12:02 AM mrec: #define EMC_COMMAND_TIMEOUT 5.0 // how long to wait until timeout
12:18 AM jpa-: i never got particularly far with psng and it was too complex for me to modify, so i made my own yet another probe screen that doesn't use the separate macro gcodes https://github.com/HacklabJKL/sergei_cnc2/blob/main/linuxcnc/config/gladevcp_probetab.py
12:19 AM mrec: probe screen ng works nice ... aside of that nasty bug
12:20 AM jpa-: i didn't like the "go down, measure edge, return on top of the surface" sequence
12:22 AM mrec: I need to measure the center of a round stock it's convenient
12:47 AM mrec: I increased the timeout and added an error check now the probe screen works fine
12:53 AM mrec: impressive how the mesa card is in transit in the united states for 9 days now
01:43 AM Deejay: moin
04:46 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:47 AM Tom_L: pr 21 is up
04:48 AM Tom_L: 78F hi 96
04:53 AM JT-Cave: ok
04:54 AM XXCoder: all days, approxately 70f, slightly cloudy
04:54 AM XXCoder: except monday at 78f
04:54 AM XXCoder: bah been waiting for rains to finally happen. its bit late this year
07:02 AM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: IIRC, this was one of the bugs I found with PSNG as well. There is a fixed timeout for all gcode commands that doesn't work for long travel moves. I changed it to a polling system with a much longer timeout. This is in the python layer.
07:34 AM mrec: it just worked fine, I made an adapter for ER20 collets for my lathe / 4th axis in order to hold small sticks
07:34 AM mrec: I just have the full set of ER20 collets, ER25/ER32 only a few
07:35 AM mrec: https://www.chronos.ltd.uk/product/er25-collet-chuck-80-mm-diameter/
07:35 AM mrec: just something like that
07:35 AM mrec: but for 100mm
09:30 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:58 AM boozeman[m]: hah, seems like order of the 2 different size ddr4 dimm memory modules has affect to the latency š
10:50 AM andypugh: mrec: I have full sets of ER11, ER16, ER20, ER25, ER32. And part sets of 5C, 4NS, U2, Clarkson, tappingā¦.https://photos.app.goo.gl/kZBsYAkANmwW4sFXA
10:52 AM andypugh: I came very close to buying an ER8 set at the weekend too.
10:56 AM roycroft: i bought an er40 chuck and a set of er40 collets for my wood lathe last year
10:56 AM roycroft: i need to get an adapter for it so i can use it on my metal lathe as well
10:56 AM roycroft: but i'd rather get a 5c setup for the metal lathe
10:57 AM roycroft: for er20, my router table spindle uses that, and my cnc router shall as well
10:58 AM roycroft: i have 1/8", 1/4", 8mm, and 1/2" collets for er20 right now, as i'm just using router cutters at the moment
10:58 AM roycroft: i'd like to get a full set of er20 though, so that i can use end mills and the like in the router
11:03 AM * roycroft would prefer to use 5c in the metal lathe, but until he gets that together, an adapter to use the er40 collet would be useful
11:03 AM roycroft: s/collet/collet chuck/
11:06 AM JT[m]1: I like the way Andy has the collets organized
11:08 AM Jeratan[m]: does linuxcnc have an easy way of disabling the spindle if there's a probe tool fitted?
11:09 AM JT[m]1: In hal using an input
11:10 AM JT[m]1: spindle.n.enable
11:11 AM roycroft: that's pretty tiny
11:11 AM roycroft: almost horology size
11:12 AM Jeratan[m]: thx
11:35 AM JT[m]1: I hate just sitting and waiting
11:41 AM Tom_L: ok about enough of that for today. too hot to be trimming trees
11:48 AM JT[m]1: Tomorrow is nice, going to a winery
11:50 AM JT[m]1: Geez wife has been in the orthopedics for 1.5 hours
12:08 PM roycroft: do any of you have recommendations for uv coatings for headlights?
12:08 PM roycroft: or whether they are worth the expense?
12:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: clear 2k urethane (isocyanate)
12:11 PM fancierdoughnut7: Anybody here convert a pm 833tv or a 940? Maybe 949
12:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if it is for UV protection there is a small a family of UV absorbers that everybody typically uses as an additive
12:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Hindered amine light stabilizers, or HALS
12:13 PM roycroft: that stuff is expensive, capthindsight
12:14 PM roycroft: but the 2k urethane is what i've been reading about
12:14 PM roycroft: the question is: is it worth the expense?
12:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yes they make a nice profit from clear coatings
12:14 PM roycroft: it should only take a few minutes to polish a pair of headlights, after the initial cleanup
12:15 PM roycroft: mine are really yellow and hazy now, with some peeling of the factor uv coating
12:15 PM roycroft: i figure it's going to take me a half hour or so the first time to polish them up
12:15 PM roycroft: but it should take more like 10 minutes in the future, if i don't let them get too bad
12:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: without any UV coating they will stay clear for a few years
12:16 PM roycroft: really?
12:16 PM roycroft: a lot of folks say they ony last a few months without a uv coating
12:16 PM roycroft: and i don't mind polishing them twice/year if that's what i need to do
12:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: depends on Australia vs Scotland
12:16 PM roycroft: the uv coating costs $75 or so
12:17 PM roycroft: well where i live it's australia for 4 months out of the year and scotland the other 8 months
12:17 PM roycroft: and i'm planning on doing mine right before it turns into scotland
12:18 PM roycroft: perhaps the wise course of action would be to not use the uv coating the first time, and see how long it takes for them to start yellowing again
12:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the lower cost 2k clears will have less HALS
12:18 PM roycroft: i still have to figure out what polishing compounds to use
12:18 PM roycroft: which will be dictated in part, i should imagine, on what i find out in my paint locker
12:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.krylon.com/products/uvresistant-clear-coating/ is low cost and you can clean and reapply every couple years
12:19 PM roycroft: yeah, i've heard that the krylon stuff will help
12:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it will become a sacrificial coating
12:19 PM roycroft: iirc it's designed for protecting artwork
12:19 PM roycroft: that's fine
12:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: as you see the yellow is only near the surface where the UV penetrates
12:20 PM roycroft: i'm going to start with a P500 sanding disc to prep for the finer stuff, since i have peeling now
12:20 PM roycroft: so it would be easy to remove a sacrificial coating
12:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the krylon is solvent soluble after it dries, so removing it after it yellows is not too difficult
12:22 PM roycroft: so maybe this first time i'll put no coating on it and see how long it lasts
12:22 PM roycroft: if not long enough, i'll try the krylon the next time
12:22 PM roycroft: and if that still doesn't last long enough i'll think about using the 2k stuff
12:22 PM roycroft: i don't think i'll likely have this car for more than another five years anyway
12:23 PM roycroft: but i also anticipate that once my friends find out that i redid my headlights, i'll be asked to do it for some of them as well, and i don't mind doing that
12:24 PM roycroft: but that's where i'd draw the line at repeating the process often
12:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Hindered-Amine-Light-Stabilizer-HALS-82451_60797443868.html and mix it into a clear urethane
12:26 PM roycroft: btw, i ordered some lake country sponge pads for applying the polish
12:26 PM roycroft: they get decent reviews
12:27 PM roycroft: i like my festool gear, but i'm not going to pay $37 for a festool sponge pad
12:28 PM * roycroft isn't sure he wants to apply a coating that will make his headlights smell like china
12:31 PM roycroft: not that i'm in the habit of sniffing headlights
12:31 PM roycroft: but there are cats in my neighborhood that i don't hate
12:46 PM mrec: andypugh: 5c would certainly be nice, my er20 adapter plate is almost done it worked out well so far
12:47 PM mrec: tomorrow I need to re-wire the spindle encoder of the lathe since I installed a chinese BOB module on that system
12:47 PM andypugh: mrec: I just impulse bought a full 5C set. I blame you.
12:48 PM roycroft: 5c seems to be the best choice for a metal lathe
12:50 PM mrec: I only have a mini lathe, I can't expect too much from it
12:51 PM andypugh: Well, you need that style of collets for short workpieces. ER and Multisize need a certain minumum length of work to operate.
12:51 PM mrec: and I don't want to put too much money into it so sharing tools wherever I can is the goal here
12:52 PM mrec: I want to put in long sticks into the mini lathe (4mm diameter)
12:52 PM mrec: well not in particular mini lathe into my 4th axis which is also using a 100mm back plate
12:53 PM andypugh: mrec: You saw my āswiss latheā idea?
12:54 PM mrec: no
12:55 PM andypugh: https://youtu.be/YQRyqmleuuw
12:57 PM roycroft: if you're going to put long sticks into the spindle you'll want a spider on the back side of the spindle, and you might need some kind of steady rest farther outboard to keep your sticks from whipping round
12:59 PM mrec: that is really nice
12:59 PM mrec: I have some support on the other side already
12:59 PM mrec: the 4mm sticks are not extremely long
01:00 PM mrec: andypugh: thanks for that video, I think sooner or later I'll also make something like that
01:01 PM roycroft: that's essentially a follow rest that uses bushings instead of rollers and sits very close to the cutter
01:02 PM roycroft: from the cutter's perspective it is a swiss lathe though
01:02 PM andypugh: Yes, which is exactly the same principle as a Swiss lathe uses.
01:03 PM * ZincBoy[CAON][m] uploaded an image: (1534KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/IoXvUxwiDPaCoSQirpESuwHl/unknown.png >
01:03 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: On back side support: What happens if the spider comes loose and spindle goes to max rpm
01:03 PM roycroft: the spider should not come loose
01:05 PM roycroft: this is a hypothetical scenario that should never be manifested in the real world
01:05 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: 100% agreed but rushing a job and not checking it was tight cause the above.
01:05 PM roycroft: on the other hand
01:05 PM roycroft: students exist
01:05 PM roycroft: amateur machinists exist
01:06 PM andypugh: A couple of years ago this Amazon ad for a 5C collet chuck was listed at Ā£18. A friend bought one, and got exactly what is pictured. Bargain! https://www.amazon.co.uk/3911-125-Hardware-Accessory-Industrial-Accurancy/dp/B08D9L7GY8
01:07 PM roycroft: although sterling still had some value then
01:07 PM roycroft: but yeah
01:11 PM mrec: my lathe came with a steady rest but it's close to useless
01:11 PM mrec: it needs some modifications
01:23 PM roycroft: my lathe did not have either a steady rest or a follow rest when i got it
01:24 PM roycroft: i bought both from grizzly, who sold what is essentially the same machine (mine is a jet, and parts are no longer available from jet), but they don't line up right
01:24 PM roycroft: i have to modify them, and i've not gotten around to that yet
01:25 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about getting a new lathe, though, as the one i have is rather worn, and is bigger than i need
01:26 PM andypugh: I have forgotten where you are, but I saw a lovely old Holbrook today.
01:26 PM roycroft: i'm in oregon
01:26 PM roycroft: far from the rust belt
01:27 PM roycroft: a nice vintage lathe in good condition would be perfect
01:27 PM roycroft: but i might buy one new
01:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: andypugh: thanks for fixing the encoder component
01:28 PM roycroft: something like this might work well for me, and would lend itself to a cnc conversion if i decide i want to do that:
01:28 PM roycroft: https://www.precisionmatthews.com/shop/pm-1127vf-lb/
01:28 PM andypugh: The Holbrook in Reading is no use to you then. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/453201753420873
01:29 PM andypugh: (One of only two known with the full overhead drive)
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is there an updated 2.9 package for Bullseye or should I build it myself?
01:29 PM roycroft: i don't think so
01:29 PM roycroft: 1. it's in reading
01:29 PM roycroft: 2. i'd have to go to facebook to deal with it
01:29 PM roycroft: both are diqualifiers
01:30 PM andypugh: Yeah, but, itās a Model B No 8!
01:31 PM andypugh: Itās got whirling flat belts in abundance (especially if you can find the grinding attachments that the overhead drive is intended to power)
01:32 PM roycroft: something like this old sheldon would be nice:
01:32 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/224994032120
01:32 PM roycroft: actually, if i could reasonably shorten the bed of my current lathe that could be an option
01:33 PM roycroft: it's too long for what i need, and i would like to recover some of the floor space
01:33 PM roycroft: the ways also have excessive wear near the headstock
01:34 PM roycroft: an ideal modification would be to move the headstock past the heavy wear area and chop off the end
01:34 PM roycroft: but that would not be practical to do
01:35 PM roycroft: if i'm honest, although i'd like something a little smaller and tighter, i'll probably keep the one i have for quite a while
01:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: JT: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/debian-12.html your links are already breaking :(
01:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/11.4.0-live+nonfree/amd64/iso-hybrid/
01:59 PM JT[m]1: Ok
02:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/debian-13.html same here, maybe you'll have to use a more genric debian source link
02:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Debian keeps changing the repos
02:05 PM roycroft: hmm, all i found in my paint locker was some maguire's rubbing compound, and it says it's for hand-rubbing only
02:05 PM roycroft: i've used it with a buffing wheel, but not on plastics
02:06 PM roycroft: i'm not even sure i'll need any rubbing compound on the headlights
02:06 PM roycroft: i'll be going up to p4000 with the abrasive discs
02:06 PM roycroft: i may just need polishing compound after that
02:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: test it and see
04:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I currently made the mistake of upgrading from Bullseye to Bookworm, it take about 4-5 times longer than just a fresh install
04:08 PM JT-Cave: CaptHindsight[m], they all broke at the same time
04:09 PM Tom_L: iirc you have to build it on bullseye but on bookworm just point and shoot
04:11 PM Tom_L: it would be cool if somebody added bullseye to the buildbot but i don't see that happening
04:12 PM Tom_L: http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/dists/buster/2.8-rtpreempt/binary-amd64/
04:13 PM Tom_L: btw what's the difference between linuxcnc-uspace-rtai2.8.4 and linuxcnc-uspace2.8.4 there
04:14 PM Tom_L: is the rtai built on the 4.19 or the newer 5.xx rtai?
04:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: https://github.com/NTULINUX/RTAI
04:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: RTAI 5.3.2 for LinuxCNC
04:21 PM pere: Tom_L: we added bookworm to the github CI builds.
04:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: JT-Cave: was just an FYI, I need to build LCNC from latest source to get the fix for encoders
04:23 PM JT-Cave: about got it fixed and thanks for the heads up, I think I forgot
04:23 PM pere: Tom_L: you can find both debs and pdfs under the green V on <URL: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/commit/b4615c13fcd9abc54599fc93299722c9df5d8719 >.
04:28 PM JT-Cave: CaptHindsight[m], links should be fixed now
04:30 PM pere: hm, am unable to find the artifacts from the github builds. :(
04:30 PM pere: ah, here they are.... <URL: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/actions/runs/3099040405#artifacts >.
04:33 PM JT-Shop: yippie it's friday here
04:33 PM JT-Shop: and the temperature is falling
04:34 PM pere: only thusday here. :)
04:47 PM Tom_L: yeah, wind picked up out of the north here just a few min ago and it's cooling down
04:49 PM roycroft: it's just a little below average her
04:49 PM roycroft: e
04:49 PM roycroft: and it rained a little bit last night again
04:49 PM XXCoder: bah roy brag it up lol
04:49 PM roycroft: but just a light sprinkle
04:49 PM roycroft: enough to keep the fires from spreading fast
04:53 PM xxcoder[m]: advanced tip lol https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1017516634568654939/1022260721943314492/v12044gd0000cceb9p3c77u82otdl61g.mp4
04:55 PM Tom_L: pere, old retired farts can make it friday any day of the week!
04:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: high of only 60F here tomorrow
04:59 PM pere: Tom_L: sound great. :)
04:59 PM Tom_L: 64 here tomorrow
05:11 PM * JT-Cave puts his Python hat on for a bit
05:11 PM JT-Cave: 2 nice days in a row so we are going to play and have fun
05:11 PM Tom_L: is that like a halloween costume?
05:12 PM Tom_L: i've got a pile of branches left to dry out before i get rid of em
05:25 PM JT-Cave: I have enough branches to fill a dump truck
05:26 PM XXCoder: setup a bbq party?
05:26 PM XXCoder: burn all branches cooking steaks
05:26 PM JT-Cave: I'll burn them when it get much cooler outside
05:26 PM JT-Cave: I already have several piles of branches
05:28 PM Tom_L: i had a 6" dead one i had to rope down before it went thru the roof
05:28 PM Tom_L: i put it on the barbie already
05:34 PM JT[m]1: Wonderful the power went out
05:34 PM Tom_L: wind?
05:34 PM XXCoder: doh
05:35 PM Tom_L: and i was thinking a raindrop hit the sat
05:35 PM JT[m]1: Dead calm ATM
05:35 PM XXCoder: I look "forward" to brief blackout here. its basically tradition at fall, since first rains find new problems in power systems here
05:35 PM XXCoder: though never serious
05:35 PM Tom_L: JT[m]1, on your phone?
05:36 PM JT[m]1: Yes
05:36 PM Tom_L: what app do you use for irc?
05:37 PM JT[m]1: It wasriot
05:37 PM Tom_L: oh that's right. the [m]...
05:37 PM Tom_L: element?
05:38 PM JT[m]1: Yea
05:41 PM JT[m]1: My neighbor is calling the coop
05:42 PM Tom_L: my first thought was chicken coop...
05:42 PM Tom_L: and that didn't make sense
05:43 PM XXCoder: calling cops on chicken coop
05:43 PM JT[m]1: Ozark Border Electric Coop
05:43 PM XXCoder: wonder if thats touguetwister
05:45 PM JT[m]1: The chicken coop used to email me
05:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:59 PM JT-Cave: 1100 homes in Butler county and 300 in the neighboring Wayne county without power
05:59 PM * JT-Cave fired up the generator
05:59 PM Tom_L: just serviced mine for the upcoming winter
06:03 PM JT-Cave: mine is 2 cylinder diesel 3 phase generator
06:05 PM JT-Cave: looks like some thunder storms north of us might have created the outage
06:10 PM Tom_L: looks like a patch headed this way
06:14 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:16 PM JT-Shop: the generator has a Deutz diesel motor I think that's german
06:20 PM JT-Shop: https://ebill.ozarkborder.org/maps/OMSWebMap/
