#linuxcnc Calendar

01:06 AM roycroft: i just watched part 3 of the new yorkshire workshop big cnc router build
01:16 AM roycroft: it's nice to see he chose linuxcnc to run the machine
01:16 AM XXCoder: yeah
01:16 AM XXCoder: love how he uses machine to make parts for machine near end
01:16 AM roycroft: i had never thought about using it as a precision grinder before
01:16 AM roycroft: well, probably semi-precision
01:16 AM XXCoder: close enough honestly
01:16 AM roycroft: for what he's doing, yes
01:16 AM roycroft: i just doubt it's accurate to tenths
01:16 AM XXCoder: i finished caught up on everything just now lol
01:16 AM XXCoder: yt was yeserday, rest of it today
01:16 AM roycroft: and i received the petition today
01:16 AM roycroft: i was looking forward to some time off so i could get other projects done
01:22 AM XXCoder: sounds fun
01:23 AM roycroft: i've made some progress on the drive gear for my y axis
01:23 AM roycroft: i was really going to work hard on finishing my router design over the next couple months, so i can finally start building it
01:24 AM roycroft: but now i don't know if i'll have any time to work on it
01:24 AM Deejay: moin
01:37 AM pere: I am looking at the "live cd screensaver lock" issue in <URL: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc-live-build/pull/17 >. JFYI.
01:49 AM mrec_: glass scales are almost installed... I'm waiting for some L shape and small aluminum square to fix the slider
02:47 AM pere: The translated linuxcnc documentation is now published on <URL: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/$langcode/ >, where $langcode is a language code like de, fr, it, es and nb. Not quite sure how many translations are available.
04:32 AM Tom_L: morning
04:56 AM mrec_: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/tlh/ not found
05:35 AM pere: mrec_: cool. must be a broken link somewhere.
05:35 AM pere: mrec_: where did you find the link?
05:37 AM pere: mrec_: note, if it was to be a langauge code, almost all are two letter codes.
05:37 AM pere: zh_CN is the only exception.
05:45 AM mrec_: just kidding ISO639-2 Language code Klingon; tlhlngan-Hol
05:46 AM pere: mrec_: you can solve it -> <URL: https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/linuxcnc/ > :)
05:46 AM mrec_: I prefer to file a bugreport and bother everyone about it ^^
05:48 AM pere: mrec_: any success with that approach? do you recommend it over fixing things yourself?
06:21 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:23 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:23 AM mrec_: I'm not good with klingon I'm sure there are experts out there
06:24 AM mrec_: 2 sliders left to install until my machine has glass scales
06:24 AM mrec_: I can't wait for that
06:38 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:44 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:23 AM roycroft: i'm assuming the south hills are pretty snowy
09:25 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:48 AM roycroft: i was wrong - i just saw a thin deposit of snow on my gazebo roof, so we did get a dusting here
11:05 AM mrec_: https://www.haascnc.com/productivity/product-options/ls-2.html
11:05 AM mrec_: hmm any idea why they do not recommend it for 3d surfacing or 3d interpolation?
11:06 AM mrec_: bending issues?
11:11 AM mrec_: my linear scales cost 150$ including shipping; haas starting price 18.895$ I'm getting close
11:27 AM roycroft: i should get some glass scales for my mill
11:27 AM jpa-: are your linear scales 1 micron resolution?
11:27 AM roycroft: the dro is great, but i'm using igaging scales, and they eat through batteries like crazy
11:27 AM roycroft: to the point that i haven't used the dro in years, because i got tired of installing new batteries every time i used the mill
11:32 AM roguish[m]: roycroft: how long scales do you need? I have 2 Nikon scales, 800mm.
11:33 AM roycroft: not that long
11:33 AM roycroft: but i'll check when i get a chance
11:33 AM roycroft: and right now i only have scales on x and y
11:33 AM roycroft: y is prety short - 200mm at most
11:34 AM roycroft: x is probably 600mm or so
11:34 AM roycroft: but those can be cut pretty easily, i think
11:34 AM roycroft: how much do you want for them?
11:35 AM roguish[m]: not sure yet. similar units on ebay are up around $300-$400 each. but I'm not greedy
11:36 AM roycroft: that's probably more than i want to pay for scales
11:36 AM roycroft: i do hope to convert the machine to cnc eventually
11:37 AM roycroft: so the dro thing is "temporary"
11:37 AM roycroft: which is why i got the dirt cheap igaging scales in the first place
11:37 AM roycroft: but that was a waste of money
11:38 AM roycroft: there are chinese glass scales that go for around $100 each which folks say work reasonably well, and that's probably more what my budget tells me makes sense
11:38 AM roycroft: and i'm not asking you to sell the nikons for that
11:49 AM Tom_itx: roycroft, these calipers i linked from amazon are genuine...
11:50 AM roycroft: good deal
11:50 AM Tom_itx: i know because i registered them with mitutoyo
11:50 AM roycroft: i figured they would be, since there were no marketplace sellers for that same kit
11:50 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
11:52 AM roycroft: i have to go meet with our attorneys in a bit :(
11:52 AM * roycroft finds this whole thing extremely distasteful
11:54 AM roycroft: so this is what i'd probably get for the mill:
11:54 AM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125528574039
11:54 AM roycroft: or something similar
11:54 AM roycroft: it's worth investing a couple hundred dollars getting the dro back working
11:54 AM roycroft: but not $800
11:55 AM roycroft: i'm not sure i'd buy from a seller with such little feedback, but the seller is in the us, and their feedback score is 100%
11:55 AM roycroft: so maybe it would be worth taking a chance
12:07 PM travis_farmer: i was just about to head out to my shed to work on my machine, and the clouds opened up with a blizzard... perhaps i will hang inside and do some research instead, with a hot cup of coffee :-)
12:08 PM roycroft: we had a light dusting of snow today
12:09 PM roycroft: so of course, most of the schools outside of town are closed, and in town the school buses are on snow routes with a 2 hour delay
12:09 PM roycroft: because if someone got up at dawn and looked really hard they might be able to see a snowflake or two in the sky
12:09 PM travis_farmer: this started as a light dusting...
12:10 PM * roycroft hs lived in the pacific northwet for over 40 years and still cannot comprehend how people can be such wusses when the "s" word comes up in the winter
12:10 PM mrec_: my scales cost 50$ each, taobao is cheaper than aliexpress
12:10 PM travis_farmer: yeah, out first storm shut everything down. even the plow/sander trucks...
12:10 PM roycroft: i grew up where there is actual snow
12:10 PM mrec_: the pricing is weird it depends on the reseller rather on the length of the scales
12:10 PM roycroft: often measured in inches per hour
12:11 PM roycroft: yes, mrec_, i've noticed that
12:11 PM roycroft: and with some sellers, a 200mm scale costs almost the same as an 1100mm scale
12:11 PM * travis_farmer is from Maine :-)
12:11 PM mrec_: roycroft: exactly
12:11 PM roycroft: while with other sellers, the 1100mm scale is more like 5x as much as the 200mm
12:11 PM roycroft: i'm from chicago originally
12:12 PM mrec_: I'm about to complete the X axis, tomorrow I'll finish installing the Y axis then X/Y/Z is mechanically ready
12:12 PM mrec_: is/are
12:12 PM roycroft: and while folks think of minnesota, northern wisconsin, buffalo, etc as the really snowy places, chicago gets its fair share
12:12 PM roycroft: especially right by the lake
12:12 PM roycroft: that link i just posted is pretty reasonable on price
12:12 PM mrec_: we used to have lots of snow in Austria but those times are gone
12:12 PM roycroft: don't get me wrong
12:12 PM mrec_: now even during christmas many areas do not have snow anymore
12:12 PM roycroft: we get heaps of snow here
12:12 PM roycroft: but one has to drive to it
12:13 PM roycroft: we'll get close to 2m of snow in the mountain passes by this weekend
12:13 PM roycroft: our climate is quite vertical
12:13 PM travis_farmer: used to have tons of snow when i was a kid... now, winters are less powerful
12:13 PM roycroft: as it is in austria, but the difference is that i live in a valley that's fairly low (150m), and near the ocean
12:14 PM roycroft: so our "base" climate is not very snowy right where i live
12:14 PM roycroft: but i'm less than an hour from real, significant snow, just about any time i choose to deal with it in the winter
12:14 PM mrec_: I was around 950m in Austria
12:14 PM roycroft: yeah, that sounds about right
12:14 PM roycroft: middle elevation
12:15 PM mrec_: 1 hour driving 3000m
12:15 PM roycroft: yup
12:15 PM roycroft: and our passes are closer to 2000m
12:15 PM mrec_: now here people seem to fly to korea or japan for skiing (Taiwan)
12:15 PM mrec_: I was surprised when I heard that the highest mountain in taiwan is almost 4000m
12:16 PM travis_farmer: i have a ski center just a few miles from where i live :-) though i don't ski much anymore
12:16 PM roycroft: i don't know much about the geography of taiwan, but my sense is that most of the population are in the far north, and most of southern taiwan is mountainous and forested
12:17 PM mrec_: Taiwan is smaller than Austria, TW population ~23 million, Austria 8-9 million
12:18 PM roycroft: yeah, it has typical asian population density
12:19 PM roycroft: but 1/3 of the population are in or near taipei
12:20 PM mrec_: yes
12:21 PM justache- is now known as justache
12:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: https://www.dropros.com/
12:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ah never mind they don't have the same parts anymore
12:45 PM roycroft: i have a shumatech dro-550
12:45 PM roycroft: it works with the cheap chinese encoders just fine
12:46 PM roycroft: i just need a ttl signal with A and B, and 5V
12:46 PM roycroft: i would have to take my dro apart and see how i have things configured
12:46 PM roycroft: iirc i added de-9 jacks for glass scales, and din connectors for the igaging scales
12:47 PM roycroft: but i don't recall if i have to change some jumpers internally to switch from one to the other - i think i do
12:51 PM mrec_: roycroft: does your dro use magnetic scales and db-9?
12:51 PM roycroft: it can use magnetic scales
12:51 PM mrec_: I also have a DRO lying around but I don't know / or at least don't remember the pinout
12:52 PM roycroft: there is no such thing as a db-9 connector to my knowledge, but i did install de-9 jacks on it
12:52 PM mrec_: I wonder if I can use the glass scales with it.. both are TTL (as far as I remember the magnetic one)
12:56 PM mrec_: ok learned something
12:57 PM mrec_: de-9 doesn't seem to exist
12:57 PM mrec_: db-9*
12:57 PM mrec_: de-9 would be the correct part
12:57 PM roycroft: https://www.shumatech.com/products/dro-550/docs/DRO-550%20Hardware%20Manual.pdf
12:57 PM roycroft: that's the dro i have
01:02 PM mrec_: I can't find a picture online of my one I archived it when I converted my machine to linuxcnc
01:03 PM mrec_: the magnetic scales were not protected enough and lost contact once there are too many chips between the sensor and the magnetic scale
01:03 PM mrec_: so I removed all of it
01:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Supports up to five Chinese (bin24, bcd7, bin6 formats) and quadrature digital scales
01:04 PM mrec_: also they glued the magnetic band onto a L shape aluminum profile, the glue went loose and the magnetic band slowly peeled of too
01:05 PM mrec_: for me it's just a question of the pinout, I know it will work because the magnetic one also had A/B feedback (TTL)
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: glass, magnetic, potato are the same if they have quadrature and the DRO has options for different voltage levels
01:07 PM mrec_: ya
01:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the main issue with all scales is keeping them clean, so pick a good mounting area or make one
01:08 PM mrec_: I will install some l-shape cover over it
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: chips are almost like heatsink compound, they travel to places that you don't expect
01:11 PM mrec_: I can tell! into my JMC motor below the RS232 driver and shorted/burned the STM32F1 controller on it
01:12 PM mrec_: that is the only chip that is not protected inside, otherwise all components are protected ... I really had good luck with that
01:12 PM mrec_: so I use that JMC motor as playground everything else is fine just the STM32F1 is dead
01:22 PM roycroft: the shumatech is pretty encoder agnostic
01:23 PM roycroft: but i do not want an encoder that is potato
01:23 PM roycroft: i'm done with the potato people
02:01 PM mc_chat: Anybody around who could give me a few pointers with diagnosing why I can't get any motion via EtherCAT on a Pi4 setup?
02:02 PM mc_chat: As far as I can see there are no errors being generated, and everything is showing as enabled and operational
02:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: anti-spudite?
02:55 PM jdh: I'd like some nema23 servo motors with hall feedback and 1000 line encoders. 50:1 gearbox would be nice also but not a requirement. Anybody have any suggestions?
02:56 PM CloudEvil: 1000 line on the output of the gearbox?
02:58 PM jdh: On the motor shaft
03:37 PM roycroft: them carbs are no good for you, capthindsight
03:37 PM roycroft: they'll give you the diabetes and stuff
03:37 PM roycroft: make your belly fat
04:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: https://nondeterministic.computer/@mjg59/109437701787816279

04:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: jdh: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MFA87KI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00 used this with much success!!
05:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm finding integrated driver closed loop nema23 steppers for less than nema17 motor + driver kits
05:05 PM roguish[m]: JT-Cave: something for your chicks https://www.popsci.com/diy/chicken-swing-diy/
05:16 PM JT-Shop2: I've looked at chicken swings before
05:17 PM JT-Shop2: maybe when I retire I'll have time to make one...
05:24 PM roguish[m]: JT-Shop2: like the cable guy says 'get 'er done.....'
05:24 PM * JT-Shop2 listens to Béla Fleck
05:25 PM JT-Shop2: I programmed a semi auto assembly machine for a Ford part today
05:26 PM JT-Shop2: easiest machine I've ever programmed... only took 3 hours
05:27 PM roguish[m]: a little bluegrass.... nice
05:27 PM JT-Shop2: the parts are a pia to assemble
05:28 PM JT-Shop2: but that's not my job mon
05:28 PM JT-Shop2: hmm nice some Procol Harum
05:31 PM JT-Shop2: I should get back to making brackets for the double chucker
05:34 PM Tom_L: yeah you better get all that done so you can retire
05:34 PM JT-Shop2: I hear that but first some supertramp
05:34 PM Tom_L: bloody well right
05:34 PM JT-Shop2: yup
05:51 PM JT-Shop2: the voyage then heading inside
05:56 PM JT-Shop2: well money for nothing then heading in
06:34 PM Tom_L: or just money..
06:34 PM Tom_L: pink floyd
