12:14 AM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: you probably don't need the teeth of the smaller gear right up to the side of the larger
12:24 AM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: or cut the small gear profile into the larger and just slide it over the smaller
12:38 AM roycroft: i need to bore the assembly for a shaft with bearings on each end
12:39 AM roycroft: and you're right - the teeth of the small gear do not need to go quite all the way to the side of the bigger one
12:39 AM roycroft: but they need to go really close
12:40 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
12:40 AM roycroft: i can buy that gear assembly in the photo, but i may need to alter the larger one
12:47 AM CaptHindsight[m]: sounds easier than starting from scratch
01:17 AM Deejay: moin
01:25 AM roycroft: i'm just considering my options right now
01:26 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
01:26 AM xxcodery: yeah. considering options is nice
01:26 AM xxcodery: because when I found out for sure my pc is dead, i insantly ordered parts
01:26 AM xxcodery: that was after week of comparing stuff
02:08 AM Centurion_Dan1 is now known as Centurion_Dan
04:32 AM Tom_L: morning
04:36 AM xxcodery: xxcoder[m] test
04:42 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning, Snow in northern Maine, but not here yet :)
05:13 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:11 AM CaptHindsight[m]: we already had snow flurries that stuck around the other day, 2 in. (5cm) of snow tomorrow
07:14 AM CaptHindsight[m]: 21F now (-6C) we were just near 80 on Thursday (26C)
07:58 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, when you get a chance build the rpi debs
12:02 PM Tom_L: ok
12:15 PM unterhaus: People are here to trim our trees and they have been quiet -- too quiet
12:23 PM unterhaus: finally heard a chainsaw.
12:25 PM Tom_L: union break
12:32 PM unterhaus: front yard is full of branches now.
12:33 PM Tom_L: now i'd be concerned about them leaving :)
12:35 PM unterhaus: I'm convinced they want to be paid, so probably not an issue. They aren't particularly cheap, but it's cheaper than falling out of a tree
12:35 PM Tom_L: aww, just tie a rope around your neck.. that'll keep you from hitting the ground
12:35 PM unterhaus: We're supposed to get snow tomorrow, so I was worried about getting the branches off of the roof
12:36 PM Tom_L: winter advisory today here
12:36 PM unterhaus: have you gotten snow?
12:36 PM Tom_L: i did one time step onto about an 8" branch and it gave out on me
12:36 PM Tom_L: rotten to the core
12:36 PM Tom_L: not yet
12:36 PM Tom_L: maybe a couple flakes
12:36 PM unterhaus: The trees themselves seem to be solid
12:37 PM unterhaus: no way I would support myself on the branches
12:38 PM Tom_L: i don't do much of that anymore but used to help a friend in the lawn business
12:38 PM Tom_L: he was chicken to get in a tree
12:38 PM unterhaus: after friday's performance with a little rain, I'm afraid what will happen when we get snow
12:38 PM unterhaus: crashes everywhere
12:38 PM Tom_L: good season to be in the body shop business
12:39 PM Tom_L: if you can even get parts
12:39 PM unterhaus: well, I'm supposed to be in bed recovering from ankle surgery, so I have an excuse
12:39 PM unterhaus: not to drive, that is
12:40 PM unterhaus: I have heard they are repairing cars right now that they would definitely have totaled in recent years
12:41 PM Tom_L: that and don't break down on the road and leave it... you may not have a car long
12:44 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, i see you dumped all the old ones
12:49 PM Tom_L: 54 is up
12:57 PM unterhaus: It's nice to go outside, look at those trees and not feel like my roof is in danger
01:09 PM jdh: Body shop has had my MiL's car since Nov 1st. Waiting on parts
01:46 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:00 PM JT-Shop: only took me a month to replace two $3 parts on my Corvette... granted about 2 weeks I was waiting on the "correct" part to arrive...
03:01 PM Tom_L: and here i thought you were knee deep in a buildbot
03:04 PM JT-Shop: just got back from collecting a paycheck and looking at the current conversion I'm working on
03:04 PM JT-Shop: fixing to spoil the hens...
03:04 PM Tom_L: pr is up
03:05 PM JT-Shop: yeah I just read my email and saw that, thanks
03:05 PM JT-Shop: so the older debs have been moved to Releases
03:09 PM Tom_L: how do you break the code out for a release?
03:09 PM Tom_L: i assume git keeps track of all that?
03:11 PM JT-Shop: the download button will d/l from releases now, the older versions still need to download from the repo
03:12 PM JT-Shop: that's why I had you build the rpi debs that I deleted before thinking this through
03:12 PM JT-Shop: https://github.com/jethornton/mesact
03:12 PM JT-Shop: click on Releases or Latest
03:13 PM Tom_L: i was looking
03:14 PM Tom_L: are you missing some?
03:15 PM JT-Shop: the oldest 3 I deleted some time back
03:16 PM Tom_L: may still be on the local copies
03:16 PM Tom_L: i'd have to check each sd
03:16 PM JT-Shop: ok
03:16 PM Tom_L: what specific version?
03:17 PM JT-Shop: 0.7.3, 0.7.2, 0.7.1 & 0.7.0
03:18 PM Tom_L: all i have are the .changes and .buildinfo files
03:18 PM Tom_L: back to 0.7.2
03:18 PM Tom_L: it must not keep the rest
03:19 PM JT-Shop: no prob they are not important
03:19 PM JT-Shop: the source code is there for each one
03:19 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't know what to do with those either
03:20 PM Tom_L: i could build them if i knew how to roll back
03:21 PM Tom_L: i doubt anybody is going to wander back that far now
03:27 PM mrec: there's no preview available for G64 settings?
03:29 PM mrec: I have some profiling here generated with freecad, the Z steps slow down milling quite a bit
03:29 PM mrec: https://pastebin.com/v46D4f5g
03:29 PM mrec: that's just a part of it...
03:30 PM mrec: converting various circles to a spiral already gave me 3 minutes
04:39 PM perry_j1987: hows it goin
04:45 PM JT-Shop2: going real good here... no car in my way in the shop
04:46 PM JT-Shop2: and I got paid today
04:51 PM perry_j1987: nice
04:55 PM xxcodery: way to go
04:56 PM JT-Shop2: I thought I was down to 1 more conversion but the owner told me this morning that he has several more conversions for me to do
04:57 PM JT-Shop2: no rest for the weary
04:57 PM JT-Shop2: time to tuck the hens in and read them Chicken Little...
05:02 PM xxcodery: lol
05:02 PM xxcodery: reward for job well done is more jobs
05:07 PM JT-Cave: yep, he is much more productive now that's for sure
05:09 PM JT-Cave: and the work is interesting converting older equipment some older than the start of WW1
05:13 PM xxcodery: :) bet its lot of fun
05:14 PM JT-Cave: it's pretty interesting for sure and no pressure to finish on some timetable
05:25 PM Tom_L: it's nice having kids at machine shops..
05:25 PM Tom_L: nice source for carbide cutters they toss out
05:26 PM Tom_L: just got a 3/8 6 flute 030r
05:26 PM Tom_L: used once and done
05:26 PM xxcodery: what was wrong with that endmill
05:26 PM Tom_L: nothing
05:26 PM xxcodery: geez lol
05:26 PM Tom_L: i'll show you
05:27 PM JT-Cave: Current updated FPGA card order is:
05:27 PM JT-Cave: 7I92Tx Production cards at assembly
05:27 PM JT-Cave: 7I95T Proto cards at assembly
05:27 PM JT-Cave: 7I80HDT Artwork nearly done
05:27 PM JT-Cave: 7I76ET Design stage
05:27 PM JT-Cave: (many changes including push-pull field outputs
05:27 PM JT-Cave: so outputs can do sinking, sourcing or both
05:27 PM JT-Cave: and require no flyback diodes)
05:28 PM JT-Cave: just saw this post from Peter on the FPGA cards
05:31 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/carbide_6flute1.jpg
05:31 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/carbide_6flute2.jpg
05:32 PM Tom_L: probably a $500 cutter
05:32 PM JT-Cave: nice score
05:32 PM JT-Cave: why so high a price?
05:32 PM xxcodery: wow its barely used
05:32 PM xxcodery: maybe less than 10%
05:32 PM Tom_L: just a guestimate
05:32 PM Tom_L: but it's coated and radius'd
05:33 PM xxcodery: $500 is something like inch diameter and 6" flute length I would think
05:33 PM xxcodery: but then I use company tools so dunno exact
05:33 PM xxcodery: anyway good score indeed
05:33 PM JT-Cave: more like $100 or less
05:34 PM Tom_L: you've heard the fish story before ehh?
05:34 PM Tom_L: that's what he told me
05:34 PM Tom_L: :)
05:35 PM JT-Cave: https://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/38dia6flute010radnacocoatedhardmill.aspx
05:35 PM Tom_L: yeah i looked
05:36 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/temp/IMG_2421.jpg
05:36 PM xxcodery: well its still awesome score
05:36 PM Tom_L: that one probably was though
05:37 PM Tom_L: 1.25 iirc
05:37 PM xxcodery: length do affect price by pretty lot, so probably $200 or more
05:38 PM xxcodery: I still remember that fiberglass job. it come with cart worth of 1" tools. all very expensive but reused and reground over and over and...
05:39 PM xxcodery: one of .75 tool was at .695" lol
05:39 PM xxcodery: big tools is to remove massive amount of material, we used smaller tools that do final cut so radius is not a concern
05:40 PM xxcodery: smaller tools we just recycle
05:40 PM xxcodery: man fiberglass eats tools.
05:41 PM CloudEvil: Does diamond tooling last?
05:42 PM CloudEvil: Or is it just carbide abused
05:42 PM xxcodery: carbide tools.
05:42 PM JT-Cave: wood is very abrasive on tools
05:42 PM CloudEvil: Depends a fair bit on species and soil
05:42 PM * JT-Cave calls it a day
05:43 PM xxcodery: well its very very much cheaper to just keep using same tools reground and reground than expensive tools that is expensive to replace and lasts 10 times longer.,
05:43 PM JT-Cave: yep it does vary quite a bit
05:44 PM CloudEvil: at what point does a cutter grinder start to make sense?
05:45 PM xxcodery: cloud really depends on jobs etc
05:45 PM xxcodery: fiberglass it made sense since reground is much cheaper than replacing
05:45 PM xxcodery: fiberglass makes tool life very short
05:45 PM xxcodery: given job it would use 3 to 5 large endmills. thats a lot of money
05:46 PM xxcodery: (each tool type, which we used 3 of) so total is 8 tools used or sometimes more
05:48 PM xxcodery: whats fun is job lot would be around 25 parts. so thats just massive tool cost if not reground
05:54 PM Tom_L: CloudEvil, on large tools
05:55 PM Tom_L: and most shops send them out for grind
05:56 PM Tom_L: shops around here just replace so the monkeys don't have to figure D comp
05:57 PM Tom_L: from carbide i think the next step would be ceramic
06:00 PM Tom_L: resharpening coated cutters really has no advantage as you lose the coating
06:11 PM xxcodery: some services do offer recoating
06:11 PM xxcodery: I still remember boss being pissed off at one of resharping services
06:11 PM xxcodery: they just recoated tools! they forgot to resharp
06:12 PM xxcodery: so they sent tools out to them so they could resharp then recoat
