to use on weekends
03:50 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning
04:27 AM Tom_L: morning
04:39 AM sensille: can you recommend any cheap (compatible) handwheels for my 6040?
04:40 AM sensille: chinese ones start at 40 euro shipped
04:42 AM sensille: this one looks decent: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003781557490.html
04:42 AM sensille: but i have no idea what to look for in a handwheel
04:44 AM travis_farmer[m]: this is what i have: https://www.ebay.com/itm/174503619599 not saying it is the best, but it works for me
05:39 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: quiet in here this morning...
08:00 AM sensille: the handwheel i linked seems to use a secret uart protocol. i asked them for a specification
08:58 AM travis_farmer[m]: hmmm, the 4.5KW spindle i wanted is no longer available on Amazon... i found it on eBay though. i noticed too, i had thought the air control valves were built into the housing, when they are not. so i will still need to run 3 air-lines for the 4.5KW spindle, but at least i won't need to run coolant lines. now... i just need the IRS to get moving and send me my tax return check.
08:58 AM solarwind: I just realized hydraulic cylinder rams (on forklifts, etc.) don't rust. Are they chrome plated? Plated with something else? Plated and then ground and polished or what?
08:59 AM solarwind: travis_farmer[m4 not before trump sends in his taxes ;)
08:59 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Chrome plated and covered in hydraulic oil.
08:59 AM travis_farmer[m]: ZincBoy[CA, ON]: just what i was about to say ;-)
08:59 AM solarwind: ZincBoy[CAON][m] the piston end is covered in oil?
09:00 AM solarwind: Only the cylinder end contains oil
09:00 AM solarwind: It's not a double acting cylinder
09:00 AM solarwind: Not sure it would be covered in oil unless you covered it in oil. I just touched it and it's pretty clean
09:00 AM solarwind: Also the outdoor ones are subject to weather, so the oil would come off pretty quick
09:18 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:52 AM unterhaus: I have managed to break the end off of the rods two hydraulic cylinders. Machined them again no problem
09:53 AM unterhaus: I assume they are ground. The ones on airplane landing gear certainly are
09:56 AM unterhaus: wow, my ebay global shipment actually moved in my direction for once
10:11 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, all I did was accept smoe's pr to move the debian directory so nothing major
10:15 AM isaacggw[m]: So do I need to use pro basic? Or can I somehow probe straight from Linux CNC?
10:23 AM pcw--home: probing is normally done in gcode using g38 so any GUI will work
10:24 AM pcw--home: (some GUIs make it easier though with built in illustrative graphics and gcode routines)
10:24 AM zephyr9900: isaacggw there are g code probe routines you can use with a touch probe. That is what I have done in the past when I had a touch probe. You just need an input connection to the probe. There is an input pin motion.probe-input that you need to connect to the probe.
10:25 AM zephyr9900: connected in hal
10:39 AM isaacggw[m]: what docs should i follow to install probe basic on raspberry pi?
10:46 AM unterhaus: til there is a facebook lcnc group. FB has no ideas what it's about
10:52 AM roycroft: that's probably for the better, unterhaus
10:53 AM unterhaus: it actually has a decent amount of activity on it
10:53 AM unterhaus: There is a forum thread entitled "VTK Backplot on RPi 4" that apparently talks about installing probe basic on a pi
11:12 AM _unreal_: unterhaus, are you sure global shipment didnt move and the package stayed still?
11:12 AM unterhaus: they shipped it back and forth between NJ and Indiana. And then apparently they moved it around a warehouse
11:14 AM unterhaus: it left the USPS warehouse in PA this morning, apparently it's being carried on foot because it's not getting here until next week
11:18 AM roycroft: for the fourth day in a row, the usps has sent me an email with scanned images of 5 pieced of first class mail that they claim would be delivered that day
11:18 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, you need something built?
11:18 AM roycroft: friday last, saturday last, yesterday, and today
11:18 AM roycroft: should i have any confidence that a trip to the post office today will yield positive results?
11:19 AM roycroft: it's the same five pieces of mail each day
11:20 AM roycroft: one of the letters is from my boss, and i suspect it's a year-end bonus check
11:20 AM roycroft: i would very much like to receive that letter and see what is inside it
11:21 AM roycroft: maybe it's my walking papers
11:21 AM roycroft: and maybe that would be as good as a bonus check :)
11:41 AM Tom_L: maybe
11:42 AM Tom_L: or better yet, maybe he want's to promote you so you can work side by side with him
11:44 AM roycroft: he's trying to sell the isp business to me
11:45 AM roycroft: that's always an interesting game - he's been trying to sell it to me for several years now
11:45 AM roycroft: he'll ask me about it
11:45 AM roycroft: i always respond "sure, i'm interested - send me financials and i'll evaluate them"
11:46 AM roycroft: and then the conversation ends for a few months, when he asks again
11:46 AM Tom_L: tell him to sh** or get off the pot
11:48 AM roycroft: i had to get some auto-responder software for my elections work for the country fair, as i get a lot of identical requests from members
11:48 AM roycroft: perhaps i should set up an auto-responder for my boss when he emails about selling me the isp
12:03 PM travis_farmer[m4: came out to my "shop", and the dang lock on the door was frozen solid... had to torch it with my mini butane torch... then, the network was frozen, so i had to wait for that to warm up before i could login to discord... now it is snowing... some days are just extra special 🙂 (if only i could remember now what i came out for)
12:05 PM He[m]1: Network frozen? Dang\
12:05 PM He[m]1: * Network frozen? Dang
12:05 PM Tom_L: you must be getting old
12:05 PM travis_farmer[m4: yeah, when the switch gets cold, it acts up
12:05 PM JT[m]1: Lol
12:05 PM Tom_L: welcome to the club
12:05 PM travis_farmer[m4: yes tom_l, i am LOL
12:05 PM Tom_L: naw... you're not
12:05 PM travis_farmer[m4: and only 43 🙂
12:05 PM JT[m]1: I am
12:05 PM Tom_L: JT[m]1, i'll wait for your signal to build then
12:05 PM Tom_L: i'm not far behind ya either
12:05 PM JT[m]1: Ok
12:06 PM JT[m]1: Roger
12:06 PM * Tom_L looks around for Roger
12:06 PM travis_farmer[m4: lol
12:07 PM JT[m]1: Gotta figure out how to download a zipped firmware and where to install it
12:07 PM Tom_L: yeah that may be tricky
12:07 PM travis_farmer[m4: for what?
12:07 PM Tom_L: mesact
12:07 PM Tom_L: to make the deb smaller
12:07 PM JT[m]1: I'll finger it out
12:07 PM travis_farmer[m4: oh, not what i thought...
12:07 PM Tom_L: offload a few things
12:07 PM JT[m]1: Yep by 200mb
12:08 PM JT[m]1: Yep I figure most folks only have one main board
12:09 PM Tom_L: the ones that would likely need/use mesact would
12:09 PM travis_farmer[m4: i must be special, i have 3 boards (just bare breakout boards) 😉
12:10 PM Tom_L: but one main one
12:10 PM travis_farmer[m4: oh, yeah... i guess i AM special LMAO
12:10 PM travis_farmer[m4: special-ed 😉
12:10 PM JT[m]1: A user could download all of the firmware
12:11 PM Tom_L: travis_, i refrained..
12:11 PM travis_farmer[m4: yes Tom_L, and i filled in 😉
12:12 PM Tom_L: JT[m]1, maybe you should work on a 'web' install :)
12:12 PM JT[m]1: Hmm
12:12 PM travis_farmer[m4: hmmm, just noticed my shop security alarm battery froze and split in the cold 😦
12:12 PM Tom_L: but
12:13 PM Tom_L: usually if you see a web install there is also a full install sitting nearby
12:13 PM Tom_L: worth a thought anyway
12:13 PM JT[m]1: Oh I understand now, a minimal install
12:14 PM He[m]1: What's better about mesact over pncConf anyway?
12:14 PM JT[m]1: Smoe wants to reduce the repo size
12:14 PM Tom_L: yeah maybe i should have worded it different
12:14 PM Tom_L: i know
12:15 PM He[m]1: Had a cursory glance at mesact but it seems that it's mostly flashing tools and some better latency tests?
12:15 PM Tom_L: no
12:15 PM Tom_L: same tests just presented better
12:15 PM JT[m]1: Mesact is a configuration tool plus much more
12:15 PM Tom_L: for someone that doesn't know how to make a config
12:16 PM JT[m]1: And someone that wants to edit the ini file
12:17 PM JT[m]1: Mesact does not over write their change
12:18 PM He[m]1: Oh that does sound pretty handy
12:21 PM Tom_L: a work in progress but well on it's way
12:21 PM JT[m]1: Always improving
12:24 PM JT[m]1: Long lunch today, this place is packed
12:24 PM Tom_L: oh?
12:24 PM * Tom_L had soup
12:25 PM JT[m]1: 12 west farmington mo
12:26 PM travis_farmer[m4: had corn chowder :-)
12:29 PM * travis_farmer[m4 uploaded an image: (311KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/jauriarts.org/ZFlNrYDWJXCnZfepaPFAwxRV/20221228_132724.jpg >
12:29 PM travis_farmer[m4: When alarm batteries get cold...
12:30 PM Tom_L: the 9v in my garage door opener froze so it wouldn't open the door for a while but now that it's thawed out it's working again
12:30 PM Tom_L: that was a first
12:30 PM travis_farmer[m4: this is (was) a SLA, i think when it thaws, it will make a mess...
12:32 PM travis_farmer[m4: well, having not remembered what i came out for, i am just wasting heat out here. heading back inside i guess...
12:49 PM JT[m]1: JT heads to the next stop
12:49 PM Tom_L: work or play?
12:50 PM JT[m]1: Play
12:51 PM JT[m]1: Going to get some German sweet baloney
01:27 PM XXCoder: wow. new heat pumps that works below 20f
01:27 PM XXCoder: https://electrek.co/2022/12/26/us-companies-are-producing-heat-pumps-that-work-below-20f/
01:49 PM Rab: Oh, *-20F*. I was gonna say, my heat pump seems to work fine at 20F.
01:50 PM XXCoder: reading urls eh ;)
01:50 PM XXCoder: yeah news seems awesome
02:02 PM _unreal_: There finished fixing the dryer. The parts showed up finally. New heating element and all sensor replacements
02:02 PM _unreal_: back in and working good
02:02 PM _unreal_: just started a wash
02:27 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, my kid tests those
02:27 PM XXCoder: tests? as in beta testing or at factory testing ensure quality is good?
02:28 PM Tom_L: yes, he works at Johnson in the engineering test facility
02:28 PM XXCoder: nice
02:28 PM Tom_L: after getting laid off 2x from machining jobs they paid him to go back for a different occupation
02:28 PM Tom_L: due to covid
02:30 PM Tom_L: so they have a bunch of test cells they run different scenario on them
02:34 PM Tom_L: using different refrigerants etc
02:34 PM XXCoder: cool :)
02:34 PM Tom_L: i guess some are even flamable... i don't know alot about it... yet
02:36 PM Tom_L: and yes they do assembly line pulls as well
02:41 PM Tom_L: i'll have to show him this because some of the tests they have been doing are rather picky on the parameters
02:47 PM XXCoder: I really hope there will be more heat pumps being used
02:47 PM XXCoder: my room ac is a heat pump so im using it to heat my room too
02:48 PM roycroft: heat pumps have been around for a very long time, and it somewhat boggles the mind that they are not more commonly used
02:49 PM XXCoder: yeah. well we got -20f and below functional ones. hope it means it will really sell now
02:49 PM roycroft: they can be exceptionally efficient these days, but even when they were less so, they were more effient than most other forms of tempurature regulation
02:49 PM roycroft: that doesn't even need to be an issue
02:50 PM XXCoder: mine still works down to arpound 5f? at 1.5 ratio compared to just pure heating
02:50 PM roycroft: one of the most efficient ways of deploying a heat pump is not to just exchange heat with the outside air
02:50 PM XXCoder: when warmer its closer to 4 or so
02:50 PM roycroft: but to store excess heat and recover it when needed
02:50 PM roycroft: which can easily be done, and has been done for decades
02:51 PM roycroft: bury a large tubing system well underground, well below the frost point, where the temperature is fairly stable year-round
02:51 PM roycroft: insulate that tubing system well
02:51 PM roycroft: fill it with a coolant that has high thermal capacitance
02:52 PM roycroft: exchange your excess heat with the coolant in the summer and store it underground in the tubing system
02:52 PM XXCoder: yeah I know of such scheme
02:52 PM roycroft: recover heat from the coolant in the winter and warm your building interior with it
02:52 PM roycroft: it works very very well
02:52 PM roycroft: it does require a fair amount of real estate to install the ductwork
02:52 PM roycroft: and there's a high front-end cost to installing it
02:53 PM roycroft: but it's ridiculously efficient and inexpensive to operate once it's set up
02:53 PM XXCoder: I do wonder if can do deeper rather than wider
02:53 PM roycroft: st vincent de paul built a low-income apartment building in downtown eugene a few years ago
02:54 PM roycroft: while doing the engineering studies of the ground so they could design the foundation for the building they discovered a very large chamber well underground, directly below the building site
02:55 PM roycroft: they got engineering to design a heat pump system where they could fill the chamber with coolant and store/extract heat from it as needed
02:55 PM roycroft: as i described above
02:55 PM XXCoder: nice
02:55 PM roycroft: so yes, i think you could go deeper instead of wider, as they did exactly that
02:56 PM Tom_L: probably not practical for residential
02:57 PM roycroft: i believe the roi on such a system is over a shorter period than a standard pv setup
02:57 PM roycroft: so if you design it as part of the initial build, it might be very cost effective
02:58 PM XXCoder: new clickspring video is awesome
02:58 PM roycroft: if i ever stop emailing back and forth with our attorneys i might have time to watch it :)
02:58 PM Tom_L: was the chamber natural or man made?
02:59 PM roycroft: the one st vincent de paul found was natural, and fairly deep
02:59 PM roycroft: so they just took advantage of something
02:59 PM roycroft: making it much more cost effective
02:59 PM roycroft: wait
02:59 PM roycroft: is there a brand new one, xxcoder?
02:59 PM roycroft: or are you talking about the one he posted a few days ago?
02:59 PM XXCoder: yup. both clickspring and clickspring 2
03:00 PM roycroft: nice
03:00 PM roycroft: the last one i saw was from the 18th
03:00 PM XXCoder: well it come up today in public, think it was couple days ago for patreon
03:00 PM roycroft: the watchmaker's faceplate one
03:00 PM XXCoder: im a patreon but I usually wait for public
03:01 PM roycroft: i'm a patreon, not because i want early access to the videos, but because i like what he's doing and i don't have a google account so i can't help him by subscribing and doing a thumbs-up
03:01 PM XXCoder: yeah. and in addition, discord sundays chats
03:06 PM roycroft: ok, the "new" clickspring video is the one he posted to patreon on the 18th
03:06 PM roycroft: so i've seen it already, and yes, it's a good video
03:26 PM XXCoder: awesome one indeed
03:28 PM * travis_farmer[m] wonders if he had a Patreon, if people would help fund his adventures...
03:30 PM travis_farmer[m]: honestly, i don't think i put out enough videos to get a Patreon...
04:12 PM _unreal_: I'm working on designing a custom mini case for my OPI5
04:18 PM JT-Woodshop: yay no freezing wx for the next week... rain every day tho
04:18 PM Tom_L: all the frozen is nearly thawed here too
04:23 PM JT-Woodshop: road was pretty muddy on the way back in...
04:24 PM _unreal_: back in the 70's now
04:28 PM Tom_L: jt, what are the firmware and shrink branches?
04:28 PM Tom_L: is shrink the one for smoe?
04:28 PM XXCoder: we might be able to see sun on sunday
04:36 PM JT-Woodshop: yep
04:37 PM JT-Woodshop: well it is now, I was going to try and shrink the gui down to 800 x 600 but I started a new repo for that
04:38 PM _unreal_: So I'm trying to decide on how I want to design this shell for the OPI5
04:40 PM _unreal_: any suggestions?
04:40 PM _unreal_: My thoughts are micro tower design regardelss
04:45 PM roycroft: i would design it to fit in a din-rail mount inside the controller
04:46 PM roycroft: and i always design controllers to fit in rack enclosures, for maximum flexibility
04:46 PM roycroft: you can install a 19" rack anywhere
04:46 PM roycroft: or a rack stub
04:47 PM roycroft: and you can put wheels on a rack
04:47 PM _unreal_: not making it for din rain. makin it for ddesktop
04:52 PM _unreal_: roycroft, I'm thinking about designing a case kind of like this. Only with the MOTHERBOARD vertical like a standard desktop tower. https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.1f1e3c71a68adba62490a3ce2e43ca5c?rik=DpXIOmu%2bD46XOA&pid=ImgRaw&r=0
04:53 PM Rhine_Labs: Sup all
04:54 PM TurBoss: hello!
04:57 PM roycroft: i would probably just buy something pre-made if i were doing something like that
04:57 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, sup
04:57 PM roycroft: but if that's a project you're interested in, have fun!
04:57 PM _unreal_: roycroft, lol
04:57 PM _unreal_: roycroft, opi5 JUST came out on the market nothing exists
04:58 PM roycroft: oh
04:58 PM _unreal_: nothing nothing
04:58 PM _unreal_: thats my propblem
04:58 PM _unreal_: part of my problem
04:58 PM roycroft: so it's an opportunity for you to design and manufacture something and seize a huge part of the market for such enclosures
04:58 PM roycroft: since nobody is doing it yet
04:59 PM roycroft: hurry up and get designing!
04:59 PM roycroft: you're already at a disadvantage because it's already tomorrow in china, so you're a day behind!
05:03 PM _unreal_: I'm sure china are already on version 1.2
05:08 PM _unreal_: sucks my 3d printer is too small to make the shell
05:08 PM _unreal_: :(
05:08 PM JT-Shop: print a bigger one
05:22 PM t4nk_freenode: y0 _unreal_
05:35 PM t4nk_freenode: long time no speakyspeaky to
05:36 PM t4nk_freenode: how was jail?
05:56 PM XXCoder: what
05:56 PM XXCoder: https://www.reddit.com/r/Machinists/comments/zxpbhl/i_know_im_about_to_get_roasted/
05:56 PM XXCoder: lol
06:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://i.imgur.com/gZFTQlz.jpeg
06:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and you just have one part left to finish and it's Friday at 2pm
06:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and these are your last inserts
06:08 PM XXCoder: not much life in those tools
06:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://imgur.com/gallery/yRJ7ZYK from this thread
06:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 6.300" dia hole 14 ft deep
06:09 PM XXCoder: geez
06:15 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, jail?
06:16 PM _unreal_: got my internet fixed
06:16 PM _unreal_: well working now. I'm at least not being dropped every 5 min
06:33 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, ?
06:38 PM t4nk_freenode: hi ;)
06:38 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, so I'm trying to come up with a design case shell for this OPI5
06:38 PM _unreal_: https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.1f1e3c71a68adba62490a3ce2e43ca5c?rik=DpXIOmu%2bD46XOA&pid=ImgRaw&r=0
06:38 PM _unreal_: looking at that for insperation
06:39 PM t4nk_freenode: what's keeping you?
06:39 PM _unreal_: I'm already dsigning
06:39 PM _unreal_: looking for opinions
06:39 PM _unreal_: I'm thinking about making it with the opi5 sitting vertical
06:39 PM t4nk_freenode: I don't even know what that thing is
06:39 PM _unreal_: that photo its horizontal
06:40 PM _unreal_: orange pi 5
06:40 PM _unreal_: I just got mine in the mail the other day 16gb version
06:40 PM t4nk_freenode: expensive?
06:40 PM _unreal_: I got mine for $130 including PSU
06:41 PM _unreal_: USD
06:42 PM t4nk_freenode: that seems not too much, relatively
06:42 PM _unreal_: for a 16gb? LOL
06:43 PM _unreal_: few 16gb SBC's are less then $199
06:44 PM t4nk_freenode: (less THAN, not less 'then')
06:45 PM t4nk_freenode: but what would you do with it
06:46 PM t4nk_freenode: and what is the problem in making a case for it? just buy one, they're cheap enough
06:46 PM _unreal_: HAAAHAHAAH they dont exist yet.
06:47 PM t4nk_freenode: ? aliexpress is full of them, $9
06:47 PM _unreal_: find one that is NOT one of the only 2 desigsn sitting on 3D printing sites
06:47 PM _unreal_: orange pi 5
06:47 PM _unreal_: show me
06:48 PM t4nk_freenode: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005075074252.html
06:48 PM _unreal_: That has nothing to do with the photo I showed
06:48 PM t4nk_freenode: you asked for a case and claimed there were none
06:49 PM _unreal_: I said mini tower
06:49 PM t4nk_freenode: what are you on about man? what tower
06:49 PM t4nk_freenode: it's a box
06:50 PM _unreal_: https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.1f1e3c71a68adba62490a3ce2e43ca5c?rik=DpXIOmu%2bD46XOA&pid=ImgRaw&r=0
06:50 PM _unreal_: Thats for RPI
06:50 PM XXCoder: i w3onder how compitable rpi to opi5 is
06:50 PM _unreal_: not
06:50 PM XXCoder: hole pattern so on
06:51 PM _unreal_: OPI5 is bigger
06:51 PM _unreal_: its the most powerful arm on the market at the moment
06:51 PM t4nk_freenode: Orange Pi 5 Acrylic Case for Orange Pi 5 4 / 8 / 16GB RAM RK3588S Single Board Optional Cooling Fan Heat Sink
06:51 PM _unreal_: ?
06:51 PM t4nk_freenode: from my link
06:52 PM _unreal_: I'm not going with a case like that in anyway shape or form
06:52 PM _unreal_: I'm looking at the mini tower
06:53 PM t4nk_freenode: have you been sniffing glue again? ;)
06:53 PM Tom_L: from jail?
06:53 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
06:54 PM t4nk_freenode: also: you're gonna have a tough time going for a case without any shape or form.
06:55 PM XXCoder: can always take plastic parts from that, and 3d print stuff to turn it into nice tower with clear sides from that box
06:55 PM XXCoder: t4nk link can be raw materials not just use as is
06:56 PM t4nk_freenode: that plexiglass stuff always has something nice to it
06:56 PM Tom_L: machined aluminum billet
06:57 PM Tom_L: that's what saleae did
06:57 PM XXCoder: or that
06:57 PM Tom_L: 3d printed titanium
06:58 PM XXCoder: sls isnt easy to get and use, in least titanium using ones
06:58 PM Tom_L: costs quite a bit
06:59 PM t4nk_freenode: ooh btw, I recently bought a spool of tpu to print with on my ender
06:59 PM XXCoder: cheapest I ever saw that can do ti so far I know, is around 25k
06:59 PM XXCoder: usd
06:59 PM t4nk_freenode: works quite nicely
06:59 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, sounds about right
06:59 PM XXCoder: i want one dammit lol
07:00 PM XXCoder: i joined sls4all then later left because they are weirdly limiting themselves to nylon12 in black
07:00 PM XXCoder: also weirdly limited to specific boards etc for controllers
07:01 PM Tom_L: i think they said the one at the school was about 30k per run
07:05 PM XXCoder: each run? dang must be expensive machine
07:21 PM _unreal_: hum
07:38 PM roycroft: well dinner was cancelled tonight
07:38 PM XXCoder: nooo
07:38 PM XXCoder: you owe me dinner
07:38 PM roycroft: while my friends have been able to dodge covid-19 so far, three of them just contracted a case of rsv
07:39 PM roycroft: ironic that we've been so worried about covid, and that's what got them
07:39 PM XXCoder: yeah the trinity is why I wear masks when I go out.
07:39 PM XXCoder: rsv covid and flu
07:39 PM roycroft: we were going to a mexican venue that we have not visted in 3 years
07:39 PM roycroft: however, one of those friends gifted me a really nice bottle of mezcal this year
07:40 PM roycroft: so i am making nachos at home, and just blended a nice mezcal margarita :)
07:40 PM roycroft: i'm cancelling new year's eve as well
07:40 PM roycroft: even if they're starting to feel better, i don't want a house full of people recovering from rsv
07:41 PM roycroft: also, my mail finally arrived today
07:41 PM roycroft: and what i got from the boss was a bonus check, not my walking papers
07:41 PM roycroft: so i'll start the new year still employed
07:42 PM XXCoder: always nice
07:47 PM roycroft: and yeah, this is a good, refreshing beverage
07:48 PM roycroft: the mezcal is an artesanally made blend from a family owned/operated distillery in oaxaca
07:48 PM roycroft: it's 75% savory/smoky, and 25% sweet
07:48 PM roycroft: and very nice - very approachable for someone who is not accustomed to intensely smoky mezcal
07:49 PM roycroft: for scotch drinkers it would be kind of like a 75% islay/25% highland blend
07:49 PM roycroft: except it doesn't taste remotely like scotch
07:52 PM XXCoder: cool. im not much into alchol at all
07:52 PM XXCoder: the main reason why I cant remember when I last drank any is that theres no such event
07:56 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, any progress on your new cnc build?
07:56 PM _unreal_: I've done a little on mine
08:03 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, no, not at all really, done nothing
08:04 PM t4nk_freenode: got it in my head to want to make a battery charger first, and I'm not doing much there either
10:13 PM _unreal_: I'm wondering if I should design this case to be able to use standard PC card expansion slots. I'm just thinking about the M.2 port on the OPI2
10:13 PM _unreal_: OPI5
10:14 PM _unreal_: would be interesting to have the ablity to use at least one standard PCIE 4x slot.
10:24 PM t4nk_freenode: so what would you use the thing for anyway?
10:26 PM _unreal_: dont know yet
10:26 PM _unreal_: I got it for a really good deal being an early backer
10:28 PM t4nk_freenode: off your stock profits?
10:37 PM roycroft: "mr scott: have you always multiplied your estimated repair times by a factor of four?"
10:37 PM t4nk_freenode: aye
10:38 PM roycroft: "aye, captain! how else could i maintain my reputation as a miracle worker?"
10:38 PM t4nk_freenode: how else would you keep your status as a miracle worker
10:38 PM t4nk_freenode: orsth
10:38 PM roycroft: "mr scott, your reputation is intact"
10:38 PM * roycroft is obviously watching the third film right now
10:39 PM XXCoder: lol georgi certainly didnt like scott for a bit
10:39 PM roycroft: i watch star trek in chronological order by star date, and have been doing so for years
10:39 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe, me too
10:39 PM roycroft: but this is the first time i'm factoring in the films as long as the televsion episodes
10:40 PM roycroft: so i'm having to squeeze in six feature length films before i can get started on tng
10:40 PM roycroft: and i also watched the animated series for the first time as part of the cycle
10:40 PM t4nk_freenode: they overdid kirk's ass though
10:40 PM roycroft: which, of course, means i'll have to watch below decks as well when the time comes
10:41 PM t4nk_freenode: with a stuntman with two pillows inserted into his pants
10:41 PM XXCoder: orginial had bunch of socks
10:41 PM XXCoder: so thats a improvement I guess?
10:42 PM t4nk_freenode: the whole star trek thing has gone to hell though
10:42 PM t4nk_freenode: never managed to watch more than one ep of picard
10:43 PM roycroft: and the kelvin timeline is a whole separate thing
10:43 PM roycroft: there is no point trying to reconcile it with the original timeline
10:43 PM roycroft: so there are, in essence, two different star trek universes
10:44 PM t4nk_freenode: and then there was this other spin off with pike, never finished the first ep either
10:45 PM roycroft: anyway, this current track will last me at least a couple more years
10:45 PM roycroft: i don't watch an episode every day
10:45 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: How'd you like them dragging in Niven's Kzin?
10:46 PM t4nk_freenode: managed a couple of seasons of discovery but gave up on that too
10:46 PM t4nk_freenode: this burnham got on my nerves
10:46 PM roycroft: usually 3-4 episodes/week during the rainy season, and 1-2 episodes/week during the not so rainy season
10:46 PM XXCoder: the soft weapon
10:46 PM roycroft: so the cycle takes years
10:46 PM roycroft: the whole animated series was kind of meh to me, bleepshop
10:47 PM t4nk_freenode: never watched that either
10:47 PM XXCoder: animated series was cool in one way. more oppunities for nonhuman crew that tv show couldnt afford
10:47 PM roycroft: yes, it was a way to do cgi in the '70s
10:47 PM roycroft: and that show was SOOOOOOOOOOOO 1970s
10:47 PM roycroft: i mean
10:48 PM roycroft: the theme song
10:48 PM roycroft: if that is not a cross between the star trek theme and the love boat theme i don't know what it is
10:48 PM Bleepshop: yThat's one I wish someone could get the rights to and run with. Niven's Known Space stories.
10:48 PM XXCoder: bleep that would be awesome
10:48 PM XXCoder: so many good stories there. even if you only follow one guy
10:49 PM roycroft: larry niven is a great writer
10:49 PM Bleepshop: The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton. :D
10:49 PM roycroft: if i'm honest, though, i've not read as much of him as i might have
10:49 PM XXCoder: can choose various eras really
10:49 PM roycroft: i'm not a fan of jerry pournelle - i always thought he was a pompous arse
10:50 PM XXCoder: like "early" era of huge cities and colonies
10:50 PM roycroft: and niven's long-term collaborations with pournelle kind of turn me off to niven, even writing on his own
10:50 PM roycroft: it's not fair
10:51 PM roycroft: and i know i lose because of that attitude, but it's something i haven't found a way to get past
10:51 PM Bleepshop: Another writer I'd like to see adaptations of his work would be James P Hogan.
10:52 PM XXCoder: organleggers was predicted by niven
10:52 PM XXCoder: its rare but it does happen
10:59 PM roycroft: to answer the original question directly, though, i did not think much of the kzinti either way in the animated series
10:59 PM roycroft: they were just characters as humanoids are characters
11:00 PM XXCoder: honestly its weak copy of the soft weapon anyway
11:03 PM roycroft: and now mccoy is having his star wars bar scene
11:03 PM roycroft: but in this show mccoy does not shoot at all
11:03 PM roycroft: and, thankfully, there is no jabba the hut
11:03 PM XXCoder: guess that answers who shot first lol. in least on that one
11:03 PM roycroft: there is no question in star wars
11:04 PM roycroft: i have a copy of the original release :)
11:04 PM XXCoder: lol
11:04 PM roycroft: han shot first and i can prove it
11:04 PM XXCoder: third revision probably will hve greedo slip and shoot himself
11:16 PM Bleepshop: XXCoder: Unless the bartender shoots him first for misgendering it. LOL
11:18 PM Bleepshop: BBIAF. Stomach took over and now the kitchen has the lovely aroma of partially cremated bovine.
11:25 PM t4nk_freenode: roycroft, that 'Genesssssisss!?!?!?' character is just as annoying I'd say
11:26 PM t4nk_freenode: kind of reminds me of _unreal_ to hear it speak ;)
11:28 PM t4nk_freenode: 'box you say, price I say!'
11:28 PM t4nk_freenode: 'plexiglasssss!?!?!?!??!?!?! plexiglass FORBIDDEN!'
11:30 PM roycroft: yeah, but christopher lloyd is a klingon
11:30 PM XXCoder: not really needed, that t4nk
11:30 PM roycroft: which more than makes up for any other shortcomings in the film
11:30 PM roycroft: and i'm not defending the film per se
11:31 PM roycroft: after all, it's an odd-numbered film, and therefore indefensible
11:31 PM XXCoder: ah yes he was good klingon indeed
11:31 PM t4nk_freenode: it's all a bit weak really... but they'll always be classics
11:32 PM roycroft: the even numbered ones were good
11:33 PM XXCoder: I enjoyed most movies, though some I had to work on enjoying
11:33 PM roycroft: i mean, where else will you hear lines like "cap'n! there be whales here!", or "WHERE ARE THE NUCLEAR WESSELS!?"
11:34 PM XXCoder: like the god one
11:34 PM t4nk_freenode: Ricardo Montalban as Khan was hillarious.. with that glued-on chest for muscles
11:35 PM roycroft: yes, that was great
11:35 PM roycroft: but it was an even-numbered film
11:35 PM roycroft: so it was to be expected
11:42 PM * Bleepshop returns with steak soft tacos.
