01:32 AM pere: hi
02:02 AM Deejay: moin
02:28 AM sensille: i'm still pondering in which direction to take my colorlight fpga ... either make it mesa compatible, or ethercat compatible, or join the colorlight effort that's going on on the forum
02:30 AM sensille: ethercat seems to me to be the most universally useful
02:32 AM pere: ethercat terms of use seem to be less good than the mesa stuff. I am happy I use mesa cards.
02:32 AM sensille: i'd very much like to avoid writing HAL drivers
02:35 AM sensille: terms of use? you mean i'm somewhat restricted in implementing ethercat devices?
02:36 AM pere: Is <URL: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/pull/1422 > related to your work?
02:37 AM sensille: no, i haven't done much yet, but that would be option 3 to join that effort
02:38 AM sensille: but i'm not convinced that that is the best direction to take
02:39 AM pere: sensille: I mean there is a reason why the ethercat drivers is not included in the linuxcnc distribution. the copyright terms make it impossible, I've been told.
02:39 AM sensille: ah. zfs again :-(
02:40 AM pere: kind of, but zfs is actually free software, just gpl incompatible, while the core ethercad software is non-free software, if I got it right. note, I am only workin on rumors here, I had no interest in looking at the details myself.
02:41 AM sensille: "Manufacturers of EtherCAT devices have to join ETG and need a valid EtherCAT Vendor ID. Please keep in mind that membership is free of charge"
02:43 AM pere: I am talking about terms of use, not cost of entry. It do not really matter that 'you can join without paying anything' if you have to promise to give away your firstborn to join. :)
02:44 AM sensille: ouch. "Technologies that provide unique features need patents and licenses to protect them from being copied or falsified."
02:46 AM pere: like linux need protection from being copied and falsified. :) The best way to avoid fake copies is to be the best supplier of your free stuff. If everyone fetching the stuff from the original source because it is the easiest way to get something, there are no fake copies.
02:47 AM sensille: but IgH (EtherCAT Master for Linux) writes "All the source code available through IgH is licensed under the GPLv2 license."
02:48 AM sensille: so the easiest route seems to be to port the mesa stuff
02:51 AM pere: perhaps I am wrong. or is there some non-free library needed to get it working?

03:50 AM sensille: maybe the patents are already the issue

07:24 AM Tom_L: 21 here
07:35 AM JT-Shop: 55°F in here and 58°F in the big shop
07:45 AM thunder-gunner[m: 36 here. Bout to make some pancakes

09:38 AM roguish[m]: 48 here.... supposed to get up to mid-60's today..... no rain in sight.
09:38 AM roguish[m]: JT-Shop: how's that buildbot thing?
09:39 AM roguish[m]: is it running around the shop, chasing the chickens...
09:46 AM travis-farmer is now known as travis_farmer
09:48 AM travis_farmer: Hmmm... 36F with a high of 39F. not sure if my little camper diesel heater will provide enough heat to work on my machine today...
10:48 AM JT-Shop: Tom_L, and JT-Cave sorta have it working except for reporting to the irc

03:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: McMaster prices have gone up more, I got a few small timing pulleys and two L belts for $100 w/o shipping
03:39 PM JT-Shop2: it's the snowball effect and mcmaster is at the bottom of the hill
03:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: their picking and packing conveyor is larger than the luggage belts at most airports
03:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://goo.gl/maps/nrR6GzYuQFHr3iv7A
04:00 PM unterhaus: I was looking for a 1.5" flat belt pulley and Motion Industries wanted $250
04:01 PM unterhaus: mcmaster didn't have what I wanted, which may be a first
04:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: was it >2m in length?
04:03 PM unterhaus: it wasn't a timing pulley
04:03 PM unterhaus: a 2m long flat belt pulley is a rod
04:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sorry you did say pulley
04:04 PM unterhaus: they do sell timing pulley material you can cut, I have thought about it
04:05 PM unterhaus: I guess I could make my own pulley. People are selling them as part of a kit for $50
04:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i had some Chinese specials in a box
04:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they tend to have oversized bores
04:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.bbman.com/bar-stock/
04:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: https://sdp-si.com/ have you tried?
04:31 PM unterhaus: they didnt' seem to have any. I want a pulley to do this conversion for a different sander https://www.ebay.com/itm/274450561719
04:41 PM roycroft: i have the air sander part of that
04:42 PM roycroft: i would not get the harbor freight one
04:42 PM roycroft: they are way more fiddly than it's worth spending time on
04:43 PM roycroft: conceptually it's a great sander to have, though
05:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Neither the Milwaukee tool nor belt sander are included. And no Karen, I'm not changing the photo just for you.... If you flip out, physically threaten me, and demand something that's clearly not included, you'll be reported to eBay. You clearly have no idea.... If this is unacceptable, you have my address, you are welcome to come see me, I'd be happy to help clear things up for you in person.
05:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Also: I retain a patent protecting my sales of parts that convert a cordless tool into a belt sander. Make your own, I don't care, if the manufacturers come with this tool, I'm clearly done, but try to sell or market the parts, you'll see a letter from the patent attorney. Fair warning.
05:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: wow
05:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ebay NOTa Belt Sander CONVERSION PARTS FOR Milwaukee M12 Cut Off Saw 2522-20, 1/2" x 18", this is just a pulley and some screws :)
05:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: fricken patent on a pulley and some scerws
05:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 2,439 sold
05:10 PM CloudEvil: Fraudulently claiming a patent may be an offence
05:13 PM xxcodery: probably real. apple patented rounded rectangle
05:23 PM Plaid: I'm looking at converting an old router that has encoder+analog servos on it to linuxcnc.  What do I need to get from mesa to interface with it?  They seem to have a lot of stuff out of stock... stupid chip shortage.
05:23 PM Plaid: (or not mesa, I don't know if there's something better since last time I worked with linuxcnc
05:25 PM JT-Cave: 7i77 is an analog servo daughter card, the 7i92T series of boards is due in very soon
05:27 PM JT-Cave: right now the only board available is the 7i96S which can be flashed with a 7i77 firmware
05:27 PM JT-Cave: my mesa configuration tool is the best way to create the configuration files
05:27 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/mesact/index.html
05:30 PM Plaid: I'm still trying to get the hang PC-hardware side of things.  I get how it works in purely parallel port mode, but I haven't gotten the hang of mesa cards yet
05:32 PM JT-Cave: the 7i92T uses the ethernet port and the 7i77 plugs into the expansion port on the 7i92T
05:33 PM JT-Cave: if you install my tool it might make things click...
05:39 PM Plaid: Oh, it just clicked.  The pci card does the same thing as the ethernet card, it's just a question of communcation over ethernet or communication over pci, to speak the fpga chip.   Then the daughercards are "just breakout boards" for the pins (and deal with realistic problems like isolation)
05:44 PM Plaid: But it seems like most of the Mesa website is out of stock.  Is there other options?
06:03 PM xxcodery: theres interesting alternatives
06:03 PM xxcodery: like color led controller board. it has frpa, and theres setup to use it for cnc
06:04 PM xxcodery: but otherwise dunno. im sure color board has limitions on volts or whatever

08:27 PM XXCoder: im back home
08:27 PM XXCoder: oct 10 to nov 19 jeez so long
09:57 PM solarwind: I have two STM32F7 pinging each other over Ethernet at real time latencies with FreeRTOS
09:58 PM solarwind: I mean not a huge accomplishment or anything lol, that's how it's supposed to be
09:58 PM solarwind: but very promising for EtherCAT
09:59 PM solarwind: John from automation technologies has been the only reason I bought leadshine. They should pay him to be their USA rep
09:59 PM solarwind: And, very important, fire Chris Li
10:00 PM solarwind: pcw---home you suggested clearpath Eclipse servo drives; they don't sell in small quantities. Minimum order is like 1,000 units or something. They gave me a call.
10:01 PM solarwind: Elmo drives are decent, I've used them in the past, mostly for robotics applications because they're compact and designed to work with a wide variety of encoders

11:11 PM bartch: hello
11:17 PM bartch: hello? I have a question concerning a spindle... maybe someone could help me out
11:18 PM Tom_L: maybe you should ask the real question
11:19 PM bartch: Sure, I just wanted to know if anyone is here and if such questions are allowed... :) haven't been on irc for 10 years
11:20 PM Tom_L: not the best time to ask and you are allowed to ask :)
11:20 PM bartch: Yes, so I am unsure of the the spindle toolholder adapter on a spindle I am interested in buying, the seller has no idea and I just have some photos...
11:20 PM bartch: seems like a cut bt40... hsk? been doing some research but not conclusive... so I wondered maybe someone has worked with or seen such a configuration
11:21 PM bartch: the seller is just one of those big recyclers/resellers of dismantled machines
11:23 PM Tom_L: post the pics and maybe somebody will reply in a few hrs
11:23 PM bartch: yeah thats my next question
11:23 PM bartch: where do I post?
11:24 PM bartch: btw, Tom_L, thanks for your support
11:24 PM Tom_L: on pics, i'm not too sure anymore
11:24 PM bartch: lol
11:24 PM Tom_L: imagebin of some sort
11:24 PM bartch: ahhh ok
11:24 PM bartch: and then just give links
11:24 PM bartch: right irc has no such feature inside
11:24 PM Tom_L: matrix does
11:24 PM Tom_L: discord..
11:24 PM Tom_L: and they're attached
11:25 PM Tom_L: https://imgur.com/upload
11:26 PM Tom_L: later.
11:26 PM bartch: https://pasteboard.co/V2BbEdnWZLab.png
11:27 PM bartch: yeah thanks
11:27 PM Tom_L: quite the rust bucket
11:27 PM bartch: https://imgur.com/a/TjUW7TD
11:27 PM bartch: yeah but the price is right if the freakin bearings are not dead
11:28 PM bartch: rust I can live with
11:28 PM bartch: but the end for the toolholder... I can't figure if it is standard and could be used or not
11:28 PM Tom_L: dunno either
11:29 PM bartch: it looks nearly like a BT, but you see inside the taper is not full length... so I started thinking it might be HSK or something.. but its out of my area of knowledge
11:46 PM bartch: I will perhaps have to resort to a chinese made cheap spindle but with a standard adapter... and perhaps change the bearings for real ones
11:54 PM XXCoder: previously discord of linuxcnc was bridged here but theres still problems so cannot run it for now
