12:18 AM roycroft: nice
12:27 AM roycroft: i just did my mail merge for the mailing we're doing next week
12:27 AM roycroft: our database is kind of wonky, so mail merges are always "interesting"
12:27 AM XXCoder: yay
12:27 AM roycroft: i want my weekend to myself - i'm tired of doing work for the non-profit in every spare moment
12:27 AM roycroft: so i decided to give the mail merge a go tonight, hoping to make decent progress
12:27 AM roycroft: but it's all done :)
12:27 AM * roycroft has a weekend now
12:27 AM roycroft: for the first time since october
12:27 AM roycroft: i got half a weekend last week, sort of
12:30 AM Plaid1: I realized after the fact there were some adjustments pots on it, and maybe one of them would adjust it around the problem. But with the torn cable, that's no longer an option.
12:31 AM XXCoder: yeah not very easy to fix that
12:31 AM XXCoder: unless base is soldered and easy to connect to
12:31 AM XXCoder: then you could just swap em with wires
12:32 AM Plaid1: I'd consider that if I could ever get the encoder wheel off :P
12:44 AM Plaid1: I think they press fitted this encoder wheel into place, and I'm going to have to grind the wheel off
12:45 AM XXCoder: ot termal fitting
12:48 AM Plaid1: Yeah, possible
12:50 AM Deejay: moin
12:56 AM randy: morning
03:08 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:15 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:34 AM Tom_L: morning
04:42 AM Deejay: hey there
04:45 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning
04:54 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:20 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:29 AM JT-Cave: nice I just tried to boot up to a gentoo live cd and now the pc won't boot up to anything
07:30 AM travis_farmer: odd...
07:31 AM travis_farmer: motherboard failure?
07:33 AM JT-Cave: the fans come on and the dvd drive makes a noise but nothing else and it worked fine until I tried to boot from the gentoo live cd
07:34 AM JT-Cave: no bios at boot up
07:34 AM travis_farmer: could be a cpu or memory failure...
07:36 AM sensille: or showing the bios on a different video output
07:36 AM travis_farmer: true...
07:37 AM unterhaus: my fedex package apparently went over a cliff in the ice storm yesterday, "no delivery scheduled"
07:38 AM JT-Cave: hmm analog output works but the hdmi is dead
07:38 AM travis_farmer: unterhaus: or the fedex driver "lost" it
07:38 AM unterhaus: I think they lost the fedex driver
07:38 AM unterhaus: they fedex driver that was dumping packages in the woods marked them as delivered
07:39 AM unterhaus: look up "alabama fedex driver dumped packages" that was a big pile of packages
07:40 AM travis_farmer: i saw it on the news
07:40 AM JT-Cave: hmm I think the gentoo cd trashed my m.2 drive
07:41 AM travis_farmer: JT: or it reset your BIOS to some sort of failsafe
07:41 AM JT-Cave: I can get to the bios now with the analog video cable plugged in
07:43 AM JT-Cave: can not open console root is locked
07:45 AM travis_farmer: dunno... i have never had a system fail in such a way...
07:46 AM JT-Cave: I'll just reload the os, not much on that pc just monitor the chickens
07:46 AM travis_farmer: do you have backups?
07:47 AM JT-Cave: yup, there was only a couple of programs on there
07:52 AM JT-Cave: hmm chance of snow on monday here
07:53 AM travis_farmer: as soon as my "help" is out of the shower (father took the day off), we will head out to mount the snowblower and cab
08:10 AM sensille: is there a simple tool to get started with modbus/vfd, before i dive into configuring linuxcnc?
08:11 AM JT-Cave: none that I know of
08:13 AM sensille: of course one side is labeled +/- and the other A/B :-/
08:15 AM travis_farmer: usualy, A = + and B = -
08:19 AM sensille: "TX+/RX+ or D+ as alternative for B" (wikipedia)
08:20 AM rmu: sensille: there is a bunch of modbus tools like pymodbus, qmodbus, ....
08:21 AM rmu: pymodbus has a REPL https://pymodbus.readthedocs.io/en/latest/source/library/REPL.html
08:26 AM * travis_farmer heads out to work on tractor... in the snow...
08:34 AM sensille: nice, this looks like a response
08:51 AM sensille: where to go from here? mb2hal?
09:01 AM unterhaus: my 90 y.o. neighbor just fell down removing snow. Now I feel like I have to go out and watch him
09:01 AM unterhaus: wasn't easy to get him standing again, but he's back at it
09:25 AM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (270KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/yHYMzSNDmekpnYkemjxlGpOW/20221216_092510.jpg >
09:46 AM unterhaus: JT, what diameter is that?
09:51 AM JT-Shop: 15"
09:52 AM * JT[m]1 uploaded an image: (247KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/fuZOXTXWUQMLxvrNkgSDhvXk/20221216_095156.jpg >
10:06 AM roycroft: yay! it is friday!
10:08 AM JT-Cave: yay! it's my day off
10:13 AM JT-Shop: and dang I lost networking in the wood shop but I can boot up to a live cd and it works
10:19 AM roycroft: it's frosty here this morning
10:19 AM roycroft: -2
10:21 AM roguish[m]: sunny and cold here. still low 30's
10:21 AM roycroft: it's sunny here, too
10:21 AM roycroft: it's almost always sunny when it gets below freezing
10:21 AM zephyr9900: roycroft where is "here"
10:22 AM roycroft: eugene oregon
10:22 AM roguish[m]: celebrate the 75th birthday of the transistor....
10:22 AM zephyr9900: A dusting of snow and just below freezing in Milwaukee WI
10:22 AM roycroft: and since you're relatively new here, you should know that i abandoned those silly, archaic fahrenheit units a long time ago
10:23 AM roycroft: yeah, that was just a few days ago
10:23 AM roycroft: and today is beethoven's birthday
10:23 AM zephyr9900: I didn't give units:-)  As an engineer i prefer C but in order to communicate with the rest of my family I need to use both systems
10:24 AM roycroft: i'm originally from chicago, btw, so i have a sense of the climate in milwaukee
10:24 AM zephyr9900: My wife doesn't like it when the frig display is in C
10:24 AM * JT-Shop will take the 15" disc to the industrial park Monday and take a dust cut all the way across
10:24 AM roycroft: it's not all that different to chicago - both are on the western shore of lake michigan, and not too far apart
10:25 AM roycroft: what kind of jigs have you made for the disc sander?
10:26 AM roycroft: when i bought mine the first thing i did was take the table off and drill and tap 4 holes along the centerline of the table lengthwise
10:26 AM roycroft: and then i started making auxiliarry tables out of mdf that would bolt down
10:33 AM JT-Shop: gotta get to sand first but very interested in looking at your jigs
10:33 AM roycroft: the one that's the most interesting, i think, is for my kumiko jigs
10:34 AM roycroft: it's just a piece of mdf with a small rectangular lip parallel to the disc, right at the disc end
10:34 AM roycroft: i make the angle jigs for the kumiko pieces and rebate the bottom of the jig where it faces the disc
10:34 AM roycroft: so the kumiko jig indexes on the auxiliary table and i get the angle perfect
10:35 AM roycroft: i don't know if i've taken any pics of that stuff, but i do plan on spending some time in the shop this weekend, and i do need to tidy around that area, so i can take some pictures then if i haven't already
10:36 AM roycroft: i also made a table that has a 45 degree angle jig on it
10:37 AM roycroft: and iirc i can flip that jig over and does 90 degrees as well
10:37 AM roycroft: the sander's table has a miter gauge slot, but i don't find that terribly useful
10:40 AM JT-Shop: I wonder if the miter slot could be used to position jigs, mine has a 90° miter slots
10:41 AM JT-Shop: I have no clue what the perpendicular slot would be useful for...
10:41 AM * JT-Shop gets ready to head out
10:42 AM roycroft: i had considered using the miter slot to index my jigs, but the miter slot isn't always parallel to the disc
10:42 AM roycroft: so drilling and tapping the holes seemed a better idea
10:42 AM roycroft: on the auxiliary tables i drill the screw holes a bit oversize, so i can align the table to the disc easily
10:43 AM roycroft: and i've seen those perpendicular miter slots but never figured out how people use them
10:43 AM roycroft: but again, they're not necessarily all that perpendicular
10:44 AM roycroft: and with most of those disc sanders, as soon as you tilt the table the alignment to the disc changes anyway, so even if yours is parallel/perpendicular when the table is at 90 degrees, it is likely not when you tilt to 45 degrees or so
10:44 AM roycroft: unless you have something like an old, heavy oliver
10:46 AM roycroft: but to make up a corollary to jer schmidt's law, if the machine you bought isn't perfect, make it adjustable
11:22 AM travis_farmer: snow blower and cab is mounted on the tractor, as are the tire chains... just have to mount the cab doors, and it is ready for snow :-)
11:30 AM sensille: damn. i killed the water pump for the spindle
11:35 AM sensille: i only find replacements that go directly into the water. is that normal?
11:35 AM sensille: the current one has two hoses
11:38 AM zephyr9900: I only know about coolant pumps for machining fluids. I think most are centrifugal pumps and the pump part is submerged but the motor is not
11:39 AM roycroft: pond pumps are submersible
11:40 AM roycroft: i don't know how much volume you need, but there are some small pumps made for brewers that would work well - they have magnetic impellers, and the parts that come in contact with the liquid are pretty much inert, so they won't corrode
11:41 AM roycroft: https://www.chuggerpumps.com
11:41 AM roycroft: i have several of those
11:41 AM CloudEvil: There are two designs of submersible pumps - one has a magnetically isolated rotor, and the other relies on 'sealed for life' bearings.
11:41 AM zephyr9900: Well actually I think the coolant pump for my TIG welder is like a gear pump so it is positive displacement.
11:41 AM CloudEvil: (for ponds)
11:43 AM zephyr9900: coolant pump https://www.ebay.com/itm/255275709153?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1KTH4t5W9QWilct06neksmA27&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=255275709153&targetid=&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9018717&poi=&campaignid=17597089569&mkgroupid=&rlsatarget=&abcId=9300988&merchantid=116336382&gclid=CjwKCAiAy_Cc
11:43 AM zephyr9900: BhBeEiwAcoMRHIrk3RvV1jbxSWOVddu5ElgsciB4GnpDSWfnkhS8CNCI9-tTWOOxjxoC10AQAvD_BwE
11:43 AM roycroft: the caveat with the magnetic impeller pumps is that they must be primed and gravity fed
11:43 AM sensille: the original is similar to this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001616381817.html
11:43 AM sensille: lowest end
11:44 AM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N41FXSG
11:44 AM roycroft: i have one similar to that for my router table spindle
11:44 AM CloudEvil: Adding additional filtration if it's not in tehre is always a good plan
11:45 AM sensille: replacement i'm looking at: https://www.ebay.de/itm/204159724757
11:45 AM roycroft: if you have a two-chamber sump then a filter is not as important
11:45 AM roycroft: your return goes into one chamber, the swarf settles in that, and only the liquid moves to the other chamber, where the pump inlet is
11:46 AM zephyr9900: I think this is for the spindle motor so you don't need to worry about swarf
11:46 AM roycroft: it's like a miniature settling pond for a mining operation
11:46 AM sensille: yeah, spindle cooling
11:46 AM roycroft: it shouldn't matter in that case
11:46 AM CloudEvil: indeed
11:46 AM roycroft: although a filter is always wise
11:46 AM CloudEvil: Swarf in your spindle coolant is indicative of a bad day
11:47 AM roycroft: especially if it's a chinse spindle
11:47 AM roycroft: you never know what's going to flake off the spindle sleeve
11:47 AM CloudEvil: True though.
11:47 AM zephyr9900: I think if you have a cheap pump like that you should have some kind of flow indicator
11:47 AM roycroft: they use "stainless steel" jackets, which aren't always stainless steel
11:48 AM CloudEvil: Flow switch also perhaps wouldn't be a terrible plan
11:48 AM CloudEvil: Or a pressure switch on the output
11:49 AM roycroft: or a temperature sensor on the outside of the spindle
11:49 AM sensille: next time i get a 230V pump directly and don't try to run a 24V pump on 230V :-)
11:49 AM roycroft: my version the two chamber sump one that i linked to above can run on 120vac or 240vac
11:50 AM roycroft: i use the latter, since that's what i feed the vfd on the router table
11:50 AM sensille: ShenZhenShiWuPengYiDianZiShangWuYouXianGongSi sounds like a trustworthy seller :)
11:51 AM * roycroft avoids aliexpress whenever possible
11:51 AM sensille: ebay
11:51 AM roycroft: i've only had one order ever from there that's worked out well
11:51 AM roycroft: with ebay i have buyer protection, and i've never been burned buying from there
11:52 AM roycroft: i've had to file several disputes, but always got my money back
11:52 AM sensille: i very seldom have problems with aliexpress
11:52 AM sensille: buyer protection there works well, too
11:52 AM roycroft: yes, but it can take months to find someone who speaks english and can understand your dispute
11:53 AM sensille: the few cases i got i always got my money back within days
11:53 AM roycroft: i've had to do chargebacks with my credit card because aliexpress customer service can't understand the problem i'm describing
11:53 AM roycroft: they're very nice, and apologetic, and reassuring
11:53 AM roycroft: but they don't do a bloody thing to resolve the problem
11:53 AM roycroft: i don't want them to be very very sorry that i'm having a problem
11:53 AM roycroft: i want them to fix the problem
11:57 AM sensille: i seldom buy >$10 on aliexpress, so i can live with a full loss
11:58 AM roycroft: it's not my preferred vendor
11:58 AM roycroft: but it's also not for me to dictate the vendors others use, so if it works for you, that's great
12:20 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight[m] YOU JERK
12:24 PM roycroft: did you just spend a lot of money, solarwind?
12:26 PM solarwind: No, it's just my way of saying hi
12:26 PM roycroft: aah
12:27 PM * roycroft hasn't heard that greeting used before, and wonders if it's perhaps a gta thing
12:28 PM roycroft: folks on the west coast are pretty polite
12:28 PM roycroft: a vancouverite would be more likely to greet someone with "i'm sorry" than "you jerk"
12:34 PM solarwind: roycroft yes but deep down inside, you know who I _really_ am
12:54 PM solarwind: New low cost AC servo kits: https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/e6-series-ac-servo-motor
12:55 PM solarwind: $250 for a complete 1,000W system!?
12:56 PM solarwind: The T6 are rebranded Leadshine EL6. I wonder who the OEM for these E6 servos is. Because this price is absolutely bananas
01:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: buy 4, and get 3 good ones!
01:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Encoder Type: 17 bit incremental, magnetic encoder
01:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: odd number of bits :p
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Frame Size(mm) 80 x 80
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Shaft Diameter(mm) 19
01:07 PM sensille: ugh. mb2hal has a very limit path for the serial device, too short to use a by-id path?
01:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/index.php?route=product/product/get_file&file=3067/E6M80-1000H2A2-M17S.pdf
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 6 control modes:speed control,posi on control,torque control,torque/speed
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: control, speed/posi on control,torque/posi on,torque/speed/posi on mixed
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: control
01:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: also Modbus
01:12 PM roycroft: i think it's time to get a yule gift for myself, and i've decided to finally get a composite nailer
01:13 PM roycroft: it seems that of all the ways folks hold down work on a cnc router, using composite nails is the fastest, and most flexible way to do it
01:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: doesn't work on my granite base
01:15 PM roycroft: no, i should think not
01:15 PM roycroft: but my router will not have a granite base
01:15 PM roycroft: although if you use a spoil board, which i shall use, then the base doesn't matter
01:16 PM roycroft: as long as you have a way of securing the spoil board on the base
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/index.php?route=product/product/get_file&file=3067/E6_Servo_Full_Manual.pdf have you seen all the wires?
01:16 PM roycroft: of course, the one i want is out of stock at the vendor with the best price
01:17 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight[m] yeah, that looks quite decent actually
01:17 PM solarwind: don't care about modbus or speed/torque unless it has the bandwidth for it
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 17bit 、23bit (func ons as a mul -turn absolute encoder a er adding a ba ery)
01:19 PM solarwind: I'm checking if it has analog input for velocity/torque. Not sure if the model they sell has that
01:19 PM solarwind: yeah 17/23 bit is also what Leadshine has for their encoders
01:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I didn't see analog in
01:20 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight[m] the diagram you linked shows it
01:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: not everything is in the doc
01:20 PM solarwind: top left of the middle diagram
01:20 PM solarwind: it shows analog input
01:21 PM solarwind: I just don't know if the model they sell has that specific capability. There may be multiple versions like Leadshine (some are step/dir only, some models have analog input as well)
01:22 PM solarwind: If it does though, I'm insta-buying it
01:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Analog speed/Torque... (full message at <https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/libera.chat/68702cdd1c87049577783f4d710d3dddaa00bdb7>)
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: needs investigating
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yes, unclear as to which features each model actually has
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they tend to just list everything
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: vs features per model
01:24 PM solarwind: yeah
01:25 PM solarwind: these are the -RS models, just need to know if that model suffix supports analog input
01:25 PM solarwind: I'm going to email them. They respond pretty quick.
01:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lies or ancient Chinese secret?
01:25 PM solarwind: I'll guinea pig test these for y'all and report back
01:25 PM solarwind: They've been pretty honest with me
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: also https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/t6-series-1000w-ac-servo-motor-kit-3000rpm-3-19nm-w-brake-17-bit-encoder-ip65-t6-rs1000h2b3-m17s
01:27 PM solarwind: Yeah the T6 is leadshine EL6 series
01:27 PM solarwind: They're only step/dir input, but they're solid
01:27 PM solarwind: They auto tune, have vibration suppression, work as expected
01:27 PM solarwind: Those are a solid no nonsense choice. I have one to test
01:28 PM solarwind: Very good price. Like as of this moment, the lowest cost _good_ servo kit that does its job well
01:28 PM solarwind: Next step is to test these new unknown brand "E6" kits and see if they can take that spot because they're _significantly_ cheaper
01:29 PM roycroft: ywah, so amazon are $40 more than the other guys, but the other guys are out of stock
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so whats the diff between the T's and E's?
01:29 PM roycroft: so i guess no present for me
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: 1 x Servo Driver Debugging Cable
01:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: E series says 5 pole, T series says 10 pole
01:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 2 x the poles of the other
02:05 PM XXCoder: roycroft: honestly if you use grinate base you would not be able to just screw down wood into router surface
02:06 PM roycroft: sure you could
02:06 PM roycroft: you drill the granit base and epoxy in some threaded inserts
02:07 PM roycroft: and then you screw down your spoil board using those inserts
02:09 PM XXCoder: possible I guess
02:09 PM XXCoder: quite a bit of work
02:09 PM roycroft: but you only have to do it once
02:22 PM unterhaus: fedex finally delivered my stuff. Disappointment is that it's only a vacuum :)
02:26 PM roycroft: aren't you i the middle of a big snowstorm?
02:26 PM roycroft: ups have cancelled all deliveries in the dakotas and montana, and holding shipments going west in hodgkins il
02:26 PM roycroft: i thought pennsylvania was part of that storm
02:27 PM roycroft: perhaps fedex can do where ups demur
02:28 PM roycroft: my winch power cable was supposed to be delivered today, and i was planning on using the winch this weekend, but the shipment is stuck back east
02:28 PM unterhaus: we had bad weather yesterday, today is fine
02:28 PM XXCoder: depends on which company forces workers to work anyway
02:29 PM unterhaus: I imagine fedex endangered all their workers yesterday and still didn't deliver anything
02:29 PM roycroft: that's ok
02:29 PM unterhaus: usps was here though
02:29 PM roycroft: because fedex workers regularly endanger all the parcels they handle
02:30 PM roycroft: so turnabout is fair game
02:30 PM unterhaus: I'm reading about the ethics of mink oil written by a leatherworker
02:30 PM roycroft: i hope he's not in support of mink oil
02:31 PM roycroft: if so he's a leathery old fart
02:31 PM unterhaus: the difference between say, bunny leather and mink pelts is something that escapes me
02:32 PM unterhaus: I went to tandy the other day and they had leather from all sorts of innocent little disney characters there
02:33 PM unterhaus: oh, but we draw the line at mink
02:34 PM zephyr9900: and Dalmatians
02:34 PM unterhaus: nah, had that :)
02:34 PM XXCoder: what I'd look at is if mink is endangered at least once before by hunters for fur
02:35 PM unterhaus: mink is farmed still, I believe
02:35 PM unterhaus: There was a mink farm near where I grew up, long rows of cages
02:36 PM roycroft: it is still farmed, but not humanely, for the most part
02:36 PM unterhaus: I wonder why they can't make oil from making cow leather
02:37 PM XXCoder: virtually only leather products I own is 2 leather coats, both from cow.
02:37 PM XXCoder: ah yes wallet. also cow
02:37 PM zephyr9900: belts?
02:38 PM XXCoder: no
02:39 PM unterhaus: neetsfoot oil is also an animal product, but we don't know which one so it's okay
02:40 PM unterhaus: it is from cows, so now we know
02:44 PM unterhaus: "neat" is an old word for cow
02:44 PM XXCoder: neet?
02:44 PM roycroft: moo
02:45 PM unterhaus: I previously misspelled it, it's "neat"
02:45 PM XXCoder: ahh ok lol
02:45 PM XXCoder: btw neet is japanese word for jobless person who just stays home all time. aka me
02:45 PM unterhaus: hey, me too
02:46 PM unterhaus: I looked up when you should use neatsfoot oil and I think I'm going to get some mink oil and cover the label
02:51 PM roycroft: what is your use for the oil?
02:52 PM roycroft: neatsfoot oil is used when machining aluminium, btw
02:52 PM roycroft: i prefer wd40, myself
02:53 PM roycroft: and i use neatsfoot oil on leatherwork
02:53 PM roycroft: it's one of several oils/waxes i use on leather
02:54 PM unterhaus: I'm making some leather hinges
03:00 PM unterhaus: specifically, I'm making some of these tube blocks https://imgur.com/g8tMe3D
03:02 PM unterhaus: apparently we have some leather conditioner for baseball gloves, I'm going to try that
03:12 PM unterhaus: might have to get a leather stamp for Unterhausen Machine Tool and Die
03:19 PM XXCoder: whats those tube blocks for?
03:19 PM unterhaus: holding bike frame tubes in a vise
03:20 PM XXCoder: ahh interesting
03:20 PM unterhaus: you can easily crush a good tube
03:20 PM unterhaus: these blocks keep it from happening
03:22 PM unterhaus: nobody is selling the blocks right now. Thinking about it. But I wanted a second set so I don't have to move them from the garage to the basement and back all the time
03:22 PM XXCoder: looks fairly simple to make
03:22 PM XXCoder: just drill a block then cut it in half
03:23 PM XXCoder: then bunch of finish work then leather attachment
03:23 PM unterhaus: something like that
03:24 PM unterhaus: a friend gave me some forstner bits, so I can make the holes straight
03:26 PM XXCoder: cool
03:27 PM XXCoder: interesting tools
03:46 PM roycroft: if you're looking for leather tools, brucejohnsonleather.com is a good place to find rare/vintage/unusual tools
03:47 PM roycroft: he has an email list you can subcribe to, and you'll get an email once or twice per month with a link to all the new tools he's added
03:49 PM roycroft: i still haven't decided how i'm going to brand my wood products
03:50 PM XXCoder: burning brand?
03:50 PM roycroft: i was originally going to get a proper brand that would attach to a roofing soldering iron so i could burn it into the wood
03:50 PM roycroft: but i'm thinking maybe i'll just do it with a laser head on my 3d printer
03:51 PM roycroft: another option would be to get a leather stamp, and inlay a piece of leather into the products where the brand goes
03:51 PM roycroft: i really like that idea, but it might be too much extra work
03:51 PM XXCoder: fancy one would be brass pressed plate
03:51 PM XXCoder: you'd need to make presses to do that
03:51 PM roycroft: that might be good for some things, but not the small items that i'll mostly be making
03:52 PM roycroft: like the bottom of lamp - a brass plate would not fit well there
03:52 PM roycroft: on a piece of furniture, sure
03:52 PM XXCoder: yeah it'd depend on what its fr
03:53 PM roycroft: although i'd be more apt to engrave a sheet of brass than stamp one
03:53 PM * travis_farmer is currently getting dumped on by a snow storm...
03:54 PM roguish[m]: lucky guy
04:01 PM travis_farmer: as for branding, i once thought it would be neat to mill a brass plate on my CNC router, and make a torch-heated branding iron that way
04:02 PM roycroft: for some things, i really like the idea of a leather logo patch that i would inlay into the wood
04:03 PM roycroft: i could make a stamp for that and a punch to cut out the blanks, and make them really quickly
04:03 PM roycroft: but where i have to apply a really small brand, a laser might be best
04:04 PM roycroft: my logo, both icon and text, doesn't render well in tiny tiny sizes
04:04 PM roycroft: speaking of which, i just got another round of proofs from my designer today
04:04 PM roycroft: we're getting pretty close to final designs
04:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how much oil does one mink hold?
04:13 PM XXCoder: all oil a typical mink has
04:13 PM unterhaus: stamps and brands are cheap on etsy
04:15 PM unterhaus: even the established brand makers only charged $100
04:36 PM roycroft: first i need to get my logo done before i think about how to apply it
04:36 PM roycroft: i've been trying to get that done for 2 years
04:36 PM roycroft: i finaly found a graphics designer who actually does work
04:37 PM roycroft: in 2 weeks with her i've made more progress than 2 years with other designers
05:01 PM roycroft: it's the weekend!
05:02 PM roycroft: i have a meeting at 5, and after that the weekend should be mine
05:02 PM roycroft: for the first time in months
05:09 PM unterhaus: I'm afraid to find out how much a graphics designer charges
05:09 PM unterhaus: worried they charge as much as I do
05:11 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: drink up and celebrate
05:23 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, but are you worth it?
05:29 PM roycroft: my meeting is at a pub
05:29 PM roycroft: so i'll be starting the weekend with a refreshing beverage

05:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: let me find a comparison to the rpi4, they are about 4x the poswer
05:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: power even
05:44 PM XXCoder: not too bad

05:46 PM XXCoder: had to use rpi for over a month
05:47 PM XXCoder: well i let people know in other channel
05:47 PM XXCoder: few there thats looking for single board pcs to shave off power use
05:48 PM XXCoder: power is very expensive there
05:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it also has 4x arm M0 micros inside
05:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if we can use them for stepping no Mesa would be required

06:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://imgur.com/gallery/SabH8pT
06:55 PM XXCoder: yeah very imprssibve indeed
06:55 PM XXCoder: pretty sure its made from 2 blocks rather than one
06:55 PM Tom_L: what makes you think that?
06:56 PM XXCoder: no way to start cutting :D and well wire is wider than that essentally zero gap
06:56 PM Tom_L: why would they advertise zero tolerance machining then?
06:57 PM XXCoder: hah
07:00 PM XXCoder: I bet similiar would be possible if we had true 4d mill

07:27 PM XXCoder: smart to make 2
07:27 PM XXCoder: cheap steel expensive setup
07:42 PM mrec_: I just received my new linear scales, it's best to order them from alibaba it seems; 3 axis including cover 5um for 150$ plus 20$ shipping
07:42 PM mrec_: this time with index signal
07:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 🎉
08:26 PM * roycroft tries to order his stuff from 'murica
09:02 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight[m] the pole count inconsistency seems odd, I'll ask about that in the email. The torque and other specs are identical to Leadshine motors
09:49 PM * Bleepshop does the Happy Dance with a 7i96s in his grubby little mitts.
09:52 PM Bleepshop: Now to figure out how I'm going to mount a RPi, the 7i96s, all 4 drivers and the power supplies in the 4U rack box.
09:52 PM Tom_L: i ran out of room in my box
09:53 PM Tom_L: but swapping spindle motors gave some back to me
09:53 PM Tom_L: got rid of all the sherline driver stuff and put the vfd outside the box
09:54 PM mrec_: > i ran out of room in my box....
09:54 PM mrec_: me too with the 7i96s :-(
09:55 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Control1.jpg
09:55 PM Tom_L: both those on the door were just for the sherline spindle motor
09:55 PM Tom_L: and they're gone now
09:55 PM roycroft: i got a din rail bracket for a rpi
09:56 PM roycroft: that makes it fit nicely
09:56 PM Tom_L: the heatsink has all 4 drivers behind it
09:56 PM Tom_L: in line with the fan airflow
09:56 PM Tom_L: they don't even get warm though
09:56 PM roycroft: the vfds for my router won't be installed inside the control panel
09:57 PM Tom_L: mine is on the wall beside that cabinet
10:00 PM Tom_L: i did use din rail for the mesa cards
10:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: the specs are never accurate, especially any in English
10:08 PM Bleepshop: I've got DIN rails, DIN terminal blocks and wiring raceways. I told the boss that if I didn't get some random parts to make my machine look more like the ones at work inside that the ones at work would start looking like mine inside. Then I showed him a picture of my controller stuffed into an old fire alarm panel. LMAO
10:08 PM Tom_L: Bleepshop, what os you using on the rpi4?
10:09 PM Bleepshop: Was gonna go the debian 13 route.
10:09 PM Tom_L: 12
10:09 PM Tom_L: ?
10:09 PM Tom_L: bookworm?
10:09 PM Tom_L: trixie is 13 and i don't know anyone using that yet
10:10 PM Bleepshop: Crqap, I'd have to find the link now. It's an 11>12>13 upgrade path.
10:10 PM Tom_L: bookworm is out there
10:10 PM Tom_L: i had a link somewhere
10:10 PM Tom_L: i've got buster, bullseye and bookworm on sd

10:19 PM Tom_L: there was another site...
10:19 PM Tom_L: and i don't recall where i got the preempt-rt kernel build
10:20 PM Tom_L: you can get bookworm as an img
10:21 PM Tom_L: i should take better notes.. mine are scattered all over several sd & ssd
10:23 PM Tom_dev: https://raspi.debian.net/tested/
10:23 PM Tom_dev: there's a few more
10:24 PM Tom_dev: pretty sure that's where i got the one i'm using
10:27 PM Tom_L: don't recall where i got the preempt kernel
10:27 PM roycroft: hmm, the forecast has changed again
10:28 PM roycroft: now it's calling for snow next week, like it was previously
10:28 PM Tom_L: weather does that
10:28 PM roycroft: and sub-freezing temperatures
10:28 PM Tom_L: Bleepshop, there are also daily builds but they have no gui
10:30 PM roycroft: i onece built a pre-empt buster kernel for the rpi
10:30 PM Tom_L: i may have
10:30 PM Tom_L: i just don't recall
10:31 PM Tom_L: if you update buster now, it breaks usb etc
10:31 PM Tom_L: unless they fixed it
10:32 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: It got to a tropical 32 degrees here today... Fahrenheit... LOL

10:34 PM Tom_L: i don't think my 64bit bookworm is preempt-rt yet
10:35 PM Bleepshop: It's currently 11 at the local weather monitor, 17 outside the shop door and I've gotten it from 40 to 52 in here in the last 45 minutes with the woodstove.
