12:23 AM randy: morning
12:32 AM XXCoder: hey
12:32 AM XXCoder: plai nice. well seems youre well on way to having good lcnc setup
12:49 AM CaptHindsight[m]: who started this rumor about having to change distros to use newer or older kernels?
01:03 AM pere: redhat users?
01:09 AM randy: well, could be because of stable and "unstable" releases with debian e.g.
01:10 AM randy: like "hey, if you want to have fancy new kernel features, go for ubuntu, if you want a stable platform, choose 'vanilla' debian"
01:11 AM randy: same with redhat and fedora (now centos)
03:55 AM Deejay: moin
04:28 AM Tom_L: morning
05:01 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:10 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning
10:03 AM roguish[m]: well 36 here right now..... a little warmer than the last few days.....
10:03 AM roguish[m]: at this time
11:14 AM roycroft: if only i would get a nickel for every email i receive with the subject line containing "black friday" i would be able to retire comfortably
11:15 AM travis_farmer: i feel left out... i don't get those
11:17 AM roycroft: i was hoping not to get so many this year
11:17 AM roycroft: this is the first year since i retired my decades-old email address that i foolishly gave out to the world at large before spam existed
11:18 AM travis_farmer: i was hoping to get my tax return back... but that's not very forth-coming for some reason...
11:20 AM roycroft: i had to pay this year
11:20 AM roycroft: so no refund for me
11:20 AM travis_farmer: i was supposed to get $4K back...
11:20 AM roycroft: i had a substantial capital gain the end of last year that both caused me to owe money and disqualified me from the stimulus check
12:51 PM roycroft: avidcnc just responded with the exact answer i needed
12:51 PM roycroft: that puts them ahead of the average vendor already
01:03 PM pere: roycroft: and for the curious bystander, can you share the question and answer?
01:04 PM roycroft: oh, i'm looking at buying some gear rack from them, and they publish the thickness and width of the rack on their website, but not the height
01:04 PM roycroft: so that's what i asked them - for the missing dimensions
01:04 PM roycroft: so that i can draw the rack and fit it into my router design
01:07 PM roycroft: https://www.avidcnc.com/dl/cad.pdf/MGM-52_v2014Q3.PDF
01:15 PM pere: ah, right. quick response is nice then. :)
01:16 PM roycroft: it took a couple days
01:16 PM roycroft: but it's a holiday week here in the usa
01:17 PM roycroft: and most vendors don't respond at all
01:17 PM roycroft: even when it's not a holiday
01:17 PM pere: oh
01:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.avidcnc.com/images/pro/pro_gear_rack3sm.jpg
01:26 PM roycroft: that is the rack gear i'm talking about
01:26 PM roycroft: and what i pasted above is the link to the drawing with incomplete dimensions
01:36 PM TheMightyFozz: Hi folks. Tonight's job is to install BlenderCAM. Is there a channel dedicated to it? looks like a B*&$h to install.
01:38 PM roycroft: if the installation works as advertised, it doesn't look too onerous a task
01:40 PM TheMightyFozz: My printer had me going for 4 hours the other day. trying to find drivers.
01:40 PM TheMightyFozz: i'm sure i can mess this up
01:41 PM roycroft: just take a snapshot of the machine image before you start, so you can easily go back if you mess it up
01:42 PM TheMightyFozz: is that the tool rnapshot ?
01:42 PM roycroft: i would probably spin up a sandbox virtual machine and mess with the install on that if i thought it might be problematic, and once i get it working, reproduce the steps on the production machine
01:43 PM TheMightyFozz: I'm running debian11
01:45 PM roycroft: i run most of my machines in a virtualized environment
01:46 PM roycroft: so i can just go to the hypervisor and take a snapshot of a virtual machine before i do a scary upgrade/install on it
01:46 PM TheMightyFozz: ahh.
01:46 PM roycroft: if you don't have that for your debian 11 machine you might consider installing a hypervisor somewhere so you can build sandbox machines to test with
01:47 PM roycroft: i much prefer the extra steps it takes to figure out how to do an install on a sandbox machine and then reproduce on the production machine than to have to clean up a mess on a production machine
01:48 PM TheMightyFozz: I'm learning this. Thats why my printer took so long to install
01:49 PM roycroft: just learning is a really good reason to test on virtual machines
01:50 PM roycroft: the drawback is that you may need additional resources to the virtualization
01:51 PM TheMightyFozz: I found this. looks like it might get me there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_Qq8Zv4SEo&ab_channel=Fanch
01:51 PM roycroft: you can install software on debian that allows you to run virtual machines from there, but it's really best to have a hypervisor that runs on bare iron, so a dedicated machine for the virtualization stuff
01:51 PM TheMightyFozz: have you used blendercam?
01:51 PM roycroft: no
01:51 PM roycroft: but i did look at the installation guide and it seems to be pretty straightforward
01:52 PM TheMightyFozz: it now runs on the LTS version 3 of blender and has a new group of people developing it.
01:52 PM roycroft: i might have been interested in it a year ago, but i've since upgraded my solidworks license, and have solidcam
01:53 PM TheMightyFozz: the FB page is updated regularly and I think they are trying to get permission to move the project to a new website and not just git
01:53 PM TheMightyFozz: nice
02:05 PM mwc is now known as mac
02:05 PM mac is now known as m_c
02:05 PM m_c is now known as mainly
02:05 PM mainly is now known as mc_chat
02:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: TheMightyFozz: which repo is the actual main repo, there are two forks that point to each other
02:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://github.com/vilemduha/blendercam
02:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Python 100.0%
02:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: TheMightyFozz: not much new happening there
02:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how accurately may two stepper motors be synchronized to each other running at ~100rpm max? (when properly sized, driven, etc etc)
02:45 PM TheMightyFozz: a lot seems to be happening in the matrix group. trying to set it up on this machine...
02:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: found them, thanks
02:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/general-off-topic-discussions/39951-stepper-motors-parallel.html
02:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how well may two stepper motors connected to the same shaft be synchronized?
02:56 PM Tom_L: if they have the same step rate i'd say pretty good unless you wire one backwards :)
02:57 PM Tom_L: is that like putting batteries in series to increase the voltage?
02:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the problem is with stepper drives that detect resonance and stalling
02:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: looks like I'll just have to find out how much difference there is, looks like <1 step, which can be enough to break a shaft made of crystal
03:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's the microstep jitter in closed loop
03:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: similar to two servos
03:38 PM JT-Shop22 is now known as JT-Shop2
03:38 PM JT-Shop2: dang it's 75°F in this shop
04:57 PM JT-Cave: turkey breast is in the brine...
04:58 PM rene-dev53 is now known as rene-dev5
04:58 PM Robert[m]12: CaptHindsight: I have arrived
04:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: doesn't need anything over USB, sometimes people use USB 5V power for things
04:59 PM Robert[m]12: It's me trying to read chinese instructions
04:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: which Mesa cards do you have?
04:59 PM Robert[m]12: Huanyang inverter.
04:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Robert: for the Chinese VFD?
04:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ah yeah
04:59 PM Robert[m]12: mesa 7i76e I think let me check
05:00 PM Robert[m]12: yup thats the thing
05:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: does the VFD have RS-485 serial?
05:01 PM Robert[m]12: I believe it does
05:02 PM Robert[m]12: HY02D223b is the model
05:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/33589-mesa-7i76-connect-to-vfd
05:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: using analog
05:03 PM Robert[m]12: oh thats helpful thanks.
05:04 PM * JT-Cave feels warmer already and I've only put up two bats
05:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there are videos on using rs-485 as well to connect serial to the VFD
05:05 PM Robert[m]12: I never needed to use bookmarks before i started down my cnc path. now i dont know where i would be without them.
05:06 PM JT-Cave: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/man/man1/hy_gt_vfd.1.html
05:06 PM JT-Cave: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/man/man1/hy_vfd.1.html
05:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if you are not using a spindle synchronized say for rigid tapping then you can use USB --> rs485 converter to control spindle speed
05:06 PM JT-Cave: there are two drivers for huanyang vfd's
05:07 PM Robert[m]12: this is going to take some reading + about 12 meters of wire. :P
05:09 PM Robert[m]12: would old ethernet cable work or is it higher power than that?
05:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: for spindle power or spindle control?
05:09 PM Robert[m]12: control
05:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: not enough for spindle power
05:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: for control it is fine
05:10 PM Tom_L: 3com maybe not :)
05:10 PM Robert[m]12: I might be able to do this then.
05:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: watch your ground loops and you might need more than 5V control logic for that distance to be reliable
05:12 PM Robert[m]12: Its just under 2m away. roughly 12 merers of wires in total
05:12 PM Robert[m]12: i placed it away from anything else to reduce interference.
05:13 PM Robert[m]12: SPINDLE- => analog input COM... (full message at <https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/v3/download/libera.chat/270061ef957053a6056881da3a079755c54a73de>)
05:14 PM Robert[m]12: whats spindle+
05:14 PM Robert[m]12: why is that 12v
05:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: speed control work like a potentiometer
05:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: a 12V voltage divider
05:15 PM Robert[m]12: does it have alot of draw? because I'm running a lED transformer for my 12v system.
05:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 12v - 0V variable speed control
05:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: very low, milliamps if that
05:15 PM Robert[m]12: ok this is getting more complex
05:16 PM Robert[m]12: so i need to convert the mesa 5v signal to 12v?
05:17 PM Robert[m]12: not sure what the 7i76e can handle.
05:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.forum.linuxcnc.org/27-driver-boards/33589-mesa-7i76-connect-to-vfd#246620
05:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: in this case you use 5V - 0V for speed control
05:20 PM Robert[m]12: ok my heads aching. it will go in eventually. 😂
05:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: slightly less noise immunity but it's the same voltage division
05:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so 5V is max rpm and 0V is 0rpm
05:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or you can flip that in the settings, 0V is max rpm, 5V 0rpm
05:23 PM Robert[m]12: thanks CaptHindsight and JT-Cave
05:25 PM JT-Cave: yw
05:27 PM TheMightyFozz: What is this instanced on Matrix too? I am literally looking at that and IRC and its the same chat.
05:28 PM Robert[m]12 is now known as TheMightyFozz[m]
05:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 👀
05:28 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: Hahaha
05:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: also bridged to Discord
05:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so you can have 3-way convos with yourself
05:30 PM TheMightyFozz[m]: This is great
05:30 PM TheMightyFozz: I agree
05:32 PM TheMightyFozz: Whats the Discord link? i cant search for it
05:34 PM TheMightyFozz: Ahh i think i found it
05:34 PM XXCoder: discord to irc is kinda broken
05:34 PM XXCoder: irc and matrix is fine
05:35 PM TheMightyFozz: Has it got 3 text channels. welcome, log and a general voice channel?
05:35 PM XXCoder: accept terms and there will be more
05:35 PM JT-Cave: rebooted my buildbot master and now no connection ip route comes back with some strange ip 168.254.0.0/16
05:36 PM XXCoder: hmm log shouldnt be visiable to you, nor voice. might be old discord
05:37 PM XXCoder: https://discord.gg/dmdw5kMS current one
05:37 PM TheMightyFozz: meta has an old link posted by CaptHindsight 01/05/2022
05:37 PM TheMightyFozz: an invite
05:37 PM XXCoder: lcnc wiki has current forever lasting invite
05:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://discord.com/channels/970073318357078036/970073318810075149
05:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://discord.gg/DTZjpv24
05:40 PM TheMightyFozz: Cap, you might want to post that in the old group. looks like theres been some recent activity.
05:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i don't have a link to the old group
05:41 PM TheMightyFozz: 6 others within this month
05:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he was going to turn that channel off anyway
05:41 PM TheMightyFozz: https://discord.gg/uXyhgN3m
05:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 😢
05:43 PM XXCoder: i see you got in
05:47 PM TheMightyFozz: Yeah thanks. It could be useful one day. I imagine different FAQ threads. such as links to a Huanyang VFD guide. etc.
05:48 PM TheMightyFozz: Like oneday I want to learn why Linux cnc can import images... ..I think it has something to do with height maps. but had too much to do to look
05:49 PM TheMightyFozz: https://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/gdem.asp
05:50 PM TheMightyFozz: This bottom image converts nicely in blender.
05:50 PM XXCoder: height map yeah
05:50 PM XXCoder: can do white as highest or lowerest, whatever looks better
05:51 PM TheMightyFozz: Does LinuxCNC figure out the gcode for that or is it a plugin.
05:51 PM Tom_L: plugin
05:52 PM TheMightyFozz: not today :-/
05:52 PM TheMightyFozz: lol
05:55 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:32 PM XXCoder: finally
08:32 PM XXCoder: watching blondihack video
08:32 PM XXCoder: one of over month ago lol
08:49 PM roycroft: i saw a really intersting woodworking video last night that you might be interested in, xxcoder
08:49 PM roycroft: let me see if ic an find it again
08:50 PM XXCoder: ok
08:51 PM roycroft: i was watching it on my tv, and i don't think the youtube app on the tv has history
08:51 PM roycroft: it was from a maker i'm not familiar with
08:56 PM XXCoder: ohh part 3 of that yorkshire cnc royter thing
08:57 PM XXCoder: 2 hours video lol probably will be skipping sp,me
09:00 PM roycroft: aha!
09:00 PM roycroft: i found it!
09:00 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZOY9DBXprI
09:00 PM XXCoder: looks fun
09:00 PM roycroft: and i'm glad, not only because i can share the link now, but because i want to check out more videos by that person
09:00 PM XXCoder: :) glad to be of help lol
09:01 PM XXCoder: saved link for later watching. I got lots to catch up on
09:01 PM XXCoder: 70 videos now. was 175 lol
09:01 PM XXCoder: (3 days of catching up so far)
09:01 PM roycroft: yeah, if you've been afk for a while it takes time to catch up
09:01 PM XXCoder: I couldnt access my rss feed
09:01 PM XXCoder: even if I could, I barely could watch videos at all
09:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:02 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/wbZmxablhiU btw part 3 of router build
09:02 PM roycroft: i don't see too many woodworking videos that turn me on to totally new techniques and methods
09:02 PM roycroft: that video did
09:03 PM XXCoder: did I link you that silly channel where guy "makes" stuff from wood, with just fingers?
09:03 PM roycroft: i was just watching one of his videos a couple days ago
09:03 PM roycroft: but not a new router build video
09:03 PM roycroft: new yorkshire workship is one of my "second tier" channels
09:04 PM roycroft: not because he's not as good or interesting as the top tier, but because the top tier needs to be small, due to my limited time to watch that stuff
09:04 PM XXCoder: yeah 2 hours is just big lol
09:04 PM roycroft: and my tiers are pretty fluid
09:04 PM XXCoder: virtually only big videos I watch is that channel and ryu
09:04 PM roycroft: new yorkshire workshop might move into the top tier for a while
09:04 PM roycroft: when i bump something else
09:04 PM XXCoder: latter being game channel.
09:04 PM XXCoder: rest is usually 30 min or so
09:04 PM XXCoder: or shorter
09:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: are there any commonly available mechanical push/pull solenoids that one can find at hardware stores?
09:06 PM roycroft: pedulla studio might move into top tier for a while
09:06 PM roycroft: you will probably have better luck finding solenoids at an auto parts store than at a hardware store
09:06 PM XXCoder: being a jobless bum I only have "will watch" or not
09:07 PM XXCoder: ones in former is in my rss feed
09:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: not starter solenoids, mechanical with a moving plunger that is located outside of the housing
09:14 PM XXCoder: his cnc box is looking amazing so far
09:15 PM XXCoder: he had to angle drivers but yeah
09:20 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:23 PM roycroft: new yorkshire workshop guy seems fairly competent
09:23 PM XXCoder: yeah
09:24 PM XXCoder: his giant router is looking good so far. part 1 and 2 was insane
09:24 PM XXCoder: he worked so hard to have precision
09:33 PM roycroft: i'm definitely following that build
09:33 PM roycroft: especially considering that i'm working on my own
09:34 PM XXCoder: yeah probably not that huge tho :D
09:34 PM roycroft: not this one
09:40 PM XXCoder: linuxcnc confirmed LOL
09:40 PM XXCoder: hes using that default linuxcnc engrave program
10:08 PM XXCoder: hmmm
10:08 PM XXCoder: his brush system is attached to z
10:08 PM XXCoder: I would do it seperately so spindle moving up and down dont move brush with it
10:20 PM XXCoder: roycroft: what. he sucked air though mdf and parts actually stays on?
10:21 PM XXCoder: never seen one like that
10:25 PM roycroft: mdf is porous
10:25 PM roycroft: so yes
10:25 PM XXCoder: yea didnt know it was possible though
10:25 PM roycroft: it's pretty commonly done, actually
10:25 PM XXCoder: looks like powerful hold. unlike one I used at one job I had
10:26 PM roycroft: i just got a bunch of parts today for my vacuum manifold
10:26 PM roycroft: maybe i have enough to build it this weekend
10:28 PM XXCoder: :)
10:31 PM roycroft: i'm making a vacuum clamping system for my joinery bench
10:31 PM roycroft: it will handle four vacuum clamping pads
10:34 PM XXCoder: nice
10:34 PM XXCoder: I wonder if I could build one for my small router lol
10:34 PM XXCoder: vacuum hold is nice if it works properly.
10:35 PM roycroft: i got this set
10:35 PM roycroft: https://www.rockler.com/rockler-vacuum-clamp-pod-kit
10:35 PM roycroft: they work pretty decently
10:35 PM XXCoder: interesting
10:36 PM XXCoder: its good for metal table setups for mine I guess
10:37 PM XXCoder: watching half as interesting now. apparently for 47 days, selling sliced bread was illegal lol
10:41 PM roycroft: i can't remember the last time i bought sliced bread
10:41 PM XXCoder: me either lol I tend to prefer tortella wraps than bread
10:56 PM XXCoder: yay another blondihacks
10:58 PM roycroft: she's settling into her new shop pretty well
10:59 PM XXCoder: yep.
10:59 PM XXCoder: looks nicer setup. the lathe mill area is same from old, but other areas is organized better
11:50 PM roycroft: i'm enjoying the new season of the crown, for the most part
11:51 PM roycroft: but it's so hard to watch dolores umbridge play the queen
11:51 PM XXCoder: the crown? is it a tv show?
11:51 PM roycroft: yes
11:51 PM roycroft: it's a series about queen elizabeth
11:52 PM roycroft: in its sixth season now
11:52 PM XXCoder: ok
11:53 PM roycroft: and imelda staunton is a really good and versatile actress
11:53 PM roycroft: who has a very rich and varied history
11:54 PM roycroft: but after playing dolores umbridge in harry potter it's hard to see her as anything else
11:56 PM XXCoder: yay more blondighack
