01:18 AM randy: morning
01:48 AM Deejay: moin
04:15 AM pere: hi
04:27 AM Tom_L: morning
06:05 AM pere: mc_chat: hi. :)
06:05 AM pere: mc_chat: was it you how had comments on the 'getting started' documentation?
07:44 AM JT[m]1: Morning
07:52 AM Tom_L: hi
08:43 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning
01:06 PM travis_farmer: well, first step of the control cabinet re-wire is a success. i have removed the sketchy power taps, in favor of fuses, and the scattered ground connections, in favor of a central star-ground. there is still much to do though, like enclose the wiring junctions on the machine, and reduce the complexity of the wiring. the machine is back to running status, though due to the cold affecting the USB to RS485 dongle, the VFD does not respond to
01:06 PM travis_farmer: commands. this is a chronic issue with my machine. every winter i think the dongle has crapped out, but it is just cold...
01:09 PM solarwind: well
01:10 PM solarwind: That's not really how electronics work. I'm guessing the low temperature is causing it to shrink and a loose connection is disconnecting
01:10 PM solarwind: if you have a temperature controlled oven, put it in there to reflow solder all the joints again
01:12 PM travis_farmer: could be, it is a cheap chineasiem dongle... i have a ethernet to RS485 module, so i will likely just install that at some point. it is "supposed" to be compatible down to some low temps...
01:13 PM Tom_L: oven would melt the plastic on the connectors if there is any
01:13 PM Tom_L: just ask me how i know
01:13 PM travis_farmer: lol
01:13 PM Tom_L: the board was dead, i was just trying to salvage parts
01:14 PM solarwind: Yeah obviously take it out of the enclosure first lol
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ok so the matrix bridge bot drops messages
01:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: what is your goal for the ethercat with LCNC?
01:21 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight[m] torque control at 8kHz. Not strictly necessary for CNC machines, but I'm going to use the same code anyway for robotic arm control
01:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: kewl
01:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: have you looked at bridging LCNC to ROS?
01:23 PM solarwind: I haven't
01:23 PM solarwind: what's ROS?
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ROS uses ZeroMQ
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what did machinekit use?
01:24 PM solarwind: oh. What does it use ZeroMQ for?
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh same one, ZeroMQ
01:24 PM solarwind: I mean ZeroMQ is yet another layer so it doesn't really apply to ethercat
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe someone will port ZeroMQ to LCNC some day?
01:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: it's a replacement for NML
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/code/LinuxCNC-block-diagram-small.png
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://machinekoder.com/machinetalk-explained-part-3-technologies/
01:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but ROS2 uses DDS
01:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://docs.ros.org/en/humble/Installation/DDS-Implementations.html
01:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://automaticaddison.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/ros-architecture.jpg
01:48 PM solarwind: I don't think zeromq has any advantage here
01:48 PM solarwind: It's just an abstraction layer for IPC or sockets
01:53 PM JT-Cave: nap time now
02:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: big picture, see the big picture
02:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://youtu.be/3QFFFomC28s?t=47
03:39 PM serp2 is now known as serp
03:48 PM roycroft: USA: 1 Iran: 0
03:49 PM roycroft: and we haven't been kicked out of the cup tournament yet
03:51 PM XXCoder: i didnt bother to follow
03:53 PM roycroft: well it turned political
03:53 PM roycroft: so it turned personal
03:55 PM roycroft: someone from us soccer "defaced" the iranian flag, by posting a picture of it with the emblem in the middle of the flag removed
03:55 PM JT-Shop2: hmm grizzly doesn't sell 15" psa discs they stop at 12"
03:55 PM roycroft: supposedly to show support for the women and children in iran who are being beaten by the revolutionary guard
03:55 PM roycroft: the team itself had nothing to do with it, and the posting was taken down almost immediately
03:56 PM roycroft: so then iran started whining that the us broke rules, and should be kicked out of the match
03:56 PM roycroft: iran also posted a picture of a burning us flag
03:56 PM roycroft: somehow that doesn't break the rules?
03:56 PM roycroft: 2sand.com have them, jt-shop2
03:58 PM JT-Shop2: yep just trying to decide if I want aluminum oxide or silicon carbide... I read something the other day but forgot what I read
03:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: or maybe stop having events like this in backwards ass countries just because you were bribed to have it there
03:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and the USA would also be in the backwards ass category
03:59 PM roycroft: if you're going to be sanding mostly raw wood, aluminium oxide would probably be fine
04:00 PM roycroft: if you're going to sand metals or wood with finish, then silicon carbide
04:00 PM roycroft: but we beat the iranians, capthindsight
04:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just in one soccer game
04:02 PM JT-Shop2: hmm I need to put some wheels under it...
04:02 PM JT-Shop2: roycroft, thanks
04:03 PM roycroft: so you picked up a 15" disc sander when you visited grizzly, i assume
04:03 PM JT-Shop2: yup
04:03 PM JT-Shop2: I ordered it the other day when it was on sale
04:04 PM roycroft: all i can say is that within seconds of using it for the first time you'll be asking yourself why you didn't get one years ago
04:07 PM roycroft: grizzly do have 15" psa sanding discs
04:07 PM roycroft: https://www.grizzly.com/products/woodstock-15-a-o-sanding-disc-120-grit-psa-2-pk./d4186
04:08 PM JT-Shop2: they are not in the store, they have to be ordered
04:09 PM roycroft: aah
04:09 PM JT-Shop2: I bought some 9" discs for the other sander
04:09 PM JT-Shop2: since I started using the 9" I've been wanting a bigger one for sure
04:09 PM roycroft: i'm happy with my 12", but if i had more floor space i'd get a 15" or 20"
04:10 PM roycroft: i don't think i'd be happy with a 9"
04:11 PM roycroft: i have had a couple 6" disc sanders over the years as parts of combo machines, and never used them
04:11 PM JT-Shop2: if you only have a 9" you would use it until you got a bigger one
04:11 PM JT-Shop2: same here, never used the 6" on the belt sanders
04:11 PM roycroft: yes, i might
04:11 PM roycroft: 9" is probably big enough to use
04:11 PM roycroft: 6" is just big enough to get in the way
04:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: what is a good source for belt material?
04:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have have some custom belt sanders 10-14 in wide
04:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'd like to buy uncut rolls slit to width
04:25 PM roycroft: i don't have a good source for bulk belt material like that
04:25 PM roycroft: you might try woodworker.com, but i'm not sure they have belt material that wide
04:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 8" x 80" is one I also need
04:32 PM JT-Shop2: https://www.trick-tools.com/Multitool-2-x-48-inch-1-hp-Belt-Grinder-MT482-8953
04:32 PM JT-Shop2: roycroft, I use that for metal but mine has a jet motor on it
04:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 6 x 80 is common
04:33 PM roycroft: i built a 2x72 belt grinder a few years ago that i use for both metal and wood
04:34 PM roycroft: i had a 6x80 that i used for wood until i built the 2x72
04:34 PM roycroft: i liked that sander a lot, and wish i still had it, but i needed the real estate it was consuming
04:36 PM roycroft: that 2x48 looks very compact
04:36 PM roycroft: it would be a nice machine to have
04:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I only use it for metals and plastics
04:50 PM JT-Shop2: I usually have a conditioning wheel on the other side, belts are fast to change
04:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is there a dust free wood that I can use?
04:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my real only problem with woodworking out in the open
04:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghbjgMyImcw
05:02 PM JT-Shop2: roycroft, https://www.amazon.com/Shop-Fox-D2057A-Adjustable-Mobile/dp/B0000DD6B9?th=1
05:02 PM JT-Shop2: I'm thinking of that mobile base
05:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: JT-Shop2: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/47518-fixing-the-f-king-forum-editor
05:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r|basement2: are you still down there?
05:25 PM roycroft: i build my own mobile bases
05:26 PM roycroft: i've had a similar shop fox, and i'm not impressed with the casters
05:26 PM roycroft: but i'm not impressed with the casters on any commercial mobile bases, which is why i make my own
05:27 PM XXCoder: snow here
05:27 PM XXCoder: not a lot
05:29 PM roycroft: we may be in for some snow later on in the week
05:30 PM roycroft: i should probably park my pickup in the back lot, off the street
05:30 PM roycroft: if it snows, any vehicle parked on the street will be a target
05:49 PM XXCoder: target of robbery or what?
05:54 PM roycroft: target of bumper cars
05:54 PM _unreal_: cant wait cant wait cant wait... just 12 days till my stocks run
05:54 PM _unreal_: mmat/mmtlp
05:55 PM XXCoder: ahh yea
06:01 PM _unreal_: freaking hell finally
06:01 PM _unreal_: computer had a sh!t fit HD going nuts
06:01 PM _unreal_: totally locked me up. and I just rebooted
06:01 PM _unreal_: sigh
06:02 PM _unreal_: so ya MMAT/MMTLP running on the 9th/12th of DEC. mmtlp going off market and all shorts have to cover.
06:09 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: hey. US beat Iran........
06:11 PM JT-Cave: I'll give the shop fox a try and see and if the casters suck replace them
06:12 PM roguish[m]: JT-Cave: sorry for butting in. I purchased 2 commercial machine bases. both suck..... can barely care half their advertised capacity. be careful
06:13 PM JT-Cave: I don't move things much but yeah I'm willing to take a chance on the shop fox mobile base for the 15" sander
06:14 PM roguish[m]: good luck. let up know how it works out. i would love to get something that can actually carry my Delta 20" bandsaw...
06:14 PM JT-Cave: what does it weigh?
06:15 PM roguish[m]: probably 200#
06:15 PM roguish[m]: pretty big.
06:16 PM roguish[m]: you guys see the volcano erupting in Hawaii? my sister lives on the side of it .....fortunately the 'safe' side. at least safe for now....
06:16 PM JT-Cave: the 15" sander is 221 lbs
06:25 PM roycroft: i don't like the "brakes" on the shop fox
06:25 PM roycroft: but it will carry the weight just fine
06:27 PM roycroft: i usualy get double locking casters like these for my mobile bases:
06:27 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HS381FH/
06:28 PM JT-Cave: nice looking casters
06:29 PM roycroft: and for the bases themselves, if i'm not making a cabinet out of mdf, i usually use 1"x0.120" square tubing welded up
06:29 PM JT-Cave: I don't see the need for brakes on a disc sander
06:29 PM roycroft: a 15" one?
06:29 PM JT-Cave: yep
06:29 PM roycroft: it might start spinning around if you don't have brakes
06:30 PM JT-Cave: not much pressure is needed to sand...
06:30 PM JT-Cave: flat spots on the wheels will keep it in place
06:30 PM roycroft: the centripetal force of the spinning disc will tend to cause rotation of the machine
06:35 PM JT-Cave: once spinning the disc will resist changes like a top does
06:37 PM roycroft: tell that to my 8" wire wheel mounted on a 1hp motor out in my fab shop
06:37 PM roycroft: the wheel acted like a lighthouse beacon
06:37 PM roycroft: until i bolted the stand down to the floor
06:38 PM roycroft: that does spin twice as fast as your new disc sander
06:38 PM JT-Cave: maybe it has problems listening to logic...
06:38 PM roycroft: but when not held down, it rotates pretty fast
06:39 PM roycroft: like 2-3rpm at least
06:41 PM roycroft: i'm sure some part of the machine is slightly unbalanced
06:42 PM roycroft: but it is impressive how fast it wants to spin around
09:34 PM mrec: yay my glass scales arrived
09:41 PM Tom_L: what type of interface do those have?
09:42 PM Tom_L: are they like quadrature encoders?
09:46 PM mrec: sino ka-300 encoders, I think they're all quadrature
09:47 PM mrec: I opened one yes, they're glass scales
09:47 PM mrec: I'm fine with the 5uM version
09:51 PM mrec: ABZ is there so quadrature should be there.
09:51 PM Tom_L: yep with index?
09:51 PM Tom_L: or would that be 'home' on those?
09:52 PM Tom_L: Z
09:52 PM mrec: Z yes seems like :-)
09:59 PM roycroft: i just found a good deal on a brand new 48" starrett straight edge
09:59 PM roycroft: but even though it's a good deal i'm not sure i should get it - i have a 36" already (and some shorter ones)
10:00 PM roycroft: it's something i'd probably use every couple years or so
10:04 PM solarwind: Someone gave me their flashforge dreamer 3D printer. Nice machine, but these things have no rigidity
10:05 PM solarwind: You can see the entire build plate vibrate under the extruder during rapids
10:05 PM XXCoder: once eqach 2 years eh dunno
10:05 PM solarwind: the guide rails also mounted on plastic wtf
10:06 PM solarwind: I don't think it's worth it to modify this thing. Might as well build one from scratch properly
10:07 PM roycroft: lots of folks get crappy 3d printers and improve them
10:07 PM roycroft: but at the end of the day you're still squirting parts, which is not a very exact process unless you put big money into it
10:08 PM solarwind: It's surprisingly good. I'm getting good results with a bit of tuning. I just don't like that it's not very rigid
10:09 PM roycroft: don't look at it while it's printing
10:09 PM solarwind: If it had an all metal frame with some more mass, the resolution would be a lot better. At the moment, I have to turn down travel speed
10:10 PM solarwind: But the dual direct drive extruders are nice. They max out at 250ÂșC, but very easy to print PVA/HIPS supports
11:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: I got flashforge off ebay for $50, I wanted to see the parts
11:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: factory returns with mystery problems, i think mine had a loose limit switch
