03:49 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning, 16F currently...

08:06 AM perry_j1987: morning
09:51 AM srk- is now known as srk
10:41 AM roguish[m]: JT-Cave: did you get your pay raise notice from the govt?
11:30 AM roycroft: i just emailed avidcnc with some questions about their rack and pinion drive parts - it will be interesting to see how responsive they are
11:31 AM roycroft: probably more so than an alibaba seller
12:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had 0% success trying to find a couple things made in China but sold here locally on Alibaba last week
12:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just out of curiosity, I actually tried for over 4 hours in chat session with once supplier, to see if I could actually end up with specs and pricing for a lathe mounted air chuck, no matter what I did they just didn't listen and tried to tell me what they had would work and just buy it now
12:39 PM roycroft: i'm interested in the avidcnc racking because it has an integral mounting flange that spaces the rack gear 0.125" off the mounting surface, thus allowing the pinion gear to engage the full width of the rack without having to do anything wonky
12:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.avidcnc.com/pro-gear-rack-39-1-meter-p-263.html
12:43 PM roycroft: yeah, that stuff
12:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.avidcnc.com/images/IMG_1225.JPG
12:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.avidcnc.com/images/pro/pro_gear_rack3sm.jpg
12:45 PM roycroft: i need some dimensions that they do not provide
12:46 PM roycroft: look at their drawings - they provide length and thickness, but not height
12:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you know you're talking to someone clueless when thy repeatedly ask you "what type of machine is this for?"
12:47 PM roycroft: "it's for a mechanical machine with some electronic components"
12:47 PM roycroft: that would be my answer
12:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sure
12:48 PM * roycroft strives to always be truthful
12:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I even called some supposedly top notch US outfits, they just asked the same questions in a more sophisticated manner
12:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "how are you doing it now?"
12:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "can we see the machine?"
12:50 PM roycroft: well hopefully avidcnc will just answer my question
12:50 PM roycroft: but they probably won't answer it directly
12:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: which translates to: I have no clue and I don't understand with pics, video or seeing the machine in person
12:50 PM roycroft: engineering would be willing, but marketing will require them to assist in "acquiring a new contact" before answering
12:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so it's not a translation problem, it's a people problem
12:51 PM roycroft: it's almost always a people problem
12:51 PM roycroft: well, it used to be
12:52 PM roycroft: with this new generation who grew up with cell phones while they were still nursing, i'm not so sure
12:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I can make it myself, but I was just checking to see if you already make this
12:52 PM roycroft: they speak in tik-tok, not verbal language
12:52 PM roycroft: i just want to buy some parts from them
12:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or can make it
12:53 PM roycroft: i could buy other rack gears and put spacers behind them
12:53 PM roycroft: but theirs already has the spacer, and it's priced decently
12:53 PM roycroft: it would be a lot easier to just use theirs
12:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "splunge"
12:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I forget , does it have an e at the end or not?
12:54 PM roycroft: i'm hoping to make further progress on my drawings before i actually purchase the components
12:54 PM roycroft: i belive it had the final e
12:55 PM roycroft: but if they won't provide the dimensions i need i can purchase the parts and then finish the drawings
12:55 PM roycroft: although if they won't provide the dimensions i'm not sure i want to buy stuff from them
12:56 PM roycroft: i'll just wait to hear back, and since this is thanksgiving week, i'll be patient - a lot of folks take the week off, and avidcnc may be short-staffed
12:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "oh and since we don't make that, your problem or request is wrong"
12:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "find a way to make it with our parts"
12:59 PM roycroft: i can make it with their parts
12:59 PM roycroft: all i need are the missing dimensions of their parts
12:59 PM roycroft: i have a .step file of the pinion gear - they are not averse to providing drawings
01:00 PM roycroft: it's just that this particular drawing is lacking in essential detail
01:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they don't offer 3d models?
01:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: https://khkgears.net/new/gear_rack.html out of curiosity, would this work? Mounting holes in the rack gear body without a flange?
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.automation4less.com/rack_pinion.htm
01:19 PM roycroft: it's all like that
01:19 PM roycroft: the difference between that and the avidcnc stuff is the gear rack on the latter is spaced 0.125" off the mounting surface
01:20 PM roycroft: i don't care where the mounting holes are
01:20 PM roycroft: i care about that space
03:22 PM JT-Cave: roguish[m], no
03:41 PM JT-Shop: whatever it might be it's not enough to offset the current inflation rate
04:42 PM TheMightyFozz: Hi folks, I'm setting up Debian on my main machine and getting rid of windows. is there any good rooms for Debian support. or anything else that may come in handy during my CNC journey?
04:43 PM roycroft: the linux channels can be somewhat unfriendly, especially to n00bs
04:44 PM roycroft: but this channel is probably a good resource for debian-specific questions when running linuxcnc
04:44 PM TheMightyFozz: I figured out most of it by reading. lol
04:45 PM TheMightyFozz: silly things really, like how to automaticity connect to my bluetooth soundbar at login.
04:45 PM TheMightyFozz: yep. i discovered free-cad a few months ago here.
04:48 PM XXCoder: hows goes freecad adventure
04:48 PM TheMightyFozz: I must admit I am impressed. my system boots up in 20 seconds. and I love the radio applet on the taskbar. Oh and camotics is a life saver for simulating G-code.
04:49 PM TheMightyFozz: FreCad is melting my brain. although i have made an archery stand in it. tbh I am probably going to look into BlenderCAM.. ..I used blender since 2000
04:50 PM JT-Shop2: TheMightyFozz, I have some tutorials here https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/index.html
04:50 PM TheMightyFozz: JSCut is the easiest program to use. I wish it was offline. I'd be stuck if that went down
04:51 PM roycroft: i'm off to get my flu shot and covid booster in a bit
04:52 PM roycroft: i figured i might as well get them at the same time, so if i have any downtime after, it will only be once
04:52 PM TheMightyFozz: roycroft. last time i was here you were printing hundreds of boxes. how did that go
04:53 PM roycroft: so if you don't see me any more, it didn't go well
04:53 PM roycroft: i mostly finished, themightyfozz
04:53 PM roycroft: at least all the of the fasteners that were in the wall-mounted storage are now in the boxes in the new cabinets
04:54 PM roycroft: i still have some to make for fasteners that were not organized
04:54 PM roycroft: i'll catch up on those as i have time
04:55 PM TheMightyFozz: Awesome. I might have my first client this week. making business card holders.
04:56 PM TheMightyFozz: not bad for a machine with an old PC power supply cable tied to the gantry cooling the spindle :P
05:04 PM Plaid: Hey, I know i asked this like yesterday... But everything restarted and I lost the entry. I wanna convert an existing router to use linuxcnc. It uses analog signaling for the servos. What do I need from mesa (that's in stock) to drive it?
05:48 PM Plaid: Would an 6I25 And 7I77 be the correct solution (and still leave me pins for 4 axis of encoders, endstops, and some others for random features that I'll add in the future?
06:01 PM roycroft: (that's in stock) <-- the difficult part
06:14 PM Tom_L: which noga base pn will fit a 'last word' indicator?
06:38 PM roycroft: i think my little one does
06:38 PM roycroft: let me check
06:41 PM roycroft: it doesn't
06:41 PM roycroft: it has a dovetailed end for test indicators and a 3/8" hole for standard dial indicators
06:42 PM Plaid: Actually, would a 7i96S and a 7I77 work for my use case? (4 axis of analog control)
06:59 PM roycroft: i do not think so
07:00 PM roycroft: the 7i96s is an ethernet card, and the 7i77 connects to a parallel card
07:01 PM roycroft: you can use the 7i77 with a 5i25, for example
07:02 PM roycroft: oh, wait, the 7i96s can connect to the parallel cards, so i guess it would work
07:03 PM * roycroft has a 7i96 for his router, but doesn't anticipate needing any daughter card for it for a while
07:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: http://store.mesanet.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=69_71&product_id=120
07:27 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:36 PM Plaid: CaptHindsight[m] Yeah, but do I have the combo of the two cards correct? I'd need to add a cable to convert the 26 pin to DB25 as well
08:08 PM roycroft: so i was in my garage shop doing some work when ups arrived
08:08 PM roycroft: i overheard something rather disturbing as they came up the drivewawy
08:10 PM roycroft: the regular driver was showing the seasonal temp the ropes, as happens this time every year and as they were both coming up the driveway, the regular drive said "this guy gets a lot of stuff. i deliver more stuff to him than most of the other people around here. and he gets good stuff. if you're ever going to case a house, this would be a good one"
08:10 PM roycroft: i am really hoping that was a joke
08:12 PM Tom_L: may be worth a call to their super
08:13 PM XXCoder: yah thats not great joke, if it was
08:13 PM Plaid: Have one of the package's tracking numbers on hand, it'll make it so they can ID the driver.
08:13 PM Tom_L: be sure to give them your garage code so they can 'put your package in a safe place'
08:41 PM roycroft: i'll just give the code to alexis
08:41 PM roycroft: NOT
08:43 PM Tom_L: my new router was 'one of the names' enabled
08:43 PM Tom_L: probably the one you mentioned
