01:10 AM mrec: did anyone try to use a hydraulic system with linuxcnc? I think about pressure monitoring as well; I wonder how accurate that can work
04:42 AM Tom_L: morning
04:55 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:01 AM Tom_L: does lcnc accept MDI = the same as MDI_COMMAND = ? i've never tried the short version
05:01 AM Tom_L: also i figured filter out :)
05:01 AM Tom_L: didn't know it was a required entry though
05:10 AM JT-Cave: what do you mean required entry?
06:39 AM Tom_L: i didn't know [FILTER] was required
06:45 AM JT-Cave: it's not required
09:37 AM GTKplusplus6432[: I'm still trying to figure out why sometimes my manual tool change macro doesn't set the proper tool offset
09:38 AM GTKplusplus6432[: I'm kinda at the point where I think there must be something wrong with settings the variable for the reference tool
09:38 AM GTKplusplus6432[: is there a way to check the value of named variables?
09:39 AM GTKplusplus6432[: and/or step through a subroutine line by line (I'm fairly sure it counts as a single block for single block mode)
09:49 AM JT-Shop: debug
09:51 AM JT-Shop: M0
09:51 AM JT-Shop: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/gcode/m-code.html#mcode:m0-m1
09:51 AM JT-Shop: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/gcode/overview.html#gcode:debug
10:14 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, it wouldn't let me build the config without filling in the filter entries
10:26 AM JT-Cave: opps, I see that now... gotta bug in checkconfig.py
10:26 AM Tom_L: if i leave it blank i get a build failed message
10:26 AM JT-Cave: work on it when I get home
10:26 AM Tom_L: also
10:27 AM Tom_L: it would be awesome if MDI_COMMAND would allow for multiple entries :)
10:27 AM Tom_L: np, had some free time this morning
10:28 AM Tom_L: but not a priority..
10:29 AM JT-Cave: just fixed and multiple mdi commands will be in the ini3, can't have duplicate keys in master because of python configparser
10:29 AM Tom_L: figures
10:29 AM Tom_L: how close is ini3 to merging?
10:31 AM Tom_L: what i'm trying to do is get my mill config set to work on the 7i96s as a test
10:31 AM Tom_L: some of it won't be able to be part of the mesact due to the custom nature of it
10:32 AM Tom_L: but i wanna see how close i can get
10:32 AM JT-Cave: try using the ini3 branch and see if it works for you
10:32 AM Tom_L: ok
10:32 AM Tom_L: just pull then checkout ini3?
10:33 AM Tom_L: or is it a separate fork?
10:34 AM JT-Cave: git fetch
10:34 AM JT-Cave: git checkout -b ini3 origin/ini3
10:34 AM JT-Cave: that will keep it in sync
10:35 AM JT-Cave: then you can use git gui to switch between branches
10:35 AM Tom_L: will that add ini3 to my repo?
10:35 AM Tom_L: on github
10:35 AM Tom_L: or is it there already?
10:36 AM JT-Cave: yes that will add ini3 to your local repo
10:36 AM Tom_L: i don't have to do that on the web interface?
10:37 AM JT-Cave: no
10:37 AM JT-Cave: just in a terminal in the repo dir
10:37 AM JT-Cave: gotta run
10:37 AM Tom_L: ok
10:46 AM Tom_L: ok hopefully i figured it out and did it right
10:54 AM Tom_L: the filter message is ok now in ini3 branch
10:55 AM Tom_L: tried building the config and error: updateini.py line 87 'MainWindow' object has no attribute 'frontToolLatheCB'
11:57 AM mrec: does anyone know how accurate those car oil pressure sensors are?
11:58 AM mrec: I finally ordered some hydraulic set
11:58 AM mrec: aliexpress.com/item/1005004387672717.html
11:59 AM mrec: I want to use that for the tailstock of my lathe
12:36 PM perry_j1987: mornin
12:43 PM roguish[m]: JT-Cave: you there????
01:46 PM GTKplusplus6432[: The gcode panel in the UI doesn't show the code being ran, though, but only the loaded file at the line the subroutine is running. M0 can work but I'd need to keep track of the code by hand. Is that the only way?
01:46 PM GTKplusplus6432[: I guess I could load the subroutine?
01:47 PM GTKplusplus6432[: Debug should work for what I need though
01:48 PM GTKplusplus6432[: Although the error doesn't always appears so I'm not sure how to handle it. I've always been terrible at debugging intermittent errors
01:57 PM JT-Shop2: roycroft, does the depth gauge on the TS 55 REQ include the track?
01:58 PM JT-Shop2: and I am truly impressed with the TS 55 REQ
01:59 PM roycroft: both
01:59 PM roycroft: there is a pointer for when it's on the track, and one for when it's not
02:00 PM roycroft: a lot of folks like to dis festool, and claim their stuff is overpriced
02:00 PM roycroft: but it really isn't
02:01 PM roycroft: it's excellent quality, and designed to be used by people who make money with their tols
02:01 PM roycroft: tools

02:18 PM Tom_L: sat must be making it's random rounds
02:18 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, did you catch that error i got ?
02:19 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:30 PM JT-Shop: hmm I wonder if the starlink ethernet port is just a lan port, I connected it to the internet port on the DIR-632 router...
02:30 PM JT-Shop: and I didn't get any connection
02:31 PM Tom_L: what model is the equipment?
02:31 PM JT-Shop: the D-Link or the Starlink?
02:32 PM Tom_L: starlink
02:32 PM Tom_L: i think
02:32 PM JT-Shop: gen 2
02:33 PM Tom_L: no place to plug it in?
02:34 PM Tom_L: from what i see you need a starlink ethernet adapter
02:34 PM Tom_L: unless it came with it
02:34 PM JT-Shop: got that
02:34 PM JT-Shop: hmm the old dish cable has labels plug into modem and on the other end plug into router
02:34 PM Tom_L: should plug into a router or maybe a switch?
02:34 PM JT-Shop: so I wonder if the starlink doesn'
02:35 PM JT-Shop: t need a router
02:35 PM Tom_L: probably the wan port on the router
02:35 PM JT-Shop: wan port?
02:36 PM Tom_L: it's generally a different color rj45
02:36 PM Tom_L: wide area net
02:36 PM JT-Shop: I have 8 lan ports and an internet port
02:37 PM Tom_L: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=What+does+the+Starlink+Ethernet+Adapter+do%3F&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiuxuGes9b6AhXeomoFHZLhCysQzmd6BAg_EAU&biw=1083&bih=721&dpr=1#kpvalbx=_cnNEY9C3Oti0qtsPh4OegAs_72
02:37 PM Tom_L: tried to not find a video...
02:38 PM Tom_L: https://api.starlink.com/public-files/StarlinkInstallGuide_Rectangular_English.pdf
02:38 PM JT-Shop: I think I'm going to unplug the old sat from the router and plug starlink into an 8 port switch
02:39 PM Tom_L: looks like it should go to the wan port on the router
02:39 PM JT-Shop: that's just the dish and wifi router
02:40 PM Tom_L: the wifi router doesn't have an ethernet port out?
02:40 PM roycroft: the starlink device might have a built-in router
02:41 PM JT-Shop: I think that my wan port is labeled internet
02:41 PM roycroft: but you can connect your router to that router
02:41 PM Tom_L: https://support.starlink.com/
02:41 PM roycroft: yes wan = internet
02:41 PM JT-Shop: https://shop.starlink.com/assets/documents/v3/Ethernet_Adapter_Guide_Rectangular.pdf
02:42 PM JT-Shop: the instructions don't say much lol
02:43 PM roycroft: they name their devices by shape?
02:43 PM roycroft: that was very helpful
02:44 PM xxcodery: isnt they have 2 versions, round and rect with same hardware inside?
02:50 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:50 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:50 PM JT-Shop: starlink wifi doesn't like the d-link wifi being next to it
02:53 PM roycroft: you should see if the starlink device can be put in transparent bridge mode, and the wifi disabled
02:53 PM roycroft: most of those gateway devices can do that
02:54 PM roycroft: but given the depth and quality of their documentation, it may be difficult to ascertain how to do it
02:54 PM Tom_L: https://spaceexplored.com/2022/01/28/how-to-use-a-third-party-router-with-starlink/
02:54 PM Tom_L: that mentions 3rd party routers
02:55 PM Tom_L: you use the phone to disable something in the router
02:55 PM Tom_L: bypass mode
02:55 PM roycroft: bypass mode = transparent bridge mode
02:55 PM Tom_L: i figured as much
02:55 PM roycroft: that is how i would do it
02:56 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:56 PM Tom_L: maybe we should mention it if / when he returns
02:56 PM Tom_L: :)
02:56 PM roycroft: yeah
02:56 PM roycroft: i noticed he disconnected just as i was responding
02:57 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop_, if you haven't gotten it already: https://spaceexplored.com/2022/01/28/how-to-use-a-third-party-router-with-starlink/
02:57 PM JT-Shop_: thanks
02:57 PM Tom_L: use your phone to enable bypass mode
02:57 PM JT-Shop_: I saw something about that
02:58 PM roycroft: transparent bridge mode just passes the wan port directly to the lan port
02:59 PM JT-Shop_: so in bypass mode I plug the starlink into the wan port?
02:59 PM Tom_L: yes i believe so
03:00 PM Tom_L: thru the ethernet adapter you got with it
03:00 PM roycroft: yes, jt-shop
03:02 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop_, once you untangle yourself from all the wires i did get an error on the ini3 branch
03:13 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:13 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:14 PM roycroft: woodpecker's have their edge rules on sale
03:14 PM roycroft: i just ordered some - i've been meaning to get some for a long time
03:15 PM roycroft: i have an incra edge rule but i'm not very happy with it
03:17 PM JT-Shop: hmm I guess now I need to turn on the d-link wireless...
03:18 PM JT-Shop: yup
03:20 PM JT-Shop: ok this is better 52.3 Mbps down and 11.3 Mbps up
03:24 PM JT-Shop: thanks for the help
03:26 PM xxcodery: nice
03:26 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, earlier i built the ini3 branch: tried building the config and error: updateini.py line 87 'MainWindow' object has no attribute 'frontToolLatheCB'
03:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: what is starlink up to with the router options? I haven't read all the drama
03:27 PM Tom_L: btw, your nick sparkles a bit now
03:28 PM JT-Cave: lol
03:30 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], look at that link i posted
03:56 PM JT-Shop: a guy came to look at the Delta X5 planer then pulls out his phone and tells me he can get one new for $1500...
04:01 PM roycroft: sure he can
04:01 PM roycroft: all he has to do his hop in his time machine and go back a few years to when they were still available new
04:02 PM roycroft: you put a helical head on yours, didn't you?
04:06 PM JT-Shop: yup and a wixley
04:07 PM roycroft: so it's a $2500 used planer
04:07 PM roycroft: i hope that guy's time machine works well
04:07 PM roycroft: and will be able to bring both him and the planer back to the future
04:21 PM JT-Shop: so $1k for the lux cut III $80 for the wixey, a few hundred to rebuild the gearbox...
04:21 PM JT-Shop: so maybe I'm asking too much at $3k
04:22 PM roycroft: i know it was a premium machine
04:22 PM roycroft: but yeah, $3k might be a bit high
04:23 PM JT-Shop: yeah now that I look at it
04:23 PM roycroft: it's hard to recover the gearbox rebuild cost
04:23 PM roycroft: $1.5k is way low though
04:23 PM roycroft: and that guy either has a time machine or is on crack
04:23 PM JT-Shop: yup
04:25 PM roycroft: did he find the price on his flip phone? :)
04:26 PM xxcodery: or fvree catalog book lol
04:27 PM roycroft: i'm dealing with that right now
04:27 PM roycroft: i finally put my old fastener cabinets up for sale on cl
04:28 PM roycroft: folks are beating me up because i said in the ad that they go for $50+ new
04:28 PM roycroft: the ones i have were made by stack-on
04:28 PM roycroft: stack-on have gotten out of that business, and are now only selling gun safes
04:29 PM xxcodery: interesting
04:29 PM roycroft: husky picked up their storage cabinet business, and husky make the identical product, except the frame is black instead of grey, and sell them for $50+ (more like $60-$80)
04:29 PM roycroft: but a google search for stack-on will give results for the ones i'm selling, in the $30 range
04:29 PM roycroft: except
04:30 PM roycroft: every vendor is out of stock
04:30 PM xxcodery: yeah people will always try stuff to lower price
04:30 PM roycroft: because they are no longer made by stack-on, and haven't been for a long time
04:30 PM roycroft: i'm asking $250 for all 12 of mine, so just under $21 each
04:30 PM roycroft: well under the last price of the stack-on ones
04:31 PM roycroft: and i'm throwing in a few hundred drawer dividers
04:32 PM roycroft: i don't think it's untruthful to post the price of the husky ones, since they are the exact same product, other than the color
04:32 PM roycroft: but apparently others disagree
04:35 PM JT-Shop: I did lower the price to $2,500 after seeing that I didn't pay $1,500 for the lux cut 3
04:42 PM roycroft: https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-15-3-hp-extreme-series-planer-w-helical-cutterhead/g1021x2
04:42 PM roycroft: that's the grizzly version of your thicknesser
04:42 PM roycroft: and it's $2795 new
04:42 PM roycroft: not the same quality components, but it's fairly similar
04:43 PM roycroft: and yes, it's an additional $300 for shipping, but grizzly have a warehouse in your state
04:44 PM roycroft: i don't know how close it is to where you live, but if it's not too far, then a person could pick it up and save the shipping cost
04:44 PM JT-Shop: that's more like my powermatic
04:44 PM JT-Shop: Springfield is 3-4 hour drive from here so doable
04:44 PM JT-Shop: I've been there a few times
04:45 PM JT-Shop: hmm it shows $2,695 here
04:46 PM JT-Shop: too bad it's out of stock
04:47 PM roycroft: that's the one with the spiral head
04:47 PM roycroft: look at the one on the right
04:47 PM roycroft: it has the helical head, is in stock, and is $2795
04:48 PM JT-Shop: odd when I clicked on the 15" straight then back to 15" spiral it changed
04:48 PM roycroft: i wish i had the space and the cash for a 20"
04:48 PM roycroft: but i have neither
04:49 PM JT-Shop: looks like they have 2 15 spirals
04:56 PM roycroft: i only see one 15" with a spiral cutterhead
04:56 PM roycroft: but six with a helical cutterhead
04:58 PM roycroft: https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-15-3-hp-planer/g0453
04:59 PM roycroft: that is the one i have, but with the spiral cutterhead
04:59 PM roycroft: oh, there
04:59 PM roycroft: https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-15-3-hp-planer-with-spiral-cutterhead/g0453z
04:59 PM roycroft: the one you were looking at
05:07 PM JT-Shop: yup if you click on the product group 15" spiral you get that one
05:15 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
07:15 PM * roycroft wonders if all owners of 4x4 pickups are dog owners
07:15 PM roycroft: i decided today to look around at used pickups to replace my current one, just to see what was out there and what the pricing was like
07:15 PM roycroft: i looked at a couple dozen trucks at about 8 or 9 dealers, and every single one of them, without fail, smelled like dog when i opened the door
07:16 PM roycroft: i don't know if all 4x4 truck owners own dogs and the smell is hard to get out, or if the dealers get some kind of dog-scented air "freshener" that they spray in the trucks in an attempt to attract buyers
07:17 PM roycroft: i looked at a couple vans at one dealer, as i may be the market for a new van at some point, and while the trucks at that dealer smelled like dog, the vans did not
07:18 PM Tom_L: more like baby puke?
07:19 PM roycroft: no, they were full-size service vans
07:19 PM roycroft: which is why i looked at them
07:22 PM roycroft: one of them had a gate behind the passenger compartment, with a working door, and a full set of wire shelves one one side, and metal drawers on the other side
07:22 PM roycroft: if i needed that stuff, it would have been a pretty good deal, but it's a service van and had over 200k miles on it
07:23 PM roycroft: service vehicles tend to get driven really hard, and if it did not belong to a car dealership or a company who have their own in-house vehicle maintenance department, there's a good chance it was not maintained well
09:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: well pickup truck drivers and owners are exactly the cream of the crop, I'd say know how to inspect the vehicle and know how to do the repairs youself
09:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: s/are/aren't/, s/youself/yourself/
09:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: like most used items
09:51 PM roycroft: i'm pretty good at sorting out used vehicles
09:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I was out looking at office space today. My standards are so low now that I'm just glad that nobody tossed their feces at me. All know it all contractors that own small office buildings with Fox News small talk.
09:58 PM roycroft: it's pretty amazing how so many folks talk like that when they are trying to sell things/services to people they have never met and know nothing about
09:59 PM roycroft: i guess that's what the bubble is all about
10:01 PM roycroft: and i expect to get a lot of that when i'm vehicle shopping
10:02 PM roycroft: because, you know, what kind of "lib" would be shopping for a 4x4 pickup
10:02 PM roycroft: although i do drive my prius onto the lot, but i don't necessarily park it right in front of the office
10:02 PM roycroft: so the sales critters don't know what vehicle i drove in
10:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lots of gaslighting
10:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: let them talk, they love to yap, they were even telling me that winters here soon and then it gets really hard to rent office space
10:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: thanks for the tip
10:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's like they only think that you will think whatever they tell you vs analyze the evidence on your own
10:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no wonder they are mostly boot lickers
10:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: i once had a guy try to sell me his car that had rings so shot that driving it around block caused it blow out a thick clod of white smoke like a smoke screen, you could not see the other side of the street
10:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he told me that they all do that, and lets make a deal
10:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I pulled up the rear carpet to expose the rusty frame and said the deal is I'm leaving before there is a murder
10:18 PM xxcodery: jeez!
10:29 PM roycroft: well i don't know if i'm going to buy a new-to-me vehicle
10:29 PM roycroft: i just thought i'd take a look because i'm really tired of my current pickup, and becaused used vehicle prices have come down
10:30 PM roycroft: and interest rates are going up, so if i find something i want to partially finance, now is probably the best time in the forseeable future
10:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I only buy used Toyota's now
10:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: because I don't really want to spend much time repairing or replacing
10:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they just go though lots of fuel
10:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: though/through
10:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: after fixing a few friends trucks I was really surprised by how un-tough Fords and GM's are
10:53 PM roycroft: i've mostly owned toyotas and chevys
10:53 PM roycroft: i did own a '52 ford pickup once
10:54 PM roycroft: that's the only pickup that i've owned that was not toyota or chevy
10:54 PM roycroft: but i did look at a few dodge rams today with cummings diesel engines
10:56 PM roycroft: the problem i'm having is that i have no need for a crew cab truck, nor do i want one, because a crew cab either extends the length of the truck more than i want or the truck has a short bed, which i don't want
10:56 PM roycroft: but it seems that crew cab trucks are all folks want these days
10:56 PM roycroft: and it's hard to find one that's not
10:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they use the cab more than the bed
10:56 PM roycroft: i guess that's so the dog can ride in the cab when there's a passenger
10:57 PM roycroft: but honestly, you're right
10:57 PM xxcodery: short body long bed is pretty rare
10:57 PM roycroft: most pickups are bought by dads who think they're macho or something, but have to haul a family around
10:57 PM xxcodery: long body appeals bit more to people who want "suv" truck
10:57 PM xxcodery: usually, shinybacks
10:58 PM roycroft: i just want to be able to put sheet goods in the back with the tailgate closed
10:58 PM roycroft: my current toyota doesn't do that, because it has a 6' bed
10:59 PM roycroft: anyway, i may head over to springtucky tomorrow to look at pickups
10:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Ford aluminum body with dodge drivetrain
10:59 PM roycroft: there's a lot of used car dealers there
10:59 PM roycroft: i went to the ones that were close to home today
11:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: how do steel bodies like the northwest?
11:00 PM roycroft: just fine
11:01 PM roycroft: which is why we export air-cooled vw buses and beetles back east
11:01 PM roycroft: ours are not rusted out
11:01 PM roycroft: we do not use salt on our roads
11:01 PM roycroft: we use sand on the rare occasions where anything is needed
11:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we even got a Fiero engine cradle rust free out of your area
11:02 PM roycroft: my '65 vw bus is a good restoration project
11:02 PM roycroft: i can probably get $3k for it as it sits locally
11:02 PM roycroft: i can get close to $10k if i put it on the samba and sell it to someone back east
11:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.millerwelds.com/-/media/inriver/ge200-the-little-torch-kit.pdf what size thread do these tips fit?
11:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe 1/4-32
11:14 PM roycroft: i have a baby/backpack torch, but it's a victor
11:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 1/4-32 confirmed, it just looked metric
11:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tip Extension thread size is 1/4-32 UNEF2B
11:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm working on the equivalent of a FFF/FDM printers filament extruder for glass rods
11:26 PM roycroft: that sounds like fun
11:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://labproinc.com/products/glass-rod-3mm-pyrex-48in feed stock
11:28 PM roycroft: are you going to make glass prints?
11:28 PM roycroft: just think
11:28 PM roycroft: 3d printed bongs
11:28 PM roycroft: you could make a fortune
11:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it can, at first I'm just fusing
11:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yes, I'm making CNC machines for bong making
11:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: CNC glass lathes and welders
11:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I can also cast glass using 3d printed molds
11:30 PM xxcodery: thats cool
