12:10 AM * Bleepshop is probably pissing off the gaming couch potatoes with a reinstall of Debian 13.
12:20 AM Bleepshop: I'm pulling a little over a meg a second which is 99% of the available bandwidth. LOL
12:27 AM Bleepshop: Bleagh! monitor went to sleep during the update and now it looks freaking EGA. LOL
02:56 AM travis_farmer[m]: Merry Christmas! 3:52AM here... tree is lit, presents wrapped, house is cleaned, driveway is a skating rink... may everyone be blessed with good times, and good people! now, if i can only keep the darn cat from eating the fake tree....
05:08 AM JT-Cave: Merry Christmas
05:44 AM Tom_itx: Merry Christmas
05:51 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
06:56 AM JT-Cave: 9°F and both coops are above freezing :)
08:00 AM pere: hi
08:03 AM _unreal_: wholy hell its 45f here
09:03 AM Tom_L: sunny and 15°F here
09:15 AM unterhaus: Pennsylvania apparently doesn't deserve any sun
09:19 AM JT-Woodshop: sunny and 15°F here
09:49 AM Tom_L: did my christmas deed.. neighbor's basement sump was running pretty continuous finally causing an ice rink in my drive so i finally called the fire dept and they shut her water off. tried knocking with no answer and no cars around her place
09:50 AM Tom_L: pretty sure they have a broken pipe and nobody home
09:53 AM Tom_L: we get along about like roycroft and his neighbor kids
10:10 AM JT-Woodshop: hmm the Kubota side by side was a bit grumpy trying to start it
11:04 AM Bleepshop: JT-Woodshop: That's OK. I've been a bit grumpy in the cold myself. LOL
11:09 AM travis_farmer[m]: well, 12F at the moment, and overall i am pleased with how the holiday is going. got some new L.L.Bean slippers, an Amazon card, and this new-to-me laptop i am on. :-) the Amazon card will be handy for replacing the tool length sensor i killed. :-)
11:23 AM Bleepshop: 38F here which feels like spring after the last couple of days.
11:56 AM CaptHindsight[m]: eerily quiet all day yesterday and this morning until now around here, let the xmas noise begin
12:26 PM unterhaus: andy's response to the copyright "bug" is a thing of beauty.
12:26 PM unterhaus: Now we'll see if the washed up new wave singer wannabe has more ammunition
12:49 PM _unreal_: soooooo freaking cold down here
12:49 PM _unreal_: 42f
12:50 PM _unreal_: would not be so bad but considering it was 85 two days ago
01:08 PM XXCoder: merry xmas all
01:31 PM Bleepshop: XXCoder: It is. My housemate, her daughter and the daughter's boyfriend have all gone elsewhere so it's quiet. LMAO
01:37 PM XXCoder: ok
01:51 PM JT-Woodshop: crap I should have not put so much wood in the WonderWood it's 75°F in here
01:52 PM Tom_L: open the door... that will change quick
01:52 PM JT-Woodshop: yup
01:55 PM Tom_L: noticed the wood bowl sections.. lookin pretty good
01:55 PM Tom_L: glued up yet?
01:58 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (297KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/KJEAVMdBCCNBLMBeKSBrLIod/20221225_135753.jpg >
01:59 PM Tom_L: you're gonna need to find some larger strap clamps before long
01:59 PM Tom_L: are you gluing the flats first or all at once?
02:01 PM JT-Woodshop: yeah I need some bigger hose clamps
02:01 PM Tom_L: drier section of HD
02:01 PM JT-Woodshop: flats?
02:02 PM Tom_L: the flat side pieces
02:02 PM Tom_L: drier vent clamps
02:02 PM JT-Woodshop: they are only 4"
02:03 PM Tom_L: true
02:03 PM JT-Woodshop: hmm all sides are flat...
02:03 PM Tom_L: well the 90 deg angle ones
02:03 PM Tom_L: i just thought it might be easier to match the pattern that way
02:03 PM JT-Woodshop: brb
02:06 PM XXCoder: im going to be much closer to roy soon lol
02:06 PM XXCoder: see you guys later. gonna "enjoy" driving for 2 hours and constant vision waving
02:09 PM JT-Woodshop: have a safe drive
02:10 PM JT-Woodshop: the procedure is to cut strips then glue them together so in this case it's white oak, walnut, white oak, walnut and white oak
02:12 PM JT-Woodshop: then you cut them into parallelograms and rotate one side and glue them into blocks
02:12 PM JT-Woodshop: then you cut the pointy end and the other end off so now you have a rectangle or square block
02:12 PM Tom_L: what i was wondering is if you glued those blocks with the 90 deg side first or if you put them all in the ring and glued them
02:12 PM JT-Woodshop: then you cut the sides in my case 22.5°
02:13 PM JT-Woodshop: once all the blocks are cut to shape then you glue the ring up
02:13 PM Tom_L: didn't know how hard it was to keep them in place
02:14 PM Tom_L: glue likes to slide around
02:14 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (293KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/PftaDhXxXNtInfvXbcqyIUQB/20221221_163344.jpg >
02:15 PM JT-Woodshop: that's the blocks before I cut the 22.5° angles
02:15 PM Tom_L: yeah i saw those
02:15 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (404KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/fmPSfUuvNuYJHyqUTMBnCOpC/20221223_144419.jpg >
02:15 PM Tom_L: i see you got a clamp from your bud
02:15 PM JT-Woodshop: that's the fixture I use to cut the angles
02:16 PM JT-Woodshop: yep, it's pretty worn out... when ever the snow melts UPS will deliver some new ones to me
02:19 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (380KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/PAIrzSsVHhmkhpEaaAZYLBez/20221225_141850_4429204620344318560.jpg >
02:19 PM JT-Woodshop: that's a practice block
02:20 PM Tom_L: you gotta glue 2 more rings for the top & bottom?
02:20 PM JT-Woodshop: at least 2
02:21 PM Bleepshop: JT-Woodshop: Plus a lot of sawdust, several outbursts of expletives and a few splinters? ;D
02:24 PM JT-Woodshop: I'm pretty calm usually, I was told I'd invent new cuss words when I pulled the transmission out of the Corvette but it was really pretty easy
02:24 PM JT-Woodshop: I usually get splinters from handling firewood lol
02:27 PM Bleepshop: Lately whatever I'm working on gets offered a bath in kerosene and a blow dry with my lighter. Funny enough 95% of the equipment at work is now well behaved. LOL
02:31 PM Bleepshop: We've got a Raimann edger that they'll spend an hour trying to get it to run. I'll walk in, say "Kerosene Bitch." and put it through the startup sequence without a problem. LMAO
02:36 PM travis_farmer[m]: There, the busy part of the day is DONE! now i can work on more important stuff, like research, or ZZZZZZzzzzzzzz.......... (sleep)
02:40 PM Bleepshop: Got it! -17 / 0.6 / 12 on startup over kodi fullscreened on the local console. Disk access over a few megs is what blows the latency apparently. Hoping an SSD will cure that.
03:09 PM _unreal_: burrrrrrr
03:10 PM _unreal_: florida people are like TAZZ and water.
03:10 PM _unreal_: WHEN IT COMES to cold
03:11 PM travis_farmer[m]: in weather you feel to be cold, i go out in a T-shirt ;-)
03:11 PM _unreal_: hence I left MAINE because I hate cold weather
03:11 PM _unreal_: years ago
03:12 PM _unreal_: My daughter is wrapped under many blankets hehe..
03:12 PM travis_farmer[m]: just picking on you, nothing personal ;-)
03:12 PM _unreal_: what sucks is the house has no heat
03:12 PM _unreal_: its a florida house
03:13 PM travis_farmer[m]: setup a rack of computer servers... i have one in my bedroom for my website, and it puts off some heat
03:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: any flammable home has the potential to be heated
03:50 PM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (332KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/aRDLeTvPDOqhkVeNuqpuQpxn/20221225_155006.jpg >
03:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: an 8-sided hexagon
04:17 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], anything will burn if you get it hot enough
04:21 PM Plaid: When LCNC starts, using axis. What's the red box indicate?
04:21 PM Bleepshop: _unreal_: Rub 2 vacationing coeds together and you won't care that it's cold? ;D
04:28 PM * Bleepshop is cleaning up to be able to access the old CNC PC.
04:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: are you suggesting that he burn his house down for warmth?
04:49 PM Loetmichel: CaptHindsight[m]: No idea if santa has been to town. I am emjoying a hard earned few days off and dont care about the whole gifting spiel.
04:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I see nothing
04:52 PM Loetmichel: well, i have promised my sister to visit her tomorrow so we'll see what happens then.
04:53 PM Loetmichel: (got out of visiting my wifes family thankfully)
04:54 PM _unreal_: Loetmichel, "lucky break"
04:55 PM _unreal_: ok just tossed the ham into the oven
04:55 PM _unreal_: just pulled a mini sat. apart I had gotten. its some kind of microwave system
04:55 PM Loetmichel: yeah, well. First few days off since april.
04:55 PM _unreal_: but the insides have a bunch of cool parts
04:56 PM _unreal_: RIGHT NOW IS the only time of year I get off
04:56 PM Loetmichel: i am actually savouring the tranquility
04:56 PM Loetmichel: i meant: including the weekends
04:57 PM _unreal_: had my MMTLP dividend played. I likely would be retired as of a week ago. but its a bigger issue then the FTX bs. mmtlp is estimated to be a $330 billion scam at this point. and its the GOV/SEC/FINRA along with the hedgefunds that are the scam artists.
04:57 PM Loetmichel: drove close to 20000km since april to visit my sister and my wife alternating.
04:58 PM _unreal_: hum well theres a few KM for ya
04:59 PM Loetmichel: yeah, well: happens if you have a sister which had a stroke that lives 230km from you and your wife bought a house 430km away and needs a bit of help rennovating.
05:01 PM Loetmichel: on the plus side: really chopped my "to read" audiobook list down being on the highway between 9 and 15 hours every weekend
05:44 PM _unreal_: trying something
05:45 PM _unreal_: I just installed a new WIFI adapter for this PC
05:45 PM _unreal_: and internet seems to be much better
05:59 PM _unreal_: wow hands down what a differnce.
06:00 PM _unreal_: I'm not being dropped. so the main issue I was having WAS that the usb wireless card I was using has issues or just stupid low power
06:49 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: grrr im out of 4-40 screws
06:50 PM * JoseIgnacioRomer forces some M3 screws through a 4-40 die
07:02 PM roycroft: so we tied our all time high temperature for the day today
07:02 PM roycroft: since i got back from visiting friends earlier today i've been working out in my yard in shorts and a t-shirt
07:03 PM roycroft: it sounds like our low for the day was warmer than _unreal_'s high for the day
07:04 PM roycroft: and tomorrow will be the return of the deluge
07:10 PM Bleepshop: Oops. Broken upgrade. Re-install debian and try again.
07:11 PM * Bleepshop was trying to upgrade the old machine from 11 to 13 and forgot to check the starting version was actually 11.
07:11 PM Bleepshop: I think it was 10 or maybe even 9. LOL
07:12 PM Bleepshop: Backed up the machine configs remotely before starting though.
07:14 PM roycroft: with debian, you really need to upgrade one major release at a time, and be sure to upgrade to the last minor release of the previous version before doing each major release upgrade
07:14 PM roycroft: if you do that diligently, you have a 50% chance of succes
07:16 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: I'm using JT's 11>13 guide after installing a clean 11.
07:16 PM Bleepshop: It's been working all weekend so I'm not too worried.
07:20 PM * roycroft decrees that at 5pm local time on december 25th all christmas music must cease and desist until the next marketing season
07:21 PM roycroft: and i am not discriminating against the orthodox christian religions who use the julian calender
07:22 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: You forgot to add 'in no less than 360 days' just so we get some freaking relief. LOL
07:22 PM roycroft: they are not caught up in commercialized sentimentalism like western christianity are
07:22 PM roycroft: for you radio hosts who have a weekly show that airs after 5pm
07:23 PM roycroft: you had last week to play that stuff
07:23 PM roycroft: it's time to move on
07:26 PM * Bleepshop just uses the Clockwork Orange soundtrack for X-mas music. >:)
07:26 PM roycroft: since the composite nail gun i was going to buy is out of stock indefinitely, i just bought a vinyl cutter with that money
07:26 PM roycroft: that should be fun
07:28 PM roycroft: i have wanted one for a long time, and was going to get a cricut or silhouette, either of which would probably do fine mechanically, but both of which have sucky, proprietary software
07:28 PM roycroft: so i got a bigger one that can be driven by inkscape
07:32 PM roycroft: it also cost me less than a cricut or silhouette
07:33 PM roycroft: i guess it costs a lot of money to lock down a machine so that folks can't use it as they wish
07:46 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Being a complete dick always costs more than you think it should. ;D
07:48 PM roycroft: the cricut is moving towards not having a desktop app at all
07:48 PM roycroft: most of the models are already bluetooth only
07:49 PM roycroft: and the intent is to have a phone app as the only interface
07:49 PM roycroft: the phone app having to call home every time you use it, of course
07:49 PM roycroft: so yeah, i'm going to start doing graphic design work on a tiny phone screen
07:50 PM roycroft: cricut also will not use standard type 1 or tt fonts
07:50 PM roycroft: it only uses its own, and you only get a handful with the bundled software
07:50 PM roycroft: you can 'rent' other fonts from cricut
07:51 PM roycroft: folks do get around it by doing their design work with other software and exporting it to svg, exporting the characters as vectors, not fonts
07:51 PM roycroft: but that has its own issues and complications
07:53 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: And it's easier in the long run to just ignore the proprietary, locked-down, overpriced boxes of crap.
07:56 PM roycroft: yes
07:56 PM roycroft: i'm glad i did
08:29 PM roycroft: i just had to turn the ac on in my office
08:29 PM roycroft: i didn't figure on needing to do that until march
08:47 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: That's what you get for cooking ramen noodles on a PDP-11/70
08:50 PM Bleepshop: That and a big bill from the power company. LOL
08:54 PM roycroft: my office is tiny and there are three computers in it
08:54 PM roycroft: and i have to keep the door closed, because my cat would wreak havoc if she got in
08:55 PM roycroft: but i can usually turn the ac off from mid-november until early march
08:58 PM roycroft: but on the other hand, the heat is turned off everywhere in my house and shops
08:59 PM roycroft: what i really need is a heat pump that can store all the excess heat from my office and distribute it to the rest of the house as needed
09:36 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Install a transom vent and a vent low in the door?
10:14 PM Bleepshop: Crap! I need a SATA power tap because this box has 0 floppy connectors and 0 ATA molex plugs and I need 5V from the box to trigger the peripherals on the table. Like the lights and monitor.
