01:12 AM Deejay: moin
04:06 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:33 AM travis-farmer is now known as travis_farmer
04:36 AM travis_farmer: G'Morning
05:06 AM JT-Cave: snowing
05:14 AM travis-farmer: Snowing? 60F here in Maine... odd weather
05:16 AM travis-farmer is now known as travis_farmer
05:19 AM JT-Cave: 31°F here
05:19 AM JT-Cave: snowing harder now
05:21 AM travis_farmer: Maine usually has had at least one snowfall by now... but so far, none where i am. not sure about northern Maine
06:05 AM Tom_L: morning
06:06 AM Tom_L: 23F
06:08 AM travis_farmer: it just seems unnatural that a lot of places have snow and freezing temps... and here in maine it is warm enough to go outside without a coat or sweater...
06:09 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:37 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, debs are ready
06:38 AM JT-Cave: ok
06:53 AM JT-Cave: I just pushed a fix for pci cards getting the pins
08:07 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, just pushed a fix for setting up the gui
08:49 AM Tom_L: ok
09:21 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, 53 is up
09:28 AM JT-Shop2: ok
10:57 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:09 AM JoseIgnacioRomer: Yay i fixed my boiler just in time
11:29 AM mrec: camotics doesn't seem to like linuxcnc named functions
11:32 AM JT-Shop: wow buildbot on github has 652 open issues!
11:42 AM pere: popular package, probably seriously understaffed, like the rest of us.
11:45 AM JT-Cave: it's also broken, I can't install it and tried 3 different ways
11:46 AM pere: I managed to install it once. how are you installing it?
11:46 AM JT-Cave: I tried pip and python setup.py and building
11:47 AM pere: why not apt install?
11:47 AM JT-Cave: didn't look there yet
11:47 AM pere: buildbot and buildbot-worker seem like the relevant packages.
11:47 AM JT-Cave: apt is my preferred way but all the instructions say pip or setup.py
11:48 AM JT-Cave: well there you go I'll give that a try
11:48 AM JT-Cave: I'm installing on a headless pc
11:48 AM pere: I am sure they do, but then again, a lot of people believe it is perfectly fine to download random binaries from the internet and run them as root.
11:48 AM JT-Cave: and they have python3-buildbot
11:49 AM pere: I suspect it is only a empty metapackage.
11:56 AM JT-Cave: I suspect a nap in my near future
11:57 AM pere: let me know if the debian package documentation is insufficient.
11:57 AM pere: JT-Cave: what are you planning to build?
11:58 AM JT-Cave: ok, first trying to build mesact then linuxcnc perhaps
12:05 PM travis-farmer is now known as travis_farmer
12:34 PM roycroft: avid cnc use stepper motors with de-9 connectors on the cables, close to the motor body
12:34 PM roycroft: does anyone here do that, and if so, are there any emi issues with using those connectors?
12:35 PM Tom_L: would that connector handle the current?
12:35 PM Tom_L: and no i don't
12:35 PM roycroft: that's another consideration but avid sell a lot of machines, and they use 420oz*in nema 23 motors in many of them, with those de-9 connectors
12:36 PM roycroft: i should think they can handle the current or avid would not use them
12:37 PM roycroft: i'm not sure de-9 is what i would want to use, but i am thinking about having some kind of plug near the motor, so that if the motor needs to be swapped nothing has to be done with the main wiring harnass
12:37 PM roycroft: i do have some shielded de-9 connectors, and if i use shielded cables and construct them carefully there may be no problem
12:37 PM roycroft: the avid ones do not appear to be shielded, though, but i'm not certain about that
12:37 PM Tom_L: iirc mine are rated for either 3 or 4A i forget
12:37 PM Tom_L: the stepper
12:38 PM Tom_L: i have the driver set for 3.5A iirc
12:38 PM Tom_L: so it must be more than that
12:39 PM Tom_L: i would think that connector would get warm/hot
12:39 PM Tom_L: and i used 18ga wire iirc
12:40 PM roycroft: the cables i bought for my mill are 18ga shielded
12:40 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Wiring/Wire2.jpg
12:40 PM roycroft: i don't recall how much of that cable i got, so i don't know whether i'll be able to use it on my router or not
12:40 PM Tom_L: i probably have 80-90' left
12:41 PM roycroft: i'm not at that point in my design
12:41 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Wiring/Wire1.jpg
12:41 PM roycroft: i'm getting pretty close on a working model for the y axis rack and pinion configuration
12:42 PM roycroft: and i'm thinking about a motor disconnect so that i can make sure there's room for it by the brackets
12:42 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't have a disconnect between the motor and driver personally
12:42 PM Tom_L: it will blow the driver if it ever was switched under power
12:43 PM roycroft: well there will be one at the control panel already
12:44 PM roycroft: but i can ensure that it won't disconnect under power
12:45 PM roycroft: and that can certainly be done with d-sub connectors - they can be physically screwed together
12:45 PM roycroft: and in other applications where it's critical to not switch under power, i've tied/wired the connectors together in the past to ensure that one is reminded not to do that
12:46 PM roycroft: as well as adding a set of suspenders to the belt
12:48 PM roycroft: i am planning on using neutrik connectors at the panel
12:48 PM roycroft: perhaps i can use them for the inline connections as well
12:50 PM roycroft: there are shielded xlr connectors, but not with enough pins
12:50 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: Tom_L has a good point about plugging. Never, ever hot plug.....very dangerous. a definite smoke letter-outer.
12:51 PM roycroft: yes, rouguish
12:51 PM roycroft: but i can ensure that won't happen
12:51 PM roycroft: at least not without serius intent
12:52 PM roycroft: if i use d-sub connectors, and they are screwed together and then wire wrapped around them, the only way to disconnect them under power would be to cut the wire and unscrew them
12:53 PM roycroft: i'm mostly worried about emi issues
12:53 PM roycroft: and i'll ensure that whatever i use has enough current capacity for the application
12:54 PM * roycroft thinks he might already have the neutrik panel connectors for the router
01:08 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: if they have metal shells they should be fine
01:16 PM JoseIgnacioRomer: if they dont have metal shells you can use that EMI shielding tape, either the fabric or the sold copper to create a continuous shield from the cable shield to the connector shell
01:19 PM roycroft: that's always the key to shielding
01:19 PM roycroft: to ensure continuity of the shielding
01:19 PM * roycroft refers the channel to the story he related about the hydroelectric plant a few weeks ago
01:20 PM roycroft: i have some metal-plated plastic de-9 shells that work fine for shielding
01:21 PM roycroft: i should check to see if i have those neutrik connectors already
01:25 PM roycroft: well, access to where that stuff is stored is a bit messy right now - it's one of my weekend projects to tidy up that part of the shop, so i'll check later
01:25 PM roycroft: i think i can work with the principle of being able to add inline connectors by the motors
01:39 PM roycroft: looking at my order history i think i only bought the 3 pin neutrik connectors to feed power from my motor power supply to the control panel
01:54 PM JT-Cave: hmm buildbot-www is not in the debian repo I don't think
02:37 PM travis-farmer is now known as travis_farmer
04:02 PM travis-farmer is now known as travis_farmer
04:33 PM JT-Shop: working on a pc standing up is for the birds
04:37 PM roycroft: i'm loving the stand up desk
04:38 PM roycroft: i don't think i'd want to work that way all day long, though
04:38 PM roycroft: but most of the day
04:39 PM roycroft: i was just out at the fair site getting some wood to use to build the new ballot box for next year's election
04:39 PM roycroft: our site manager is a young woman just out of college
04:39 PM roycroft: i had a hard time keeping up with her as we were walking around looking for some wood
04:40 PM roycroft: and i was out of breath, just from that
04:40 PM roycroft: that's from sitting at a desk all day long during the week
05:01 PM JT-Shop: after a half an hour my feet said very loud SIT DOWN
05:11 PM roycroft: were you standing on a concrete floor?
05:11 PM roycroft: if so, put a stall mat in front of the desk and try again
07:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/coupler/Coupler_brass5.jpg
07:38 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/coupler/Coupler_brass6.jpg
07:39 PM Tom_L: about the size of a #2 pencil eraser
07:41 PM CloudEvil: :)
07:55 PM xxcodery: nice work
08:35 PM roycroft: so i went out to the fair site today to gather some wood for making a ballot box for next year's election
08:35 PM roycroft: the site manager told me there is plenty of wood to pick from, and to bring a chain saw and pulling apparatus
08:36 PM roycroft: i went out with a couple chain saws and a bunch of other equipment, ready to cut up some big logs and haul some bits back
08:36 PM roycroft: we drove all over the place, found lots of logs, but they were all fairly inaccessible
08:37 PM roycroft: finally, she turned to me and asked "why can't you just use a pre-milled slab from our yard?"
08:37 PM roycroft: we went over to the yard, i found a nice maple slab instantly that was perfect for what i need to do, and we loaded it up on my pickup
08:38 PM roycroft: i have no idea why she did not offer that up front - there were dozens of big slabs there
