12:06 AM Plaid: TIL: hm2_7i96s.0.7i77.0.1.analogena-invert inverts the outputs and it also inverts the logic signal to enable the the analog out signals.
12:15 AM Plaid: Also, I've had my first thing resembling jogging on my Z axis!
12:27 AM sensille: is it possible (or even well known) that home switching equipment like netgear-switches and/or the wired ports of a wlan router can delay packets for >10ms from time to time?
12:28 AM sensille: i know the rcommendation is to have a back-to-back connection to the fpga board
12:29 AM Plaid: posible, yes. I don't know the probability level though
12:31 AM sensille: i was chasing maybe one occasion per hour
12:32 AM sensille: back-to-back i hadn't had a problem overnight
12:32 AM Plaid: switches aren't real time devices, even good ones are all about queuing
12:33 AM sensille: queueing, yes, but that would require other substantial load
12:35 AM Plaid: I'm not heavy into LCNC yet, I'm doing my first build still. But I'd follow the suggestions if you think you're having a problem
12:35 AM jpa-: sensille: perhaps packet loss and retransmission delay?
12:36 AM jpa-: though if you are observing this with linuxcnc that usually transmits every 1 ms, that wouldn't explain it
12:37 AM sensille: no, i've seen the exact packets >10ms delayed (i added hw-timestamps to the packet content)
12:37 AM sensille: i was afraid it happens on the host
12:38 AM jpa-: you could open the device and see if it uses a hardware switch chip between the ports in question; some devices have hardware switch for most ports but may have one or two ports that go through the CPU instead
12:39 AM sensille: tanda wifi router is under suspicion
12:39 AM sensille: *tenda
12:40 AM sensille: dpll.phase-error-us is jumping between -1us and +1us

02:01 AM Deejay: moin
04:31 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning, it was a bit cold in my room this morning. i had opened my window to cool the room down (my website servers make a lot of heat), but forgot to close it before i fell asleep... really hated to throw back the covers to get out of bed. :-D
04:48 AM Tom_L: morning
05:08 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:19 AM Deejay: afternoon
06:24 AM travis_farmer: lol
09:39 AM JT-Cave: I should start some fires...
09:45 AM JT-Shop_ is now known as JT-Shop
09:47 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:12 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:15 AM unterhaus: tplink ethernet card should work with mesa, right?
10:15 AM JT-Shop22 is now known as JT-Shop2
10:16 AM JT-Shop2: what is tplink?
10:21 AM unterhaus: it's a brand. Maybe tp link
10:22 AM unterhaus: okay tp-link
10:22 AM sensille: the actual controller used is probably more important. realtek?
10:23 AM unterhaus: I am not sure the actual controller is guaranteed
10:24 AM JT-Shop: that could be important
10:24 AM unterhaus: tp-link says they are the biggest supplier of wlan devices in the world
10:24 AM JT-Shop: I recall Peter saying one controller will not work and realtek seems to be iffy lately
10:25 AM unterhaus: I thought it was intel
10:29 AM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/debian-11-eth.html
10:29 AM JT-Shop: just have to turn off IRQ coalescing for intel
10:30 AM unterhaus: okay
10:30 AM unterhaus: I do have one of the tp-link cards working, I wanted to get another
10:30 AM JT-Shop: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/46911-mesa-hm2-hm2-7i96s-0-error-finishing-read?start=180#259080
10:30 AM unterhaus: but all those companies change controllers if they can save a penny
10:31 AM JT-Shop: you mean if they can save 0.001 cent
10:33 AM unterhaus: that thread seems to imply it's the kernel, not the cards
10:34 AM unterhaus: I'm not sure intel is safer
10:34 AM unterhaus: it's only $15, but I'd like to avoid the frustration of experimenting
10:35 AM JT-Shop: I've tried 4.x, 5.x and 6.x kernels on my dev pc with a realtek ethernet and I get a long ping time from time to time
10:35 AM unterhaus: at least with intel they probably tell you what you are getting
10:40 AM unterhaus: costs $30 instead
10:41 AM unterhaus: JT, have you tested intel cards?
10:43 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: I had a problem with network spikes on my machine turns out it was me leaving WiFi turned on whilst using Ethernet. nothing since i disabled wifi
10:45 AM unterhaus: the reason I'm getting a card is so I can have 2 wired ethernet. I wonder if wired causes similar problems
10:45 AM JT-Shop: I don't think I have an intel NIC's
10:46 AM JT-Shop: for wired connection to my LAN I just use a pcie nic
10:47 AM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008FAELF2
10:47 AM unterhaus: now that I think about it more, the cheap card is for the internet, so I don't care about realtime unless it somehow interferes
10:47 AM roguish[m]: TheMightyFozz: remember, it's a machine controller. disable everything that is not essential....
10:48 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: is there anything on your network that scans for devices? maybe the cnc is trying to do too many communication jobs at once.
10:48 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: I do that. I transfer my files via usb.
10:49 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: no problems when there's no network. :P
10:49 AM unterhaus: that's a real pain though
10:49 AM unterhaus: I think most people aren't having that problem
10:50 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: Also my machine is in the shed, right away from any network interface, so i don't really have any other option.
10:51 AM unterhaus: I have 3 wired ethernet ports in my shop, plus it's about 3 meters from the router
10:52 AM unterhaus: I'll have to check what nic is on the motherboard
10:52 AM roguish[m]: both my systems have network connections, but I don't touch 'em while machining..... and I can, and do, unplug 'em occasionally
10:53 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: Ahh Could JT's problem be interference along the network cable?
10:53 AM roguish[m]: again, machine controllers, not media centers.....
10:54 AM JT-Shop: it's a common problem with Realtek and I have the same issue on 3 different pc's all with short cat6 patch cords
11:12 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: I remember when realtek wouldn't install at all.
11:16 AM JT-Cave: I see the 2.9 docs are starting to use section titles long as my truck again...
11:17 AM JT-Cave: wow can't even find the programming section in 2.9 where g m o codes used to be
11:20 AM JT-Cave: finally found it...
11:20 AM travis_farmer: i was just going to point it out... but you got it :-)
11:38 AM JT-Cave: hmm can't seem to build a rip on another debian 12 pc so it must be time for a nap
11:41 AM roguish[m]: banana bread is about 1/2 done..... another 30 min.
11:42 AM travis_farmer: email me a slice, roguish[m] ;-)
11:43 AM roguish[m]: blustery and rainy here today........
11:43 AM travis_farmer: sunny and cold, here
11:44 AM roguish[m]: storm is dumping lots of heavy snow in the mountains. Tahoe is loving it. although it's called
11:44 AM roycroft: it's sunny and cool here at the moment, but the rain is due to return shortly
11:44 AM roguish[m]: 'california cement' because it's so heavy.
11:44 AM roycroft: and we're at almost 150% of normal snowpack
11:45 AM roycroft: but still behind in precipitation for both the calendar year and the rain year
11:45 AM roycroft: the city will be coming buy with their leaf sucker upper trucks next week
11:46 AM roycroft: today is the first day we're permitted to pile leaves out on the street
11:46 AM roycroft: it is supposed to rain most of today and all of tomorrow, so it may be challenging getting them out there
11:46 AM travis_farmer: must make driving fun
11:46 AM roycroft: that's why the window for piling them up is so small
11:47 AM roycroft: my leaf blower is pretty good, but it is not as effective as one might like with wet leaves
11:47 AM travis_farmer: anyone ever just drive down the street, blowing through the leaves? ;-)
11:47 AM roycroft: and it's a hand-held model, so i'll become weary after using it for a while
11:47 AM roycroft: i'd like to have gotten a backpack unit, but could not justify the additional cost
11:47 AM travis_farmer: free back massage with every use
11:48 AM roycroft: we pile them by the curb - they are in the parking lane, not the driving lane
11:49 AM travis_farmer: we went with a backpack model and it does kick up most of the wet leaves
11:50 AM roguish[m]: I just let em dry and blow into the neighbor's yards...
11:50 AM travis_farmer: lol
11:56 AM unterhaus: I suppose I could test network latency with and without internet
11:56 AM unterhaus: can you disable a PCIe card without removing it from the system?
11:57 AM * travis_farmer ponders going out in the cold to work on his machine...
11:59 AM roycroft: i'm going to make some more chopsticks today
11:59 AM roycroft: i think i'll hook up power to my winch today to make sure it works
12:00 PM travis_farmer: what makes a good chopstick? aren't they just dowels with blunt tips?
12:01 PM roycroft: no, i make octagonal ones
12:01 PM travis_farmer: oh, ok
12:01 PM roycroft: bridge city toolworks have a chopstick maker
12:01 PM roycroft: it's expensive, but it includes a small block plane that i've wanted for my kumiko work
12:02 PM roycroft: a while back they had a big sale on the chopstick maker, such that it as only about $50 more than the cost of the block plane itself, so i popped for it
12:02 PM roycroft: but the jig that is bundled with it is for making chinese chopsticks (5mm tip)
12:03 PM roycroft: i much prefer japanes chopsticks (2mm tip), so i hadn't used it much, but they just had a sale on the japanese chopstick jig, and it arrived yesterday
12:03 PM roycroft: i figure that chopsticks are a good way to use up really small wood scraps that i can't use for anything else
12:03 PM roycroft: i just need to make blanks 7mm square and 270mm long
12:03 PM travis_farmer: Hmmm, i can't even eat with the cheap "dowels" from the china-diner ;-)
12:04 PM roycroft: anyway, i'm making a bunch for holiday gifts
12:04 PM roycroft: simple ones are really fast to make
12:05 PM roycroft: like five minutes/pair
12:05 PM travis_farmer: sounds like fun :-)
12:05 PM roycroft: it's actually fun to use
12:06 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqjAfcX4Jjs
12:07 PM roguish[m]: that's a bit overdone.......
12:08 PM roguish[m]: I made a pair of sticks years ago in a woodshop. long, fairly thick ones to use in cooking......
12:11 PM * travis_farmer heads out to shop to fire up the diesel heater...
12:15 PM roycroft: i'll want to eventually make chopsticks with inlay towards the fat end
12:16 PM roycroft: but for now i'll just make them with scrap wood
12:16 PM roycroft: if i can make a pair in 5 minutes out of scraps that are essentially free, put them in a linen bag that cost about a dollar, and sell them for $16/pair i'll do ok
12:21 PM roycroft: and keep in mind that i bought the chopstick maker primarily for the block plane, so the chopstick jig itself wasn't much of an investment
12:28 PM CloudEvil: :)
12:48 PM travis_f[SHOP]: Hmmm, connected my new USB to RS485 device, and LCNC starts with no errors, but will not control the VFD (hy_vfd). dmesg reports the device on /dev/ttyUSB0 and i have marked it as such in the HAL file. the device has LEDs for TX and RX and nothing blinks when i try to control the VFD. thoughts?
12:56 PM roycroft: you have have to either change a jumper or a programming parameter on the vfd to enable the rs485 interface
12:56 PM roycroft: so double check that stuff
12:58 PM travis_f[SHOP]: it worked before. the USB to RS485 i had before died, this is a new, but supposedly "industrial" model
12:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: list your Debian gripes with LCNC here please https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/47640-what-are-the-problems-with-using-debian-for-a-machine-controller
12:59 PM travis_f[SHOP]: i have no debian gripes...
12:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I don't expect Debian to fix any. It is just useful to know what the problems are.
01:02 PM travis_f[SHOP]: Hmmm, i will try removing the termination resistors. i did shorten the wire length for the RS485 connection. maybe they are not needed for 12" runs
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: does the new device actually work? Try a scope on the TX RX
01:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: try the UCB to 485 on something else simple, make sure it works and is configured properly
01:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: UCB/USB
01:08 PM travis_f[SHOP]: yeah, it worked in the house when i was playing with it yesterday
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: QC in China is often just : did the customer notice and complain about it not being right
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: travis_f[SHOP]: do any serial connections work with the VFD?
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is the VFD flaky?
01:10 PM travis_f[SHOP]: hmmm, i hope not. it worked before fine... now you have me worried about the VFD
01:11 PM JT-Shop2: roflmao...
01:12 PM JT-Shop2: john@woodshop:~$ synaptic-pkexec

01:12 PM JT-Shop2: This incident has been reported.
01:12 PM JT-Shop2: wonder who it reported to lol
01:17 PM travis_f[SHOP]: something i noticed, the spindle-at-speed led indicator in qtdragon lights immediately after setting the spindle speed...
01:18 PM roycroft: an unmonitored email account, most likely
01:19 PM roycroft: which probably has thousands of those reports in its inbox
01:20 PM travis_f[SHOP]: interesting, i created a loop-back on the serial device (RS485, RS232, TTL serial), and LCNC responds exactly the same...
01:21 PM roycroft: that's good news
01:21 PM roycroft: because it points to the usb thingamabob as the problem, and not to the vfd
01:22 PM travis_f[SHOP]: yeah, sadly i paid $35 for the industrial version
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: debugging Chinese made devices can be "fun"
01:25 PM travis_f[SHOP]: trying an autopsy...
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there is a PCIe LPT card for <$10 that is made so poorly by some vendors that some don't even have any IO working, some are just ins and no outs or vice versa
01:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: most working USB to serial devices use the FTDI converters
01:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but the Chinese vendors are using some cheap mcu instead that almost works
01:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: with the IC marked as being a FTDI
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://hackaday.com/2016/02/01/ftdi-drivers-break-fake-chips-again/
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and also this ^^
01:34 PM * roycroft has mesa cards with rs485 interfaces on them, and intends to use those to control his vfds
01:38 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: my spindle vfd is running via 485 modbus. works fine. uses a usb-485 adapter.
01:39 PM travis_f[SHOP]: bad news.... just checked the device with a scope (got output), and used the Arduino IDE (has a handy serial console i am familiar with) and with a loopback, i got data through the device. so the device does work fine. must sadly be my VFD
01:53 PM travis_f[SHOP]: now i am screwed, as i really don't have the money for another VFD... my machine is dead :-(
01:54 PM CloudEvil: Are you very sure the baud/settings are correct
01:54 PM roycroft: are you sure you have tx and rx from the usb thingamabob to the vfd wired properl?
01:55 PM travis_f[SHOP]: how would they change from working before?
01:55 PM travis_f[SHOP]: yes roycroft, i tried both polarities
01:57 PM roycroft: do you have a reference signal wire as well as a and b?
01:57 PM roycroft: have you measured the voltages?
01:57 PM roycroft: it could be that the vfd is more voltage sensitive than spec, and your old interface put out sufficient voltage to drive it, but the new one does not
01:58 PM travis_f[SHOP]: sorry, i am out of mental capacity for this machine right now. perhaps tomorrow i will be thinking clearer
02:07 PM travis_farmer: sorry, i have Autism, and when i get frustrated, bad things tend to happen. nothing caused by anyone here, just circumstance.
02:15 PM roycroft: knowing when to walk away from a problem for a while is a sign of wisdom and maturity
02:16 PM travis_farmer: "<roycroft> do you have a reference signal wire as well as a and b?" yes, i do have a reference wire, even though my previous device had none (tried without as well)
02:16 PM travis_farmer: something i have never been called is wise or mature ;-)
02:36 PM roycroft: well the rain has started
02:36 PM roycroft: besides the futility of trying to use a leaf blower in the rain, i'm just not interested in standing outside in the rain today
02:36 PM roycroft: so i guess i'll hang out in the shop today
02:37 PM roycroft: i usually don't put my leaves out for the leaf sucker-upper anyway - i usually just let them lie on the ground and i mow over them in the spring, but there seems to be an unusual amount of them this year
02:40 PM travis_farmer: that is because i off-loaded my leaves on your lawn ;-)
02:42 PM roycroft: are you the person in pennsylvania?
02:42 PM * roycroft forgets who here is from there
02:42 PM travis_farmer: no, Maine
02:42 PM roycroft: oh
02:42 PM roycroft: maybe it's unterhausen
02:42 PM roycroft: never mind then
03:26 PM unterhaus: I unload my leaves on my close neighbors
03:27 PM unterhaus: in my front yard, they are mostly from the neighbors upwind, and our backyard leaves stay mostly in our yard
03:27 PM unterhaus: I leave them in place to save the crawly critters
04:12 PM roycroft: it is pouring down rain right now, and the sun is shining
04:13 PM roycroft: there is a very pretty double rainbow in the east
04:13 PM roycroft: but other than that it is not pleasant to be outdoors today
04:18 PM * JT-Shop2 tries to get inspiration for some segmented bowls for popcorn
04:18 PM roguish[m]: have had a little over 1.5 inches so far today.........
04:18 PM XXCoder: could you make sides of popcorn pattern
04:19 PM XXCoder: then cut the extrude and glue into bowl sections and turn it
04:19 PM XXCoder: or any pattern really, "extruded" so you can cut it into multiple copies of sides for bowls
04:20 PM JT-Shop2: I have paduck, walnut, zebra wood, white oak, red oak and purple heart
04:20 PM Tom_L: https://www.chairish.com/product/6441058/mid-20th-century-hand-turned-popcorn-bowl-by-cliff-johns
04:21 PM Tom_L: somebody will need to be inspired for that
04:21 PM roguish[m]: roycroft:France beat England.......
04:21 PM XXCoder: wow that site a lot of popups
04:21 PM Tom_L: none here
04:21 PM XXCoder: is it just me or is bowl part off center?
04:21 PM Tom_L: blocker blocked 15 though
04:22 PM XXCoder: got 3, all asking me if it could notify me, and begging me to sign in

04:27 PM JT-Shop2: hmm where is my segmented bowl book?
04:29 PM Tom_L: the licensing thing looks like it's turning into a real pita
04:30 PM JT-Shop2: yup
04:30 PM JT-Shop2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Srr0fTnaHdQ
04:30 PM Tom_L: is it for documentation or something else?
04:30 PM JT-Shop2: no clue
04:31 PM Tom_L: andy seems a bit fed up with it
04:31 PM JT-Shop2: aye, can you blame him?
04:31 PM XXCoder: what licensing thing/
04:31 PM Tom_L: not in the slightest
04:32 PM travis_farmer: i am wondering too, XX
04:35 PM Tom_L: huh, never seen a dowel maker
04:35 PM Tom_L: about halfway thru
04:35 PM roycroft: what licensing thing is this?
04:36 PM JT-Shop2: it's on the devel mailing list
04:36 PM * roycroft hasn't checked that in a while
04:36 PM roycroft: i can do that, so no need to expound further here
04:36 PM Tom_L: no point in starting a thread on it here too :)
04:36 PM XXCoder: wha about me and travis? lol
04:37 PM Tom_L: look it up
04:37 PM Tom_L: :)
04:37 PM travis_farmer: :-(
04:37 PM * roycroft notes that he's not the one who brought it up :)
04:38 PM roycroft: my winch works, at least with no load
04:38 PM Tom_L: gonna try climbing a tree with it as a test?
04:38 PM roycroft: it's too miserable outside to put it on the pickup and pull something real
04:39 PM XXCoder: latest result 2013
04:40 PM JT-Shop2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjMd6XWr0Lw
04:40 PM JT-Shop2: I like the rubber band jig
04:40 PM XXCoder: yeah no idea where to find current mailing list
04:41 PM XXCoder: "look it up" is not very helpful
04:41 PM travis_farmer: well crud... got my interest picked... and now i gotta go get supper... :-( will never know what licensing thing it was...
04:41 PM Tom_L: gpl2 vs gpl3
04:42 PM Tom_L: can't mix em
04:42 PM JT-Shop2: wonder why
04:42 PM XXCoder: indeed. well forgot details but yeah
04:43 PM Tom_L: This is because both GPLv2 and GPLv3 are copyleft licenses: each of them says, “If you include code under this license in a larger program, the larger program must be under this license too.” There is no way to make them compatible.
04:44 PM Tom_L: https://opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/1777/why-is-gplv2-incompatible-with-gplv3
04:44 PM JT-Shop2: https://opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/1777/why-is-gplv2-incompatible-with-gplv3
04:44 PM JT-Shop2: lol
04:44 PM Tom_L: :)
04:44 PM Tom_L: that's got to be one of the stupidest things i've heard of
04:45 PM XXCoder: oh theres been more discussion on mascot
04:45 PM XXCoder: I dont think I ever uploaded vector art of it'
04:46 PM Tom_L: https://gplv3.fsf.org/wiki/index.php/Compatible_licenses
04:46 PM JT-Shop2: holy crap that's a huge steady rest
04:48 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i understand the issue
04:48 PM roycroft: it looks to me like once upon a time there was some code
04:48 PM Tom_L: you can't combine software from both licenses
04:48 PM roycroft: a long long time ago someone pulled some of that code and incorporated it into a linuxcnc file
04:48 PM roycroft: correctly attributing copyright
04:48 PM roycroft: then someone else altered the original code and claimed sole copyright
04:49 PM roycroft: and now is complaining about something emc did a couple decades ago
04:50 PM XXCoder: huh
04:50 PM * roycroft still thinks that the entire gpl, and everything gnu, is extremely harmful to the open source software community, and to software in general
04:50 PM JT-Shop2: I somewhat like the rim on that huge bowl
04:50 PM XXCoder: forum post says svg is allowed
04:50 PM XXCoder: when I try to upload it, it says not allowed
04:50 PM * JT-Shop2 agrees with roycroft on the gpl crap
04:51 PM roycroft: the bsd license and the mit license are fine
04:51 PM roycroft: gpl is the most restrictive, fascist license ever written
04:51 PM roycroft: and i am using the term fascist correctly here
04:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how dare you!
04:51 PM JT-Shop2: I use mit on all my stuff
04:52 PM roycroft: it's rarely used properly, but the gpl is a dictionary definition of fascism
04:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: says a commie :P
04:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you can't start throwing around facts like they are facts
04:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and they don't matter
04:53 PM roycroft: go fact yourself
04:54 PM JT-Shop2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjkzmmsYOs0
04:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what next are you going to quote some science now?
04:54 PM roycroft: anyway, do i have the gist of that copyright issue correct?
04:54 PM roycroft: it's a weird thread
04:54 PM roycroft: and i don't know all of the players, so i'm not sure where some of them are actually coming from
04:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: that singer from the 80's is starting trouble
04:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Adam Ant is complaining about copyright
04:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unless it is some fake made up Adam Ant
04:56 PM roycroft: we were just talkling about the '80s today
04:56 PM roycroft: at the grocery store
04:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but you have to admit it does fit Debian
04:57 PM roycroft: trying to decide where the late '70s sucked more than the early '80s or vice versa
04:57 PM JT-Shop2: Adam Ant is a cartoon character?
04:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: malicious compliance
04:57 PM XXCoder: my vector art uploaded https://forum.linuxcnc.org/show-your-stuff/32672-linuxcnc-logo?start=80#259152
04:57 PM roycroft: adam ant is/was a rock music performer
04:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the 80's only sucked for hippies
04:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if you were progressive it was a fun time
04:57 PM roycroft: keep in mind that the late '70s was the disco era
04:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh no, it was punk
04:58 PM JT-Shop2: yup I know about the singer but I thought there was a cartoon character too
04:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: disco was some racist plot
04:58 PM roycroft: punk music started in the late '70s, but it was pretty much underground until the '80s
04:58 PM XXCoder: lol my bro wanted to be punk
04:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: cultural reaaproriation of culture softening up the youth to later accept hip-hop
04:59 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop2, different spelling
04:59 PM XXCoder: no idea why as hes nearly as deaf as me
04:59 PM roycroft: if you weren't hanging out at the cbgb or a few clubs in london you probably did not experience any punk music until the '80s
04:59 PM XXCoder: mom told him nope and that was end of it
04:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: nope CBGB's was punk by the mid 70's
04:59 PM Tom_L: maybe somebody should just silence this complainer
04:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: earlier if you accept the New York Dolls
04:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: as punk
05:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I do find it amusing that the complainer is copying a copyright name
05:00 PM roycroft: i was listening to zappa in the mid-70s
05:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe he's just trolling
05:00 PM roycroft: irony is usually lost on that ilk
05:01 PM JT-Shop2: hmm one of my favorites Summertime
05:02 PM Tom_L: i wonder if that epoxy dulls the tools quicker
05:02 PM JT-Shop2: I was wondering that as well
05:02 PM JT-Shop2: I know wood is abrasive enough
05:02 PM Tom_L: reminds me of that bowl mold i helped andy with
05:03 PM JT-Shop2: did you notice the new version of mesact?
05:04 PM Tom_L: yes, glad you reminded me.. i'll get those out this evening
05:04 PM roycroft: some folks say that epoxy dulls cutters quickly
05:04 PM roycroft: but i don't know if those folks know what they're talking about
05:04 PM roycroft: many folks don't
05:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: wood cutting tools/
05:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ?
05:04 PM roycroft: that's the other thing they don't say
05:04 PM JT-Shop2: I had to rework the loadini.py completely to accommodate the 7i92T series of boards
05:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: epoxy on its own is not abrasive
05:05 PM Tom_L: was gone quite a bit of the day and forgot about it
05:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: soften that even soft steel
05:05 PM roycroft: no, but perhaps it gets gummy and causes the tooling to heat up
05:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: a soft more flexible epoxy can do that
05:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the cheap stuff is hard
05:06 PM JT-Shop2: after Curtis Lowe time to head inside
05:06 PM roycroft: since we all know what i think about "river tables" and the like, i obviously don't have a lot of experience machining huge tracts of epoxy
05:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: not very flexible
05:06 PM roycroft: i use it primarly, and almost exclusively, as an adhesive
05:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ever work with epoxy that has a little bit of wood in it?
05:07 PM roycroft: i've put wood dust in epoxy before
05:07 PM roycroft: so yes, i suppose i would have to say i have
05:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: an epoxy table with some wood
05:07 PM JT-Shop2: I've put micro balloons in epoxy
05:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: reclaimed epoxy furniture
05:08 PM Tom_L: i used to use those balloons in fiberglass resin for some things too
05:15 PM Tom_L: JT, definitely not dishwasher safe
05:17 PM XXCoder: roycroft: depends. I used to run nylon with glass and steel powder infusion
05:17 PM XXCoder: man it sure ate endmills well
05:18 PM XXCoder: only epoxy dunno if it would dull tool
05:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it was the glass
05:27 PM XXCoder: yeah not surpised lol
06:08 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:17 PM XXCoder: roycroft: lovely blondihacks video today
07:21 PM Plaid: I'm not sure on my encoders PPR, but it has an index on it. Is there any way I can use that to figure out the PPR?
07:22 PM CloudEvil: Rotate it one R, count the Ps.
07:23 PM Plaid: Is there any way to rotate it one index?
07:32 PM Tom_L: no numbers on it?
07:41 PM Plaid: renco 324599-03
07:42 PM Plaid: but I don't see any PPR markings
07:48 PM roycroft: i'm going to a concer tonight, and am actually just sitting down to dinner and watching blondihacks
07:48 PM roycroft: the show is just now starting
07:50 PM roycroft: tonight is the night of the two concerts at the same venue and i want to go to them both
07:50 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/39-pncconf/46987-gerber-408-retrofit
07:50 PM XXCoder: roy maybe some time lord can help you on that
07:50 PM Tom_L: 4k
07:50 PM Tom_L: Plaid,
07:51 PM roycroft: if i did not have season tickets to the eugene symphony i'd have gotten tickets to john craigie
07:51 PM Tom_L: possibly
07:51 PM roycroft: especially since i've heard the 9th performed twice before
07:51 PM Tom_L: you're missing it
07:51 PM roycroft: once by the chicago symphony, under the baton of sir georg solti
07:51 PM roycroft: it's hard to beat that
07:52 PM Tom_L: it would be a real hoot if i had the stick :)
07:52 PM roycroft: perhaps berliner philharmonik under karl böhm
07:54 PM roycroft: ok, blondihacks is definitely worth watching tonight
07:54 PM roycroft: just for "pilot point dewalt drills"
07:54 PM roycroft: i did not know of those
07:54 PM roycroft: now i have to find some
07:54 PM Tom_L: HD
07:54 PM roycroft: they're not even that expensiv3
07:55 PM roycroft: i've often thought of grinding drills to a profile like that, but it always ends up seeming like too much work
07:56 PM roycroft: especially for really small drills, which is where i need it the most
07:56 PM roycroft: for larger bores i can use a boring bar to get a flat bottom
07:56 PM roycroft: or a counterbore drill, of which i have a nice set
07:59 PM Plaid: Tom_L: Oooh, thanks. I'll try that out
07:59 PM Tom_L: https://www.renco.com/fileadmin/renco/1319497-20_Drehgeber_RENCO_en.pdf
07:59 PM Tom_L: not the exact one probably
08:00 PM Plaid: Yeah, I've read that one, but I haven't been able to find that part number anywhere. But I'll give 500/mm a spin, it seems like it's in the right ballpark from what I've read elsewhere
08:01 PM Tom_L: Plaid, that may be quad count
08:01 PM Tom_L: so 1k
08:01 PM Tom_L: should get you close from there you should be able to guess it
08:01 PM Tom_L: it's going to be a nice round number
08:02 PM Tom_L: 500 1000 1024 etc
08:03 PM Tom_L: https://cnczone3.rssing.com/chan-4789036/all_p1378.html
08:05 PM Plaid: Yeah, as long as I'm an interger factor off, it's much easier to do the math
08:30 PM Plaid: 500 seems to be right. It's close enough I need to fix my PID more...
