04:12 AM Deejay: moin
04:37 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning, happy turkey day (USA) :)
04:55 AM pere: did not know they celebrated the turks there. :)
04:55 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:56 AM travis_farmer: LMAO @ pere :)
05:05 AM Tom_L: morning
06:21 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: morning
06:42 AM JT-Cave: raining here
06:42 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: its raining here
06:44 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: south west us is storm weather at the mo. I just heard thunder.
06:44 AM TheMightyFozz[m]: UK not us

09:29 AM solarwind: Off the top of your head, which 3D printing filament has the least warping
09:30 AM solarwind: that is, highest dimensional accuracy after print
10:08 AM CaptHindsight[m]: solarwind: anything with a high loading of glass, clay or metallic particles
10:12 AM Deejay: re
11:11 AM _unreal_: So I got a 3 golf cart chargers :) trying to figure out how I want to use them.
11:12 AM _unreal_: I have 3 different builds... two are transformer based. one is switching.
11:13 AM _unreal_: the two transformer one's are 36v 21A, the one switching is a 48v 9A....
11:16 AM _unreal_: I dont think I can really use the switching one though. Its a smart charger with bluetooth monitoring. I'd have to figure out how to fake the charge sensor into thinking the "battery bank" its charging is at rock bottom to output max power or something along those lines.
11:17 AM _unreal_: the transformer one's I'm not sure how exciting they are on the inside. I dont know if its just a simple sense and some filtering? or if it has any advanced low balance features? I'm 90% sure they are rather simple.
11:24 AM jpa-: if they are for lead acid batteries, they are probably quite simple
11:30 AM _unreal_: the transformer one's yes
11:30 AM _unreal_: the SWITCH mode one :/
11:30 AM _unreal_: not so sure
11:49 AM mrec: how would you guys clear an angled surface within a slot?
11:50 AM _unreal_: ?
11:51 AM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/GKqwlm.jpg
11:51 AM mrec: I think about creating some custom zigzag g-code for it
11:54 AM _unreal_: ? dont know, not sure what I'm looking at regardless. I'm not really sure what your overall plan is regarding code and aspect and milling directions orientations etc...
11:54 AM mrec: there's a slot and the end of it is a bit chamfered
11:54 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:55 AM jpa-: you can get reasonably close with a small endmill, but on a 3 axis machine you can't get it perfect
11:56 AM mrec: I'm aware of that yes
11:56 AM jpa-: so are you asking about some specific CAM tool how to generate the path?
11:57 AM mrec: more like the method in general to get some idea what's available
11:57 AM mrec: I looked at mastercam but even with MC it's not straight forward
11:57 AM jpa-: seems like pretty basic 3d surfacing
11:58 AM jpa-: i would go along the gradient with parallel paths and small stepover
11:58 AM mrec: that's what I thought so far
11:58 AM mrec: my initial thinking was to use some adaptive clearance there but that doesn't exist (in any tools I know)
11:59 AM jpa-: even freecad should be able to do it if you enable the experimental features
11:59 AM mrec: I wasn't able to get it work with freecad
11:59 AM jpa-: you can adaptive clear close to the surface and then finish it off with 3d path
11:59 AM mrec: not with default features
12:00 PM jpa-: https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Path_Surface yeah, it is experimental and needs to be enabled separately
12:00 PM jpa-: freecad is not very good at 3d paths
12:00 PM mrec: yes I have it
12:01 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/pShJ2L.jpg
12:01 PM mrec: that's the entire object
12:02 PM mrec: I'm able to clear everything with freecad I have ~45 pieces here already
12:02 PM mrec: motors and gears installed as well
12:02 PM jpa-: what kind of problem are you running into with the surfacing?
12:03 PM mrec: but I need to rework that edge because the tape is jamming there occasionally
12:03 PM mrec: no problem so far but at the beginning of working out a solution for the chamferred edge
12:04 PM mrec: I also need to take care that I won't break the endmill, I'm using 4mm single flute there
12:09 PM jpa-: i would do something like https://jpa.kapsi.fi/stuff/pix/freecad_surfacing.png
12:09 PM mrec: I'll try to generate some toolpath from left to right and up / down
12:10 PM mrec: and for the rest I'll use my dearmel / dremel
12:10 PM jpa-: it's a bit annoying in freecad that you can either have it stop at the edge of the face, which will leave some uncut part, or you can uncheck "Boundary enforcement" which will unnecessarily cut along the sides also
12:10 PM roycroft: we have snow in the forecast for next week
12:10 PM mrec: I need to check that 3d surface feature I have reworked the base geometry menu here
12:11 PM mrec: it's only for 2d operations here at the moment.
12:11 PM * Tom_L prepares to throw a snowball at roycroft
12:11 PM roycroft: that would be fun
12:11 PM roycroft: and unusual
12:11 PM roycroft: it doesn't look like we'll get much snow
12:12 PM roycroft: too bad - i want to see how my new pickup handles in the snow
12:12 PM roycroft: but i don't have chains for it, and can't afford them right now, so i don't want a whole lot of snow
12:13 PM mrec: https://snipboard.io/QO6BPp.jpg
12:18 PM mrec: okay that 3d operation is getting close to what I need but I need some extensions there and need to take care that it won't mill into the overhanging stub
12:21 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/rFxNbV.jpg (not enough)
12:22 PM mrec: https://i.snipboard.io/yBo5bS.jpg (a little bit weird)
12:22 PM _unreal_: mrec, I'm not saying freecad is bad but compaired to "DesignSpark" its very hard to compare work flow and ease of use.
12:23 PM _unreal_: I find designspark/estlcam is the best working cad/cam team
12:23 PM _unreal_: and I own fusion
12:24 PM * roycroft will stick with solidworks until freecad becomes fully functional, at least
12:24 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:24 PM _unreal_: ya for me its the maturity of the code in freecad
12:25 PM roycroft: the code, what there is of it, is fairly mature at this point
12:25 PM roycroft: it's just incomplete
12:26 PM roycroft: but i won't get into all that in detail again - we've gone over this almost countless times now :)
12:26 PM mrec: I'm very fine with freecad! but I have reworked the features which I need
12:27 PM mrec: https://snipboard.io/DNIA4c.jpg with an extension like that it would go into the right direction
12:28 PM mrec: the standard freecad cannot handle that it seems
12:28 PM mrec: time to fix my freecad version and make that work :-)
12:28 PM Tom_L: push the changes
12:41 PM jpa-: mrec: you can set the "cut pattern angle" in data panel for the operation, but for some reason it is not in the gui
12:44 PM mrec: jpa-: can you show me a screenshot of that?
12:45 PM mrec: I think I know how to do it now
12:46 PM mrec: 1. a full adaptive clearance on the entire slot + some extensions
12:47 PM mrec: 2. a second adaptive clearance slot (a little bit deeper): https://i.snipboard.io/Qgbf9z.jpg
12:47 PM mrec: 3. 3d operation including the (red area) extension
12:47 PM mrec: however it needs some code update to recognize the extension too but that's a minor issue
01:55 PM roguish[m]: mrec: there is a FreeCAD/Path channel here..........
02:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://matrix.to/#/#FreeCAD_Path:gitter.im
02:38 PM XXCoder: happy celebrating the turks day. ;)
03:05 PM roycroft: it's a great day for me
03:06 PM roycroft: since i don't eat birds, my tradition is to serve dungeness crab for thanksgiving
03:06 PM roycroft: which is way better than a bird :)
03:08 PM XXCoder: dungeness crab?
03:14 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:20 PM roycroft: yes
03:20 PM roycroft: the stuff we harvest from the san francisco bay area to southern british columbia
03:21 PM XXCoder: interesting
03:21 PM roycroft: named after the dungeness spit up in sequim
03:21 PM XXCoder: I went to joes crab shack once lol that was long and hard to eat but yummy
03:21 PM roycroft: when you go to the fishmonger's and ask for "crab" you'll get dungeness crab
03:21 PM roycroft: the other kinds you'll see are king crab and snow crab, both from alaska
03:22 PM roycroft: this vacuum clamping stuff is getting expensive
03:23 PM roycroft: all the components for the manifold arrived yesterday, except for some 1/8" close nipples
03:23 PM XXCoder: checking map and theres none in wa state now. either we was at other state at that time, or one at wa closed down
03:23 PM roycroft: the manifold ended up costing about $100 by the time i got everything
03:23 PM roycroft: and i just spent $75 on the components to make 4 vacuum hoses, less the hose material itelf, which i already have
03:24 PM roycroft: that $75 was after discount - veneersupplies.com have a 15% off sale today, which interestingly goes down to 10% off tomorrow
03:24 PM roycroft: so i bought today, both to save money and to avoid spending money on greedy friday
03:25 PM * roycroft has to get back to cooking soon, as guests will be arriving in about 3 hours
03:26 PM roycroft: there's a new matt cremona video out today, btw
03:26 PM roycroft: he's testing his bandsaw mill extensions by slabbing a ginormous sugar maple log
03:26 PM roycroft: the thing is over 14' long
04:01 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:37 PM XXCoder: roycroft: back. yeah ow dont sound really cheap on vacuum system
06:26 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: The more I read about debian with cinnamon I love it. I just installed an extension that allows me to mouse wheel over the bar to switch workspaces instead of pressing three keys. I love this OS.
06:33 PM XXCoder: I just use xfce mint :)
06:46 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: I can be a little heavy handed on this machine resources wise. it's my old gaming pc
06:46 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: now my 3d modeling machine.
06:46 PM XXCoder: sure I can use more heavy handed desktop manager and such, but honestly I love xfce
06:47 PM XXCoder: my pc is way overkill for what I do. amd ryzen 5, 32 mb ram
06:48 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: oh wow. yep. im running a i7 6700k at 16gig
06:48 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: and a gtx 1060 3gb
06:49 PM XXCoder: im still using gtx 1060 lol
06:49 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: its a good card :P
06:49 PM XXCoder: it was to repair pc after pc stopped booting
06:49 PM XXCoder: I tested POST and it didnt even go that far
06:49 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: and very compatible with blender as i just found out.
06:49 PM XXCoder: nice
06:50 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: although your processor with all that ram might actually be better for rendering.
06:51 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: My motherboard blew the other week :(
06:51 PM XXCoder: it booted for last time in oct 12
06:51 PM XXCoder: bios showed cpy at 65c and other 3 cores at 50? c which is way too hot for pc that just turned on after a hour
06:52 PM XXCoder: I guess cpu sensors or cpu itself got fried
06:52 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: Oh no Poor PC. :( my gigabyte designare z170 stopped running 2 weeks ago
06:53 PM XXCoder: used my tiny rpi as main pc for month lol
06:53 PM XXCoder: that was "fun"
06:53 PM XXCoder: it barely could run discord
06:53 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: so i decided to get another motherboard and dual boot windows and debian for my lCNC work. much better and faster too.
06:54 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: wow that must have been hard.
06:54 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: poor pi
06:54 PM XXCoder: yeah thankfully royalroad is very low demend website lol
06:55 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: lcnc = linux cnc. sometimes i type faster than i think
06:55 PM XXCoder: yeah its my usual short for linuxcnc also
06:57 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: I just looked up that website. i used to play elite dangerous and flew for a time with drew wagner the author of some of the elite novelas
06:57 PM XXCoder: cool :) well I follow hundreds of stories there
06:57 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: he used to do fiction writing classes on discord, the group published a book together.
06:59 PM XXCoder: nice
07:01 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: royalroad is going to eat hours of my time it can tell.
07:01 PM XXCoder: :)
07:02 PM XXCoder: what type of stories you like?
07:04 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: Space, Sci-fi... ..films like Timebandits, The Man who fell to Earth, Flight of the navigator.
07:04 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: those kind of storys. i even like dune.
07:04 PM XXCoder: I do like sci fi but its not common enough. fantasy is fun
07:05 PM XXCoder: this is fantasy, a social worker and his daugher falls into fantasy type world. very long and very good story https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/26727/arkendrithyst/
07:05 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: well I am the only person i know who liked the Warcraft film. :P
07:06 PM XXCoder: I liked it actually but its not best lol
