01:06 AM Deejay: moin
02:34 AM CaptHindsight[m]: are any of the small zinc lathe chucks available in a powered/pneumatic version?
04:43 AM Tom_L: morning
04:43 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning
04:52 AM JT-Cave: morning
09:16 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I just got buildbot to build a deb after a change in a test repo
09:18 AM Loetmichel: **AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!111** Boss wrote an offer to a customer... xx PCs with an H410 board with 12V input, 65W max TDP and DDR4 ram sockets. And offered 16Gb DDR5 ram, an I7-10700k CPU and a normal 500W ATX PSU... Not to mention offering a dell P2722 1920x1200 Display. Which has 1920x1080. Now i have to do the walk to canossa and apologize to the customer that that offer isnt possible :( Can
09:18 AM Loetmichel: someone please just shoot me?
09:20 AM travis_farmer: Loetmichel: BANG!!! ;)
09:20 AM Loetmichel: thanks
09:21 AM travis_farmer: anytime lol
09:23 AM pere: JT-Cave: cool
10:05 AM JT-Cave: very cool.. now on to the next challenge
11:31 AM unterhaus: I guess using a tablet as a lcnc display isn't trivial, right?
11:33 AM Rab: Why not, with an X, VNC, etc. client?
11:34 AM Rab: My own experiments with display forwarding Axis weren't super performant, but it worked. On really slow hardware, too.
11:34 AM Rab: Faster hardware might work better.
11:34 AM miss0r: 'evening
11:35 AM Rab: miss0r, greetings
11:35 AM miss0r: would any of you guys happen to be experts on the apache2.4 port for synology DSM? :D
11:37 AM miss0r: didn't think so :)
11:39 AM roycroft: i experimented with x forwarding to a laptop, and decided it was a bad idea
11:39 AM roycroft: if your connection from the laptop to the linuxcnc computer goes down, linuxcnc dies
11:39 AM roycroft: if you use vnd and the connection goes down, your vnc session disconnects and you can reconnect it later
11:40 AM roycroft: vnc, rather
11:40 AM Rab: unterhaus, if you mean a native tablet GUI talking to the LinuxCNC internals through direct network IPC rather than display forwarding, I have seen some discussion of remote frontend clients before. Specifically I think there is or was a headless client which could serve as a proof of concept...might date back to "EMC2" days though.
11:40 AM roycroft: for my cnc router i'm using an rpi4 to run linuxcnc, and vnc on the laptop
11:40 AM Rab: roycroft, good point.
11:41 AM roycroft: my initial experiments with that have gone well
11:41 AM Rab: FWIW I saw practically no performance difference between X forwarding and VNC.
11:41 AM roycroft: i'd just hate for a part to be ruined if the wireless/whatever connection goes down
11:41 AM unterhaus: There have been a lot of experiments over the years, this was one of the reasons for machinekit
11:41 AM roycroft: yeah, x forwarding worked fine for me on the laptop
11:42 AM Rab: NX is supposed to be faster than VNC, but I haven't tried it.
11:42 AM roycroft: i just don't like the idea of losing it all if the connection is down
11:42 AM unterhaus: if there are network protocols involved, it's probably too much work for me :)
11:43 AM unterhaus: I guess there have been web interfaces too
11:43 AM Rab: unterhaus, indeed, I was specifically trying to export the display from Machinekit on a BeagleBone Black because Axis framerate was so slow. Remote display worked great but was equally slow, so the display wasn't the problem. ^_^
11:43 AM pere: vnc is probably more robust regarding latency than x forwarding. nx is similar to vnc in this regard.
11:45 AM unterhaus: probably best to just hang a touchscreen off of an rpi
11:47 AM roycroft: i should also point out that i'm using a wifi connection from the laptop to the rpi
11:48 AM roycroft: if the laptop were hard-wired i'd not be as concerned about x forwarding
11:48 AM Rab: roycroft is wilin out
11:48 AM Rab: roycroft, has the connection ever actually dropped?
11:49 AM roycroft: no
11:49 AM roycroft: but that does not mean that some day it won't
11:49 AM Rab: That's encouraging, though.
11:49 AM roycroft: do your own risk assessment and make up your own mind about what is best for you
11:50 AM roycroft: i've also not done this on a live machine
11:50 AM roycroft: it's all been in a lab
11:50 AM roycroft: once it's on the shop floor and all the noise and confusion of the shop enter the picture, i don't know what will happen
11:51 AM Rab: Hmm, this must be basically at cost: https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=5513
11:52 AM roycroft: i bet chris bought a pile of those on clearance for $35 each
11:52 AM roycroft: he doesn't sell things at cost
11:53 AM Rab: The labor to set it up isn't free, even if it takes 15 minutes.
11:53 AM roycroft: this is why breeding exists
11:53 AM roycroft: well, one reason
11:54 AM Rab: I've tried that, but they're still at the running-off-with-the-tablet stage.
11:55 AM roycroft: you obviously did not plan well enough ahead
11:55 AM Rab: Some of us are late bloomers.
11:56 AM roycroft: i still have the dro i built years ago
11:56 AM roycroft: it's on my mill, but the scales don't work
11:57 AM roycroft: i was going to get some nice glass scales for it, but then i decided to do a cnc conversion (which i still haven't done)
11:57 AM roycroft: i should probably get glass scales to fit my lathe, which i do not plan on converting to cnc, and move the dro to that machine
11:58 AM roycroft: the one i built is the shumatech, which is a pretty nice dro
12:03 PM unterhaus: that dro is selling for less on ebay still, isn't it?
12:03 PM unterhaus: I have two dros for my lathe. The one on it is a mill dro, so less than ideal
12:04 PM unterhaus: best part was it was free
12:09 PM unterhaus: we had a light that would go on and off for no reason. Of course the last thing I thought of was the switch. Replacing the switch fixed it
12:15 PM roycroft: it's sad, but the shumatech dro has been discontinued
12:15 PM roycroft: it was pretty popular, and i understand the guy who designed it not wanting to continue manufacturing parts and the like - folks move on to other things
12:16 PM roycroft: but he had been asked to open source it or sell the rights to someone else, but he instead decided to just shitcan the project
12:16 PM roycroft: i guess i'm fortunate to have been able to get mine while they were still being made
12:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: http://www.shumatech.com/web/products/dro-350
12:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: The DRO-350 is an open project with the schematics, software, and PCB files (Gerbers) freely available for download at this site.
12:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: The DRO-350 has a number of problems including scale jitter, rounding errors, and axes that won't display. These problems will not be fixed and all future development activity will concentrate on the DRO-375 and DRO-550.
12:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: http://www.shumatech.com/web/products/opendro
12:19 PM roycroft: oh, he finally offered the pcb files for free
12:20 PM roycroft: they weren't always available
12:20 PM roycroft: the overlays are permanently oos, though, and those would be really useful
12:20 PM roycroft: and not everyone can make pcbs - they used to be for sale on the site
12:20 PM roycroft: but if the pcb files are available, someone else can make them
12:21 PM roycroft: i have the dro-550, and the lcd-200
12:21 PM roycroft: note that the website hasn't been updated in 8 years, when the project was abandoned
12:23 PM roycroft: you can still donate to the project though - the store is open for donations, but not for purchases
12:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: The manual for Manuel's manual lathe
12:57 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, what channel are you testing the buildbot in?
01:08 PM JT-Shop: bbtest repo
01:08 PM JT-Shop: oh irc channel?
01:08 PM JT-Shop: just local testing atm but I need to test the irc bot
01:08 PM Tom_L: is that part of the buildbot install?
01:11 PM JT-Shop: the irc bot?
01:11 PM Tom_L: yeah
01:11 PM JT-Shop: yeah it's part of buildbot
01:12 PM Tom_L: i haven't had a chance to look at it much
01:12 PM JT-Shop: it's a bit cornfusing at the beginning
01:12 PM Tom_L: did you set up a master and a slave?
01:13 PM Tom_L: or however they call them
01:13 PM JT-Shop: yea master and worker, let me share what I have so far with you
01:19 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: turboss has offered use of his server for a buildbot
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it already hosts qtpyvcp
01:56 PM miss0r5: ahh crap. apparently some missles touched down in poland...
01:57 PM miss0r5: missels? (who cares)
01:57 PM travis_farmer: miss0r5: for real? who's were they?
01:57 PM miss0r5: russian ones. Its all over the news feed here. Not confirmed yet.
01:57 PM miss0r5: Poland is calling for a crisis meeting and the pentagon is looking into it
01:57 PM travis_farmer: Hmmm, that's not a good thing if real
01:57 PM miss0r5: just what we need.
01:57 PM miss0r5: (sarcasm)
01:59 PM miss0r5: I doubt that, if true, it was an "accident". Nothing he does is an accident. Its a test of our resolve(again, if true)
01:59 PM travis_farmer: Hmmm, it is on my news too...
01:59 PM roycroft: it's breaking news in the us as well
02:00 PM miss0r5: This is going to hell in a hand basket
02:00 PM roycroft: and if confirmed, it is a very disturbing development
02:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the "Ruskies" will just blame it in someone else
02:00 PM * miss0r5 is still part of the reserve
02:00 PM travis_farmer: very disturbing, indeed
02:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: UK did it from our territory
02:00 PM roycroft: nato and russia do not need to be at war
02:00 PM miss0r5: lol yeah
02:01 PM miss0r5: Heres me hoping that ukraine can just beat russia into submission without dragging nato into an all out war
02:01 PM travis_farmer: nobody but russia wants a war
02:02 PM miss0r5: amen to that
02:02 PM roycroft: ukraine cannot go it alone
02:02 PM roycroft: but they need to be the primary force
02:02 PM miss0r5: at the moment they are not realy going it alone.
02:02 PM miss0r5: its a thin red line we dance on supporting them with everything but troops
02:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well the US just got though an election where not many useful RU supporting idiots won, time for more
02:03 PM roycroft: if this is proven to be from russia, article 5 may be invoked for the second time in history
02:03 PM miss0r5: yeah. Realy nobody wants that
02:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I was wondering what else they would do before winter sets in
02:03 PM roycroft: not even russia
02:04 PM roycroft: putin may want it
02:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Dictators bad!
02:04 PM roycroft: but he is the only person in the world who wants it
02:04 PM miss0r5: I was about to say least of all russia. But including nato is a serious leap towards doing something we might never recover from
02:04 PM travis_farmer: let me rephrase, nobody but Putin wants war
02:04 PM roycroft: and i think putin is kind of koo koo bananas now
02:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he gives 0 fucks about it
02:05 PM miss0r5: roycroft: well, some of the crazies surrounding putin is just as bad if not worse than him. So putting a bullet through his head, one of those will just step in
02:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: travis_farmer: i think he has a crazy support staff interested in domination as well
02:05 PM travis_farmer: likely true, Capt
02:05 PM miss0r5: but that does not mean that I do not find the idea of a bullet through putins head appealing
02:05 PM roycroft: but would they have the same kind of control over the billionaires that putin does?
02:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: don't be surprised when Russia acts like Russia
02:06 PM roycroft: wow
02:06 PM roycroft: even faux news think this is significant
02:06 PM travis_farmer: i would rather Putin get a Hellfire missle suppository
02:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: depends on if they are just as slick
02:06 PM roycroft: it's the #2 article on their website, and not even delayed by six hours
02:07 PM miss0r5: CaptHindsight[m]: You say that. But my military training was all about defending from a russian attack. Which is why I looked in awe when "we" made the entire european union hooked on russian gas
02:07 PM roycroft: of course, the coronation of kevin mccarthy is more important than the potential beginning of ww iii on faux news, but that's to be expected
02:07 PM miss0r5: that is just poor judgement from our side
02:07 PM miss0r5: roycroft: haha yeah
02:08 PM miss0r5: "I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein.
02:08 PM miss0r5: Now we wait.
02:08 PM roycroft: if it does turn out to be a russian missile attack, i'd be willing to bet it was not intentional
02:09 PM roycroft: but putin still needs to deal with the consequences
02:09 PM roycroft: he's the one who is dragging children off the streets and sending them into war without any training
02:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r5: yeah I didn't know that the EU had relied on Russian gas so much, that was really short sighted
02:09 PM miss0r5: "Russia denies firing missels at targets near poland border. they call it an "intentional provokation" "
02:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe why Merkel retired, she knew it was coming
02:10 PM miss0r5: maybe. Hungary is also calling for a crisis meeting now... *sigh*
02:10 PM miss0r5: which is odd, considering they are basically best buds with russia (compared to other european contries)
02:11 PM roycroft: she retired because she had served far longer than anyone should have been expected to, and was deserving of a rest
02:11 PM roycroft: besides
02:11 PM Rab: roycroft, now now, McCarthy's also the headline on CNN.com.
02:11 PM roycroft: she got the heebie jeebies when dubya gave her a shoulder rub
02:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r5: well they don't want to be caught on the wrong side and they are also a puppet of putin, so they can act on behalf of Russia
02:12 PM roycroft: just think about what would have happened if biden's predecessor had a private meeting with her
02:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: HungaryL " hey look over there"
02:13 PM * roycroft waits for the faux news crowd to blame biden for the russian missile attack on nato soil
02:14 PM travis_farmer: lol roycroft
02:14 PM Rab: Wonder if anybody is capable of recording the missile tracks, e.g. through radar or real-time sat imagery or something.
02:15 PM roycroft: tucker will start screaming that if we had just sold russia some good missiles they would have been able to aim them better
02:15 PM miss0r5: lol
02:15 PM roycroft: i think the trajectories are pretty well surveilled
02:15 PM miss0r5: probably not on "small" missels like that.
02:15 PM roycroft: ukraine is blanketed in satellites
02:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well lets see what they decide to feed us in the news
02:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's not like there is the facts network with just the facts and you decide
02:16 PM travis_farmer: lol
02:16 PM miss0r5: ... apparently the missels killed polish nationals
02:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if i can find my welding helmet I might watch Fox
02:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is Biden still in Bali?
02:18 PM miss0r5: an unofficial announcement from the american defence ministry is that the trajectory of the missle was tracked by them and they reported to poland that it originated in russia
02:18 PM travis_farmer: dang...
02:19 PM miss0r5: fsck me.. I will go order more oil for my furnace now.
02:19 PM Rab: US is in on Ukraine's false flag attack, pass it on!
02:19 PM travis_farmer: never mind my CNC shed build... maybe i will build a fallout shelter...
02:20 PM roycroft: i suspect nato won't invoke article 5 yet
02:20 PM roycroft: there will be another round of travel bans
02:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: travis_farmer: nah you just die of starvation in a few months anyway, look on the good side
02:20 PM roycroft: but i don't know how low that will go
02:20 PM roycroft: canada just banned a bunch of russian business people and diplomats
02:20 PM travis_farmer: Hmmm...
02:20 PM roycroft: and in retaliation, russia banned jim carey
02:20 PM roycroft: who's next?
02:21 PM roycroft: celine dion?
02:21 PM roycroft: justin bieber?
02:21 PM roycroft: lorne green's head in a jar?
02:21 PM miss0r5: I don't suspect they will ever go so far as to ban trump lol
02:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well that is understandable (jim carey)
02:21 PM miss0r5: heck, if I was in charge here, Denmark would be closed for justin bieber :D
02:22 PM travis_farmer: i wonder if i am too old and fat to be drafted...
02:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why do they always end up sounding like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV4N2dk0cMk
02:23 PM roycroft: anyway
02:23 PM roycroft: the bottom line is this:
02:23 PM roycroft: if this does prove to be a russian attack on poland (accidental or not), according to article 5, the russians have attacked the usa
02:23 PM miss0r5: yeah
02:24 PM roycroft: so think about that
02:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: history in the making
02:24 PM roycroft: i am a rare person in this country
02:24 PM roycroft: a male who was never required to register for the draft
02:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "hey grampa, how did WWIII start?"
02:24 PM roycroft: selective service registration was abolished a few months before my 18th birthday
02:25 PM travis_farmer: i registered when i was 18, but i lost my card years ago
02:25 PM roycroft: and when it was reinstated, i had just turned old enough to be exempt from registering
02:25 PM miss0r5: sadly that is not me. I am still in the reserve 5 more years
02:25 PM miss0r5: I am supposed to command an artillery unit
02:26 PM miss0r5: meh. Lets hope it does not come to that
02:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r5: hopefully this won't come to that
02:26 PM roycroft: but consider this also
02:27 PM * travis_farmer was almost in the army, but got psychologicaly disqualified
02:27 PM xxcodery: it draft went down to me, usa is truly well fucked
02:27 PM miss0r5: In a perfect world russia would've never invaded ukraine. In a less perfect world it still happened, but we can hope they are shitting bricks over there in the kreml with the prospect of NATOs involvement
02:27 PM roycroft: peace talks are being discussed between ukraine and russia
02:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: interesting this happening with so many world leaders in Bali
02:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they can meet in person vs teleconferences
02:27 PM roycroft: this missile attack will seriously strengthen ukraine's position in the talks, if they happen
02:27 PM travis_farmer: true, Capt
02:28 PM roycroft: ukraine will say 'leave our country and then we'll talk'
02:28 PM roycroft: russia will say "it's our country now"
02:28 PM miss0r5: peace talks are in the works. but I am getting a little pissed(understatement) at the russian officials, saying that ukraine blocks negotiations with unreasonable demands... you know - like GTFO?
02:28 PM roycroft: ukraine will say "poland"
02:29 PM roycroft: they aren't talks yet
02:29 PM roycroft: they are nothing more than rounds of word lobbing
02:29 PM miss0r5: they had some way back in the start. but no more
02:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the poor Poles always get attacked
02:34 PM miss0r5: Speaking as an indirect neighbour - I get it.
02:34 PM miss0r5: :]
02:35 PM miss0r5: But seriously, he just poked a stick into an already wound-up hornets nets.
02:35 PM miss0r5: well sh!t...
02:36 PM miss0r5: Ukranian tracking systems allegedly reports that the russian missel hit poland in a direct line
02:36 PM miss0r5: "no apparent sign of malfunction"
02:38 PM miss0r5: Thats it. I'm going to bed. See you around
02:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well it wasn't nuclear so maybe Ukraine will get some new toys pretty soon
02:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: for the holidays
02:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r5: see you tomorrow
02:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Volodymyr Zelenskyy was invited to the G20, is here there?
02:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ah nope
02:59 PM roycroft: he's kind of busy at home tending to a little scuffle
03:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: pointed sticks
03:36 PM roycroft: raspberries
