#linuxcnc Calendar
12:10 AM CaptHindsight[m]: https://matrix.to/#/#LinuxCNC-Help:matrix.org I guess the matrix devs don't have a chart showing how rooms vs spaces works and why and how the rooms it automagically generates works
12:19 AM CaptHindsight[m]: I guess you're supposed to poke around and see how they work
12:48 AM Deejay: moin
04:14 AM travis_farmer[m]: G'Morning
04:16 AM pere: hi
04:16 AM Tom_L: morning
04:52 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:26 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:01 AM pere: impressive, 45 machines report to have installed linuxcnc in debian, and 32 used it last week, according to <URL: https://qa.debian.org/popcon.php?package=linuxcnc > :)
06:30 AM JT-Cave: today's job is to stand on my head and wire up a PLC that is inches from the ground
06:35 AM travis_farmer[m]: i do not envy you. i can't stand detail work, upside-down.
06:45 AM JT-Cave: that's why I only work about an hour at a time on it
06:47 AM travis_farmer[m]: i try to design stuff so it isn't inches from the floor. 😉 but sometimes, things just are what they are.
06:51 AM JT-Cave: these machines are old Italian copy lathes and the controls are built into the base at one end
06:56 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/customers/Foxy/Bacci/
07:05 AM Tom_L: is this the last one do convert?
07:15 AM travis_farmer[m]: wow, looks like an amazing machine!
08:13 AM Ma-Ryu[m]: Hi. I just learned that you cant send signsl to the mesa card if you are using linux as a virtual machine in virtual box.
08:13 AM Ma-Ryu[m]: I got the connection working but i cant get the motors to spin. Can someone spare me 10 minutes this week so we can have a chat about what could be the problem?
08:23 AM pere: Ma-Ryu[m]: are you using ethernet? I suspect the real time properties of the virtual ethernet card in virtualbox might not be very good.
09:01 AM JT-Shop: a virtual anything is just for sims
09:06 AM roycroft: even if you properly configure hardware pass-through in virtualbox, you're not going to get real time performance from the kernel
09:31 AM jpa-: some programs allow dedicating hardware resources such as CPU cores or PCIe cards directly to a virtual machine - but i'm not sure if even then you would meet the realtime needs of linuxcnc
09:58 AM skunkworks[m]: Linuxcnc needs a realtime connection between computer and external hardware. Virtualbox isn't going to do that.
09:59 AM roycroft: most hyperviors have a mechanism to allow virtual machines to directly access hardware
09:59 AM roycroft: which solves part of the problem
10:00 AM roycroft: but the kernel of the vm still cannot run preemptively
10:00 AM roycroft: the hypervisor is always going to take precedence
10:08 AM Ma-Ryu[m]: Hi. Yes. I stopped using VB
10:08 AM Ma-Ryu[m]: and now i have a working connection
10:19 AM perry_j1987: JT-Cave you need to dig a pit next to those machines to work on of course
10:23 AM JT-Cave: lol
11:29 AM Tom_L: like the old grease pits you used to see
11:44 AM roycroft: i am delighted to announce that my old pickup has gone to its new home, wherever that may be
12:43 PM bjorkintosh: Ma-Ryu[m], why were you running it in VB in the first place?
01:58 PM JT-Shop2: muffler and over axle pipes out...
01:58 PM * JT-Shop2 opened the garage door to let in some low humidity fresh air and escort a lizard out
02:18 PM roycroft: i am looking at getting a new chain saw
02:19 PM roycroft: i've been using an 18" poulan for years, and it's semi-ok for light use, but i need something a bit more poweful and a bit more reliable
02:19 PM roycroft: i'm considering an echl cs-590, with a 20" bar
02:19 PM JT-Shop2: Stihl MS391 with a 24" bar is sweet
02:19 PM roycroft: the saw can take up to a 24" bar
02:20 PM roycroft: the cs-590 has a 59cc engine
02:20 PM roycroft: stihl is a couple hundred dollars more
02:20 PM roycroft: but it would be my other option
02:20 PM JT-Shop2: you get what you pay for most of the time
02:20 PM roycroft: husqvarna is right out in my book
02:20 PM roycroft: i'm not a pro logger
02:21 PM roycroft: i may use it for a few hours at a time, but only a few times/year
02:21 PM roycroft: it seems that echo do a pretty good job
02:21 PM roycroft: i have an echo string trimmer and an echo leaf blower, both of which have worked flawlessly for years
02:22 PM roycroft: but yeah, it's kind of down to echo vs stihl, and whether it's really worth the extra money for the stihl
02:23 PM roycroft: i'd like to find someone who has or has used an echo chainsaw
02:23 PM roycroft: i don't need to be convinced that the stihl is a good saw
02:26 PM JT-Shop2: if you only use it lightly so long as it starts reliably that's the main thing
02:27 PM roycroft: yup
02:27 PM roycroft: and that's my main concern
02:28 PM roycroft: the poulain works, and has ok power (42cc, 18" bar), but it has always been finicky to start, and after it's been used for a while it stalls out when idling and can be hard to restart
02:28 PM roycroft: i never got it serviced, because pretty much everyone with a poulain saw has the same experience
02:29 PM roycroft: my other echo stuff starts right up after overwintering
02:29 PM roycroft: i've even forgotten to drain the fuel in the fall and the thing starts up in the spring
02:29 PM roycroft: so maybe that's what i'll get
02:29 PM roycroft: it's $418 at jerry's with a 20" bar
02:30 PM roycroft: we borrowed a ballot box for our board election this year, and i want to build a new one that we own for the future
02:30 PM roycroft: and i want to harvest some timber from our land to make the boards for it
02:31 PM roycroft: i just got approval to do that from the site manager, and want to have a reliable saw when i show up
02:31 PM roycroft: i figure now is the time to get the logs, so i can mill them and let them air dry for the better part of a year before i make the box
02:32 PM * roycroft is good at making up excuses to get new tools
02:33 PM JT-Shop2: axles are loose from the differential... I should drain the differential now
02:37 PM roycroft: i'm glad i don't do that kind of stuff any more :)
02:39 PM Tom_L: roycroft, i own 2 stihl saws and not a bit sorry i spent the extra cash
02:39 PM Tom_L: actually they paid themselves on the first tree
02:39 PM JT-Shop2: same here but more saws
02:39 PM Tom_L: i still have the old mac
02:39 PM Tom_L: and a stihl pole saw
02:40 PM Tom_L: and that hand over i showed you
02:40 PM roycroft: my impression is that if you make your living using a chainsaw a stihl is good to get
02:40 PM Tom_L: was out trimming a few more branches just now..
02:41 PM roycroft: but if you just want a reliable saw for occasional use then echo is pretty good
02:41 PM roycroft: and my impression of husqvarna is that they are pretty reliable, but don't compare well with stihl, and are very expensive to maintain/repair
02:42 PM JT-Shop2: I bought my 021 in 1997 and it still starts easy and runs great
02:43 PM roycroft: and while i am not planning on this being the last chainsaw i ever buy, i want it to be the last mid-size chainsaw i ever buy
02:43 PM Tom_L: my mac is probably older than me
02:43 PM roycroft: if i start doing urban logging in earnest i'll want something that can take a 36" or 48" bar
02:43 PM roycroft: and that's going to be a $1500+ saw
02:43 PM roycroft: i'm nowhere near needing that, nor even wanting that, right now
02:44 PM roycroft: the echo can take an 18" bar, and it's designed to go to 24"
02:44 PM roycroft: folks have used 27" bars on it
02:44 PM roycroft: so it has a nice range
02:45 PM * roycroft wonders if he can get $50 for the poulain, including a few extra chains
02:46 PM Tom_L: https://www.evergladesfarmequipment.com/stihl/grounds-care/pole-pruners/ht101/
02:47 PM Tom_L: gets low hanging branches rather well
02:47 PM roycroft: that would be nice
02:47 PM roycroft: i have a cheap electric pole saw that gets me by
02:48 PM roycroft: it's slow and wimpy, but i only need to use it a couple times/year, and it is 1/10th the cost of the stihl
02:50 PM roycroft: jerry's are really good about returns if i'm unhappy with a product, they're an authorized echo dealer (as well as stihl and husqvarna), and will match anyone's price
02:50 PM roycroft: so i can always get one and try it out
02:51 PM roycroft: https://www.echo-usa.com/chainsaws/cs-590-timber-wolf
02:51 PM roycroft: that is the model i'm looking at
02:53 PM Tom_L: i was using that today
02:54 PM Tom_L: i forget the model of my little one but it's a top over handle and balanced very well for climbing and single hand use
02:54 PM Tom_L: no longer made
04:00 PM JT-Shop2: crap I have to remove the cats to get to the tunnel stiffener bolts in the front
04:01 PM xxcodery: lure them out by snacks
04:09 PM CloudEvil: Just place your vehicle in a poorly lit area.
04:13 PM JT-Shop2: and naturally the nuts on the exhaust to the header are rusty...
04:14 PM roycroft: those are guaranteed to be rusty
04:15 PM roycroft: and if you're not the one who installed the exhaust it's almost guaranteed that there is no anti-sieze compound on the bolts
04:15 PM xxcodery: only time its not rusty is when it have completely rusted away and gone
04:15 PM * roycroft is reminded again how happy he is that he does not do that kind of work any more
04:24 PM JT-Shop2: nothing has been difficult so far...
04:26 PM roycroft: i don't like the grease and grime and stuff
04:26 PM roycroft: and the contorted positions required to crawl around to reach things
04:26 PM JT-Shop2: the car is pretty clean
04:26 PM roycroft: machining is much more pleasant work to do
04:26 PM JT-Shop2: and well I'm used to that after working on submarine overhaul for years
04:26 PM roycroft: in my view
04:45 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (178KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/hivIuNpacHEzewANVXLuCmHw/20221020_161752.jpg >
04:46 PM xxcodery: looks very clean
04:48 PM JT-Shop2: thanks
04:48 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (342KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/ABSKXUixQGqVRFjegKqaEuUL/20221020_161955.jpg >
04:50 PM JT-Shop2: that's the nuts I have to get off...
04:51 PM roguish[m]: JT: did ya broke it ????
04:54 PM JT[m]: Fixing a $2 part on the shift fork
04:54 PM roguish[m]: is that outside or inside the tranny?
04:55 PM JT[m]: Hmm this is not making it to irc
04:56 PM JT-Shop2: quite a bit of lag from the matrix
05:05 PM JT-Shop2: cross over pipe off
05:08 PM xxcodery: breaking bolt turns easy hour job into week job
05:09 PM JT-Shop2: yep being very careful with removing bolts... I'm not on the clock
05:09 PM xxcodery: yeah even with unlimited time just dont need to add to job :D
05:09 PM JT-Shop2: got the exhaust nuts soaking in break free for the night and will start working on them tomorrow evening
05:09 PM JT-Shop2: yup
05:10 PM JT-Shop2: not quite unlimited time...
05:10 PM JT-Shop2: turned 69 a couple of weeks ago
05:10 PM xxcodery: not unless we invent immortality
05:10 PM xxcodery: 47 somewhat soon myself lol
05:12 PM JT-Shop2: when I put it back together I'm using this https://www.eliteengineeringusa.com/1-4-thick-aluminum-ceramic-coated-tunnel-plate-with-thermal-abs/
05:12 PM JT-Shop2: the center console gets pretty hot
05:12 PM JT[m]: Inside the back of the transmission where 5th 6th and reverse live
05:12 PM JT-Shop2: quite a bit of lag from the matrix lol
05:13 PM xxcodery: usually few seconds for discord from irc
05:13 PM JT-Shop2: more than a few minutes atm
05:14 PM xxcodery: yeah seems pretty lagged now. weird
05:15 PM xxcodery: test message sent at 3:12 not gotten here yet
05:16 PM JT-Shop2: I see it over there
05:17 PM xxcodery: ping test teklls me discord and matrix is working fine
05:17 PM JT-Shop2: I wouldn't bother with the 1/4" thick tunnel plate if it didn't have the insulation
05:18 PM JT-Shop2: I don't drive the C5 aggressive usually
05:26 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (279KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/aUBcySazEbCwylqMzCKyPMRX/20221020_164737.jpg >
05:27 PM xxcodery: ah that finally arrived
05:27 PM Tom_L: seemed pretty instant to me
05:28 PM JT-Shop2: Tom_L, is in the Twilight Zone I think
05:28 PM Tom_L: what's the time stamp on the matrix side?
05:28 PM xxcodery: tom he sent it to matrix at 2:47
05:28 PM Tom_L: oh
05:29 PM JT-Shop2: 4:24
05:29 PM Tom_L: saus 5:25 jere
05:29 PM xxcodery: my test test test one havent yet lol. theres one more picture upcoming
05:29 PM Tom_L: here
05:29 PM xxcodery: its 3:27 here now
05:29 PM xxcodery: so around bit more than half hour
05:29 PM Tom_L: fell in the black hole and never returned..
05:29 PM JT-Shop2: yup
05:32 PM Tom_L: what happened to your blue dot?
05:32 PM Tom_L: not using a registered nick
05:33 PM JT-Shop2: hmm dunno
05:33 PM Tom_L: i noticed that when you swapped dishes
05:34 PM Tom_L: you use a regular jack under that or a tranny jack?
05:34 PM JT-Shop2: under ?
05:34 PM Tom_L: don't you have to take that rear end out?
05:35 PM JT-Shop2: yep, I'll use the atv/motorcycle jack to remove the rear carrier which includes the axles
05:35 PM JT-Shop2: then lower the differential and remove it from the transmission
05:36 PM JT-Shop2: then remove the back of the transmission after draining it of course
05:36 PM Tom_L: for living on a dead end road at the end of a dead end road, that thing looks pretty clean
05:36 PM JT-Shop2: it's pretty dusty lol atm
05:37 PM JT-Shop2: it's an art to get in and out without covering the vehicle in dust
05:37 PM Tom_L: are the A arms alum?
05:37 PM JT-Shop2: yup
05:37 PM JT-Shop2: lots of aluminum parts on the c5
05:38 PM Tom_L: i looked under the kid's civics when they got them and decided they can let the dealer change their oil etc
05:39 PM Tom_L: no jack point that i could find and the jack wouldn't fit under them anyway
05:39 PM JT-Shop2: yep, I let the dealer work on my Honda's
05:39 PM Tom_L: and a plastic belly pan covering it all
05:39 PM xxcodery: thats great for mpg, less so for diy maintance and repair
05:39 PM * JT[m] uploaded an image: (203KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/bzEkKsqLPrpJUkgsaNqjWpCw/20221020_170406.jpg >
05:40 PM xxcodery: ah it arrived
05:40 PM JT-Shop2: I got pre-paid maintenance on both Honda's
05:40 PM JT[m]: Enough fun for one day
05:40 PM Tom_L: are those SS?
05:40 PM JT-Shop2: yup, Borla
05:41 PM xxcodery: if timing is consient, my test message in 10 minutes lol
05:41 PM JT-Shop2: when I bought the Corvette it has glass packs and was much too loud
05:41 PM Tom_L: i don't really like the new noisy mustangs
05:42 PM JT-Shop2: but it was the correct color... and the last of the popup headlights
05:42 PM Tom_L: all that noise and you look up and they're still there
05:42 PM Tom_L: i like the color
05:44 PM Tom_L: have any trouble with the light mechanism?
05:45 PM JT-Shop2: lol they have bumpers that stop the lights when they go down and one was worn so the light went too far and the lights worked opposite until I fixed that $2 bumper
05:46 PM JT-Shop2: kind of funny turn on the lights and one went up and one went down
05:46 PM JT-Shop2: turn off the lights and one went up and one went down
05:47 PM xxcoder[m]: test test test
05:47 PM JT-Shop2: finally
05:48 PM xxcodery86: that was faster than predicted
05:49 PM xxcodery86 is now known as xxcodery
05:51 PM Tom_L: i don't think any of those pop up lights work that well on any make
05:54 PM JT-Shop2: I've not had any problems other that replacing the bumper
05:55 PM * JT-Shop2 calls it a day
07:44 PM roycroft: i got a foreshadowing of the next six months when i was out in the yard putting stuff away
07:44 PM roycroft: the rain started early, but only lasted a few minutes
08:41 PM xxcodery: signs of DOOOM
08:41 PM xxcodery: yeah cant wait for rain. been smokey here for a while
08:42 PM xxcodery: 200+ aqi yeserday and 161 aqi today
08:42 PM xxcodery: tomorrow is supposely 9 aqi. rain cleaned
09:07 PM roycroft: it was pretty smokey here today
09:13 PM xxcodery: this year smokey hellscope season wasnt too bad
09:14 PM roycroft: it looks like the rain will arrive at 2pm
11:09 PM skunkworks[m]: We got a turret for the emco compact 5!
11:09 PM skunkworks[m]: finally
11:13 PM xxcodery: nice
11:13 PM mrec: is anyone using chinese glass scales with his machine?
11:13 PM mrec: are there any drawbacks with them?
11:14 PM mrec: do they support some homing? eg. the scale starts at a certain position and before there's just no signal?
11:55 PM pcw-home: Usually they have an index signal
