12:29 AM pere: how many types of scales are there? are they all wiring compatible?
12:40 AM mrec: 5V ttl I still have my mesa card lying around but the TTL encoders will change that
12:40 AM pcw-home: Fine, no issues at all with Efinix
12:42 AM CaptHindsight[m]: \0/
12:42 AM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.digital-readout.com/product/sino-ka300-linear-encoder/
12:43 AM CaptHindsight[m]: mrec: https://digital-readout.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/KA-sereis-linear-scale-installation-guide.pdf
12:44 AM CaptHindsight[m]: they have done a good job of copying glass linear scales
12:45 AM mrec: there were some magnetic encoders installed on that mill.. it was interesting to play around with it but they're absolutely worthless on a CNC mill
12:46 AM CaptHindsight[m]: I have not yet put their feet to the fire and measured them using laser Interferometry
12:46 AM mrec: the way they were installed - unshielded (so they got full with chips), and the adhesive wasn't strong enough so the magnetic strip went loose relatively quick
12:47 AM CaptHindsight[m]: magnetic encoders are fine if used and installed properly
12:47 AM mrec: on the lathe they lost contact due to chips
12:50 AM CaptHindsight[m]: I have about 100 glass scale pulls from older machines
12:50 AM CaptHindsight[m]: mostly Heidenhain
12:50 AM xxcodery: you work as cnc parts part out companmy?
12:51 AM CaptHindsight[m]: so unless I need something really long I'm set for the next couple years
12:51 AM CaptHindsight[m]: xxcodery: no I mostly do R&D and build mostly custom machines
12:52 AM xxcodery: cool :)
12:52 AM CaptHindsight[m]: I just end up with lots of older equipment that I update or use for parts
12:53 AM CaptHindsight[m]: lots of semiconductor fab equipment and similar
12:55 AM CaptHindsight[m]: RTAI is now working on 5.4 kernels
12:56 AM CaptHindsight[m]: was running today <8uS jitter on Ryzen
12:57 AM CaptHindsight[m]: he had an RT kernel running at 0.8uS on a Ryzen board without networking running a week ago
12:59 AM CaptHindsight[m]: 5.4 kernel is from about 2 years ago
01:00 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:07 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:07 AM CaptHindsight[m]: so should support hardware from early 2020 and earlier
01:07 AM mrec: CaptHindsight[m]: which connectors do you use for connecting motors?
01:08 AM xxcodery: just bad
01:09 AM mrec: the rating itself was never an issue here but how often they can be connected
01:09 AM CaptHindsight[m]: xxcodery: https://i.imgur.com/6WZIWu0.jpg and red oxide treated fasteners :)
01:11 AM CaptHindsight[m]: mrec: durable connectors need a wiper and lubrication
01:12 AM CaptHindsight[m]: AC outlets don't survive into the hundreds of cycles under load
01:14 AM mrec: poor mans EDM
01:14 AM CaptHindsight[m]: we made some quick connects that had a sponge with oil and a wiper so every cycle of connect and disconnect the pins were refreshed
01:14 AM mrec: that also happened here with the cheap connectors they partly burned away
01:15 AM CaptHindsight[m]: they were rated for a few thousand cycles
01:18 AM CaptHindsight[m]: Lemo makes some nice ones but you really pay for them
01:19 AM CaptHindsight[m]: ~$100 ea for 4-8 pins, quick connect
01:19 AM mrec: that's just not worth it for my machine I'd rather sell my machine to another beginner and start something new
01:20 AM mrec: I'm happy with the machine but I'm clearly hitting limitations here
01:23 AM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.neutrik.com/en/neutrik/products/xlr-connectors/xlr-cable-connectors
01:27 AM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Neutrik/NC4MXX?qs=RMiEzKrVl1ceI5POQM8YGg%3D%3D $5 ea
01:27 AM CloudEvil: CaptHindsight[m]: On a tangentially related matter, I have wondered what current a USBC connector can take if you flow cooling oil through it
01:27 AM CloudEvil: :)
01:28 AM CloudEvil: I should email the USB implementor forum.
01:29 AM CaptHindsight[m]: for how long and at what temp?
01:32 AM CaptHindsight[m]: size and length of the pins should give you a ballpark
02:17 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning
04:43 AM Tom_L: morning
04:52 AM JT-Cave_ is now known as JT-Cave
04:52 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:47 AM JT-Cave: I wonder what happened to my blue dot?
06:01 AM travis_farmer[m]: good question, mine is missing too đŸ˜‰
07:45 AM JT-Cave: I might invest in a nut splitter for the exhaust flange nuts
07:46 AM JT-Cave: but don't know if I can get to all three...
07:46 AM travis_farmer[m]: use fire...
08:01 AM skunkworks[m]: Not had good luck with nut splitters.
08:32 AM JT-Shop_ is now known as JT-Shop
08:32 AM JT-Shop: as in not splitting the nut?
08:47 AM skunkworks[m]: that and never able to fit the thing where you need it..
09:06 AM MrSunshine_ is now known as MrSunshine
09:42 AM CaptHindsight[m]: gas wrench and replace with SS
09:45 AM skunkworks[m]: or a angle grinder...
09:53 AM roycroft: we're going to have snow in the passes this weekend
09:53 AM roycroft: first time this fall
10:08 AM roguish[m]: JT-Shop: small grinder down the side of the nut. maybe even a dremel with friction disk on it.
10:10 AM roguish[m]: slow and carefully.......
10:48 AM skunkworks[m]: supposed to be in the 70's here this weekend.
10:55 AM roycroft: it's going to start raining at 3pm here
11:08 AM Tom_L: it _is_ raining N of you
11:13 AM ve7it: raining on Vancouver Island... not a monsoon, but it has got everything wet finally
11:18 AM roycroft: it seems that the rain is coming from the northwest
11:19 AM roycroft: the wind is southerly here, and to the west, up to the washington state line, where it shifts to northwesterly
11:21 AM roycroft: and the rain is at the washington state line right now
11:23 AM * roycroft is very much looking forward to the rain
11:27 AM satiowadahc1171[: Cloudy, rainy day, hot coffee, configuring a new mill interface. Its a hard day I say.
11:29 AM roycroft: i got my yard tidied up yesterday
11:29 AM roycroft: i'm ready for the rain
11:29 AM roycroft: i got some cad work done last night, but not for my router
11:30 AM roycroft: i am still behind on that work, but we count ballots on sunday, and after that i'll have a lot of free time
11:43 AM roycroft: home depot just sent me a promo coupon - $75 off a $500 purchase
11:43 AM roycroft: so i ordered the chainsaw from them
11:44 AM roycroft: oddly, they charge $20 over msrp for the verison with the 20" bar, but they charge msrp for the version with the 24" bar
11:44 AM roycroft: i'll use a 20" bar most of the time, but i'll want the 24" bar occasionally, so that's what i ordered
11:45 AM satiowadahc1171[: With a 5 axis spindle and allowing them between syncing revolving around a tool point, or using joint positions, would that switch ever be used in a program?
11:45 AM satiowadahc1171[: IE G0 C90B90, Moves X,Y,Z such that tooltip doesn't move, or C90B90 just moves C and B
12:15 PM * roycroft just ordered chaps and a logging helmet, so he can feel better using the new scary saw
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh he's a lumberjack and he's........
01:44 PM travis_farmer[m]: lol
02:07 PM unterhausen: Someone I know just got a chainsaw recently and I keep trying to talk him into protective gear without success
02:07 PM unterhausen: It's not a matter of money, he makes over $300k
02:18 PM travis_farmer[m]: tell him pride means nothing, when he is carrying his arm into the ER
02:29 PM Tom_L: unterhausen, alot of the protective gear you need for anything is between the ears
02:29 PM travis_farmer[m]: true
02:30 PM unterhausen: I know all the good injuries you can get with a chainsaw and cutting down trees and none of it budged him a bit
02:31 PM Tom_L: just adds extra weight when you're climbing :)
02:31 PM roycroft: i've never come even remotely close to injuring myself with a chainsaw
02:32 PM Tom_L: neither have i
02:32 PM roycroft: but chaps are good to have and wear regardless
02:32 PM roycroft: and as far as the helmet, i already wear ear protection and a face shield when i use a saw
02:32 PM roycroft: the helmet i got has a mesh face shield, not solid plastic, and it has a neck protector on it
02:33 PM roycroft: and the earmuffs are built-in
02:33 PM roycroft: it's more for convenience and comfort than safety, compared to what i already use
02:34 PM xxcodery: unterhausen 300k it means massive loss of income for family if he gets maimed or die
02:36 PM roycroft: chaps, i think, will be more useful when limbing/bucking downed trees than when felling
02:36 PM roycroft: and another advantage of wearing them, besides safety, is that if they get all muddy and stuff they can be taken off and stowed before i get back in the truck
02:36 PM travis_farmer[m]: i watched a helmet protect a guy when the tip of the bar kicked the saw up when he was limbing out a fallen tree. pro arborist (even they make mistakes)
02:37 PM roycroft: i don't normally wear a helment when operating my chainsaw
02:37 PM roycroft: but that will change when i get my new one
02:38 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016YVOHPM
02:38 PM roycroft: i'm getting that one, but not from amazon
02:38 PM roycroft: actually, not quite that one
02:39 PM roycroft: the one i'm getting has a chin guard at the bottom of the visor
02:40 PM travis_farmer[m]: does your new saw have the chain brake?
02:40 PM roycroft: not the anti-kickback one
02:40 PM roycroft: that costs extra
02:40 PM roycroft: and i'm not sure i need it
02:41 PM roycroft: but it has a chain brake - i think all of them do
02:41 PM travis_farmer[m]: Hmmmm....
02:41 PM roycroft: i think that's required legally
02:41 PM xxcodery: I wonder how anti-kickback works
02:42 PM roycroft: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ECHO-24-in-59-8-cc-Gas-2-Stroke-Cycle-Chainsaw-CS-590-24/309389678
02:42 PM roycroft: that's the one i'm getting
02:42 PM roycroft: the anti-kickback one detects somehow when the saw jerks back
02:42 PM travis_farmer[m]: when the saw kicks up, your arm hits the chain brake lever, and stops the chain
02:42 PM roycroft: i don't know the mechanism
02:43 PM roycroft: oh, so it just replaces the standard brake with a piece of plastic that is close to your arm
02:44 PM roycroft: i've never made my living as a logger
02:44 PM roycroft: but i have used a chainsaw quite a bit over the years, and i do not recall it ever kicking back
02:45 PM xxcodery: thanks travis
02:45 PM travis_farmer[m]: no, the lever is positioned so when you grip the top bar of the saw, when the saw kicks, the saw rotates around your grip, and when the arm contacts the lever, it operates
02:46 PM roycroft: oh
02:46 PM xxcodery: only used chainsaw once in my young teens
02:46 PM xxcodery: kicked back only once when I hit another branch while cutting one
02:46 PM xxcodery: rest of day it was fine
02:47 PM travis_farmer[m]: i took a mini forestry class in high school, but have not worked in the woods
02:47 PM roycroft: then they have this, which prevents about 50% of all the cuts one wants to do:
02:47 PM roycroft: https://www.echo-usa.com/chainsaw-accessories/kick-guardâ„¢
02:48 PM * roycroft won't be getting that
02:48 PM roycroft: i learned early on to watch my nose
02:48 PM travis_farmer[m]: yeah, those are a PITA for pros
02:49 PM roycroft: while my chainsaw experience is not extensive, my tablesaw experience is
02:49 PM satiowadahc1171[: Are you a cut above the rest?
02:50 PM roycroft: and the reason i have all 10 fingers still is that i learned very early on that when i'm using the tablesaw, the blade is the only thing that i look at, and i never look away from it
02:50 PM roycroft: i translated that to chainsaws
02:50 PM travis_farmer[m]: same here. i only know what i learned in that mini class. but i use a tablesaw by trade
02:50 PM roycroft: i have had exactly one tablesaw mishap in my life, and it took off the tiniest bit of the tip of one finger
02:51 PM roycroft: it was an interesting situation, because it happened when i was working in a boat factory, which was a union shop
02:51 PM travis_farmer[m]: my father has had a few mishaps, i have had none (yet...)
02:51 PM roycroft: management were conducting a tour of the factory for a group of senior citizens
02:51 PM roycroft: the union objected to the tour, but they did it anyway
02:52 PM roycroft: when they got to where i was working, i found myself surrounded by about 30 seniors, while i was making a cut at the tablesaw
02:52 PM roycroft: in the middle of the cut one of them leaned right over the saw, and i averted my eyes for a moment to make sure he was not going to interfere
02:52 PM roycroft: and that's when it clipped the tip of my finger
02:53 PM roycroft: they took me to the hospital
02:53 PM roycroft: and they coerced them to treat me immediately
02:53 PM roycroft: so that i could get back to the plant before quitting time
02:53 PM roycroft: apparently the fines they pay on injuries are a lot lower of the employee can return to work the same day
02:54 PM roycroft: so i went back, but the er doc said i should not use that hand for a week
02:54 PM roycroft: so for the next week i went to work every day and did absolutely nothing
02:54 PM roycroft: because again, if i had to take time off the fines would have been a lot higher
02:55 PM travis_farmer[m]: Hmmm, i think i will wander out to my CNC and see how it has been doing in my post-op absence...
02:55 PM roycroft: then the insurance company offered me a $6800 settlement for the injury, after the employer had paid all the medical bills
02:55 PM roycroft: the employer begged me to accept the settlement
02:55 PM roycroft: the union wanted me to hold out for a lot more
02:55 PM roycroft: i looked at my finger and could not see where it had been cut
02:55 PM roycroft: and could not feel that it had been cut
02:56 PM roycroft: and decided that $6800 was a reasonable settlement (this was in 1982 or so)
02:58 PM roycroft: grr
02:58 PM roycroft: i still have to move my old bandsaw out to the fabrication shop
02:58 PM roycroft: i forgot about that
02:58 PM roycroft: the rain is now scheduled to begin at 4pm, so i *may* have just enough time to do it before the rain
02:59 PM roycroft: and we're down from a forecast of 18mm today to 6.5mm
03:05 PM Tom_L: our ground is so dry if either one fell and stopped for half an hour you'd never know it rained
03:06 PM roycroft: same here
03:06 PM roycroft: it's going to start raining every day, but it's going to take a week for the ground to get wet
03:07 PM roycroft: at least the smoke will go away today
03:07 PM roycroft: and the fires will start being contained after today
03:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 70's sun and wind, summer is back for a few days
03:19 PM xxcodery: finally rain here
03:19 PM xxcodery: finally aqi goes down too
03:26 PM roycroft: seattle and portland had the worst air quality of any major city in the world yesterday
03:29 PM Tom_L: 87F currently
03:29 PM Tom_L: breeze
04:16 PM unterhausen: The thing is the guy lives here in state college, is single, and makes $300k. He could buy all the PPE he needs for chainsawing with pocket change
04:21 PM roycroft: there's the "macho" gene that many men posess that causes them to act irrationally like that
04:24 PM unterhausen: well, he hasn't bought an oversize truck yet.
04:24 PM unterhausen: he's not macho, just the denying he can be hurt
04:25 PM unterhausen: I just had a kickback on my saw, it can happen to anyone
04:25 PM xxcodery: unter yeah in fact like I said earlier
04:25 PM xxcodery: he getting hurt is a massive loss
04:30 PM Tom_L: xx you missed the 'single' part
04:30 PM Tom_L: no dependants
04:48 PM xxcodery: ahh ok
04:48 PM xxcodery: yeah dunno if I earn 300k a year id be bit more careful
04:48 PM xxcodery: keep earning it
04:51 PM roycroft: it could be a religious thing, if it's not the macho gene
04:51 PM bjorkintosh: <roycroft> there's the "macho" gene that many men posess that causes them to act irrationally like that. Testosterone.
04:52 PM xxcodery: 3 ways, religion, testosterone, being surrounded by women or in least some somewhere
04:53 PM roycroft: i have plenty of testosterone
04:53 PM roycroft: but i don't have the macho gene
04:53 PM roycroft: ppe is important to me
04:54 PM roycroft: xxcodery: you forgot "just plain stupid"
04:54 PM xxcodery: there is always that yes
04:57 PM roycroft: as a rule, though, someone who makes $300k/year does not suffer from just plain stupic
04:57 PM roycroft: stupid
04:58 PM roycroft: there are always exceptions to rules, of course
04:59 PM satiowadahc1171[: is there a standard M code for dust collection enable? I know m7/m8/m9 are common but seems odd dust collection isn't a standard
04:59 PM bjorkintosh: it would be the same as conveyor on/off wouldn't it satiowadahc1171[?
05:00 PM bjorkintosh: chip conveyor on, chip conveyor off. I forget the specific M Codes.
05:00 PM satiowadahc1171[: Is that an mcode? I figure it should be the same one as usually a mill has one or the other
05:01 PM satiowadahc1171[: but not bith

07:30 PM roycroft: it is starting to sprinkle
07:30 PM roycroft: the heavier rain has been pushed back to 1am now, which is probably good
07:30 PM roycroft: since people around here forget how to drive in the rain
08:48 PM xxcodery: been raining here for a while
08:49 PM xxcodery: I wish I could smell at times like this
08:49 PM xxcodery: I bet air would feel so damn fresh
08:52 PM roycroft: it's off and on drizzle here
08:53 PM roycroft: but i have faith that actual rain will arrive sometime overnight
08:55 PM roycroft: most of the precipitation is still to the north, and the winds are still southwesterly, but there are some rainclouds in southern oreogn and off the southern oregon coast
08:56 PM roycroft: it will get here, one way or another
08:56 PM xxcodery: yep, even if you have to do rain dance
09:27 PM * roycroft is all about letting nature do what nature wants to do
09:28 PM xxcodery: :)
10:44 PM solarwind: You're technically part of nature
10:44 PM solarwind: so what you want to do is part of what nature wants to do
10:46 PM roycroft: sure, but that's different to trying to coerce the rest of nature, of which i'm a teeensy tiny insignificant little spot, to do what i want it to do
